Comments/Problems:

This is a bug report forwarded from user Andrzej Kosmala on the
debian-user-polish mailing list. He prefers to write in English so I'm
translating for him. It's been a while since I installed Debian, so some of my
descriptions may not match the actual English messages, as I'm simply
translating his Polish descriptions.
The thread started at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-polish/2009/10/msg00059.html

He tried to install lenny on a set of disks in the following configuration:

 md0: /dev/sda1 (RAID1, degraded)
 md1: /dev/hda7 /dev/hdc1 (RAID1)
 md2: /dev/sda2 /dev/hdc3 (RAID1)

Here is some more information about the disks:

\---

This is the configuration before starting the installer. The partioning program
showed all of them as expected.

The steps to reproduce the problem:
1) select Polish language
2) in the partitioning tool select /dev/md2
3) choose ext3 as the filesystem
4) choose format
5) mount as the root filesystem
6) go back to the main menu of the partitioning program

Now, the behaviour differs slightly depending on what the user wanted to do
next:

7a) select another partition -
a progress bar appears, immediately goes to 52%, and hangs forever

7b) select save changes and continue with the installation -
a progress bar appears, proceeds up to 52%, at which point it hangs forever

A piece of output from tty4 retyped by hand:

armel debian-installer build failure

2009-12-22 Thread Martin Michlmayr
armel fails to build like this:

E: Couldn't find package input-modules-2.6.30-2-ixp4xx-di
make[7]: *** [stamps/get_udebs-ixp4xx_netboot-stamp] Error 100

However, input-modules-2.6.30-2-ixp4xx-di exists in the archive. Does
anyone have an idea why this happens?

Well, debian-installer has been tried twice on armel with the same
failure, so I'm not sure it's the mirror... (but I don't know what
else it could be, which is why I mailed -boot).

Anyway, I just checked that input-modules-2.6.30-2-ixp4xx-di is listed
in
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/debian-installer/binary-armel/Packages.gz
right now. Riku, can you build it once more to see if it works now?

Unfortunately he already said that it's not possible for him to retry
the installation. But I will add this note to the thread which might
help the next person with a similar problem.

It builds fine here from my local mirror (after an apt-get source).

Hello,

I'm traveling however this wasn't suppose to be a problem however here

I'll be back at January 06 so if someone could help in the meanwhile
it would be awesome.

Bug#562122: netcfg: Improve preseeding of network device to use

2009-12-22 Thread Andrew Pollock
Package: netcfg
Version: 1.51
Severity: wishlist

I've just sat through many installs on ThinkPad T41, T43 vintage laptops, using
PXE, wired Ethernet, and a preseeded installation.

I've preseeded netcfg/choose_interface to auto, to try and avoid the
netcfg/choose_interface question being asked. What I suspect is the problem, is
the wireless interface is showing link so the question still gets asked.

My thoughts on how to extend this functionality was:

allow preseeding the interface to use based on:

1) vendor component of the MAC
2) PCI ID
3) some substring of the interface description

because preseeding the specific interface by name is a non-starter, due to the
way Linux can't consistently enumerate the interfaces.

There are only a few udebs left that still depend on libc6 rather than
libc6-udeb. In most cases the reason is simply that they have not been

 A binNMU should solve this.

I'm therefore requesting a binNMU for the following source packages, for
 all architectures.
 devio/1.2-1
 fribidi/0.10.9-1
 linux-ntfs/2.0.0-1
 mii-diag/2.11-2
 pcmciautils/014-4
 pwgen/2.06-1
 sparc-utils/1.9-4 (sparc only)
 mac-fdisk/0.1-15 (powerpc only)

All scheduled.

Adam

Package: network-console
Version: 0627 (backports)

I'm using the version from http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/ since I'm
installing on a new Dell R410 and it requires 2.6.29 or later.

It's a network preseed install and although I can ssh in and
/bin/network-console runs fine, if I select the option to Start
shell then the connection just terminates. Changing /etc/passwd to
run /bin/sh instead works fine. I can then run /bin/network-console,
select start-shell and I am returned to the prompt.

/var/log/syslog states:
sshd[9487]: Accepted password for installer from 10.0.0.1 port 36721 ssh2
sshd[9488]: lastlog_filetype: Couldn't stat /var/log/lastlog: No such
file or directory
sshd[9488]: lastlog_openseek: /var/log/lastlog is not a file or a
directory!

touch()ing the file stops those errors but it still fails to log me in
(even if I stop/start sshd)

Not sure what's going on - is network-console exiting rather than
exec()ing a shell?

Package: cdebconf
Severity: normal

cdebconf's dpkg-reconfigure currently only runs the config and postinst
scripts.

debconf's dpkg-reconfigure runs 3 scripts:

foreach my $info (['prerm','upgrade', $version],
  ['config', 'reconfigure', $version],
  ['postinst', 'configure',   $version]) {

The reason debconf runs the prerm is underdocumented[1], but probably is to
completly reproduce the actions that dpkg performs when configuring a package.
It's possible that a postinst script could rely on the prerm being run first.

For example, the prerm might stop a daemon that is started again in the
postinst script. While it would probably not fail if the daemon was already
running, the daemon might not notice configuration changes made by the
dpkg-reconfigure.

Package: rootskel

Severity: important

Currently reopen-console-linux has the following code:
# If the kernel emitted a handover message, then it's the one
console=$(dmesg -s 65535 |
sed -n -e 's/.*\] console handover: boot \[.*\] - real
\[\(.*\)\]$/\1/p')

While testing 2.6.32-rc5 on my Sun Ultra 10 (sparc), I noticed the following
change in the boot messages:
 Console: colour dummy device 80x25
-console handover: boot [earlyprom0] - real [tty0]
+console [tty0] enabled, bootconsole disabled

The reopen-console-linux script will need to be adapted to deal with that
change.

Consider a script that does something like:

ret=$(echo GET debconf/priority | debconf-communicate)

If cdebconf and the newt frontend are used, debconf-communicate outputs
escape sequences to clear the screen, so this won't work.

There are probably programs in debian that do this, for more or less
valid reasons, and switching to cdebconf will break them..

Perl dpkg-reconfigure runs the prerm upgrade and the postinst
configure, so as to simulate a page upgrade and cause the
reconfiguration to take effect. cdebconf is missing this.

Also, perl dpkg-reconfigure has a nasty hack to detect
prerm/postinst scripts using debconf, so as to avoid them
starting another copy of debconf (which would contend with
it writing to the DB). This might need to be brought over as well.

cdebconf's dpkg-reconfigure exits zero even if the config script exited
nonzero. confmodule_shutdown() seems to not set the right exit status in
this case.

(dpkg-reconfigure was always exiting 126, since it failed to call
confmodule_shutdown(), I fixed that, only to uncover this new bug which
I don't have time to track down ATM.)

Package: localechooser

We have the following code:

# The code below adds lang_COUNTRY at the beginning of the
# language list we got from language selection, unless it's
# already included.
if [ $LOCALE != C ]  \
   [ $LANGUAGE ] [ $COUNTRYCODE ] \
   [ $COUNTRYCODE != $DEFAULT_COUNTRY ]  \
   [ $LANGUAGELIST != $LANGUAGE ]  \
   ! echo :$LANGUAGELIST: | \
 grep -q :${LANGUAGE%%_*}_$COUNTRYCODE:; then
LANGUAGELIST=${LANGUAGE%%_*}_$COUNTRYCODE:$LANGUAGELIST
[...]
fi

IIUC, when a user selects German + Liechtenstein, this is supposed to
result in a LANGUAGELIST of de_LI:de.

But this does not actually happen because of the test
   [ $LANGUAGELIST != $LANGUAGE ]
which results in the comparison [ de != de ], so the whole test fails
and de_LI is not added.

If the above is correct and de_LI should be added, this is an old bug: the
Etch installer behaves the same and the code is even older.

I think that now that the last test has been added (is ll_CC already
included in the languagelist), the problematic test could probably just
be dropped.

Christian?

   * Prefer official language variants by adding the combination of selected
language and country to the front on the language list (closes: #560045).
If a preferred locale was selected, instead add the language and country
combination from that to the languagelist as it will most likely also
 indicate the preferred language variant.
   * Change the dialog title to match the main stages of localechooser:
selection of language, location and locale(s). An old flaw now finally
resolved, prompted by a discussion with Florian Zumbiehl in #559795.
