Bug#295597: emacs21: incorrect modifier key behaviour (ISO_Level3_Shift vs. Meta)

2005-02-17 Thread Jérôme Marant
Quoting Benjamin Herrenschmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  What exactly is ISO_Level3_Shift?

 I use it to obtain additional symbols, I map it to the left Alt key
 (which I don't map to Alt of course), that's how MacOS obtains the
 |,{,},etc... on intl keyboards (read: non-us).

 It sort-of is the new way to do it instead of switching groups with
 Mode_switch. A bunch of intl keymaps are supposed to use it nowadays, I
 suspect AltGr will be defined as that in the future.

Something related to xkb has changed in recent debian-patched Xfree releases
as well as in Xorg 6.8.1+ that made necessary to apply the patch I mentioned
to Emacs.

   That is, I can't obtain the symbols that are normally obtained with an
   ISO_Level3_Shift + key combo. Emacs interprets it apparently as
   Meta-key.

  When did this bug first show up? We applied a patch recently which
  was related to xkb map. It has not been applied to XEmacs yet.

 Ah, could be ! I think it didn't happen before my upgrade a few days
 ago, but then, I'm also just switching from xemacs to emacs so it's a
 bit difficult to say. I suppose I could be emacs myself without the
 patch to confirm that, but I would need some help I suppose, as I've
 never been close to trying to build that monster before :)

The patch was introduced in 21.3+1-8. Could you please grab 21.3+1-7
from snapshot.debian.net and tell us if it changes anything?
That said, I suspect you could have to change your settings for this
new compliance. Unfortunately, I have zero knowledge about xkb but the
originator of the said patch might help us.

Cheers,

slightly different (I reported the other bug as well), though if it

solved in one go.

Bug#291466: mailman: Insisting on deleting qfiles is a bug

2005-02-17 Thread Athanasius
Followup-For: Bug #291466
Package: mailman
Version: 2.1.5-5.backports.org.3

  mailman.preinst checks for any files under /var/lib/mailman/qfiles and
aborts installation if any are found. Debconf message then advises to
simply delete the qfiles if needs be. In many situations this is not a
valid option (loss of mail).

  An alternative that should be documented is to first backup and remove
the qfiles, perform the upgrade, then restore the backed up qfiles
whilst mailman is NOT running, and then run /usr/lib/mailman/bin/update
to ensure the qfiles are in latest format. After that mailman may
safely be restarted.

  This worked for me anyway (upgrading backports version, but the fact
it was a backport is irrelevant to this problem and suggested solution).

I was using stable with gtk1.2-dev, and I've upgraded my system to a

upgrade to gtk2.0.

Everything was fine, but I could not run programs which was linked to
GTK2.0. It said:

I fixed this with upgrading the X system too *MANUALY*. Namely the
xfree86 and xserver-xfree86 packages, if I remember well. These were NOT
in the dependency tree. I don't know which package needs it (gtk2.0 or
pango or atk or ?), but it's needed.

I'm using Debina/Linux with localy compiled kernel 2.4.27; 3.0r4;

Bug#295649: tk8.4: spinbox widget gets stuck in infinite repeat

2005-02-17 Thread Adam M. Costello
Package: tk8.4
Version: 8.4.9-1
Severity: normal

The bug is in /usr/lib/tk8.4/spinbox.tcl. It's possible for a spinbox
button to get effectively stuck down so that its action gets invoked
repeatedly until the application is killed.

The B1-Leave event is used to start a repeating chain of AutoScan
invocations, each of which schedules the next one, continuing until
some other event (like a ButtonRelease-1 or a B1-Enter) cancels the
next scheduled invocation, whose ID is stored in Priv(afterId). The
assumption is that a B1-Leave event means the user dragged from inside
the widget to outside widget, which means the user must be trying to
select a bunch of text, which ought to continue scrolling as long as the
button is held down outside the widget.

But some window managers can cause a B1-Leave event without any
dragging and without any corresponding button release. In my case,
olvwm allows me to select a window (to give it the focus) by clicking
on it while holding down the WMGrab modifier (which I have configured
to be Control, but I don't think that's relevant). As a side effect,
this causes a B1-Leave event (I don't know why), but no button
release. Therefore, a never-ending chain of AutoScan invocations is
launched, with no immediate possibility of a ButtonRelease-1 or
a B1-Enter because the button is not even down. This background
activity is invisible to the user because it has no effect on the
display.  However...

If the user then clicks on one of the spinbox buttons, the background
chain of AutoScan calls can collide with the chain of Invoke calls,
because both use Priv(afterId) to store the ID of the next scheduled
call. The button is supposed to trigger its -command action repeatedly
as long as it is held down, and the button release triggers the
cancelation of the next call. But because the ID is shared, the button
release can instead end up terminating the background chain of AutoScan
calls, leaving the chain of Invoke calls going forever.

To reproduce this effect, run olvwm (or olwm) and the following script:

#!/usr/bin/wish
proc foo {} { puts stderr DEBUG foo }
spinbox .foo -command foo
pack .foo

Click on the spinbox text area while holding down the WMGrab modifier
(which I think is Alt by default), then click on one of the buttons
once or twice. You should see an endless stream of DEBUG foo on
stderr. More clues can be gathered by adding debug statements in
/usr/lib/tk8.4/spinbox.tcl.

I think perhaps AutoScan needs to check whether a text selection is
actually in progress (initiated by a button press) rather than assume
that a B1-Leave implies that the button is currently down. It
would probably also be a good idea to use separate variables to store
AutoScan's after ID and Invoke's after ID.

There seems to be no problem with XEmacs which does not have your fix.

Bug#295654: gimp: pictures cropped with Image Magick aren't loaded properly in GIMP.

2005-02-17 Thread Eric Lavarde
Package: gimp
Version: 2.2.3-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm not sure it's a GIMP problem, it might be an ImageMagick problem,
but as GIMP seems to be the only program which has problems with images
generated by ImageMagick, I try it here first, feel free to reassign.

So, to the problem, when I crop an image with 'display', it appears with
an offset in GIMP (the layer is shifted relative to the image). I'd say
that the offset is the same as the cropped portion of the original
picture. It can go as far as that I get a warning from gimp saying that
the PNG file specifies an offset that caused the layer to be positioned
outside the image.
If I edit the image, e.g. in kpaint, the problem disappears in GIMP.

I attach an example of such an image.

Thanks, Eric

Bug#295563: dh_python depends on hardcoded name of the python-binary

2005-02-17 Thread Josselin Mouette
Le mercredi 16 fvrier 2005  18:58 +0100, Daniel Baumann a crit :
 If the python-binary is not 'python' but i.e. 'python2.3' instead,
 dh_python fails with Python is not installed, aborting. (Probably
 forgot to Build-Depend on python.).

 Please make it dynamically so one can use for example python2.3-dev as
 the only python-dependency in build-depends.

This is not possible. This is the only way we found to get the default
python version on the system.

Bug#295069: Verbose / debug options hard to find if present at all

 I tried finding out why apt-get source doesn't work for me (bug report
 on its way), but couldn't, even after looking at like 4 apt manpages
 (apt, apt-get, apt.conf, apt_preferences), find any option/flag to ask
 apt-get to be more verbose at what's going on.

 An exhaustive list of config options would be nice too in some manpage,
 so one can search through it and find the options one needs.

The manpage for apt.conf points to
/usr/share/doc/apt/examples/configure-index.gz which gives you a list
with all available configuration options. This includes the debug
options.

Cheers,
 Michael

2005-02-17 Thread W. Borgert
Package: ntp-server
Version: 1:4.2.0a+stable-2

It would be nice to set the ntp server in /etc/ntp.conf
using debconf. In universities, companies etc. people use
one or more internal NTP sources, not pool.ntp.org. Using
debconf would provide for a convenient way to set this
information, esp. as it's the only configuration most people
would have to do.

Hi LaMont,

I'm not sure where this bug is coming from, but version 5.42.1-1.2 has
successfully build from source on all architectures, continues to build
correctly in i386 pbuilder for me, and is the explicit result of an NMU that
*updated* the config.guess and config.sub files. Are you sure this bug
applies to the current version?

Bug#295657: EXT3 on RAID problems in all 2.6-smp

2005-02-17 Thread Jeroen van Disseldorp
Package: kernel-image-2.6.10-1-686-smp
Version: 2.6.10-4
Severity: critical

2 months ago I bought 4 new hard drives, which I configured as follows:

-
|  Linux  |  Swap  |  RAIDSET-1 disk 1  |
-
| RAIDSET-0 disk 1 |  RAIDSET-1 disk 2  |
-
| RAIDSET-0 disk 2 |  RAIDSET-1 disk 3  |
-
| RAIDSET-0 disk 3 |  RAIDSET-1 disk 4  |
-

RAIDSET-0 is 20G, RAIDSET-1 is 709G.

On top of both raid devices I use the device mapper to encrypt those
disks, so data travels to the disk through the following layers:

  vfs - ext3 - device mapper - raid - physical disks

Since the beginning I have been having problems with heavy disk usage
on RAIDSET-1. It seems that under normal circumstances the system is
stable, but under heavy load the following error occurs:

Feb 12 06:27:25 einstein kernel: EXT3-fs error (device dm-2): ext3_readdir: bad
entry in directory #84509561: rec_len %% 4 != 0 - offset=0, inode=1629516644,
rec_len=29795, name_len=117
Feb 12 06:27:25 einstein kernel: Aborting journal on device dm-2.
Feb 12 06:27:25 einstein kernel: ext3_abort called.
Feb 12 06:27:25 einstein kernel: EXT3-fs abort (device dm-2):
ext3_journal_start: Detected aborted journal
Feb 12 06:27:25 einstein kernel: Remounting filesystem read-only

As I do some spam-learning and backups at night, requiring some heavy
disk use, this happens just about every day. Running fsck after the
error is useless, as it finds no errors at all. So there is little
else to do then remount and hope for the best for another day.

My system is a dual Pentium II 400MHz with 384MB memory. All four
disks are Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 250G. The problem occurs with every
2.6 kernel I have tried so far, starting from 2.6.7.

Typical thing is that it only seems to occur on -smp kernels. I've
been running some UP-kernels as well and (although slower) they do
not thrash the ext3 journal. Could this be an SMP race?

More system information can be found in the attached kern.log.

Jeroen

 I think this is what you're looking for?

No, not really. I know I can find the problematic file this way. But I
would prefer to get an indication about this in the mail that cron
sends. If an inexperienced user gets a mail with a subject from some
crontab file and a body that only says grep: invalid regular
expression, he will problably not know at once what this means (and I
must say that I was not sure that it was an error in one of my logcheck
filter files until I saw the debug output).

What I suggest is that for each egrep over the filter files, you check
whether the return value is 2, and if yes send a message to stderr:

logcheck found an invalid regular expression in file $file

(ideally with the temporary directory mapped back to the original
location).

Bug#295661: kdevelop3: relaunching debugger fails after segfault of debugged c++-program

2005-02-17 Thread Christian Salzmann
Package: kdevelop3
Version: 4:3.1.1-2
Severity: important

I debug code (written in c++) using the built in debugger of kdevelop.
If my code segfaults (this can't be always avoided ;-) the debugger does not
work anymore. Relaunching of the program in debug mode haws no effect and I
have to restart kdevelop. This means restarting kdevelop several dozens of
times a day.

This becomes extremely nasty as kdevelop doen't honor most of the
personalizations I made. I.e. after the relaunch of kdevelop I have always to
adjust window sizes, delete unwanted views, toggle the standard marker from
bookmark to breakpoint, and so on.

Bug#294931: new upstream version 2.2.9 available

 Debian testing/unstable as well.
 Current stable version 2.1.6 is quite outdated and misses many features.

Hello Max,
I am well aware of the development version 2.2.9 and the new feature it
offers given I have contributed to a large number of them.

The precompiled version for Windows is based on the development version
because the stable will not build under cygwin.

However, I don't feel that 2.2.9 is suitable for Debian: this version
has several nasty bugs. For example:
? isprime(798125329,2)
%1 = 0
(should be 1 since 798125329 is prime).

Also, being a development snapshot, both the API and the ABI will change
in the next release, which does not make it suitable for use as a shared
library.

Given that, I am not keen to push that version to the next Debian stable
release (due soon), which will be the case if I upload it to unstable
now.

However, at some point, I might consider to package separatly the CVS
version as a snapshot.

Cheers,

Bug#295666: regex.7.gz: The [[::]] and [[::]] word boundary regexps are not supported

2005-02-17 Thread Vincent Fourmond
Package: manpages
Version: 2.01-1
Severity: minor
File: regex.7.gz

  Hello  !

  The regex.7.gz mentions that [[::]] and [[::]] are available to designate
word boundaries.
However, neither grep nor sed, which are build on the standard libc regcomp do
recognise this syntax.
Moreover, the small program here

#include regex.h
#include sys/types.h
#include iostream

using namespace std;

int main()
{
  regex_t RE;
  int err_code = regcomp(RE, [[::]],
 REG_EXTENDED);
  char Buffer[100];
  if(err_code) {
regerror(err_code, RE, Buffer, 100);
cerr  Error :   Buffer  endl;
  }
}

produces the following error message:

Error : Invalid character class name

My guess is that this feature is not implemented anymore, or has never been.
Then, two solutions:
either remove it from the documentation, or at least mention that it's not
supported anymore - either
put the feature back into libc ;-) !

  Thanks for considering this report

Vincent Fourmond

2005-02-17 Thread Frederic Gaus
Package: mozilla-thunderbird
Version: 1.0-3
Severity: normal

This error appears when I open the message-window of a RSS-Message in
News Blogs. I load the web page, not the article summary. When I open
the message-window and then close it immediately again, before the HTML-Body
of the RSS-Feed-Message is loaded, Thunderbird segfaults.

When I wait until the HTML is loaded, there is no problem.

 These bugs are the same, and it seems that indeed there was a mistake when
 making the package. I hope it can be fixed soon.

Security team, Joey,

It seems the most recent evolution security update had a regression
w.r.t. SSL support, not unlikely caused by missing build dep in woody or
such.

I think it would desireable to rectify this issue in an update.

Bug#295667: /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox: css focus problem with select forms

2005-02-17 Thread CAiRO
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0+dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox

FF fails to handle select forms correctly. See the bug example at
http://www.domains-und-mehr.de/dateien/test.html

For some select forms, you have to click twice to open them for the first time.
This is a really nasty bug because you never know if you have to click once
or twice this time!

I tried the configuration you showed but the authentication worked. On this
host, PAM goes through an external LDAP database, FWIW.

The only change in the package was that the default /etc/pam.d/httpd now looks
like this:

#%PAM-1.0
@include common-auth
@include common-account

whereas it formerly looked like this:

#%PAM-1.0
auth   required /lib/security/pam_unix.so
accountrequired /lib/security/pam_unix.so

Perhaps if you change it back it will work for you.

 afterwards (to clean allocated data in a substructure mostly), but that
 probably happens at a higher level, and I'm kind of lost in higher
 level functions.  :-/

   Thanks for trying swapping the free (I really can't build glibc on my
 laptop)!

If you want to do this kind of stuff, I suggest you add a pre-up command

iface eth0 inet dhcp

Bug#295673: mozilla-firefox: Content frame jumps up and down by one pixel if you make the FF window small enough

2005-02-17 Thread CAiRO
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0+dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

If you make the FF window small enough, the content frame will start to
continiously jump up and down by one pixel. You can see a small line (1 px
height) appear between the top of the status bar and the bottom of the
horizontal scrollbar of the content frame and it continously blinks! (appears
and disappears, maybe 10 times a sec).
This happens for lots of sites if you make the FF window small enough, eg. see
http://www.plone.org and reduce the size of the FF window to about 400x400
pixel.

Bug#295671: mozilla-firefox: tableless design will mess up if you make the FF window too small

2005-02-17 Thread CAiRO
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0+dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

If you make the FF window smaller beyond a certain point, the layout of
tableless sites
will be destroyed. For an example, see http://www.plone.org and redurce the FF
window width
to =640 and the header row will be a mess. This happens more or less with all
sites that are
based on tableless layout if you make the FF window small enough. Though, it
shouldn't do that
but instead show horizontal scrollbars that are wide enough to scroll the whole
site.

Bug#149425: should compress data before sending

2005-02-17 Thread Erik Schanze
Hi @all!

How about this bug?
Was there any work done on it?
It's open for more than 2 years now and seems not really hard to fix.

Bill Allombert [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 This is not a bug in the package but on the popcon server side,
 that we cannot fix. We are in the process of reorganizing popcon
 to be able to improve the server side.

What about this process of reorganizing and the status of the needed
possibility of compressed reports?

My report is about 73k per machine and I own only a low bandwitdh modem
connection, so a comression would be great.

Kindly regards,
Erik

Bug#294696: Excessively strict dependancy for libjpeg62-dev

   The libjpeg62-dev package currently Depends on 'libc6-dev'. In most cases
   (including, as far as I can tell, this one), this is an excessively strict
   Dependancy; the value 'libc6-dev | libc-dev' should suffice (note that you
   can't simply do 'libc-dev', due to limitations of the packaging system,
   currently).

  Hello Joel,

  libc6-dev is the only package that provide libc-dev, so it is not
  strict, let alone excessively strict. I suspect you are referring to
  non-glibc ports. In that case, 'libc6-dev | libc-dev' is not correct
  because on a non glibc port, libc6-dev will not exist and libc-dev
  might be a purely virtual dependency.

  I propose you restate the problem you really have, and we try to address
  it correctly.

So to summary: several plateform does not have a libc6-dev package, but
have a libc*-dev that Provides libc6-dev. You would prefer if it was
only necessary to Provides libc-dev instead, which make a lot of sense.

However, I don't see what 'libc6-dev | libc-dev' achieve over
'libc-dev': on ia64 and alpha (which are autobuild), 'libc6-dev' is a
purely virtual dependency, and so is 'libc6-dev | libc-dev' and
'libc-dev'.

So why not change the dependency to libc-dev ?

 libc12-dev properly Provides: libc-dev. Please look at the virtual package
 list declaration for what libc-dev implies; that 'standard C library
 headers' are present.

Except there is no libc12-dev on packages.debian.org.

 Among other things, even on glibc-based systems, it isn't only libc6-dev;
 it's also libc6.1-dev, libc0.2-dev, and libc1-dev. Most of those ports have
 ugly hacks such as Provides: libc6-dev to work around packages that don't
 properly declare what their build dependancies are, which is why bugs like
 this one have gone so long.

Please note it is not here listed as a build dependency, but as as
dependency of libjpeg6b-dev. libc6-dev is build-essential so is never
installed due to Build-Depends, but through the build-essential package.
This dependency is for the benefit of people that want to build
software linked to libjpeg.

 The only reason the correct answer isn't just 'libc-dev' is due to package
 tools not being able to cope with not having at least one real alternative;
 it is a broken situation in APT/dpkg, with the workaround of 'always
 specify at least one real package that satifies the dependancy'.

I well know that, but 'libc6-dev | libc-dev' does not achieve that on
alpha and ia64. If we really want to achieve that, the simplest way is
to have Depends: field that depends on the architecture and list the
real

 Adding a Provides: libc6-dev to libc12-dev (as the other ports do if they
 have a different glibc version) would, for obvious reasons, not be a
 correct solution either, because then there is no way at all to say No, I
 mean it, this really needs GNU libc development files.

That is a different problem: on what libc*-dev a -dev package should
depends ? Obviously one that allows to build programs using the library,
so probably the same as used for building the library.

Also using the number 6 to mean 'GNU libc' and the number
12 'BSD libc' is not specially descriptive.

This will cause a lot of trouble for you.. With the next gnome-vfs2 upload
nautilus will mount based on mountpoints again (because that's more sane and
pmount supports it now).. So with your setup you'll always have one of your two
devices mounted, no matter which icon you choose.

Anyway doing things this way is plain silly (no offence) and is almost
impossible to fix (we would need some crazy heuristic to guess how to mount
something)..

Could you try with a fresh account without dot files and _not_ run

KDE now uses menu-xdg for menu but maybe you have remaining entries from

Probably this bug should be reassigned to kicker.

Those should read openoffice.orgs package description :)

 It would be better if a dictionary was recommended to

OpenOffice.org already suggests myspell-dictionary and the various langpacks

It is even mentioned in the package description :)

Hmm. libaspell15 recommends aspell-en | aspell-dictionary. Hmm.
Ok, I guess we could add a Recommends: to libmyspell3...

But that won't help for people getting their dictionary for their specific

Bug#295677: mozilla-firefox: symbolic links are expanded in the Change Action dialog

2005-02-17 Thread Anders Boström
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0+dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

When selecting a program in the Change Action dialog
(Preferences-Downloads-File Types-Change Action...-Open them in
this application:-Change...) is symbolic links translated to the
real file. This is very bad as wrappers might have different behavior
depending on the name of the symbolic link. In my case can't I use
32-bit apps from a chroot under amd64 as helpers due to this problem.

You always have to format your / partition, but there is absolutely no
requirement to change partition layout.

 Also what is with the little gremlin icon which appears next to swap
 in the partition menu?

Documented on the help page available in partman.

 I chose grub and it didn't complain or give any error messages but on
 reboot it turned out it had chosen the first partition (ie swap) as
 the root. This is a problem.

 Now we get to the post first boot setup
 The cdrom is on hdd. Although the installer (and later
 gnome-auto-cd-mounter-thing) both found it, apt could not. It turns
 out that I don't have swap either.
 The reason for this seems to be that fstab was not populated and
 contains: # UNCONFIGURED FSTAB FOR BASE SYSTEM

That is probably caused by the fact that you did not finish partitioning
properly. If you decide not to use essential parts of the system, you
should be prepared to deal with breakage.

I proposed a solution, but the other popcon maintainer disagreed, so
I did not it implement it.

 What about this process of reorganizing and the status of the needed
 possibility of compressed reports?

A lot of work have been done. Now we have the popcon.debian.org website
and virtual host.

 My report is about 73k per machine and I own only a low bandwitdh modem
 connection, so a comression would be great.

Given compressed data will need to be base64'ed, compression will not
get you much:

However the current popcon server (gluck.debian.org, aka

Bug#295681: tramp: TRAMP uses user's umask for temporary files?

2005-02-17 Thread Kjetil Kjernsmo
Package: tramp
Version: 1:2.0.47-1
Severity: normal
Tags: security

I just noticed that when I edited a buffer /su::/etc/apache/axkit.conf
and file /tmp/#axkit.conf# was created. axkit.conf is owned by root:root
on my system, and is readable only to root:
-rw---1 root   root4901 Feb 17 12:39 axkit.conf
I don't want the contents of that file exposed... :-)

The problem is that the temporary file gets a different set of
permissions:
-rw-r--r--  1 kjetil   kjetil4900 Feb 17 13:00 #axkit.conf#
It gets the default permissions of my user.

This seems to have security implications to me. The contents of this
file is now easily accessible to any local user.

I guess it would be OK to make the file read and writeable only to the
local user by default. This user has allready legitimately accessed the
file, so that should be OK.

I'm submitting this only as severity normal, as I'm not confident it is
a bug, it could be that I have a flawed understanding. If it is a bug it
would be the first time I find a security problem! :-) What do others
think?

Bug#295680: libc6: getgrname returns a result that doesn't belong to /etc/group

2005-02-17 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: libc6
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-20
Severity: important

The getgrname(3) man page says:

  The getgrnam() function returns a pointer to a structure containing the
  group information from /etc/group for the entry that matches the group
  name name.

But here, the getgrname function returns a result that doesn't belong
to /etc/group, which seems to lead by side effects to a security hole
(more details below).

Consider the following program:

#include stdio.h
#include stdlib.h
#include grp.h

int main (int argc, char **argv)
{
  struct group *grp;

  if (argc != 2)
{
  fprintf (stderr, Usage: grname group_name\n);
  exit (1);
}

  grp = getgrnam (argv[1]);
  if (grp == NULL)
{
  fprintf (stderr, grname: can't find group %s\n, argv[1]);
  exit (2);
}

  printf (%d (%s)\n, grp-gr_gid, grp-gr_name);

  return 0;
}

It gives here, where slocate is group 21 in NIS:

$ ./grname slocate
21 (slocate)
$ grep slocate /etc/group
zsh: exit 1 grep slocate /etc/group
$ grep 21 /etc/group
fax:x:21:

As a consequence:

# touch blah
# chown root.slocate blah
# ls -l blah
-rw-r--r--  1 root fax 0 2005-02-17 13:30:13 blah
   ^^^

This could also explain why groupadd (to add a group to /etc/group)
fails if a group with the same name exists via NIS.

Hi all,

Status update: Real life cought me, so the few hours mentioned earlier
did, as you've probably noticed, turn into days and weeks :-(

My packaging of 1.3.x hasn't progressed far from the stuff at
http://debian.jones.dk/auryn/pool-all/official/moin/

For those of you offering to help, I still could use concrete work on
non-CGI configuration and building the java module from source. Yes, I
know that alot is documented in the wiki system pages - what I need is
help coding this as packaging scripts, obeying Debian Policy and
possibly using debconf.

 Could you try with a fresh account without dot files and _not_ run

 KDE now uses menu-xdg for menu but maybe you have remaining entries
 from the pre menu-xdg era.

Yes I had. I removed everything in .kde/share/applink, and restarted KDE

Bug#128171: autofs: bind mounts make shortcuts impossible

2005-02-17 Thread Marc Lehmann
Package: autofs
Version: 4.1.3-8
Followup-For: Bug #128171

I think this wishlist item should actually be a bug.

I have to apply the attached patch ever since I use kernels with bind
mounts. The problem is that, for compatibility reasons, some of my
symlinks point to other automounted directories, e.g.:

wd  :...
exg :/fs/wd/exg/

And it's not easy nor always possible to rewrite the link to point to
the file system directly (some NFS servers have problems with submounts,
although, in theory, this would be solvable on the client side. It also
doesn't work with local mounts, as it's not possible to point inside a
non-mounted filesystem except by using symlinks).

It's certainly a bug because it happens to work *sometimes* (i.e. when the
other automounted directory was already mounted) and basically depends on
which entry gets accessed first.

I *did* talk to the upstream maintainer shortly after this was introduced,
and was told that he will not make this an option (but so far, no
technical reason why bind mounts are better are known to me, so I guess
switching to symlinks is safe, as it's done per default on kernels not
supporting bind mounts).

However, because the upstream sources won't change, I guess it stays
broken :)

(but at least the problems and the workaround is documented in debians bts)

An alternative, btw., would be to make bind mounts that point into
automounted directories work, but I guess this is a basic limitation
within autofs (no recursive mounts).

Bug#233308: Esperanto translations?

2005-02-17 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Edmund GRIMLEY EVANS ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
  While I'm at it, something VERY important that slept out in this
  discussion : the list of supported languages for sarge is
  *closed*. For size constraints, and for being sure that we don't
  induce problems with initrd size for D-I RC2 and now RC3, Joey Hess
  has requested that we stop adding languages to sarge-targeted D-I.

 It would still be nice to have the Esperanto locale in sarge, if that
 can be arranged.

Sure.

gotom and locales/glibc maintainers, any status about this old bug ?

Is it delayed post-sarge, ignored (if so, it should be tagged
wontfix, imho) or possible to be included in sarge?

There's a chance that a translation begins for Esperanto in Debian
Installer and we at least to have some visibility about the locale
name.

I personnally tend to favour eo_XX. Edmind has suggested eo_AQ
(Antarctica), based on the special status of this territory as part of
mankind's patrimonium. Others (in -esperanto) have suggested eo_EU
which I don't think is appropriate for a universal language...

Bug#294549: kontact: News sources doesn't show in summary

2005-02-17 Thread Matteo Calorio
Hello and sorry for the time it took to me to reply...

ZR I have the same problem, altough I would like to note, that it works
ZR occasionally for me. That is sometimes nothing is there, then when I
ZR return to the summary some feeds appear.

I solved my problem installing dcoprss package (and so also librss1
package) and manually copying libkontact_newstickerplugin.la and
libkontact_newstickerplugin.so into /usr/lib/kde3/. So, at the end, for me
was a problem of missing dependencies. Thanks anyway for your email!

Hope this helps,

Bug#293700: delayed NMU

Hi

Yeah, I completely forgot.
I assume this patch doesn't change anything else, so I think it's ok.
Could you send it to me so I can do a normal upload and fix bug #295188
while I'm at it? Or you can do a non-delayed NMU and then I'll upload a
-5 version right after that, whatever you think is easier.

BTW and completely OT, since you showed interest in PearPC, do you have
any idea how to fix bug #277996? I've been giving it some thought but
didn't come to any silver bullet.

I didn't cut-and-paste that, I'm afraid, so I must have said `exim4'.
Exim 3 was never installed on this machine.

 What does exim -d -bt iwj say? On my reference box, iwj gets qualified

I have now deinstalled exim and replaced it with smail, so I'm afraid
I can't say.

 Well, Tony is not known for his high opinion about the Debian exim 4
 packages. I have, however, not received a single word of constructive
 criticism from him ever, and I doubt that he ever took a closer look
 at Debian policy or at the Debian exim4 packages.

Are you going to claim that I'm ignorant of Debian policy or of mail
configuration ? I _am_ currently largely ignorant of the Debian exim4
packages, but what I've seen does not impress me.

 Rest assured that the current debconf configuration scheme has been
 pretty extensively thought out, and we offer numerous ways to turn all
 the magic off and replace the magic with a more old-fashioned
 approach. We are, however, open to constructive criticism.

I think throwing it away would be constructive.

 I am happily awaiting your patches. If you're just going to curse
 about our work without having suggestions how to do things better,
 kindly jump into the next lake.

I would be happy to update the old smailconfig script to make it
generate exim configs (and use debconf for its questions) if I thought
that my patch to throw away the template system would be accepted.

Ian.

Bug#295687: base-config: late_command run with TMPDIR not world-writable

2005-02-17 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: base-config
Version: 2.53.5
Severity: normal

I'm building a custom Debian distribution based on the Debian installer.
I have preseeded a number of debconf settings amongst which
base-config/late_command is set to install some additional packages. It is
set to this value:

mount /cdrom; dpkg --set-selections  /cdrom/get-selections.txt; apt-get -y
dselect-upgrade; eject /cdrom

One of the packages installed is clamav-daemon. When its postinst script runs
it tries to start the daemon (standard debhelper code), which fails like this:

Starting ClamAV daemon: LibClamAV Error: cli_cvdload(): Can't create temporary
directory /tmp/base-config.1141/clamav-c72
[...]
invoke-rc.d: initscript clamav-daemon action start failed.

Although clamav fails to tell why it can't create that directory, I'm pretty
sure it is because /tmp/base-config.1141 has mode 0755, not 1777 like /tmp
normally has. ClamAV runs as its own user, so it can't access the TMPDIR,
where it tries to create its temporary directory.

In any case, changing the value of base-config/late_command to

TMPDIR=/tmp; export TMPDIR; mount /cdrom; dpkg --set-selections
/cdrom/get-selections.txt; apt-get -y dselect-upgrade; eject /cdrom

makes the problem go away.

Please make sure that TMPDIR has the correct permissions at all times.

Bug#294180: Interface renaming

 OK, I change my statement to udev makes ifrename unnecessary in many

 I agree with you that ifrename should be supported. It should certainly
 be supported when hotplug is installed and udev is not. I would like to
 see it supported when both hotplug and udev are installed but the udev
 maintainer may not want that.

I've followed the discussion and I understand the current situation is
problematic, mainly because there are so many ways to detect and bring
up network interfaces. Although I understand why both #294180 and
#29 have been (re)assigned to ifrename, there is not much I can do
about it (call me a zombie if you want). The ifrename package does not
contain an init script (I don't think anyone knows which priority it
should have) nor hook scripts for any other package.

Rather than reassigning bugs again, I have created a Wiki page where we
can discuss this problem in a more constructive way (hopefully):

http://wiki.debian.net/?InterfaceRenaming

Please add your comments there.

Bug#295691: ctrlproxy: Please add support for more IRC clients (e.g. ksirc)

2005-02-17 Thread Hugo Haas
Package: ctrlproxy
Version: 2.6.1-1
Severity: wishlist

ksirc, konversation, mIRC (at least) cannot connect to the current
version of ctrlproxy (2.6.1-1).

This seems to have been fixed in the Subversion tree of the stable
version:

  Ctrlproxy 2.6.2:
   * Don't crash when linestack_send() gets NULL as linestack
   * Support mIRC and ksirc
   * Support halfops

Would it be possible to have either this version packaged or the patch
applied?

Thank you.

Regards,

Hugo

Bug#293700: delayed NMU

 Yeah, I completely forgot.
 I assume this patch doesn't change anything else, so I think it's ok.
 Could you send it to me so I can do a normal upload and fix bug #295188
 while I'm at it? Or you can do a non-delayed NMU and then I'll upload a
 -5 version right after that, whatever you think is easier.

The patch is the same I sent before, but updated to apply to the latest
version. I just uploaded it to ftp-master, you'll be able to fetch the
package from incoming in a few minutes.

 BTW and completely OT, since you showed interest in PearPC, do you have
 any idea how to fix bug #277996? I've been giving it some thought but
 didn't come to any silver bullet.

Why don't you put them in /usr/share/pearpc?

As for searching for the scripts directory, my suggestion is to look for them
in /usr/share/pearpc before trying ./scripts. You could even use an
environmental variable to override this.
