Bug#317333: reloading mousedev works
I've discovered that reloading mousedev works (rmmod mousedev; modprobe mousedev) and the device is correctly created. I have mousedev in /etc/modules. It seems that when the module gets loaded during boot udev fails to notice the device and doesn't create it, but does after the machine has booted. I don't have anything else that creates a device node in /etc/modules, so I don't know if it is just mousedev or anything in /etc/modules. -- David Pashley [EMAIL PROTECTED] Nihil curo de ista tua stulta superstitione. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#317430: ITP: apt-history -- logs the changes when installing
On Jul 09, 2005 at 01:14, Nico Golde praised the llamas by saying: Ok, now I had a look on the log file. I think apt-history is different. If you want you can see the same info but the log is a typical logfile. You have to use grep and other coreutils to get for example the new version of a package and the displayed version of the package before because the infos aren't listed in context in the logfile. It is easier than building the information apt-history gives out of the logfile. Bug#305101: Bug #305101: fortunes-ga does not use install directory
tags 305101 wontfix thanks Thank you for your bug report; apologies for the delay in replying. I do not believe this is a bug. The Irish fortunes are deliberately installed in a subdirectory of /usr/share/fortunes, as are (all? of) the the other non-English fortunes. This works so that in the default locales only English-language fortunes are given; to show Irish fortunes, set your locale to Irish, eg. $ LANG=ga fortunes I believe this is working as designed; if you disagree, please explain further. Bug#317499: ssh fingerprint returned by sshd is incorrect(?)
Package: ssh Version: 1:3.8.1p1-8.sarge.4 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** I recently reinstalled a machine that was running woody with sarge, from an official netinst cd. When I tried to connect to this machine - from a woody box, - after I had restored the ssh keys from backup I get complaints about the fingerprint being incorrect. When I run ssh-keygen -l -f keyfile, on either the new sarge box, or the woody box I am trying to connect from, I get the same fingerprint. This is *different* to what the woody ssh client says is being sent by the sshd on the sarge box (I'm not sure if they are meant to be the same). I consider this a bug because exposing users to mismatched key messages all the time lowers security - they will start to ignore such messages. What I want to be able to do is restore the existing host keys so that users will not get complaints about mismatched keys. I could work around by sedding out the wrong key from all users' known_hosts, but I don't think that is a good solution... Can you help? Can I? What other information do you need? I did attempt running with ssh -vvv to take an initial look. When I startup my laptop with kdm enabled the kdm is somwhat of broken. Not completely but I cannot switch to console or if I login the X is extremely slow. Then I have two ways to solve it: 1. I stop kdm by using the menu to get to console. This let me login in the console but the username I type is hidden. (Of cause killing the kdm from remote helps too.) 2. Not start the kdm at startup. If I start kdm after startup by hand everythink works well. The problem only happen on startup. I never use any suspend so I cannot say if there is the same problem. For now I just switch to xdm which works fine also on startup. Strange is that the kdm worked long time. I encounted the problem the first time about a half year ago or so. Bug#311120: Behavior depends on locale
I'm trying to import a file that is comma seperated. The problem is that gnumeric splits the data over columns from the spaces without asking me. I therefore cannot use the Tekst to Coloumn to seperate on commas. Example: Gnumeric,Excel Open Source,Closed will put in A1: Gnumeric,Excel and in A2: Open and in B2: Source,Close When run in locale nb_NO.UTF-8, gnumeric behaves in this way. When run in locale en_US.UTF-8, gnumeric behaves in the way reporter expects. This is because in Norwegian, 'comma' is a decimal separator. The following example gives the desired result in Norwegian locale. Gnumeric;Excel Open Source;Closed Gnumeric also has text import (configurable), where all parameters regarding text file import can be controlled from a dialog. Jon Kåre
Bug#317479: XFS problem
retitle 317479 hibernate does not play well with XFS /boot thanks also sprach Cameron Patrick [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2005.07.09.0550 +0200]: title WARNING: Linux 2.6.12-wing is suspended via Software Suspend! Does getting rid of the trailing quote on the second title line help? Oh, that issue. No, it does not fix it, but it's a separate bug. No, this time round it's really weird. If I suspend, the grub prompt is shown. If I reboot normally, the menu is shown. I once rebooted shortly after the kernel started loading after seeing the prompt and then got the menu. Thus I think something must be happening at the early stages of initialisation which makes grub work on subsequent reboots. Here's another peculiarity: In the grub prompt, I can cat /grub/menu.lst.working (that's a backup copy), but when I do cat /grub/menu.lst I get: Error 2: Bad file or directory type This error is returned if a file requested is not a regular file, but something like a symbolic link, directory, or FIFO. But I cannot determine what the problem is. Booting off a CD and mounting the /boot filesystem shows a normal file. And now I found something even more interesting. This is probably the same as #246111 and all the merged blocks. My /boot is an XFS filesystem, and menu.lst does not get committed in time. If I repair a filesystem dump: wing:/tmp# xfs_repair -L part1 [...] imap claims in-use inode 136 is free, correcting imap [...] entry menu.lst at block 0 offset 1608 in directory inode 132 references free inode 156 clearing inode number in entry at offset 1608... I suspect that the rational course here is to assume that the documentation is in error and so update the manpage and usage message (rather than modify the tool to implement a verbose mode). - Raz -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-2-386 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages irda-utils depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.30.13Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-21 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libglib1.2 1.2.10-9 The GLib library of C routines ii makedev 2.3.1-77 creates device files in /dev ii module-init-tools 3.2-pre1-2 tools for managing Linux kernel mo -- debconf information: * irda-utils/discovery: true * irda-utils/ttydev: /dev/ttyS1 irda-utils/firopt: irda-utils/setserial: * irda-utils/selectdevice: serial * irda-utils/dongle: none irda-utils/firdev: * irda-utils/enable: true -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#317512: please do not purge ./debian/ prematurely during clean
Package: kernel-package Version: 8.135 Severity: important kernel-package seems to purge ./debian/ before unapplying patches during the clean process. This raises a problem with complex patches. For instance, the suspend2 patch stores some information in debian/APPLIED_suspend2 which it needs to unapply itself. Since kernel-package purges all of ./debian/ prematurely, kernel-patch-suspend2 fails to unapply during the clean process. In addition, patches may actually modify ./debian, so they will fail to unapply when the files underneath are not there anymore. Please delay purging of ./debian until after patches have been unapplied. Since ./debian is created before patches are applied, this is the logical stack-way to do it. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (600, 'testing'), (98, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-cirrus Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages kernel-package depends on: ii dpkg 1.10.28Package maintenance system for Deb ii dpkg-dev 1.10.28Package building tools for Debian ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:3.3.5-3 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.3 [c-compiler] 1:3.3.5-13 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.4 [c-compiler] 3.4.3-13 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.0 [c-compiler] 4.0.0-9The GNU C compiler ii make 3.80-9 The GNU version of the make util ii perl 5.8.4-8Larry Wall's Practical Extraction -- no debconf information -- .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' :proud Debian developer and author: http://debiansystem.info `. `'` `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing a system Invalid/expired PGP subkeys? Package: libsql-statement-perl Version: 1.11-1 Severity: normal I depend upon libsql-statement-perl to manage small plain text databases of approx 2000 rows. Performance was fine in the version of libsql-statement-perl which came with woody but the newer version in sarge is very, very much slower. Package: dash Version: 0.5.2-5 Severity: minor Hi, dash does not handle NUL characters in scripts gracefully. To reproduce this, create the following script: echo 'foo^@' echo 'bar^@' echo 'baz^@' The characters depicted here as ^@ should be single NUL characters. When run in dash, this script generates the following output: foo bar t.sh: 5: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string (Please note that the third line is referred to as line 5, and the error message is also somewhat confusing.) Yes, the reason is that kaffe provides 3 different systems (jthreads, pthreads and pthreads-profile (i386 only currently)) which can be installed together and be switched by the alternative system via /etc/alternatives/kaffe-system. I see your point and you are right that there are 5 link dereferences involved to get the real command. Current situation is: /usr/bin/jar - /etc/alternatives/jar /etc/alternatives/jar - /usr/lib/kaffe/bin/jar /usr/lib/kaffe/bin/jar - /usr/lib/kaffe/.system/bin/jar where /usr/lib/kaffe/.system - /etc/alternatives/kaffe-system /etc/alternatives/kaffe-system - /usr/lib/kaffe/{jthreads,pthreads} This is just an idea and I don't know if this is allowed: /usr/bin/jar - /etc/alternatives/jar /etc/alternatives/jar - /etc/alternatives/kaffe-system/bin/jar /etc/alternatives/kaffe-system - /usr/lib/kaffe/{jthreads,pthreads} This would only need 3 dereferences. Use HTTP to submit reports? -- I like http just fine for reading /., but I am unsure what this means in this context. Bug#242884: another approach

However I would emit an error message if the final file (i.e. after redirections) to download is text/html (or better check with file(1) or examine the first N bytes). i think the content-type should be ok, i can add an additional check to the patch if you wnat to use it, (needs cleanups anyway) I like this approach, but IMO it is not uscan's work to workaround broken mirror schemes and/or watch files. This can be also considered as a separate wishlist bug for uscan, feel free to re-file it as such :) i fully agree that it *should* not be uscan's work, but those (sf.net) mirrors are used very often, and a re deliberately broken, so it's unlikely that they will get fixed. having uscan take care of the workaround is better than having everyone do so int their watchfiles in a fragile way, or relying on external php+rewrite+someweb_server tricks. the patch should be cleaned up and improved though, which i will gladly do if this is wanted. cu robert -- Robert Lemmen http://www.semistable.com signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#276419: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#276419: su appends the positional args to the command line
I think it is better to revert the patch, and just document the fact that -c is always provided to the invoked shell Return to broken state and explicitly document that Debian has broken su? Please, don't do this! Well, we need some decision here and here I come with my DD hat. I have followed the work on this bug and, first of all, I want to thank you guys for the involved time and the neurones your burned on that case...:-) Now for the decision : it seems that the change, even if justified by technical reasons, is very likely to break other packages and maybe as well some system administrators scripts, badly written or not. We cannot afford this. Debian has a longstanding reputation of stability (YES, even unstable) and reliability. Breaking things without warning is *not* the Debian Way and this is exactly what we did with this change (of course, non intentionnally). So, we have to leave time to our fellow maintainers to fix their scripts/packages/work/whatever. We also have to find the better way to do so. I have some ideas but others may pop up in the future. So, first of all, we REVERT THE PATCH. Don't take it badly, Alex, nothing pro or against you but this is, I think, the less worse decision. The bug will be reopened, as a reminder, even if we fix su. Then we communicate with other Debian developers so that scripts which assume the incorrect behaviour are fixed. If this involves a transition (ie fixes cannot be made unless we change su), we organise it. Being the origin of the needed changes, this is our duty. To achieve this, we need a document which explains the behaviour changes. This document MUST be as simple as possible and clearly explain the issues, even for people who are not very aware of su internals. All this (managing the change) will be made AFTER we merge with upstream. We will make an urgent upload with reveted su behaviour and Nicolas documentation in the man page. This change will also include the FTBFS fix for kFreeBSD and Hurd. I will work on it at Debconf if I can't sleep..:-)
