Bug#329008: Every once-in a while an upgrade involving perl uninstalls perl-doc

2005-09-18 Thread Baldvin Kovacs
Package: perl
Version: 5.8.7-4
Severity: normal

Every once in a while an upgrade of perl unistalls perl-doc. This
really annoys me. From my point of view I'd either package them
onto one package, or completely disconnect them, or I don't care,
but this is very annoying.

1. I don't know why every packager requires the very bleeding edge
of things for his package instead of real dependencies. With this
custom, there is no point to use a package manager that knows about
   versions.

2. But because this is done in all debian packages with no reason,
if one installs a package that depends on perl in sid, it will
most probably, almost surely upgrade perl.

3. And remove perl-doc.

4. And I get crazy.

Bug#329009: can rubber handle auxiliary tex files like it does for eps ?

2005-09-18 Thread Nicolas Boulenguez
Package: rubber
Version: 1.0-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello.

Is-it possible to add a module that does the same than the graphics
module for auxilliary tex file ?

For example, I use

$ gnuplot figure.gp  figure.tex

and then in the main tex file

\input{figure}

Here figure.gp uses the latex terminal of gnuplot, so that I can
include latex formulas in the figure. I could not do that easyly with
the eps terminal.

It would be nice if figure.tex could be updated by rubber, in the same
way than it automatically handles :

$ convert figure.jpg figure.eps
\includegraphics{figure}

Bug#323889: gedit: fails to display print previews

2005-09-18 Thread Masaki Oita

Hi,

Could you please try running gedit from a terminal and check whether it
  outputs any warning?

When I input the first character into gedit, either an alphabet or a Japanese
character, gedit produces the following warning:

(gedit:x): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to
pango_layout_set_text()

But it does not output any warning for inputting the subsequent characters.

And when the print preview is activated, gedit outputs:

(gedit:x): GnomePrintCupsPlugin-WARNING **: iconv does not support ppd
character encoding: ISOLatin1, trying CSISOLatin1

Do other apps behave similarly? For example does the Epiphany web
  browser permit printing?

The other gnome apps work fine, as for print preview.

Maybe you miss some fonts packages?

I have installed many fonts, and I'm just using Sans/Monospace for print
preview.

Thanks,

Masaki Oita [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

When I tried to see a print preview of any document, gedit just

This seemed to begin just after I installed the current version of
gedit (before that, I couldn't install because of dependency
problems). With the older version, I didn't come to such a problem.

Bug#327762: yaird: includes (unnecessary?) psmouse module in generated image.

2005-09-18 Thread Erik van Konijnenburg
On Sun, Sep 11, 2005 at 09:16:42PM -0300, Diego Essaya wrote:
I may be wrong, but I think that the 'psmouse' module is unnecessary.
 In fact, I don't have a PS/2 mouse (I have a USB one).

The 'evdev' and 'mousedev' modules may be unnecessary as well...

In the meantime 0.0.11 is published, which makes it easier
to play with what modules are used. Look at /usr/lib/yaird/conf/Default.cfg,
but beware that this is not yet marked as a configuration file,
so any changes made there will be overwritten by a new release.
You can specify an alternative config file on the command line.

The cause: yaird looks for keyboard devices in /proc/bus/input/devices,
finds /sys/class/input/event0, with a link to the underlying hardware:
/sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1. Then we load required modules for
the hardware. Platform? Nothing special. i8042? Just the i8042 module.
Serio1? Hmmm, could be a psmouse, could be atkbd; lets load both.
This is ugly: the fact that serio does not have the nicely coordinated
vendor/product codes you find in USB or PCI devices makes it difficult
to do good detection.

Could we use 'driver' link in .../serio1 to find the appropriate
device driver? Only if (a) the driver has same name in running and new kernel,
and (b) driver is modular in running kernel. Not reliable enough.

Note that older kernels ( 2.6.10?) don't have the device link in
/sys/class/input/event0, in which case some fallback logic in yaird
becomes active: if /proc/bus/input/devices talks about keyboard, it's
probably atkbd. The psmouse stuff doesn't happen in this case.

For 0.0.12, I plan to look at 'softrepeat' and 'resolution' files
in serioX sysfs directory; this distinguishes nicely between atkbd
and psmouse device, and it should break *visibly* for exotic stuff
like newton kbd, which is an improvement over the current approach
of load atkbd and hope for the best.

Regarding evdev and mousedev: you don't need these to boot the system,
but if mouse or keyboard is loaded from initramfs rather than /etc/init.d,
you no longer can assume evdev and mousedev get sucked in as a side-effect,
and they are probably needed: evdev is what allows yaird to find the keyboard,
mousedev is expected by X-Windows.

It would probably be more straightforward to load them from /etc/modules,
but that would require manual intervention by the sysadm: the system no longer
works out of the box for common configurations. Lets not do that.

Erik

I think that it something has to do with glibc, but I have to
investigate that. I will do that in the upcoming days.

 Also, what's the

Have you got any versions of sed installed besides the standard one in
/bin?
Yepp. There was an old sed version left, which was installed
under /usr/bin/sed ( Version 3.02 ). /usr/bin/sed did not belong to any
package. I did not install this version actively. I removed the old sed
version and the preinstallation script worked. This problem seems to be
related to sed and not to ncurses-base.
You can resolve this bug. = Bugreport for sed ( unclean update )?

Bug#328943: x11vnc bug

2005-09-18 Thread James Curbo

I'm seeing this as well - the command I'm using is

x11vnc -auth /var/lib/gdm/\:0.Xauth -cursor most -forever -shared
-display :0 -repeat

and the last part of the output is similar

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x0813bc90 ***
caught signal: 6

It seems to happen most often to me when using amarok. The computer I
have x11vnc running on is hooked into my stereo system and projector and
thus I use VNC from my workstation to control it. I've noticed when
amarok does flashy things (the OSD triggers it a lot) that this error
occurs. There have been other times as well but these are the specific
ones I can remember.

I grabbed 0.7.3 from the previous response and will report back after it
runs a while to see if it fixes the error.

nice one, i didn't know the ODE project. you could file as a prospective
package. (see http://www.us.debian.org/devel/wnpp/#l1 )

that use pyrex won't compile with gcc-4.0, which is debian
unstable's default. This renders pyrex unusable on debian unstable.

are you sure? i couldn't compile pyode with pyrex 0.9.3-3 or upstream's
0.9.3.1.

i thought most gcc 4.0 issues were fixed in the -3 debian version (see
#298084). dbus and pyspeex compile fine with both 0.9.3-3 and 0.9.3.1.

There is a new upstream version (0.9.3.1) that purpotely fixes this
 problem.

and which is 2 days old :) thanks for the info.

command queries www.apt-get.org and you are probably able to request
there that the experimental package archive be included in their
list.

Wajig currently provides access to unofficial packages (find-pkg and
unofficial), but I don't see a way to
query experimental. Would it be possible add an experimental command,
and perhaps extend find-pkg to look
in both places, adding appropriate warnings?

When I choose tags from different threes I would like to get them AND'ed

Now the same produces all pictures taken in a church and all pictures

Description:
Hello,

this is about Debian Bug#316388, in which Joey Hess (CC'ed) argues
that Mutt should not be requiring GPG_TTY to be set in order to accept
using gnupg-agent. I think he has a point; I will now explain what I
understand the current situation is, and how I think it could be
  improved.

 Marco d'Itri wrote:
On Jun 30, Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

   gpg-agent 1.9.15-6 does not set a GPG_TTY variable. I tried setting
this variable and mutt began using the agent properly.
I understand that this is a feature. Feel free to argue against it with
  the upstream developers.

current versions of gpg and pinentry work perfectly well, even
at the console, without GPG_TTY being set. gpg falls back to using
ttyname() and other methods to get the tty to pass to pinentry.

Yes, this paragraph is true. If you invoke gpg at the console without
GPG_TTY set, it'll figure out there's a tty involved and will tell
  pinentry that; so it'll work.

However, this is not the case if it's Mutt who invokes gpg, since then
the stdin, stdout, and stderr of the gpg process will be pipes, and
gpg will not be able to figure out there's a tty involved; so it'll
  fail.

Obviously, when in X11 and using pinentry-qt or pinentry-gtk, the
  above does not apply.

  So, we have that:

(a) either at the console, or in X11 but with gnupg-agent configured
to use pinentry-curses, it is _required_ that GPG_TTY is set for
gpg calls to succeed, and Mutt takes care of enforcing that.

(b) when in X11 with gnupg-agent configured to use a pinentry-x11,
GPG_TTY is not needed at all, yet Mutt does require it.

The current behavior of the code with respect to this is to just
always (*) require GPG_TTY to be set, but this is not documented at
  all.

(*) Of course, it's impossible for Mutt to distinguish beteween (a)
and (b).

 * * *

_If_ we accept Joey's point that Mutt has no business enforcing the
presence of GPG_TTY, since there are cases when it is not needed, I
see two possible solutions (with #2 being my prefered option, since it
  just makes things work):

1. remove the check for GPG_TTY, and add to the documentation of
$pgp_use_gpg_agent that some pinentry agents will need it to
work. Attached gpg_tty.patch1 which does this.

2. remove the check for GPG_TTY, and make the pgp_use_gpg_agent
function add it to the environment if it's not present. Attached
gpg_tty.patch2 does this, which I'm considering adding to the
Debian package (though I'd welcome comments first).

Bug#318101: not believed to be vulnerable

2005-09-18 Thread dann frazier
Micah, Thanks for detecting this; however, I don't think
systemimager-ssh is vulnerable.

systemimager-ssh includes its own copy of zlib because of a dependency
in the ssh binary it builds. These binaries are downloaded by a client
system and used to set up a tunnel to the server. The ssh commands used
are pre-determined, and do not enable compression. I audited the ssh
source, and every use of zlib that I can find is conditional upon the
compression option.

Therefore I don't believe systemimager-ssh should be considered
vulnerable to vulnerabilities in zlib.

Unfortunately, compression is not a build-time option for openssh, so it
would be somewhat invasive to remove the unused zlib library.

 muttrc.5 presently reads:

This variable configures how often (in seconds) POP

And it wasn't clear to me that this applies only when connected to a

I don't know the current status of SVG backend, but AFAICT is one of the

More generally, listing the supported backend in the extended

Bug#329017: kdebase-bin: khotkeys somehow messes up konqueror

2005-09-18 Thread Andreas Pakulat
Package: kdebase-bin
Version: 4:3.4.2-3
Severity: important

Hi,

I don't know how, but khotkey messes up konqueror as well as kcalc when
I start those via a hotkey.

Behaviour is that both apps seem to lack any UI-stuff. The menus look
like TK style or so and the highlighting of letters is done via red
background. This doesn't happen for quanta or kile or kdevelop.

If I change the mime-type with text/plain, it will load properly as

Maybe po-compat.el should be corrected to also support this new
 mimetype.

Maybe xml2pot should be fixed to create correct .pot files instead.

If the result is a pot file, it should be text/plain, as every other pot file.
If it is not a pot file, there is no point in calling it xml2pot.

Unfortunately, libsvg-cairo (the .so library) does not seem to be
packaged in Debian, please correct me if I'm wrong. If you really
insist, I suppose I could package it also... (it might be a better idea
to try to ask the libcairo packager first, though)

More generally, listing the supported backend in the extended

Right, I'll add the list of supported backends to the package
description (which won't include svg).

Bug#329018: azureus: please don't hard-code startSocket port

2005-09-18 Thread Henrik Johansson
Package: azureus
Version: 2.3.0.4-3
Severity: wishlist

On multi-user operating systems, it would make sense to run one azureus
instance/user. The current implementation, which always checks port 6880 for
a running instance, only allows one instance/machine. (Unless
-DMULTI_INSTANCE=true is given, in which case a new instance is started every
time.)

Current behavior:
If I am running azureus on my uid, and my roommate (who is logged in
on the same computer) tries to start one, azureus tries to feed his
arguments to my instance instead. (I'm not sure if it works, but it's
not what I want anyway.)

Wanted behavior:
If no azureus instance is running with the users uid, an instance is
started. If an instance already exists with the users uid, args are
passed to it.

Proposed solution 1 (quick):
Add a setting for which port to check and use for the StartSocket.

Proposed solution 2 (good, but perhaps platform dependent):
Check ports within some (hard coded) range for a running instance with
the same uid as the starting instance. Start a new instance if none is
found.

KleanSweep allows to reclaim disk space by finding unneeded files.
It can search for files basing on several criterias:
   * empty files
   * backup files
   * broken symbolic links
   * dead menu entries (.desktop files pointing to non-existing executables)

2005-09-18 Thread Jon Westgate
Package: xine-ui
Version: 0.99.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After upgrading glibc (libc6) xine loads, but dies as soon as you try to
do anything with it like right clicking on the video window.
I fixed that by just rebuilding xine-ui from source (apt-get source
xine-ui -b) and installing the newly built deb.

I have since built a deb using the source code from xinehq.de
0.99.4

I would just release this new version as the one in unstable (sid) is
nearly 7 months old, has an xmas splash screen and is a bit stale.

Bug#329024: libselinux1 (testing) missing a build depend

2005-09-18 Thread John Dahlstrom

Package: libselinux1
Version: 1.24-4

This package allows an attempted build to proceed, even while a
required library (libattr1-dev?) is missing. The build fails with:

fgetfilecon.lo(.text+0x69): In function `fgetfilecon':
/extra/trash/deb-/ss/libselinux-1.24/src/fgetfilecon.c:22: undefined
reference to `fgetxattr'

[...]

Installing libattr1-dev, and adding -lattr to the appropriate location
in a Makefile, yields a complete build. Beyond that, I do not know
whether there exist additional unspecified requirements or options for
this package.

Regards,

- John

Per-Arne,

Thanks for this wishlist report.

However it is somewhat beyond the scope of the debian package to implement.

Might I suggest that you also file this as a wishlist on the upstream digikam
bug tracking system, which you can find in Digikam itself, under the Help
menu, Report Bug...

When I choose tags from different threes I would like to get them AND'ed
 together. For example:

Wedding and Church = Pictures taken under the wedding in the church.

Now the same produces all pictures taken in a church and all pictures
 taken under a wedding.

Odd, I thought I closed that bug in the last upload.

when syntax highlighting is enabled, Vim colors a search entry in
/etc/resolv.conf in white on red if the domain includes a dash (-),

Can you post an example on which the problem is reproducible?

I tried adding dashes at random in the domain part of search entries and
vim never highlighted them as errors. Also, at first glance, dash seems
to be properly handled in the syntax highlighting code of resolve.conf.

 Thanks for the report.
 Cheers.

Follow-up Comment #2, bug #12477 (project gnustep):

Note that on a Swiss French keyboard the pipe, ampersand and hash keys are no
longer available with this bug.

Could the problem be due to lineakd which I installed (to support the
Logitech Access keyboard)?

I think the pipe and ampersand commands seemed to work beforehand.

Mozilla Firefox 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 does not choose the challenge with the
strongest authentication scheme available as required by RFC2617, which
might cause credentials to be sent in plaintext even if an encrypted channel
 is available.

 For details, see http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/405666

Seems there's a patch now, but it hasn't been reviewed, and the
mozilla developers don't seem tremendously concerned.

Before with gimp-print 4.2.7 there was no problem.

PS: During the configuration, after that I've selected the ppd file a
warning dialog window has been open which talked about inktype (?)

 Hi,

During the Debian QA meeting hold during Sept. 09th till 11th, we
decided that looking at packages that haven't been uploaded for a very
long time could cover up some QA problems.

I've done this now and your package showed up on the list. I propose
 to remove it.
The package has not many users and there are some alternatives (worklog,
 wmwork) available.

This usually means that your package matched some of the following
 criteria:

[1] Your packages has not had a maintainer upload for more than
  three years.

[2] has one or more RC bugs with no answer from the maintainer (**)

[3] the state of your packages in general seems to indicate that you
  might be MIA

[4] (if we propose a removal) it shows in popcon as having less than
100 users with the package installed.

[5] the package was not released with sarge

 and at least ([1] and ( [2] or [3] or [4] or [5] )) was true.

(**) The maintainer not answering to RC bugs refers to bugs filed
more than one month before the time the check was performed.

After 7 days without answer from you (the maintainer) we will reassign
this bug to either WNPP (in case we propose to orphan it) or
ftp.debian.org (in case we propose to remove it).

The package will need an upload or an explanation for this action not to
 proceed.

Please do *not* upload a package just to get off this list - it won't
help the package at all. Maintainers should be responsive and feel
responsible for their packages without needing other people to force
them to do work. Sometimes, finding a new maintainer or even removing
the package completly from the archive is better for Debian's users.

 Thanks!

 Marc

Bug#323193: mutt: Cannot use previously expired key

* Bas Wijnen [Mon, 15 Aug 2005 13:00:14 +0200]:

 Package: mutt
 Version: 1.5.9-2
 Severity: important

Hello,

I prefer to use encrypted e-mail in personal communication whenever
possible. Mutt usually works very well for that, but lately I have
 found a problem:

A friend had set an expiration date on his key. When the key expired,
there was no reason to believe it to be compromised, so he set a new
expiration date. I also signed the key again, as my old signature had
 also expired.

When I tell mutt to send encrypted e-mail to him, mutt asks me which key
I want. In the list, his key doesn't appear. When I manually enter the
 ID, it is not accepted.

I have not found a way to use this key for encryption with mutt. It
works fine when I use it directly with gpg.

Can you please do a quick test if this is still reproducible with mutt
1.5.10-1, and with this 1.5.11 pacakge?:

http://people.debian.org/~adeodato/tmp/2005-09-19/mutt-1.5.11-pre/mutt_1.5.11-1~pre1_i386.deb

If it is, would you mind creating a couple of gpg keys, and send a tgz
of the resulting ~/.gnupg that shows the problem?

  Thanks,

Hi Chris,

My XMMS is a new install. Since I sent in the bug, I have managed to invoke
XMMS as a plug-in in Konqueror by clicking on the listen button on
various Shoutcast streams. XMMS takes about 1 to 2 minutes to
automatically connect to the shoutcast server at which point it plays
normally provided one does not click on the play button in the XMMS
 skin.

If play is clicked, XMMS shuts down. Bug report # 191536 on XMMS
mentioned XMMS freezing when play is clicked. So far, all I have tested
is XMMS on streaming audio. Haven't tried it on a cd yet or playlists.

Might be just a quirk of 64 bit sarge installation. Trying out Debian for
the first time on a new machine so still learning the ropes. Along with
SuSE, Debian is a great o/s. The less said about Windows XP Home Edition,
 the better.

Regards,

Felix B

xmms when opened as an application, immediately crashes and ceases to
function. Clicking the play applet in xmms, causes xmms to freeze to
the desktop after which xkill must be invoked to delete xmms from the
  desktop.

I can't reproduce the problem here. Could you provide more information?
The incoming maintainer will likely need more data to investigate
properly. Did XMMS just cease functioning one day, or did you just
install it? If you launch XMMS from a console, what errors appears on the
console when it crashes? If you upgrade to the package in Sid, does the
 problem change?

Bug#328990: wxwindows2.4: FTBFS on m68k due to -O3

2005-09-18 Thread Ron

Hi,

Shouldn't this be a bug against the m68k toolchain? Unless something
in wxPython changed that I am not aware of, it has always done this
(and not been a problem) previously, no?

I'm not wholly against patching this package in the name of pragmatism,
especially if a release were otherwise immediately pending, but since
it is not, shouldn't we aim this at the real problem first?

Please feel free to reassign it if you agree that is the case.
Otherwise, someone will need to convince me that this does not have
an adverse affect on all the other platforms. (ergo convince me
that _I_ should not reassign it ;-)

cheers,
Ron

 Hello,

wxwindows2.4 FTBFS on m68k, presumably due to the use of -O3 to
compile wxPython. Lowering the optimization level to -O2 should help.

   This will probably bite wxwidgets2.6.

Bug#329041: valgrind: Valgrind is being compiled with SSE instruction set

2005-09-18 Thread Nach M. S.
Package: valgrind
Version: 1:3.0.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Whoever is compiling Valgrind for i386 is compiling it with -msse making
it incompatible on every machine without SSE support, basically anything
before the P3/AXP.

I originally reported this bug direct to valgrind team since it affected
source package of 3.0.0 from their site too.
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110813

They fixed configure putting -msse in the makefile for 3.0.1, I can
confirm that using their 3.0.1 source I no longer have issues running
it.

However, whoever compiled 3.0.1 package for Debian must have used a
machine which supports SSE because I'm getting illegal instructions
with Debian's version.

Bug#329042: shared-mime-info: OpenOffice.org Calc file detection errors

2005-09-18 Thread Jean Pierre Rupp
Package: shared-mime-info
Version: 0.16-3
Severity: normal

OK, I know OpenOffice.org Calc files are zip files, but the MIME
database should not treat them as zip files because then desktop
environments like GNOME try to open them as such using applications like
file-roller.

If other OpenOffice.org files that are zip files also are not registered
as so in the database, then Calc files should not either.

Note this bug only affects files for OpenOffice.org version 1.x and not
OpenOffice.org v2.x files (Oasis format).

Just removing the sub-class-of type=application/zip/ statement on
the /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml file and running
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime/packages solves the problem, this
file type is not asociated to file-roller anymore on GNOME, as it should
have been since the beginning.

Another problem I find is that application/sun.vnd.xml.calc.template
files are first shown with the default icon. After I click on one of
them on Nautilus it gets the SXC icon and MIME type as if it was an
OpenOffice.org Calc file and not an OpenOffice.org Calc template file.
It gets treaded as a Calc file also.

Bug#329043: /usr/include/bits/syscall.h incomplete

2005-09-18 Thread Ryan Murray
Package: libc6-dev
Version: 2.3.5-6
Severity: serious

/usr/include/bits/syscall.h on mips and mipsel only contains definitions for
the ABI-specific syscalls. The rest of the syscalls (suchs as SYS_pivot_root)
are missing, which is causing other packages to build without support for
the syscall, and in some cases, causing them to FTBFS (util-linux)

Bug#329044: shared-mime-info: Incorrectly detects text/directory

2005-09-18 Thread Jean Pierre Rupp
Package: shared-mime-info
Version: 0.16-3

Through filename the file seems to be a vCard, as it correctly is, but
after clicking with Nautilus it does a magic check and concludes is a
application/x-gmc-link file. It does this because it finds the text URL:
in the begining of the file. This is not a really good magic for the GMC
links, it should be dropped in favor of a better match or filename
extension matching, which, by the way, is not getting done for this
filetype.
