I have tried and successed escape from vserver's guest by using the expolits[2], and failed on the test of testfs.sh script[1], could you please do both tests on your 2.4 kernel patched with old style patch to confirm the is really a security problem. [1] http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/SCRIPT/testfs.sh-0.09 [2] http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/rootesc.c I'm not sure if this is related, but Bertl has found that the util-vserver packages in sarge don't work for most architectures. The util-vserver syscall stuff seems to do a compile-time check if the vserver syscall for a given architecture works, and if it does not, it falls back to the _i386_ syscall number. Bertl's tests also indicate that this problem still exists in sarge for some architectures. He has put together some of his tests at: http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Stuff/Debian/ (the util-vserver* files) If it turns out that this is not related we should probably file a separate bugreport about this issue, since it makes the util-vserver package useless on most architectures. Thanks a lot for the information. It is most probably related but not 100% sure. Hi Ola,在 2005/10/3 上午 1:54 時,Ola Lundqvist 寫到:How did you tested and found what kind of security problem?I assume you found you couldn't pass the test 109,121 of testfs.sh script, right? Actually I run the rootesc program and saw that it was possible toescape.I think the rootesc program is only working for the bug in 2.4 kernel patches in Debian, for other fails in testfs.sh, I guess probably needs other exploit.I have upgraded to 0.30.208-2, I still got the same fails on i386, but no errors on powerpc after I rebuilt the util-vserver package from source. Ahh now I see. Missed that you used different architectures in yourtesting.Yes, that's why I have another powerpc related bug report.Sorry for the confusion, I will help to test on i386 and powerpc for you.I wonder why it do not fail after your rebuild. Maybe it passonly if I compile on a vserver patched system...Could you please confirm this?Maybe, I should recompile the kernel patch+tools on i386 with a vserver 2.0 patched system, cause I got fails on 2.6.12 and util-vserver 0.30.208-2 from sid still, but all pass with same version from sid on powerpc after a rebuild of util-vserver package.-Andrew

You should make a loopback file and run losetup /dev/loop4 loopbackfile before run the testfs.sh script. The VCI shouldn't be none if you have setup /dev/loop4 correctly, I did same thing and got same errors when I forgot to setup the /dev/ loop4 after a reboot. Here is what I did for create a loopback file and the run losetup: # dd bs=1024k count=1024 if=/dev/zero of=1gb.testfile # losetup /dev/loop4 1gb.testfs Note: I have other loopback files running on /dev/loop{0,1,2,3} already, so I use /dev/loop4 in my case. Very sorry for made your confused. Could you please test it again? I think the testfs.sh script will give you information of VCI and do the real checks on each task after you setup /dev/loop4 correctly. If the testfs.sh give you fails on 109 and 121, that can confirm this is bug. For other fails, you may ask Bertl, cause upstream author knows much more than me, also much better than I forward your questions to him. :) I suggest to put or mention these test tasks in util-vserver package for our users to make sure the vserver patch+tools work properly. Bug#331117: longrun: added configuration file support (-C)

Currently, the supported options in the configuration file are cpuid=, msr=, and verbose. The default configuration file is set at /etc/longrun.conf when -C is invoked without an argument. This is contrary to how almost all unix programs work -- having to specify an option to turn on use of a configuration file is weird. Expected behavior is for a config file to be used if it's present. What's the reason for this weirdness? The reason is because I wasn't sure if it should be the default behavior -- and just to make it optional first. If it should be the default behavior, then it can be made so in the future. Since this is an experimental feature, it would be best put as a command line option first so as not to break other applications that rely on this program _not_ having a configuration file. Aside from these, I have chosen to make it first a flag in the command line so as to be able to specify different configuration files instead of just a default configuration file. -utility is used to control and query LongRun settings on Transmeta -Crusoe processors. +utility is used to control and query LongRun settings on Transmeta(tm) +Crusoe(tm) processors. +.P This program requires that the Linux CPUID and MSR devices be compiled into the kernel (or loaded as kernel modules), that the CPUID character device be readable, and that the MSR character device be both readable and writable. +.P #define VERSION 0.9 -#define REVDATE 2001-02-14 +#define REVDATE 2005-10-1 The above changes seem to have nothing to do with adding the config file. Yes, they are aesthetic changes for the (1) manual page and (2) for wherever REVDATE is used. +#define _GNU_SOURCE + /* use GNU getline to read the lines and extract pertinent informationa This makes longrun require glibc to work, which seems undesirable and not really needed since the config file contains very short and simple lines that could be esily read using standard C functions. I used getline to avoid possible problems when dealing with fixed size stack/heap allocated variables. And also so that file reading would look really simple compared to having fgets() that need previously allocated memory before being able to properly read the contents of the file. I just thought that using fscanf() and/or fgets() were not very good to look at in the code. But you are right with it going to need glibc. I should try going about it some other way then. -- Dean Michael C. This package brings common methods for database servers interactions as well as standardized templates for prompting information. This allows avoiding repetitive templates for several packages, all using slightly different wordings (sometimes even incorrect wording) which gives a lot of work to translators. Thus, users that don't have a ~/.winerc (or ~/.wine/config) file will not be able to run Wine, unless they set up a ~/.wine/config file for themselves. This is easily done with the winesetup tool, found in the winesetuptk package (or else each user can copy the old /etc/wine.conf to ~/.winerc and let wine convert it). If you remove the /etc/wine.conf file, then winesetup will launch automatically for users that don't have a config file, instead of requiring the users to do any of the above themselves. msgstr Wine försöker inte längre att ladda /etc/wine.conf som standard. #. Bug#331191: procps: sysctl.conf doesn't take wildcards
Package: procps Version: 1:3.2.5-1 Severity: normal Hi, recently, the netbase package has begun to complain if the deprecated file /etc/network/options is still being used. The suggested migration way is to use /etc/sysctl.conf with appropriate entries. The /e/n/o option spoofprotect echos 1 into /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/*/rp_filter, which prompts a sysctl.conf entry of net/ipv4/conf/*/rp_filter=1. sysctl.conf doesn't grok this and complains about an invalid key. To ease the transition from /e/n/o to sysctl.conf, sysctl should be able to expand the wildcard. Bug#330830: netbase: what to do with /etc/network/options
On Fri, Sep 30, 2005 at 12:52:07PM +0200, Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe wrote: Well, what about generating some hints about what to write to sysctl.conf (probably based on network/options) then? Finally, it doesn't matter if you put them in debconf and make them dynamic or static in README.Debian. I agree with Mario here. There are not many options in /e/n/o anyway, so it would not be an unreasonable request to at least document which entries in /etc/sysctl.conf will replace which option in /e/n/o. Especially in the case of spoofprotect, since sysctl doesn't seem to expand wildcards in /etc/sysctl.conf and thus the naive approach of writing net/ipv4/conf/*/rp_filter=1 in /etc/sysctl.conf doesn't work. Bug#331192: procps: please offer replacement for /etc/network/options
Package: procps Version: 1:3.2.5-1 Severity: normal Hi, the netbase package has unloaded the burden of setting rp_filter, ip_forwarding and syncookies on procps by simply removing support for /etc/network/options and documenting the transition as should be replaced by values in /etc/sysctl.conf or equivalent custom scripts. I would love to see procps picking up the job by delivering appopriate settings with documentation in the default version of /etc/sysctl.conf, maybe even by parsing /etc/network/options in the postinst. Bug#330155: update-rc.d fails special case
[Jörg] It adds only the last for the same runlevel. But the embedded updatercd in /var/lib/dpkg/info/initscripts.postinst does it right. Do you like to fix it? I think it is rarely used that way but it should work. I believe it is a bad idea to try to insert the same init.d script several times in the startup sequence for a given runlevel. When doing this, it is no longer possible to use dependency information embedded in the script header (like the LSB init.d comment headers) to verity correct boot sequence. If a script need to be executed twice, I would recommend making one wrapper with its own dependency information in the header calling the other script. Because of this, I believe your example should fail, and that the current behaviour should be kept. The code in postinst should be changed to only install a given init.d script once.
Bug#331195: cron-apt: aptitude update makes diffs appear where there are none
Package: cron-apt Version: 0.3.1 Severity: wishlist when APTCOMMAND is aptitude, MAILON=changes doesn't work very well. The reason is that aptitude displays the downloaded package files even with --quiet=2 (at least when output is redirected as cron-apt does, see the latest development in #217477), and the order of package files received greatly depends on network and server load and is basically random. Of course, the function diffing aptitudes output from the last run sees that as a diff and sends a message. While this misbehavior (ignoring quiet on redirected output) will probably be fixed in experimental aptitude soon, I would _love_ to see cron-apt also work with sarge's aptitude. Would you be willing to accept a patch which would cause cron-apt to ignore all lines matching ^\(Get:\|Ign[[:space:]]\|Hit[[:space:]]\) in $APTCOMMAND's output? Bug#331198: longrun: added configuration file support (-C)
Package: longrun Version: 0.9-16 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch *** Please type your report below this line *** Added support for external configuration file defined through -C. Currently, the supported options in the configuration file are cpuid=, msr=, and verbose. The default configuration file is set at /etc/longrun.conf if it exists in the system. The new changes are based on suggestions of Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] regarding the (mis)use of getline. This new patch now makes use of fgets() for reading from a stream, and removes the need for glibc. This allows the defaults for longrun to be defined in the configuration file instead of in the source code in compile time. This added feature can easily be extended as necessary in the future. Bug#331199: Wrong character encoding in parts retrived from apt

Bug#309437: Bug#309604: Bug#309437: libpango1.0-common - libpango1.0-0 circular dependencies
Hi Seb, hi Akira Tagoh, Do you recall why libgtk2.0-common depends on libgtk2.0-0? I could only find a changelog snipset in 2.4.1-1: * Akira TAGOH [EMAIL PROTECTED] + debian/control: - added libgtk2.0-0 to Depends for libgtk2.0-common. (from 2.2.4-6). - libgtk2.0-dev requires libxext-dev. (Closes: #247469) I didn't find any obvious reason for having a libgtk2.0-common depends on libgtk2.0-0 constraint, apart of the fact that libgtk2.0-common is useless without libgtk2.0-0. Bug#331203: RFH: gutenbrowser -- Project Gutenberg Etext reader
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I request assistance maintaining the gutenbrowser package. It is in need of upstream development (the upstream author is busy with other projects, and do not work on it). I have access to the upstream CVS, but do not have time required to do any development. There are serious bugs in the package. I maintain it because I believe the Debian project should have a nice new-user friendly Project Gutenberg browser to make the texts easy to access for even the novice user. I've not found any better package to do this than the gutenbrowser package. This is the current package description: gutenbrowser is a reader for etexts produced by Project Gutenberg. It integrates with KDE. You only need the libraries to run it though. Project Gutenberg (http://promo.net/pg/index.html) aims to make public domain literature available to the world in ASCII text format. I welcome co-maintainers and developers. Bug#331142: horde3: Choosing Danish (da_DK) produces mixture of English and Danish translation
Hi Martin, On Sat, 1 Oct 2005, Martin Lohmeier wrote: Brian Truelsen wrote: Package: horde3 Version: 3.0.5-1 Severity: minor I report this to horde3 as the problem propagates into all Horde modules. For instance in Inbox with in imp4 I get this top-level choosers: Inbox(4) 1 til 45 af 45 meddelelser [Vælg v] [Marker som: v] Flyt | Kopier [Meddelelser til v] Delete | Undelete | Blacklist | Whitelist | Forward Skjul slettede | Purge Deleted As you can see this is a nice mixture. this is just because the danish translation is not complet. I think you are welcome to help with the translation. I you intend to do so, join the Mailing list [1]. To see the status of the translation, see http://dev.horde.org/~jan/i18n/index.php?branch=FRAMEWORK_3sort=lang#da_DK I'd like to but I think the problem is located elsewhere. When I look inside imp's .po file for da_DK then the translations that trigger my report are actually performed. E.g. Purge deleted IS actually translated into Fjern slettede but nevertheless it is not translated online. strings imp.mo shows the presences of the translation and I have tried to regenerate the .mo file from the .po file to no avail. I'd be happy to invest some time doing some translation but I fear it will be a waste of time until the translations already performed pull through. Could it be some underlying gettext issue ? Brian.
Bug#331204: dselect: display re-drawing after page down badly covers previous content.
Package: dselect Version: 1.13.11 Severity: normal Since last update the normal tree structure of dselect has changed. This shouldn't be a problem except that when using page down instead of arrow down the new display (from below the screen) does not cover the current display content completly, so I see half words. Apparently, what I see is that page down re-draws screen following older tree structure (with extra indentation for each sub-section), while arrow down re-draws lines where all lines start at the left side of the screen (no extra indentation for each sub-sections). Anyway, it looks confusing. Note: I realise that for many people, dselect is outdated and should disappear, and dselect can be very confusing for new people. However, I still think it very efficient in what it does, and I'm glad it is still supported. Hopefully dselect will stay for a while yet. Package: aptitude Version: 0.2.15.9-6 Severity: normal The bug db related to aptitude is filling up with bug reports that have become irrelevant, either because of updates, or because they are duplicates. because of this people (myself included) who want to report new bugs get the impression the package is not maintained anymore. I have this usability bug to report, but when searching the DB to see if it had already been reported, I see many bug that look so much alike that they just must be the same problem (e.g. look for bugs related to holding a package). I realise programming is much more fun than doing the administrative work. But surely cleaning up is part of the maintainer's job. Sorry, I did not mean to be ungratefull, I really do appreciate the great work all maintainers are doing, and this includes you. Keep up the good work, but do clean up. Bug#331213: please lower priority of display mode question
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-6 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch According to debconf specification [1], high priority is for items that don't have a reasonable default. The debconf debconf template says high is for rather important questions. IMHO, this doesn't apply to the resolution question and the priority should be lowered to medium. This problem is specialy relevant when using the /etc/init.d/xserver-xorg script. On a livecd, user will be asked for the resolution on every boot which is often not wanted (this is the case for Ging [2]). I think the only essential questions for a livecd are video driver (in case vesa/vga don't work) and mice (in case auto-detection failed). As for reasonable defaults, I think the current default (1024x768, 800x600, 640x480) is quite reasonable, but I would recommend using an empty list as default instead. In case you agree with both lowering the priority, and using an empty list as default, you can use the patch I'm attaching. Thanks! I really have no strong opinion on the question; the best guides to Recommends vs. Suggests are the wording in policy, and user feedback. :) It sounds to me like these would be better as Suggests than Recommends, but I don't know the package, so I don't have much to base that judgement on...
