Bug#365971: doesn't support generating valid xhml

2006-05-04 Thread Joey Hess
Package: libhtml-scrubber-perl
Version: 0.08-2
Severity: normal

HTML::Scrubber seems to have no support for generating valid XHTML 1.0
Strict. It converts invoming valid hr / to hr. Probably the best way
to fix this would be to add a config option that turns on using hr /
and similar.

Bug#237100: New French translation update

2006-05-04 Thread Christian Perrier
Hello,

The recent release that changed some templates did NOT include the
French translation I sent in this bug report. Even though it would
have been broken by these templates changes, it is way better to apply
pending translation updates *anyway*.

The very low bug number for this updates makes me think that debconf
translation updates like this one are more or less rotting in the
BTS. This is unfortunate for the efforts of translators.

BTW, the templates of this package are still incredibly verbose with
most of the information really pertaining to README files...

Bug#365948: x11-common: broken depends on compat package xfree86-common

2006-05-04 Thread Steve Langasek
On Wed, May 03, 2006 at 06:35:56PM -0400, Ray Kohler wrote:
 Package: x11-common
 Version: 1:7.0.16
 Severity: grave
 Justification: renders package unusable

Version 7.0.16 of x11-common depends on xfree86-common, which is a
useless compatibility package. Making things worse is that
xfree86-common conflicts with x11-common. This prevents x11-common from
 being installed at all.

I screwed this up. It installs fine if I do it right.

So your assessment is that there's no bug here? What way did you do it
first that was wrong, btw?

On Thu, May 04, 2006 at 10:15:29AM +0800, Haifeng Chen wrote:

 The installation is not clean.

You can find the following script in the xfree86-common.postinst.

 # Just move the Xsession file if it's still around
 if [ -f /etc/X11/Xsession ]; then
   mv /etc/X11/Xsession /etc/X11/Xsession.xfree86
 fi

Right... this is a problem because plenty of users already *have* an
x11-common on their system (in unstable) that contains /etc/X11/Xsession, so
this code deletes the x11-common version of the config file for those users
-- not the xfree86-common version!

The workaround is, after upgrade, to run

  apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss x11-common

to restore the missing /etc/X11/Xsession file.

This bug will only affect upgrades within unstable; it will not affect users
who are still running testing, so technically this is not release-critical
(it doesn't need to be fixed before xorg is updated in testing), but it's
still rather nasty...

Bug#365973: ifupdown: preinst and postinst both create interfaces if it doesn't exist

2006-05-04 Thread Peter Cordes
Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.6.7
Severity: normal

I think that only one of the preinst and postinst scripts should create
/etc/network/interfaces. Specifically, preinst should not create
it. Or if it does, move the code from the postinst to the
preinst (so the created file will have a stanza for lo).

This isn't normally a problem, because debian-installer's netcfg
writes /etc/network/interfaces itself, and FAI munges it too...

I ran into this while hacking my FAI scripts to only write
/etc/network/interfaces if it didn't exist, which is where the version
created by the pre/postinst scripts comes in. I found it
confusing, so I'm reporting a bug...

happy hacking,
Peter Cordes

 See: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/errata

But my case is not exactly what is described in the errata, I'm
afraid. If ata-piix is not loaded, ide-generic nicely handles both the
hard-drive and the CD on IBM Thinkpad T43, so my system is not entirely
SATA in this sense, and inability of libata to handle ATAPI is not a
show-stopper for this system. In fact I have custom kernel running on
the system that *does not* enable ATAPI support in libata and handles
the CD by ide-generic while hard-drive is handled by ata-piix.

 and: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataAtapiHowto

Yes, enabling ATAPI support in libata does allow the installer to see
the CD, but that's not the right thing to do for given hardware and
given kernel as ide-generic does support the CD nicely, and ATAPI
support in the current libata indeed has all kinds of problems.

Closing your report as this is a known issue.

emacs21-bin-common version 21.4a-3.1

Since there is no emacs21-bin-common version 21.4a-3.1 for i386 linux,
  the chain fails.

Simple fix - upload emacs21-bin-common 21.4a-3.1 for i386 and other
  arches.

Which, as documented in the merged bugs, was not possible because one of
 emacs21's build-dependencies was broken.

It's been fixed now in xaw3dg-dev 1.5+E-14, so fixed emacs21 packages should
begin dripping into incoming.debian.org in a couple of hours.

Well, I'm afraid I have to reopen this bug. It turns out that it was never
really an xaw3dg bug at all: emacs21 build-depends only on xaw3dg-dev, but
expects to find X11/Xaw/Paned.h, which has never been shipped by xaw3dg-dev
but only incidentally dragged in by a (wrong) dependency on libxaw7-dev.

Perhaps xaw3dg-dev should actually be installing its own headers as
X11/Xaw/*, I don't know; but in practice this is not the interface that
Xaw3d provides, upstream or in Debian, so emacs21 needs to either include
X11/Xaw3d/* instead of X11/Xaw/, or build-depend on libxaw7-dev.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

This usually happens because there's not enough video RAM available to
store the XVideo data. If increasing the amount of RAM reserved for
graphics via the VideoRam directive doesn't help, please post full X

Bug#365978: mkvmlinuz: doesn't clean up temporary directory

2006-05-04 Thread Colin Watson
Package: mkvmlinuz
Version: 20
Severity: minor

mkvmlinuz doesn't clean up its temporary working directory; the line at
the end of the script that would normally do this is commented out. I
appreciate that this might sometimes be useful for debugging, but could
this please be controlled by an option or an environment variable rather
than being the default behaviour?

(I noticed this when my 512MB /tmp filled up after a few d-i daily
builds.)

Thanks,

Bug#357025: udev: Some strange issues here as well

2006-05-04 Thread Marco d'Itri
On May 01, Mike Hommey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I guess it's the same bug: I got my loopback device renamed to wlan0...
It's not. Probably you have a rule with an all-zero MAC address
generated by an old version of the package.
Nope, there is no such thing.
Then please report the content of z25_persistent-net.rules and the
output of ip link.

It seems to happen when my pcmcia wifi card is plugged at boot time, but
it doesn't when it is unplugged. In that latter case, the loopback
remains named lo_temp, though. And the udev initialization freezes at
some point. Is there a way to get all the udev messages in a logfile so
that i can provide more useful information ?
What do you mean with freezes? Does the boot process continues after a
timeout or what?
A good debugging strategy may be to start the system with init=/bin/bash
and then manually run the init scripts.

Bug#365982: gnome-terminal: display is messed up in new tabs

2006-05-04 Thread Frédéric Gobry
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.14.1-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I've experienced an annoying bug with gnome-terminal since ~ 2.14.0.
When I open a new tab, applications that do fullscreen display (like less,
mutt,...) are not properly displayed, see a screenshot at:

 http://arch.pybliographer.org/~fred/gnome-terminal-bug.png

This is easily fixed by resizing the window, but will rehappen for every
new tab.

Note that this only happens when the terminal has been resized after its
opening. It looks as if the new tab believes it still has the size of
the initial window, before resizing.

(I'm pretty sure it must have been reported somewhere else, but I could
not find a report. sorry if this is a duplicate)

Frédéric

Please note, that it tries to *start* postgres again.

Also there is no script/programm called maininvoke-rc.d:

returns nothing. Could that be the cause for the failure?

Bug#365984: xfonts-base: old font dirs in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts not removed

2006-05-04 Thread Andrew Pimlott
Package: xfonts-base
Version: 1:1.0.0-3
Severity: minor

I'm not sure if this is the right place to report this, and it's
probably a known issue, but I couldn't find any mention of it. With the
X transition, font directories under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts are not
being removed because they still have fonts.dir, etc in them. Is there
a plan for removing those files and thus the containing directories when
there are no fonts left? Would it be sufficient to have
update-fonts-dir, etc, delete the generated files in the postrm? Or
will there be a special clean-up script when the transition is complete?

Bug#365980: Xorg dead

2006-05-04 Thread adambartley

Package: xserver-xorg

Version: 1.0.2-8

Severity: Critical

Nice one. The new updates for xorg (3 May) have wrecked it on powerpc
by removing /etc/X11/Xsession. /etc/X11/Xsession.d is still there.
Nice work, mongs. I am now stuck doing no work for several days until
you work it out, I guess. Please *pay attention* to your installation
scripts, as I suspect that this was unintentional.

I gave you all the infos to correct this and you didn't. You just had to read Mysql 5 documentation to understand how to
solve it, and you choosed a lamer's way ! Bravo !

Oh, of course. Attached.

This is against 5.00b4, but it applies cleanly to 4.24 as well. It's a
pretty trivial patch, as you can see

However, because r-cran-rodbc's dependency on r-base-core (= 2.0.0) is also
satisfied by r-base-core 2.1.0-1 in sarge, which I don't imagine is any more
compatible with r-cran-rodbc 1.1.6-2 than 2.2.1-6 is, this breaks partial
upgrades from stable, which is still an RC bug. If r-cran-rodbc 1.1.6-2
needs r-base-core 2.3, then it needs to depend on it explicitly so that
installing r-cran-rodbc from etch on a sarge system doesn't give you a
broken package.

The converse is also true; if the new r-base-core is incompatible with old
versions of r-cran-rodbc, then r-base-core should conflict with those old
versions...

BTW, r-base isn't actually very close to getting into testing.

It needs to build successfully on hppa first. I've requeued it now since
the build failure looks like a transient buildd problem, but there've so far
been two *different* transient buildd problems keeping it from building, so
it remains to be seen how many iterations it'll actually take to get it
built...

Bug#359328: More info

2006-05-04 Thread Wang Xu

Hi,

I met the same problem, and after substituting i915_dri.so with the
snapshot from freedesktop.org, there existed problems with some
applications yet.

when running ppracer and some other apps, it keeps blinking and looks
like it cannot synchronize.

However, for `neverball', it can stop blinking if I turn off the
reflection, and I do not know what is ``reflection'' and how it works,
anyway, it works.

glxgears also works and with the missing visual mode error just as
other 3D apps.

My card is a 855GM shipped with ASUS M2Ne laptop.

I can now confirm that only apt-get in etch is affected. My apt-get in

with debugging turned on) to help you diagnose this problem?

Sorry, I'm afraid not; I was only triaging the bug severity so that it
wasn't marked as a release-critical bug when the vast majority of users are
using apt-get ok, I'm not actually an apt maintainer and don't know the
internals enough to suggest how to debug this.

Bug#218105: License problems in teTeX: a release blocker?

2006-05-04 Thread Frank Küster
Hi release team, hi James,

I wanted to inform you about license problems with teTeX, and ask for
your input. This bug might become a release blocker for etch, or not.

teTeX is a compilation of individual works with individual licenses, and
at the moment the licenses of the individual parts are not listed in
debian/copyright, or anywhere else.

Here are the facts:

Good news:

We have finally set up an infrastructure that allows to keep track of
license information of individual CTAN packages and even individual
files, and create a proper debian/copyright file.

Bad news:

- Before this bug can be resolved, one needs to go through each
individual package and check its license and the list of files
covered. I have actually started doing that work, it is slowly but
continuously progressing, but we have still *a*lot* of work to do.

- In the small part I have already checked, I have found a considerable
number of files with unclear licenses (in other words, probably
intended to be free but not properly indicated) and some that are
  actually non-free.

- I expect that in the remaining part, things will be similar. In other
words, I expect non-free or unclearly licensed files in teTeX, which
  makes this bug release-critical.

- Even if I continue to work as I do now, I don't know when this will be
finished. And since my professional work situation might change in
the second half of this year, I might even be forced to do less.

There are some more points to consider additionally:

- Debian probably can't release without TeX: even if it could be dropped
as a dependency, replacing it as a build-dependency would be as hard
  work as resolving that bug.

- TeXlive, which could serve as an alternative, suffers from the same
problems (and profits from the same work and infrastructure)

- teTeX in sarge has the very same problems. I don't expect any
problems with the files added since then, because both CTAN package
authors and teTeX upstream have been much more license-aware in the
last years than in the old days.

This means that Debian stable wouldn't get any better by not
releasing etch because of this bug; but I don't know whether this
  warrants etch-ignore

- I actually do not expect that we get any real legal problems. The
files in question are and have been distributed so widely and for so
long that *distributabilty* cannot realistically be denied by anyone.
The problems are actually only questions of DFSG-freeness.

I intend to ask for help on this bug as soon as the scripts used have
been properly documented, be it release-critical for etch or not. But I
wanted to make you aware of that problem early.

Regards, Frank

P.S. Many thanks, James, for filing that bug, really. I would never have
imagined the mess teTeX actually is license-wise, and I'm learning a lot
about internal workings of a TeX distribution that way.

Duplicate of bug #365948. Either copy /etc/X11/Xsession.xfree86 back to

Bug#365991: cynthiune.app_0.9.5-1: FTBFS: build-depends not satisfiable on !x86*

2006-05-04 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: cynthiune.app
Version: 0.9.5-1
Severity: serious
Justification: no longer builds from source

The cynthiune.app package in unstable build-depends unconditionally on
libavifile-0.7-dev. avifile is an architecture-specific package that
will probably never be available on architectures other than x86 and x86_64
(i386 and amd64), because many of the plugins it builds depend on Windows
DLLS for operation. As a result, cynthiune.app now fails to build on most
architectures that it was built on previously, a regression that is holding
up the gnustep transition in testing. Please fix this bug ASAP.

I can't reproduce it either (geximon started on the same machine,
but I don't remember which machine had the X server, so I'll try
tonight with my Mac OS X machine, with and without trusted X11

OK, the error occurs only with untrusted X11 forwarding. This is not
a bug, but the error message is bad, as it doesn't explain anything,
so that the user doesn't know how to solve the problem. Worse, he may
think that there is a bug in geximon. Indeed the error is currently:

The program 'geximon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  [...]

The second sentence should probably be replaced by something like:

If the program is started remotely by SSH, then this could mean that
you are using untrusted X11 forwarding. You need to use ssh -Y or
add ForwardX11Trusted yes to your ssh_config.
Otherwise this probably reflects a bug in the program.

Bug#353981: Remove MySQL support (Closes: #353981, #304613)

 Hello,

Hi,

I must say, I find very deceptive the way you fixed this bug by removing
mysql support :( I gave you all the infos to correct this and you didn't.
You just had to read Mysql 5 documentation to understand how to solve it,
 and you choosed a lamer's way ! Bravo !

You may want to know a little more than you do about rdbms support in TUTOS
and the way it evolved in the BRANCH-2-0.

This project began with support for as many rdbm as you want to support, the
way it is usually done : the written (generated) SQL command can be sent by
using any protocol/library, then the resultset is parsed and its format is
adapted for further usage.

The problem with this way of supporting several RDBM is that the written
request is written once for all of them, hence for example if you support
MySQL (previous its version 5) you then can't write any subqueries in your
SQL.

When I was paid to develop TUTOS 2 branch, we made the choice to only support
PostgreSQL, our RDBM of choice. And I wrote some complex queries involving a
syntax MySQL wouldn't be able to understand.

The MySQL support in TUTOS was from there broken, but I forgot to mark this in
the debian package. Our way to resolve the debian bug was to effectively mark
tutos as being a PostgreSQL only project, a decision taken two years ago.

Hoping this answer will help you understand the choices, regards,

Indeed, as it is now in /proc/bus/isapnp. As it is not possible to
create a symlink in /proc, lspnp is completely unusable.

On my system, there's no /proc/bus/isapnp either. pnpbios-tools should
probably just be removed or something.
You probably have to load some kernel module or maybe your machine
  doesn't have any ISA slot?
In any case, some people still do use ISA cards.

I do have ISA devices, but the information has moved to /sys/bus/pnp
and is in a different format. lspnp needs to be rewritten...
Ah, I understand. Sorry.

To forward upstream then?

texconfig invokes vi to edit configuration files. Perhaps there should

vi is only the fallback if no EDITOR or VISUAL variable is set. But you
are right, we should patch texconfig and change this to sensible-editor.

Try installing acpid and apmd (they can both coexist on the machine,

 Hi,
your package depends on libmysqlclient12 which has been removed from the
archive. As your package already depends on libmysqlclient15-dev only a
rebuild (or binnmu??) should be needed to fix this problem.

I will upload a new package that doesn't depend on libmysqlclient12 anyway.

Bug#365967: x11-common: unnecessary use of pre-depends (354146)

2006-05-04 Thread Steve Langasek
severity 365967 grave
merge 365967 365988
thanks

Ok, let's go ahead and bump this severity and merge with 365988 et al.,
because the fix for this is the exact same: x11-common should *not* depend
on xfree86-common, *at all*, and there *definitely* shouldn't be any manual
twiddling of /etc/X11/Xsession on upgrade.

The deal is that the earlier error reported in 354146 was a *file* conflict
error, which could only happen in a version of x11-common that did not
Conflicts: xfree86-common. Since x11-common now Conflicts with
xfree86-common, xfree86-common is correctly removed first, then x11-common
is unpacked and takes over the config file, with conffile prompts only when
necessary.

So I believe the correct action here is to simply revert the xfree86-common
package and related pre-dependency.

There is probably some additional clean-up that could be done here, because
there are still orphaned xfree86-common config files in /etc/X11/Xsession.d
which duplicate the x11-common versions of these config files; however, the
current xfree86-common package doesn't do anything with these anyway because
it has its purge block in the postinst (!), so this shouldn't block getting
this more urgent upgrade problem fixed.

See [1] for details. This is supposedly fixed upstream in 2.2.8.

Calling this bug a remote nessus DoS is really an overstatement. Quite
sincerely, Ubuntu's advisory is really misleading when it says:

(...) a remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause
the Nessus daemon to crash.

The DoS can only be executed by:

- a local user with root privileges (needs to store a NASL script in some
of the NASL directories that Nessus loads)

- a remote *authenticated* user if the administrator has allowed users to
upload plugins to the server ( 'plugin_upload = yes' in nessusd.conf). This
is something that is disabled per default in the Debian package.

Moreover, plugins need to be cryptographically signed in order to be
loaded into the server (unless the admin has set 'nasl_no_signature_check =
yes' in nessusd.conf which, agains, defaults to 'no').

For an immediate fix, and for the sake of fixing Sarge you might find
 the Ubuntu patch [2] useful.

Thanks for the patch. I don't think this merits a DSA but will contact the
Security Team for input.

Javier

Bug#365998: lyx-qt: copy-paste to other X-apps does not work properly

2006-05-04 Thread Kai-Martin
Package: lyx-qt
Version: 1.3.6-1.1
Severity: normal

A selection of text cannot be pasted to other applications with the middle
mouse button. However, middle button cutn'paste works within lyx and from
other apps to lyx.

Workaround: Cut the selection with [ctrl-x] and undo with [ctrl-z]. Now the
formerly selected text can be pasted to third party windows. Copy with [ctrl-c]
does not do the trick.

Bug#365999: xserver-xorg: incorrect postinst warning

2006-05-04 Thread Gabor Gombas
Package: xserver-xorg

Severity: minor

Hi,

Upgrading xserver-xorg produced the following message:

Setting up xserver-xorg (7.0.16) ...
xserver-xorg postinst warning: /etc/X11/xorg.conf has been customized, but we
need to make
updates. Backing up your config to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.20060504121741. If we
screw something up,

But

# diff -u /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.20060504121741

So either

- there was no need to update anything, therefore no message should have
  been printed, or
- updating xorg.conf have failed for some reason that is not displayed.

Bug#311358: kernel: Should be marked critical, as it freezes my system when running X

2006-05-04 Thread Martin Hansen
From: Jonas Smedegaard [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
The severity tagging relates to the distribution as a whole,
not to the individual user of a package.
cut
Please read the clarifications of the severities here:
 http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities
Sorry, but I do not understand then. it says makes unrelated software on the
system (or the whole system) break. that of course depends on what You mean by
break, when this error make almost any X-program freeze. I understand this as
being broken?

But at least You must agree that the definition for important is there a bug
which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without rendering it
completely unusable to everyone
It has a Major effect on usability, as it freezes the X-server. And makes
terminal unstable and slow when in effect.

Please let me know if I can provide more/better info to resolve the bug.

Specifying the ip address to bind in ~/.rtorrent.rc does work

Bug#366002: aiccu: Lack of AMD64 package

Bug#365730: additional info

2006-05-04 Thread Toni L. Harbaugh-Blackford [Contr]

This bug is still present in the daily image from 5/3/06 (closed bug 865859)

The crash occurs even when there is no usb device present. The console log
of an attempt to install the image to the same Xserve G5 box from an external
firewire drive ended in the following:

Note that this installation attempt was identical to that in Bug#365844.
except that a different Xserve G5 box was used. However, the two Xserves
are the same model, purchased at the same time and exist as part of the
same Xserve cluster.

The only difference between the two machines is that the USB ports in this
one have been used, whereas the USB ports in the box from Bug#365844 have
never been touched.

Note also that this box and all it's ports work fine under Mac OS X

Comparing the console log of Bug#365844 shows a difference that
seems odd. In Bug#365844, the detection of the pmu is represented
with 'via-pmu: Server Mode is enabled'. The box on which the install
crashes instead shows 'via-pmu: Server Mode is disabled'. There
also differences in the reported size of nvram, although this may
be normal.

Clearly there is something different about the two boxes, despite
the fact that they *should* be identical.

Bug#362800: debian-installer: cd-rom installer requires online repository

2006-05-04 Thread Renato S. Yamane
Hi,
Frans Pop say that this bug is done in images after 15/04/2006, but I burn
the 3 *DVDs* of Debian Etch (17/04/2006) and I found the same problem: The
installer work ONLY with internet conection (online repository is necessary!)
I try use workarround available in ERRATA, but don't work in version of day
17/04/2006 (images DVD)... the oprion Ignore don't appear!
This bug is done in *DVD* images of Debian Etch?
I say taht because Debian Etch don't up my network card (Marvell Yukon) and I
my internet conection is by network, so I thing that 11Gb available in 3 DVD
is enough :-)
Thanks,
Renato S. Yamane

Bug#329863: [PATCH] Bug#329863: w3m: no working equivalent to lynx's -pseudo_inlines

 No matter what I do, e.g., -o ignore_null_img_alt=1, I cannot find an
 option to make this
   PIMG src=images/default_02.jpg/P
 not show up as
 [default_02]
when viewing or with -dump. There is no way to get rid of it.
I don't want to see it in certain -dump's.

In lynx all I need to do is
 $ lynx -dump -pseudo_inlines file.html

Hi,

the attached patch adds a option pseudo_inlines (Display pseudo-ALTs for inline
images with no
ALT or TITLE string) so
w3m -o pseudo_inlines=0
works like
lynx -pseudo_inlines

Add option pseudo_inlines (Display pseudo-ALTs for inline images with no
ALT or TITLE string) so
w3m -o pseudo_inlines=0
works like
lynx -pseudo_inlines
If there is no ALT tag or it is and ignore_null_img_alt=1 then use TITLE
instead.

Francesco, do you change the window between the plots?

Yes. Sorry, I forgot to mention.
