In contrast to what it says, the above also affects direct rendering. However I'm going to try applying the patch and recompliling, so I should have more info later today. Bug#368816: pine: should have another binary package which have no debian patch
--- Santiago Vila [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The goal of Debian is to produce the best *free* OS possible, and definitely not to accept silly no-modification license clauses so that we can distribute binaries in non-free. Yes, although in non-free, we can only distribute the non-modified pine binary. The modified binary is not allowed by the license. There are a few reasons why a non-modified pine is not a good idea: *) We would not be able to fix any bugs in it, as we would be unable to modify it at all. My purposed solution is to distribute another non-modified pine as a distinct sub-package name. pine : the modified pine pine-orig : the non-modified pine So, we can still fix bugs in the package named pine, and leave the non-modified binary version in pine-orig for any users who don't want to compile the src themselves. *) It would hide the real pine even more. Heh, what is hidden? It will obviously has two distinct package name. *) The UW already distributes a debian package for pine. The *real* problem here is the license of pine, and for that you should complain to the University of Washington, not to us. The way pine is distributed in the debian ftp servers is not a secret, it's documented in the Debian FAQ. Hmm, sorry for that I haven't tried reading debian FAQ yet. Bug#369759: sendfax: sendfax: wrong kill time computation
Package: hylafax-client Version: 1:4.2.1 Severity: normal hi, I think sendfax(1) fails to correctly compute the max job kill time, i.e. the opt passed by -k. Namely, while the default seems ok usually, it isn't when destination is a long list. In such case, sendfax(1) seems to pretend the whole list should complete in such time frame (normally valid for just a single job). Bug#369760: Video problems installing etch on oldworld PowerPC Mac (beige G3)
Package: debian-installer Severity: Important I've been trying to test install the etch daily netinst CD on an oldworld Mac (beige G3) and I can't get off first base because I can't get the video to co-operate. I'm using the BootX bootloader under MacOS-9.2.2 Before I begin describing my problems, let me state that I was able to install sarge using just about any of the available combinations of video setting in BootX (Force video settings checkbox on or off, No video driver checkbox on or off, and any one of three settings for More kernel arguments: -- video=ofonly, , and video=atyfb:vmode:17,cmode:8) (Does anybody know what the two video checkboxes translate into in terms of kernel arguments???) The problem is that, no matter what I set for video options in BootX, using the debian-testing-powerpc-netinst.iso CD image from http://cdimage.debian.org/daily-builds/arch-latest/powerpc/iso_cd/ I get unreadable stuff on the screen during the part that should be kernel messages and evenutally it hangs. I never get to the language chooser screen at all. In some cases I get tiny unreadable green text which is duplicated between the left and right halves of the screen, followed by readable characters in white saying: Preparing boot params... Preparing BAT... pmac_init(): exit id mach(): done MMU: enter MMU: hw init hash: enter hash: find piece hash: done MMU: mapin MMU: setio MMU: exit then it hangs. In other cases (in particular with none of the BootX video checkboxes set and with kernel args set to video=ofonly) I get a seemingly random collection of white dots on a black screen (nothing recognizable as potential kernel messages) and it hangs. Is the ATI video driver compiled into the kernel on this CD? Any help will be appreciated... Thanks! Rick PS: Below is the output of lspci from this machine with sarge on it... Bug#367081: sa-exim: not working with latest spamassassin package
From: Sander Smeenk [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't really know what might cause this all. Did you change something in your spamassassin/local.cf? Or maybe made changes to sa-exim.conf? Nothing in the spamassassin file was changed, and no recent changes to sa-exim conf. Or with purging, did you also remove all the config files? Yep. I've got past the problem now, though I can't say I've figured out what was really wrong with it. With the new version of spamassassin (I assume) the spamd daemon became disabled, and reenabling it has fixed my problem. However the original problem can't have been that simple, because I originally saw no connection refused messages in syslog from spamc, but instead I saw a report of the spam status of each incoming message. Which was pretty confusing since it made everything look like it was working perfectly. Anyway, some combination of purging, reinstalling, and playing with config files has solved the problem. The only thing I would say is the unknown error message in SA could be a bit better, after looking at the code and turning up the debug I could see that unknown error meant more specifically that no X-Spam-Status header was in what came back from spamc. Also, it would be nice if spamc could give some feedback as to the problem it had, perhaps a header to indicate why it didn't actually do anything with the message, but that's obviously an issue for the developers of that, not you. You are welcome to close this bug, I haven't myself just incase you do want to use it improve the error messages to aid debugging. The attached patch fixes this, and gives me a minimally-usable package on amd64. there is a discussion about a few other outstanding issues on the xcircuit-dev [1] list, lets see what comes up. Bug#295526: libpam-unix2 only works as root
Hello, After a long time I just revisited my bug report for libpam-unix2 and the following discussion. If you'd like to help, please run the changes by the current PAM policy maintainer Sam Hartman [EMAIL PROTECTED], and also upstream, Thorsten Kukuk [EMAIL PROTECTED] - I'm curious if SuSE has this bug with pam_unix2 also and if they solved it differently? I just sent the changes to Sam Hartman _ I hope that he is still the PAM policy maintainer. SuSE does not have this problem with pam_unix2 as all mentioned screensaver programs (with exception of xscreensaver) are setuid root. For xscreensaver, setuid root does not help, so SuSE uses a hack so that xscreensaver calls the helper binary unix2_chkpwd. In Debian, the screensaver programs are not setuid root, because the normal authentication module pam_unix uses a helper binary unix_chkpwd that is setuid root. Bug#369775: amule: patches 01 and 02 are bogus, and ineffective for that matter
Package: amule Version: 2.1.1-3 Hello, the current amule source package ships two patches to modify how the configure process detects the version of the installed Crypto++ library. There are two issues with these patches: First, 01cryptostyle-acinclude is bogus, the change it applies to the sed regex does not work. See, running this in a unstable system: # Original version % grep Reference Manual /usr/include/crypto++/cryptlib.h | sed -e's#.*\s\(\([0-9]\+\.\?\)\+\)\s.*#\1#g' 5.2.1 # New version % grep Reference Manual /usr$crypto_prefix/include/crypto++/cryptlib.h | sed 's/[[^0-9]]*\([[0-9]][[0-9.]]*\).*$/\1/' /*! \mainpage Crypto++ Library 5.2.1 Reference Manual Secondly, neither of 01cryptostyle-acinclude or 02cryptostyle-configurein produce any effect on the package configure process, since they patch acinclude.m4 and configure.in, but the autotools have not been rerun so that these changes get included into the executed ./configure file. I recommend that these two patches get removed from the source package. Cheers, -- Adeodato Simó dato at net.com.org.es Debian Developer adeodato at debian.org Listening to: Vitalic - Repair Machines

Bug#369265: maybe not RC?
I'm not sure if this bug is really RC. Please specify in more details what you mean by saying the installation now fails. What is the error message. Does the make-fai-nfsroot call fail or the installation itself? A solution may be to use the -cf and -sf (man dhclient3) flags for specifying different files instead of using dpkg-divert. -- regards Thomas -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Once the host is determined to be a domain name, why not just attempting to resolve it using the standard library calls instead? Thanks for the report. The error message is for reverse-resolution, so it doesn't matter that you specified an IP. Do the standard library calls find DNS servers for you? If so, how? Sorry, I don't know. However, the big problem here is inability to use nmap when /etc/resolv.conf is broken. When this happens, instead of aborting, I think it should just disable whatever functionality is associated with reverse-resolution. -- Robert Millan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#332760: recoverjpeg: memory consumption is too high
Roberto, you can fix the maximum read size with the -r parameter on the command line. By default, recoverjpeg uses 128M of memory. Try to run it with -r 32M to use 32M of RAM. recoverjpeg doesn't leak memory. It does only one single malloc() in main(), not in a loop, and no function is ever called recursively. Using mmap() as you suggest is not an option as it would not work on some BSD systems which do not allow to mmap() a block device. On GNU/Linux systems, there was no performance gain in using a mmap()ed file anyway as the data is only read() once and then buffered internally (in the buffer configurable with -r as discussed above). Sam PS/ Cyril, would you be kind enough to send me a copy of bug reports you receive for recoverjpeg? I stumbled on this one by chance only. -- Samuel Tardieu -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- http://www.rfc1149.net/

Could you try producing a minimalist file which is still a playable MP3 but exposes the problem? The problem only appears when the ID3v1 tag at the end of the file is present. Even at head -c 10k it is recognized (there isn't any tag at the beginning of the file anyway). It even plays when I only strip the last byte of the file with the v1 tag, but then quodlibet doesn't display the ID3 information, of course. I should also make clear that this bug only appears when I upgrade libgstreamer0.10-0 to 0.10.6, so it's probably not a bug in gstreamer0.10-plugins-base. Perhaps you can point at the tool which produced the file and tell me how to reproduce instead? I created the failing files in 2000 with a combination of cdparanoia and gogo. Bug#369781: apt: fails to install packages from cdrom in presence of pre-depends
Package: apt Version: 0.6.43.3 Severity: normal Hello, Yesterday, I tried to install ilisp and got (approximately) the error: could not configure pre-depends, possible dependency cycle There are no dependency cycles, but from what was happening when I installed it by hand, I deduce that the problem was that I was installing from a cdrom, and the situation was as follows: - ilisp pre-depends: common-lisp-controller - common-lisp-controller depends: something I don't remember, let's say X - ilisp and X are on CD1 - common-lisp-controller is on CD2 The problem is that apt asked for CD1 first (it's logical, because common-lisp-controller was not installable at that time), and by the way tried to install ilisp, which needs common-lisp-controller configured, but that couldn't be because CD2 hadn't been inserted. Bug#332760: recoverjpeg: memory consumption is too high
Samuel Tardieu wrote: you can fix the maximum read size with the -r parameter on the command line. What about using mmap() as default and falling back to read() on systems or devices where mmap() is no available? Prueba el correo Terra ( http://www.terra.es/correo ); Seguro, rápido, fiable.

Bug#367125: knfsd / bad inode number on ext3
Hello, thanks for your info. That means it is a bug in ext3. It seems to ignore the errors=continue mount option, although according to the manpage it should support all the options that ext2 does.
