Bug#372724: Acknowledgement (dbus-daemon sessions are launched and never exit)
reassign 372724 liferea thanks, On Sun, Jun 11, 2006 at 03:49:59AM -0700, Joshua Rodman wrote: The specific culprit has been identified. liferea's launch script is firing off 'dbus-launch', every time it is run. Twice. I'll leave it up to the dbus experts to decide if dbus could be configured to limit the mortality of the dbus-daemons launched in this fashion. The point of the dbus-launch is that it launches one bugs for the session. On debian this is done as soon as you login to X (when you have dbus installed).. There is no reason for liferea to launch it's own. Especially since it works fine when there is no session bus available (It just throws an error about not beging able to contact the bus on stderr) Even worse, it breaks the assumption that all applications in one session are on one bus and breaks some functionality. You can get a better picture of memory *specific* to a process with other fields from ps output, but the easiest is to look at memory reported as free by errr free. In my case, I saw the second gweather applet freeing 2368 kB of memory when I removed it. This is still a lot, and I don't think this memory is used by the weather applet itself, I think it's mostly destinated at the libraries it uses and which need some buffers to store application data. On a related subject, I've read about a patch floating around that permits sharing of the same process to run multiple applets (and effectively saving this memory time the number of applets). I think Ubuntu uses it. Cheers, -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#72140: Setting up libraries too slow
On Sun, Sep 24, 2000 at 02:24:43PM +0200, Torsten Landschoff wrote: On Sat, Sep 23, 2000 at 01:54:17PM -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] /usr/bin/gkrellm /usr/bin/gkrellm: error in loading shared libraries: libXi.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Right, forgot about this. The dynamic linker does not actually use /etc/ld.so.conf but only /etc/ld.so.cache. So if you don't have the lib in the system path it may well be not found. I think setting one envoromnment variable is slightly faster than running ldconfig :) Yep, but this is more error prone. You can easily forget to do that since you need to do it in all postinst which depend on that library... Contrary ldconfig needs to be run in the lib installation script. PS. Anyone know what other distro's (redhat?) do? Installing rpm's seems faster than .deb's, but I dont know if that has anything to do with this issue. I think they don't call ldconfig. Summary: Perhaps we should a) remove that ldconfig call from the library postinsts b) make dpkg call ldconfig if any of /usr/lib, /lib or the dirs in /etc/ld.so.conf has been touched since starting dpkg c) demand that postinst which call programs with libs outside /lib and /usr/lib sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH How about: a) remove the ldocnfig call from the library postinsts b) make dpkg set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH if its installing a library This would be a global setting that every program inherits, and would not require each library to modify its postinst, and set variables.. c) call ldconfig at the end of the install/upgrade This bug is still here, as bad as ever, after 6 years. ldconfig is still dog slow. I am using an ext3 fs, and ldconfig and hence dpkg is not quicker the second time around -- one suspects ldconfig is trying to read so much cruft that any information has been long purged out of the filesystem cache before ldconfig is invoked the second time. However, for the past 12 months, I have been symlinking /sbin/ldconfig to /bin/true after moving ldconfig to ldconfig.real, with much success. No crashes so far, no missing libraries, only the occasional slowness as apt replaces libc6 and the /sbin/ldconfig program gets restored. I move it back out of the way when I notice that apt is taking so long, and all is fine. Occasionally, if I feel like it, I manually run /sbin/ldconfig.real, but I notice no difference whether the cache is updated or not. I only notice it when it is being run during an package uprade or installation and it takes 3 minutes per invocation, which tells me the cache is largely useless. I think the ldconfig calls should be removed from all packages, after changing policy. It seriously takes 10 times longer to update my system if those useless calls are made. If you really need to, make a log in each postinst that *thinks* it needs ldconfig, and if one package thought it needed it, run it at the end just before dpkg exits. Don't just blindly run it everytime dpkg is invoked, because I may well have installed just one package rather than upgrading the system, and it may well have not required ldconfig. Perhaps, instead of changing policy, a quick fix: You don't need to implement triggers properly -- you could just write something that logs that ldconfig needs to be called later, call it /usr/lib/dpkg/ldconfig, prepend /usr/lib/dpkg: to $PATH for everything dpkg spawns, and the new file gets invoked in preferance to /sbin/ldconfig. -- TimC -- http://http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/staff/tconnors/ Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a function. Bug#374945: ldconfig: please add an argument to specify files to update
Package: libc6 Version: 2.3.6-15 Severity: normal Please see debian bug 72140 for background info, and in particular, this message: --- From: Henrique M Holschuh [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#72140: Setting up libraries too slow Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 10:40:20 -0300 On Thu, 21 Sep 2000, Nicols Lichtmaier wrote: Couldn't ldconfig be enhanced to act only on command-line given libraries? The only point in running ldconfig today is to update the symlinks, which could also be done by a few lns in if statements. I think there should be an update-lib-symlinks(8) that handles installation and removal of libraries. What about ld.so's cache? Isn't ldconfig the one responsible to keep that thing up-to-date? One should profile ldconfig and see exactly what takes so much time. Building the symlink trees? Reading the directory tree (ext2 is a [EMAIL PROTECTED] for directories with many files)? Reading the information for the cache file? Something else? I don't see the point of building a strategy to try to minimize a problem which isn't determined exactly. --- ldconfig is called in very large amount of package dpkg postinst scripts. These take many minutes to run per package on older systems, and a system upgrade is painfully slow unless one moves /sbin/ldconfig out of the way (since it appears completely unnecessary in all usage I have encountered to date) and symlink to /bin/true. It really shouldn't be taking that long, and that thread mentions adding an argument to ldconfig to get it to only update the files in question, rather than updating the symlinks and cache for *everything* that appears in all the lib directories. In the case of the cache, you don't need to look at the existance and location of every library on the sytem, just assume they are correct from the entries already in the cache -- only add and modify those from the arguments supplied. Since the dpkg and necessary policy changes don't look like they are going to happen any time soon (I've been eagerly awaiting a proper solution to this bug for 6 years), could the libc maintainers think about adding this argument to ldconfig? Somehow my /dev/null in the static /dev had been replaced with a file, and hence the errors. Anyway, I am closing the bug, since yaird works perfectly as it is expected to :) Sorry for the 'spam' ;) Thanks for following up on this. No, it really does not make sense for yaird to use udev: The very approach of yaird is to be smart at ramdisk build time, and exact at runtime - which is more or less the opposite of initramfs-tools+udev. Bug#72140: Setting up libraries too slow
#include hallo.h * Tim Connors [Thu, Jun 22 2006, 06:03:41PM]: On Sun, Sep 24, 2000 at 02:24:43PM +0200, Torsten Landschoff wrote: On Sat, Sep 23, 2000 at 01:54:17PM -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] /usr/bin/gkrellm /usr/bin/gkrellm: error in loading shared libraries: libXi.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Right, forgot about this. I am using an ext3 fs, and ldconfig and Yed, ldconfig calls suck. I noticed that on a machine with low memory (less than 256MB), too many programs do too much things in postinst, so the VFS cache seems to become useless and the contents is exchanged all the time. Please read http://people.debian.org/~terpstra/message/20060312.125613.c03ce487.en.html and following. I stopped working on a proof-of-concpet after writting the base specs (see wiki link there) because of not having enough spare time and the requirement of dpkg modification (for LD_LIBRARY_PATH export/preset). If you wish to take it over, let us know and go ahead. *g*... yes, AFAICS only the programs working with dlopen and non-standard paths do not cope with not having the up-to-date ld.so.cache. We could forbid the usage of such programs in the postinst via policy, make dpkg prepend a NOOP-symlink for ldconfig in the $PATH and everything should be fine RSN. That was the quick fix I suggested, the better solution is the dpkg-hook idea. Eduard. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#374956: Printer not connected
Package: cupsys Version: 1.2.1-2 Ever since the latest upgrade some kind of crash seems to occur. The behaviour is very strange. When I switch on the computer and try to print I get some processes under top (gutenprint, rastertoprint, gs) that don't go away and the cups web interface says printer not connected, retry in 30 seconds. The current workaround for this is to delete the printer in the web interface and reinstall it. Then the printer works for that session. This has to be repeated after every reboot. I use the HP Laserjet 4 and the appropriate driver. The workaround suggests that this is in fact a cupsys problem. Thx for reading, Malte -- Echte DSL-Flatrate dauerhaft für 0,- Euro*! Bug#374967: samba: XP client unable to access files with a question mark in the name
Package: samba Version: 3.0.22-1 Severity: important This may be related to the previously reported quotation mark bug (Debian bug #333778), but I'm not sure. Anyway, I have a file named: --- 02-you know what you are?.flac which appears as: --- 0J1HP7~2 with the default mangle names = yes. I can copy it to the local machine, so with the default settings, the file is in fact accessible (although Winamp doesn't like it much admittedly). With mangle names = no, the file name shows up correctly, but the file cannot be copied to the local machine giving an error of: --- Cannot copy 02-you know what you are?: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. under Windows XP Professional. So really, it's basically exactly the same bug as the quotation bug. But the problem is, by disabling name mangling, the file becomes inaccessible, or at least does in this situation for me. I've got a number of other files with question marks in the their names which exhibit the same problem. It looks like upstream really should look into this probably and I'd be interested if the people experiencing the quotation mark bug were able to access the unmangled name version of the file or not. Strangely, I can right click on the file and view its properties from Windows, but any attempt to copy it results in the aforementioned message and a rename attempt gave me: --- Cannot rename file: Select only one file to rename, or use MS-DOS wildcards (for example, *.txt) to rename a group of files with similar names. Winamp similarly fails trying to access the file, so it appears as if only the basic stat information is available to the client. I did not try changing my locale, so I cannot say whether this would help. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (700, 'testing'), (600, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16.18 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages samba depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.1 Debian configuration management sy ii libacl1 2.2.37-1 Access control list shared library ii libattr1 2.4.32-1 Extended attribute shared library ii libc6 2.3.6-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcomerr21.39-1 common error description library ii libcupsys21.2.1-2Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii libkrb53 1.4.3-7MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libldap2 2.1.30-13 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpam-modules0.79-3.1 Pluggable Authentication Modules f ii libpam-runtime0.79-3.1 Runtime support for the PAM librar ii libpam0g 0.79-3.1 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpopt0 1.10-2 lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii logrotate 3.7.1-3Log rotation utility ii lsb-base 3.1-10 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii netbase 4.25 Basic TCP/IP networking system ii samba-common 3.0.22-1 Samba common files used by both th Versions of packages samba recommends: pn smbldap-tools none (no description available) -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Maybe you can ask Mika Prokop about what this option actually does. Ccing him on this issue. noautoconfig disables a check while booting in userland at the grml system. What I'm doing there is: * check for existence of /dev/fd0; if it exits: * run 'if dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/null bs=512 count=1', if successful: * run blkid to identify devices with a specific label (GRMLCFG) noautoconfig disables this check at all. Booting grml on a system with a fd-connector but no fd present at all provides the following syslog entry: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0 which I could also find in #373594. Marc, does the same behaviour (hanging for ~2 min) occur on harddisk installation or is it just at d-i? IMHO this looks like an userland application is trying to access /dev/fd0 several times (as the 'end_request: I/O error...' is present several times). This usually happens when scanning for disks/partitions/... Might this be the case, Frans? Bug#374891: initramfs-tools: activate resume volume group

Have you already fixed lilo support on top of my patch or do you want an updated patch? Regards, David yes fixed in latest repo. currently i have some hand binded as mentors.debian.net does not parse the Uploaders control field, so my uploaded packages land nowhere. hope that gets resolved soon. also the bzr story leads me to dump that playground and switch soon to git, than latest repo should get available again. regards -- maks
