Bug#374936: dbus: ~/.xsession-errors

2006-06-22 Thread Christoph Thomas
Package: dbus
Version: 0.62-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

I am not shure which package causes the problem.
I got some error in my ~/.xsession-errors about
${prefix}/share/dbus-1/services does not exist (the file is
overwritten yust now, hope my memory is correct) and the X-Session
failed to start.

it can be solved by changing /etc/dbus-1/session.conf (owned by dbus)
form servicedir${prefix}/share/dbus-1/services/servicedir
to servicedir/usr/share/dbus-1/services/servicedir

Bye, Christoph

Huh, your /etc/dbus-1/system.d directory is gone ? Did you move it to some
other place maybe ? I just can't imaging that the package system would cause
this..

The point of the dbus-launch is that it launches one bugs for the session. On
debian this is done as soon as you login to X (when you have dbus installed)..
There is no reason for liferea to launch it's own. Especially since it works
fine when there is no session bus available (It just throws an error about not
beging able to contact the bus on stderr)

Even worse, it breaks the assumption that all applications in one session are
on one bus and breaks some functionality.

Bug#374939: kdelibs-data: mimelnk/application/x-mscabinet.desktop file needed

Package: kdelibs-data
Version: 4:3.5.3-1
Severity: wishlist

Cabextract is getting Konqueror servicemenu entries and needs
a mimetype definition for Microsoft Cabinet archives[1].

This appears to be the minimum required:

Comment=Microsoft Cabinet Archive
Hidden=false
MimeType=application/x-mscabinet
Patterns=*.cab;*.CAB

Subject: Re: cabextract enhances KDE?

 The first file, */share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/cabextract.desktop,
 (* = $HOME/.kde | /usr) defines functions which appear in the Actions
 submenu of the context menu.

Ok. I can add that to the cabextract package.

 $ dpkg -S x-msdos-program.desktop
 kdelibs-data: /usr/share/mimelnk/application/x-msdos-program.desktop

 Should kdelibs-data also provide x-mscabinet.desktop?

Yes, that should not be in the cabextract package. You want the
mime type to be defined even if cabextract is not installed, and the
action to be available only if it is, so the first file should be
included in the cabextract package, and the second packaged with
kdelibs-data.

Bug#374938: kernel-package: please support cross-compiling third-party modules

2006-06-22 Thread Marcus Better
Package: kernel-package
Version: 10.049
Severity: wishlist

The --cross-compile option works for cross-compiling the kernel, but
doesn't seem to have any effect on modules selected by
--added-modules. I can cross-compile the modules with the
dpkg-buildpackage wrapper from dpkg-cross, but it would be convenient
if it could be done directly by make-kpkg.

Perhaps make-kpkg could do something similar to the dpkg-buildpackage
wrapper when cross-compiling?

Once things have stabilized a bit, I need to write some documentation on

This will probably have to wait until I've fixed #373973 since it would

Bug#374914: gweather: using over 20MB of resident memory; possible memory leak?

2006-06-22 Thread Loïc Minier
Hi,

On Thu, Jun 22, 2006, Calum Mackay wrote:

which seems insane. I'm only monitoring two weather stations.

 One station here:

lool 23058 1 0 13437 11512 0 Jun17 ?00:00:20

This url provides some information on how to look at the RSS:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-list/1999-April/msg02337.html
in short: it includes the weight of shared memory from e.g. shared
 libraries.

gweather-applet-2 depends on 15 shared libraries, which in turn depend
on other shared libraries, etc., which sum up to 71 libraries.

You can get a better picture of memory *specific* to a process with
other fields from ps output, but the easiest is to look at memory
reported as free by errr free. In my case, I saw the second gweather
applet freeing 2368 kB of memory when I removed it.

This is still a lot, and I don't think this memory is used by the
weather applet itself, I think it's mostly destinated at the libraries
it uses and which need some buffers to store application data.

On a related subject, I've read about a patch floating around that
permits sharing of the same process to run multiple applets (and
effectively saving this memory time the number of applets). I think
 Ubuntu uses it.

Confirmed. If I do a new install of unstable, the mail spool dir is clean.

So, this is probably because there were some differences in the patch
we temporarily applied in Debian to cover the security issue
supposedly fixed by 4.0.15-10 and the one that was really applied by
Tomasz in 4.0.16.

Hence, closing the bug with Version: 4.0.16-1 seems fair.

Indeed.

Jonas, is it ok if I create a new directory in the cryptsetup SVN repo for

Gah, I should read emails until the end (or not reply so late).

Run this command via sudo and it succeeds, even though I think I have
 the permissions setup correctly:

Hi!

I doubt that there is much sense for the modules without the according
linux-image package. It would be quite pleasing if you change the
Recommends on them to a Depends, thus making the package only move to
testing when the linux-image package moves over, too.

 Thanks in advance,

Right, forgot about this. The dynamic linker does not actually use
/etc/ld.so.conf but only /etc/ld.so.cache. So if you don't have the lib
in the system path it may well be not found.

I think setting one envoromnment variable is slightly faster than running
   ldconfig :)

Yep, but this is more error prone. You can easily forget to do that since
you need to do it in all postinst which depend on that library...

Contrary ldconfig needs to be run in the lib installation script.

PS. Anyone know what other distro's (redhat?) do? Installing rpm's seems
faster than .deb's, but I dont know if that has anything to do with this
   issue.

I think they don't call ldconfig.

  Summary: Perhaps we should

  a) remove that ldconfig call from the library postinsts
  b) make dpkg call ldconfig if any of /usr/lib, /lib or the dirs in
/etc/ld.so.conf has been touched since starting dpkg
  c) demand that postinst which call programs with libs outside
 /lib and /usr/lib sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH

 How about:

 a) remove the ldocnfig call from the library postinsts
 b) make dpkg set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH if its installing a library
This would be a global setting that every program inherits, and would
 not
require each library to modify its postinst, and set variables..
 c) call ldconfig at the end of the install/upgrade

This bug is still here, as bad as ever, after 6 years.

ldconfig is still dog slow. I am using an ext3 fs, and ldconfig and
hence dpkg is not quicker the second time around -- one suspects ldconfig
is trying to read so much cruft that any information has been long purged
out of the filesystem cache before ldconfig is invoked the second time.

However, for the past 12 months, I have been symlinking /sbin/ldconfig to
/bin/true after moving ldconfig to ldconfig.real, with much success. No
crashes so far, no missing libraries, only the occasional slowness as apt
replaces libc6 and the /sbin/ldconfig program gets restored. I move it
back out of the way when I notice that apt is taking so long, and all is
fine.

Occasionally, if I feel like it, I manually run /sbin/ldconfig.real, but
I notice no difference whether the cache is updated or not. I only notice
it when it is being run during an package uprade or installation and it
takes 3 minutes per invocation, which tells me the cache is largely
useless.

I think the ldconfig calls should be removed from all packages, after
changing policy. It seriously takes 10 times longer to update my system
if those useless calls are made. If you really need to, make a log in
each postinst that *thinks* it needs ldconfig, and if one package thought
it needed it, run it at the end just before dpkg exits. Don't just
blindly run it everytime dpkg is invoked, because I may well have
installed just one package rather than upgrading the system, and it may
well have not required ldconfig.

Perhaps, instead of changing policy, a quick fix: You don't need to
implement triggers properly -- you could just write something that logs
that ldconfig needs to be called later, call it /usr/lib/dpkg/ldconfig,
prepend /usr/lib/dpkg: to $PATH for everything dpkg spawns, and the new
file gets invoked in preferance to /sbin/ldconfig.

The only point in running ldconfig today is to update the symlinks, which
could also be done by a few lns in if statements. I think there should
be an update-lib-symlinks(8) that handles installation and removal of
  libraries.

What about ld.so's cache? Isn't ldconfig the one responsible to keep that
 thing up-to-date?

One should profile ldconfig and see exactly what takes so much time.
Building the symlink trees? Reading the directory tree (ext2 is a [EMAIL
 PROTECTED] for
directories with many files)? Reading the information for the cache file?
Something else? I don't see the point of building a strategy to try to
minimize a problem which isn't determined exactly.
---

ldconfig is called in very large amount of package dpkg postinst
scripts. These take many minutes to run per package on older systems,
and a system upgrade is painfully slow unless one moves /sbin/ldconfig
out of the way (since it appears completely unnecessary in all usage I
have encountered to date) and symlink to /bin/true. It really
shouldn't be taking that long, and that thread mentions adding an
argument to ldconfig to get it to only update the files in question,
rather than updating the symlinks and cache for *everything* that
appears in all the lib directories. In the case of the cache, you
don't need to look at the existance and location of every library on
the sytem, just assume they are correct from the entries already in
the cache -- only add and modify those from the arguments supplied.

Since the dpkg and necessary policy changes don't look like they are
going to happen any time soon (I've been eagerly awaiting a proper
solution to this bug for 6 years), could the libc maintainers think
about adding this argument to ldconfig?

Thanks.

Bug#374913: zsh: Completion should handle combining accents equivalents

Samuel Thibault, le Thu 22 Jun 2006 03:20:44 +0200, a écrit :
If I create a directory named héhé (e with combining acute accent),
and then try to complete hé into it (here é is the precombined form),
libreadline does not take care that é (e with combining acute accent) is
equivalent to é (the precombined e with acute accent character).

libreadline should use some unicode normal form on completion.

I meant zsh of course...

Bug#369965: [Yaird-devel] Bug#369965: Fixed.

Well, very sorry, it was not a yaird problem at all. Somehow my
/dev/null in the static /dev had been replaced with a file, and hence
the errors. The problem did not occur with the initrd created by

be feasible for yaird ? Anyway, I am closing the bug, since yaird
works perfectly as it is expected to :) Sorry for the 'spam' ;)

Thanks for following up on this.

No, it really does not make sense for yaird to use udev: The very
approach of yaird is to be smart at ramdisk build time, and exact at
runtime - which is more or less the opposite of initramfs-tools+udev.

If I somehow misunderstood your suggestion, or you have other ideas for
possible improvements of yeaird, please file wishlist bugs about them
(instead of discussing them in this - now closed - bugreport).

Right, forgot about this. The dynamic linker does not actually use
/etc/ld.so.conf but only /etc/ld.so.cache. So if you don't have the lib
in the system path it may well be not found.

I think setting one envoromnment variable is slightly faster than
running
ldconfig :)

Yep, but this is more error prone. You can easily forget to do that since
you need to do it in all postinst which depend on that library...

Contrary ldconfig needs to be run in the lib installation script.

PS. Anyone know what other distro's (redhat?) do? Installing rpm's
seems
faster than .deb's, but I dont know if that has anything to do with this

Yed, ldconfig calls suck. I noticed that on a machine with low memory
(less than 256MB), too many programs do too much things in postinst, so
the VFS cache seems to become useless and the contents is exchanged all
the time.

Please read
http://people.debian.org/~terpstra/message/20060312.125613.c03ce487.en.html
and following. I stopped working on a proof-of-concpet after writting
the base specs (see wiki link there) because of not having enough spare
time and the requirement of dpkg modification (for LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export/preset).

If you wish to take it over, let us know and go ahead.

I move it
back out of the way when I notice that apt is taking so long, and all is
 fine.

*g*... yes, AFAICS only the programs working with dlopen and
non-standard paths do not cope with not having the up-to-date
ld.so.cache. We could forbid the usage of such programs in the postinst
via policy, make dpkg prepend a NOOP-symlink for ldconfig in the $PATH
and everything should be fine RSN.

That was the quick fix I suggested, the better solution is the
dpkg-hook idea.

Eduard.

Confirmed. If I do a new install of unstable, the mail spool dir is clean.

So, this is probably because there were some differences in the patch
we temporarily applied in Debian to cover the security issue
supposedly fixed by 4.0.15-10 and the one that was really applied by

Hence, closing the bug with Version: 4.0.16-1 seems fair.

Bug#374961: ipodder: Lots of problems

2006-06-22 Thread John Goerzen
Package: ipodder
Version: 2.1.9-5
Severity: important

This application is very buggy in many ways.

When switching tabs, the toolbar sometimes doesn't switch.

Many toolbar buttons are non-functional. The X button in the downloads
tab does nothing. Right-clicking and selecting options usually does
nothing.

The program randomly crashes after adding new podcasts.

It spews messages on the console about not being able to find the module
named iPodder.

in all, why do we still have this in Debian? Upstream is now called
Juice Receiver and is at www.sf.net/projects/juicereceiver.

I would hope that all this has been fixed upstream.

Bug#374956: Printer not connected

2006-06-22 Thread smsms
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.1-2

Ever since the latest upgrade some kind of crash seems to occur. The behaviour
is very strange. When I switch on the computer and try to print I get some
processes under top (gutenprint, rastertoprint, gs) that don't go away and the
cups web interface says printer not connected, retry in 30 seconds.

The current workaround for this is to delete the printer in the web interface
and reinstall it. Then the printer works for that session. This has to be
repeated after every reboot. I use the HP Laserjet 4 and the appropriate driver.

The workaround suggests that this is in fact a cupsys problem.

Thx for reading,

Malte

Bug#374957: cannot handle UTF-8-encoded embedded stylesheets

I would suggest fixing this by explicitly declaring the content

Hi PHP maintainers,
we are seeing segmentation faults on webservers running a PHP4
application (horde/imp clone). They are reproducible after about
two hours of server uptime und serving some 50,000 requests and
appear only under high load. We let apache dump core, the backtrace
is identical for each core file so we can assume that we are observing
only one single kind of failure. We rebuilt libapache2-mod-php4 with
full debugging symbols (CFLAGS += -ggdb) to obtain the attached
backtrace. Please be aware that packages listed below have custom

Bug#374962: ldapvi: Fails removing trailing spaces from attributes

2006-06-22 Thread Javier Barroso
Package: ldapvi
Version: 1.5-1
Severity: important

Try:

add a space to givenName attribute of a object, ldapvi generate:
changetype: modify
delete: givenName
givenName: Javier
-
add: givenName
givenName: Javier

With last givenName with a space trail and it will run fine

Now I try to invoke ldapvi again, and remove this trailing space, ldapvi
generate:
changetype: modify
add: givenName
givenName: Javier
-
delete: givenName
givenName: Javier

And ldapmodify fails because it can't add before than delete
ldap_modify: Type or value exists (20)
additional info: modify/add: givenName: value #0 already exists

Do you know any work around this ?

Thank you !

PD: I have about 500 entrys with trailing spaces

Yes. Looks the same way like standard desktops which all support

Bug#374967: samba: XP client unable to access files with a question mark in the name

2006-06-22 Thread Mark Nipper
Package: samba
Version: 3.0.22-1
Severity: important

This may be related to the previously reported quotation mark
bug (Debian bug #333778), but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I have a file named:
---
02-you know what you are?.flac

which appears as:
---
0J1HP7~2

with the default mangle names = yes. I can copy it to the local
machine, so with the default settings, the file is in fact accessible
(although Winamp doesn't like it much admittedly).

With mangle names = no, the file name shows up correctly, but
the file cannot be copied to the local machine giving an error of:
---
Cannot copy 02-you know what you are?: The filename, directory name, or
volume label syntax is incorrect.

under Windows XP Professional.

So really, it's basically exactly the same bug as the quotation
bug. But the problem is, by disabling name mangling, the file becomes
inaccessible, or at least does in this situation for me. I've got a
number of other files with question marks in the their names which
exhibit the same problem. It looks like upstream really should look
into this probably and I'd be interested if the people experiencing the
quotation mark bug were able to access the unmangled name version of the
file or not. Strangely, I can right click on the file and view its
properties from Windows, but any attempt to copy it results in the
aforementioned message and a rename attempt gave me:
---
Cannot rename file: Select only one file to rename, or use MS-DOS
wildcards (for example, *.txt) to rename a group of files with similar
names.

Winamp similarly fails trying to access the file, so it appears as if
only the basic stat information is available to the client.

I did not try changing my locale, so I cannot say whether this
would help.

noautoconfig disables a check while booting in userland at the grml
system. What I'm doing there is:

* check for existence of /dev/fd0; if it exits:
* run 'if dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/null bs=512 count=1', if successful:
* run blkid to identify devices with a specific label (GRMLCFG)

noautoconfig disables this check at all.

Booting grml on a system with a fd-connector but no fd present at
all provides the following syslog entry:

  end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

which I could also find in #373594.

Marc, does the same behaviour (hanging for ~2 min) occur on harddisk
installation or is it just at d-i?

IMHO this looks like an userland application is trying to access
/dev/fd0 several times (as the 'end_request: I/O error...' is
present several times). This usually happens when scanning for
disks/partitions/... Might this be the case, Frans?

Huh, your /etc/dbus-1/system.d directory is gone ? Did you move it to some
other place maybe ? I just can't imaging that the package system would cause
 this..

Yes, the new package remove sysrem.d directory.

Huh? Then how the hell does the kernel manage to make the floppy light
light up? I suspect that your hardware does support a floppy device to
some extend and that that confuses the kernel, causing it to retry and
 thus the delay.

Yes. Looks the same way like standard desktops which all support
floppy drives but do not have one connected.

Probably the laptop supports a floppy unit in the cdrom/2nd_battery bay?

Most probably.

I'd say this is a kernel bug. Anyway, something we cannot solve in the
installer so if you want to follow up on this, I suggest you do so
separately (probably with upstream kernel people).

Actually, this sounds like an issue I have with the grml live CD on
some systems where the behavior can be fixed by calling the special
option noautoconfig when booting. Maybe you can ask Mika Prokop
about what this option actually does. Ccing him on this issue.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#374966: OOo hebrew with gnome/KDE integration is messy

2006-06-22 Thread Shlomi Israel

Package: openoffice.org-l10n-he
Version: 2.0.2-3

it seems that OpenOffice.org, while in Hebrew mode (Right to Left),
with gnome/KDE look imitation, looks horribly wrong. I didn't know if
to post this bug in openoffice.org-gnome, openoffice.org-kde or
openoffice.org-l10n-he, because the bug seems to be related to all.

Gnome Interface Problem: http://hozt.net/image.php?img=20060606222636097567.jpeg
KDE Interface Problem: http://hozt.net/image.php?img=20060606235600744300.jpg
The default Interface with No Problem:
http://hozt.net/image.php?img=20060606222635661278.jpeg

As you can see with the pictures, there is a great usability problem
with the Hebrew package. some buttons don't work, while others are not
displayed correctly.
Also the Horizontal scroll bar is displayed badly.
when you save a file using the ooo dialog, you don't see the name you
are writing.
This bug affects other parts...

The official packages from OpenOffice.org.il don't have this problem.
This bug is quite problematic, denying the user from using the
packages in the Debian Repositories.

these are the packages from the openoffice.org.il site:
http://openoffice.org.il/download/2.0.1/linux_deb/OOo_2.0.1_he_install_linux_deb_20060402.sh

I had also sent this to the Debian-Hebrew Project Mailing list:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/debian-hebrew-common/2006-June/000181.html

Hi,

just a few days and my translations are already old ;) I wonder if I had
accidentally
grabbed an old .pot file. If it was the new version that introduced the new
templates,
in the future let me know about the changes by running podebconf-report-po.
Thanks.

By the way, take a look here:

http://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/errors-by-pkg#Pcpufreqd

It says that you need to add debconf-updatepo to debian/rules clean.

Best regards,

Hello,

This page here

http://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/errors-by-pkg#Pxorg

warns about outdated .pot and .po files and says that to fix this you need to
invoke debconf-updatepo in debian/rules clean. Sorry if this is bogus, just
wanted to point this out in case you simply had not noticed.

as lilo passes the root as major and minor, we need to check for fe too.
current lvm hook is very sloppy and tries to activate anything.

something like this to match current behaviour:

 case $vg in

Ah, I see, that explains some parts of the lvm script that I didn't
understand. Have you already fixed lilo support on top of my patch or do
you want an updated patch?

Quoting Javier Barroso ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
Now I try to invoke ldapvi again, and remove this trailing space, ldapvi

 givenName: Javier

And ldapmodify fails because it can't add before than delete
ldap_modify: Type or value exists (20)
additional info: modify/add: givenName: value #0 already exists

Do you know any work around this ?

There is a patch in the ldapvi source code directory that can be applied
to fix this.

Try downloading the source code, then run
  $ patch -p1 replace_not_delete_add.diff
and recompile.

PD: I have about 500 entrys with trailing spaces

Thank you for the report; I will properly apply that patch in the next
release. Whenever that will be...

Ah, I see, that explains some parts of the lvm script that I didn't
understand. Have you already fixed lilo support on top of my patch or do
 you want an updated patch?

 Regards,
 David

yes fixed in latest repo.

currently i have some hand binded as mentors.debian.net does not parse
the Uploaders control field, so my uploaded packages land nowhere.
hope that gets resolved soon.

also the bzr story leads me to dump that playground and switch soon
to git, than latest repo should get available again.

regards
