Bug#381472: translate-docformat: please provide alternative dependency on texlive

2006-08-22 Thread Norbert Preining
Hi Fellipe!

On Die, 22 Aug 2006, Felipe Augusto van de Wiel (faw) wrote:
Please make this package cooperate with the texlive packages in Debian.

 Sure. :)

Thanks.

I did that for translate-docformat 0.6-3 but there is one
important thing to consider, without tetex-bin it is not going to
be possible to install translate-docformat, because it depends on
jadetex and jadetex depends on the tetex-bin (without the texlive
alternative).

I know and I am working on this. Unfortunately there are different and
very crazy problems concerning format generation with jadetex which
stops me from making a NMU.

I hope to get this fixed soon.

Best wishes

Norbert

SUTTON and CHEAM (nouns)
Sutton and cheam are the kinds of dirt into which all dirt is
divided. 'Sutton' is the dark sort that always gets on to
light-coloured things, 'cheam' the light-coloured sort that clings to
dark items. Anyone who has ever found Marmite stains on a dress-shirt
or seagull goo on a dinner jacket (a) knows all about sutton and
cheam, and (b) is going to tome very curious dinner parties.

Bug#374356: confirmation of breakage and patch success

2006-08-22 Thread Jason Plumb
I can confirm the same problem on my setup (Unstable, 2.6.17 kernel,
libgpod0 0.3.2-1). In my case, though, my 3rd gen ipod *has* the
ModelNumStr line in SysInfo, but lacks the visibleBuildID (although
mine has a buildID).

I grabbed the source bundle of libgpod0, modifed the code per the patch,
rebuilt libgpod0, reinstalled it, and gtkpod and amarok work again.

In any case, the patch provided above worked just fine for me as well.
It looks like this fix (or similar) needs to happen upstream.

I poked around in the libgpod cvs tree and, from a brief look, it seems
that this fix has not yet been included in HEAD. I'll pass along a
report to the libgpod list.

Bug#384144: submiturls presseding

2006-08-22 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package:popularity-contest
Severity: wishlist

Hi

For the debian-edu CD we would like to use popcon, but as you might know we
love to work with preseeding and currently it is not possible to preseed the
submiturls. Enclosed I send you a patch which should enable it, please check
for errors as it is a fast and dirty one and the description could get some
improvements.
I hope you agree in adding a debconf question for it as we for instance need
it to decide which packages from the debian archive are needed on the CD and
in use by the schools and unis and which aren't.

Cheers

Bug#384080: Tk may not work without rgb-symlink

2006-08-22 Thread Michael Hartmann
Things work still fine without RgbPath line in xorg.conf and symlink.

I'm not using a xorg.conf generated by Debian, because it doesn't work on my
pc, so I just use the knoppix generated xorg.conf.

When reporting this I forgot to check that with a debian generated xorg.conf.
In fact I was just happy that perl-tk works fine again and reported this to
you and to the tk8.4 maintainer in hope that it is useful.

So if there is no RgbPath line in the Debian generated xorg.conf file, you
propably can close this bug report.

However, I still don't understand why just tk had that problems.

Thank you for your help.

Yes, that's fine. The bug address is for the archive and for the

not get mail sent to the bug address.

So the file exists on your system and is found by kpsewhich, and it is
strange that dvips doesn't find it. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce
this; but this may be because I don't have a dvi file that needs
texnansi.enc. Could you please try to build a minimal tex file that
produces the error, and send us

And, indeed, I have an argument for *not* using Tut mir Leid: it
uses the first person which is something that should be avoided: the
computer (and the software) is not a person.

This is less important than a wrong translation.
And the upstream author implied that the computer is a person
in his original string.

Hence closing the bug report.

This is unsatisfactory as the bug remains, the translation is still wrong,
Sorry would not be better.

Indeed, in French, we completely *removed* the translation for
Sorry. for that reason. The computer (and the software) should not
make apologies but only give facts.

This would be an issue with upstream.
My report was specifically about the translation of what the
upstream author has decided and not about the choice of what the
author wanted to say. There is a good German translation
for what the author wanted to say, so why not use it?
Otherwise the English original message text should be changed.

Bernhard

What do I need to do? I can understand 'cross site scripting' and
why it should be a security problem...

I don't _execute_ anything... ?!? Please advice.

What the program currently does, is allow random people to pass data
into it which is then output *unescaped* to the browser again. This
means that one can include all kinds of HTML and JavaScript into it. An
attack vector is to trick e.g. an admin using the system into going to
some URL with such data encoded. The data could contain JavaScript that
is executed in the security context of the browser - e.g. sends the
login cookie to the attacker.

Tricking a user in following such a crafted URL can be done by e.g.
redirecting from something looking harmless.

In general, you must not allow users to output random data to the screen
without escaping it, especially not via GET parameters. When using PHP,
the best solution is to use htmlspecialchars() on any output everywhere,
except when completely trusted already (but be careful with the latter).

I hope this is clear. It does need some refactoring of your package I'm
afraid. The web is full with documentation on this issue. Good luck!

Bug#381467: bibtex2html: please provide alternative dependency on texlive packages

2006-08-22 Thread Ralf Treinen
Hello,

On Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 02:01:17PM +0200, Frank Küster wrote:

I think that a virtual package latex-base or similar would make sense
in the long run. But it would require quite some work - and maintainers
would still have to change their control files, plus check that the
virtual package is sufficient for them. Because of this necessecity to
check for other texlive packages, I do not think that such a virtual
package will be used much, anyway. The only frequent use that I see is
for code generators (from docbook, texinfo, sgml, xml) who would
coordinate with the TeX maintainers that their code can be typeset with
only the virtual package installed.

In fact, the case of bibtex2htnl ist quite special, and IMHO an argument
against a virtual latex package (see below)

Ocaml people, do you know which LaTeX packages your packages need, or
have you just written all teTeX packages in the Depends line without
testing?

bibtex2html needs: bibtex and kpsewhich. As a build-dependency it also
needs latex in order to compile the documentation which is written in
latex. The bibtex2html package is only about processing bibtex files
and does not need a latex binary, fonts, or (la)tex macros in order
to function (if I am not terribly mistaken).

The current (build-)dependencies are there because:
- Depends tetex-extra since tetex-extra provides the bst files needed
 for functionning of bibtex2html
Depends tetex-bin for the bibtex binary
Depends tetex-base is probably not justified
- Build-depends on tetex-extra because of
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=72423

I think that using a disjunctive dependency would be fine for
bibtex2html. What are the tex-live packages providing the bibtex
binary, standard bst files, and kpsewhich?

This is one of the reasons why I don't like the X?-Python-Version

 1. building for python2.4 only as we build for one version only and
 python2.4 is the default version;
 2. building for python2.4 only as this is the only supported
 version.

Does this not work for case 1:

XS-Python-Version: current

and for case 2:

XS-Python-Version: 2.4

Yes it should. It's solely a dh_python bug... and not really a design issue
with the field as Joss thinks.

I could create a patch for it but as Joey wants to remove dh_python
altogether, I try to make it happen by moving what's required to
dh_pycentral/dh_pysupport instead of fixing something that will go away.

(If only Joey had been a bit more involved when the discussion on python
policy was live he could have advised me to create a library for
dependency generation from the beginning instead of letting me use
dh_python.

And at that time, I would have had no problem pushing it into
python-support/python-central.)

Bug#384019: vim-runtime: [NONFREE-DOC:OPL] vim's user manual and reference manual are not DFSG free

Package: vim-runtime

Justification: DFSG

Hi,

Currently, part of vim's documents (user manaul and reference manual)
are using OPL license, which is considered as DFSG-incompatible[1]. You
can verify this info by typing :help manual-copyright in vim editor.

Actually :help manual-copyright is incoherent about what license
applies to the manual. It states:

This material may be distributed only subject to the terms and
conditions set forth in the Open Publication License, v1.0 or later.
The latest version is presently available at:

http://www.opencontent.org/opl.shtml

(same license name for the book, no URL there)

The license pointed to by the URL however it is not the Open Publication
License v1.0 (which is indeed non-free according to debian-legal), but
rather the OpenContent License v1.0, for which I've found no discussion
on debian-legal (nor it is mentioned in [1]).

So, this is an issue: discover which license applies to the book and to
the manual.

Other sources make me think that the Open Publication License is indeed
the license that applies to it, but it should be verified:
- http://www.gnu.org/doc/other-free-books.html

We will get in touch with upstream to discover which is the case.

Thanks for the bug report.
Cheers.

Their explanation is attached below. If this explanation is
unsatisfactory and you have not received a better one in a separate

quoting from #383739:

quik just mounts 1 ext2 partition and reads etc/quik.conf, loads kernel
and initrd from the pathnames indicated in quik.conf. So if you want a
split /boot and root, you need to put your kernel(s) in /boot and put
quik.conf in /boot/etc/quik.conf.

And quik-installer does exactly this.

That what it is *supposed* to do. It doesn't work, which is why I have
filed the bug report on #383739 and this one. If it is supposed to
work it needs to be fixed.

Bug#384144: [Popcon-developers] Bug#384144: submiturls presseding

2006-08-22 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I like the idea of allowing custom debian distros to use preseeding to
adjust the popcon configuration. Not too surprising, as I designed
the preseeding system in debian, and have been promoting it ever
since. :)

[Steffen Joeris]
Enclosed I send you a patch which should enable it, please check for
errors as it is a fast and dirty one and the description could get
some improvements.

I would prefer to keep the default value in the file in /usr/share/,
and only insert an SUBMITURLS in popularity-contest.conf if it is
different from the default. This way, we can easily see which
installations are using non-default submission urls, and which are
not. This will help if we change submission URL in the future.

Do you have time to adjust the patch to behave that way instead?

Friendly,

Bug#383907: Is there an easy way to check if an interface is managed by wpa_action?

Kel Modderman writes:

On Monday 21 August 2006 00:02, Reinhard Tartler wrote:
This of course fails if the interface is controlled by wpa-roam aka
/sbin/wpa_action. I hardcased the check here for my interface, but it
would be nice if acpi-support could be improved and call `wpa_action $x
stop` by itself. For this we need to provide a reliable check if the
interface is managed by wpa_action or not.

You can check for the location of the ctrl_interface domain socket (that may
be in a different location according to config file used) or pidfile (which
is what the wpa-ifupdown init script/hack uses to identify interfaces bound
by wpa_supplicant/wpa_cli, and it is a fixed location).

The ctrl_interface socket may be changed by the user, so this is a
nogo. The pid file is a fixed location, but might get stale (i.e. it is
still there, but the corresponding daemon has died or has been killed by
the user. Even checking if there was a PID with that number doesn't work
reliably, because there might be another process with the same PID).

How about this:

if [ -x /sbin/wpa_action /sbin/wpa_action check $IFACE ];
 wpa_action ath0 down
else
 ifdown ath0
fi

Is this a workaround for #383168? If so, my current kludge is to have the
suspend manager, in my case it was hibernate but now it is powersave, stop
the wpa-ifupdown service on suspend.

#383168 (list of optimized glibc packages in postinst script is
outdated) seems unrelated to me. Was this a typo?

Your 'kludge' sounds interesting. How does it work with hibernate?
Perhaps we can write some hints in README.Debian (or README.suspending)

Bug#384032: More info: not a kernel bug after all

2006-08-22 Thread Rik Theys

Hi,

I've compared the output from the Fedora 2.6.17 kernel and it shows the
same output as the Debian kernel (on a different dual-core machine):

powernow-k8: Found 4 AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processors (version 1.60.2)

powernow-k8:2 : fid 0xa (1800 MHz), vid 0xc (1250 mV)
cpu_init done, current fid 0xe, vid 0x8

It also detects 4 CPU's but only lists the info for 2.

But here the CPU scaling works (see output below).

Fedora uses cpuspeed instead of powernowd. I've copied the cpuspeed
binary from the fedora to the Debian box and when I run cpuspeed, all
the cores get clocked down (as they should).

So I'm going to reassign this bug to powernowd again...

Bug#248868: kde: Anti-aliasing is on but sub-pixel hinting is off (resolution)

2006-08-22 Thread Eric Lavarde
Package: kde
Version: 5:47
Followup-For: Bug #248868

Hi,

perhaps for people finding this bug report and agreeing with the fact
that fonts have been uglified with the recent kde updates.
The issue is not anti-aliasing per se but that sub-pixel hinting as been put
off per default.
You can put it back on with KDE - Control Center - Appearance
Themes - Fonts - Configure... (next to use anti-aliasing for fonts).

For sake of my own understanding: I remember vaguely that this sub-pixel
hinting was documented as part of the xserver-xfree86 configuration
(asking for LCD vs. CRT), but seems to have disappeared from
xserver-xorg. Is it the same thing? And wouldn't it make sense to have
sub-pixel hinting on per default, as I would expect most people to have
now an LCD screen!?

Thanks, Eric

Package: pgf
Version: 1.00-1

Dear Ohura-san!

Please prepare an updated pgf package with version 1.01. The 1.00
version is severly broken with respect to the compatibility mode. All
documents which have been written with the 0.65 syntax and use arrows or
boxes will not display correctly.

Bug#381729: base-files: The original Artistic license if free by Debian's standards (DFSG 10)

2006-08-22 Thread lindev
Package: base-files
Version: 3.1.14
Followup-For: Bug #381729

The Debian Free Software Guidelines (part of the Social
Contract) clause 10 defines the Artistic License as free for the
purposes of Debian. Because the Social Contract and the DFSG
were written in the mid 1990s, it obviously refers to the
version of the Artistic license used back then. I thought
anyone with a debian.org e-mail address had been trained and
tested in knowing the Social Contract...

Much more importantly, the licenses in usr/share/common-licenses
are NOT there to be a catalog of currently approved free
licenses. They are there so hundreds of other packages can omit
shipping those specific license texts in their
/usr/share/doc/package/ dir. To make this scheme legally
correct, a file in /usr/share/common-licenses should not be
changed as long as any other packages refer to that file in
their /usr/share/doc/package/copyright or elsewhere.

So even if a need occurs to add Artistic-2.0 or GPL-3.0, the
files that hold the previous versions of those licenses should
not be changed or removed anytime soon.

I suggest that this bug is closed with a tag indicating rejection
(so readers of the BTS don't thing this change was made).

Bug#384147: base-files: The GPL-2 text in 3.1.14 and 3.1.15 contains semantic changes, UNDO!

2006-08-22 Thread Jakob Bohm
Package: base-files
Version: 3.1.14
Severity: normal

The Updated GPL-2 text introduced in base-files 3.1.14 and
still present base-files 3.1.15 doesn't just update the FSF
postal address. It also contains 2 unrelated changes to the
license which have not been approved by every copyright holder
of GPL-2 licensed software in Debian. I strongly suggest that
the change is undone. It is better to include a historic FSF
postal address, than to include the wrong text in the rest of
the license.

The two changes are:

1. The 1991 recomendation to use the Library GPL (LGPL-2 and
later) has been changed to refer to the Lesser GPL (LGPL-2.1 and
later). This is a major semantic change, even if it is only a
recommendation.

2. The text has been reformatted, removing all form-feeds and
changing some spaces, this is less important but still not ok
for a legal document.

Bug#384152: update-grub: generates wrong device entries in menu.lst

2006-08-22 Thread Stefan Schwarzer
Package: grub
Version: 0.97-13
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

in short: whenever I run update-grub, it changes the device entries for
kernel and initrd location in menu.lst from (hd0,0) to (hd2,0) rendering the
system unbootable (without additional work).

in more detail: my setup is a bit unusual. I have two optical drives on
the primary IDE bus and one harddisc on the secondary bus, used for backup.
The system boots from an SATA drive in native mode for which I need to
put the (hd0,0) entries in menu.lst to be recognized as boot device.
If I use grub from floppy, it finds the kernel and initrd on my
root filesystem using the (hd0,0) device/partition identifier. However,
update-grub seems to think that it is smarter and changes the entries
to (hd2,0) - oohps.

mozilla and mozilla-firefox on debian sarge (current with security

can you please downgrade mozilla-firefox to the current stable release

I installed firefox and mozilla from a debian sarge DVD.

Firefox with version:

also segfault. Behaviour is the same for Mozilla and Firefox.

I know, but I doubt 'new' users can find that option.
Also, I think the default option doesn't make any sense, so could that

Please could you add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions? This is my
monitor's optimal resolution.

Sidenote: This is getting awkward. I think it'd be a good idea to replace the
multiselect template with a text one that has the same defaults. This way
users would be able to add their own (which is increasingly common due to the
spreading of LCD with their fixed sizes).

Bug#384153: openoffice.org-calc refuses to import a table from csv

2006-08-22 Thread Christian Frommeyer
Package: openoffice.org-calc
Version: 2.0.3-6
Severity: normal

Sometimes I have to import a csv-File into Calc. I used to do this via
Insert-Table and create Table from File (or the like - my OOo uses
german language) in OOo 1.*
Now I use OOo 2 and this won't work any more.
I can select a file via the file-picker-dialog but it won't show up in
the Table-insertion-dialog.
What I found out just now while typing is, that changing the extension
from .nfx as it was to .csv helps as a workaround.

Greetings Chris

I'll let you know as soon as I'll have more easy possibility to try
this. I indeed wanted to first avoid omitting to report. Which is why
I sent the BR as soon as I could.even though I hadn't all elements
I knew you would ask...

If that's not the case and it locks hard, you can try to unload some

Hi Hadmut,

Hadmut Danisch wrote:

Hi,

stunnel intensively logs to syslog. This causes logcheck to report
heaps of messages. Therefore, every debian package of programs writing
to syslog should come with a configuration file in /etc/logcheck,
telling which messages can safely ignored.

I think that logcheck-database is what you are looking for.
Maybe I can add a note about this package in the README.Debian file.

Bug#376868: dpkg-dev: dpkg-source exits with error 13

2006-08-22 Thread Nicolas François

It might also be worth noting that this same configuration was not a
problem under sarge. The problem did not occur until I upgraded my
system from sarge to etch on Sunday. Then the boot process broke due to
the libnss-ldap changes (ldap then compat no longer worked in
/etc/nsswitch.conf, but that's a different bug report). Once
/etc/nsswitch.conf was changed to files then ldap the boot process at
least continued. Then I found this problem.

It seems that some change with libnss-ldap between sarge and etch is
wreaking havoc on configurations that have thus far been working fine.
I know of breakage within at least three different locations related to
the changes (boot, dbus/hal, and now this).

My opinion is that there is a SIGPIPE which is not catched at one of these
levels: libnss-ldap, libc, or perl.

This could be related to the bug 190072 (libnss-ldap: Processes may
receive SIGPIPE from LDAP session timeouts), but this bug was present in
Sarge.

Also, it could be interresting to test with the previous versions of
libnss-ldap to see when the problem appeared, or with the patch attached
to 190072.

I have no LDAP box, so I can't test. I would appreciate if you could.
You can test with the single perl command sent in the previous messages to
this bug.

Kind Regards,

Bug#379405: parted: bug-ACK + REQ for severity-raise + partition table images included

2006-08-22 Thread Marc-Jano Knopp
Package: parted
Version: 1.7.1-2.1
Followup-For: Bug #379405

I can fully acknowledge the existence of this bug. It seems to be
reproducible.

Furthermore, I think this bug may deserve a severity of important,
as an only seemingly empty partition table might lead to severe data
loss, as the user, misled by the wrong output of parted, assumes the
partition to be empty and feels safe to manipulate it arbitrarily.

Setup
-

* PII/400 (Tyan board with BX chipset, 640 MB non-ECC RAM)
* Adaptec ASC-29160 U160-SCSI hostadapter with two U2W-drives attached:
/dev/sda - Seagate ST39173LC (9 GB), ID #9
/dev/sdb - Quantum Viking VK4550J (4 GB, SUN labeled), ID #10
 Hostadapter firmware version 2.57.0
* Adaptec AHA-3940 dual channel SCSI hostadapter with nothing attached,
 firmware version 1.12
* System: Debian Etch

Symptom
---

parted does not display the partition table of /dev/sdb, if unit is
mb, gb or tb (the workaround mentioned in #369583 often, but
not always works). For units b and kb, the partition table is
correctly shown. Examples:

Bytes:

 # parted /dev/sdb unit b print

 Disk /dev/sdb: 4293181951B
 Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
 Partition Table: msdos

Number StartEnd Size Type File system Flags
 1 32256B 1011709439B 1011677184B primary ext3
 2 1011709440B 4285370879B 3273661440B primary ext3

Information: Don't forget to update /etc/fstab, if necessary.

Megabytes:

 # parted /dev/sdb unit mb print

 Disk /dev/sdb: 4293MB
 Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
 Partition Table: msdos

Information: Don't forget to update /etc/fstab, if necessary.

CHS geometry of both drives:

 # parted /dev/sda unit chs print

 Disk /dev/sda: 1106,243,40
 Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
BIOS cylinder, head, sector geometry: 1106,255,63. Each cylinder is 8225kB.
 Partition Table: msdos
 [...]

 # parted /dev/sdb unit chs print

 Disk /dev/sdb: 521,242,9
 Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
BIOS cylinder, head, sector geometry: 521,255,63. Each cylinder is 8225kB.
 Partition Table: msdos
 [...]

In case that the partition tables get misinterpreted by parted or
contains data that confuses it, I've attached the MBRs of both drives
to this bug report, created by

 dd if=/dev/sda of=sda.mbr bs=512 count=1 # and sdb, respectively

Besides the respective partition table, sda.mbr contains a GRUB, and
sdb.mbr either a LILO or GRUB boot loader.

Bug#382697: kbd-chooser: Greek keyboard layout selection fails (Patch #2)

2006-08-22 Thread Christian Perrier

the attached patch, besides enabling iso-8859-7, disables those and
should make it easier to re-enable them if needed.
Let me know if you prefere this second patch attached to a
separate whishlist bug.

It is, by definition, a bit more invasive and it would be better if
someone with all the skills in keyboard/console stuff (such as
Alastair, Denis, Eugen) looks at it.

I suggest committing the first patch (we are in near freeze time)
and report the other one as a separate BR (with a big risk of being
digged in a big load of dust, given the lack of maintenance of
kbd-chooser).

Bug#347720: Correction for description of the effects of this bug

2006-08-22 Thread Christian Mueller
I mixed two things up when I was submitting this bug. The effect of this
bug is *not* that the module load order changes but that too many
modules get loaded.

The problem I had with this, apart from having a bloated initrd image,
was that the USB driver on the affected box was causing severe hardware
problems, blocking interrupts for other PCI cards, and the image created
by mkinitrd would always load the USB driver module at boot time
regardless of what I put into /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf

With the suggested fix, only those modules which are really needed at
boot time are loaded. Here's a comparison of the modules loaded with and
without the fix:

With the fix:
-

modprobe -k piix
modprobe -k pdc202xx_new
modprobe -k vesafb /dev/null 21
modprobe -k fbcon 2 /dev/null
modprobe -k unix 2 /dev/null

Out of curiosity: if you don't specify any resolutions explicitly, does
the X server automagically come up in 1280x800? If not, which driver are
you using?

I haven't been able to reproduce the original bug because one of the
condition needed was Bug#156118 which has been fixed in the meantime.

However I have been able to verify that the other conditions are still
met and the X behavior can still be reproduced:

 - X server at 75 dpi

 - the Type1 module is loaded in the X server

 - the directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 is at the end of X fontpath

 - package gsfonts-x11 installed

I have run the following commands:

### install package gsfonts-x11

-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1

The bogus fonts are those with pxlsz=12 and awgWdth=0. Note that
the pxlsz depends on the dpi of the server and will be different
if you run the server at a different dpi.

I don't know if it is correct for the X server to list scalable fonts
as fixed fonts but in that case I think they should be listed *after*
the true fixed fonts, while at the present it is the contrary:

$ xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-116-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1

In other words it could be simply a problem of sorting the results
in a better way.

Since the Tk bug has been fixed you can't reproduce the bug with
wish but you can show a similar behavior with the following commands:

xfd -fn `xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 |
head -1`
xfd -fn `xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 |
tail -1`

I have run the test on ubuntu hoary with the following packages:

Lukáš Lalinský is upstream maintainer as well as Debian package

Lukáš, could you put a note about your plans the two open bugs?

Sure. Fix for both of them is already in the MusicBrainz SVN (for this one it's
http://bugs.musicbrainz.org/changeset/8440) and both of these fixes are also
included in the 2.1.4 release:
http://ftp.musicbrainz.org/pub/musicbrainz/libmusicbrainz-2.1.4.tar.gz

Here is the package for unstable:

http://users.musicbrainz.org/~luks/tmp/libmusicbrainz-2.1_2.1.4.orig.tar.gz
Jens, could you please upload it?

And for stable-security, this patch could be probably used (however I'm not sure
how to prepare the package):

Bug#384160: findutils: [l10n:ro] find: typo in error message (shash-uri should be at worst slash-uri)

Hello,

The Romanian translation of find has a typo in one of the error
messages:

$ find -type f -name a/*
'find ... -print0 | grep -FzZ a/*'.

Bug#384163: dh_builddeb: change argument order to tar call

2006-08-22 Thread Matthias Urlichs
Package: debhelper
Version: 5.0.37.3ubuntu1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

dh_builddeb emits a spurious warning when used with the new GNU tar.

$ fakeroot dh_builddeb

tar: -: file name read contains nul character

strace-ing the thing yields:

[pid 30927] execve(/bin/tar, [tar, -cf, -, -T, -, --null,
--no-recursion], [/* 58 vars */]) = 0

The problem is (see debbug #375864) that --null occurs after -T.
Moving it to the front should be backwards-compatible, and removes
the spurious warning.

And, indeed, I have an argument for *not* using Tut mir Leid: it
uses the first person which is something that should be avoided: the
computer (and the software) is not a person.

This is less important than a wrong translation.
And the upstream author implied that the computer is a person
in his original string.

Mumble

So, cloning to ask Tomasz to rephrase (with 80% chances that he will
not).

If Tomasz refuses, I'll close the Please avoid apologies when
changing the password fails bug report and only French will continue
to be correct in my opinion.

For the German translation, *anyway*, the final word will go to the
translator, ie Holger Wansing who, I suppose, will request for the
advice of the German team and either accept your proposed change or
prefer keeping the Entschuldigung or even something else.

If Holger refuses, I'll close the bug and this will be hopefully
definitive. If he accepts, he'll have to propose us a patch and we'll
forward it to upstream.

Bug#384144: [Popcon-developers] Bug#384144: submiturls presseding

2006-08-22 Thread Steffen Joeris
Hi
I would prefer to keep the default value in the file in /usr/share/,
and only insert an SUBMITURLS in popularity-contest.conf if it is
different from the default. This way, we can easily see which
installations are using non-default submission urls, and which are
not. This will help if we change submission URL in the future.

Do you have time to adjust the patch to behave that way instead?
That should do the job if i get you right.

Thanks for your work.

Bug#357255: pgf: NMU prepared

2006-08-22 Thread Norbert Preining
Package: pgf
Version: 1.00-1
Followup-For: Bug #357255

Dear Ohura-san!

I have prepared a package for 1.01, on the way fixing some bugs, here is
the relevant Debian changelog entry:
 * add correct license statement into the copyright file and include
the list of covered files FILES (Closes: #364749)
 * new upstream, fixing the compatibility problems (Closes: #357255)
 * restrict the dependency to tetex = 3.0, and add an additional
dependency on texlive-latex-recommended (Closes: #357008)
 * adapt the debian files for the new location of the documentation files
cleaned up the rules files from unnecessary commented dh_calls
 * fix the doc-base file to reference an existing pgfmanual.pdf
 * exclude svg files from being compressed, otherwise html documentation
cannot be viewed (Closes: #360256)
 * bump standards version to 3.7.2, no changes necessary
 * change build-dep-indep to build-deps for dephelper
 * add a lintian override file for the pseudo extra license file
usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/pgf/text-en/pgfmanual-en-license.tex.gz

You can get the signed sources and binary files from
deb(-src) http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ check/

I attach a diff between the debian files of 1.00-1 and 1.01-0.1.

Further question I have:
I want to kill the pgf, xcolor and beamer from the texlive packages and
depend on your packages here. For pgf I have already added additional
dependencies onto texlive (what actually do you need from tetex/texlive,
I suppose xkeyval?).

For xcolor nothing has to be done, as it does not depend on tetex in any
way.

For latex-beamer you added a dependency on tetex-extra. Could you tell
me which sty files you actually need? I would suggest that you add an
alternative dependency
| texlive-latex-recommended (= 2005.dfsg.1-2)
if this is done I can remove the respective files from the texlive
packages, reducing duplication in the Debian archive.

Thanks a lot for your attention and all the best

Norbert

Bug#383290: [Pkg-cups-devel] Bug#383290: cupsys: after an update the socket backend isn't available any longer

Hm, interesting.
Can you remember which cupsys version you upgrade from?
No, can't remember what version I upgraded, but I do upgrade/dist-upgrade
minimum once a week.

1.2.1-4 to 1.2.2-1 has not any changes around debconf.
1.2.1-3 had a change because I added SNMP backend, but I can't believe
it cause an error.

 * cupsys/backend: ipp, lpd, parallel, usb

Maybe you know because you're using Unstable, dpkg-reconfigure cupsys
and enable socket will back socket backend again.
I know the command but haven't run this for a long time. The system was
installed 6 years ago, upgraded to Unstable and hold up-to-date.
I run the command and now I saw the choice to enable/disable available
backends and in my configuration (or is it default???) the socket backend is
not activated. I use this printer with the socket backend not very often, so
maybe the backend isn't available since a longer time (since the last change
around debconf??) and the last time I missed the backend, I created the link
manually.

I think you can close the bug.

Bug#384168: does not install without acpid

2006-08-22 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: powersaved
Version: 0.12.20-1
Severity: serious

The powersaved init script will not start if acpid is not running. It
shows a helpful message about this, but I expect that package dependencies
and maintainer scripts are used to automate package installation.

So if acpid is indeed required, then this package must depend on it.
If not, the init script or postinst script must be in written in a way
that it does not fail on installation.

Bug#201581: closed by Nathanael Nerode (Perhaps Debian 3.1 will work for you)

2006-08-22 Thread John Walsh

Nathanael,

Thanks for the update, and yes, I am still interested !

I've been on Fedora 1 since RedHat droped us 'home' users.

FC2 would not install for me, so I tried Deb3.0...

I have since found that Deb will install, but I'm torn between Debian
and CentOS - as I am more familiar with the RedHat style of startup
scripts...

One day I'll get Debian going, I'm sure...

John.

Debian 3.0 is now obsolete, so I'm closing this bug report.

The good news is that the installer changed dramatically for Debian 3.1.
Please try installing Debian 3.1 if you're still interested (3 years later!).
If it doesn't work, you can file a bug report against 'installation-reports'.

Bug#381266: cups-driverd hangs

2006-08-22 Thread Stuart Brady
I had the same problem, but I've found a workaround for it.

I was initially using gnome-cups-manager -- it would freeze for over 15
minutes with cups-driverd and cupsys eating 100% CPU, before I even got
to see a list of printers. I did also try the web interface -- it did
give me a list of printers, but failed to add anything. (cups-driverd
was using 100% CPU.)

BTW, I've found what looks like the same problem reported at
http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-April/017291.html

It magically fixed itself after I removed the following symlink:

/usr/share/ppd/cups-transitional-dir - ../cups/model

(Note the symlink: /usr/share/cups/model/ppd - /usr/share/ppd)

It might be necessary to rm -fr /var/cache/cups at the same time.

It now takes around ten seconds!

I had tried rm -fr /var/cache/cups first, and I also reinstalled cups,
but that didn't seem to have any effect. (Actually, removing the cache
just seemed to make things slower. cups-driverd ended up using 100 MB
either way, but it took a lot longer after removing the cache.)

Cheers,

without problems. It seems if hald starts after acpid, it works (or at
least starts cleanly). But hald is started by udev, so it's hard to
control that order sensibly.

Now the problem is that for example powersaved needs both hal and acpid.
powersaved is in turn used by kpowersave. But if you can't install the
dependencies together, the whole group of packages becomes useless.

Bug#377915: Can't change sample rate

2006-08-22 Thread Daniel James

Hi Günter,

I can confirm this bug. It does not seem to affect the sample rate of
jackd, only the display of the sample rate within the qjackctl GUI. You
can see this in the attached screenshot, where jackd is running at 44100
Hz but the GUI shows 48000 Hz. You can also see this wrong figure in the
Status window.

A new upstream version 0.2.20 is available:

http://qjackctl.sourceforge.net/qjackctl-dl1.html

Cheers!

Daniel

Bug#382877: gcom: sigmon kills wvdial/pppd

Using the sigmon script, belonging to the gcom package, kills pppd
started with wvdial.

Steps to reproduce the problem in my system:

[ ... ]

4) At any time after this, fire up sigmon. It begins to probe the signal
strength. pppd is killed as soon as the script is started and connection
is lost.

Unfortunately it's not reproducible for me. I tried several times but
pppd was never terminated. Is there any helpful syslog output to find
out why pppd terminates? Did you try another kernel?

greets Jimmy

P.S.: Sorry for the late reply, was on vacation.

Bug#384162: gnokii-smsd-mysql fails to start, /usr/lib/smsd/libmysql.so: undefined symbol

Trying to start smsd ends in following error:

:~$ sudo smsd -u -p xx -d smsgw -c localhost -m mysql
-f /var/log/gnokiid.log
/usr/lib/smsd/libmysql.so: undefined symbol: DB_ByeCannot load database module
mysql in directory /usr/lib/smsd!

Other db-modules fails with same error (with different lib*.so file of
course).

It's fixed in CVS version and will be present in 0.6.14 release. If
you need to backport it to 0.6.13 release take all smsd/ dir changes.

take care,
pkot

Bug#357255: pgf: NMU prepared

How did you get the list of covered files? And is there source for the
images?

 * adapt the debian files for the new location of the documentation files
cleaned up the rules files from unnecessary commented dh_calls

I suggest not to make cosmetic changes in an NMU.

Bug#384175: fglrx-kernel-src: Suggested reordering of installation methods in documentation

2006-08-22 Thread Ted Percival
Package: fglrx-kernel-src
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

A friend was installing the fglrx driver on his machine following the
documentation provided (thank you!), and started following the
instructions in the README.Debian file, without realising that the
different methods (a to d) were exclusive and the preferred one was
actually the _last_ one in the document.

I propose the instructions be re-ordered based on their ease-of-use and
likelihood of Just Working, so I put them in this order:
a: module-assistant (was d)
b: make-kpkg (was c)
c: make.sh (was a)
d: kernel makefile (was b)

My main plan was to put the recommended module-assistant method first, I
don't particularly mind if you disagree with my ordering of the other
three methods :)

The patch is a bit unclear because of the whitespace handling. I simply
reordered them and reworded the paragraph before the four options.

Thanks for your good work.
