Bug#381472: translate-docformat: please provide alternative dependency on texlive
Hi Fellipe! On Die, 22 Aug 2006, Felipe Augusto van de Wiel (faw) wrote: Please make this package cooperate with the texlive packages in Debian. Sure. :) Thanks. I did that for translate-docformat 0.6-3 but there is one important thing to consider, without tetex-bin it is not going to be possible to install translate-docformat, because it depends on jadetex and jadetex depends on the tetex-bin (without the texlive alternative). I know and I am working on this. Unfortunately there are different and very crazy problems concerning format generation with jadetex which stops me from making a NMU. I hope to get this fixed soon. Bug#374356: confirmation of breakage and patch success
I can confirm the same problem on my setup (Unstable, 2.6.17 kernel, libgpod0 0.3.2-1). In my case, though, my 3rd gen ipod *has* the ModelNumStr line in SysInfo, but lacks the visibleBuildID (although mine has a buildID). I grabbed the source bundle of libgpod0, modifed the code per the patch, rebuilt libgpod0, reinstalled it, and gtkpod and amarok work again. In any case, the patch provided above worked just fine for me as well. It looks like this fix (or similar) needs to happen upstream. I poked around in the libgpod cvs tree and, from a brief look, it seems that this fix has not yet been included in HEAD. I'll pass along a report to the libgpod list. -jason -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#384080: Tk may not work without rgb-symlink
Things work still fine without RgbPath line in xorg.conf and symlink. I'm not using a xorg.conf generated by Debian, because it doesn't work on my pc, so I just use the knoppix generated xorg.conf. When reporting this I forgot to check that with a debian generated xorg.conf. In fact I was just happy that perl-tk works fine again and reported this to you and to the tk8.4 maintainer in hope that it is useful. So if there is no RgbPath line in the Debian generated xorg.conf file, you propably can close this bug report. However, I still don't understand why just tk had that problems. This is less important than a wrong translation. And the upstream author implied that the computer is a person in his original string. Hence closing the bug report. This is unsatisfactory as the bug remains, the translation is still wrong, Sorry would not be better. Indeed, in French, we completely *removed* the translation for Sorry. for that reason. The computer (and the software) should not make apologies but only give facts. This would be an issue with upstream. My report was specifically about the translation of what the upstream author has decided and not about the choice of what the author wanted to say. There is a good German translation for what the author wanted to say, so why not use it? Otherwise the English original message text should be changed. What the program currently does, is allow random people to pass data into it which is then output *unescaped* to the browser again. This means that one can include all kinds of HTML and JavaScript into it. An attack vector is to trick e.g. an admin using the system into going to some URL with such data encoded. The data could contain JavaScript that is executed in the security context of the browser - e.g. sends the login cookie to the attacker. Tricking a user in following such a crafted URL can be done by e.g. redirecting from something looking harmless. In general, you must not allow users to output random data to the screen without escaping it, especially not via GET parameters. When using PHP, the best solution is to use htmlspecialchars() on any output everywhere, except when completely trusted already (but be careful with the latter). I hope this is clear. It does need some refactoring of your package I'm afraid. The web is full with documentation on this issue. Good luck! Thijs signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

But it would require quite some work - and maintainers would still have to change their control files, plus check that the virtual package is sufficient for them. Because of this necessecity to check for other texlive packages, I do not think that such a virtual package will be used much, anyway. The only frequent use that I see is for code generators (from docbook, texinfo, sgml, xml) who would coordinate with the TeX maintainers that their code can be typeset with only the virtual package installed. In fact, the case of bibtex2htnl ist quite special, and IMHO an argument against a virtual latex package (see below) Ocaml people, do you know which LaTeX packages your packages need, or have you just written all teTeX packages in the Depends line without testing? bibtex2html needs: bibtex and kpsewhich. As a build-dependency it also needs latex in order to compile the documentation which is written in latex. The bibtex2html package is only about processing bibtex files and does not need a latex binary, fonts, or (la)tex macros in order to function (if I am not terribly mistaken). The current (build-)dependencies are there because: - Depends tetex-extra since tetex-extra provides the bst files needed for functionning of bibtex2html Depends tetex-bin for the bibtex binary Depends tetex-base is probably not justified - Build-depends on tetex-extra because of http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=72423 I think that using a disjunctive dependency would be fine for bibtex2html. I could create a patch for it but as Joey wants to remove dh_python altogether, I try to make it happen by moving what's required to dh_pycentral/dh_pysupport instead of fixing something that will go away. (If only Joey had been a bit more involved when the discussion on python policy was live he could have advised me to create a library for dependency generation from the beginning instead of letting me use dh_python. And at that time, I would have had no problem pushing it into python-support/python-central.) Bug#384019: vim-runtime: [NONFREE-DOC:OPL] vim's user manual and reference manual are not DFSG free

You can verify this info by typing :help manual-copyright in vim editor. Actually :help manual-copyright is incoherent about what license applies to the manual. It states: This material may be distributed only subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the Open Publication License, v1.0 or later. The latest version is presently available at: http://www.opencontent.org/opl.shtml (same license name for the book, no URL there) The license pointed to by the URL however it is not the Open Publication License v1.0 (which is indeed non-free according to debian-legal), but rather the OpenContent License v1.0, for which I've found no discussion on debian-legal (nor it is mentioned in [1]). So, this is an issue: discover which license applies to the book and to the manual. Other sources make me think that the Open Publication License is indeed the license that applies to it, but it should be verified: - http://www.moolenaar.net/vim_errata.html - http://www.gnu.org/doc/other-free-books.html We will get in touch with upstream to discover which is the case. Bug#384144: [Popcon-developers] Bug#384144: submiturls presseding
I like the idea of allowing custom debian distros to use preseeding to adjust the popcon configuration. Not too surprising, as I designed the preseeding system in debian, and have been promoting it ever since. :) [Steffen Joeris] Enclosed I send you a patch which should enable it, please check for errors as it is a fast and dirty one and the description could get some improvements. I would prefer to keep the default value in the file in /usr/share/, and only insert an SUBMITURLS in popularity-contest.conf if it is different from the default. This way, we can easily see which installations are using non-default submission urls, and which are not. This will help if we change submission URL in the future. Do you have time to adjust the patch to behave that way instead? Friendly, -- Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#383907: Is there an easy way to check if an interface is managed by wpa_action?
Kel Modderman [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: On Monday 21 August 2006 00:02, Reinhard Tartler wrote: This of course fails if the interface is controlled by wpa-roam aka /sbin/wpa_action. I hardcased the check here for my interface, but it would be nice if acpi-support could be improved and call `wpa_action $x stop` by itself. For this we need to provide a reliable check if the interface is managed by wpa_action or not. You can check for the location of the ctrl_interface domain socket (that may be in a different location according to config file used) or pidfile (which is what the wpa-ifupdown init script/hack uses to identify interfaces bound by wpa_supplicant/wpa_cli, and it is a fixed location). The ctrl_interface socket may be changed by the user, so this is a nogo. The pid file is a fixed location, but might get stale (i.e. it is still there, but the corresponding daemon has died or has been killed by the user. Even checking if there was a PID with that number doesn't work reliably, because there might be another process with the same PID). How about this: if [ -x /sbin/wpa_action /sbin/wpa_action check $IFACE ]; wpa_action ath0 down else ifdown ath0 fi Is this a workaround for #383168? If so, my current kludge is to have the suspend manager, in my case it was hibernate but now it is powersave, stop the wpa-ifupdown service on suspend. #383168 (list of optimized glibc packages in postinst script is outdated) seems unrelated to me. Was this a typo? Your 'kludge' sounds interesting. How does it work with hibernate? Bug#248868: kde: Anti-aliasing is on but sub-pixel hinting is off (resolution)
Package: kde Version: 5:47 Followup-For: Bug #248868 Hi, perhaps for people finding this bug report and agreeing with the fact that fonts have been uglified with the recent kde updates. The issue is not anti-aliasing per se but that sub-pixel hinting as been put off per default. You can put it back on with KDE - Control Center - Appearance Themes - Fonts - Configure... (next to use anti-aliasing for fonts). For sake of my own understanding: I remember vaguely that this sub-pixel hinting was documented as part of the xserver-xfree86 configuration (asking for LCD vs. CRT), but seems to have disappeared from xserver-xorg. Is it the same thing? And wouldn't it make sense to have sub-pixel hinting on per default, as I would expect most people to have now an LCD screen!? Bug#381729: base-files: The original Artistic license if free by Debian's standards (DFSG 10)
Package: base-files Version: 3.1.14 Followup-For: Bug #381729 The Debian Free Software Guidelines (part of the Social Contract) clause 10 defines the Artistic License as free for the purposes of Debian. Because the Social Contract and the DFSG were written in the mid 1990s, it obviously refers to the version of the Artistic license used back then. I thought anyone with a debian.org e-mail address had been trained and tested in knowing the Social Contract... Much more importantly, the licenses in usr/share/common-licenses are NOT there to be a catalog of currently approved free licenses. They are there so hundreds of other packages can omit shipping those specific license texts in their /usr/share/doc/package/ dir. To make this scheme legally correct, a file in /usr/share/common-licenses should not be changed as long as any other packages refer to that file in their /usr/share/doc/package/copyright or elsewhere. So even if a need occurs to add Artistic-2.0 or GPL-3.0, the files that hold the previous versions of those licenses should not be changed or removed anytime soon. Package: base-files Version: 3.1.14 Severity: normal The Updated GPL-2 text introduced in base-files 3.1.14 and still present base-files 3.1.15 doesn't just update the FSF postal address. It also contains 2 unrelated changes to the license which have not been approved by every copyright holder of GPL-2 licensed software in Debian. I strongly suggest that the change is undone. It is better to include a historic FSF postal address, than to include the wrong text in the rest of the license. The two changes are: 1. The 1991 recomendation to use the Library GPL (LGPL-2 and later) has been changed to refer to the Lesser GPL (LGPL-2.1 and later). This is a major semantic change, even if it is only a recommendation. 2. Bug#384151: please add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions
Package: xserver-xorg Severity: wishlist Please could you add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions? This is my monitor's optimal resolution. Sidenote: This is getting awkward. I think it'd be a good idea to replace the multiselect template with a text one that has the same defaults. This way users would be able to add their own (which is increasingly common due to the spreading of LCD with their fixed sizes). -- Robert Millan ACK STORM, S.L. - http://www.ackstorm.es -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I can select a file via the file-picker-dialog but it won't show up in the Table-insertion-dialog. I think it will be best to send your bug report upstream. But we can try to find the problem ourselves first. Yep. I agree and this is indeed what I would have done as maintainer..:-) Does the the screen just stay black, but for the rest it is OK? Can you still ssh into your machine? I'll let you know as soon as I'll have more easy possibility to try this. I indeed wanted to first avoid omitting to report. Which is why I sent the BR as soon as I could.even though I hadn't all elements I knew you would ask... If that's not the case and it locks hard, you can try to unload some modules first; the usb and ieee1394 modules for example. Yep, will try that also. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

On Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 11:23:39PM -0400, Jamin W. Collins wrote: It might also be worth noting that this same configuration was not a problem under sarge. The problem did not occur until I upgraded my system from sarge to etch on Sunday. Then the boot process broke due to the libnss-ldap changes (ldap then compat no longer worked in /etc/nsswitch.conf, but that's a different bug report). Once /etc/nsswitch.conf was changed to files then ldap the boot process at least continued. Then I found this problem. It seems that some change with libnss-ldap between sarge and etch is wreaking havoc on configurations that have thus far been working fine. I know of breakage within at least three different locations related to the changes (boot, dbus/hal, and now this). My opinion is that there is a SIGPIPE which is not catched at one of these levels: libnss-ldap, libc, or perl. This could be related to the bug 190072 (libnss-ldap: Processes may receive SIGPIPE from LDAP session timeouts), but this bug was present in Sarge. Also, it could be interresting to test with the previous versions of libnss-ldap to see when the problem appeared, or with the patch attached to 190072. I have no LDAP box, so I can't test. I would appreciate if you could. You can test with the single perl command sent in the previous messages to this bug. Bug#379405: parted: bug-ACK + REQ for severity-raise + partition table images included
Package: parted Version: 1.7.1-2.1 Followup-For: Bug #379405 I can fully acknowledge the existence of this bug. It seems to be reproducible. Bug#382697: kbd-chooser: Greek keyboard layout selection fails (Patch #2)
the attached patch, besides enabling iso-8859-7, disables those and should make it easier to re-enable them if needed. Let me know if you prefere this second patch attached to a separate whishlist bug. It is, by definition, a bit more invasive and it would be better if someone with all the skills in keyboard/console stuff (such as Alastair, Denis, Eugen) looks at it. I suggest committing the first patch (we are in near freeze time) and report the other one as a separate BR (with a big risk of being digged in a big load of dust, given the lack of maintenance of kbd-chooser). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#347720: Correction for description of the effects of this bug
I mixed two things up when I was submitting this bug. The effect of this bug is *not* that the module load order changes but that too many modules get loaded. The problem I had with this, apart from having a bloated initrd image, was that the USB driver on the affected box was causing severe hardware problems, blocking interrupts for other PCI cards, and the image created by mkinitrd would always load the USB driver module at boot time regardless of what I put into /etc/mkinitrd/mkinitrd.conf With the suggested fix, only those modules which are really needed at boot time are loaded. Package: pgf Version: 1.00-1 Followup-For: Bug #357255 Dear Ohura-san! I have prepared a package for 1.01, on the way fixing some bugs, here is the relevant Debian changelog entry: * add correct license statement into the copyright file and include the list of covered files FILES (Closes: #364749) * new upstream, fixing the compatibility problems (Closes: #357255) * restrict the dependency to tetex = 3.0, and add an additional dependency on texlive-latex-recommended (Closes: #357008) * adapt the debian files for the new location of the documentation files cleaned up the rules files from unnecessary commented dh_calls * fix the doc-base file to reference an existing pgfmanual.pdf * exclude svg files from being compressed, otherwise html documentation cannot be viewed (Closes: #360256) * bump standards version to 3.7.2, no changes necessary * change build-dep-indep to build-deps for dephelper * add a lintian override file for the pseudo extra license file usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/pgf/text-en/pgfmanual-en-license.tex.gz You can get the signed sources and binary files from deb(-src) http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ check/ I attach a diff between the debian files of 1.00-1 and 1.01-0.1. Further question I have: I want to kill the pgf, xcolor and beamer from the texlive packages and depend on your packages here. For pgf I have already added additional dependencies onto texlive (what actually do you need from tetex/texlive, I suppose xkeyval?). For xcolor nothing has to be done, as it does not depend on tetex in any way. For latex-beamer you added a dependency on tetex-extra. Could you tell me which sty files you actually need? I would suggest that you add an alternative dependency | texlive-latex-recommended (= 2005.dfsg.1-2) if this is done I can remove the respective files from the texlive packages, reducing duplication in the Debian archive. Can you remember which cupsys version you upgrade from? No, can't remember what version I upgraded, but I do upgrade/dist-upgrade minimum once a week. 1.2.1-4 to 1.2.2-1 has not any changes around debconf. 1.2.1-3 had a change because I added SNMP backend, but I can't believe it cause an error. * cupsys/backend: ipp, lpd, parallel, usb Maybe you know because you're using Unstable, dpkg-reconfigure cupsys and enable socket will back socket backend again. I know the command but haven't run this for a long time. The system was installed 6 years ago, upgraded to Unstable and hold up-to-date. I run the command and now I saw the choice to enable/disable available backends and in my configuration (or is it default???) the socket backend is not activated. I use this printer with the socket backend not very often, so maybe the backend isn't available since a longer time (since the last change around debconf??) and the last time I missed the backend, I created the link manually. Bug#381266: cups-driverd hangs
I had the same problem, but I've found a workaround for it. I was initially using gnome-cups-manager -- it would freeze for over 15 minutes with cups-driverd and cupsys eating 100% CPU, before I even got to see a list of printers. I did also try the web interface -- it did give me a list of printers, but failed to add anything. (cups-driverd was using 100% CPU.) BTW, I've found what looks like the same problem reported at http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-April/017291.html It magically fixed itself after I removed the following symlink: /usr/share/ppd/cups-transitional-dir - ../cups/model (Note the symlink: /usr/share/cups/model/ppd - /usr/share/ppd) It might be necessary to rm -fr /var/cache/cups at the same time. It now takes around ten seconds! I had tried rm -fr /var/cache/cups first, and I also reinstalled cups, but that didn't seem to have any effect. (Actually, removing the cache just seemed to make things slower. cups-driverd ended up using 100 MB either way, but it took a lot longer after removing the cache.) Bug#380520: acpid and hald conflict
severity 380520 serious stop I can reproduce this problem. If you remove hal, acpid can start without problems. It seems if hald starts after acpid, it works (or at least starts cleanly). But hald is started by udev, so it's hard to control that order sensibly. Now the problem is that for example powersaved needs both hal and acpid. powersaved is in turn used by kpowersave. But if you can't install the dependencies together, the whole group of packages becomes useless. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#377915: Can't change sample rate
Hi Günter, I can confirm this bug. It does not seem to affect the sample rate of jackd, only the display of the sample rate within the qjackctl GUI. You can see this in the attached screenshot, where jackd is running at 44100 Hz but the GUI shows 48000 Hz. You can also see this wrong figure in the Status window. A new upstream version 0.2.20 is available: http://qjackctl.sourceforge.net/qjackctl-dl1.html Cheers! Bug#384175: fglrx-kernel-src: Suggested reordering of installation methods in documentation
Package: fglrx-kernel-src Severity: wishlist Tags: patch A friend was installing the fglrx driver on his machine following the documentation provided (thank you!), and started following the instructions in the README.Debian file, without realising that the different methods (a to d) were exclusive and the preferred one was actually the _last_ one in the document. I propose the instructions be re-ordered based on their ease-of-use and likelihood of Just Working, so I put them in this order: a: module-assistant (was d) b: make-kpkg (was c) c: make.sh (was a) d: kernel makefile (was b) My main plan was to put the recommended module-assistant method first, I don't particularly mind if you disagree with my ordering of the other three methods :) The patch is a bit unclear because of the whitespace handling. I simply reordered them and reworded the paragraph before the four options.
