I tried it through what I saw as the default installation method, i.e synaptic (from the admin menu in gnome). Perhaps it is synaptic that somehow changes the defaults. (My comment still applies in revised form w.r.t. synaptic) I'm not completely sure that I really see the point here, sorry. I do. :-) I've added the missing stuff to tasksel. OK. So as this was indeed the only point that is really a bug (the suggestion to embark mirror IP addresses in the installer seems awkward to me and I think I gave a workaround in the BR, I hereby reassign the bug report to taskseland close it with versioning. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#385542: sendmail-program set incorrectly
Romain Francoise wrote: Sven Joachim [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Probably you should rather build-depend on exim4 | mail-transport-agent, since /usr/sbin/sendmail is what is actually needed. Perhaps I should think of the buildds and depend on the smallest package which provides /usr/sbin/sendmail since we just need it to be present... Or perhaps I should just keep the dependency out and patch paths.el in e-s to avoid this effect.. There's an even better possibility. You can override the auto-detected value from paths.el in site-init.el, which is loaded later during the dumping process. This is the method recommended in paths.el and the Emacs Lisp manual. See also debian-default-info-directory.dpatch which already puts something in site-init.el. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#269972: How to recognize that the install is a floppy install?
Quoting Joey Hess ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): I do think we should take care to only use this rarely. Making lots of paths that are determined by boot type will make testing harder, and help hide bugs. Yeah, I understand. Bug#385672: regression report- unlike prior versions, boot hangs unless noacpi =off on Toshiba Portege 7020CT
reassign 385672 kernel thanks Quoting Tony Godshall ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: debian-installer Version: 20060806 unlike prior versions, boot hangs unless noacpi =off on Toshiba Portege 7020CT (Intel Mobile Pentium II, 366MHz, 192MB RAM, 7GB hard drive) This would appear to be a function of the kernel version used, as 2.6.15 did not hang. Similar behavior was also observed when a beta-2 install was upgraded to kernel 2.6.16 Which actually means that the bug belongs to the kernel packages more than the installer itself. You might have a chance trying the 2.6.17 kernels which are currently only in Debian unstable. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Both the soname and the package name must be changed so that package management tools can avoid installing binary-incompatible libraries and applications. Anyways, even without a package name change, your dependencies are too tight. You can't even install videolink with libxul0d 1.8.0.5-3 in unstable. If you can assure me that a videolink package built against the current libxul-dev should be binary-compatible with every future version of libxul0d then I will remove the additional versioned dependency. I would love to do without the versioned dependency, but my current understanding is that you cannot provide this assurance. Why do you think I added an soname to libxul ? I'm using only the icq protocol. Jabber and MSN accounts are configured, but I'm almost always off line with them. I have no external plugins installed, but the history (Translated from german Verlauf) module is enabled. I actually had pretty much the same problem, but I was only using the MSN protocol. Bug#385650: tasksel: The kde-desktop task should list kaffeine(-mozilla) media player
[Joey Hess] Does kde not include a default media player? Well, I do not have complete knowledge about the KDE facilities, but as I see it, the default KDE do not include a media player of the same kind and quality as kaffeine. There is kscd capable of playing CDs, and konqueror can play music files, but for video and for administrating your music collection, I've tested a few tools, and currently landed on kaffeine. Note that some of the recent additions to the gnome task are because gnome currently has a few holes in their standard apps, so the kde task doesn't need to worry about filling those holes unless it has the same ones.. Right. Good point. I'll keep that in mind while I compare the packages in debian-edu and kubuntu with the kde-desktop task in tasksel. I suspect it will be useful to list a few packages directly instead of hoping 'kde' to pull them all in, to work better with CDs (or installations from CD) where the 'kde' metapackage is missing becaues there were not room for the entire KDE system. Bug#385685: Some investigations later...
After some investigations, it appears the Automatically save changes to session doesn't do what I thought it did. It actually saves in real time the changes to the current session, thus the current behaviour. Which means there are actually 2 different problems : - Unchecking the option should remove gnome-session-properties from the current saved session. It doesn't make sense to have it in the last automatically saved session. Since the only way to disable the mode is to launch the properties panel (well, you still can do it from command line or gconf-editor, but the only proper way is to go in the properties), gnome-session-properties is damned to appear in the session. - Somehow, after unchecking the option, the nautilus launch is different and opens a new ${HOME} window, which is not supposed to happen. Bug#367320: Patch available
retitle 367320 prelink: Add timestamps to logged messages tags 367320 patch stop I have written a patch that adds timestamps to the output of prelink through a -T command-line option. The patch is attached as prelink-timestamp.patch and has been sent upstream. Because the addition of the -T flag is required for timestamp-enabled output, the daily cron job in the Debian packaging has to be modified to enable the -T flag for all runs. See attached prelink-timestamp-debian.patch. I also decided it's not necessary to log starting and stopping messages because the prelink logfile is replaced on each run. I have retitled the bug accordingly. -Ted diff -ruN prelink-0.0.20060712/doc/prelink.8 prelink-0.0.20060712-new/doc/prelink.8 --- prelink-0.0.20060712/doc/prelink.8 2004-11-23 20:37:41.0 +1000 +++ prelink-0.0.20060712-new/doc/prelink.8 2006-09-02 19:45:16.0 +1000 @@ -141,6 +141,9 @@ When processing command line directory arguments, limit directory tree walk to a single filesystem. .TP +.B \-T \-\-timestamp\-output +Prefix output with timestamps. +.TP .B \-u \-\-undo Revert binaries and libraries to their original content before they were prelinked. diff -ruN prelink-0.0.20060712/src/main.c prelink-0.0.20060712-new/src/main.c --- prelink-0.0.20060712/src/main.c 2005-06-11 01:09:06.0 +1000 +++ prelink-0.0.20060712-new/src/main.c 2006-09-02 19:42:51.0 +1000 @@ -25,6 +25,7 @@ #include argp.h #include stdlib.h #include unistd.h +#include time.h #include prelink.h @@ -50,6 +51,7 @@ enum verify_method_t verify_method; int quick; int compute_checksum; +int timestamp_output; long long seed; GElf_Addr mmap_reg_start = ~(GElf_Addr) 0; GElf_Addr mmap_reg_end = ~(GElf_Addr) 0; @@ -97,6 +99,7 @@ {undo, 'u', 0, 0, Undo prelink }, {verbose, 'v', 0, 0, Produce verbose output }, {verify, 'y', 0, 0, Verify file consistency by undoing and redoing prelink and printing original to standard output }, + {timestamp-output, 'T', 0, 0, Prefix output with timestamps }, {md5, OPT_MD5, 0, 0, For verify print MD5 sum of original to standard output instead of content }, {sha, OPT_SHA, 0, 0, For verify print SHA sum of original to standard output instead of content }, {dynamic-linker, OPT_DYNAMIC_LINKER, DYNAMIC_LINKER, @@ -140,6 +143,9 @@ case 'v': ++verbose; break; +case 'T': + timestamp_output = 1; + break; case 'R': random_base |= 1; break; @@ -230,6 +236,20 @@ static struct argp argp = { options, parse_opt, [FILES], argp_doc }; +void print_error_prefix(void) +{ + time_t t; + char buf[20]; + size_t len; + + if (timestamp_output) { +t = time(NULL); +if (strftime(buf, 20, %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S, localtime(t))) + fprintf(stderr, %s , buf); + } + fprintf(stderr, prelink: ); +} + int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { @@ -237,6 +257,8 @@ setlocale (LC_ALL, ); + error_print_progname = print_error_prefix; + /* Set the default for exec_shield. */ if (! access (/proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield, F_OK)) exec_shield = 1; diff -ruN prelink-0.0.20060712/debian/prelink.cron.daily prelink-0.0.20060712-new/debian/prelink.cron.daily --- prelink-0.0.20060712/debian/prelink.cron.daily 2006-09-02 17:49:58.0 +1000 +++ prelink-0.0.20060712-new/debian/prelink.cron.daily 2006-09-02 19:56:57.0 +1000 @@ -10,6 +10,8 @@ exit 0 fi +PRELINK_OPTS=$PRELINK_OPTS -T + if [ $PRELINKING = no ]; then if [ -f /etc/prelink.cache ]; then echo /usr/sbin/prelink -ua /var/log/prelink.log signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

(that's foreground and background, for a total of 10,000 color pairs used). It appears that xterm advertises 32767 available colors, which obviously should be enough. However, since I doubt anyone really uses higher colors with aptitude, I'll limit it to only using the basic 8-color space for now as a workaround. It would work with ncurses using the extended-colors feature (which would make ncurses binary-incompatible). Hm, what are extended colors? Google mainly turns up logs of ./configure runs. It stores the color pair separately in an int rather than packed in 8-bits with the video attributes. Here's a typical (non-extended) definition for cchar_t from curses.h: #define CCHARW_MAX 5 typedef struct { attr_t attr; wchar_t chars[CCHARW_MAX]; #if 0 int ext_color; /* color pair, must be more than 16-bits */ #endif } cchar_t; Turning on the ifdef for ext_color makes cchar_t a different size, and WINDOW a different size. Bug#385702: w3m rejects valid cookies based on false assumptions
Package: w3m Version: 0.5.1-5 This cookie was rejected to prevent security violation. [wrong number of dots] W3m rejects cookies for domain.tld (versus subdomain.domain.tld) unless when tld is one of .com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .net, .org and .int. This is done on the assumption that others TLD follow the .jp domain.subtld.tld model: .co.jp for commercial sites, .ac.jp for academic sites, and so on. The reason to reject such cookies is to prevent malicious sites from putting cookies on whole subdomains, which would be akin tu putting cookies on the whole .com or .org TLD. But the assumption is wrong: a lot of country code TLD do not follow this policy (including .jp, nowadays), and the hardcoded list of generic TLD in w3m is incomplete. That makes browsing some sites very annoying, due to a lot of rejected cookies (each pausing for some time, if cookies are displayed), and sometimes impossible (if the site is badly written). The code is in cookie.c, lines 302 to 313, where the special_domain variable is used. For the record, in Firefox, the corresponding feature seems to be in toolkit/components/places/src/nsNavHistory.cpp (with a This should be moved somewhere else (like cookies) comment), near the end, with a hardcoded list of ccTLD with subtld policy. The complete hardcoded list is .uk and .kr. Therefore, the simplest would be to simply remove this test, and accept unconditionally cookies for domain.tld. I come to the same result in etch (jpilot 0.99.8-0.99.9-pre-20060518-1, what a version number! Perhaps you could simplify with the new ~ feature?). Anyway I close myself the bug, hoping it's OK for you. Have a nice week-end, Eric --

Bug#385705: evms-gui: crash when creating a segment
Package: evms-gui Version: 2.5.5-15 Severity: normal I start evmsgui, and choose Create - Segment. I choose DOS segment manager, sdb_freespace1. The configuration options dialog appears. I enter the segment size (54.9 MB). Now at some point of tabbing around the options in this dialog, evmsgui always crashes with evmsgui:11273): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkEntry - did not receive focus-out-event. If you connect a handler to this signal, it must return FALSE so the entry gets the event as well Gtk-ERROR **: file gtkentry.c: line 4965 (blink_cb): assertion failed: (GTK_WIDGET_HAS_FOCUS (entry)) aborting... Aborted I'm sorry but I haven't been able to determine exactly when this happens-- entering or leaving which specific option box. I like the new GTK2 gui, but unfortunately it has a lot of other problems, about which I'll file reports as I have time. This one is the most serious. Bug#384922: NFS insecure without support for squashing multiple groups
I will re-phrase the problem, this may be clearer for some people: The root_squash option is to protect from an evil root. Though group staff is root-equivalent, root_squash does not currently squash that group (for various reasons, the kernel not supporting such options being one). An evil root could become group staff on the client, not get squashed across NFS, then become root on the server: root_squash is defeated. Methods of exploitation, and ways to fix, were discussed already. I know this bug renders my systems exploitable as we relied on the default root_squash working, and never set non-default permissions on /usr/local or altered root's PATH. I beleive it renders many other systems exploitable also, but have no ways to test that hypothesis. Bug#385715: Manpage incorrectly states This command doesn't understand any command line parameters
Package: planetpenguin-racer Version: 0.3.1-8 The manpage for this version, as well as stable (0.3.1-2), under OPTIONS, incorrectly states that ppracer does not understand any command line parameters. Instead, it should give the command line parameters. Here is a list of ppracer command line parameters, with brief descriptions: -c config-file - specify location of ppracer config file, default: ~/.ppracer/options -f , something about setting the course -m , something about MaxFrames -a , setMode to auto, whatever that means -p , something about setting a vector position (This list may not be complete) There is no documentation for ppracer, as far as I know. These commands, therefore, are undocumented. However, their use can be found in main.cpp from the original source code. You can also experiment with them on the command line. Sometimes I get the first listed language, sometimes English, or the last one... Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems www.debian.org does something wrong, doesn't it ? Please a different server, such as www.de.debian.org. Can you still reproduce it? With Konqueror yes. Firefox is OK. Setting Languages=fr-fr,fr;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.5,en;q=0.3 in kio_httprc solves the problem on www.{it,fr,jp,de,}.debian.org (and others, I guess ;o). Yep, for me too. Does this mean the problem is fixed now for everyone and every server? I will update http://www.de.debian.org/intro/cn#konqueror to reflect this. I still get English pages without a Languages= line at all. But I think KDE should deliver the single default language in this case. Only if multiple languages are requested ~/.kde/share/config/kio_httprc needs to be modified!? Oh, about the bug report you pointed: the poster says he has only problems with w.de.d.o, not others. Aren't all sites exact mirrors? The poster is me :-) In the past I was able to reproduce it only with the German mirror, later I noticed the problem also in other mirrors and now it vanished!? I assumed it also depends on the web server which the Debian project cannot dictate on mirrors. Can other users please test konqueror? Jens

Bug#366094: Package documentation for libssp0 autoconf macro
I originally mistakenly sent this message only to control@ so the message didn't show up in the BTS. Here it is again. Matthias Klose wrote: could you prepare a README to be included in the package? I have written a brief README, attached. My first question when I originally downloaded libssp0 was how do I actually use it?, which is what I have aimed to answer in the README. I think it would be helpful to include the autoconf macros that can be used to check for SSP[1]. They can be found via a link from the main SSP web page[2]. I have spent some time improving the above autoconf macros. My changes are attached (as well as a full copy of the updated macros). The changes are: * Stricter language checking (C or C++) - Required for projects using both C and C++ * Adds GCC_STACK_PROTECT_LIB to add -lssp to LDFLAGS as necessary - I have found -lssp is sometimes required during linking * Caches all results - This is always nice to have. * Uses macros to ensure correct ouput in quiet/silent mode - Previously yes and no could have been printed erroneously. The updated macros have been sent to the original author (Tiago Sousa) and to Hiroaki Etoh. I hope this is helpful! [1] Autoconf macros: http://researchweb.watson.ibm.com/trl/projects/security/ssp/gcc2_95_3/gcc_stack_protect.m4.gz [2] Main SSP web page: http://researchweb.watson.ibm.com/trl/projects/security/ssp/ -Ted Stack smashing protection is a feature of GCC that enables a program to detect buffer overflows and immediately terminate execution, rather than continuing execution with corrupt internal data structures. It uses canaries and local variable reordering to reduce the likelihood of stack corruption through buffer overflows. Options that affect stack smashing protection: -fstack-protector Enables protection for functions that are vulnerable to stack smashing, such as those that call alloca() or use pointers. -fstack-protector-all Enables protection for all functions. -Wstack-protector Warns about functions that will not be protected. Only active when -fstack-protector has been used. Applications built with stack smashing protection should link with the ssp library by using the option -lssp. Would you please consider taking Ubuntu's lead and also providing a separate package sysvutils? http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/source/sysvinit Here's the list of programmes they moved to sysvutils (along with their manpages): -rwxr-xr-x root/root 12172 2006-08-31 22:35 ./usr/bin/last -rwxr-xr-x root/root 4208 2006-08-31 22:35 ./usr/bin/mesg -rwxr-xr-x root/root 10260 2006-08-31 22:35 ./sbin/killall5 lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2006-08-31 22:35 ./usr/bin/lastb - last lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2006-08-31 22:35 ./bin/pidof - ../sbin/killall5 sysvinit then depends on this package. upstart does too, and it provides the following binaries itself: -rwxr-xr-x root/root 52768 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/init -rwxr-xr-x root/root 26528 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/initctl -rwxr-xr-x root/root 26528 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/start -rwxr-xr-x root/root 24960 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/reboot -rwxr-xr-x root/root 31204 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/shutdown -rwxr-xr-x root/root39 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/sulogin lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/stop - start lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/status - start lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/halt - reboot lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2006-09-02 03:27 ./sbin/poweroff - reboot -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-2-amd64 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages sysvinit depends on: ii initscripts 2.86.ds1-15 Scripts for initializing and shutt ii libc6 2.3.999.2-12 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libselinux1 1.30.26-2SELinux shared libraries ii libsepol1 1.12.24-1Security Enhanced Linux policy lib ii sysv-rc 2.86.ds1-15 System-V-like runlevel change mech sysvinit recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' : proud Debian developer, author, administrator, and user `. `'` http://people.debian.org/~madduck - http://debiansystem.info `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing systems signature.asc Description: Digital signature (GPG/PGP)

Bug#383964: Bug: dspam adds additional newline to message body when processed with LMTP
Hi, and sorry for not having replied earlier, I did not receive your first answer. Here are some details about my config. In dspam.conf: ServerMode standard Preference signatureLocation=headers In the first instance Postfix side's master.cf: smtp-scan unix- - y - 2 lmtp -o lmtp_data_done_timeout=1200 -o lmtp_send_xforward_command=yes -o disable_dns_lookups=yes I did notice some (a very few) of my incoming emails did not have the extra newline, but couldn't see any reason to that (same encoding, content-type, etc -- both were coming from eBay in this case). I was able to reproduce this by simulating a LMTP session (telnet to the DSPAM port and send an email by hand; bug reproduced successfully each time).
