Bug#394775: Sparc64 install fails: 'sbcl.sh install-clc' segfaults
Hello, Let me first thank you for the bugreport, it is pretty clean and complete. On Monday 23 October 2006 01:51, J.P. Larocque wrote: The stack trace produced below probably doesn't convey any meaningful information. gdb does not work well with lispy environments I fear. This means that it is getting a segmentation fault and thinks that it hit a 'guard page'. That page is placed just before you would overrun the control stack and if something writes to it you get a sigsegv. The handle_control_stack_guard_triggered function should then print a warning and offer the posibility to continue. It seems unlikely that the sigsegv comes from the control stack. I fear that it just gets the sigsegv because it is trying to use a memory region it cannot use. Bug#396241: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#396241: login: Executing su cause an invalid pointer error
Christian Perrier wrote: I almost picked an RC severity for this bug, but did not (for now) because I can still login using ssh. Thankfully you didn't as this obviously doesn't happen on all systems, mine first. Yeah, I thought so, otherwise it would have been seen before. So, the question is: what is so special on *your* system that it happens there. Nothing that I know or can think of. It is a relatively large Dell server, with a pure testing install with no backport (except for the ones I picked from unstable and which were close to entering testing anyway) or local packages installed. I'll keep looking (strace, etc), but I reported the bug in case someone had seen this before with some configuration... Bug#396226: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#396226: samba: Messes up file permissions when POSIX ACLs are
Package: samba Version: 3.0.23c-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable For you probably but up to now, we hadn't much reports that it is for other users We are running Samba 3.0.23c on Debian. Over the weekend, we updated out file server to Debian's kernel 2.6.18. We had previously never run a kernel with ACL support enabled. Since the upgrade, we are seeing very strange permission behavior. It appears to berelated to POSIX ACL support in Samba. It seems that what's happening is this. We have a number of files that are user/group writable (permissions 0664). When a user that is someone other than the Unix owner of the file writes to it, the permissions switch to 0474 (-r--rwxr--) and an ACL is added with this second user getting read/write permission to it. Unfortunately, the Unix owner of the file now is locked out of writing to it. We never had any problem with permissions on these files before using the ACL-enabled kernel. Well, first of all, the smb.conf would help a lot, here signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#396331: upgrade-reports: sarge to etch removes kernels
Package: upgrade-reports Severity: important Upgrade went well, except for one rather big problem. If I do a straight aptitude -f dist-upgrade, it removes kernel-image-* (IE, kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686; I didn't try a 2.4 installation-upgrade). Now, I understand why older kernels must be removed for etch (udev, etc), but this is probably a problem for the average user. For the release notes, I would recommend the following procedure: 1. Edit sources.list 2. apt-get update 3. aptitude -f install linux-image-2.6-[arch] 4. dpkg --purge hotplug 5. reboot 6. aptitude -f dist-upgrade Installing the new kernel first means the old kernels will be removed, udev will be installed, only a few necessary packages are upgraded (libc6, etc), and a new, hopefully working kernel is installed in its place. The user can then reboot and verify the new kernel works before completely upgrading to etch. Of course, if the new kernel DOESN'T work, the user doesn't have anything to fall back on, but at least he knows early on. Bug#392823: ITP: prayer -- fast IMAP-based web mail system with few dependencies
retitle 392823 ITP: prayer -- fast IMAP-based web mail system with few dependencies owner 392823 Magnus Holmgren [EMAIL PROTECTED] thanks I've sent some questions and comments upstream. Most notably, * Prayer assumes that folders can't contain other folders, even if the IMAP server supports it. It appears that Dovecot with Maildir doesn't work very well with Prayer - all folders are treated as directories. Directories are containers for folders and other directories, but can't contain any mail. I don't know if this is an unavoidable problem with libc-client, or just a design mistake in Prayer. Anyway Prayer probably works best with UW-imapd. * Currently, there is no IPv6 support. However, prayer-session uses libc-client to connect to the IMAP server, and IPv6 support can be acheived there by building with the version of libc-client currently in experimental. * The modified UTF-7 encoding isn't supported, which means that non- ASCII characters in folder names won't work. -- Magnus Holmgren[EMAIL PROTECTED] (No Cc of list mail needed, thanks) pgpMqPgb32rbi.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#196363: partial docu patch
#171244 contains a patch which documents dhclient's -lf and -pf switches. On a releated note - Sam Eloy: do you still maintain this? Maybe orphaning the package would send a clear message to the user base, Eloy? Or adding a big fat severity important bug to the package saying - people this package is obsolete, please migrate to dhcp3? Or providing an empty package that depends on dhcp3-client for migration? Anyway, I do like dhclient, it's nice and small and easy to use, I guess Sam liked it for the same reasons too... Well, I hope you'll use the patch to make dhclient better documented... And thanks for the maintenance anyway!!! *t -- Tomas Pospisek http://sourcepole.com - Linux Open Source Solutions -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#396295: openssh-server: scp copies filenames with extended characters in the wrong character set, or sshd does not know about local locale for filenames
severity 396295 wishlist thanks On Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 02:08:54AM +0200, Wouter Van Hemel wrote: Package: openssh-server Version: 1:4.3p2-5.1 Severity: minor If you copy files from one system to another with scp, the filenames don't always end up in the expected character set. For instance, when files are copied from a iso-8859-(1/15) locale machine to a machine with UTF-8 locale, the filenames show up unreadable to local console and X programs. The openssh server probably needs to be aware of the local locale; but that will probably not solve the case where one user's locale differs from the system locale, unless the character sets happen to be rather compatible. Am I missing an easy way to make sure filesnames are stored with local locale settings (in non-interactive login sessions such as scp)? Filenames historically haven't really had an encoding in Unix; they're just byte strings that may or may not happen even to be representable in your current locale. Messing with this in scp would open all sorts of interesting cans of worms (what happens if the filename isn't representable in the target encoding? what if you normally set your locale only for interactive login sessions, so the locale apparent to scp will be different? etc.). Dealing with this is exactly the sort of thing that isn't going to be done in scp, which cannot be significantly extended (http://www.openssh.org/faq.html#2.10). It may be possible to extend sftp to do this. If draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer ever gets out of the Internet-Draft status, it will provide a mechanism for filename translation (see section 6 of ftp://ftp.nordu.net/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer-13.txt). However, doing this in advance of the standards process would cause interoperability problems. In the meantime, I suggest recoding the filenames after the fact. A rename(1) script could do the job, such as: rename 'use Encode; Encode::from_to($_, iso-8859-1, utf-8)' Cheers, -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. So this bug could affect more than gdm; the reported but never really tracked down issues with wordlist selection questions could also be caused by this. I came up with the attached patch, which I've tested to work, and which seems to make perfect sense to me.. Looks entirely correct to me, and I'm glad you spotted that. Not sure why I did it this way to begin with; it's possible I simply hadn't quite got the hang of debconf's object model yet. This could also explain #393427, although I think the workaround (adding a Default) was correct anyway. Bug#396337: Acknowledgement (check_tcp: check_tcp (check_pop) fails on some specific +OK messages)
Hi Again It looks like we have been able to quite exactly figure out what goes wrong. From Kernel 2.6.17 on, the tcp_window_scaling code was changed. found on: http://inodes.org/blog/2006/09/06/tcp-window-scaling-and-kernel-2617/ Linux starts with very small packets. Our POP +OK string is exaclty 47 bytes long and split into two reads: 46 bytes + 1 byte check_tcp apparently fails if a read is split into multiple reads and terminates thos two reads with \0 and overwrites the first 46 bytes by terminating them with \0 after the lenght of the second read, thus leaving something like +O or even shorter remaining in the buffer. If the string is shorter everything is OK as it fits into one read. If the string is longer, the overwriting happens after the +OK and again the check is OK. Bug#396071: segfaults when attempting to take a screenshot while wget is running

Inmediately after that, you see [2], and after a console switch, the d-i logs [3]. Known issue and the reason why the screenshot button is disabled when a progress bar is running. Apparently we are disabling the screenshot button too late here. Reassigning to cdebconf-gtk-udeb as that is what causes the crash, and it would be good to investigate the actual cause of the crash and seeing if we can solve that. Disabling the button was only a workaround. Note that in the mean time we may need to fix this in choose-mirror after all by displaying a progress bar at this point. Accessing the GdkWindow by a thread while the window is being updated by another thread in the gtk_main_loop() causes crashes, and this is the reason why i made the screenshot button disappear during a progress_xxx() call, in fact past experiments aimed at gaining exclusive access to the gdkwidow led to deadlocks between threads. Robert, did you press the button before the progressbar was displayed or were you able to press it while the progressbar was running? When I pressed it no progress bar was being displayed. I don't know if one was going to show up eventualy, but it was taking too much time and in fact the system appeared to be hang because of this. I've been able to reproduce the crash as Robert described it. The problem is that i forgot to disable the screenshot button when exiting from a frontend_go(), like i did for the next and back ones. When the user clicks back or next, the GTK application exits the gtk's main loop and there the callback function associated to the screenshot button, which is still active, causes the crash as expected. This is also the reason why i disabled the screenshot button while a progessbar is being updated: the callback would have arrived between two progress_xxx() calls, outside gtk main loop. The attached patch fixes this bug: the screenshot button is disabled after the user exits from a questions, and a bit earlier than before to prevent possible nasty timing issues. cheers attilio Index: gtk.c === --- gtk.c (revisione 42389) +++ gtk.c (copia locale) @@ -1661,6 +1661,10 @@ gdk_threads_enter(); +gtk_widget_set_sensitive (data-button_prev, FALSE); +gtk_widget_set_sensitive (data-button_next, FALSE); +gtk_widget_set_sensitive (data-button_screenshot, FALSE); + if (data-button_val == DC_OK) { call_setters(obj); @@ -1679,9 +1683,6 @@ else gtk_widget_destroy(questionbox_scroll); -gtk_widget_set_sensitive (data-button_prev, FALSE); -gtk_widget_set_sensitive (data-button_next, FALSE); - gdk_threads_leave(); if (data-button_val == DC_OK)

Bug#395052: Please provide the GTK frontend with a better handler for BOOLEAN questions
Hi Here is a cleaner patch for this bug: don't feel impressed/scared by the number of changed lines, it's mostly due to re-indentation of code after removing a couple of if()s. This patch was tested by me during the whole past week and worked well. Aurélien, would you be so kind to suggest this upstream? No, upstream is not active anymore and does not care. Is it also my fault? Come on, please... Please don't try to read me wrong. If anywhere, the fix belongs upstream; I didn't knew upstream was dead, and I don't know hfsplus' upstream, so I suggested you might forward it (instead of, say, me). If it's dead, I suppose it makes you upstream for it, and it's nice you could merge this. (I'm noting this here in case Aurélien didn't read my reply on IRC.) Again, adhominem stuff... Like if I never answered people on IRC... Like if I did not maintain my packages... Instead of bashing me like the evil NM which I am not, would you be so kind to sponsor this upcoming upload? ;) Please don't try to read me wrong. I noted this here because I wanted my efforts to counter-verify your claims to be documented and not wasted, so that other persons don't have to do it again, and to get fact straights. I never said you don't reply on IRC, but you didn't seem to be very open-minded with this bug report to begin with, so I feared this bug might sleep needlessly. It seems your upload doesn't need sponsoring anymore, but I would have sponsored it, of course. Thanks for applying the patch, -- Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#396028: Core dumps on start (alpha)
severity 396028 normal retitle 396028 Fails to start on machines lacking FQDN and visible_hostname merge 396028 299431 thanks Hi Falk, squid needs a 'name' for the instance. It could get it from the hostname or from the configuration file. Configuration file setting takes precedence on the system hostname (this is needed to be able to override system-wide settings) and thus is impossible to ship squid with a default visible_hostname setting. The installation process takes information provided by the administrator to set a proper hostname on the machine. If something fails in this process (because of an human error or a program error), the machine is left with no hostname and squid fails to start since it cannot work properly. There are two solutions for this: - fix the hostname setting of the machine - override missing hostname information in squid configuration file Neither of them can be done at the package level, since this is not a package bug. A better search in the BTS for squid would point you to bug #294431, which is exactly the same bug as this. I'm now downgrading severity of this bug since it can be resolved easily with a minor configuration change (and it doesn't make squid 'unusable'), retitling it to something more insightful and merging it with the previous bug. Bug#396365: please add a gdb .udeb, for easier debugging inside d-i
Package: gdb Severity: normal Tags: d-i A version of gdb as .udeb, which could easily be loaded inside the d-i would be very useful for developers. This would come in handy to debug various bugs which are otherwise hard to track, like crashes in the graphical installer, or problems like i am having right now, in parted/libparted, which only are apparent inside the d-i environment. Bug#396094: Openoffice writer 2.0.4 crashes when saving under .doc format
Hi, Jean Baptiste Balleyguier wrote: Why don't you just include reportbugs info. I.e. just use reportbug? I'm not sure I understand what you say (or write)... reportbug package is the way to report proper bugs. It embeds some info about whiversions, which arch etc.. Ok, now I'll use this... Every odt or just one? Having made some tests...it seems it was only one document...so I'm sorry... finally it's not an openoffice bug. What makes you think that? I.e. what did you find out? I think I found the little bee : the file is taken from the web (copy-pasted from a Zope/Plone-based site). It contained some images and tables : I deleted all, but it continued to crash. It also contained some links : I deleted them, and the doc saved well... maybe a problem with links ?
