Bug#414242: vserver-debiantools: please add instructions how to remove vservers
Package: vserver-debiantools Version: 0.3.4 Severity: wishlist Hi, there is no documentation how to remove a vserver. The following procedure worked for me: vserver VSNAME stop rm -rf /var/lib/vservers/VSNAME rm -rf /etc/vservers/VSNAME Perhaps some instructions should be added to the manpages of the creation scripts: newvserver(1), dupvserver(1). There is a minor bug in the manpages: newvserver(1), dupvserver(1) have a reference to the nonexistant util-vserver(1). Bug#414243: arts: First start resets Treble/Bass settings of the sound card
Package: arts Version: 1.5.5-1 Severity: normal When I switch my machine on for the first time and login to KDE, as soon as arts starts it resets Treble and Bass settings to the default 50/50, no matter what I've set them to before. This only happens the first time arts is started on the machine for each reboot. I've narrowed it down to arts because I can login to the console before logging into KDE and set the Bass setting. Then I examine the output of while true; do amixer get Bass out; ps ax out; sleep 1; done. Conspicuously, arts starts the second before Bass goes from (eg) 40% to 50%. What's weird is the fact that this only happens once each time the machine is started. If I set the Bass setting to something else, kill and restart artsd, it doesn't touch the setting. It's only when artsd is started for the first time that it resets the Bass and Treble. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-powerpc Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages arts depends on: ii libarts1c2a 1.5.5-1aRts sound system core components ii libartsc0 1.5.5-1aRts sound system C support librar arts recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#413469: Please don't, there are people using it
Quoting Steve Langasek: After discussing on IRC with Joey and other ion users, it seems that there isn't really much demand for ion3 in a stable release after all; those I've talked to who use ion3 all say they run testing or unstable on their desktops, and Joey notes that the ion3 upgrade path from sarge to etch isn't likely to be a smooth one anyway. So under the circumstances, it does seem reasonable to defer to upstream (and the former maintainer) on this point. I've tagged the ion3 package and its reverse-dependencies for removal from etch. This is quite unfortunate for me. I, for one, am using officially packaged Ion3 on current stable and intended to use Ion3 also in upcomming Etch. For me (* my 3 machines) and about half a dozen of my friends this will be a serious step back to Ion2 (scratchpad is a must). I can't be bothered to install all those development packages just to compile the curent versions - I'm just a user. Is it certain that this bug affects 2.6.18? Have you tested your patch against the current etch kernel, to be sure that it's still applicable? Certainly, the kernel message you quoted is no longer present in the source. Bug#414250: multipath-tools-initramfs: superfluous addition of /bin/readlink
Package: multipath-tools-initramfs Severity: minor Hi, forgive the nitpicking, I just found that the copy_exec /bin/readlink /bin/ line in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/multipath_hook emits W:copy_exec: Not copying /bin/readlink to $DESTDIR/bin//readlink, which is already a copy of /usr/lib/klibc/bin/readlink and I guess it'll always be the case, as readlink is one of the klibc binaries, which mkinitramfs unconditionally links into /bin. Bug#413447: [php-maint] Bug#413447: Etch upgrade divide php-pear into several packages without warning
hi, On Sat, 2007-03-10 at 01:51 +0100, Aurélien Le Provost - Ribaltchenko wrote: i'm curious how you found yourself in this position. currently in etch there is a php4-pear package which depends on php-pear plus all of the modules that used to be contained by php4-pear (php-db, etc). btw, php-log was never part of php4-pear, and was a seperate package (php4-pear-log). Yep but the sarge to etch upgrade I decided to upgrade from php4 to php5. Despite the php-pear replaces php4-pear ( 4:4.4.0-0), it only depends of php5-cli | php4-cli, php5-common, not php-db, php-log etc. These packages should at least belong to the package recommendx. i think it's a valid request to add them to recommends, so i'll do that before closing this bug. but still, those packages should have been installed as part of your dist-upgrade, unless: did you remove the php4-pear package before upgrading? Yes : as I said I decided to switch to php5, so for me it's mean purge all php4 package since I will not use them anymore. Also, when I do dist-upgrade and that I see a package or many which will be removed, I stop and purge it. that's why the packages aren't installed. in etch/sid, php4-pear is the transitional compatibility package responsible for ensuring that php-db etc are installed. see: http://packages.debian.org/testing/web/php4-pear which also hints at the reasons for the package split. i'm pretty sure that the dist-upgrade wasn't going to remove php4-pear, and that it was some over-zealous purging on your part :) for future reference, i think that upgrading/dist-upgrading first, switching to php5 second, and purging third instead of all three at once will help you avoid such potential problems in the future (if you purged php4* after the upgrade instead of before, you'd have installed all the php-pear packages). you should probably file a seperate bug report against this to the php-log package, which is maintained by someone outside the debian php maintainers group Okay, I will make it in the days coming. thanks. also, any packages which depend only on php-pear but not the specific packages (maybe the package that led you to all of this) should have their dependencies updated too. sean signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

(I'm ignoring Peter Köllner's bug report [x] here for once, since that one has possibly to do with xinetd and thus should be fixed separately.) What whould be illuminating would be thus to be able to reproduce the bug which could be helped by knowing from which version those gents were upgrading from. So please Kent, Ben, Leonardo, Norman, Mind Booster, Daniel, Uwe, Mike an Luke - could you tell us from which openbsd-inetd (or xinetd or netkit-inetd) you were upgrading from? Bug#394821: mga_drv unresolved symbols after 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge2 upgrade
Brice Goglin wrote: Hi, Did you have a chance to try checking/reinstalling your X packages as I said before? Hi Brice, Thanks for the follow up. The problem was only resolved by installing driver package from Matrox. It overwrote the mga_drv driver within the X libraries area, and then X would start. Prior to that I had tried building the package from debian sources and every angle I could think of. I know that months before that, I had problems with switching video cards from nvidia to matrox. In that case, a proprietary nvidia library was getting in the way of making GLX work for Matrox. I may have installed the Matrox prop. driver way back then in attempts to overwrite this, and then this required working with the matrox driver from here on - breaking only when X was updated. I'm sorry I don't have more details. I have a lot of systems to take care of and my desktop is probably the least important of them, so I probably don't take as much note of what I do there. Hi, is there any news on this issue ? Bug#218615: xserver-xfree86: Crash in Return To Castle Wolfenstein causes mouse pointer to hang.
Hi! Brice Goglin schrieb: Since the problem occurs with Xorg, I should reassign this bug a xserver-xorg package. But, it looks like you're running the non-free nvidia driver. Could you try to reproduce with any free driver? If not, I am afraid we will not be able to help and you'll have to complain to nvidia. If so, the bug won't be nvidia specific and could probably be reassigned to xserver-xorg-core. ---Zitatende--- I don't think I'll be able to reproduce the bug, because I'm not playing 3D games at the moment and I don't intend to. Also the bug won't be reproducible for me with a free driver, since 3D games do not run on those (at least not with usable speed). I'd need different hardware for that. In the meantime I was running an ATI card for a while (on the old hardware, because the nvidia card had snuffed it) with free drivers which did *not* show that particular bug. I also was not able to reproduce the bug under circumstances unrelated to games (i.e. other 3D applications, such as fluxus) as yet. It appears it has to be fullscreen 3D. Bug#413469: Please don't, there are people using it
This is quite unfortunate for me. I, for one, am using officially packaged Ion3 on current stable and intended to use Ion3 also in upcomming Etch. I can't be bothered to install all those development packages just to compile the curent versions Why do you want a random broken and unsupported development snapshot? Can't you wait until a stable Ion3 is released (not that far away -- might even happen before Etch is released, depending on how things proceed), and install it by whatever means? Why can't people trust the upstream to decide, when the software is stable, and insist on using (mega)frozen development snapshots? -- Tuomo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#412778: no support for pic12f635, problem with multi-confword chips
Yesterday, I have received the pic12f635 samples. So, I have done some testings. I have applied the chip definition for the PIC12F635-patch by Alexander Zangerl, but that patch doesn't seem to work for me. This is what I get: | pts/5 jan ~/picprog.12f635/picprog-1.8.3$ ./picprog --pic /dev/ttyS1 --output /tmp/pic1.hex | Picprog version 1.8.3, Copyright © 2006 Jaakko Hyvätti [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Picprog comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details | type `picprog --warranty'. If I add the -d pic12f635 option I get: | pts/5 jan ~/picprog.12f635/picprog-1.8.3$ ./picprog --pic /dev/ttyS1 -d pic12f635 --output /tmp/pic1.hex | Picprog version 1.8.3, Copyright © 2006 Jaakko Hyvätti [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Picprog comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details | type `picprog --warranty'. However, If I remove the pic12f635 from my programmer, it gives the same result (no error like chip is missing). So, I doubt that reading the pic12f635 is really working for me. I have also tested it with piklab-prog http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=387703. With piklab-prog, reading the pic seems to be working fine, so I think I have correctly connected the pic12f635 with my programmer ;-) | pts/5 jan ~/picprog.12f635/picprog-1.8.3$ piklab-prog -d 12F635 -p direct -c read /tmp/testpic.hex | Piklab version: 0.12.2 (rev. distribution) | programmer: direct | device: 12F635 | Using port from configuration file. | Connecting Direct Programmer on Serial Port (/dev/ttyS1) with device 12F635... | Set target self powered: false | Connected | Read id: 12F635 (rev. 4) | Reading device memory... | Read memory: Configuration Bits | Read memory: User IDs | Read memory: Calibration | Read memory: Code memory | Read memory: Data EEPROM | Reading done Piklab-prog does give an error¹ when I remove the pic12f635 from my programmer. So, at the moment I have no idea how to solve this problem. But I'll try to take a closer look at this problem the coming days. Bug#414180: zabbix-server dies after mysql-server restart
Hi, On Fri, Mar 09, 2007 at 07:46:42PM +0100, Patryk Dawidziuk wrote: Zabbix-server dies if mysql-server is restarted. Here's dropped into logs when above: this bug is known by upstream, search the forum for the whole discussion on the issue. Will be fixed with the 1.4 series. I dont know if there is a chance to backport the changes to 1.1.x. according to 1.3.3 beta released, I only see darkness in this matter ;) If it's hardly possible to backport fix to 1.1 series, I'd rather write custom watcher as cron task and add it to a package. Say, once a minute check if there's a zabbix-server running and restart it if it doesn't. We prefer to work in sync with the cyrus team, and in my estimate, if the bug indeed renders package unusable, then the original cyrus package and indeed all cyrus installations anywhere would be equally unusable, so I wanted to hear what they think about that. Well, the justification here isn't that the package is unusable, but that the bug causes data loss. You probably know better than I do if this same bug is present in cyrus. I think the issue is actually only applicable to some specific situations that use quotas and the quota configuration is either unusual or even corrupted. But I don't have enough experience to judge that. Quota corruption is not the fault of the package, but if it leads to data loss, that's a problem. Where exactly is the data lost anyway, though? The bug report only says that lmtpd segfaults; it's not clear to me how this results in data loss. LWP, the web library you're using, provides a subclass of UserAgent that respects the robots.txt protocol, see here: http://search.cpan.org/dist/libwww-perl/lib/LWP/RobotUA.pm So you just replace two lines, and you've got a version of websec that respects the robots.txt protocol (I just did that on my websec install). The only design issue is that a robot UA requires a 'from' email address and I'm not quite sure how to supply that. I'd use the destination address(es) for the reports, but that's probably not a good idea with respect to privacy. What do you think? ciao, -- [*Thomas Themel*] That which is novice-friendly is too frequently [extended contact] expert-hostile, and vice versa. Bug#414188: CMake version for etch
Could you bump the cmake version on etch to 2.4.3 or 2.4.5 before it becomes stable? No, that is in the hands of the release team. And 2.4.5 is waiting in unstable and would be used by any future cmake-using packages. During a discussion of KDE 4 build requirements, I mentioned that the current version in etch was 2.4.4-1, and that etch would probably move to stable RSN. In reply, Alexander Neundorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] said that there were some serious issues with 2.4.4 and that it couldn't become stable. Note that the Debian diff to cmake 2.4.4 does address these issues: + * Have FindMPEG2 look in paths used in Debian (Closes: #391831) + * Make FindQt4 more reliable (Closes: #392473) I've asked him for more details, so I can test and then file a bug, but I figured I'd give you a heads up immediately, since you appear to be the package maintainer. A bug has been filed. #414188 Note that it has already been downgraded, since 2.4.4-1 seems to function for Debian systems, as 16 other Debian packages build with it. Any finding of your test should go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, -Maitland -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#391309: RFP: gnome-app-install - the easiest-to-use software installation tool available
Hi folks, I'd like to get gnome-app-install in Debian ASAP, preferably under pkg-gnome co-maintenance. I would like to benefit of your efforts to Debianize the Ubuntu package, but there were newer versions of the package in Ubuntu addressing some of your TODOs mentionned in #391309 (at least the Python policy stuff). Would you one of you two (or you two) be interested in being the official Debian maintainer(s) with the GNOME team as uploaders? Do you have time to prepare the package right now? I would like to import the package in pkg-gnome ASAP, perhaps starting with the Ubuntu version and merging any Debianization changes you did; if you're interested in maintaining this package, I can start with the import and give you commit rights to do the merging. Please let me know if you're not interested in maintaining the package; in all cases, I'm interested in any help to integrate the latest version of the package (0.3.26) with Debian. That's the same kind of patch that I proposed for Blender, and it allows the build on various FreeBSD kernels (some months ago, 5.x series were used, nowadays, we have 6.x and in experimental, 7.x is warming up), that's the reason for the use of startswith(). It would also be fine if you could suggest upstream to add a check for the second hunk, since here it defaults to GNU/kFreeBSD, but that could be misleading for the porting on other platforms. Bug#414271: wodim should detect when the device was mounted
Package: wodim Version: 9:1.1.2-1 Severity: minor When I tried to blank the CD-RW, I've got the following repeating message from wodim: Error trying to open /dev/cdrw1 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying in 1 second. That was because I've mounted CD-RW couple of days ago and forgot to unmount it. But it took me 15 minutes to understand that this wasn't a bug in wodim but a bug of mine :) Considering that such things like KDE+pmount can automatically mount inserted CD-media, it would be very good to detect this and show the user more informative message telling that device must be unmounted first. Otherwise new Linux users would be unable to diagnose the problem and to burn an optical media. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (200, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-xen-686 Locale: LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages wodim depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcap1 1:1.10-14support for getting/setting POSIX. Bug#386469: openbsd-inetd: action start failed
Just had the same problem, this time on a Debian testing system, instead of unstable as I had before. As someone mentioned this, I purged netkit-inetd (still had its conf files, etc.) to see if it helped, but it didn't. Again, simply stopping openbsd-inetd made it possible to upgrade. This is openbsd-inetd version 0.20050402-5. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
