Bug#422973: lsb: General update after the debconf review process
Dear Debian maintainer, On Sunday, April 22, 2007, I sent you a notification about the beginning of a review action on debconf templates for lsb. Then, I sent you a bug report with rewritten templates and annoucing the beginning of the second phase of this action: call for translation updates. Translators have been working hard and here is now the result of their efforts. Please consider using it EVEN if you committed files to your development tree as long as they were reported. The attached tarball contains: - debian/changelog with the list of changes - debian/control with rewrites of packages' descriptions - debian/templates with all the rewritten templates file(s) - debian/po/*.po with all PO files (existing ones and new ones) As said, please use *at least* the PO files as provided here, preferrably over those sent by translators in their bug reports. All of them have been checked and reformatted. In some cases, formatting errors have been corrected. The patch-nopo file contains a patch for the templates and control file(s). Please note that this patch applies to the templates and control file(s) of your package as of Sunday, April 22, 2007. If your package was updated in the meantime, I may have updated my reference copybut I also may have missed that. This is indeed why I suggested you do not modified such files while the review process was running, remember..:-) It is now safe to upload a new package version with these changes. Please notify me of your intents with regards to this. There is of course no hurry to update your package but feel free to contact me in case you would need sponsoring or any other action to fix this. -- patch.tar.gz Description: Binary data --- /home/bubulle/travail/debian/rewrite/TRANS/lsb/lsb.old/debian/templates 2007-04-18 06:53:23.623858500 +0200 +++ /home/bubulle/travail/debian/rewrite/TRANS/lsb/lsb/debian/templates 2007-05-09 07:33:10.548696904 +0200 @@ -1,19 +1,25 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# for an advice to [EMAIL PROTECTED] +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: lsb/shadowconfig Type: boolean Default: true -_Description: Should shadow passwords be enabled? - The Linux Standard Base requires that certain features of adduser(8) be - available to conforming applications (such as password aging). Bug#426990: 'test' builtin of bash returns wrong value for '! -a FILE' operation
Package: bash Version: 2.05b-26 Though I have not tested for the stable version, I am afraid this bug still exists in the latest version because I cannot find any related bug on the BTS. Not only Debian (oldstable) but the latest Suse has the same problem, and I am afraid this is a very widely-spread unfixed bug... Please try % bash -c 'test ! -a . echo true' and compare with the result of % bash -c '/usr/bin/test ! -a . echo true' . The '[' builtin has the same problem, as expected. What is interesting is that the results of % bash -c 'test ! -z foo echo true' and % bash -c '/usr/bin/test ! -z foo echo true' agree to each other. Bug#426944: multiple requests in one report
(One suggestion is that it could accept install as well as --install, for more consistency with apt-get. And a -s for simulate would also be appreciated.) That's two wishlist bugs - I'm personally not convinced that supporting -i|--install|install is worthwhile because apt-cross commands and options do not always overlap the similar apt-get commands and options. The two programs are related, of course, but I do not think it is wise to make apt-cross mimic apt-get commands and options. apt-get is intended for use with an entire distribution; apt-cross is only to make foreign libraries and headers available to a cross-compiler. The manpage makes the point that apt-cross cannot and should not seek to be capable of installing or maintaining an entire cross install. Making apt-cross too similar to apt-get would only increase the confusion about the purpose of apt-cross. At this time, I do not think that 'install' should be supported, only --install or -i. (Note that empdebuild {emdebian-tools} *does* mimic the underlying pbuilder code and use the same options in the same way. That is because it calls unchanged pbuilder functions directly from /usr/lib/pbuilder/foo and it has been explicitly designed to be as close to pbuilder and pdebuild as possible. Where there is clear overlap, I would support use of the same commands and options but I do not think this applies to apt-cross.) The --simulate (the -s and -S options are already taken) option could be added at some point in the future but there is a code rewrite planned after DebConf so --simulate would have to wait until then. More likely will be a --yes option and modified behaviour in --install so that when the list of packages has been calculated, the user is shown the list of packages and prompted to confirm installation. The --yes option would override the prompt and provide the current behaviour. i.e. the default would be --simulate or at least --interactive. I think that is a better plan, overall. That is also similar to apt-get, again raising the need to ensure that users are clear on how apt-cross differs from apt-get. (I've added that to the upstream TODO file so there is no need to file a wishlist bug about that.) === main bug report === So the bug is that for unstable and testing it seemed to automatically download the package files while for stable it didn't. apt-cross isn't in stable. There are bugs in the dpkg-cross framework in stable that are fixed in lenny and some bugs in lenny that have been fixed in sid. At this time, apt-cross cannot realistically support stable just as it cannot support oldstable. The next release will depend on dpkg-dev = 1.14 (via dpkg-cross = 1.38) as a result of more of these fixes which will make installation on stable impractical. However, I need to see the output requested below before I can work out why --update was not triggered in your case. And/or, that without the package files it printed only a very terse message, not no packages files, please run apt-cross --update. (The message has already been fixed upstream.) Here is the contents of my sources.list, exluding commented-out lines, in case it is relevent : Actually, considerably more useful is the output of: $ apt-cache policy Please excuse me if I am doing something stupid (or if you consider my expectations unreasonable!), and thank you for this excellent tool. I wouldn't go that far but I think there are reasonable limits on what apt-cross can actually support and etch just isn't quite at that level. That said, there is a difference between running apt-cross on unstable / testing and querying stable and trying to run apt-cross on stable directly. So a few requests for clarification please: $ cat /etc/debian_version $ apt-cache policy Have you got similar content in ~/.dpkg-cross for stable as you have for testing and unstable (judging just by filenames and file sizes)? What is the content of ~/.dpkg-cross/stable/lists ? -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ pgp6dC7LyITem.pgp Description: PGP signature

* G. Milde [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-06-01 09:02]: On 31.05.07, Jörg Sommer wrote: Pigeon schrieb am Thu 31. May, 13:18 (+0100): Package: jed I request that the save file y/n exit prompt should be altered to y/n/cancel, with the cancel option returning you to the editor. I would refuse to add such an option, because the common way to cancel actions is ctrl+g, which works with quit. Maybe some documentation in a prominent place (say README.Debian) would help to make new users aware of the mechanism. In Jed, (almost all) actions can be aborted by pressing a configurable abort character or calling the function kbd_quit(). The most used default abort character is `Ctrl-G'. Some emulations use a different default: CUA: `Ctrl-D' (and, if activated, ESC, see cua_escape_cmd()) Wordstar: `Ctrl-6' Good idea. Could you commit the changes to SVN? -- Rafael

Bug#408271: fai-server: fai-setup and make-fai-nfsroot: make /srv/tftp/fai configurable
Hi Thomas, Not quite sure if I already sent you this before but this whishlist bug is incomplete without it: Currently fai-chboot tries to read $NFSROOT from /etc/fai/fai.conf. But to support both i386 and amd64 on the same server it would be nice to have a commandline switch to specify the path to the nfsroot, for example: fai-chboot -D /srv/tftp/fai/i386/pxelinux.cfg -FI -R /srv/fai/nfsroot/i386 HOST fai-chboot -D /srv/tftp/fai/amd64/pxelinux.cfg -FI -R /srv/fai/nfsroot/amd64 HOST Otherwise one has to edit the pxe-bootfile in /srv/tftp/fai/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/... after running fai-chboot. Hi I'm using nvidia beta drivers 100.13.06 now. Earlier if I remember correctly I was using the stable 9755 drivers with the same results. I've installed the drivers with nvidia installer. Bug#427001: drupal5: trouble creating postgres DB tables after install
Package: drupal5 Version: 5.1-1 The README.Debian.gz file does not explain how to create database tables for drupal. My suggestion is to add documentation, to avoid the process I went through: After installing drupal5, I tried to access my new site, and got errors such as: Warning: pg_query() [function.pg-query]: Query failed: ERROR: relation access does not exist in /usr/share/drupal5/includes/database.pgsql.inc on line 125 Warning: ERROR: relation access does not exist query: SELECT CASE WHEN status=1 THEN 0 ELSE 1 END FROM access WHERE type = 'host' AND LOWER('10.5.5.7') LIKE LOWER(mask) ORDER BY status DESC LIMIT 1 OFFSET 0 in /usr/share/drupal5/includes/database.pgsql.inc on line 144 Looking closer, I found that the drupal5 database has no tables. I can log in with psql -U drupal5 -h localhost drupal5, using the password in /etc/drupal/5/sites/default/dbconfig.php , so it appears that the database exists and user access is configured correctly. I checked /usr/share/doc/drupal5/INSTALL.pgsql.txt for hints on setting up the DB, but it only explained the parts I had already verified as working. It does not mention loading a schema. So, I checked upstream sources. The INSTALL.txt in the upstream source says to create DB tables simply by loading the site's front page in a web browser, then clicking Database Configuration. I just get errors on the front page, so there is no link to follow. Asking on #drupal-support, I found that the correct URL is http://mysite/install.php So, I tried that URL, and got a different error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 23040 bytes) in /usr/share/drupal5/modules/node/node.module on line 1692 Oops, I had the default PHP settings, which apparently are too restrictive. So, I changed the limit to 40M, reloaded the page, and got a drupal is already installed error. Fair enough; the previous attempt got killed. So, I dropped/recreated the DB and tried install.php again, and it worked. Bug#426166: Perhaps be more explicit about creating a separate file
I like this suggestion, but I had to read it three times to see that you actually mentioned putting these commands in a file. Perhaps this could be a little bit more explicit? For newbies, it might also be useful to say a word or two about how to create a useful name for the file (I personally add .local to all my own files in /etc/modprobe.d, for example). Also, I'm afraid /usr/share/doc/module-init-tools/FAQ is not a visible enough location for this information. Perhaps even a patch against the modprobe.conf manual proper could be considered? /* era */ -- If this were a real .signature, it would suck less. Bug#375922: running mktexlsr/updmap/fmtutil at the end of a dpkg run (was: texlive-*)

Evtl. aber nicht bei einem manuellen Abbruch durch C-c, reboot o.ae. Das ist dann allerdings ein User-Problem. Waiting in the background until dpkg.lock is removed might indeed be an alternative. To make sure dpkg knows that configuring failed, one could call dpkg-reconfigure $known-to-fail-package. Not that I think we will have time to implement this soon, but if someone else wants to implement a patch... I'm forwarding this to the bug, just in case. Bug#423298: mercury: should this package be orphaned?
I'd like to adopt the mercury (and mercury-docs) packages, unless someone more qualified wishes to do it. I've been using Mercury on Debian (i386 and amd64) for some years now, and want this easily available to other Debian users. I am not a Mercury developer, but the feedback I've had from the devs is It's fine by us if I adopt the package. I've also had some feedback from the previous maintainer. Some years ago, I contributed to the MacOSX (powerpc) port of Mercury, so I have some knowledge of the build system. I would not be able to make any significant changes to the code, but could pass relevant bug reports back upstream. I am also not a Debian Developer, so I will be seeking a sponsor at some point to do package uploads. My plan would be to package numbered releases of Mercury only (currently 0.13.1) which would deal with bug #281369 and this bug, and to have Mercury depend on an appropriate version of gcc (Mercury is very fussy about gcc version) which would deal with bugs #297217 and #381813. Note that this is very early in the process - I have not yet constructed any packages (there's a learning curve there), but thought I'd get this out early so as to avoid any risk of duplication of effort - if someone else is looking at doing this, please let me know! I'm not sure what the point is...is it merely cosmetic? Because if it is, cr_X is not that nice either. Also, the default crypto install uses LVM which greatly increases the risk of other lines with line wraps anyway. Finally, if we add persistent device names along the line of /dev/disk/by-something/* that will also increase the risk. So unless someone explains to me in which way I've misunderstood this, I'm inclined to close the bug report. -- David Härdeman -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#427025: python-fuse: README.Debian talks about compiling fuse.ko despite it's now included in vanilla kernels
Package: python-fuse Version: 1:0.2-pre3-2 Severity: normal Hello. Subject says all: the fuse.ko module is now part of vanilla kernels, so giving instructions about how to compile it in README.Debian is useless and confusing. I think it'd suffice to say that the module must be loaded, that the user must belong to the 'fuse' group, and that the module can be automatically loaded on boot via /etc/modules. I think that about a month or 2 ago after dist-upgrading my unstable machine I was stuck with some libc postinst issue. As I recall, I simply went back on libstdc package, and it started to work again. Then after couple of days I did another dist-upgrade, and had no problems, so I assumed it was a one-off build issue... However, we can easily work on it... Please contact me directly, and we can start banging on it, chroot'et or directly... As to the elara/europa kernel - it looks to me like a mine hand-rolled kernel built in 2005 on my other machine (Windy). We can start replacing the kernels as you wish...
