Bug#416273: slapd -Not starting if ldap logs exist

2007-06-02 Thread Russ Allbery
tags 416273 moreinfo
thanks

If I attemp to run slapd while /var/lib/ldap/log* files exist, it fails
to start while inicialising DB. The only way to start slapd is to delete
 the log* files first.

This generally indicates a permission issue. If, for example, you run
slapd as root and then later try to run it as another user, or if you
change what user you're running slapd as, you need to change the ownership
of all of the files in /var/lib/ldap to match the user you're running
slapd as.

Could you check and see if that's the problem that you're having? (And
was this also the source of the problem you reported in #416272, to which
I just responded?)

The slapd comes with init scripts. However, the scripts don't work, they
don't start the server. Simply starting slapd works well.

Could you be a little more specific? What happens when you run the init
script? They work fine for me, so it's hard for me to fix this problem as
described.

  It does sed (...) -e s|%includedir%|$(includedir)| (...)

  I put 2 %includedir%'s in one line...

As a workaround, I'd suggest you to use pkg-config instead.

I won't fix this bug before taking care of stable security updates.

pkg-config has a different semantic and it probably doesn't have info
about every single component shipped by xulrunner.

For instance getting the include dir for cookie component, how can i
achieve that. With xulrunner-config I would do

   xulrunner-config --cflags cookie

Except for the javascript and nspr components, which has their own
pkgconfig file, all components use /usr/include/xulrunner/$component
(as you can see in the xulrunner-config file). For instance, epiphany's
configure script just gets /usr/include/xulrunner from a pkgconfig file
and adds the component to it.

Anyways, that's just another broken way to do it.

Bug#341832: Please check the presence of DB_CONFIG file for BDB backend

2007-06-02 Thread Russ Allbery
Experience told me that it is very important for BDB backend stability
to have a DB_CONFIG file in the database path.

I modified a bit /etc/init.d/slapd so that it checks the presence of
this file. Please find attached the patch.

I'm not sure if this is still worth doing or not with the current package.
OpenLDAP will now write out a DB_CONFIG file for you based on the dbconfig
options in slapd.conf if you have them, and the current slapd.conf for any
new installation includes those options. Also, the package will write a
DB_CONFIG file by default for new installations *and* for any installation
in which we have to dump and reload the database.

So this warning would only be for people with old configurations and old
databases but who haven't upgraded through an upgrade that requires
dumping and reloading the database. That seems like a fairly small set of
people.

I suppose the check and warning doesn't hurt anything, but I'm kind of
ambivalent about committing it.

Currently, any debconf-updatepo call changes that field, which clutters svn

As it is now recommended to run debconf-updatepo in the clean target of
debian/rules, that also clutters logs on revision control systems.

Please consider not changing this when nothing changes. Of course, that
may mean requesting for such change in msgmerge..:-)

Package: po-debconf

The current debconf-updatepo command systematically changes that header to
the content of the Maintainer: field

This has the consequence of changing the field when Ubuntu and other derived
distros change that Maintainer field (for Ubuntu, this is on Debian's
request!). So, possible reports about incorrect English will then go to the
derived distro BTS and not to Debian.

This also has the consequence of cluttering Ubuntu diffs with PO files
changes and makes the maitnainer's work more difficult when we want to merge
Ubuntu changes in.

Bug#426697: iptables: Iptables incorrectly determines length of chain names in -N or -j

2007-06-02 Thread Allard Hoeve

Dear Laurence,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not checking for any newer Debian
releases. I (stupidly) asumed this would be an etch box, while in fact it
still is a sarge box with backports.

I'll try to backport the etch version to sarge. We're not quite ready to
upgrade the firewalls yet.

Regards,

 Searching for ó however works.

Hi,

do you have a sample file containing these characters so that we can
reproduce the issue?

Please note that if the file is generated by TeX, some European fonts
are virtual fonts, in which such characters are obtained by combining
two other characters.

Bug#424989: local swap option should scan LVM as well as normal partitions

unfortunately, /proc/partitions does not provide information about which

type being set to swap.

i'm hesitant to implement a feature that scans each and every device for
a swap signature(which wouldn't even work if encrypted swap was used),
which would be required to look for lvm devices. obviously, lvm related
tools would also have to be present for any such code to work.

Sorry, I am not in a position to offer a patch.

without a patch, and the above concerns, i'm marking this as wontfix.

if someone can come up with an elegant patch that addresses the above
concerns, of course it would be reconsidered.

live well,

I try to copy several songs from my winodws fretsonfire under the

Thx for your work

Bug#427163: libthread-pool-simple-perl: FTBFS: tests block

2007-06-02 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Package: libthread-pool-simple-perl
Version: 0.23-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

libthread-pool-simple-perl's tests sometimes go into a deadlock when
running inside fakeroot.

This can be reproduced by running:
~/libthread-pool-simple-perl-0.23# while fakeroot perl t/2.t ; do true; done

The place where it blocks differ each time. For example, I just got it
to block at the following places:
ok 33
ok 12
ok 1 - use Thread::Pool::Simple;
ok 901

stracing the sleeping process gives the following results:
* futex(0x525624, FUTEX_WAIT, 1, NULL
* futex(0x75f3b4, FUTEX_WAIT, 1, NULL
* futex(0x525624, FUTEX_WAIT, 9, NULL
I also got it to block in an msgrcv call, but I couldn't reproduce this
right now.

I could reproduce it:
* in an up to date sid i386 chroot running with an amd64 kernel, on a
  2-CPU system, using fakeroot
* on an amd64 system, 2-CPU system, using fakeroot (without any chroot
  involved)

I could NOT reproduce it:
* on my laptop (i386, single CPU), even using fakeroot
* without using fakeroot, on amd64

So, I think that it is related to
  fakeroot AND (smp OR amd64)

Or maybe it's related to a specific kernel version. My laptop runs
2.6.21-1-686, while the AMD64 I tested it on are running 2.6.18-3-amd64.

I don't have access to an i386 SMP or an AMD64 UP system to investigate
further.

Bug#357032: Please make a symlink for the documentation

2007-06-02 Thread Manuel Pégourié-Gonnard

Package: latex-beamer
Version: 3.07-1

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

texdoc beamer shows a catalogue page with following link to the doc :
a href=../../../macros/latex/contrib/beamer/doc/beameruserguide.pdf
that is, to
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/doc/macros/latex/contrib/beamer/doc/beameruserguide.pdf

The problem is, beameruserguide.pdf is not in this place. I suggest, to
make a symlink from this place to the actual location of the file :
/usr/share/doc/latex-beamer/beameruserguide.pdf.gz or to change whatever
you want to correct this broken link in the local TeXcatalogue.

This documentation-not-available-to-texdoc problem is a violation of
Debian TeX sub-policy, see

http://people.debian.org/~preining/TeX/Debian-TeX-Policy/ch5.html#s-sec-documentation
and could be easily fixed.

Bug#425292: unable to find kdcraw executable

2007-06-02 Thread Mark Purcell
IMHO we should move the kdcraw to /usr/lib/libkdcrawapi/kdcraw. I've
got the okay by upstream for this change. My first try to tweak auto*
magic accordingly failed last week, but I've managed something similar to
kdebluetooth-dbus-integration pkg this week end, so I'm confident that
 get the libkdcraw change in.

Achim,

Thanks for your followup.

I agree with you if we can get digikam to look for kdcraw under libkdcrawapi/
I've upload libkdcraw-runtime in the meantime, so that we have something that
works, but once we can get your changes in, then we can change to ship
kdcraw with the libs and depreciate the libkdcraw-runtime package.

Mark

Bug#425985: extended description doesn't describe package

2007-06-02 Thread Mark Purcell
Filipus,

Your report seems to contain two statements of fact, rather than a bug report.

1. speex-doc package description doesn't say it contains binaries/ libraries.
2. short description for speex, libspeex1 and libspeex-dev are the same.

Yes I agree. But what would you like fixed?

Do you really not know what the speex-doc package provides:

Package: speex-doc
Description: Documentation for speex
Unlike other codecs like MP3 and Ogg Vorbis, Speex is specially
designed for compressing voice at low bit-rates for applications
such as voice over IP (VoIP). In some sense, it is meant to be
complementary to the Ogg Vorbis codec.

Mark

On Fri, 25 May 2007, Filipus Klutiero wrote:
Contrary to other speex packages, speex-doc doesn't contain something
 like

This package contains the encoder and decoder command-line applications.

in its description. It only contains the common paragraph.

Note that other speex packages have identical short descriptions.

Bug#423839: liferea: Not fixed at all

2007-06-02 Thread Javier Kohen
Package: liferea
Version: 1.2.15b-1
Followup-For: Bug #423839

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The bug wasn't really fixed. According to powertop Liferea is causing about 160
wakeups-from-idle per second on my system, which is between 20 and 35% of the
total. That's even more than an amule with ongoing uploads and downloads (only
80 wakeups).

Strace shows that it's polling every second or so and calling gettimeofday 31
times! in between polls (coincidentally 31 is the number of feeds I have in
Liferea). This happens while idle; the update monitor shows no activity.
Moreover, when working in offline mode gettimeofday is not abused anymore, but
Liferea still polls about two times per second.

Rather, since your package contains dynamically-linked ELF objects, you
should be using ${shlibs:Depends} in your control file.

Thanks your advice, I'll do so.

No problem, will add that. But, it seems to me that iceweasel should
provide: mozilla-browser or mozilla-firefox or something like that.
After all, it is a mozilla-family browser, and it does provide an
executable in /usr/bin/firefox.

So how far is packaging going? If you do not want to take it anymore,
then better get the wnpp bugreport closed, so others can package it. I
have an already working package lying about for months now .. and I am a
bit disappointed at the moment, since your package is still not in sid.

If you need help / further assistance, do not hesitate to ask.

So should kaffeine or libxine1 depend on libxine1-plugins?

i have a working kaffeine using just libxine1.

btw, libxine1 suggests libxine1-plugins. And libxine1-plugins says:
Depends: libxine1, libxine1-ffmpeg, libxine1-gnome, libxine1-kde,
libxine1-console

This empty package is just for your convenience and depends on all
available xine plugin packages.

there's something else not just a missing dependency on libxine1-plugins.

Mark: maybe we must recommends at least libxine1-ffmpeg and libxine1-kde ?

cheers,

Fathi

Please can you give me some examples of failing Java source and command

Bug#427171: knetworkmanager hangs when querying kwallet during session start up

2007-06-02 Thread Kevin Goeser

Package: network-manager-kde
Version: 1:0.1-2
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
When knetworkmanager is loaded by the KDE session and queries kwallet,
the password dialog pops up. But the dialog says, that konqueror or
DCOPServer wants to access the wallet. After entering the password,
knetworkmanager hangs.

This might be related to bug #406162 - however, the behaviour is
somewhat different. Like in bug #406162 I need to kill knetworkmanager
and start it again.

Some lines from .xsession-errors, which may be relevant:
===
QInputContext: no input method context available
kded: WARNING: Application 'konqueror' using kwallet without parent window!
QInputContext: no input method context available
(...)
QFile::open: No file name specified
evolution-alarm-notify-Message: Setting timeout for 46222 1180821600
(...)
evolution-alarm-notify-Message: Loading alarms for today
(...)
Very strange! got a DCOPReplyDelayed opcode, but we were not waiting for
a reply!

===
 - no message by knetworkmanager until it is restarted.

This is quite annoying, since it happens every time you start KDE.

The attached backtrace has been created by attaching gdb to the hanging
knetworkmanager pid.

Mono, Gecko, Firefox, somethingFox, XulRunner it crashes in gecko which

Bug#427172: xorg: no dependency of xorg to xorg-docs

2007-06-02 Thread Steffen Moeller
Package: xorg
Severity: wishlist
File: xorg

Hello,

the chain of dependencies from x-window-system - xorg - xorg-docs
installs the considerable number of PDFs that I do not consider necessary
for a regular user. The xorg-docs should be recommended, but not on the
depends line IMHO.

Should I oversee something then I suggest to split the docs into
essential documentation (which then possibly should be with the server
iself) and the extended documentation.

Best regards

Steffen

Bug#426393: libcurl3-dev depreciated (was: Bug#426393: asterisk: uninstallable due to dependancy on libcurl3)

2007-06-02 Thread Mark Purcell
Dear libcurl team,

When you depreciate libcurl3-dev all downstream dependant packages require
at least a rebuild, if not a reload to change the Build-Depends: from
libcurl3-dev
to libcurl4-dev.

At the minimum, could you send a courtesy email to all downstream packages (Cc:)
so we know we need to upload after your library transition. Best option would be
for you to file a bug report against those packages which will require a reload
after your library/dev transition. Otherwise the users will trickle bug reports
(attached) through to individual packages...

Thanks,
Mark

Hello,

I've just updated to icedove 2.0.0.0-4 for AMD64 as is present in Sid
at the moment, and can confirm that this bug is no longer present. It
looks like there are still three architectures without icedove 2
available, so I'm not sure what the procedure is here, but I'd be happy
to vouch for the bug being fixed in AMD64 at least.

Hello,

This bug appears to be partially fixed in 2.0.0.0-4. Now, the message
displays properly when re-opened (ie there is no difference in the
display when the message is opened from the IMAP server to if it is
opened from a saved file).

However, the problem with opening the attachments at the bottom still
remains. Since this main part of this bug no longer exists, I thought it
would be sensible to clone this. That way, this bug can be marked as
done and the new bug used to track the remaining issues. I'll arrange
for this to happen, then update the new cloned bugs with information on
the remaining problems.

All the best,

Hi. Just a quick THANK YOU

I've just tested this: removed all the custom setting I had for my ALPS
touchpad from the xorg.conf, and it works perfectly. Major step forward!

Cheers,

Bug#427161: Should recommend iceweasel too

2007-06-02 Thread Barak A. Pearlmutter
Well, I just checked : iceweasel provides www-browser, and so does
every www browser in debian (except netscape for some reason, and
mozilla* package, since they all depend on some ice* package now).

But maybe it's not the right thing to depend on for djvulibre-plugin
since i guess it's useless with links. Perhaps the better thing
would be a graphical-www-browser virtual package, but surely this
 doesn't exist.

Right, www-browser, or a hypothetical graphical-www-browser, wouldn't
suffice. What is really needed is mozilla-plugin-compatible-browser.
I'd assumed this was what mozilla-browser is really supposed to mean,
but perhaps not.

So thank you for adding iceweasel, and, I forgot, maybe you should
add iceape-browser too for the same reason.

Done in CVS; you can see it on sourceforge which also holds the
debian/ stuff. I will wait for some more substantial changes before
duploading it.

Bug#427178: donkey-bolonkey: locks computer hard with mga driver.

2007-06-02 Thread Sune Vuorela
Package: donkey-bolonkey
Version: 2001-1
Severity: normal

12:19 * pusling looks at tarzeau how do I_make donkey-bolonkey not turn
off my monitor and render my computer unresponsive ?
12:20 tarzeau pusling: i can't reproduce this, what allegro version do you
have? what x version? all sid?
12:20 pusling tarzeau: yeah. updated sid
12:20 tarzeau pusling: for sdl i know how to make non-fullscreen, for
allegro you gotta ask sam or look at the source yourself?
12:21 tarzeau pusling: i386?
12:21 pusling tarzeau: i386. no allegro installed
12:22 tarzeau pusling: it doesn't fail here? if
(set_gfx_mode(GFX_AUTODETECT, 320, 240, 0, 0) 0)
12:23 tarzeau or maybe here init_graphics(); ... can you still use the
computer after the unresponsiveness? what x driver?
12:23 pusling mga driver. I haven't something else available so I can check
ssh. - but my amarok keeps playing
12:25 tarzeau pusling: maybe your x driver don't support 320x240 with 8bit
color? which is something any vga card should be able to do
12:25 tarzeau pusling: can you try using the vesa driver?
12:26 tarzeau pusling: or replace the GFX_AUTODETECT with
GFX_AUTODETEC_WINDOWED
12:26 tarzeau pusling: and rebuild it
12:26 tarzeau pusling: or i build it you test it?
12:26 tarzeau pusling: and then we add a -f (fullscreen) and -w (window)
modes
12:29 * pusling installs vesa
12:29 tarzeau i think #349837 is closed by gtamsanalyzer.app can someone
affirm?
12:30 tarzeau pusling: that'd just be the bad workaround... but yes i wonder
what happens
12:30 tarzeau pusling: if you don't want to build it, tell me i'll make you
a new deb
12:31 tarzeau pusling: works in window mode here... :)
12:32 pusling tarzeau: with vesa driver I get a nice little window that says
donkey bolonkey with moving donkeys. I think it works with vesa. but yes. it
is a ugly workaround.
12:34 tarzeau pusling: can you try the windowed version, here's the link
http://cow.ethz.ch/donkey-bolonkey_2001-1_i386.deb
12:39 pusling tarzeau: the windowed version seems to work with mga driver
12:40 tarzeau pusling: so the problem is changing the resolution and
colordepth (i dont' guess you have 8bpp,256 color)?
12:41 pusling yeah - it is not the resolution or color depth I use normally
,)
12:41 pusling (and I don't have it in my xorg.conf either)
12:41 tarzeau pusling: doesn't matter, xorg calculates it
12:41 tarzeau pusling: wait, your monitor gets out of sync?
12:41 tarzeau pusling: that happens when you have the wrong frequencies of
your monitor in the config
12:41 pusling my monitor just gets turned off as with no signal
12:42 tarzeau pusling: oh
12:42 tarzeau pusling: can i see your xorg.conf ?
12:43 tarzeau pusling: what says your monitor manual for Horizontal and
Vertical frequencies?
12:43 tarzeau pusling: or you tell what your monitor exactly is?
12:44 pusling I unfortunately don't have my mointor manual anymore - but the
values in my xorg conf is set with those when I had it
12:46 tarzeau pusling: can you try HorizSync 28-50 instead of 28-80 ?
12:46 tarzeau pusling: what size is the monitor? who the vendor? model?
12:47 pusling 19 - some old ibm.
12:47 tarzeau pusling: yes try what i suggested then
12:48 tarzeau pusling: more than 1280x1024?
12:48 pusling I run 1600x1200
12:48 tarzeau k try it, worst thing that can happen is it don't work and
then you change back
12:55 pusling I tried changid horizSync - my X got totally skewed - but I
tried the archive version of donkey-bolonkey - and had to hard reset my machine
again.
12:55 tarzeau pusling: ouch :(
12:56 tarzeau pusling: i'm not sure where the problem is, i think i got some
mga machines at work (sarge though- can make them etch), i can try it there
12:56 tarzeau pusling: feel free to file a bug report against it with the
details we foudn out here?
12:56 pusling it is a mga 550 if it matters ;)
12:57 tarzeau we also got those, and 450s.. but i think what matters more is
monitor and x version, x config
12:57 tarzeau pusling: so hard lock means, sound keeps play, you can't ssh
into it, and keyboard no react, like num-lock, ctrl-alt-backspace or f1?
12:59 pusling I have no other machine to try to ssh into it from currently.
13:00 tarzeau pusling: i have :)
13:09 pusling tarzeau: what severity do you want the bug with ?
13:09 tarzeau pusling: i'd use normal, but you can pick any you want
13:11 pusling tarzeau: I will just quote stuff from our talk here in the bug
report? ;)
13:11 tarzeau pusling: that's fine
13:12 tarzeau pusling: would you be happy to change screen resolution with
xvidtune -next and/or ctrl-alt-+- then run it in windowed mode (i mean i add -w
and the bug is fixed)?
13:12 pusling tarzeau: if -w was set by default, yes. (so I don't lock up my
computer accidentally just because I miss a -w)

Barring that, how about shipping an executable script

The license does not allow for anything like that, I'm afraid.

We could ship that in libx11-6, then. *shrug*

Bug#254999: slapd: postinst conflicts with daemontools (should also conflict with runit)

2007-06-02 Thread Toni Mueller

Hi Russ,

On Fri, 01.06.2007 at 16:45:32 -0700, Russ Allbery [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 #SLAPD_SENTINEL_FILE=/etc/noldap

(Debian really needs a more automated way of doing things like this, but
that's a larger discussion that won't resolve soon.)

If the other OpenLDAP package maintainers agree, I'll implement this.

I'm almost entirely running things like slapd through runit these days,
so a sane runit starting environment would imho be good (chrooted + hdb
by default). If you have a suggestion for a good place, I'll be
probably able to contribute such a thing, but this doesn't interact too
well with logcheck (different formats etc.).

Otherwise, I'd assumed that just having a variable like

START_SLAPD

in /etc/default/slapd

similar to what SSH or other packages have, would imho be sufficient.

Best,
--Toni++
