Bug#450579: squared qjackctl toolbar icon appears in the middle of my screen instead on the iconbox

2007-11-08 Thread Tatiana de la O
Package: qjackctl
Version: 0.2.21-1ubuntu1
Severity: minor

Hi there thanks for the program.

When using it in my xubuntu distribution, with xfce desktop system,
however, there's a bit of an annoyance with the icon: it appears in
themiddle of my screen, not in the bottom-right as all the other icons
I have (pidgin, skype, ekiga, notes...).

I think this can be fixed

Thanks

Tatiana

Bug#450574: Does not read /usr/share/vim/addons/ but /var/lib/vim/addons/

2007-11-08 Thread Markus Fischer
Package: vim
Version: 1:7.0-122+1etch3
Severity: normal

The directory /usr/share/vim/addons/ is never considered by vim to be
parsed upon starting. Using strace I discovered that only
/var/lib/vim/addons/ is considered. It seems /usr/share/vim/addons/ is
either obsolete or /var/lib/vim/addons/ should be a symlink to
/usr/share/vim/addons/ .

 Hi Lucas,

 I know that the bug report was generated (semi-)automatically, but just
 FYI, gnustep-ppd is already slated for removal (bug #446190), hence this
 bug will not be fixed.

Actually, most of the process is made by hand :-) I noticed that the
package was scheduled for removal, but since sometimes, removals can
take a long time, I decided to file it anyway.

Bug#448158: more information

2007-11-08 Thread Ondrej Certik
 OK, so petsc seems to be ok now. I am going to try libmesh. Please
 don't close this issue yet - there could be other problems with
 g77/gfortran and maybe the proposed fix is not really a fix (i.e.
 causes other problems). Need to check libmesh out first.

I was able to compile libmesh, with the help of upstream, the
preliminary packages are here:

http://debian.certik.cz/

When compiled in the upstream tree by hand, it seems to work, when
used from the Debian package
it fails, but the problem seems to be libmesh related, not
petsc/openmpi related.

I also built python-petsc4py, the package is also available at the
link above. You can try it:

$ apt-get install python-petsc4py
$ python
Python 2.4.4 (#2, Aug 16 2007, 02:03:40)
[GCC 4.1.3 20070812 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-15)] on linux2
Type help, copyright, credits or license for more information.

Another transport will be used instead, although this may result in
lower performance.
--
 A=Mat()
 A.createSeqAIJ(1000)
Mat object at 0xb5ee98ec (0x82cac40)

So it seems to work, but the ugly warning/error messages seems to be
openmpi related. I am going to ask on the debian openmpi mailinglist
about it.

Let's leave this issue open until all these errors are either
resolved, or we are sure they are not petsc related.

Ondrej

Bug#450585: wine-bin: wine immediately crashes with most X servers

2007-11-08 Thread Alexander Buerger
Package: wine-bin
Version: 0.9.44-1
Severity: important

I have problems running wine which are somehow related to the X server.
On one computer, wine crashes when run under vnc4server while it works
when logging in from my terminal (which has an old ATI 3D Rage IIC card)
via ssh. On my amd64 laptop it does not run neither with fglrx 8.40.4
nor with vesa.

The program I need to run is LISE++
(ftp://ftp.nscl.msu.edu/pub/lise/LISE++/open_lise++_8_0_36.zip,
LISE++.exe). This has been working the last time I used it about three
months ago. But also winecfg does not work now.

On the ia32 computer (with vncserver) the error message is:
=

Bug#450573: OpenOffice cannot open file over NFS

2007-11-08 Thread BERTRAND Joël

Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.2.1-10
Arch: powerpc32, sparc
Severity: important

Hello,

	I use a NFS server (sparc64) and some clients (sparc64, powerpc32). All
home directories are on NFS server. With OpenOffice 2.2.1-8, all clients
can open files over NFS. With 2.2.1-10, OpenOffice freezes.

	All server and clients run uptodate debian/testing. NFS works fine, and
I can open all files when OpenOffice directly runs on server.

Any idea ?

Regards,

JKB

Hello. I'm running Synaptic 0.60+b2 and I was not able to make it remember
not to consider recommended packages as dependencies. Briefly checking
Synaptic's source seemed to indicate that the program is checking the value of
APT::Install-Recommends.

By adding:

APT::Install-Recommends false;

to my apt.conf file; I managed to make Synaptic behave. I suppose those who
wish Synaptic to *DO* consider recommended packages as dependencies should add
the following line to apt.conf in ${APTCONFDIR}:

Bug#450583: xtightvncviewer: scrollbars take realestate, but geometry can't be resized to compensate for lost realestate

2007-11-08 Thread Tim Connors
Package: xtightvncviewer
Version: 1.2.9-21
Severity: normal

I am trying to view a very wide screen on a machine with a taller but
less wide screen. Naturally, this causes xtightvncviewer to display
scroll bars. Alas, by adding a horizontal scrollbar, this takes 15 or
so pixels from the vertical size, so it needs to add a vertical
scrollbar as well. If I try to get the window manager to increase the
vertical size of the vncviewer window, vncviewer refuses to increase
its height. It will happily allow a decrease in height, so it appears
to have encoded the maximum window size to the size of the framebuffer
being displayed, without adding the necessary number of pixels that
are taken up by a scrollbar if displayed.

Thank you for the report.

However, the bug has been fixed in 5.16.00 and upward. See for
example

  deb http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root unstable main non-free

(packages are available for i386, amd64, mips, hppa)

The problem was, that the configure script looked for GSL version number
in of the form X.Y (where X and Y are single digits), which will fail
for the current GSL 1.10 in Debian.

A new set of packages should be uploaded to experimental soon.

Bug#403237: wxwidgets2.6: Suggestion for moving forward

2007-11-08 Thread Ron

*sigh*

Hamish, I'm sure you mean well, even with what looks like a bogus return
address[1], but please, do a bit of homework if you actually want to help
here...

I'm sorry, but it is hard to take any suggestion for moving forward
seriously when it comes from a view that quite plainly neither knows
where we are, which direction we are facing, nor the strength or
direction of underlying currents.

So I'll point out a few landmarks for you, but I'm repeating myself here,
and that _clearly_ isn't helpful in the sense we want to see things
get helped, ok? [2]

 perhaps we could establish a SVN acct with Alioth* for the package files?

Now ask what an absolutely invaluable asset that has already proved
to be for this project over the last few years ...

 Then instead of half a dozen or so people making their own unofficial
 diverging packages we could focus the effort in one place and all help
 to prepare a really good wx2.8 package,

That's something you'll have to take up with the dozen or so diverging
package maintainers. All the people who've contacted me to date have
been given access to whatever resources they required. So this clearly
isn't the bottleneck either.

 which could eventually make it into the Experimental repo and then
 one day to sid?

There is a little reef the locals call 'transition plan', that wrecks
many hulls of the unwary diverging package maintainers sailing casually
between those points...

You'll have to demonstrate how to navigate that safely if you want to
get me on board.

The 'one day' you speak of is called Lenny. When Lenny arrives the
diverging package maintainers will face their final day of judgement.
srsly.

 FWIW, wx2.8 release history:
 2.8.6  2007-10-01
 2.8.5  2007-09-10
 2.8.4  2007-05-18
 2.8.3  2007-03-24
 2.8.2  2007-03-13
 2.8.0  2006-12-12

 We are now almost a year from initial release and 4-5 stabilization
 releases into the cycle.

That's a pretty abbreviated history you have there.

The numbers you show above could be coup dates plotting the stabilization
cycle of governance in a third world republic, for all they show about
the release-worthiness or desirability of each wx2.8 snapshot ...

The 'time since last public mistake' isn't a great compass for future
direction. What we must care about now is what will the world-view be
when Lenny comes.

Given the last 'stabilization release' apparently requires all binaries
to be rebuilt to incorporate some of its 'stabilising', I'd be hesitant
to declare this rockpile has settled just yet.

Do you have some graph points on the number of serious bugs reported
between each of those 'stabilization' releases, and the number that
still remain? Or how many more 'stabilization releases' are projected
to be needed before this stable release is really stable enough to
carry the remaining bugs without stumbling?

Do you know if that will ever happen before:

 They are now talking about Looking forward to wxWidgets 3.0
   http://wxwidgets.blogspot.com/2007/11/looking-forward-to-wxwidgets-3.html

Indeed, it's actually supposed to be released before Lenny ...

And will require sourceful changes to most if not all existing
wx apps to transition from existing versions.

 Seems to me that it would be a good idea to focus on 2.8 for Lenny,

... so I'm not really sure why this seems like a good idea to you.

Do you really want 4 separate wx versions incorporated in Lenny?

Or should we perhaps do some more detailed analysis of whether
wx3.x is actually the 'forward' our transition plan must deal with,
and if 2.8 is just a port with cholera which we might not visit for
this next trip.

 get the package solid with as much lead testing time as possible before
 Lenny's release.

Given that the remaining wx2.4 apps may have a better time switching
to wx3 than they ever did switching to 2.6/2.8, and that apps which
currently need 2.8 will drop it like a hot brick the instant wx3 is
viable -- don't you think all that energy, if you can harness it,
would not be better directed at making wx3 a more viable candidate
than wx2.8 has ever been to date?

You aren't seriously proposing two wx transitions in the time scale
of Lenny, right? I'll be delighted if we can just pull off one well,
and even that seems like an under-resourced long shot at present.
Rushing for a near-sighted goal isn't the option I'd put my betting
money on for a Good Result.

 Is there support for a collaborative Alioth/SVN aproach?

This thing you call 'support', is it something far away and exotic?

Up to now, joining the group has been as easy as making a few promises
with a lot of latitude for late delivery.

But if you mean 'have _any_ of them been delivered?' ...

... then that's something you'll also have to talk to other people
about.

Or you could read what I've already said in response to this bug
previously, answering exactly this question. Which in summary is,
anyone who has the skill and inclination to do more than ask me
questions I've already

 Hi,

 exempi-1.99.5 has been released and I plan to upload an updated version
 as soon as ries is back.
 There are some ABI changes, which required a SONAME bump. Quoting
 upstream:

 * Change: API xmp_files_close(), xmp_files_put_xmp(), xmp_files_free(),
 xmp_free(), xmp_iterator_free(), xmp_iterator_skip() now return bool.
 * Change: API xmp_get_property_and_bits() renamed xmp_get_property().
 * Change: API xmp_set_property2() renamed xmp_set_property().

 Attached is a patch which updates the eog sources accordingly.
 As this is not backwards compatible, you have to bump the build
 dependencies in debian/control. This also means, that you musn't apply
 the patch until 1.99.5 is uploaded.

 Please consider to push this patch upstream. configure.ac has to be
 updated for this, too: EXEMPI_REQUIRED=1.99.5 line 78.

Thanks, I've forwarded it upstream:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=494881

I'll add the patch to the Debian package once you uploaded that version
to unstable...

James, please fix this RC bug, which has been open for more than

I find the situation unacceptable. Please don't make me take this

This is completely wrong. It is not gcj which is broken, but pdftk

Bug#450572: fslview switches left-right orientation on edit/save mask

2007-11-08 Thread Roland Marcus Rutschmann
Package: fslview
Version: 3.0+4.0.1-2~etch.apsy1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I extracted a structural image (axial slices neurological orientation) using
bet and needed to edit the resulting mask. So I loaded the mask, edited and
saved it. On reloading the mask left-right was switched.

Error analysis:
fslview allways show neurological orientation. On loading the image it
honours the information of the header, that the image is in neurological
orientation. When saving fslview appearently writes the image in
radiological convention but not adapting the header. That way it shouts
itself in the foot apon reloading.

If one knows about the problem one can issue a fslswapdim -x y z afterwards
but it took me a while to find out, why my edited masks look funny.
Therefor I do consider this a bug as it is an unexpected behaviour.

Regards,

Roland

Bug#446745: I'd say serious

2007-11-08 Thread Eddy Petrișor
Package: tilda
Version: 0.09.4-4

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Hello,

For me this happens in a totally reproducible way. When is started it works, but
after the first hide, the display is either black or gray.

This makes imho the bug serious since the package is unusable.

I wonder if a build against the new libs would repair the issue? That would mean
that only a binNMU would be necessary.

 Hi,

Hello,

 During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

I have seen this also reproducing on some desktop systems, but I wasn't able to

I have never managed to reproduce this is a clean pbuilder environment (and I

2007-11-08 Thread The Wanderer

Would it then be (more) correct, or at least more acceptable, to add
'#ifndef __KERNEL__' or similar to the glibc header file?

How would that interact with the earlier statement from Aurelien Jarmo
earlier in the discussion that

The definition of the structure ustat in sys/ustat.h is associated
with the C function ustat() since glibc 2.0 and in HP-UX. You can't
simply remove it and standard.

?

The core of the disagreement here seems to me to be the conflict between
the statements

linux-libc-dev should not directly export a kernel structure. Either
remove it or use #ifdef __KERNEL__, but don't bother us with that.

and

it is no bug in the kernel to export its userspace interface.

I have not seen anyone respond directly to either of these, but any
solution acceptable to both sides will probably have to find some way to
resolve this first.

(For the record: I am assuming that other libcs will not necessarily
provide the same structure in the same place, because otherwise I cannot
see how your comment about glibc not being the only one provided by
Debian is at all relevant to the issue at hand.)

I wonder if you would be interested in checking in the packaging stuff

There's no file search application currently in Xfce. But you can surely add

I don't think upstream is interested nor have time on creating this kind of

  Upstream makes this easy, you just have to provide your config in
  gitweb_conf.perl in the subdir of the CGI. Debian changes this to
  /etc/gitweb.cgi, making it hard to have multiple different
  configurations.

  I propose to first read the file in /etc and then in the dir of the
  CGI. This would allow central configuration with the ability to
  override it locally.

 You can override the location of the config file through the environment
 variable GITWEB_CONFIG, see upstream's gitweb/README (I need to install
 this in the gitweb package); does this help?

I saw this and could probably use it, but there are two issues here:
* Debian deviates from upstream, so instructions like just symlink
  gitweb.cgi here and create a config file gitweb_conf.perl ... and so
  on do not work on Debian, which is bad. I think Debian and upstream
  should agree on the config file's location.
* To set the environment variable, I would need to either add a wrapper
  or fiddle with my apache config. Probably the wrapper would be very
  small (just a one line shell script), but I would first have to test
  this (are all CGI parameters passed through?, questions like that).

Anyway, thank you for the fast answer!

Thomas

   Are you able to reproduce this problem?

  I found and reported this particular problem:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=450518

  I provide a temporary fix in there, but this cannot be easily fixed in
  pbuilder, until a new version of openmpi is uploaded. Fixing it by
  hand and using debuild seems to make petsc build. Uff...

It's funny, I had the same problem with mpich and openmpi: when I purged
mpich, it still had mpich links to mpicc and friends, so I needed to
update-alternatives --auto mpicc and mpirun. It's odd because mpich has
its postinst and prerm, so I'm not sure why the prerm wasn't
successfully removing the links...

 That problem is fixed. However, the pbuilder still fails - it should
 fail for you too.

 I discovered, that you need to change this in build-depends:

 gfortran | fortran-compiler

 to this:

 gfortran

 and when you do that, it builds in pbuilder. The problem is, that it
 probably calls g77, instead of gfortran.

Okay, I will upload a new PETSc with this fix and the new watch file you
sent me.  Thanks!

 OK, so petsc seems to be ok now. I am going to try libmesh. Please
 don't close this issue yet - there could be other problems with
 g77/gfortran and maybe the proposed fix is not really a fix (i.e.
 causes other problems). Need to check libmesh out first.

Great. I can't wait to try out the new libmesh with its new elements
for 4th order Cahn-Hilliard simulations...

Bug#450592: /etc/gitweb.conf makes it hard to host gitweb.cgi with multiple different configs

2007-11-08 Thread Thomas Bleher
Package: gitweb
Version: 1:1.5.2.4-1~bpo40+1
Severity: normal

I'd like to host multiple copies of gitweb.cgi, since I have both public and
private repos,
which I'd like to make browsable on different subdomains, some
password-protected, some public.

Upstream makes this easy, you just have to provide your config in
gitweb_conf.perl in the
subdir of the CGI. Debian changes this to /etc/gitweb.cgi, making it hard to
have multiple
different configurations.

I propose to first read the file in /etc and then in the dir of the CGI. This
would allow
central configuration with the ability to override it locally.

Bug#450591: Shouldn't crash if /usr/bin/python is not a symlink

2007-11-08 Thread Ole Laursen
Package: python-central
Version: 0.5.15

When reinstalling the python-pysqlite2, the /usr/bin/python symlink on
my system for some reason was replaced with the /usr/bin/python2.4
executable. I have no idea why. But it causes py-central to crash
because it tries to read the link and fails with an exception. This in
turn makes the pysqlite package go bonkers which means I can neither
install or remove it or install any other packages. So I humbly
suggest that py-central is a bit more careful.

I've attached a patch.

Bug#450581: [php-maint] Bug#450581: libapache2-mod-php5: ob_start (with gzhandler?) takes 100% mem+swap within a few seconds

2007-11-08 Thread Ondřej Surý
severity 450581 normal
thank you

It's normal bug in php. Certainly not critical. Linux systems has
several ways how to prevent processes eating all the available memory.

For the record:

Finally I found out what it was AND it was / is (using this script) a
major flaw in the (gz) output handler; a user on the server uses in his
code;

ob_start(ob_gzhandler, 9);

something();

ob_flush();

If something() generates a certain amounts of data, the ob_gzhandler
will get stuck in a loop, eating all memory.

In the user his particular case, because his database was not working,
some pages always have this 'magic size' (probably some factor of 9 in
this case).

I tried this on the latest stable of PHP 5 and the bug is still there;
you can crash any php hosting machine on the net with this :(

As to prevent this kind of thing from happening, I put the following
code on the machines;

#!/usr/bin/perl

$maxmem=10;

while(1) {
  @r=`ps auxwhww|awk '{print \$4,\$2,\$11,\$12,\$13,\$15}'|grep
httpd-users|grep -v grep`;
  foreach(@r) {
   chomp;
   /(.*?)\ (.*?)\ (.*)/;
   if ($1$maxmem) {
print $_ killed\n;
`kill -9 $2`;
   }
  sleep 1;
}

Update: Only PHP5.x is affected, not lower (tested); didn't try higher.
I have code to reproduce it every run.

Bug#374106: Intent to adopt debnest

2007-11-08 Thread Peter Makholm
The debnest package hasn't seen a real update since October 2004 and
was marked as orphaned in June 2006. Deepak Tripathi posted an intent
to adopt this summer, but hasn't made any upload.

As debnest fits perfectly in a project I'm doing I would like to have
debnest maintained and developed. For this I have created an alioth
project[0] and comitted the source to svn[1]. I have made the
following enhancements

  * Better integration with cdbs to enable support for other patchs
systems

  * Recursive unpacking of nested packages

  * Unpack sources in unversioned directories to ease handling of
patches between versions of nested packages

all of which I currently need. I have some other plans for development
outlined in the TODO file[2]. If no-one complains I plan to upload a
new version of debnest within a fortnight (if ftp-master is fixed).

I don't think so... From upstream bts (#2430):

Yup, this is known; pretty sure there was a bug filed on this in the past, or
 maybe a discussion on the mailing list. Either way, not gonna get fixed. Wait
 for Jannis' real fd.o menu implementation in 4.6.

Opening a bug against OO.o is not a proper fix, as Zoran said.

I guess we could just keep this bug open to document the problem and

When installing using a netinstall you are prompted to select a network
card with a list like:

It really should show the MAC address to let you distinguish which
interface you intend to use; in my case I have a set of Dell PE 1955

as eth1 under Debian and I know the Mac address of the appropriate one.

My machine is a bit of an unholy mess: I installed the
generated vmware-server package but I already had a
non-debian package version of vwmare-workstation installed.
That might be related. I removed vmware-workstation before
trying to uninstall this package (so probably in the wrong
order)

Bug#450592: /etc/gitweb.conf makes it hard to host gitweb.cgi with multiple different configs

Hi Rafael,

please always CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] on your replies!

Your report sounds very strange.
To summarize, running NetworkManager --no-daemon works just fine
according to your reply unless you haven't included the complete output.
I can't see, why /etc/init.d/network-manager start should fail, otherwise.
Please reboot your system, stop NetworkManager
(/etc/init.d/network-manager stop) and then run
NetworkManager --no-daemon || echo error staring NM.
Please send me the complete output.
Do you have any suspicious output in /var/log/(messages,syslog)?
Have you modified anything in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/?
How does your /etc/network/interfaces look like?
Has network-manager worked for you before?

Bug#450574: Does not read /usr/share/vim/addons/ but /var/lib/vim/addons/

2007-11-08 Thread James Vega
On Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 10:05:23AM +0100, Markus Fischer wrote:
 Version: 1:7.0-122+1etch3

 The directory /usr/share/vim/addons/ is never considered by vim to be
 parsed upon starting. Using strace I discovered that only
 /var/lib/vim/addons/ is considered.

For the version of Vim you reported the bug against,
/usr/share/vim/addons/ is still included in Vim's runtimepath option
by default. If Vim isn't checking that directory, then you likely have
modified /usr/share/vim/vim70/debian.vim or are overriding the value in
your ~/.vimrc. You can check where that option was last set by starting
Vim and then using the command :verbose set runtimepath?.

In case you happen to be running reportbug on an older system than where
you experienced the problem, I'll explain the situation for Lenny/Sid as
well. We still expect packages that ship Vim plugins to install those
plugins in /usr/share/vim/addons (or a path specific for their package)
but we no longer include that path by default in Vim's runtimepath[0].
This is because the old behavior would cause any plugin which was
installed there to be enabled by default for *every* user on the system.
This is a very unfriendly default, especially with plugins like
latex-suite which are very invasive.

We removed /usr/share/vim/addons from the runtimepath and now suggest
that the user installs vim-addons-manager and uses the vim-addons
command to enable, for their user, the plugins they want to use. Use of
vim-addons-manager isn't required as you can still add
/usr/share/vim/addons to your runtimepath (not recommended) or manually
copy/symlink the plugins' files into the appropriate part of your
~/.vim/ directory.

Bug#450596: floppyd shouldn't depend of mtools

2007-11-08 Thread Victor Wagner
Package: floppyd
Version: 3.9.10.ds1-3
Severity: important

Whole purpose of existense of floppyd as separate package is
ability to install it on the systems where there are no local users
(i.e. diskless X-terminals).

So floppyd shouldn't depend on mtools. Because floppyd ought to be
installed where no user tools (such as mtools) should exist.

Other way around is also true. There can be interactive systems (i.e.
isolated non-networked PC) where mtools are usable but floppyd is not
needed.

floppyd can suggest or recommend mtools, because to make floppyd usable
mtools should exist somewhere on the same LAN.

did you install both the frontend and the server in one run? If the server

the servers config file and places it in /etc/zabbix/dbconfig.php.

If the frontend does not find any server configuration file it prompts for the

your DEBCONF_PRIORITY was set to high and thus the question was skipped.

Bug#450610: blop: pulse_1645 limits frequency

2007-11-08 Thread Frank Heckenbach
Package: blop
Version: 0.2.8-5
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The pulse_1645 module limits the pulse frequency to 1/48000 of the
sample rate. E.g., with a sample rate of 44100, this results in the
strange limit of 0.919Hz. What's more confusing is that the
frequency can be put below the limit at runtime, but when saving and
reloading a patch, it's reset to the limit.

As there doesn't seem to be a strong reason for the limit anyway, I
suggest to just remove the limit. I've tested it with the following
patch for a while, and it works well. Other modules may also be
affected, but as I'm not using them ATM, I didn't patch and test
them.
