Bug#454409: sudo: password prompt should display root when the rootpw option is set
Tags 454409 +patch thanks Hi, I noticed the same problem and was pretty confused about it. IMHO for users of Defaults root_pw it is more confusing than before. Unfortunately there is no such solution as Francois Marier states, at least not trivial to reach. The problem is: The default password prompt is configured using an option to --configure which basically excepts the same placeholders, which are also accepted by the -p option to sudo. The used placeholder (%u) always represents the caller of sudo, which is based on the (wrong) assumption that requested password is always the password of the caller. But there is no alternative to %u, because %U just points to the user that is called, but that - again - wouldn't work for Defaults rootpw. Recommendation: I therefore recommend to keep the [sudo] prefixed password prompt to keep eliminating the confusion caused by sudo-called programs that ask for passwords themselves, but simply remove the for %u part from the prompt. Further there should probably be a feature request sent upstream to implement a proper placeholder that can be used in future versions. Perhaps someone wants to create an appropriate patch and send it upstream? The attached patch updates debian/rules to follow the recommendation. Feel free to use it. Probably no need to Cc: the end-users for this. tillea wrote: I wonder if you could provide a versioned tarball containing the script itself the copyright statement (GPL) and a README (in principle as it is done in the Debian tarball). The rationale behind this request is that this would enable me to use a so called wathc file which is Debians way to observe new upstream versions. It basically relies on an URL containing a regexp for the version number - if it increases the maintainer gets a signal for a new upstream version. http://www.jhnc.org/findimagedupes/ now links to a tar file. Bug#454431: debian-policy: Policy for module sources needed
Package: debian-policy Severity: normal I think we should have policy for module source packages that specifies how such a package should look like. There are several ways to build a kernel module from a source file and some (at least the inclusion in linux-modules-extra/contrib/non-free) are not easily tryable by the maintainer of the source package. The current policy in linux-modules-* is: A module source package works with l-m-e, or it doesn't. So I gather it's the source maintainer's job to make sure it compiles inside the framework. But there is no documentation available about linux-modules-* at all. The process might change again in the future which might make the situation even more complex. Therefore I think there should be some (sub) policy explaining what to do. Titles such as something crashes is very bad, as that is a very vague symptom. Exception/crash messages should be used as title instead.] I believe the cause of this new crash (after updating cli-common and reinstalling mono-addins) was caused by a partial upgrade of mono-addins and restarting tomyboy. Chain of events: - upgraded cli-common to = 0.5.1 - reinstalled libmono-addins2.0-cil - re-started tomboy - crash, mono-addins DB got into a incosistent state as an exception happened caused by the missing policy file for mono-addins-gui. - upgraded libmono-addins-gui2.0-cil, started tomboy - stil crashes because of corrupted addin DB. The deletion of ~/.tomboy deleted the addins DB, and it become rebuild during the next start, but this time with a clean mono-addins install. I believe this is a corner-case which wouldn't happen in normal upgrade scenarios, thus I am closing the bug report. -- Regards, Mirco 'meebey' Bauer PGP-Key ID: 0xEEF946C8 FOSS Developer[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.meebey.net/ PEAR Developer[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://pear.php.net/ Debian Developer [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.debian.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#454132: findimagedupes -strange results when using fp database
On Tue, 4 Dec 2007, Jonathan H N Chin wrote: I noticed some bad logic in process_file() and diffbits() so I have uploaded a new version (2.5). Many thanks for your quick response. I wonder if you could provide a versioned tarball containing the script itself the copyright statement (GPL) and a README (in principle as it is done in the Debian tarball). The rationale behind this request is that this would enable me to use a so called wathc file which is Debians way to observe new upstream versions. It basically relies on an URL containing a regexp for the version number - if it increases the maintainer gets a signal for a new upstream version. I would be very happy to implement this watch file before my next upload in case you would be so nice to follow my suggestion. The switch to graphicsmagic can be done easily. Bug#454403: openssh: openssh-server-udeb of arm depends zlib1g instead of zlib1g-udeb
On Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 03:36:54PM +0900, Kenshi Muto wrote: Package: openssh Severity: important Version: 4.6p1-7 Hi, Strangely, openssh-server-udeb of arm architecture depends zlib1g instead of zlib1g-udeb. This breaks daily arm d-i builder. Because other architectures seem OK, it may be specific problem of arm buildd. 4.6p1-6 looks OK. AFAIK this bug happened once ago also. This is due to a zlib bug from five months ago, namely: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=431873 Simply upgrading zlib1g-dev on the buildd to anything other than the broken version 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-3 will fix it. It doesn't really seem appropriate for me to bump the build-dependency version just for this; I don't generally like to use build-dependencies just to document bugs in single versions of other packages. James, could you upgrade the buildd and do a binary NMU, perhaps? Thanks, -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#454469: ITP: lrslib -- enumerate vertices and extreme rays of a convex polyhedron
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: David Bremner [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Package name: lrslib Version : 4.2b Upstream Author : David Avis [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://cgm.cs.mcgill.ca/~avis/C/lrs.html * License : GPL 2+ Programming Lang: C Description : Enumerate vertices and extreme rays of a convex polyhedron A convex polyhedron is the set of points satisfying a finite family of linear inequalities. The study of the vertices and extreme rays of such systems is important and useful in e.g. mathematics and optimization. In a dual interpretation, finding the vertices of a (bounded) polyhedron is equivalent to finding the convex hull (bounding inequalities) of an (arbitrary dimensional) set of points. Lrs (lexicographic reverse search) has two important features that can be very important for certain applications: it works in exact arithmetic, and it consumes memory proportional to the input, no matter how large the output is. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_CA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_CA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: bugs.debian.org Followup-For: Bug #448861 Either pkgreport should use a case insensitive compare or bugreport should lowercase the argument itself (less ideal). Having a newer libaqbanking-data will not cause a segfault, so you probably can work with it. But don't take it as granted. Bug#453345: debianutils: which script has extraneous code
# Regression; see below. reopen 453345 thanks On Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:31:16PM -0500, Adam Katz wrote: Two bits of extraneous code to remove: lines 30-33: 30 case $PATH in 31 *::) : not *DIR: ;; 32 *:) PATH=$PATH: ;; 33 esac Unless this is for some weird nonstandard bourne implementation, the argument not *DIR: to the colon (:) builtin on line 31 is ignored, For the record, : foo is a not entirely uncommon alternative way to write comments in Bourne shell; it's also the only way to squeeze a comment and a trailing ;; onto a single line. lines 47-49: 47 if [ -z $ELEMENT ]; then 48 ELEMENT=. 49 fi I've never heard of somebody's path including an empty string; this only triggers on a path like PATH=/usr/local/bin:'':/usr/bin. I think this is another misunderstanding of Bourne shell tokenization. The only other application I can see for this would be if Bourne interpreted a PATH=/usr/local/bin::/usr/bin as having the tokens '/usr/local/bin' and '' and '/usr/bin' (which it does not), in which case there would be an empty token, I think real-life tests generally trump everything else. :-) In Debian's default shell, bash: $ PATH=/usr/local/bin::/usr/bin $ IFS=: $ for ELEMENT in $PATH; do echo '$ELEMENT'; done '/usr/local/bin' '' '/usr/bin' but why should that be interpreted as the current directory? As Clint notes, empty strings do represent the current working directory. Chapter and verse can be found in http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/xbd_chap08.html: This variable shall represent the sequence of path prefixes that certain functions and utilities apply in searching for an executable file known only by a filename. The prefixes shall be separated by a colon (':'). When a non-zero-length prefix is applied to this filename, a slash shall be inserted between the prefix and the filename. A zero-length prefix is a legacy feature that indicates the current working directory. It appears as two adjacent colons (::), as an initial colon preceding the rest of the list, or as a trailing colon following the rest of the list. A strictly conforming application shall use an actual pathname (such as .) to represent the current working directory in PATH. The list shall be searched from beginning to end, applying the filename to each prefix, until an executable file with the specified name and appropriate execution permissions is found. If the pathname being sought contains a slash, the search through the path prefixes shall not be performed. If the pathname begins with a slash, the specified path is resolved (see Pathname Resolution). If PATH is unset or is set to null, the path search is implementation-defined. In the event there IS an empty string in handed to the loop on line 46, nothing will happen unless the argument ($PROGRAM) happens to exist as a file in / with executable permissions (assuming you remove lines 47-49, otherwise it searches the current directory). I believe that Clint is incorrect that this was the intent; it certainly wasn't my intent, as that does not correspond to the shell's command search semantics. It's just an unremarkable accident of the obvious implementation. ELEMENT is not supposed to be empty in that case branch. In your later mail, you wrote: Line 31 is still messy and counter-intuitive. How about this instead: case $PATH in *[^:]:) PATH=$PATH: ;; esac That isn't valid POSIX shell, per http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/xcu_chap02.html#tag_02_13: The description of basic regular expression bracket expressions in the Base Definitions volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-2001, Section 9.3.5, RE Bracket Expression shall also apply to the pattern bracket expression, except that the exclamation mark character ('!') shall replace the circumflex character ('^') in its role in a non-matching list in the regular expression notation. A bracket expression starting with an unquoted circumflex character produces unspecified results. So you need *[!:]: there. This mistake results in a regression. Using bash (it's possibly worth noting that dash doesn't implement a trailing colon in PATH correctly): $ touch foo $ chmod +x foo $ type foo -bash: type: foo: not found $ which foo $ PATH=/usr/bin:/bin: type foo foo is ./foo $ PATH=/usr/bin:/bin: which foo $ Please fix this by changing the pattern to *[!:]:, or back to the perfectly good and arguably clearer (if longer) code that was there before. Is there a reason Thunar has to ignore my locale and do things in a non-standard way by default? Wouldn't it be better for Thunar to sort things according to LC_COLLATE by default, and allow users who wished to override the locale at the application level (i.e. specific to Thunar) set MiscCaseSensitive to either TRUE *or* FALSE? As it stands Thunar isn't integrated with the wider environment and so the user has to configure it separately. Bug#454057: please move dpkg-architecture
Raphael Hertzog a écrit : On Wed, 05 Dec 2007, Julien Cristau wrote: Or we can change type-handling too. Apparently xorg only uses the fact that type-handling provides not+sparc but it doesn't use the type-handling program which is the real user of dpkg-architecture. Is that right? Yes, that's correct. Maybe type-handling could be split with an empty package whose sole purpose is to Provides some virtual packages while type-handling stays the program with its dpkg-dev dependency. I think this solution would be my first preference. My preference would be for dpkg to allow 'Depends: foo [arch]' in arch:all packages, but failing that, I agree. Right now the support for the [arch] syntax is only in the perl code and not at all in the C part that concerns dpkg. Adding it there is a non-trivial effort and would probably also require changes in apt-based software. Aurélien, what do you think of the idea of change concerning type-handling ? From my point of view, we should get rid of type-handling as soon as possible. This is actually a big and buggy hack to workaround dpkg/apt lacks. The first think I would like to see, is [os] or [cpu] support in dpkg-dev *enabled* and *allowed* for arch-any packages. This would replace type-handling in 90% of the cases. For the [arch] support in binary-all packages, I guess the main use case (if not all) is for metapackages depending on various packages. I don't really see the problem (except the policy, but that can be changed) of using binary-any packages for those metapackages, even if there is no binary files insude them. They are by definition very small, so that won't bloat the archive. If there are still some cases not solved by this approach, I guess the package that should provide the not+sparc package is dpkg. It is always installed on systems, so strange behaviours of apt with virtual packages is avoided. That's why we have type-handling installed on GNU/kFreeBSD build daemons by default (GNU/kFreeBSD uses type-handling more than other architectures). -- .''`.
