No, not in the current state of affairs, at least.

Both the serial consoles and the framebuffer devices need to be builtin,
as they are vital for early output.

This is also the politic that Linus Torvalds had taken, when he insisted
on having visible screen feedback as early as possible in the kernel.

Doing anything else here will not do anyone a favour, and will make
debugging more complicated, which will cost us in the end.

Thanks for your report.

Bug#483494: xserver-xorg-input-wacom: problems with multiple screens

2008-05-29 Thread Ron

Hi Jakob,

I'm forwarding this to the linuxwacom list for confirmation and
discussion, but I suspect this may be related to trouble with
xorg 1.4 and the rescaling ...

Magnus, is this just a misconfiguration issue, or a real problem?
If the latter, is there a known workaround, or is this something
we are waiting on xorg 1.5 and the scaling code to be restored
before it can be fixed?

Cheers,
Ron

In my dual-headed setup, I run a single X session with two screens.
When using a wacom tablet as a pointer, anything left of center on the
tablet corresponds to the left half of my left monitor, and anything on the
right half of the tablet points to the right half of the right monitor.

So, if you were to number the halves of my monitors 1-4, left-to-right,
I can only actually access halves 1 and 4, and not touch 2 or 3 (the
 insides).

Correct. The vimscript function strlen() simply returns the number of
bytes. There are various workarounds but they don't apply to all
different encodings. If you could send an example file, I'll test the
workaround that should be applicable in most cases.

example russian text (utf8):

Quoting Florian Weimer ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 * Christian Perrier:

To security team: as I said, I'm unsure that I'll be able to work on
packages for etch. I'll at least try building with that patch. As
usual, I may need guidance to upload to the right place if you're OK
for us to upload for etch.

You should prepare an upload with distribution stable-security, urgency
 high, and upload it to:

   ftp://security-master.debian.org/pub/SecurityUploadQueue

OK, that upload is ready.

So is another upload of 3.0.30, for unstable, security=high. It should
deal with testing-security as well as I think that the transition
shouldn't be blocked by an external factor (dependency packages).

I could do that for you. The problem is regression testing, which I can
do only to an extremely limited extent.

When it comes at samba, regression testing is *anyway* possible on an
extremely limited extent. There are way too many use cases which
require big infrastructures for testing (often server member of an
Active Directory domain), so we mostly rely on the good communication
with our upstream (as it happened for the last sec. issues which were
jerky for that reason and also because upstream themselves are
sometimes late wrt regression testing).

What about sarge? It is affected as well (samba is 3.0.14 there) but is it
still officially supported wrt security updates?

sarge is officially out of support.

OK. I'll confirm that in users mailing lists for samba just to be sure
that some users are aware of that and don't expect packages from us.
(unofficial packages could be easy to build, though)

I may have very well missed that but has the official out of support
for sarge been announced somewhere. It definitely was announced when
etch was released, but a reminder would help our users (assuming
nothing has been sent, which, as I said, I'm unsure of).

Bug#469920: Inclusion of external files in TeXMaker 1.7.1

2008-05-29 Thread Andreas Tille

Hi Pascal,

I'm going to prepare the current TeXMaker version for Debian. While doing
so I found that there is a patch for version 1.6 available that fixes a
problem with file inclusion. This patch was created by Ubuntu maintainers
and is available at

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/texmaker/+bug/186137

I'm not sure whether this solution was forewarded to you because the current
Debian maintainer seems to have lost interest in this package and has ignored
this patch. When I tried to apply the patch to version 1.7.1 I noticed that
you replaced the cruxial line

  InsertTag(\\includegraphics[scale=1]{+fi.baseName()+.+fi.completeSuffix()+}
,26,0);

by

  InsertTag(\\includegraphics[scale=1]{+fi.completeBaseName()+.+fi.suffix()+}
,26,0);

and you did so in replacing the other two occurences of fi.baseName() by
fi.completeBaseName() which somehow smells like you noticed the problem yourself
and fixed the problem by other means. Could you confirm that this problem
is fixed in version 1.7.1?

Moreover I would like you to know that there is some minor issue with your
desktop
file. Our policy checker lintian says:

---
desktop-entry-contains-deprecated-key
/usr/share/applications/texmaker.desktop:12 MiniIcon

The key on this line of the desktop entry has been deprecated in the
   FreeDesktop specification.

   Refer to
   http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/1.0/apc.html for
   details.
---

You might like to remove this line.

BTW, you can find the Debian packaging stuff that was prepared to build
packages of version 1.7.1 at

svn://svn.debian.org/svn/debian-science/packages/texmaker/trunk/

Kind regards and thanks for working on TeXMaker which is very helpful for
my colleagues to learn LaTeX

   Andreas.

PS: Joseph, if I do not hear something from you until begin of next week
I will upload on behalf of the Debian Science Team.

Several tests of the svk package fails reproducible with several different
glibc internal free checks like invalid pointer or corrupted

list. Many of the calls seems to go through swig, so maybe this problem is
  located there.

Maybe the following messages are connected:

  /home/bastian/debian/perl/svk/trunk/blib/lib/SVK/Command/Commit.pm line 555.

FWIW, these messages are triggered by libperlio-via-dynamic-perl
and show up in its test suite too. I looked into them a bit and just reported

  http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=54934

but I'm quite sure that's not going to solve the real problem.

The memory corruption is very much related. The attached patch to
PerlIO::via::dynamic works around it and makes the whole svk test suite
pass for me. I'll try to come up with a minimal test case for the
segfaults and report it as another Perl bug.

I just sent this upstream as [rt.cpan.org #36260]. Bastian, you may want
to apply the workaround to libperlio-via-dynamic-perl for now. Cloning,
but feel free to close if you prefer to wait for Perl to get fixed.

however, the actual size of such .deb from tat URL is 18980, which match
'Size:' field in Packages, and install of such .deb manually wget'd succeed
without problems. The same .deb has same size on main repo.

Nevertheless, it says 'Need to get 19.2kB' while 18980 B means 18.5kB, so
there's actually a size (computation/reporting) mismatch somewhere.

What's going on?

Bug#483519: git-svn: No help/-h/--help option

2008-05-29 Thread Josef Spillner
Package: git-svn

The git-svn tool is not consistent with the rest of the git bunch as it
doesn't have any option to display a short summary of options or the
manual page. It would be nice to have at least -h/--help working as this
is usually expected from a command line tool.

Bug#285590: shared libdts library

I have another question in this context:

I am of course going to drop the PIC static library once we ship a
shared one. How about packages in Debian that have been patched to
link against libdts_pic (I have to admit I don't know which these are,
though)? Should they be informed separately (i.e. bugs be filed) or is
an email to -devel introducing the change enough? I mean, it's a very
minor and obvious change anyway.

Cheers,
Fabian

Package: ivritex

The current version in repos' is very old. This makes latex and hebrew
on debian pretty much outdated. Nothing more to say.
There was a wish to pack an even older upstream release which was
ignored. Hope this one will not end the same way.

Cheers, Oz.

Bastian, what justification is there for not applying at lease the
second patch ? Its a damn memory leak, how can you not accept it, when
it is the upstream of those patches who propose them. Note that Geoff
didn't just send you the whole patchset, but cherry picked two patches
he considered important for the useability of the PS3, which is already
memory starved, so limiting it further to 80MB and not fixing a memory
leak is *NOT* acceptable.

Sadly,

Bug#483532: workrave: Workrave freezes when system time has changed

2008-05-29 Thread André Offringa
Package: workrave
Version: 1.8.5-6
Severity: normal

I am running ntpdate on my laptop, and when I have worked some time without
Internet, my system time might be quite rigurously changed by ntpdate. If
this happens, Workrave continuous to work correctly, and pops up the next
micro break correctly: the timer starts to count down to 0. However, once it
has reached 0, the micro break window does not dissapear, leaving my computer
in a frozen state, as I can not type or close windows either. I have also
seen the counter jumping to a very high value, e.g. two hours to count down,
but that happens less often.

Bug#439006: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Bug#483489: linux-2.6: Optional powerpc64 patches for PS3]

2008-05-29 Thread Sven Luther
Hi technical comittee, ..

I write to you again about this topic, to show you another case of
disfunctioning of the kernel team politic regarding patches, and one i
am not even involved with, so you have no excuse to ignore this issue
because i am involved.

Geoff Levand, who is one of the sony upstream developers of the sony PS3
linux port, recently did the work to provide a configuration file to the
kernel team for adding PS3 support to our kernels, which is the first
step in proper debian support on PS3, since d-i work kind of depends on
this.

Furthermore, he proposed two patches which seems to be important, as you
can see below, and bastian blank refused them asking him to go upstream
first.

Well, this is not some random guy providing some patch he got from some
random location, but the sony team is actively bringing those patches
upstream.

Furthermore, the nature of those patches, which i would consider vital
for the useability of the memory starved PS3, doesn't justify not
applying them. One is there to allow the PS3 to make use of the full
memory of the PS3, and not be limited to 80MB, the second fixes a memory
leak.

It is clear that the kernel team is not able to have a rationale
decision on this topic, and is blocked unthinkingly because of some
send upstream first discourse who is too rigid and arrogant.

If they don't have enough manpower to handle this correctly, then maybe
they should not expulse people of their team without any reasonable
justification, and i would gladly be handling this.

So, i hope that the technical committee will have the decency and
basic politeness to at least aknowledge this bug report now that it
hurts others than just me, and take this very serious issue in its hand,
and take a decision, as its responsabilities dictate.

Sadly,

Sven Luther

Attached are two patches against the debian linux-2.6-2.6.25
sources that would be nice to apply for the PS3.

 - debian-powerpc64-vmemmap-variable-page-size.diff

This patch changes vmemmap to use a different region (region 0xf) of the
address space whose page size can be dynamically configured at boot.

The problem with the current approach of always using 16M pages is that
it's not well suited to machines that have small amounts of memory such
as small partitions on pseries, or PS3's.

In fact, on the PS3, failure to allocate the 16M page backing vmmemmap
tends to prevent hotplugging the HV's additional memory, thus limiting
the available memory even more, from my experience down to something
like 80M total, which makes it really not very useable.

 - debian-powerpc64-ps3-gelic-wireless-fix-memory-leak.patch

This fixes the bug that the I/O buffer is not freed at the driver removal.

Bug#483535: aufs-source: aufs-modules generated with make-kpkg contains spurious files

2008-05-29 Thread Frederic Boiteux
Package: aufs-source
Version: 0+20080514-2.1calistelEtch1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

  Hello,

I've tried to compile aufs module from aufs-source package with
make-kpkg from kernel-package v. 11.001-0.1 on an Etch computer in the
same time I compiled a 2.6.25 linux kernel with custom patches. The
compilation works, but generated package (aufs-modules-...) contains
files from kernel (/lib/modules/kvers/modules.*, like
modules.seriomap) which prevent this package to be installed along its
linux-image-* package.

I've looked at the aufs's debian/rules Makefile, and found that the
installation command should be responsible of that. I've looked at other
out-of-tree module sources, but didn't find a common way to install
built .ko files, so I propose you a patch inspired from
ov51x-jpeg-source I know a bit.
I've tested modified sources with module-assistant with success.

  Fred.

Strange. If you wget it, and then dpkg -i it, does it work?
Have you checked the usual stuff (full /var, etc)?

If the package should not be built there it should be declared as such.
If it can be built in some other way just make the package do that.

Actually I looked only now at the architecture lists of ara and

So, even assuming that the buildd have been invoked on the two packages

Bug#483536: backkupninja: Output to syslog

2008-05-29 Thread Floris Bruynooghe
Package: backkupninja
Severity: wishlist

Hello

It would be nice if backupninja send it's status messages to the syslog
as well as sending them in an email (which is optional anyway).
Currently my .sh scripts send all status to both syslog and backupninja
to alleviate this.

Related to this (maybe this should be a separate wishlist bug) it would
be good if backupninja would catch signals and log the fact that it got
stopped before the backup was completed. This is useful e.g. when a
system shutdown occurs.

Regards
Floris

Thank you for reporting this. This bug already bit Ubuntu users a
while back, because they adopted X.org core 1.4 before we did.

This being said, since our package hasn't changed one bit, I instead
suspect changes in X.org core to be the source of the problem. It
could be as simple as certain prototypes having changed location and
therefore requiring a different file to #include in the source code.
Let's see what the X Task Force has to say.

Seems that fdo bug 16145 is relevant.

twisted/internet/glib2reactor.py in the install() function is missing

The bug still exists in upstream trunk. I have reported it to

this simple fix until it is fixed upstream and the new upstream version
has been packaged for Debian.

Hi Roberto!

* Roberto C. Sanchez [EMAIL PROTECTED] [080529 01:06]:

I request an adopter for the httperf package. As of some time ago I
have lost interest in the package and do not use it much anymore. The
package first entered Debian nearly seven years ago and in that time has
not seen a new upstream release. The project can be said to be feature
complete, and so the lack of upstream activity is not a problem. The
package is currently bug free and very easy to maintain. I have kept
the package in svn since taking it over and would be glad to provide the
entire svn history to whomever chooses to adopt this package.

I would like to adopt your package and would like to keep it it in
subversion (in the collab maint repository), so I would be interested in
the svn history as well. (would still need to search through the
documentation how to import that.)

Many thanks for your work so far, indeed it's in a very fine condition!

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

Hi Javier,

What's the status of this patch? Are you still interested in getting
this into developers-reference?

I generally agree that such a section would be a good idea, at least the
first part (Best practices for security review and design). I'm not
quite sure about the second part (System users and groups for software
daemons), because it's quite long, and if we take that path, there are
other things that should be documented in the same way.

Bug#483545: xterm: CopyPaste ### with iso8859-2

2008-05-29 Thread Miroslaw Kwasniak
Package: xterm
Version: 235-1
Severity: normal

Hi, copypaste of polish characters sometimes replaces them with #.

It happens randomly (and seldom) at bash prompt but can be easy
provoked by this recipe:

1) write in bash: echo ąćęłńóśźż
2) mark it with mouse
3) start an editor in this xterm (tested with: vim, joe, mcedit)
4) paste and you get #ó###

If you scroll xterm back and mark again then paste works.

This bug doesn't happen if an editor is invoked in another xterm -
precisely it occurs seldom as at bash promt.

Bug#483515: ruby: Failed to fetch http://ftp.it.debian.org/debian/pool/main/r/ruby-defaults/ruby_1.8.2 -1_all.deb Size mismatch

Strange. If you wget it, and then dpkg -i it, does it work?

yes, as mentioned in the orig report.

Have you checked the usual stuff (full /var, etc)?

yes, all fine. BTW if I move the wget'd .deb into /var/cache/apt/archives
then run apt-get update apt-get install ruby I get the error and the
.deb is move into partial/ (or it gets deleted downloaded, but anyway).

It's not the only 1st pkg that puzzles me this way, so if everything
looks fine on your site, there might be something with apt
(apt 0.6.46.4-0.1)? in other instances I did not insist too much - thinking
of repo updates going on, but in this case, being a dependency pkg, I
wanted/needed to check further.
Since data in Packages look consistent with the actual pkg in the repo:

Filename: pool/main/r/ruby-defaults/ruby_1.8.2-1_all.deb
Size: 18980
MD5sum: d739d40317177f9092dd8413e002e736

as downloaded, it seems like apt checks the pkg against some other dB and
it finds inconsistencies.

Bug#415381: gnome-mplayer/gecko-mediaplayer in Debian

2008-05-29 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
Dear Michael,

if you remember I packaged gnome-mplayer for Ubuntu based on your early work.
I also packaged gecko-mediaplayer since apparently you were not interested to
have it in Ubuntu.
Both packages are at version 0.6.1 and are doing well.
I have now a sponsor that would like to upload them to Debian.
Would you object in us doing so?
If you are still interested in these packages we would be happy if you'd like
to contribute.

Please let us know,

Cesare

Bug#483548: libavcodec-dev: file conflict with libavutil-dev, needs Replaces

2008-05-29 Thread Julien Cristau

ffmpeg-config seems to have moved from libavutils-dev to libavcodec-dev,

Bug#450713: Disable device grab to allow device access for other calibration utility

2008-05-29 Thread Ondrej Zary
Hello,
this patch adds GrabDevice option to the driver. When this option is set in
xorg.conf to Off,
it disables EVIOCGRAB, allowing other programs to access the device.
This allows calibrator from touchkitusb to work.

/usr/share/icedove/chrome/icons/default/messengerWindow.xpm looks to be

In case this bug is already fixed in a later version, I have already
tried upgrading to sid (which gives cdrdao version 1:1.2.2-15 and
linux-image-2.6.25-2-686 version 2.6.25-4) but the problem is still
there.

I should also mention that on the broken machine, and cdrdao's time
counter doesn't increase like it does on the working machine (but I
don't know if this is related).

How can I debug this? Thanks.

This was changed to be the way it is now after the discussion in
bug #472833. The way it is now complies with the specification,
so the bug must be somewhere in GNOME.

yes, as mentioned in the orig report.

yes, all fine.

Mmmh, OK. I'm out of ideas and it doesn't sound ruby-specific, so I'm
reassigning this to apt.

Bug#483172: sysv-rc: does not run all shutdown scripts

2008-05-29 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Actually, sysv-rc is behaving as intended, designed and documented.
When switching from one runlevel to another, only new start scripts
are executed. So, if portmap want to stop in runlevel 0 and 6 while
starting in runlevels 2-5, it should install a K* symlink, not S*
symlinks. On the other hand, the runlevels 0 and 6 are very special,
as S* symlinks are handled as if they wyere K* symlinks. This is an
argument for handling the optimizing specially as well.

I believe the proper fix for this is to convert all S* style symlinks
in rc0.d/ and rc6.d/ to K* style symlinks, but it will require a lot
of painful coordination using the current framework. Switching to
dependency based boot sequencing using insserv will solve this problem
automatically.

Anyway, I'll see what can be done in init.d/rc to work around this
issue.

Happy hacking,

Bug#483503: xmlto is confused by cross-references into an external entity.

Am Mittwoch, den 28.05.2008, 21:50 -0700 schrieb Daniel Burrows:

I was just experimenting with using xmlto on the aptitude documentation.
 I didn't get very far.

aptitude's documentation is split into a manpage and the main body of
the docs. (this is for the convenience of translators -- they can just
translate the manpage if they want) The manpage is incorporated into
the main document via what I believe is an external entity, unless I'm
 getting my XML terminology wrong:

 !ENTITY manpage SYSTEM manpage.xml

When I run xmlto on the aptitude docs, it fails and prints a bunch of
 validity errors like this:

 /home/daniel/programming/aptitude/head/doc/en/aptitude.xml:9570:
element link: validity error : IDREF attribute linkend references an
 unknown ID cmdlineOptionSafeUpgradeNoNewInstalls

The problem is, an element with that ID *does* exist, in manpage.xml.
It looks like xmlto is just ignoring everything in that file when
checking cross-references. In contrast, xsltproc is quite happy to
handle these cross-references and generates links for them in the HTML
 output.

xmlto is just a Bash-script, which uses xsltproc. So there error you get
is thrown by libxml/libxslt/xsltproc.

Can you give me the exact command you try execute? I would then try to
reproduce the problem myself. But please make sure, that xmllint is
happy with your files. ATM I guess, the validation fails. Also note the
--skip-validation switch. Does it run with this switch?

Regards, Daniel

Only I can think here is your have some png of the kword installation
corrupted.
So here you have some ideas to try:

a) Reinstall kword and kword-data, specially the latter since it is where all
the png files are.

b) Try moving away your kwordrc file to see if there is something in our
configuracion corrupted
mv ~/.kde/share/config/kwordrc ~/.kde/share/config/kwordrc.backup
you can recover it with:
mv ~/.kde/share/config/kwordrc.backup ~/.kde/share/config/kwordrc

c) start kword with strace:
strace kword

and look at the last lines where it crashes to see if there is any useful
output.

Again, any status information on this ITP and on license type change you can
share would be great and I look forward to hearing your news soon.

Bug#437466: module-assistant: Please integrate Matthijs Kooijman's patch

2008-05-29 Thread Steffen Grunewald
Package: module-assistant
Version: 0.10.8
Followup-For: Bug #437466

As I could prove with my local installation, Matthijs' fix indeed works,
and allows me to run
m-a -t -k `echo /lib/modules/*/build/ a-i openafs-modules
to build openafs-modules for all installed kernels.

Version 0.10.11.0 in sid (and probably lenny) still has the same
problem.
I'd like to see the importance of this bug raised and a fixed version to
be released with Lenny...
