Bug#501849: Please permit installation with an empty user password

Yes, this is pointlessly insecure, and yes, there are input tools that can be used in some cases, but these tend to be fairly cumbersome. Otavio Salvador wrote: I believe it is a nice option to be supported, even more that the Debian Embedded effort is starting to be integrated on the distribution. I can only see the point of this to some extend for some embedded devices. In general I would expect that embedded devices will require much more customization than just having the user password unset. Even stronger. For embedded devices with a graphical user interface I would expect that probably no login to the graphical user interface would be required (i.e. customization of display manager or of the way X.Org is started), and possibly that passwordless use of sudo would be allowed. But I also would expect the actual user ID still to be protected with a password, especially as a lot of these devices will have networking and thus do need fairly strong protection for external access. So I'm personally still not really convinced of the real value of this option, but will also not block its inclusion if other feel that it really is useful. But of course only if the implementation is sane, so my other comments would still need to be addressed. Please make sure that the installation guide explicitly warns that using the option will result in an insecure system! Bug#501762: closed by Martin Pitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Re: Bug#501762: postgres: No transition to Lenny)
Hih Wojciech, Wojciech Zareba [2008-10-10 8:51 +0200]: I've upgraded Etch to Lenny. Everything is OK except postgres: there is no smooth transition to the never version (version 8.1 is obsolete in Lenny). You get a debconf notification that 8.1 is obsolete and you need to install postgresql-8.3 and use pg_upgradecluster to upgrade the 8.1 databases to 8.3. Unfortunately postgresql does not offer a live upgrade, thus attempting an automatic upgrade during dist-upgrade is both utterly hard to get right, and utterly hard to recover from if it fails. Therefore the current system is the best we can do, I'm afraid. Martin Hi Martin! So, in this case, as regular user, I expect good documentation in Release notes. Bug#443221: kernel-package: Creates packages for wrong arch when cross-compiling for i386 on amd64
On Monday 13 October 2008, you wrote: well, how is this supposed to work? At this point, make-kpkg just calls dpkg --build; and dpkg selects the name of the .deb (including adding the host architecture the package is being built upon. I'm not sure, but it would be nice if the documentation would at least document the restriction. Currently the cross-compilation option implies that it should be possible to build a kernel image for e.g. sparc on i386, but if it ends up with the wrong arch for the package then that option is IMO pointless. I do know that it is possible to create packages for another arch as we e.g. build kernel udebs for any arch on any arch. The invocation kernel-wedge uses for that is 'buildpackage -b -a$arch', with 'buildpackage' defined as: dpkg-buildpackage -d -us -uc -rfakeroot -tc \ -ICVS -I.svn -I'{arch}' -I.arch-ids $@ (see /usr/share/kernel-wedge/commands/build-arch) Cheers, FJP P.S. I personally don't really care about this BR anymore as with all the problems I had I've stopped using kernel-package completely. Instead I use the 'make deb-pkg' option supplied by the upstream kernel itself which _does_ allow me to cross-build kernel image packages. I use it without any problems to build kernel image packages for arm on amd64. It also saves me huge amounts of build time as it does not clean the entire tree for each build, which is often unnecessary. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#501894: liferea: segfaults when closing a tab with embedded flash content

To reproduce: a) configure liferea to open links in new tab b) open *exactly one* link with embedded flash in new tab c) close that tab If you open the link two or more times, bug won't show. Does this happen if the flash content was embedded in a feed entry and you open the entry in a tab, or would that count as opening two times? I can't seem to reproduce this, but I'm on amd64 and viewing flash with the nspluginwrapper so I'm pretty certain the environment is too different. Forget about that two times or more thing i've said. After playing a little more with it, all that i can say is: it happens or not. Here are two feeds with which it is quite reproducible: http://www.fr-online.de/rss/homepage/index.xml http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/base/standardfeeds/most_viewed?client=ytapi-youtube-browsealt=rsstime=today The first one is of a german newspaper with a lot of flash advertisement, the second is youtubes daily most viewed feed. What i at least can say is that unlike bug #407005, it only happens when the page with the flash content is shown in a tab, and that tab is getting closed. But thats all. Anything else is guessing. For example, with the youtube feed, i've tried opening and closing articles in tabs about 10 times in row without crashing. Following that was a period where everytime i've tried, liferea crashed. All on the same feed and articles :-/ Btw. i'm on i386 and got the following version of flash installed: File name: libflashplayer.so Shockwave Flash 9.0 r115 I wasn't sure about the severity of this, as it causes data-loss of two different kinds: * Your metadata (read/flagged/deleted) get lost All your metadata, or what you had flagged in the session? If it's all of it this is definitely RC. No, just the metadata of the session. But regarding the fact, that i normally never shut down my computer but hibernate it, liferea sessions can be quite long. If i got Lars Lindner right, the database closing happens on a write counting base, not a timed base. Combining these two facts with a small set of feeds and not too much tagging, this might mean losing more than one or two minutes of metadata, maybe even days. * The latest headers have to be downloaded again Well, this is a bother but hardly data-loss. Your right, no data loss. Depending on your connection perhaps costly, but i guess there are not much people using liferea over a slow and expensive connection regularly. Normally i would say it's critical but didn't want to open more release-critical bugs without prior discussion, so this goes as important. Are you losing more than one or two minutes of metadata? If so, I'd say this is As like i've argued above, yes. More than one or two minutes. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As by now, in etch Packages/Sources file, the segment of this package contains illegal for UTF-8 byte sequence(s). Likely, your files are in Latin-1 or same, instead of UTF-8, and contain separate non-ASCII symbols. As a result, the Packages/Sources file(s) is a bit corrupted, in Synaptic info from incorrect fields is N/A. Possibly this command will report error for you (substitute right values): I probably forgot, what to do with tetex-src. Do we need still this package or should be simply remove it? IIRC the only reason to have was that the source code of some programs must be delivered. tetex-src however contains only a subset of the TeX Live packages anyway. The old values that lh_config once generated make little sense to me. Many of them have changed over time anyway. that's manual overriding of variables then. Or is lh_config the only supported interface? and manual tweaks are not allowed? yes. you should *either* only change settings with lh_config *or* know what you do/keep the config consistent yourself. We had a small chat on that yesterday, so it can help to clear some misunderstandings: The simplest test case here is running 'lh_build' in an empty directory (no configuration). This will fail at lh_chroot_install-packages because the list of packages to install includes the two: ${LH_UNION_FILESYSTEM}-modules-2.6-amd64 auto To which both Daniel Bauman and Chris Lamb claimed that an empty configuration is invalid, because it has not been blessed by running lh_config on it. I consider this a bug. In order to resolve this I would suggest to set some variable in lh_config before calling Set_defaults . That would allow Set_defaults to make more informed decisions and specifically avoid those two issues. I'm not actively working on debian-live nowadays. So I guess I won't be get to actually write this soon. Package: snort-mysql Version: 2.7.0-19 Severity: normal After installing Debian Lenny, I removed my ethernet card to replace it by another one. Bug#501996: [VBA Support] Poor compatibility
Noel Power wrote: Hi Renato Hi Noel! Is good to know that you see my problem :-) Sorry to hear that you document doesn't run with our VBA support. The VBA api is vast, we haven't replicated every piece of VBA functionality or every API object. I hate VBA, but this kind of code is used in a lot of companies. This sample file attached in Debian Bug Report #501996 is a great example (I received it from a big client): http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=501996 Your document contains nearly 1000 lines of macro code, so it would be great if you could identify the smallest segments that don't work and relay that information to us ( or me if you like ) as small stand alone macros to demonstrate the problems. And other problem: This macro is not made by me, but I need use it :-( Some instructions are in Instructions sheet and maybe can be useful. Knowing where the failures are will influence what we set about to fix next. Additionally it might be possible to rewrite a non functioning macro so it will work in openoffice and MSO, but to give such advice one also needs to know where things are failing Are you interested in helping? *Of course* I would like to help :-) btw I followed the steps in the bug you fwded to the list, it appears that part of the problem here is that Calc itself doesn't support named ranges at the sheet level, named ranges have a global scope in openoffice, this leads to some inconsistency in the imported data ( and hence errors in the vba attempting to use those ranges ) I did change the named range Tooling_Operation_Description on sheet e-1810_A to Tooling_Operation_Description_New ( and changed the macro code to use that too ) and the steps you describe now seem to work ( but perhaps other things don't ) I go to Tools -- Macro -- Manager Macros -- OOo Basic and click in Edit. I changed all Tooling_Operation_Description to Tooling_Operation_Description_New (only 2 is found and replaced). But I give this error: Type: com.sun.star.uno.RuntimeException Message: . Macro Basic is opened and show me this line error: Set TOP = Worksheets(e-1810_A).Range(Tooling_Operation_Description_New) Best regards, Renato -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#439736: warzone2100: briefings broken
Paul Wise schreef: The briefings screens are broken, they are just black instead of a video or something else. You can still see the text of the campaign objectives after pressing Esc, but it is a bit confusing when there is 'Briefing commences' and then nothing happens until you press Esc. Note that warzone2100 already includes the videos in upstream trunk. This will eventually become 2.2. For packaging purposes, however, keep in mind that the videos themselves are *not* part of our source distribution, we have them in a separate archive. Bug#457174: FD_SETSIZE
Loic's patch is not so about the *number* of file descriptors but about the *largest* file descriptor that can be used in netcat. The previous behaviour (FD_SETSIZE set to 16) only allows for file descriptors numbered from 0 to 15. If netcat is forked from a program which already use those, it will break because the new FD it obtains are too high. About the concern on too many opened file descriptors: this is not a program's job to take care of this, other OS-provided mechanisms such as ulimit already do. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#500740: Some variables don't default correctly
can you *please* show *exactely* how you construct a situation where this can happen (withouth manual ovveride). also see #490290. Let me state once again that we are *not* using the lh_config script, but building the config directory with our own script[1]. Our script does not set all of the LH_* variables, but lets lh_build default a number of values. Lh_build is clearly designed to allow this, but has a number of bugs that make it to default values incorrectly. LH_INITRAMFS is defaulted incorrectly because of the ``else'' at line 130 of defaults.sh. LH_LINUX_PACKAGES is defaulted incorrectly because of incorrect quoting at line 448 of defaults.sh. Regards, Juliusz [1] In case you're into that kind of thing, it is available on http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/repos/juppix/makejuppix.sh Beware, it's buggy right now. pgp8zibThoZNr.pgp Description: PGP signature

The result of the discussion was: - this is either a problem/missing feature in libpoppler and hence specific to Debian (the staically linked version does not show the problem), or - a decryption problem solved in pdfTeX 1.40.6. AFAICT, the result of the discussion was not unambiguous. Olivier, what do you think? Should we wait until 1.40.6 has hit Debian (3.1415926-1.40.9 is in TL 2008) and then test again? Hi Brice! On Thu, 14 Jun 2007 20:26:09 +0200, Brice Goglin wrote: For the record, upstream ships several manpages like this one in its xorg-docs repository. Bug#501444: gnome-screensaver: ignores external keyboard/mouse
Tried it a few days but it seems that if I start gnome-screensaver later on from a terminal, the problem doesn't appear. Interesting. Could you compare the environment of the gnome-screensaver process in both cases? You can have a look at /proc/$(pidof gnome-screensaver)/environ. The difference is (diff -auNrBbd normal.txt debug.txt): -DISPLAY=:0.0 +DISPLAY=:0.1 Looks like a bad interaction with your multi-head setup. What happens if you launch ???DISPLAY=:0.0 gnome-screensaver --debug??? instead? Attached you'll find the requested logfile. Bug#486875: snmpd option syntax changed
reopen 486875 = thanks Hi, 2008/10/11 Thomas Viehmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Matthieu, as per the help output of snmpd and snmpcmd(1) (referenced by snmpd(8)) the logging command line options snmpd have indeed changed. This might be inconvenient, but I fail to see how this is a bug in the common sense of the word. I know that the logging command line have changed but the way I want corresponds to the current (5.4.1~dfsg-9) snmpcmd man page: = LOGGING OPTIONS The mechanism and destination to use for logging of warning and error messages can be controlled by passing various parameters to the -L flag. -LeLog messages to the standard error stream. -Lf FILE Log messages to the specified file. -LoLog messages to the standard output stream. -Ls FACILITY Log messages via syslog, using the specified facility ('d' for LOG_DAEMON, 'u' for LOG_USER, or '0'-'7' for LOG_LOCAL0 through LOG_LOCAL7). There are also upper case versions of each of these options, which allow the corresponding logging mechanism to be restricted to certain priorities of message. Using standard error logging as an example: -LE pri will log messages of priority 'pri' and above to standard error. -LE p1-p2 will log messages with priority between 'p1' and 'p2' (inclu- sive) to standard error. For -LF and -LS the priority specification comes before the file or facility token. The priorities recognised are: 0 or ! for LOG_EMERG, 1 or a for LOG_ALERT, 2 or c for LOG_CRIT, 3 or e for LOG_ERR, 4 or w for LOG_WARNING, 5 or n for LOG_NOTICE, 6 or i for LOG_INFO, and 7 or d for LOG_DEBUG. Normal output is (or will be!) logged at a priority level of LOG_NOTICE = As I understand, snmpd -LS 0-4 d is wellformed and mean: log via syslog under facility LOG_DAEMON restricted to priorities LOG_EMERG to LOG_WARNING. Kind regards T.
