Bug#419600: mondo: Fails to create images larger than 1000MB when archiving to hard disk
Hi Simon, Sorry for the very late response! From the mondo-archive.log I can see that mkisofs failed to create the ISO image. I think this may be because of a problem with creating larger files on the Iomega Rev drive. Could you try manually creating a file larger than 1000MB, e.g. with 3380MB size directly on the mounted Iomega Rev drive to see whether that works, e.g. by doing this: dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/rev/test.dat bs=1M count=4380 I use 4380MB image size all the time with mondoarchive and I have not experienced this problem. However, if this is still an issue for you, it would be great if you could then also try the latest package version (1:2.2.7-1 at the moment). Given that you reported this quite some time ago, this may not be an issue for you anymore. It would be great if you could give your feedback either way. (I'll close the bug in four weeks time if I don't hear anything, but active confirmation from your end would be most welcome.) Bug#441868: mondo: ext2 initrd fails to get mounted / unmounted
Hi Björn, Sorry for taking so long to get back to you! Thank you also for your detailed analysis of the issue. I have not seen this behaviour before other than in the context of something actually being wrong with loop devices, so this is a bit weird. However, I may be mistaken but I think mindi is not trying to mount an ext2 here but a floppy image which would be (v)fat. The system can't find the default codepage 437 and therefore the mount fails. It would be great if you could try again with a stock Debian kernel rather than a custom kernel. If that does indeed show the same issue, it would also be great if you could try with the latest version (mondo 1:2.2.7-1 atm). Given that you reported this quite some time ago, this may not be an issue for you anymore. It would be great if you could give your feedback either way. Bug#491940: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the clamav-data package
Quoting Christian Perrier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Dear maintainer of clamav-data and Debian translators, Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the clamav-data Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS. I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. Hmmm, I now realise that clamav-data is somewhat special and it probably makes no sense in NMU'ing it. Am I correct ? signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#431871: mondo 2.22: vi again + grub fails loop
Hello Hugo, Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Sorry also that we had a regression in regards to the use of find_my_editor() as described by yourself below. The latest version (1:2.2.7-1) does have the correct code, so this should be resolved. Also, I have /etc/grub.conf as symbolic link to /boot/grub/menu.lst: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2006-05-27 21:57 /etc/grub.conf - /boot/grub/menu.lst and this is working with no problems for me. Bug#502690: jwchat: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update
Package: jwchat Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors. If you do not already use it, you might consider using the podebconf-report-po utility, which helps warning translators about changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates changes (even typo corrections). Then leave about one week for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which requires time). podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-) Example use (from your package build tree): $ podebconf-report-po This will go through debian/po/*.po files, find those needing an update, extract the translators data from these files and prepare a mail to send to these translators (you can also use the --languageteam switch to also mail the mail addresses listed in Language-Team field). You can also use this utility to request for new translations: $ podebconf-report-po --call This will send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the needed information and material for new translators to add new languages to your supported languages. If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of courseThis message is generic..:-) -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.25-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash # SOME DESCRIPTIVE TITLE. # Copyright (C) YEAR THE PACKAGE'S COPYRIGHT HOLDER # This file is distributed under the same license as the PACKAGE package. # # Florentin Duneau [EMAIL PROTECTED], 2006. msgid msgstr Project-Id-Version: jwchat\n Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] POT-Creation-Date: 2008-10-18 11:40+0200\n PO-Revision-Date: 2006-07-28 17:47+0200\n Last-Translator: Florentin Duneau [EMAIL PROTECTED]\n Language-Team: French [EMAIL PROTECTED]\n MIME-Version: 1.0\n Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8\n Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n X-Generator: KBabel 1.11.2\n Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=(n 1);\n #. Bug#496329: All translations broken by this fix
Logical consequence of the fix for #496429all translations have been fuzzied. Even more, I think that the chosen wording does not even fit the commonly accept writing style for short descriptions of debconf templates: no leading article. The correct wording should have been: Name of Apache's virtual server used for jwchat: While at it, you could of course have fixed the other template: URL of the jabber server: (dropping the leading the and avoiding possesive form) *Then*, *before uploading*, sending a call for translation updates would have been appreciated: podebconf-report-po --call --withtranslators --languageteam with something liek a 10 days delay. Instead of this, one of jwchat templates is currently no longer translated...except in German. Sad. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#500807: Looking at the backtrace ...
I took a quick glance at the backtraces. The first problem looks like Icedove got a piece of mail with an invalid MINE type which is crashing Icedove, which is a bug that should be sent upstream. If you can isolate the email thats causing that crash, that would be vastly helpful. The second one just seems to be that Icedove stalled downloading a large attachment; if you had left it running, it likely would have finished (although I agree a progress bar would have been nice). Icedove 2.0.0.17 was just uploaded to unstable today, it may fix your issue. If you can test with that version, it would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, the swedish translation of clamav-data is incomplete in the sense that the translator never replied to my request given in bug #491940 to look at clamav-getfiles' translations as well. It makes sense to update -data and -getfiles together and I won't do double work, so the swedish translation is going to stay out until I definetely know that swedish clamav-getfiles is up-to-date as well. You might want to go ahead with the clamav-data NMU, but it will be overridden with the automatic version on the next maintainer upload. So the correct way to do things is not to ignore the package's maintainer and to actually answer his questions. Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. Hi Stuart, release team, as a mere recompile on AMD64 solves #493940 (I have verified this), let's just have that (and get it into / do it also on lenny): conspy_1.4-1, miscompilation RC bug #493940, 1, amd64 Then the bug is fixed already without interfering with Russel's plans, I'll take care of closing the bug as soon as this has happened. Do you have debug output which shows what is going on? I can't reproduce the bug. If you could set debug=1 in the config file, trigger the bug and send the relevant parts of /var/log/apt-cacher/error.log that would be a great help. I think the comments in that function are actually incorrect. The call to sysread doesn't actually have to contain at least one complete line. Bug#502618: partman: /dev/mapper/vg0-home is apparently in use by the system
On Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 12:20:34AM +0200, Marc Haber wrote: On Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 06:01:12PM +0200, Jeroen Dekkers wrote: I currently have the same problem. The reason the logical volume is in use seems to be that when you finish partitioning and partman goes to the stage of creating the filesystems, the system has suddenly created partitions on top of the volumes. That means there is a /dev/mapper/vg0-homep1, which uses /dev/mapper/vg0-home and makes it impossible to create a filesystem there. Yes, that's exactly the situation on my system. I tried installing twice today, and in the first attempt it even showed the homep1 LV in the partition list in the Installer. In the second attempt, it didn't, but the homep1 LV was there when I looked in /dev/mapper. So far, it looks like the partitions are generated when one says Write changes to disk, but they don't show up when one uses fdisk to look into the LVs. Strange. A workaround is to partition with the Debian installer, abort and reboot into a live CD (I used grml, which I highly recommend for all rescue operations), format the file systems from there, restart the installer and partitioner, tell it the intended mount points, but forbid it to format the partitions, tell it _NOT_ to use the swap partition and ignore the resulting error message. After that, the installation is able to continue. Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. One could even go as far as replacing the ?? with the default priority, but I don't think it should be done. This would work for insserv and sysv-rc, but not file-rc (but I don't care too much about file-rc, tbh. And the popcon stats of file-rc do not justify any special treatment of file-rc imho). Agreed. Since this is purely an optimization step, not having an effect with file-rc is nothing to be concerned about. It also doesn't take into account any local modifications to the stop priorities (when using sysv-rc alone). We are thus not 100% policy compliant, but I think we can ignore that in that special case. Right, see what I wrote above. But since we don't need stop priorities at all in these cases, removing them is valid on upgrades IMHO. The major complain I got on debian-release (when we discussed the same topic for avahi-daemon) was, that the update-rc.d remove approach didn't preserve disabled services, which the above method would do (i.e. services which were disabled before the upgrade were enabled again afterwards). Right, I never accepted those either. So in summary, I think the suggested method above would indeed be the best we can do atm. I agree. Especially the former package needs to go, since dvi2tty is orphaned and not in testing (thus Lenny would have an unresolvable Recommends:). For that reason I mark the bug as important. OK, fine. We'll fix that. Thanks. That's in fact the only thing I'm concerned about for Lenny, since Recommends: is essentially Depends: now. The rest are merely suggestions for avoiding bloat (well, not that it matters too much, given the size of texlive :-) ). Similarly, texlive-base-bin's Recommends: perl-tk seems too strong to me. I am a fairly regular LaTeX user and have never ever needed it. texdoctk needs it, and fails to start if it is not installed. Calling the command on the CLI causes and error message and from a menu it calls xmessage to tell about the missing lib. Ah, thanks for the explanation (I never used texdoctk either, it seems). This was implemented about 2003 and we could lower the dep to recommend. Should we further lower to Suggests? Lowering to Suggests: would essentially preserve the semantics of earlier Debian releases (where Recommends: wasn't installed by default). I have the usual texlive stuff installed, but not perl-tk. The failure mode seems to be exemplary good: $ texdoctk texdoctk: you must have the perl-tk package installed to use this script BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/texdoctk line 34. So it tells you exactly what's missing. Bug#502699: False positives in clickjacking detection
Package: mozilla-noscript Version: 1.8.2.1-1 Several web sites incorrectly report clickjacking attempts. This happens with the POSIX spec at http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/, but it is somewhat difficult to reproduce. Bug#502702: chm2pdf is nowhere close to releasable
X-Debbugs-RC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Package: chm2pdf Severity: grave Justification: is between unusable and dangerous for non-trivial chm files Version: 0.9-2 Hi, I've been looking at chm2pdf's RC bug. There are so much more problems that releasing lenny seems totally out of question for quality reasons. Some items in addition to the tempfile RC bug (only the ones that have turned up in the attempt to get it to convert some chm to pdf, I have not specifically looked at anything): - the calls to subprograms using os.system are not using proper escaping, this is a security hazard (Raphael's patch proposed to fix the rm -f, the the rest is just as bad), - the code looses perfectly good data in a way that cannot be turned off (note that the typical chm files I found that related to free software were api docs which are loosing a big deal without links to the right place on the page in per-module lists of functions): # Replace links of the form somefile.html#894 with somefile0206.html # The following will match anchors like 'a href=temp0206.html#894' and will store the # 'temp0206.html' in backreference 1. # The replace string will then replace it with 'a href=temp0206.html', i.e. it will # take away the '#894' part. # This is because the numbers after the '#' are often wrong or non-existent. It is # better to link to an existing chapter than to a non-existent part of an existing # chapter. - The implementation is inacceptably inefficient: The convert_to_pdf function's uses the following (match_strings and replace_garbled_strings are of length = number of pages) and this in in a loop over all pages. This is completely bogus (in terms of what they lengthily explain to try to achieve) and unacceptably inefficient, this can readily be implemented in linear time without effort. # Substitutions in 1st pass: we replace the original filenames with their # corresponding garbled equivalents. for match_string in match_strings: replace_string = replace_garbled_strings[match_strings.index(match_string)] page = re.sub(match_string, replace_string, page) # Substitutuions in the 2nd pass: we replace the garbled filenames with the correct # ones. for match_string in replace_garbled_strings: replace_string = replace_strings[replace_garbled_strings.index(match_string)] page = re.sub(match_string, replace_string, page) chm2pdf never has been in a Debian release and it should not be before it gets better. These bugs are in a lot of packages, but can be easily worked around by purging the package instead of just removing it. It's actually my fault: as the maintainer, I'd consider those bugs to be RC for my packages, in the sense that I wouldn't want to be such bugs in lenny for my packages, and I said this to Frans when he first told me about the bugs. Since you are of different opinion, let me know if a package with a fix for this could be granted a freeze exception or not, so that I know if I should prepare the upload or if it would be wasted time. Well, the maintainer's opinion is indeed also a reason for RC and the bugs are ugly enough that I would grant a freeze exception. Bug#499582: upgrade-reports: upgrade etch to lenny (remove some paquets + problem with xorg.conf)
Hi, I've run into a similar problem: after upgrading from etch to lenny, the gui would get stuck after the login: I would get a blank screen with nothing moving. I was a little stressed so I didn't think much and I downloaded the CD1 ISO of the lenny full install, and reinstalled and now I don't get the graphical login at all instead I get a moving box that says: Not Optimum Mode Recommended Mode: 1280x1024 60Hz I've googled for the first line of text and found a few people with Samsung SyncMaster screens (I have a 710v in that series), but didn't found a solution for me. The xorg.conf file after all this is similar to the one posted by the bug opener in his first mail (before the replacement). But I didn't kept the xorg.conf file from my etch install (unlike the bug opener), so I wonder what I'll do now (I can reinstall etch temporarily just to get that file but I'll see what I get with Knoppix). I have Intel Pentium D820, Asus P5VD2-MX and graphic card Via P4M890. kernel 2.6.24-1-amd64. I'm not sure what other information is needed, please tell me how to get it. Also since I know French I can translate approximately the other problem he had: Once he had a grey screen and the mouse wasn't moving, he used Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to terminal mode and then back to graphic mode with Ctrl+Alt+F7 and then all mas normal. With Etch he never had things like that. Thanks, Nethanel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#501630: gnupg: breaks symlink for secret keyring
On Wed, 08 Oct 2008, Ian Zimmerman wrote: The GNU Privacy Handbook says: Safely storing your private key is important, but there is a cost. Ideally, you would keep the private key on a removable, write-protected disk such as a floppy disk, and you would use it on a single-user machine not connected to a network. However, it turns out gpg makes following this advice hard. If ~/.gnupg/secring.gpg is a symlink (in my case, to a file on a USB fob), and the keyring changes (for example, deleting a public-private key pair), gpg breaks the symlink and creates a new file where the symlink was, instead of modifying the target of the symlink. That's probably a side-effect of safely updating keyrings: write to a temporary file, then move the now consistent new keyring in its proper place. If you want to have your secret keyring some place else you should use the --secret-keyring option (or secret-keyring in your gpg config file). -- | .''`. ** Debian GNU/Linux ** Peter Palfrader | : :' : The universal http://www.palfrader.org/ | `. `' Operating System | `-http://www.debian.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#502654: hunspell-fr: French dictionary is not working for locales outside of France
Francois Marier wrote: On 2008-10-19 at 03:22:32, Rene Engelhard wrote: They apparently use the myspell dictionaires in /usr/share/myspell/dicts/ and since hunspell-fr (rightfully) conflicts on myspell-fr, then the necessary dictionaires are missing in these other apps. Installing this patched hunspell-fr package fixes the problems. myspell-fr and hunspell-fr come from different authors/source packages etc. Sure, but hunspell-fr conflicts on myspell-fr and myspell-fr-gut so it has to provide the same dictionaries otherwise non-France users will be missing a dictionary. Where did hunspell-fr claim it's drop-in replacement for myspell-fr? It simply conflicts due to the filename. I should have been explained myself better here. The languages are so similar (same spelling and all) that the paper-based dictionaries from France are also used in other countries as well. The differences lie mostly OK. That I wondered. Also, if you look at myspell-fr and myspell-fr-gut, they both use the same dictionary for all 5 locales [0]. So I think that it's fine for hunspell-fr to do the same. Already done so with the 3.0.0 packages, will add it to 2.4, too, but getting the freeze exception is your job I guess ;) Grüße/Regards, René -- .''`. Bug#502643: [Pkg-alsa-devel] Bug#502643: alsamixer: pressing Alt and any key causes a quit
* Daniel Watkins [081018 22:30 +0200] Package: alsa-utils Version: 1.0.16-2 Severity: minor Pressing Alt and a different key at the same time causes alsamixer to quit cleanly. It should probably just ignore them. Bug or feature? Anyway, this has to be filed upstream. Bug#493940: status?
On Sun, 2008-10-19 at 09:57 +0200, Thomas Viehmann wrote: on #493940 you stated that you would upload a new version on 2008-10-10 and expect the recompile that is involved to fix that bug. So far nothing to that end has happened. As RC bugs are on the radar of quite a lot of people these days, what is your plan here? Note also that we're in a phase of the release where the release team prefers to see targeted fixes uploaded to unstable. My upload is done via a sponsor. I passed version 1.5 onto him a week or so ago, but not much has happened as yet. This may be because I did not explicitly tell him what to do with it, but in any case I will give him a prod. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#502285: first upgrade fails, xserver-xorg-video-ati is removed
On Sat, 18 Oct 2008 11:23:07 +0200 Julien Cristau [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 09:33:00 +0200, Sven Joachim wrote: As you can see, I accepted the third solution which actually upgraded, not removed, xserver-xorg-video-all. The actual upgrade then ran through without a hitch. This was not the case in my upgrade. I used apt-get and not aptitude, and I was faced with a removal of the ati driver too. I reinstalled the driver, and then later when I upgraded the entire system again the ati driver was removed. I had to manually reinstall it after the complete upgrade.
