Bug#510415: tech-ctte: Qmail inclusion (or not) in Debian
On Tue, 06 Jan 2009, Ian Jackson wrote: Raphael Hertzog writes (Bug#510415: tech-ctte: Qmail inclusion (or not) in Debian): On Thu, 01 Jan 2009, Joerg Jaspert wrote: Yet, we do see that there are people who want Qmail, and instead of maintaining it in an own repository want it in Debian. As it is unlikely that the positions of the Qmail supporters and us will change soon to let us find a solution that works for both sides (the positions are basically black and white here), we ask you to help resolve it, by a ruling on this matter, following Constitution §6.1.3. What constitutes for you a solution that works for both sides? I think you have misread Joerg. I did the same at first. Joerg is saying that he thinks that there is _not_ any sensible compromise and _not_ anything that will work for both sides. Indeed I did. - several shortcomings related to the MTA behaviour, including the backscatter spam issue, failing to use secondary MXs, ignoring RFC1894, and unbundling of outgoing messages (yay for traffic/resource waste)[2], thus being unsupportably buggy (Policy 2.2.1) All those are good reasons to not choose the software as a user but not to not include them in Debian. We don't know how our users are going to use it and there might be use cases where those shortcomings are not problematic. I think this is a dangerous line of argument. Many of Qmail's behaviours are terrible in the global Internet and we have no effective way to prevent (or even warn) our users from running Qmail in that situation. We do have ways to warn users of the package. We can, for example, add an annoying debconf note to explain the problems of qmail and point them to some documentation provided in the package. Indeed practically the only reason why people want Qmail is because they believe the hype about how ultra secure it is - which is relevant (if you believe it) in precisely the circumstances where Qmail's problems are most severe. When Debian was running it on lists.debian.org, it was primarily for performance reasons IIRC (a listmaster of that time can correct me). It might be that it's no more the selling factor nowadays, but I find it presomptuous to believe to know why users are interested in it, without some more serious study. Kalle Kivimaa writes (Re: Bug#510415: tech-ctte: Qmail inclusion (or not) in Debian): I think the more abstract question here is: If a software easily causes problems for other machines in a network, should that software be allowed into Debian, even if the software doesn't bring any new functionality? Yes, I think that's an excellent way to put the question. The answer is obviously `no'. I don't think the answer is so clear cut. ping -f can also easily causes problems for other machines in a network. I know we're speaking of the default configuration of a mail daemon and that the comparison doesn't really hold (although it does with the phrasing selected). My main problem is that not including the software in Debian doesn't give any chance to improve in our infrastructure and that the ftpmasters is not the right body to decide on the quality of a package (see below), except for some limited policy compliance check. Either steps need to be taken to prevent these problems (for the network as a whole, for other parts of Debian who need to interact with the package, and for the user who runs it) - or the package should not be included. I can buy this reasoning when it comes to inclusion in a stable release but not for inclusion in experimental (or sid if the proper RC bugs are filed immediately). It's very similar to the reportbug-ng problems that explain that the software is not part of Lenny. Bug#510415: tech-ctte: Qmail inclusion (or not) in Debian
On Tue, 06 Jan 2009, Kalle Kivimaa wrote: Well, I personally am against the Qmail in Debian at it's current state because I consider it to have at least one critical security bug and several other RC bugs, and I don't see how to solve the critical bug without a serious rewrite. I agree that Qmail has lots of bugs some of which are critical for the health of the internet at large, and I think it needs a period in experimental to get those bugs resolved. That said, the serious problems that it has are problems that are present in the qmail-src packages, IIUC. The ideal end state is a Qmail package that resolves all of these problems, and it'd be better to have such a package than our current state. I don't see the arguments we've made as difficult to justify. If we felt that we couldn't justify them, we wouldn't have made them in the first place and grudginly accepted the package. I agree with the arguments about the problems with the package; I'm just slightly concerned about the method with which they are dealt with. Actually, I *am* a fan of Qmail, but I think it is outdated in today's internet, and anybody considering to use it as a MTA should think very hard of the pros and cons. I agree as well; that said, if someone in Debian wants to put in the work to make Qmail have more pros than cons so those people who are going to run Qmail anyway can do so without bothering the rest of us, more power to htem. Bug#505270: [Splashy-devel] Bug#505270: my patch (a fast way to deal with this bug)
Hi Time, As indicated already, please consider this patch for the next version of splashy. On normal operation, the time isn't reached anyway, and on slow computers / boot media it could perhaps take long time. It would be annoying if this bug would be reintroduced just because a particular machine or boot takes a bit longer. How about making it 10s? On 2000-07-27 23:46 +0200, Bill Wohler wrote: Package: emacs20 Version: 20.7-2 Severity: normal In /etc/mailcap, the highest priority entries come first, followed by lower priority entries. The mailcap-parse-mailcaps parsing scheme doesn't seem to check for existing entries before adding entries to its internal cache (which should be updated if the mailcap files change, by the way). For example, my /etc/mailcap contains the following three entries for text/html: text/html; gnome-help-browser '%s';test=test $DISPLAY != text/html; /usr/bin/lynx -force_html '%s'; needsterminal; description=HTML Text; nametemplate=%s.html text/html; /usr/bin/lynx -dump -force_html '%s'; copiousoutput; description=HTML Text; nametemplate=%s.html When I use `b' in gnus to display a text/html body part, the last, lowest priority entry `lynx -dump -force_html %s' was used rather than `gnome-help-browser %s' at the top of the file. However, you don't have to run gnus to reproduce the problem; simply run (mailcap-mime-info text/html). This seems to be solved in emacs21 and later. I get these results: (mailcap-mime-info text/html) = /usr/bin/sensible-browser '%s' (mailcap-mime-info application/pdf) = kpdf '%s' Both times this is the first entry in /etc/mailcap for the respective MIME type, so I think we should close this bug. Bug#505270: Delay
I think a delay of 1 second is probably five times too long even in worst cases, but if I didn't make mistakes in the code, it won't matter because a signal will arrive quickly. Bug#510966: latest mgp package doesn't display any presentation, not even included examples
Package: mgp Version: 1.13a-1 Severity: critical After running an 'apt-get upgrade' on my debian unstable, the latest mgp version was installed. Unfortunately, this mgp version does nothing but show a black screen, refuse to terminate on user request and eat all CPU and memory. This can be easily reproduced by running mgp on one of the examples included with it, e.g. the /usr/share/doc/mgp/examples/sample.mgp I've tried all options that would make sense, including -o / -O / -x vflib / -x freetype / -l / -V / -F 0,0,0. The behaviour is always consistent and always reproducible. strace()ing the binary shows repeated calls to brk(), and top indicates the process is eating up all cpu cycles available. The program cannot be terminated by the usual 'q' key, since apparently kbd input is never processed and the process never reasds from its libX11 filedescriptor again. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.27-rc7 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages mgp depends on: ii imlib111.9.15-7 Imlib is an imaging library for X ii libc6 2.7-18GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-3 generic font configuration library ii libgif44.1.6-6 library for GIF images (library) ii libice62:1.0.4-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libjpeg62 6b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libm17n-0 1.5.2-1 a multilingual text processing lib ii libmng11.0.9-1 Multiple-image Network Graphics li ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2 PNG library - runtime ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Session Management library ii libtiff4 3.8.2-11 Tag Image File Format (TIFF) libra ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-2 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxft22.1.12-3 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxmu62:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii perl [perl5] 5.10.0-19 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime Versions of packages mgp recommends: ii libjpeg-progs 6b-14 Programs for manipulating JPEG fil ii netpbm [pnmtopng] 2:10.0-12 Graphics conversion tools ii sharutils 1:4.6.3-1 shar, unshar, uuencode, uudecode Versions of packages mgp suggests: pn asiya24-vfont none (no description available) ii emacsen-common1.4.17 Common facilities for all emacsen ii ghostscript 8.63.dfsg.1-2 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript/PDF ii gsfonts-x11 0.21 Make Ghostscript fonts available t pn texlive none (no description available) pn ttf-freefont none (no description available) ii ttf-kochi-gothic 1.0.20030809-8 Kochi Subst Gothic Japanese TrueTy ii ttf-kochi-mincho 1.0.20030809-8 Kochi Subst Mincho Japanese TrueTy ii ttf-opensymbol1:2.4.1-15 The OpenSymbol TrueType font ii ttf-sazanami-gothic 20040629-2 Sazanami Gothic Japanese TrueType ii ttf-sazanami-mincho 20040629-2 Sazanami Mincho Japanese TrueType -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi Tim, I think a delay of 1 second is probably five times too long even in worst cases, but if I didn't make mistakes in the code, it won't matter because a signal will arrive quickly. Exactly, so it wouldn't hurt to increase it. Slower machines don't necessarily make the race condition more likely to occur. Well, if the directFB initialization takes longer, the race condition is more likely to occur AFAICS. It would be a lot longer, though. The window of error is only the execution of a few lines of code. This bug was triggered simply by moving from inittop to premount. Milliseconds of difference. But even with the previous code, the race condition could have occured. The point I'm making is why take the (probably very small) chance that this bug shows up again on systems that might be different from what we are testing on now. Bug#510977: aptitude: Strange Norwegian localization error
Package: aptitude Version: 0.4.11.11-1~lenny1 Severity: minor Tags: l10n In the screen you get to after choosing g, you usually get to select/deselect automatically-selected, recommended, and suggested packages. When selecting a package, the info pane shows its relation to other packages that will be installed. In the Norwegian translation, these texts seem a little off. Packages that will be installed because of a Depends say, e.g. wine avhenger av libwine-gl, meaning wine depends on libwine-gl. That one's OK, I guess, just listing it for completeness. Packages that are listed because of a Recommends say, e.g. devscripts krever equivs, meaning devscripts requires equivs or devscripts demands equivs, which doesn't seem right. Packages that are listed because of a Suggests say, e.g. devscripts anbefaler mutt, meaning devscript recommends mutt. Looks like winecfg's localized resources are inadvertently only defined for en_US, not for en_*, causing a fallback. I guess that's a bug, but it's not that LC_MESSAGES isn't respected. Bug#510983: dar: Print errors during restore in summary on finish
Package: dar Version: 2.3.8-3 Severity: wishlist Hi, it would be helpful, if dar would print the errors occured during restore at the end. Why? When I was on the konsole restoring a 120 GB /home file system, dar printed at the very end in the summary something like 2 filesystem errors. Since I didn't save the dar output in a file, I didn't know how to get any details about the error, because the console history is only a few pages. Thus, I removed everything and extracted the 120 GB again, this time saving the dar output (there were two CRC checksum errors in two irrelevant files). If dar would have printed the error messages at the end, they would have been very likely accessible using page-up in the konsole. Thanks for the nice dar program! Bug#510984: perl: reworking .ph files
Package: perl Version: 5.10.0-19 Severity: wishlist Quoting Brendan in an oldish mail: .ph files are an abomination which should go away. h2ph does a reasonable job, but does screw up on occasion. I reduced the headers which were processed to the minimum I believed necessary (debian/headers) based on a grep of require lines in the Debian packages at the time, supplied patches to h2lp and did some post-processing (debian/fixheaders) to fix problems. This was mostly successful when I first made those changes, but subsequent versions of glibc introduced new and whackier syntax which defeated the h2ph parsing, in some instances only impacting certain architectures. My plan, unrealised to date, was to identify the specific constants users were interested in and to have a compiled program which generated a limited subset of the .ph files, removing the problems of trying to parse headers by punting to the compiler. Something like: #include sys/ioctl.h int main() { /* ... */ printf(sub TIOCGWINSZ() { %d }\n, TIOCGWINSZ); /* ... */ } Filing a bug to document the plan. At least #379757, #416968, and #505289 are related. -- Niko Tyni nt...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#505065: squid: a previous bad configuration causes start/restart to fail
Package: squid Version: 2.7.STABLE3-1 Followup-For: Bug #505065 I've encountered this problem on both 'etch' and current 'lenny' versions. This is one reproducable scenario: squid was running just fine and I've modified this following line by adding 'tproxy'. http_port 3128 transparent With this change, the squid service cannot be restarted or started: Restarting Squid HTTP proxy: squidFATAL: Bungled squid.conf line 1113: http_port 3128 transparent tproxy Squid Cache (Version 2.7.STABLE3): Terminated abnormally. failed! vision:~# lsof -i tcp:3128; netstat -atnpe | grep 3128; pgrep -fl sq 987 /usr/sbin/squid -D -YC So, the service was stopped but the process just hangs and I had to kill it. But it will not start/restart unless I remove these files: vision:~# rm -fv /var/spool/squid/swap.state* removed `/var/spool/squid/swap.state' removed `/var/spool/squid/swap.state.last-clean' (or maybe the first one is enough) In conclusion, this should be done on restart to fix unclean restarts. Bug#510989: upgrading ttf fonts make text in some programs unreadable
Package: ttf-dejavu Version: 2.28-1 Severity: normal After upgrading ttf-dejavu cyrillic text in iceweasel bacame unreadable (letters are still Cyrillic, and readable, but words look like made with random password generator), that was fixed after restarting iceweasel. It can be bacause: 1. Font was open by Iceweasel and during upgrade it was overwritten in-place (instead of creating temporary file and then moving it, iceweasel could use deleted file with old contents) 2. Information about glyph offsets/numbers is cached somewhere (Iceweasel, freetype...), and is not updated after font upgrade. And then new file was opened and cached information was used to get glyphs from it. 3. Fontconfig caches were overwritten in-place during upgrade. 4. Iceweasel keeps font files open, but reads fontconfig caches time-to-time. lsof shows that iceweasel keeps ttf files open, and I think dpkg does not overwrite files in-place, so this is probably case 3. But I dont have time now to ivestigate further. This bug probably not specific to ttf-dejavu/iceweasel/Cyrillic glyphs, and probably can be reproduced with fonts that change significantly during upgrade. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.28 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=uk_UA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages ttf-dejavu depends on: ii ttf-dejavu-core 2.28-1 Vera font family derivate with add ii ttf-dejavu-extra 2.28-1 Vera font family derivate with add ttf-dejavu recommends no packages. ttf-dejavu suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#510990: segfault caused by libpam-mount clobbers cron for encrypted home directories
Package: libpam-mount Version: 0.44-1+lenny3 Severity: important Tags: patch Per cron bug 484122 some (all?) users who are mounting their encrypted home directory with libpam-mount have been seeing a constant stream of segfaults in cron.
