Bug#523720: RM: chbg -- ROM; abandoned upstream; low popcon; RC and RG bugs; better alternatives available
Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal Please remove package chbg from experimental; source and binaries. It is dead upstream (no release since 2001), and since I uploaded it to Debian better alternatives have appeared (such as gsetroot, gbackground, idesk, ...). Some Debian-local work has been done in the past to fix bugs in it, I tried to port it to gtk2 (instead gtk1), but the porting needs too work for a program with low popcon. Also the package was removed from testing and unstable one year ago (bug #477686). -- Regards. -- Anibal Avelar (FixXxeR) http://fixxxer.cc GPG: 83B64656 - C143 4AD8 B017 53FA B742 D6AA CEEA F9F3 83B6 4656 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#497523: NEWS?
Quoting Joey Hess (jo...@debian.org): If upstream is really going to disable tapping by default, and Debian is not going to see fit to override them, then at the very least this needs to be well documented in the NEWS file. It's very disconcerting to have tapping just stop working after an upgrade, as happened to me today (to 1.1.0-1). Seconded. I'd appreciate any hint that would help me reinstating tapping. These things are among the things that have always been working magically for me, so I have no clue *at all* about where to look to reinstate tapping. So, in case there is a NEWS file, I think it should explain how to restore a working tappingthough I would very much prefer that things are kept as is, to respect the principle of least surprise. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Also I have noticed that if I try to start radvd and one of the interfaces has no link detected, radvd won't start at all on any interface. This is bad because it means if one interface is down or doesn't come up in time, then nothing IPv6 will work - including on other interfaces that were working properly. (note: on the interface in question, the Linux interface was always up and running, and the address and routing information is hard coded for this interface - it doesn't use dhcp or anything else - the only thing that happened was the wireless access point attached to this port died and was manually reset). -- Brian May br...@microcomaustralia.com.au -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.93.2 Severity: wishlist File: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools Since 12.001, kernel-package generated images no longer call any initramfs generating command, instead relying on a postinst hook to do it when necessary. Bug#521617: libnss-ldapd: tls_reqcert never doesn't work
Arthur de Jong wrote: Sorry to not reply sooner. On Sat, 2009-03-28 at 16:57 -0700, Jamie Heilman wrote: With 0.6.7 if I have tls_reqcert never in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf then nslcd can connect to my ldap servers (which unfortunately have certificate problems and are outside of my administrative control) and things work quite happily. The switch to 0.6.8 broke this capability (almost surely the clean the environment and set LDAPNOINIT change is responsible), even when I put tls_reqcert never in my /etc/nss-ldapd.conf, which notably hasn't been well tested according to the warning messages. Could you give me an summary of /etc/ldap/ldap.conf and /etc/nss-ldapd.conf? That would make it easier to track this down. /etc/ldap/ldap.conf is real simple: ldap_version3 basedc=marchex,dc=com tls_reqcert never /etc/nss-ldapd.conf for 0.6.7 which works is: uri ldaps://id.sea/ uri ldaps://id3.sea/ uri ldaps://id4.sea/ uri ldaps://id1.sea/ uri ldaps://id2.sea/ base dc=marchex,dc=com base passwd ou=users,dc=marchex,dc=com base shadow ou=users,dc=marchex,dc=com base group ou=groups,dc=marchex,dc=com uid nslcd gid nslcd /etc/nss-ldapd.conf for 0.6.8 which fails to work is the same as 0.6.7's with the addition of tls_reqcert never Without tls_reqcert never in /etc/nss-ldapd.conf I just got this: Mar 28 03:39:41 deadhour nslcd[11653]: [6c6125] failed to bind to LDAP server ldaps://id.sea/: Can't contact LDAP server: Operation now in progress [...] While I'm not surprised it couldn't establish the connection due to not being able to verify the certs, the error message could stand to be more informative. The problem is that I've no idea how to get better error messages out of the OpenLDAP library. Can't contact LDAP server is what I get from OpenLDAP and Operation now in progress is what I get from errno (which may or may not be useful). Running nslcd in debug mode (nslcd -d) could give more details in some situations. Yeah, the errno appears to largely irrelevant from what I can see with an strace against nslcd and what's actually going on during the first and subsequent queries. Debug mode output (-d) isn't of any help either. From strace its possible to see nslcd is attempting to communicate with my ldap servers, sends some data back and forth, but gives up eventually. After adding tls_reqcert never to /etc/nss-ldapd.conf the messages changed slightly to: Mar 28 03:41:02 deadhour nslcd[7158]: [8b4567] failed to bind to LDAP server ldaps://id.sea/: Can't contact LDAP server: No such file or directory [...] Could you include the output of nslcd -d here? Indeed, the xserver was working fine on the MACH64 card after the kernel changes even without the fallback to fbdev. feel free to unmerge it and reopen. However the same kernel fix didn't sort out the problems for MGA. And the notion of using the Frame Buffer device for MGA doesn't seem to me to be OK, because the lenny sparc64 kernel does not include the MGA fb module. Unless the Debian policy is that you make your own kernel if you need a specific module??? (That's fine. I am able to do that. Just need confirmation) if that's just a changed config option, you could ask the kernel maintainers to enable it in the next point release. Package: xserver-xorg-input-elographics Version: 1:1.2.1-1 Package installs OK. However in Lenny when the screen is touched Debian locks up. My xorg.conf is set up as the working Xorg used in Etch. By lock up I mean screen and keyboard freezes. Not even alt+ctrl function will work. Same error is reported by several people who have upgraded to Lenny on various forums. People are also reporting the same bug with latest build of Ubuntu. I'm using Debian Lenny 5.0. The xserver-xorg-input-elographics works fine on Etch 4+.

How can you tag this security while saying provided that the user doesn't care of the security. dpkg is not the tool that handles the trust on the package retrieved… And if the package is doing nasty things, it can also edit /var/log/dpkg.log. Remember that maintainer scripts run with root rights! You mention capabilities but that's theory since dpkg has no support for running maintainer scripts with different capilities than dpkg itself. So you're asking for a feature that depend on a non-existing feature… So this option doesn't increase the security very much. Implementing can still be useful but not really for any serious/trustable security audit. Bug#469191: Splitting control files over multiple binary packages
reassign 469191 docbook-xsl-doc-html tag 469191 +patch thanks Hi there! Yesterday I found by chance that doc-base already supports it, and dhelp doesn't have to do anything to make it work: it's the package maintainers who have to specify the same document id, as explained in the doc-base documentation: http://localhost/doc/doc-base/doc-base.html/ch-interface.html#s2.5.3 So, the solution is as simple as using the same document id (docbook-xsl-doc?) for all three doc-base files in docbook-xsl-doc-{html,pdf,text}. You should probably also depend on doc-base (= 0.8.7). -- Esteban Manchado Velázquez z...@demiurgo.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#523759: libgnomevfs2-common: Should default to sensible-browser instead of gnome-www-browser
Package: libgnomevfs2-common Version: 1:2.22.0-5 Severity: normal Tags: patch *** Please type your report below this line *** I am using lenny with KDE. Because adept is missing in lenny, I use gnome-app-install. Unfortunately, I could not open any link in the package descriptions. After some investigations it turned out that the reason was that libgnomevfs2-common defaults to gnome-www-browser, which is not available when using lenny with the KDE desktop. This bug can be fixed by simply replacing all instances of gnome-www-browser in /usr/share/gconf/defaults/10_libgnomevfs2-common with sensible-browser (and running update-gconf-defaults afterwards). Bug#523760: linux-modules-extra-2.6: Please include CDFS modules in l-m-e builds
Package: linux-modules-extra-2.6 Severity: wishlist Please include CDFS modules in linux-modules-extra-2.6 builds. Description: shows the tracks on a CD as normal files CDfs is a file system for Linux systems that `exports' all tracks and boot images on a CD as normal files. These files can then be mounted (e.g. for ISO and boot images), copied, played (WAVE audio and VideoCD tracks)... The primary goal for developing this file system was to `unlock' information in old ISO images. Source package is cdfs-src and builds ok with the latest 2.6.29-1-686 kernel This package is needed by my project TCOS [1], I'm uploading and asking all required dependencies before uploading. These are just three instances of the same problem: python-apt has deprecated some old functions in favour of new ones. But it seems that it did not just deprecate the old function, but it has also broken them. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the bug in my system: in a clean chroot, it does not happen. It probably only happens when having obsolete packages installed, or something like that. Anyway, I've ported apt-xapian-index to the new python-apt API, and I hope that it fixes the problem. I would like you to give it a try and tell me if it works: git clone git://git.debian.org/collab-maint/apt-xapian-index.git cd apt-xapian-index ./testrun As soon as I know that it fixes the problem, I'll proceed with an upload.
