Bug#523720: RM: chbg -- ROM; abandoned upstream; low popcon; RC and RG bugs; better alternatives available

2009-04-12 Thread Anibal Avelar
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Please remove package chbg from experimental; source and
binaries. It is dead upstream (no release since 2001), and since I
uploaded it to Debian better alternatives have appeared (such as
gsetroot, gbackground, idesk, ...).

Some Debian-local work has been done in the past to fix
bugs in it, I tried to port it to gtk2 (instead gtk1), but the porting
needs too work for a program with low popcon.
Also the package was removed from testing and unstable one year ago
(bug #477686).

Bug#497523: NEWS?

2009-04-12 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Joey Hess (jo...@debian.org):
If upstream is really going to disable tapping by default, and Debian is
not going to see fit to override them, then at the very least
this needs to be well documented in the NEWS file.

It's very disconcerting to have tapping just stop working after
an upgrade, as happened to me today (to 1.1.0-1).

Seconded.

I'd appreciate any hint that would help me reinstating tapping. These
things are among the things that have always been working magically
for me, so I have no clue *at all* about where to look to reinstate
tapping.

So, in case there is a NEWS file, I think it should explain how to
restore a working tappingthough I would very much prefer that
things are kept as is, to respect the principle of least surprise.

Bug#523721: goplay: menu entries should be consolidated

2009-04-12 Thread Avery Fay
Package: goplay
Version: 0.3-1
Severity: normal

Since each goplay app (admin, learn, etc.) has its own .desktop entry,
they all take a spot in gnome's menu system. This makes the Accessories menu
about twice as long. I think it would be better if they all shared the same
menu item or perhaps put them in a submenu.

If anybody knows how to enable tapping at runtime with hal or xinput, we
can add it as well.

Bug#523719: xserver-xorg-video-intel: 3D performance is terrible with Intel GMA X4500HD/G45/i965

3D performance does need seem hardware accelerated at all. glxgears
performs slowly. Running a 3D screensaver such as skyrockets is painful
to watch. Trying to run a 3D games such as alien arena results in 1-2

EXA, and UXA for acceleration. None provide any improvement.

I've also tried kernel mode setting, and that doesn't result in any
better performance, but it does make X peg the processor a 100%.

Did you have 2.6.29 when things work fine before upgrading to Intel 2.6.3 ?

Does 2D work fine?

What does /proc/mtrr contain?

I think that the dependencies are wrong for nvidia-glx.

snoopy:~# /etc/init.d/radvd start
Starting radvd: radvd.

It might be significant that there were two copies of the daemon
running, not sure. I only started one copy.

Also I have noticed that if I try to start radvd and one of the
interfaces has no link detected, radvd won't start at all on any
interface. This is bad because it means if one interface is down or
doesn't come up in time, then nothing IPv6 will work - including on
other interfaces that were working properly.

(note: on the interface in question, the Linux interface was always up
and running, and the address and routing information is hard coded for
this interface - it doesn't use dhcp or anything else - the only thing
that happened was the wireless access point attached to this port died
and was manually reset).

Description: multipurpose relay for bidirectional data transfer
Socat (for SOcket CAT) establishes two bidirectional byte streams
and transfers data between them. Data channels may be files, pipes,
devices (terminal or modem, etc.), or sockets (Unix, IPv4, IPv6, raw,
UDP, TCP, SSL). It provides forking, logging and tracing, different
modes for interprocess communication and many more options.
 .
It can be used, for example, as a TCP relay (one-shot or daemon),
as an external socksifier, as a shell interface to Unix sockets,
as an IPv6 relay, as a netcat and rinetd replacement, to redirect
TCP-oriented programs to a serial line, or to establish a relatively
secure environment (su and chroot) for running client or server shell
 scripts inside network connections.

 That's probably incorrect; xpdf-utils providing poppler-utils has
probably been added unilaterally for a particular use case but as you
 point out xpdf-utils isn't a wholesale replacement for poppler-utils.
New provides should be added to poppler-utils / xpdf-utils to express
what was meant there. Preventing other packages to depend on
the real poppler-utils package or to use a versionned dependency on it
 seems really wrong to me.

Bug#523726: linux-image-2.6.29-1-amd64: source should point to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.29-1-common

2009-04-12 Thread Brice Goglin
Package: linux-image-2.6.29-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.29-2
Severity: important

Hello,

The way kernel headers are installed seem to have changed recently.
It breaks external module building because there is no easy way
to find all non-compile generated headers.

They were in /usr/src/linux-headers-*-amd64 earlier, now they are
in /usr/src/linux-headers-*-common/
I think symlink /lib/modules/2.6.29-1-amd64/source (which disappeared
btw?) should point to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.29-1-common/

This is what other distros such as Suse seem to be doing,
and I don't see any other easy way to solve this.

thanks,
Brice

I suggest that this is made at least a suggests if not a recommends as
the lsb* options are pretty useful facts (e.g. to set up

but hey.

Bug#523731: SIGCHILD doesn't do anything

2009-04-12 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Package: gozerbot
Version: 0.7.1.1-1
Severity: minor

The example cron job for restarting gozerbot from
/usr/share/gozerbot/gozerbot.cron looks like this:

PID=`cat gozerbot.pid`

if test -r gozerbot.pid
then
  if `kill -CHLD $PID 1/dev/null 21`
  then
exit 0
  else
./runbot 1log 21
  fi
fi

However:

1. I have yet to see something happening with gozerbot, when I send it a
SIGCHILD. Does it have
   any effect at all?

2. under what condition should the kill command fail (as above in the code) and
why should
gozerbot be started in that case?

Bug#523730: gdebi-gtk doesn`t want to install packages

2009-04-12 Thread Павел Lubetsky
Package: gdebi-gtk.
Version: 0.3.11debian1+mmu1

When I try to install a .deb package using it, it simply freezes, and
I see a message in terminal, that gksu doesn`t support an
'--always-ask-pass' option. It can be easily fixed by commenting an
358th line in /usr/share/pyshared/GDebi/GDebi.py (
--always-ask-pass,).

Bug#523449: acpid fails to open input layer

2009-04-12 Thread Patrick Matthäi

Julien Cristau schrieb:

It definitely doesn't sound like an acpid bug... You'll need to provide
more information, dmesg would be a start.

Hmm I could track down the issue to one of the following packages:

hal
acpid
xserver-xorg{-input-*,-video-*}

What I have done now:

* Starting in rescue mode (console works)
* Setting up some services (hal etc)
* On setting up acpid with the init script it reports again that it
fails to open the input layer

* Starting kdm = nether keyboard or touchpad works
* Hard reset
* Again the first steps
* Now I manualy started acpid by just typing acpid after
/etc/init.d/acpid start

* Starting kdm
* Keyboard works, but touchpad still not

Now I am able to switch back to my vt and look for logs etc.. But hmpf,
there is nothing interesting stored..

Bug#523735: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools: please consider supporting the experimental kernel-package out of the box

2009-04-12 Thread Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.93.2
Severity: wishlist
File: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools

Since 12.001, kernel-package generated images no longer call any initramfs
generating command, instead relying on a postinst hook to do it when necessary.
Now, initramfs-tools has such a postinst hook script, but it seems to be
(deliberately) ignoring kernel-package kernels. Please change the hook script
to handle the new kernel-package kernels, so that I can remove my local hack.

Bug#521617: libnss-ldapd: tls_reqcert never doesn't work

2009-04-12 Thread Jamie Heilman
Arthur de Jong wrote:
 Sorry to not reply sooner.

On Sat, 2009-03-28 at 16:57 -0700, Jamie Heilman wrote:
With 0.6.7 if I have tls_reqcert never in /etc/ldap/ldap.conf then
nslcd can connect to my ldap servers (which unfortunately have
certificate problems and are outside of my administrative control) and
things work quite happily. The switch to 0.6.8 broke this capability
(almost surely the clean the environment and set LDAPNOINIT change
is responsible), even when I put tls_reqcert never in my
/etc/nss-ldapd.conf, which notably hasn't been well tested according
  to the warning messages.

Could you give me an summary of /etc/ldap/ldap.conf and
/etc/nss-ldapd.conf? That would make it easier to track this down.

/etc/ldap/ldap.conf is real simple:

ldap_version3
basedc=marchex,dc=com
tls_reqcert never

/etc/nss-ldapd.conf for 0.6.7 which works is:

uri ldaps://id.sea/
uri ldaps://id3.sea/
uri ldaps://id4.sea/
uri ldaps://id1.sea/
uri ldaps://id2.sea/
base dc=marchex,dc=com
base passwd ou=users,dc=marchex,dc=com
base shadow ou=users,dc=marchex,dc=com
base group ou=groups,dc=marchex,dc=com
uid nslcd
gid nslcd

/etc/nss-ldapd.conf for 0.6.8 which fails to work is the same as
0.6.7's with the addition of tls_reqcert never

Without tls_reqcert never in /etc/nss-ldapd.conf I just got this:

Mar 28 03:39:41 deadhour nslcd[11653]: [6c6125] failed to bind to LDAP
server ldaps://id.sea/: Can't contact LDAP server: Operation now in progress
 [...]
While I'm not surprised it couldn't establish the connection due to
not being able to verify the certs, the error message could stand to be
  more informative.

The problem is that I've no idea how to get better error messages out of
the OpenLDAP library. Can't contact LDAP server is what I get from
OpenLDAP and Operation now in progress is what I get from errno (which
may or may not be useful). Running nslcd in debug mode (nslcd -d) could
give more details in some situations.

Yeah, the errno appears to largely irrelevant from what I can see with
an strace against nslcd and what's actually going on during the first
and subsequent queries. Debug mode output (-d) isn't of any help
either. From strace its possible to see nslcd is attempting to
communicate with my ldap servers, sends some data back and forth, but
gives up eventually.

After adding tls_reqcert never to /etc/nss-ldapd.conf the messages
  changed slightly to:

Mar 28 03:41:02 deadhour nslcd[7158]: [8b4567] failed to bind to LDAP
server ldaps://id.sea/: Can't contact LDAP server: No such file or directory
 [...]

Could you include the output of nslcd -d here? Can you also give some
more details on what kind of certificate is used (self-signed, etc).

here's a lookup of two users, both of which fail (and shouldn't) with
0.6.8

Bug#523738: [kmail] kmail messes message list when deleting messages

2009-04-12 Thread Mario R. Carro
Package: kmail
Version: 4:4.2.2-1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Select a message from the inbox message list. Press DEL. The message is
moved to the trash folder and disappears from the inbox... but also do the
next or two next messages from the inbox. Those messages are not deleted
but only hidden. Sometimes refreshing the folder brings them back, other
times moving to other folder and coming back lets them appear again.

Selecting all the messages in the ingox folder sistematically show an error
message:

An attempt to delete the specified resource
imap://user%40dom...@server:143/INBOX/;UID=10410 failed.
...

It's trying to delete my inbox, isn't it? In the next refresh most of the
messages reappear (ie: they were not deleted).

I'm connected on a lan to a Dovecot IMAP server. The server is in a Debian
stable box.

Thanks...

 fallback to fbdev.

feel free to unmerge it and reopen.

However the same kernel fix didn't sort out the problems for MGA.

And the notion of using the Frame Buffer device for MGA doesn't seem to
me to be OK, because the lenny sparc64 kernel does not include the MGA
fb module. Unless the Debian policy is that you make your own kernel if
you need a specific module??? (That's fine. I am able to do that. Just
 need confirmation)

if that's just a changed config option, you could ask the kernel
maintainers to enable it in the next point release.

Cheers,

We lack the version comparison code in XSLT unfortunately. So it's not
feasible right now.

It's a simple string comparison and we rely on having the latest version
in the stylesheet.

It's coming soon, I screwed up the upload.
In the meantime, you may take it from
 http://people.debian.org/~bgoglin/libdrm-2.4.9/

Doesn't work either but I now switched from KDE to fluxbox and fluxbox at
least doesn't lock up completly on start. Still it's unusable because of
graphical errors. Starting glxgears (blindly typing) works.

Testing on another system with a 82945G chip everything is fine. Looks like
this is some 82865G specific bug. :(

It's a simple string comparison and we rely on having the latest version
 in the stylesheet.

When you say, a “string comparison”, you mean a comparison for equality,
I guess. Does XSLT offer at all the concept of strcmp()? I think that
alone would be preferable if it’s not a full-fledged version comparison
check: the Policy version numbers are simple enough that it should work,
and it can be deactivated if this statement stops being true at some
point in the future.

Only, I don’t know if strcmp() is available or not. :-)

See bug#523718 for more details on that.

Somehow, this change broke gnome-settings-daemon's default keybindings

This sounds like a gnome bug, since xev reports the correct keysym.

Bug#401582: Useful with VirtualBox

2009-04-12 Thread Diederik ter Rahe
This kind of patch would also be very useful when, like me, one
sometimes boots into Debian directly and sometimes in Virtualbox with
the partition in raw mode. At the moment I have trouble getting the 3D
feature in Virtualbox 2.2 to work and I suspect it has something to
do with conflicting nvidia drivers. Not sure which files are
conflicting yet, since, so far, temporarily moving them out of the way
and replacing them with mesa counterparts still results in a Xorg/Mesa
DRI error.

Might give this approach a manual try once I get the nvidia 180.44
drivers up and running...

Bug#523750: autoconf false error

2009-04-12 Thread spam...@treenetnz.com

Package: libtool
Version: 2.2.6a-2

Normal run of libtool, produces no other warnings until the end of the
master configure script.

At which point out pops:
  config.status: executing libtool commands
/bin/rm: cannot remove `libtoolT': No such file or directory

This is resolved by placing:
  $RM -f $cfgfile

at line 680 of /usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4

One thing to note, is that the package producing this error has been
bootstrapped to install libLtdl and related stuff under lib/libLtdl
instead of the defaults.
The actual error may be elsewhere with a failure of the macro to detect
and handle that case.

okay, here's a really minor nitpick:

if i commit (later to be amended) a snapshot version of debian/changelog,

i guess in an ideal world there would be some kind of nice way to

Bug#523745: please log sha1sum of installed debs

2009-04-12 Thread Holger Levsen
package: dpkg
severity: wishlist
tags: security
version: 1.14.25

Hi,

during a discussion about how to compromise the security of a Debian system I
noticed that /var/log/dpkg.log just logs the version number of the packages
installed, thus one can inject a on-the-fly-modified .deb with the same
version number (provided the user ignores an apt authentication warning),
which does harmful things and cleans up after itself with no trace on the
machine, even if /var/log/dpkg.log is stored securily, ie with capabilities.

Please add an option to log the sha1sum of installed binary packgaes
in /var/log/dpkg.log.

Thanks.

How can you tag this security while saying provided that the user doesn't
care of the security. dpkg is not the tool that handles the trust on the
package retrieved…

And if the package is doing nasty things, it can also edit
/var/log/dpkg.log. Remember that maintainer scripts run with root rights!
You mention capabilities but that's theory since dpkg has no support for
running maintainer scripts with different capilities than dpkg itself. So
you're asking for a feature that depend on a non-existing feature…

So this option doesn't increase the security very much. Implementing can
still be useful but not really for any serious/trustable security audit.

Cheers,

Bug#469191: Splitting control files over multiple binary packages

2009-04-12 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez

reassign 469191 docbook-xsl-doc-html
tag 469191 +patch
thanks

Hi there!

Yesterday I found by chance that doc-base already supports it, and
dhelp doesn't have to do anything to make it work: it's the package
maintainers who have to specify the same document id, as explained in the
doc-base documentation:

   http://localhost/doc/doc-base/doc-base.html/ch-interface.html#s2.5.3

So, the solution is as simple as using the same document id
(docbook-xsl-doc?) for all three doc-base files in
docbook-xsl-doc-{html,pdf,text}. You should probably also depend on
doc-base (= 0.8.7).

Thanks, but any idea why this needs to be so complicated? Shouldn't it
just require updating the symlinks?

Unfortunately diff.gz considers a change to a symlink to be an
unrepresentable change to source so it is nessacery to undo the change
to the symlink in the clean target.

the .h.in stuff is not technically required to build the package, it
just makes the clean target behave itself (clean should undo what a
build does per policy but nothing technical in debian enforces this
generally)

Bug#523756: texlive-latex-extra: essential .cfg files missing from latex nag package

2009-04-12 Thread otizonaizit
Package: texlive-latex-extra
Version: 2007.dfsg.16-1
Severity: normal

The latex package nag, used for detecting and warning about
obsolete LaTeX commands, misses the necessary configuration files.
The Debian installation just contains:
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/nag/nag.sty
whereas installing the package by hand yields the additional files:
nag-abort.cfg nag-experimental.cfg nag-l2tabu.cfg nag-orthodox.cfg

a minimal latex file to reproduce the problem:

\documentclass{report}
\usepackage[l2tabu]{nag}
\begin{document}
\end{document}

compiling it produces the warning:

Package nag Warning: Required ruleset l2tabu, and it wasn't there.

As no ruleset are installed by default in Debian, the nag package is
not usable.
A similar bug as been reported for the ubuntu package:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/texlive-extra/+bug/248408

thank you!

This sounds like a gnome bug, since xev reports the correct keysym.
gnome maintainers, can you have a look at bug #523718?

Since X did not report correct keysyms until recently, the default keys
for some shortcuts used to be overridden in GNOME. The problem should be
fixed by this upload:

*** Please type your report below this line ***
I am using lenny with KDE. Because adept is missing in lenny, I use
gnome-app-install.
Unfortunately, I could not open any link in the package descriptions.
After some investigations it turned out that the reason was that
libgnomevfs2-common defaults to gnome-www-browser, which is not
available when using lenny with the KDE desktop.
This bug can be fixed by simply replacing all instances of
gnome-www-browser in /usr/share/gconf/defaults/10_libgnomevfs2-common
with sensible-browser (and running update-gconf-defaults afterwards).
Please see the attached patch.

2009-04-12 Thread Mario Izquierdo (mariodebian)
Package: linux-modules-extra-2.6
Severity: wishlist

Please include CDFS modules in linux-modules-extra-2.6 builds.

Description: shows the tracks on a CD as normal files
CDfs is a file system for Linux systems that `exports' all tracks and
boot images on a CD as normal files. These files can then be mounted
(e.g. for ISO and boot images), copied, played (WAVE audio and VideoCD
tracks)... The primary goal for developing this file system was to
`unlock' information in old ISO images.

Source package is cdfs-src and builds ok with the latest 2.6.29-1-686 kernel

This package is needed by my project TCOS [1], I'm uploading and asking
all required dependencies before uploading. See more at [2]

first, we require that the maintainer (CC'ed) is showing his consent

second, cdfs-src has to be renamed to cdfs-source before it can be built
by linux-modules-extra-2.6.

Bug#523762: pcmanfm: can't mount ntfs volume if ntfs-3g is not installed

2009-04-12 Thread David Guedj
Package: pcmanfm
Version: 0.5-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

pcmanfm forces use of ntfs-3g for NTFS partion via the file
/usr/share/pcmanfm/mount.rules. Since pcmanfm does not (and
should not) depends on ntfs-3g, this leads to an error message
'org.freedesktop.hal.device.volume.unknownfailure' when trying
to mount a NTFS volume if ntfs-3g is not installed.

The attached patch fixed this problem.

retitle 523575 COWDANCER_DEBUG=1 is broken.

Hi,

You are running with COWDANCER_DEBUG=1, and apparently, that option
was broken. COWDANCER_DEBUG=1 breakage is fixed in my git tree, and
should be fixed in 0.55.

Not quite sure about other bugs filed about i386 build failures, if
you have anything to add, please add to the other bugs.

 Hi,

I use an i386 chroot on amd64, created as follows:

When I want to update this chroot, I get the following error:

hardlinked file, don't bother using cow-shell here.

It works when using the --no-cowdancer-update option.
However, I cannot build i386 packages which used to work perfectly until
 recently.

I attach a build log for nautilus-open-terminal as an example.

 Cheers,

check whether or not the problem had gone away or not in case it's of

Could you start checking with cowdancer-ilistdump tool to understand
what is broken. Could you try the cowdancer-ilistdump tool from
inside the chroot, and outside the chroot, and see if it can parse the .ilist
file ?

You can use hook script from
  /usr/share/doc/pbuilder/examples/C10shell
to avoid cleanup after build failure, and look at
/proc/mounts to see what work directory cowdancer is using.

That’s a fair observation, though I’m expecting lintian will surely warn
in that case. If the PTS starts making checks rather than mentioning
simple TODO actions...

OTOH, it is also true that if the PTS is going to be always using the
latest Policy version number available without need for manual updates
(see #522434), improving the comparison code becomes somewhat less
relevant, I’ll reckon.

Thanks for bringing that up.

Hello. These are just three instances of the same problem: python-apt
has deprecated some old functions in favour of new ones. But it seems
that it did not just deprecate the old function, but it has also broken
them.

Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the bug in my system: in a clean
chroot, it does not happen. It probably only happens when having
obsolete packages installed, or something like that.

Anyway, I've ported apt-xapian-index to the new python-apt API, and I
hope that it fixes the problem. I would like you to give it a try and
tell me if it works:

  git clone git://git.debian.org/collab-maint/apt-xapian-index.git
  cd apt-xapian-index
  ./testrun

As soon as I know that it fixes the problem, I'll proceed with an
upload.

Ciao,

Enrico

 Thanks...

It should be offered as a WLM account. Your settings disappeared because it

As usually, instead of reporting a new bug you just add something
completely unrelated to an existing bug.

You've been flooding the bts for years, and you still haven't learned
how to use it. I'm very disappointed of you.

I should ask you for more information about this new bug, but I won't.
Report it as a new bug, and attach all needed information. By now, you
should know how to do that, properly.

Hi Felix,

please build the package with `DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip,noopt,debug
dpkg-buildpackage',
to get a debug build. Don't add something like `-j2' or it doestn't work.
And then run grub-probe inside gdb, then you can get a backtrace.
If you need help with this I'm on Freenode in #grub with nick fezie.

Bug#523766: dpkg-buildpackage: Doestn't respect `DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt' when adding `-j2' to the build flags

2009-04-12 Thread Felix Zielcke
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.15.0
Severity: normal

Hi,

grub2 has the following in it's debian/rules:

ifneq (,$(findstring noopt,$(DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS)))
CFLAGS += -O0
else
CFLAGS += -O2
endif
export CFLAGS

When I compile with `DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip,noopt,debug dpkg-buildpackage',
it works correctly, i.e. compiler flags are `-g -O0'
But when I compile it with `DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip,noopt,debug
dpkg-buildpackage -j2',
then compiler flags are `-g -O2'.

Is your MODULES option in /etc/default/acpid set? The only meaningful
difference between starting acpid directly and running it through its init
