Bug#539578: [pbuilder] Non-functional if aptitude uninstallable (even in classic mode)
Package: pbuilder Version: 0.189 Severity: normal At the moment aptitude in sid is uninstallable. This means that pbuilder cannot update, and therefore cannot build. Furthermore, changing to the classic (or any other) dependency handler makes no difference: putting PBUILDERSATISFYDEPENDSCMD=/usr/lib/pbuilder/pbuilder-satisfydepends-[anything] in ~/.pbuilderrc does not change the result: The following packages have unmet dependencies: aptitude: Depends: libapt-pkg-libc6.9-6-4.7 Depends: libept0 (= 0.5.26+b1) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages So pbuilder simply doesn't work until aptitude becomes installable again. Since aptitude is important, not essential, and does on occasion become uninstallable, it'd be nice to have an easy way to work around this rare-but-annoying situation. Bug#539580: sed: Depends should really be Pre-Depends
Package: sed Version: 4.2.1-2 Severity: serious The Downgrade from Pre-Depends to Depends in this version is not correct, please revert it. Essential packages must work even when only unpacked (see Policy § 3.8), and the only way to ensure that libraries required by sed are present after unpacking it is to Pre-Depend on them. On Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 10:01:05AM +0200, Joachim Breitner wrote: I believe the reason Darcs' zlib dependency was bumped to 0.5.1 is because 0.5.0 has known problems with CRC (checksums) -- either generating bad ones, or failing to detect/repair bad ones. I can dig up the exact details if you want. Don’t worry, I believe that darcs’ dependency is there for a good reason. For the record, here's what Ganesh had to say about why Darcs' zlib dependency was bumped: zlib 0.5.0.0 is not buggy. Darcs was previously buggy in that it sometimes wrote out .gz files with bad checksums and then happily read them back in without checking, so the bug wasn't spotted for a long time, leaving a significant number of files in repos that had this corrupt checksum (but were otherwise fine). zlib perfectly legitimiately refused to read them in, making it unsuitable for use as the default zlib binding for darcs. zlib 0.5.2.0 adds an interface to allow clients to be informed of the broken checksums but still continue, which darcs makes use of to warn the user to run the new darcs gzcrcs' command to repair them. In other words, if Darcs 2.3 was built against zlib 0.5.0, it would not work with some repositories made by older Darcses. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#520633: xscreensaver: screen does not lock if switched to virtual terminal
The recent behavior change in xscreensaver was in the case where it could not grab the mouse or keyboard or both. The old behavior was that it would lock anyway, possibly resulting in a screen that could not be unlocked. The new behavior is that if it can't get both grabs, it does not lock the screen. So, the behavior you're seeing suggests that when you VT-switch away from X, the X keyboard and/or mouse become ungrabbable. Bug#538852: Bug#538849: ITP: stardict-english-simpchinese -- Stardict package for English to and from Simplified Chinese dictionaries
2009-08-02 (일), 11:16 +0800, LIU Qi: 1. stardict1.3 dictionary: it is based on the dictinary in the stardict 1.3 written by Ma Suan. This software is under GPL-2. If it does not conform to the DFSG, it should not exist in Debian either. However it has been in the Debian for many years. 2. xdict dictionary: xdict is also under GPL. And it has been in Debian. Please refer to the package: dict-xdict. IIUC stardict and xdict *programs* are under GPL but I can't find how their dictionaries have been built. They just have been labled as GPLed without clue. The old dict-xdict ITP has no clear explanation about this issue except the upstream README. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=342816#15 A dictionary with reasonable quality is very difficult to build by hackers for a short time. If such a big database appears suddenly by one or a few hackers without a clear explanation, it is almost surely converted from other dictionaries. 3. cedict: it is under the CEDICT license. I googled CEDICT and found the project used CC-BY-SA 3.0. Its dictionary building history looks quite clear to me. -- Changwoo Ryu cw...@debian.org signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#538959: insserv/sysv-rc using dependency based boot sequencing break migration to file-rc
More reasons: file-rc is much easier to understand and to get a QUICK overview of the system boot state and also is more familiar to sysadmins coming from the BSD world. Plus, it’s got a lot less overhead. Please keep supporting file-rc. //mirabilos -- I believe no one can invent an algorithm. One just happens to hit upon it when God enlightens him. Bug#528134: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#528134: Bug#528134: samba-common: smbpasswd -a user does not creat /etc/samba/smbpasswd file
Quoting Susan (auster...@gmail.com): I was able to produce the following error using smbpasswd when the directory /etc/samba did not exist: Well, /etc/samba is provided by samba-common, so the only way for this to happen is.removing it manually (and voluntarily), which is likely to break the package. If the problem is there, then I don't think this is a bug. On the other hand, it would be interesting to know how you ended up with a system without /etc/samba while the samba-common package was installed. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#539176: Please special-case the kernel so that all bug reports are filed against the source package
Hi Moritz On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 17:45, Moritz Muehlenhoffj...@debian.org wrote: Package: reportbug Version: 4.5 Severity: wishlist The linux-2.6 source package is a bit special in comparison to other packages because the names of the binary packages change frequently (every 2-3 months with the release of a new kernel version). Currently, most bugs are reassigned manually to the linux-2.6 source package. It would be nice if all bugs filed against the kernel in reportbug were always directed towards the linux-2.6 source package. Of course we'd be more than happy to help you with this, but I got some thoughts: - wouldn't you lost the information about what kernel the bug is about? It's true that in the Sys info below we got: Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) but that's the running kernel. What if a user want to report a bug against another version of the kernel (for example that can't boot) than the one running? How do you manage this? - would you please be so kind to provide us the stricter regular expression to match a binary kernel package? :) this way we can match the current bin package name against the regex and do the voodoo magic to force the report against linux-2.6 (yeah, this also means that if you change the binary name structure, you should communicate us back the new regexp). I could write myself, but I think that you would end up with a much better one ;) Cheers, -- Sandro Tosi (aka morph, morpheus, matrixhasu) My website: http://matrixhasu.altervista.org/ Me at Debian: http://wiki.debian.org/SandroTosi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#539603: mutt does not more find NEW messages if imap_idle is used and mutt restarted
Package: mutt Version: 1.5.18-6 Severity: important Hello Maintainer, according to my previosly bugreports #537874 and #537877 it seems there is another error too. If I start mutt2 with an empty header_cache directory, the first time mutt ask the server for the headers of all messages in the folders defined by mailboxes. Now I can walk through the folders with new messages and all is working fine. But now, if I close mutt before I have consulted all mailfolders with new messages, mutt refuse the next time, to show me the new messages, EVEN if I see per SSH that the messages are in the /new/ subdirectory of my courier-imap folders. So, mutt has the previously time writen the infos into the header_cache and if I restart mutt, it does not check the status anymore. NOW, if a new messages arrive in courier-imap, imap_idle is triggered and mutt bring me to the mailbox where I even see the old new messages but now moved to /cur/. This but is grave enough to give it the severity important, because now I have over 168.000 messages unread in more then 6.000 folders... Bug#539606: rpm: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review
Package: rpm Version: N/A Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Debian maintainer, On Sunday, August 02, 2009, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for rpm. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report. Please review the suggested changes, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. However, please try to avoid uploading rpm with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Wednesday, August 05, 2009, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until about Wednesday, August 26, 2009. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact that I simultaneously work on many packages. Around Thursday, August 27, 2009, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash --- rpm.old/debian/rpm.templates2009-07-18 07:52:30.105590278 +0200 +++ rpm/debian/rpm.templates2009-08-02 12:09:07.152572880 +0200 @@ -1,6 +1,17 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# debian-l10n-engl...@lists.debian.org for advice. +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: rpm/upgrade-failed Type: note -_Description: rpm database cleaned up - Database which rpm keeps about installed packages is not usable with new - version. Bug#539609: RFA: file-rc -- Alternative boot mechanism using a single configuration file
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I request an adopter for the file-rc package. The package description is: This package provides an alternative mechanism to boot the system, to shut it down and to change runlevels. The /etc/rc?.d/* links will be converted into one single configuration file /etc/runlevel.conf instead, which is easier to administrate than symlinks, and is also more flexible. . The package will automatically convert your existing symlinks into the file method on installation, and convert the file back into symlinks on removal. Both mechanisms are compatible through /etc/init.d/rc, /etc/init.d/rcS, /usr/sbin/update-rc.d, and /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d scripts. At the moment this package requires some action because it is required to implement insserv functionality here, see Bug#539591. At the moment I personally won't find the time to dig deep enough into insserv to code this. So I request for an adopter of this package. Bug#503373: foo2zjs: Should/Better select printer and run ``getweb'' to download firmwire during package installation

I also find that if it was turned off and turned on, I should use another system to print a document again, then connect to my system, to get it work on my system. After a long time searching on web I find that I should run ``getweb 1020''. I think it's better prompt it when doing postinst. Sorry for the long delay on this. I think it's a bad idea to put this into postinst as not all printers need additional files download from the web. Users are expected to read the file README.Debian in /usr/share/doc/package name when something like this happens. I tried to make the text in this file more clear on this. If you still have issues with this please replay. This will be in the next upload of foo2zjs package. Bug#536903: Intend to NMU
Hi, Thanks for your contribution to keeping Debian RC-bug-free; from a quick skim-read your patch looks like an improvement. However, I'm not sure whether Debian really benefits enough from having bogosort to resolve this RC bug by fixing it rather than removing it: * without the -n option it's an implementation of a pathologically bad sorting algorithm (admittedly, this is deliberate) * GNU coreutils (which is Essential: yes) now has shuf(1), which shuffles lines like bogosort -n does * the build system is set up for autoconf 2.13 (!) * upstream's README says: I wrote bogosort to learn a bit about automake and autoconf and because alsaplayer doesn't let me play files randomly. Debian has better (and less outdated) examples of autotools usage (notably, GNU hello is intended as an example), and shuf(1) covers the latter * it's had 5 uploads in 7.5 years, one of which was an NMU * popcon reports 92 installations and 10 votes So, perhaps it would be better to resolve this RC bug by removing bogosort from the distribution? On the other hand, I'd be willing to consider sponsoring your NMU if you can convince me that having bogosort is of benefit to Debian... Regards, Simon signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#539617: dpkg: Add option to suppress progress display while reading database
Package: dpkg Version: 1.15.3.1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch When the output of package installations are logged to a file, the progress counter updates while reading the database are distracting. This is especially the case in Debian Installer where multiple package installations are started and all are logged to the syslog. For an example of the result, see the syslog attached in [1]. Another example is buildd logs, for example [2]. The attached patch adds an option --no-db-progress that allows to suppress the progress updates in such situations. Bug#539581: jackd always tries to run realtime
On Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 01:37:46AM -0500, TheGZeus wrote: Hi! Severity: important I usually don't mess with severity levels, but as the fix for this bug is really easy, I've lowered it to minor. I cannot get jackd to run, as it continues to try running in realtime mode, Yes, that's the new default. Upstream has changed to realtime as the default. It's the normal way of running jackd, so you'd now need to tell jackd NOT to use realtime prios. Unfortunately, this change isn't documented, yet. I'll add a NEWS file to the package and probably send a manpage fix, too. Within some months, everybody will know that realtime is the default. ;) JFTR, here's the relevant code: jack/jackd/jackd.c: static int realtime = 1; [..] switch (opt) { case 'L': realtime = 0; break; [..] case 'R': /* this is now the default */ realtime = 1; break; Is it asking me to completely log out of every shell, X, etc before I can use it? You can run it without realtime prios: This is done by passing -L to jackd, i.e. something like this: $ jackd -L -d alsa ... Running it with realtime prios would really mean to re-logon to X, since the limits are set by PAM upon login. Note that this is only necessary if you answer YES to the debconf question (dpkg-reconfigure -phigh jackd) HTH PS: If you still have trouble getting jackd running, feel free to reply to this bug. -- mail: a...@thur.de http://adi.thur.de PGP/GPG: key via keyserver -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#531978: [Pkg-phototools-devel] Bug#531978: libgphoto2: Please modernize udev rules
tag 531978 pending thanks Martin Pitt martin.p...@ubuntu.com (05/06/2009): I recently did some ramblings about modernizing libgphoto2's udev rules to work in a Linux world without hal [1]. I added a new udev rule mode 136 and while I was at it, replaced the slow check-ptp-camera shell script with a more efficient udev db query. The patch got committed upstream now. Yep, got it in 2.4.6.5, which I'm currently working on. This debdiff applies it to the Debian package and also moves udev rule creation from postinst to debian/rules. This is possible now, since from udev 136 on, rules are shipped in /lib/udev/rules.d/, thus avoid becoming conffiles. That's quite welcome. I've tweaked it to use override_dh_installudev given I've just moved to using dh, and hopefully that shouldn't break too much on non-Linux architectures. I guess we want to keep an eye on the check-mtp-device thingy in the -port0 package, which is being handled a bit similarly to the check-ptp-device one; although no rules are generated from there. Upload should happen in experimental in a few (hours|days). Thanks for that really appreciated patch. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#539482: texlive-base-bin: bibtex should use the alternatives system
* Vincent Danjean vdanjean...@free.fr, 2009-08-02, 01:11: There are currently at least 2 working bibtex implementations in Debian, i.e. nbibtex and TeX Live's one, and there's going to be more (see bugs #412085, #535116). Therefore, I believe it would be a good idea for TeX Live's bibtex to start using the Debian alternatives system, so that other implementations could be made available under the /usr/bin/bibtex and /usr/share/man/man1/bibtex.1.gz names. Does all the bibtex implementations have the same interface (ie the same command-line options) ? It is required if want to be able to use alternatives. All the implementations accept the most basic syntax, i.e.: bibtex AUXFILE[.aux] nbibtex supports the -min-crossref=N, -help and -version, but not -terse. Unfortunately, other implementations support none of these options. However, if you believe that it is essential to have all of them implemented (I don't think it's necessary), I am willing to contribute patches for pybtex and (possibly) pybliographer. -- Jakub Wilk -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi, * Alexander Zangerl a...@snafu.priv.at [2009-07-16 23:31-0400]: On Thu, 16 Jul 2009 09:38:21 -0400, Micah Anderson writes: The newer duplicity stable release, 0.5.18 which was released May 20, contains a significant number of fixes from the one currently in the archive. Could you update the package? If you cannot do it soon, I am happy to NMU it. i'll put in some effort over the weekend. Any progress with this? The current development release is 0.6.02, released July 8, 2009, it contains some very useful features, such as Checkpoint/Restart capabilities, which would fix at least one bug in the BTS. Uploading this version to Experimental would be a useful exercise IMHO. i'm not happy with the idea of maintaining three versions (lenny's ancient one, testing/unstable and an experimental one), especially as in the recent past even the major version switches haven't caused much breakage. Makes sense. i will therefore package 0.6, test it and upload it for unstable+testing, likely followed by an etch-backport build as well. I like that idea, since 0.6 is getting all the interesting things now. micah signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#539623: Phonon does not work with Qt !!
Package: phonon Version: 4:4.5.2-1 Severity: important Hello, Phonon, as is, does not work with Qt4. I keep getting errors in the spirit of: WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded But, for sure, as can be seen below, the xine backend is installed all right. Digging out, I've found that just adding a symlink from /usr/lib/kde4/plugins/phonon_backend to /usr/lib/qt4/plugins is enough. Would you please kindly fix this problem ? BTW, it seems to me that I reported this problem some time ago, and that it was fixed, but maybe I've dreamt that one. Many thanks ! Bug#535833: marked as done (general: Slow internet on iceweasel, epiphany and so on...)
On Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 08:39:46AM +0200, Tollef Fog Heen wrote: ]] Roger Leigh | Having working local networking is important. We wouldn't consider | broken IPv4 loopback acceptable, and broken IPv6 loopback is just as | bad. Sure, having it working is important. Is it more important than keeping those (often new) users for whom Debian appears useless because of its perceived poor network performance? It would be nice if both worked. But, in the absence of good heuristics for detecting broken networking, this is probably something that should not be done automatically. Anyway, IIRC this is now solved in glibc by sending out the queries in parallel and returning the first answer you get. OK. What happens to the other answer(s) though? Does this mean that getaddrinfo(3) skips slow replies completely? This is surely equally broken if so? For anyone with broken networking, the test program here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=5;filename=addrtest.c;att=1;bug=441857 will test local name resolving in glibc; just replace ip6-localhost with a hostname to check. | The idea behind the patch isn't bad, but the implementation proposed | here is too naïve. The assumption that you only want working IPv6 | name resolution when you have a globally-scoped IPv6 address is too | simplistic. FWIW, it roughly matches what Mac OS X and Windows do. And it's not considered broken on these platforms too? I guess the proportion of IPv6 users is vastly lower on these platforms due to the general networking clue level of the users, and that Windows has had fully functional IPv6 networking for a much shorter time than GNU/Linux. | Not only do you have the local loopback, you also have link-local | addresses which you can legitimately use. Does zeroconf support | these? Fundamentally breaking IPv6 for these use cases to work around | broken routing hardware is IMO a step too far. Does anybody use IPv6-only link-local? Probably not conciously; it's intended to be used automatically. A quick google shows Avahi does use these (with some caveats). IPv6 has the concept of Scope, and these scopes include Node/Host, Link, Site, Organisation, and Global. To assume that IPv6 networking is only active when you have one or more Global addresses is an incorrect assumption. With the previous glibc patch, my networking broke as the Global link went up and down. Regards, Roger -- .''`. I intend to upload this NMU once I've tested it properly, unless the maintainer or another team member gets there first (in which case feel free to incorporate my changes into a maintainer upload).
