Bug#539578: [pbuilder] Non-functional if aptitude uninstallable (even in classic mode)

2009-08-02 Thread Jason Heeris
Package: pbuilder
Version: 0.189
Severity: normal

At the moment aptitude in sid is uninstallable. This means that pbuilder
cannot update, and therefore cannot build. Furthermore, changing to the
classic (or any other) dependency handler makes no difference: putting

PBUILDERSATISFYDEPENDSCMD=/usr/lib/pbuilder/pbuilder-satisfydepends-[anything]

in ~/.pbuilderrc does not change the result:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  aptitude: Depends: libapt-pkg-libc6.9-6-4.7
Depends: libept0 (= 0.5.26+b1) but it is not going to be
installed
E: Broken packages

So pbuilder simply doesn't work until aptitude becomes installable
again. Since aptitude is important, not essential, and does on occasion
become uninstallable, it'd be nice to have an easy way to work around
this rare-but-annoying situation.

This is related to, but not the same as bug #448334.

Cheers,
Jason Heeris

Bug#539579: alsa-utils: Master channel muted after each boot

2009-08-02 Thread Julien Valroff
Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1.0.20-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

The master channel is muted after each boot and its level is set to 0.

I have edited the init script to remove all calls to mute_and_zero_levels()
and things work ok now.
I am not sure this is the best thing to do.

I have an HDA intel card.

Not sure what other information would be useful, please do not hesitate to
ask for futher details.

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#539580: sed: Depends should really be Pre-Depends

2009-08-02 Thread Sven Joachim
Package: sed
Version: 4.2.1-2
Severity: serious

The Downgrade from Pre-Depends to Depends in this version is not
correct, please revert it. Essential packages must work even when only
unpacked (see Policy § 3.8), and the only way to ensure that libraries
required by sed are present after unpacking it is to Pre-Depend on them.

This is aggravated by the fact that the libc6 preinst uses sed, which
has the potential to leave the system in an un-upgradable state if sed
is unpacked before libc6.

I can dig up the exact details if you want.

Don’t worry, I believe that darcs’ dependency is there for a good
 reason.

For the record, here's what Ganesh had to say about why Darcs' zlib
dependency was bumped:

zlib 0.5.0.0 is not buggy. Darcs was previously buggy in that it
sometimes wrote out .gz files with bad checksums and then happily
read them back in without checking, so the bug wasn't spotted for a
long time, leaving a significant number of files in repos that had
this corrupt checksum (but were otherwise fine). zlib perfectly
legitimiately refused to read them in, making it unsuitable for use
as the default zlib binding for darcs. zlib 0.5.2.0 adds an
interface to allow clients to be informed of the broken checksums
but still continue, which darcs makes use of to warn the user to run
the new darcs gzcrcs' command to repair them.

In other words, if Darcs 2.3 was built against zlib 0.5.0, it would
not work with some repositories made by older Darcses.

Same thing for me. Since this was the approved way to switch /bin/sh as
documented by the bash package, the dash package needs to account for it
someway instead of failing on upgrades.

Maybe you can spot the difference that's causing your automountd to
give up - but I'd suggest switching to v5 anyway because upstream
development on v4 has ceased, and I'd like to drop v4 before Squeeze
 is released.

Can I propose a simple workaround until v5 is out. Once upon a time the
automount init.d script used to create the dirs. What exactly is the
problem in doing this once again?

It is a one-liner after all.

Bug#520633: xscreensaver: screen does not lock if switched to virtual terminal

2009-08-02 Thread Jamie Zawinski
The recent behavior change in xscreensaver was in the case where it
could not grab the mouse or keyboard or both.

The old behavior was that it would lock anyway, possibly resulting in
a screen that could not be unlocked.

The new behavior is that if it can't get both grabs, it does not lock
the screen.

So, the behavior you're seeing suggests that when you VT-switch away
from X, the X keyboard and/or mouse become ungrabbable. That's weird.

| Having working local networking is important. We wouldn't consider

Sure, having it working is important. Is it more important than keeping
those (often new) users for whom Debian appears useless because of its
perceived poor network performance?

Anyway, IIRC this is now solved in glibc by sending out the queries in

FWIW, it roughly matches what Mac OS X and Windows do.

| Not only do you have the local loopback, you also have link-local

Bug#539581: jackd always tries to run realtime

2009-08-02 Thread TheGZeus
Package: jackd
Version: 0.116.2+svn3592-2
Severity: important

I cannot get jackd to run, as it continues to try running in realtime mode,
despite a dpkg-reconfigure jackd, and selecting 'no' to the question
(mistakenly selected 'yes' previously)
now it simply refuses to start with the following error:

JACK is running in realtime mode, but you are not allowed to use realtime
scheduling.

After applying these changes, please re-login in order for them to take effect.

You don't appear to have a sane system configuration. It is very likely that you
encounter xruns. Please apply all the above mentioned changes and start jack
again!

Is it asking me to completely log out of every shell, X, etc before I can use
it?
Is this a debian bug, or some new, even more frustrating Jack thing?
I can't figure out if I'm having problems with Rosegarden until I get Jack
running (problem using plugins, not sure if it wants Jack running, or some
other problem, as I always had it running in the past).

Hi Aurelien,

Thanks for the quick upload of 0.84!

One minor comment: I see you restricted usb-devices to root only. IMO
there's no need for that as everything it uses in sysfs is world readable.
And as 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices' is open to regular users too I feel
that not restricting it is more consistent.

Bug#539584: confused by global .gitconfig format.pretty=oneline

2009-08-02 Thread Trent W. Buck
Package: git-buildpackage
Version: 0.4.54
Severity: normal

In my .gitconfig I had

[format]
   pretty = oneline

I was trying to do debuild -uc -us -tc in a clean clone of
scim-anthy and getting errors of the form

../libtool: line 835: X--tag=CXX: command not found
[...]

It seemed like X was being put in front of every arg to libtool.
Commenting out that format.pretty=oneline above, fixed the problem.

The commands I used were

git clone git://git.debian.org/collab-maint/scim-anthy.git
git checkout origin/pristine-tar -b pristine-tar
git checkout origin/upstream -b upstream
git checkout master
git-buildpackage

This problem also seemed to affect debuild -uc -us -tc -i -I when I
ran that instead of git-buildpackage, so maybe this bug belongs
against scim-anthy itself? But apt-get source -t unstable -b
scim-anthy worked, so it's something that ONLY affects the git
version...

enough information for you to be able to reproduce the problem.

Bug#539585: postgresql-8.3: wrong encoding when migrating cluster

2009-08-02 Thread Salvatore Tomaselli
Package: postgresql-8.3
Version: 8.3.7-0lenny1
Severity: normal

My locale is UTF8.
Migrating from 8.1 to 8.3 the new cluster was LATIN9.
This screwed up postfix because it works with latin1 and it is not possible to
convert.
So to make it work i had to dump the entire cluster, delete it, recreate with
the utf8 encoding as it was supposed to be from the beginning and then load it
again.
So i guess the new clusters should be automatically created with the system
encoding by default which is not, since i had to manually specify it (and the
manpage said it was not a good idea to specify the encoding and don't let the
locale do its job).

Bug#538852: Bug#538849: ITP: stardict-english-simpchinese -- Stardict package for English to and from Simplified Chinese dictionaries

2009-08-02 Thread Changwoo Ryu
2009-08-02 (일), 11:16 +0800, LIU Qi:

 1. stardict1.3 dictionary: it is based on the dictinary in the stardict
1.3 written by Ma Suan. This software is under GPL-2. If it does not
conform to the DFSG, it should not exist in Debian either. However it
has been in the Debian for many years.

 2. xdict dictionary: xdict is also under GPL. And it has been in Debian.
Please refer to the package: dict-xdict.

IIUC stardict and xdict *programs* are under GPL but I can't find how
their dictionaries have been built. They just have been labled as
GPLed without clue. The old dict-xdict ITP has no clear explanation
about this issue except the upstream README.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=342816#15

A dictionary with reasonable quality is very difficult to build by
hackers for a short time. If such a big database appears suddenly by one
or a few hackers without a clear explanation, it is almost surely
converted from other dictionaries.

 3. cedict: it is under the CEDICT license.

I googled CEDICT and found the project used CC-BY-SA 3.0. Its dictionary
building history looks quite clear to me.

Bug#510772: debhelper: dh binary-arch should call dh_strip with --dbg-package when a -dbg package is present in control

Fair enough, it's probably not worth adding more complexity in dh_strip
if we can get this soonish.

Bug#538959: insserv/sysv-rc using dependency based boot sequencing break migration to file-rc

2009-08-02 Thread Thorsten Glaser
More reasons:

file-rc is much easier to understand and to get a QUICK overview
of the system boot state and also is more familiar to sysadmins
coming from the BSD world.

Plus, it’s got a lot less overhead.

Please keep supporting file-rc.

Bug#539591: file-rc: Need to use dependency based boot sequencing from now on

2009-08-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Package: file-rc
Version: 0.8.11
Severity: important
User: initscripts-ng-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: runtime-problem

Hi. For Debian Squeeze, update-rc.d will change behaviour to order
init.d scripts using dependencies. This means file-rc need to change
to work like this too. The change has already been done in sysv-rc.

Kel and me are working on fixing the migration problem that was
introduced when sysv-rc made dependency based boot sequencing
mandatory, to allow file-rc to be installed again. For file-rc to
work properly, it also need to change to order scripts the same way
sysv-rc do.

Setting severity to important for now. Perhaps critical is a better
severity for this issue?

Happy hacking,

Bug#539592: cdcover: Used Tex Command isolatin1 is deprecated and produces an error

2009-08-02 Thread Stefan Hirschmann
Package: cdcover
Version: 0.9.1-6.3
Severity: normal

When using cdcover it generates a tex file. One of the used options is:
\usepackage{ifthen,isolatin1,graphicx,color}
but the file isolatin1.sty is not part of debian anymore so you get a
compile error, when using pdflatex.

Changing the mentioned line to:
\usepackage{ifthen,graphicx,color}
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

will fix the problem. But this should be done by cdcover itself and not
each time by hand.

I am using stable. This bug report is true at least for the version in
stable.

Bug#528134: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#528134: Bug#528134: samba-common: smbpasswd -a user does not creat /etc/samba/smbpasswd file

2009-08-02 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Susan (auster...@gmail.com):
I was able to produce the following error using smbpasswd when the directory
 /etc/samba did not exist:

Well, /etc/samba is provided by samba-common, so the only way for this
to happen is.removing it manually (and voluntarily), which is
likely to break the package.

If the problem is there, then I don't think this is a bug. On the
other hand, it would be interesting to know how you ended up with a
system without /etc/samba while the samba-common package was
installed.

Bug#539176: Please special-case the kernel so that all bug reports are filed against the source package

2009-08-02 Thread Sandro Tosi
Hi Moritz

On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 17:45, Moritz Muehlenhoffj...@debian.org wrote:
 Package: reportbug
 Version: 4.5
 Severity: wishlist

The linux-2.6 source package is a bit special in comparison to other packages
because the names of the binary packages change frequently (every 2-3 months
 with
the release of a new kernel version). Currently, most bugs are reassigned
manually to the linux-2.6 source package. It would be nice if all bugs filed
against the kernel in reportbug were always directed towards the linux-2.6
 source package.

Of course we'd be more than happy to help you with this, but I got
some thoughts:

- wouldn't you lost the information about what kernel the bug is
about? It's true that in the Sys info below we got:

Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core)

but that's the running kernel. What if a user want to report a bug
against another version of the kernel (for example that can't boot)
than the one running? How do you manage this?

- would you please be so kind to provide us the stricter regular
expression to match a binary kernel package? :) this way we can match
the current bin package name against the regex and do the voodoo magic
to force the report against linux-2.6 (yeah, this also means that if
you change the binary name structure, you should communicate us back
the new regexp). I could write myself, but I think that you would end
up with a much better one ;)

Cheers,

Bug#539602: gimp: incorrect import of gradients from Adobe Illustrator PDFs

2009-08-02 Thread Török Edwin
Package: gimp
Version: 2.6.6-1+b1
Severity: normal

Inkscape and gimp incorrectly import the gradient in the file below (also filed
a similar bug for inkscape).

When importing the 'Adobe Illustrator version' (Dragon.ai) file from
llvm.org/Logo.html
the gradient is wrong, it goes all the way to black as seen here:
http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/pipermail/llvmdev/attachments/20090731/07c52d92/attachment.png

Here is how it should look like:
http://llvm.org/img/DragonMedium.png

If I open the Dragon.ai file in xpdf or okular (its a PDF after all), then the
gradient is displayed properly.

It is only when importing to inkscape or gimp this bug occurs.

Bug#539582: usbutils: usb-devices does not need to be restricted to root

 Hi Aurelien,

Thanks for the quick upload of 0.84!

One minor comment: I see you restricted usb-devices to root only. IMO

I don't, it's the upstream decision.

there's no need for that as everything it uses in sysfs is world readable.
And as 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices' is open to regular users too I feel
that not restricting it is more consistent.

Ok, I'll send a patch to upstream and do another upload once it has been
accepted.

Bug#539603: mutt does not more find NEW messages if imap_idle is used and mutt restarted

2009-08-02 Thread Michelle Konzack
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.18-6
Severity: important

Hello Maintainer,

according to my previosly bugreports #537874 and #537877 it seems there
is another error too.

If I start mutt2 with an empty header_cache directory, the first time
mutt ask the server for the headers of all messages in the folders
defined by mailboxes.

Now I can walk through the folders with new messages and all is working
fine.

But now, if I close mutt before I have consulted all mailfolders with
new messages, mutt refuse the next time, to show me the new messages,
EVEN if I see per SSH that the messages are in the /new/ subdirectory of
my courier-imap folders.

So, mutt has the previously time writen the infos into the
header_cache and if I restart mutt, it does not check the status
anymore. NOW, if a new messages arrive in courier-imap, imap_idle is
triggered and mutt bring me to the mailbox where I even see the old
new messages but now moved to /cur/.

This but is grave enough to give it the severity important, because now
I have over 168.000 messages unread in more then 6.000 folders... (I run
8 instances of mutt)

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day/Evening

i'm not sure if i understand you correctly. are you saying, that
installing dosfstools did make your usb device disappear? if so, this
has hardly anything to do with dosfstools.

Bug#539604: qa.debian.org: Wrong dates on wnpp bugs

2009-08-02 Thread Mauro Lizaur
Package: qa.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Hello,
I've just noticed that http://qa.debian.org/wnpp.php?login=$PERSON
displays a wrong amount of days for owned bugs.
I mean, my page [0] shows this line:

# #535627: ITP: python-audiolab -- A python module to make noise from numpy
arrays (30 day(s) old)
[1]

While I just retitled that bug from RFP to ITP on last
Thursday, instead of 30 days this should read 3 days
(Thursday being July 30th and today being August 2nd).
Yes, the origin of the bug is from 30 days ago, but I started to work
on it a few days ago, this is why I consider that this could be a /bug/.

I set the severity to whishlist because perhaps there's a
reason for this behaviour that I'm not aware of.
Feel free to modify the severity or to close this report.

Bug#539606: rpm: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review

2009-08-02 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: rpm
Version: N/A
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Debian maintainer,

On Sunday, August 02, 2009, I notified you of the beginning of a review process
concerning debconf templates for rpm.

The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates,
and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report.

Please review the suggested changes, and if you have any
objections, let me know in the next 3 days.

However, please try to avoid uploading rpm with these changes
right now.

The second phase of this process will begin on Wednesday, August 05, 2009, when
I will
coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates.

The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will
receive an updated PO file for their language.

Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to
the debian-i18n mailing list.

Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as
individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug
reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with.

The call for translation updates and new translations will run until
about Wednesday, August 26, 2009. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed
or changed
debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of
course, other changes are safe.

Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my
own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact
that I simultaneously work on many packages.

Around Thursday, August 27, 2009, I will contact you again and will send a
final patch
summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates,
updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations).

Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation.

Bug#539497: dkimsign and dkimverify scripts better provided by libmail-dkim-perl

What is the 3rd option you are talking about?

I don't know. Some other name. dkimsign-perl/dkimverify-perl or something.
It's a bit unfortunate that policy doesn't allow extensions on executables in
the default $PATH; that would have allowed us to have left the names as
dkimsign.pl and dkimsign.py etc.

Obviously, 'mkdir -p /root/stats' solves this problem. However, this
requirement doesn't look to be documented in man 8
 sbuild-createchroot. It's also confusing because the README.Debian
seems to suggest that the stats directories are in /var/lib/sbuild.

This was a problem in the configuration code, where it would require that
the stats dir (used by buildd) should exist whether or not it would be used.
I've removed the check, so this will no longer occur.

Thanks for finding this!

Regards,
Roger

Bug#539608: gpsd: USBAUTO not set to true, causing hotplugging to fail

2009-08-02 Thread Sascha Silbe

Package: gpsd
Version: 2.39-2
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Finally had a chance to try out gpsd again. Thanks for fixing #515085!

By default USBAUTO is set to false in /etc/default/gpsd, thus automatic
starting of gpsd during hotplug (as advertised by the Start gpsd
automatically on boot? debconf question) doesn't work with manual
intervention.
While /etc/default/gpsd says it's automatically and should only be
modified by running dpkg-reconfigure gpsd, even with -plow there's no
corresponding debconf question.

Bug#539609: RFA: file-rc -- Alternative boot mechanism using a single configuration file

2009-08-02 Thread Roland Rosenfeld
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the file-rc package.

The package description is:
This package provides an alternative mechanism to boot the system, to
shut it down and to change runlevels. The /etc/rc?.d/* links will be
converted into one single configuration file /etc/runlevel.conf
instead, which is easier to administrate than symlinks, and is also
 more flexible.
 .
The package will automatically convert your existing symlinks into
the file method on installation, and convert the file back into
symlinks on removal. Both mechanisms are compatible through
 /etc/init.d/rc, /etc/init.d/rcS, /usr/sbin/update-rc.d, and
 /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d scripts.

At the moment this package requires some action because it is required
to implement insserv functionality here, see Bug#539591.
At the moment I personally won't find the time to dig deep enough into
insserv to code this.

So I request for an adopter of this package.

Tscho

Sorry for the long delay on this.

I think it's a bad idea to put this into postinst as not all printers need
additional files download from the web. Users are expected to read the file
README.Debian in /usr/share/doc/package name when something like this
happens. I tried to make the text in this file more clear on this. If you still

Bug#536903: Intend to NMU

2009-08-02 Thread Simon McVittie
Hi,
Thanks for your contribution to keeping Debian RC-bug-free; from a quick
skim-read your patch looks like an improvement.

However, I'm not sure whether Debian really benefits enough from having
bogosort to resolve this RC bug by fixing it rather than removing it:

* without the -n option it's an implementation of a pathologically bad
sorting algorithm (admittedly, this is deliberate)
* GNU coreutils (which is Essential: yes) now has shuf(1), which shuffles lines
  like bogosort -n does
* the build system is set up for autoconf 2.13 (!)
* upstream's README says: I wrote bogosort to learn a bit about automake and
autoconf and because alsaplayer doesn't let me play files randomly. Debian
has better (and less outdated) examples of autotools usage (notably, GNU
hello is intended as an example), and shuf(1) covers the latter
* it's had 5 uploads in 7.5 years, one of which was an NMU
* popcon reports 92 installations and 10 votes

So, perhaps it would be better to resolve this RC bug by removing bogosort
from the distribution?

On the other hand, I'd be willing to consider sponsoring your NMU if you can
convince me that having bogosort is of benefit to Debian...

Regards,
Simon

Bug#539617: dpkg: Add option to suppress progress display while reading database

2009-08-02 Thread Frans Pop
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.15.3.1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

When the output of package installations are logged to a file, the
progress counter updates while reading the database are distracting.

This is especially the case in Debian Installer where multiple package
installations are started and all are logged to the syslog. For an
example of the result, see the syslog attached in [1].

Another example is buildd logs, for example [2].

The attached patch adds an option --no-db-progress that allows to suppress
the progress updates in such situations.

If you'd like any changes (maybe a more generic name for the option?) or
if I've forgotten anything, then please let me know.

The patch is based on current git:

Bug#539581: jackd always tries to run realtime

2009-08-02 Thread Adrian Knoth
On Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 01:37:46AM -0500, TheGZeus wrote:

Hi!

 Severity: important

I usually don't mess with severity levels, but as the fix for this bug
is really easy, I've lowered it to minor.

I cannot get jackd to run, as it continues to try running in realtime
 mode,

Yes, that's the new default. Upstream has changed to realtime as the
default. It's the normal way of running jackd, so you'd now need to
tell jackd NOT to use realtime prios.

Unfortunately, this change isn't documented, yet. I'll add a NEWS file
to the package and probably send a manpage fix, too.

Within some months, everybody will know that realtime is the default. ;)

JFTR, here's the relevant code:

jack/jackd/jackd.c:

static int realtime = 1;

[..]

   switch (opt) {

case 'L':
realtime = 0;
break;
[..]
case 'R':
/* this is now the default */
realtime = 1;
break;

Is it asking me to completely log out of every shell, X, etc before I
 can use it?

You can run it without realtime prios: This is done by passing -L to
jackd, i.e. something like this:

   $ jackd -L -d alsa ...

Running it with realtime prios would really mean to re-logon to X, since
the limits are set by PAM upon login. Note that this is only necessary
if you answer YES to the debconf question (dpkg-reconfigure -phigh
jackd)

HTH

PS: If you still have trouble getting jackd running, feel free to reply
to this bug.

Bug#531978: [Pkg-phototools-devel] Bug#531978: libgphoto2: Please modernize udev rules

2009-08-02 Thread Cyril Brulebois
tag 531978 pending
thanks

Martin Pitt martin.p...@ubuntu.com (05/06/2009):
I recently did some ramblings about modernizing libgphoto2's udev
rules to work in a Linux world without hal [1]. I added a new udev
rule mode 136 and while I was at it, replaced the slow
check-ptp-camera shell script with a more efficient udev db query.
The patch got committed upstream now.

Yep, got it in 2.4.6.5, which I'm currently working on.

This debdiff applies it to the Debian package and also moves udev rule
creation from postinst to debian/rules. This is possible now, since
from udev 136 on, rules are shipped in /lib/udev/rules.d/, thus avoid
 becoming conffiles.

That's quite welcome. I've tweaked it to use override_dh_installudev
given I've just moved to using dh, and hopefully that shouldn't break
too much on non-Linux architectures.

I guess we want to keep an eye on the check-mtp-device thingy in the
-port0 package, which is being handled a bit similarly to the
check-ptp-device one; although no rules are generated from there.

Upload should happen in experimental in a few (hours|days).

Thanks for that really appreciated patch.

Mraw,
KiBi.

2009-08-02 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Cyril Brulebois k...@debian.org (02/08/2009):
Thanks for that really appreciated patch.

A couple of questions though:
| Files in second .changes but not in first
| -
| -rw-r--r-- root/root /etc/udev/rules.d/z60_libgphoto2-2.rules
| -rw-r--r-- root/root /usr/share/doc/libgphoto2-2/README.apidocs
| -rw-r--r-- root/root DEBIAN/conffiles
| -rwxr-xr-x root/root DEBIAN/preinst
|
| Files in first .changes but not in second
| -
| -rw-r--r-- root/root /usr/share/doc/libgphoto2-2-dev/DAEMON.gz
| -rwxr-xr-x root/root /lib/udev/check-ptp-camera

Did you observe that? The first file seems to use the deprecated filename
scheme, doesn't it? Also, it looks quite empty, so I'm not sure everything's
working properly. Quoting it:
| # udev rules file for libgphoto2 devices (for udev 136 version)
| # Created from this library:
| # libgphoto2 2.4.6.5gcc, ltdl, EXIF
| # libgphoto2_port 0.8.0 gcc, ltdl, USB, serial without locking
| #
| # this file is autogenerated, local changes will be LOST on upgrades
| SUBSYSTEM!=usb, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end
| ENV{DEVTYPE}!=usb_device, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end
| ACTION!=add, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end
|
| ENV{ID_USB_INTERFACES}==, IMPORT{program}=usb_id --export %p
|
|
| LABEL=libgphoto2_rules_end

I didn't apply the hal patch yet, but it'd be appreciated if you could let me
know if that's expected. I'm going to push my current work to the experimental
branch of our packaging repository; possibly with the 3rd of your patches later
today. Comments/fixes are appreciated.

Mraw,
KiBi.

Bug#539482: texlive-base-bin: bibtex should use the alternatives system

2009-08-02 Thread Jakub Wilk

* Vincent Danjean vdanjean...@free.fr, 2009-08-02, 01:11:

There are currently at least 2 working bibtex implementations in Debian,
i.e. nbibtex and TeX Live's one, and there's going to be more (see bugs
#412085, #535116).

Therefore, I believe it would be a good idea for TeX Live's bibtex to
start using the Debian alternatives system, so that other
implementations could be made available under the /usr/bin/bibtex and
/usr/share/man/man1/bibtex.1.gz names.

Does all the bibtex implementations have the same interface (ie the same
command-line options) ?
It is required if want to be able to use alternatives.

All the implementations accept the most basic syntax, i.e.:

bibtex AUXFILE[.aux]

nbibtex supports the -min-crossref=N, -help and -version, but not -terse.
Unfortunately, other implementations support none of these options.
However, if you believe that it is essential to have all of them
implemented (I don't think it's necessary), I am willing to contribute

patches for pybtex and (possibly) pybliographer.

Bug#539619: xdg-utils: xdg-open fails to detect recursive calls to itself

2009-08-02 Thread David Bremner
Package: xdg-utils
Version: 1.0.2-6.1
Severity: normal

Currently xdg-open falls back to sensible-browser for url schemas it
does not understand. My current sensible-browser is arora, which
calls xdg-open for schemas it does not understand. Neither of them
understands mailto. I think you can see where this is going :). It
would be nice if there was some way to detect these kind of loops,
maybe via the environment. If e.g. xdg-open set a variable like
XDG_OPEN_CALLED_ME then at least clients could check that, and
xdg-open could as well, although that relies on the other part of the
loop not enthusiastically cleaning the environment.

The notification icon is a plugin now and can be enabled and configured
from Edit → Plugins.

Not having it enabled by default does seem like a bad default though.

A dictionary with reasonable quality is very difficult to build by

It is really hard to find the source of a dictionary which is made about
10 years ago. If there are license problems on these dictionaries, the
stardic and xdict also should be removed from Debian repos. We really
could not GUESS where the dictionaries come from. I will try to contact
to authors of these dictionaries. But don't be so hopeful.

And don't tell me about the kde 4.3 because i've seen that it works without

Hi,

JFTR: I *might* orphan (as in upload with the appropriate settings) all

step in can get started more easily. It looks like it's planned for end

take care of it. Upstreams currently have no other packagers handy, and
are (also) busy with other things.

Sid is currently not installable due to broken dependencies (related to
apt, so a failure on apt-utils is logical). To work around this: install
testing (squeeze) and upgrade to sid afterwards.

You could have seen that for yourself by checking debootstrap's log file:

Bug#537260: Please update duplicity package

2009-08-02 Thread Micah Anderson

Hi,

* Alexander Zangerl a...@snafu.priv.at [2009-07-16 23:31-0400]:

The newer duplicity stable release, 0.5.18 which was released May 20,
contains a significant number of fixes from the one currently in the
archive. Could you update the package? If you cannot do it soon, I
 am happy to NMU it.

i'll put in some effort over the weekend.

Any progress with this?

The current development release is 0.6.02, released July 8, 2009, it
contains some very useful features, such as Checkpoint/Restart
capabilities, which would fix at least one bug in the BTS. Uploading
this version to Experimental would be a useful exercise IMHO.

i'm not happy with the idea of maintaining three versions (lenny's ancient
one, testing/unstable and an experimental one), especially as in the recent
past even the major version switches haven't caused much breakage.

Makes sense.

i will therefore package 0.6, test it and upload it for unstable+testing,
likely followed by an etch-backport build as well.

I like that idea, since 0.6 is getting all the interesting things now.

Bug#539623: Phonon does not work with Qt !!

2009-08-02 Thread Vincent Fourmond
Package: phonon
Version: 4:4.5.2-1
Severity: important

  Hello,

Phonon, as is, does not work with Qt4. I keep getting errors in the
spirit of:

WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin
could not be loaded

But, for sure, as can be seen below, the xine backend is installed
all right. Digging out, I've found that just adding a symlink from
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/phonon_backend to /usr/lib/qt4/plugins is enough.

Would you please kindly fix this problem ?

BTW, it seems to me that I reported this problem some time ago, and
that it was fixed, but maybe I've dreamt that one.

  Many thanks !

Vincent, glad to have his videos back after playing around...

Bug#535833: marked as done (general: Slow internet on iceweasel, epiphany and so on...)

Sure, having it working is important. Is it more important than keeping
those (often new) users for whom Debian appears useless because of its
 perceived poor network performance?

It would be nice if both worked. But, in the absence of good heuristics
for detecting broken networking, this is probably something that should
not be done automatically.

Anyway, IIRC this is now solved in glibc by sending out the queries in
parallel and returning the first answer you get.

OK. What happens to the other answer(s) though? Does this mean that
getaddrinfo(3) skips slow replies completely? This is surely equally
broken if so?

For anyone with broken networking, the test program here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=5;filename=addrtest.c;att=1;bug=441857
will test local name resolving in glibc; just replace ip6-localhost with
a hostname to check.

 | The idea behind the patch isn't bad, but the implementation proposed
 | here is too naïve. The assumption that you only want working IPv6
 | name resolution when you have a globally-scoped IPv6 address is too
 | simplistic.

FWIW, it roughly matches what Mac OS X and Windows do.

And it's not considered broken on these platforms too?

I guess the proportion of IPv6 users is vastly lower on these platforms
due to the general networking clue level of the users, and that Windows
has had fully functional IPv6 networking for a much shorter time than
GNU/Linux.

 | Not only do you have the local loopback, you also have link-local
 | addresses which you can legitimately use. Does zeroconf support
 | these? Fundamentally breaking IPv6 for these use cases to work around
 | broken routing hardware is IMO a step too far.

 Does anybody use IPv6-only link-local?

Probably not conciously; it's intended to be used automatically. A
quick google shows Avahi does use these (with some caveats).

IPv6 has the concept of Scope, and these scopes include Node/Host,
Link, Site, Organisation, and Global. To assume that IPv6 networking
is only active when you have one or more Global addresses is an
incorrect assumption. With the previous glibc patch, my networking
broke as the Global link went up and down.

Roger

Bug#539624: segfaults if the system doesn't have hal

2009-08-02 Thread Rogério Brito
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.12.3-1
Severity: important

Hi.

I just installed rhythmbox on my system (that's using only a window
manager and no desktop environment).

Unfortunately, rhythmbox segfaults when hal is not running:

,
| rbr...@chagas:~$ rhythmbox
| [1] 2056
| rbr...@chagas:~$
| (rhythmbox:2056): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: remote volume monitor
with dbus name org.gtk.Private.HalVolumeMonitor is not supported
|
| ** (rhythmbox:2056): WARNING **: Failed to initialize hal : (null)

| libhal.c 3126 : LibHalContext *ctx is NULL
|
| [1]+ Segmentation fault rhythmbox
| rbr...@chagas:~$
`

This behavior is, of course, undesired, for some reasons:

 * a program should not crash out of the blue;
 * if hal is indeed a hard dependency, it should not be declared as a
   recommends---this is, of course, a little mistake in packaging;
 * hal is being declared deprecated for some time now;
 * more importantly, it seems that there is a problem with a null pointer
as indicated above---this might lead to a security problem
   (perhaps?).

As a side note, if possible, it would be quite welcome if there were a
rhythmbox-gtk package for those that have to survive with weaker
systems.

Thanks, Rogério Brito.

Bug#539626: false memleak positive with realloc()

2009-08-02 Thread George Danchev
Package: cppcheck
Version: 1.34-1

cppcheck erroneously reports e memory leak when used by realloc in the code
snippet shown below.

cppcheck -a test.c
Checking test.c...
[test.c:27]: (all) Memory leak: buf

test.c

#include stdio.h
#include stdlib.h

void func()
{
   char * buf, * new_buf;

   buf = calloc( 1, sizeof(char) );

   if ( ! ( new_buf = realloc ( (char*)buf, 2) ) )
 free(buf); // ENOMEM
   else
 free(new_buf); // OK
}

int main()
{
   while(1)
 func();
   return 0;
}

If the area pointed to by ptr was moved by realloc(), or in other words the
the reallocation succeeds, a free(ptr) is called internally, hence there is no
a memory leak with `buf', and we should free(new_buf).

If the reallocation fails the original block is left untouched, i.e. not freed
or moved, hence we should free(buf), and should *not* call free(new_buf);

thanks

Bug#516324: pydb: please prepare for the changes in python-support

2009-08-02 Thread Simon McVittie
I've checked in a proposed NMU to python-modules svn (since I'm a member of
that team), as r9244. I consider this to be an NMU, since I take no
particular ongoing responsibility for the package.

I intend to upload this NMU once I've tested it properly, unless the
maintainer or another team member gets there first (in which case feel free
to incorporate my changes into a maintainer upload).

(I have done trivial testing of a package produced by svn-buildpackage, but
I have not yet built it in a clean chroot, and I haven't made non-trivial use
of pydb or used the Emacs integration.)

Simon
