Bug#570350: linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64: kernel BUG

Can you Berni try the switch and see if it helps? /Georg I am still unable to reproduce this problem, but I do now understand what Chrome is doing that is unusual: the sandbox feature uses pid namespaces. Based on this information, I found a change included in Linux 2.6.27 which is described as fixing a bug that seems to be the same as this. The attached patch is applicable to the latest Debian stable kernel. Please test this fix by following the instructions at http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html#s-common-official. If you have trouble with this I can prepare packages for you to download. Bug#573912: linux-2.6: please enable ramzswap/compcache
On Thu, 2010-03-18 at 14:36 +1100, Trent W. Buck wrote: Vagrant Cascadian wrote: Please consider setting CONFIG_RAMZSWAP (a.k.a. compcache), which enables a ram based compressed swap device. i think it can be enabled as a module, but i'm not sure. This feature is very useful to thin clients, embedded devices, or other environments with limited ram and no conventional swap device available. This is also useful for Debian Live images generated using the live-helper and live-initramfs packages. Using Sid's live-helper to build an Ubuntu 10.04 live image already results in a 25% ramzswap, so I guess Ubuntu have patched compcache into their default .32 kernel. Would you like me to add this to 2.6.32 for squeeze, then? Bug#572420: Please change this bug to libsdl1.2debian
I own both G3's and G4's running Debian Stable. I can take them down for limited periods (a day or so) to run other versions of Debian. If someone who knows what he/she's doing can walk me through the steps (I'm an experienced system admin. But I'm not a developer.) I'm willing to do whatever needs to be done to get this bug fixed. Let me know where to begin... Rick On Apr 3, 2010, at 7:14 PM, peter green wrote: peter green wrote: The bug is actually in libsdl1.2debian. It has improper compile flags for powerpc g3. What these are I do not know. looking at the build log -maltivec seems to be the smoking gun. It appears the upstream configure script is looking for altivec support at build time and enabling it if it detects it (which is the right thing to do when building for your own system but the WRONG thing to do when building distribution packages) Ideally this sort of issue needs access to ppc hardware both with and without altivec to nail it down (you need to do the builds on machines with altivec support and then check they work on machines without it) . I'll try to take a look using qemu but I can't promise anything. I've come up with a patch which I beleive should fix this but building with qemu is extremely slow and in any case to properly test this really needs hardware both with (to do the build) and without (to test it) altivec to properly test. anyone on debian-powerpc have access to both and willing to test this? --- libsdl1.2-1.2.14/debian/rules 2010-04-04 00:05:14.0 +0100 +++ libsdl1.2-1.2.14.new/debian/rules 2010-04-03 22:54:00.0 +0100 @@ -68,8 +68,10 @@ endif # Don't use PlayStation 3 Cell driver on powerpc +# Don't use altivec, since debian supports ppc systems that don't have it ifeq ($(DEB_BUILD_ARCH_CPU),powerpc) confflags += --enable-video-ps3=no + confflage += --enable-altivec=no endif # Only build ALSA support on Linux targets -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#576396: empathy: Long text expends chat room window when contact list is displayed
Package: empathy Version: 2.30.0-1 Severity: normal Hi, When in a Jabber chat room, if the text I type is longer than the available room in the input field, the window expends in width automatically, rather than adding extra lines. Bug#514131: [linux-image-2.6.26-1-686]: network card 3ccfem656b (3c59x.ko) doesn't work
I guess it's now on me to apologize for a late response. ;-) I today installed and tested 2.6.32 and the problem seems not to exist with this version. Unfortunately not all installed software works with this kernel as it comes out of the box (e.g. NFS, nVidia, etc.) Is there a chance to get a fix for 2.6.26 ? Bug#450483: Pending! DEB_CONFIGURE_SCRIPT_ENV and cross-building

I have now improved CDBS to support cross-building, based on the discussions in this bugreport. CDBS now also provides a few convenience variables to ease crossbuild support for other classes than makefile.mk and autotools.mk. I noticed that qmake.mk, cmake.mk and scons.mk all explicitly set CC, and wonder if if would make sense to do a similar hack as with the DEB_MAKE_ENVVARS. I've only got experience of CMake out of that list and it tends to need more than just DEB_MAKE_ENVVARS to cross-build properly. It can work but we need to use a CMakeListsCross.txt file to get CMake to understand how to find the cross libraries etc. There's some discussion about this upstream with CMake: http://www.cmake.org/pipermail/cmake/2008-July/022581.html Wookey? -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ pgpJCtf8kCWAZ.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#541749: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the fortunes-fr package
Dear maintainer of fortunes-fr and Debian translators, Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the fortunes-fr Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS. I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in four days, so I will proceed with the NMU. The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail. The package is currently translated to: cs de fr ja nl pt ru sv vi Among these, the following translations are incomplete: none If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get ANOTHER mail with the translation to update. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report against the fortunes-fr package so I can incorporate them in the build. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Saturday, April 10, 2010. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. The POT file is attached to this mail. If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Otherwise the following will happen (or already has): Tuesday, March 30, 2010 : send the first intent to NMU notice to the package maintainer. Sunday, April 04, 2010 : send this notice Saturday, April 10, 2010 : (midnight) deadline for receiving translation updates Sunday, April 11, 2010 : build the package and upload it to DELAYED/7-day send the NMU patch to the BTS Sunday, April 18, 2010 : NMU uploaded to incoming Thanks for your efforts and time. -- -- # SOME DESCRIPTIVE TITLE. # Copyright (C) YEAR THE PACKAGE'S COPYRIGHT HOLDER # This file is distributed under the same license as the PACKAGE package. # FIRST AUTHOR em...@address, YEAR. # #, fuzzy msgid msgstr Project-Id-Version: PACKAGE VERSION\n Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: fortunes...@packages.debian.org\n POT-Creation-Date: 2010-04-04 10:32+0200\n PO-Revision-Date: YEAR-MO-DA HO:MI+ZONE\n Last-Translator: FULL NAME em...@address\n Language-Team: LANGUAGE l...@li.org\n MIME-Version: 1.0\n Content-Type: text/plain; charset=CHARSET\n Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n #. Bug#576405: linux-image-2.6.26: Deadlock during combined NFS3/NFS4 use
Package: linux-image-2.6.26 Version: nfsfix.1 Severity: important When an export is exported and mounted via autofs using BOTH NFSv3 and NFSv4 the NFSv4 one deadlocks. Setup - transition from v3 to v4. System A is still perusing the old map: cat /etc/auto.local | grep iPodResolution iPodResolution -rsize=4096,wsize=4096,rw eden:/exports/md4/videoiPod System B is using the newever version of same map with a v4 mount: cat /var/yp/auto.local | grep iPodResolution iPodResolution -fstype=nfs4 eden:/md4/videoiPod If system B is writing to the mount and A is reading from it B starts getting I/O errors/BAD FDs. If B is running from disk lots of things fail. If B is running diskless - total lock up. Same setup with V3 only has been working flawlessly for 5+ years. Same setup with V4 only (when the v3 machines are off) seems to work OK as well. Fairly easy to reproduce. I am not sure at this point if autofs has any role in this and I will not be in a position to retest until 19th. Apologies. Bug#576407: buildd: It would be nice if NSSDATABASES allowed comments
Package: buildd Version: 0.60.0 Severity: wishlist There is a subtle incompatibility between buildd and schroot. schroot ships a file called /etc/schroot/default/nssdatabases like this: # System databases to copy into the chroot from the host system. # # database name passwd shadow [...] buildd, in turn, puts a file called 25nssdatabases in /etc/schroot/setup.d which does this: while read db; do dup_nss $db ${CHROOT_PATH}/etc/$db done $NSSDATABASES which makes schroot to fail when fb is one of the commented lines. I first fixed this in my system in this way: grep -v ^# $NSSDATABASES | while read db; do dup_nss $db ${CHROOT_PATH}/etc/$db done Then I realized that this was already fixed in schroot in 20nssdatabases: while read db; do if echo $db | egrep -q '^(#|$)' ; then continue fi dup_nss $db ${CHROOT_PATH}/etc/$db done $NSSDATABASES Since there is at least one program which uses comments for the NSSDATABASES file, it would be nice if all of them supported comments. Bug#576274: additional info
Hi there, with some help from one of the maintainers I found the latest package from sid and installed it: http://packages.debian.org/sid/linux-image-2.6.32-4-686 But the problem remains unchanged. And I still don't have any meaningful log reports. I wanted to add that in former kenel versions (pre 2.6.31) the problem was less frequent, but more severe (e.g. crash also took down x input) . So it might be a different problem. Also when the screen goes blank it sometimes takes on different shades of grey. From almost white to grey to black. Backlight is on. And when rebooted the screen stays that way until the screen powers all the way down. With the new kernel version I had an uptime of about 3 hours and only two pm-suspends until the problem occured. Bug#575644: pptp-linux mtu mru bug
Hi Ivan Sorry for the delayed answer. I have looked through the code now and it looks like these two options are not part of the pptp-linux functions. The MTU is checked only for GRE (which I assume you are using), but this is only checking the socket and not the config file. So it never sets it. o...@quartz:~/build/debian/pptp-linux/pptp-linux-1.7.2$ grep -ri mtu * pptp_gre.c: warn(transmitted GRE packet triggered an ICMP destination unreachable, fragmentation needed, or exceeds the MTU of the network interface); pptp_gre.c:#define IP_MTU 14 pptp_gre.c: if(getsockopt(fd, IPPROTO_IP, IP_MTU, optval, optlen) 0) pptp_gre.c: warn(getsockopt: IP_MTU: %d\n, optval); And MRU I can not see how it can be useful to set at all, really. o...@quartz:~/build/debian/pptp-linux/pptp-linux-1.7.2$ grep -ri mru * I have also checked the source for 1.7.0-2 version in old stable. It is the same there. As you state that this bug dates back to the etch release and 1.7.0-2 is for etch, I can not tell whether this dates back from the original source before etch. I simply do not have that source available. So there are a few options as I see it 1) If you are using GRE and you think this function should be available for GRE then I can make this a wishlist bug. 2) If this function is available for other ppp tunnels but not this type, I suggest we forward the bug to the ppp pakage. 3) We close the bug stating that these options are not supported and thus this is not a bug, and that this should be done using iptables. Just as you have done. 4) Set it to minor severity so that this can be documented in a README file. I suggest 3, but you may have other opinions. // Ola On Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 12:24:48AM +0300, Ivan Yudin wrote: Package: pptp-linux Version: 1.7.2-4 When I get my pptp up, mru and mtu does not change even if i type mtu 1492 mru 1492 in a config. Bug#576411: fusionforge: Package should be constructed from upstream tarball
Package: fusionforge Severity: wishlist Hi. The current way the Debian package is built looks like a native package. Upstream .orig source contains the debian/ subdir (which is actually not shipped in upstream tarball I think). I think it would be better to separate all that is Debian-related in the Debian-specific source package and package from upstream sources which would not contain a debian/ subdir (even though the debian/ subdir could still be managed in upstream SVN). Bug#565202: afio: verification against filesystem does not work
Hi Erik, Sorry for the late reply, looks like I did not notice these bug mail messages the first time among the spam.. Yes, I confirm that this is either a bug or an undocumented shortcoming, depending on how you look at it. As to the why: the -r code was not written to perform a 100% solid comparison, its main purpose is to discover bit errors on the backup medium. The manpage already has something about this: The -r option verifies the file contents of the files in the archive against the files on the filesystem, but does not cross-check details like permission bits on files, nor does it cross-check that archived directories or other non-file entities still exist on the filesystem. but this warning should be extended I guess. A fix would be to stat() the file on the filesystem when the file in the archive has 0 length. Cheers, Koen. Bug#572245: Artistic License has embedded tabs
Hello. In this bug: http://bugs.debian.org/572245 a user complains that the file containing the Artistic License (among many other others) has embedded tabs, which might result in the text not being displayed the same on all systems. I would fix this myself in the Debian base-files package, but the license is an official document and I don't think it would be right for me to do that. However, this would be very easy to fix on your side: expand Artistic A mv A Artistic If the new file is included in a future perl release (say 5.10.2), I will take that as the original. [ Note: The FSF has already done this: They have just expanded all their licenses in text format at ftp.gnu.org ]. Squid, like all HTTP intermediaries these days doesn't really pipeline - its insecure and problematic. APT should open more connections rather than pipeline (this is mandated by the current HTTP WG recommendations - the '2 per server' connection limit is gone, replaced by a 'be sensible' exhortation instead. Its possible squid has a bug here, in which case I'd expect wireshark analysis to help show it up. Just remembered something - I did quite a lot of copying off manually mounted via v3 exports which were at the same time accessed elsewhere via v4. So this is probably autofs related and needs to me mounted under an autofs point to be triggered. The only reference I have been able to find to something similar was in the fedora bugs for v9. By the look of it using autofs to set up a Unix workstation network properly has become something of a lost art :( The setup can be found in details at: http://foswiki.sigsegv.cx/bin/view/Net/LinuxNFSv4 I have used the v3 setup in production environments with tens of users and on my home network for many years and the only reason to look at v4 at all is that most apps like firefox, etc have now moved to use sqlite which locks/unlocks like crazy so v3 starts hitting performance limitations. What does maintaining that package involve? Actual linguistic work or just packaging the stuff in a plausibly correct manner? The packaging pretty much works already. Not much work is required to keep that part updated. However, the word list is rather small and outdated. Many words that are factually correct end up marked as wrong. This needs to be improved. Bug#576409: Packaging termit for Debian
Hi Evgeny, I've just compiled termit and love it. The fact that it uses lua makes it the perfect terminal to use together with the awesome window manager. I filled a Request For Packaging in Debian: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=576409 Maybe I'll have time to package it myself some day. Two notes to make life easier for the packager: * Please add license headers to every individual source file * Maybe you'd like to make fewer major releases, now that you're on github. A version number of 2.4.0 would indicate a very mature project, but termit is only less then a year old. So I recommend to increase the version number only every three to six months. This way the users and the packagers know, when it makes sense to make an upgrade. The power users and developers can still download every commit as a tarball from github or compile directly from the git checkout. Thank you for Termit! Hi Jonathan, grfcodec is failing to build on all buildds [1], with output like this: Not all, it works on a few architectures. The reason for this is that grfcodec uses upx to do binary compression, which only works on the more common architectures. I've already prepared a new upload that simply skips the compression, I'll upload that today or tomorrow. Gr. Matthijs signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#575536: mayavi2 segfaults under VNC

Have you ever tried running mayavi2 under VNC? I don't have a terribly good idea of what the problem might be, and I have not tried running mayavi2 under VNC. I can reproduce the problem using vnc4server. Ryan Niebur did some pretty interesting debuging, and I suspect that he is right that a sizer is called with a None parent. However, to figure out where this is happening in the Python code, even using the stack trace that Yaroslav attached, is non trivial. I have tried running under gdb and under vnc4server, but somehow I get a different segfault that I don't understand (and should investigate). Yaroslav, could you investigate for me where the segfault is happening in the Python code. For this, you can zcat /usr/share/doc/python2.6/gdbinit.gz in ~/.gdbinit, and navigate the stack in gdb after the segfault. You can use 'pyframev' to something like the current Python frame. If you can give me an idea of where the sizer with a None value is initialised, or which sizer it is, it would help (I have a hunch that it is going to be the frame holding the VTK render window). Another option would be if you can give me access (say VNC :) to a box for which running gdb exhibits the right segfault. Sorry for not spending more time on that problem alone, I am swamped. Bug#576418: Password changing procedure is not optimal
Package: virtuoso-opensource Severity: normal Tags: upstream Changing password is supposed to be possible using virtuoso-t +pwdold dba +pwdba $DBA_PW +pwddav $DBA_PW but this method doesn't return any information about whether the change succeeded. Because of this, we can't test either if the current password is the default password. The current solution is to run the service and issue a password change through an SQL command, which provides a useful return value. The problem is that requires us to expose for a short time the server with the possibly default password. There is also apparently no way to change the password if it is forgotten. Upstream has been asked about it on virtuoso-users@ Cheers Arthur -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I wanted to add that in former kenel versions (pre 2.6.31) the problem was less frequent, but more severe (e.g. crash also took down x input) . So it might be a different problem. Also when the screen goes blank it sometimes takes on different shades of grey. From almost white to grey to black. Backlight is on. Bug#576423: please consider shipping configuration snippets to use squid as a .deb cacher
Package: squid Version: 2.7.STABLE9-1 Severity: wishlist Hi, squid has been repeatedly mentioned as a replacement for the many different apt caching programs, such as just configure squid to always cache .deb files and keep them for some (long) time. Bug#231862: closed by John Ferlito jo...@inodes.org (libvorbis0a: oggenc still dies sometimes with floating point exception)
Hello John, On Sat, Apr 03, 2010 at 03:33:08AM +, Debian Bug Tracking System wrote: This bug is ancient and is most likely fixed. Feel free to re-open if you don't think that is the case. What kind of bug maintenance is this The bug was reported with a backtrace and an offer to provide the file, and yet not a *single* reply was made to this bug, all the years. Then you come along and state that it is ancient and most likely fixed. First, you could have analyzed the backtrace and handed it to upstream to get it fixed (like the previous one, cited in this bug report). If further debugging was needed, you could have asked for the file and used it for debugging. By the way, there are porter machines for Debian developers, where they can debug software. Of course, you could also have worked with me, the reporter, to obtain further information, try patches etc. And finally, if you simply hoped that a commit fixed the bug (e.g. because you couldn't spot it and upstream was unwilling to help) then you could have *asked* in the bug to try the latest version and see if this bug was closed. Waiting like 7 years and then replying that the bug is ancient and most likely fixed is probably the worst course of action I could expected, even if you have no time (possibility) to debug this issue (which would be sad for a DD). It really smells like hope the guy is no longer around and see that my bug count is getting down, because many bugs let my software (me?) look bad. I hope this all was just a bad day and a gross misunderstanding on my side. For the content of the bug. I took the file, transferred it to an alpha (not the original machine, which is dead by now, but some later model) and tried encoding it again (unfortunately I did not note down the exact command line options I used, so I encoded it twice with different bit rates). In both cases, it worked. So I might have been lucky, but I rather assume (given the error) that the general switch to IEEE arithmetic on alpha in gcc several years ago fixed the problem. So in essence, closing the bug was right but the way was *way wrong*. Bug#576424: reason?
[ Disclaimer: I don't maintain nor dput nor dupload ] [ Disclaimer 2: This is not a threat mail. I took the opportunity to thank the maintainers of this package for care: thanks you!, but I don't understand a logic behind this report] Hi Osamu, Although I use dupload, dput must have done somthing right. Next two questions are just out of curiosity. So do you want to move to other software just because it has more popcon votes? Also, do you think that better popcon votes means better quality? Any objection? I don't see a reason to document dput *instead of* dupload. Maybe it'd be better to document dput *in addition to* dupload? -- Eugene V. Bug#575951: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#575951: samba: Samba 3.2.5 won't authenticate to Win2008R2 DC.
Quoting David Mitchell (mitch...@ucar.edu): Package: samba Version: 2:3.2.5-4lenny9 Severity: important The Debian stable version of Samba is unable to authenticate to w2k8r2 in some cases. This is fixed in the upstream Samba as of version 3.4. The patch applies easily to Samba 3.2.5. Bug#557209: [reports bogus package updates]
Hi all, Thanks for reporting. It seems you're using 1.1.27. So, before making an effort to isolate these problems, I kindly ask you to try to reproduce them in 1.1.38. Apticron has changed a lot since Lenny release (same for apt-get and aptitude). Btw, the current way to get pending upgrades is: PKGNAMES=`/usr/bin/apt-get -q -y --ignore-hold --allow-unauthenticated -s dist-upgrade | \ /bin/grep ^Inst | /usr/bin/cut -d\ -f2 | /usr/bin/sort` So, if it keeps sending wrong upgrade lists, it can even be an issue in other apt tools. Bug#576426: lintian: build-depends-on-python-dev-with-no-arch-any
Hi Frank Lin, On Sun, Apr 04, 2010 at 05:20:18PM +0200, Frank Lin PIAT wrote: Regarding Lintian error build-depends-on-python-dev-with-no-arch-any The python policy (appendix A)[1], mention that: Build dependencies for Python dependent packages must be declared for every Python version that the package is built for. The python-all-dev should be used when building modules for any or all Python versions. To build for a specific version or versions, Build-Depend on pythonX.Y-dev. It also says: Some applications and pure Python modules may be able to build-depend only on python or python-all and not require the -dev packages. Lintian warning[1] is consistent with the later recommendation. Thank you very much for investigating this! I have noticed that warning (it occurs with several other packages that I maintain) but did not so far find time to investigate it as you did. I have made a test, and moinmoin compiles properly when replacing python-dev (= 2.3.5-7) with python-all. The resulting packages are identical (except the files buildinfo.gz and control file, obviously) pbuilder The way I change the control file is a bit hacky, doesn't CDBS deserves a bug report here? CDBS_BUILD_DEPENDS_class_python-distutils = python-all Shall I commit this modification? any better idea? For the moin package: yes, overriding the CDBS autoresolved build-dependency like this seems to be the most elegant approach - made possible in very recent releases of cdbs - thanks for noticing ;-) If you have ideas for improving the CDBS snippet, I would very much appreciate that too. Let's not discuss it here, please do file a separate bugreport if there is the slightest chance of a glimpse of an idea from you. I will just quickly mention that Python policy say may be able to build-depend - i.e. cannot be certain. Which I suspect means CDBS cannot reliably weaken the build-dependencies automatically.
