Bug#594113: task_manager.pl daemon failed to start
Well, you not experiencing problems avoiding Recommends do not really change the Debian definition of the Recommends: stanza: `Recommends' This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency. Nothing defines “absolute”, for me it is (absolute) because: - SYMPA provides a symlink to this third party package - a daemon fail to start without this dependency [...] My question is if it is *possible* to hand-tune. Probably if you are enough skilled to understand the bug and fix it on your own. (As a workaround we could add a note in the README.Debian but I doubt of its effectiveness: it looks like a bug, the first reaction would be to check BTS rather that reading README.Debian). [...] You do not agree that the needed file is possible to create by other means and with other content than installing that package? This file should a be a bundle of root CA certificates, hence there is 2 choices: - You try to collect all the root CA certificates manually to build your own CA file - You install the ca-certificates package to use the CA bundle it provides [...] Because in some special cases it is not needed and gets in the way. I agree when the Recommends add optional features which don't affect the core program. [...] I do feel, however, that your arguments are tied to how you are used to handle package relationships in the past, whereas I believe my arguments are tied to how Debian Policy defines the package relation stanzas. WE are tied on how we understand them: « Recommends: This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency. » What mean “absolute”? And as I wrote earlier on to this bugreport, I do believe that if ca-certificates missing causes sympa to consume all resources on the system, then there is a bug in sympa code which should be filed separately - and passed upstream. It's just a possible consequence, the main problem is that the task_manager daemon doesn't starts. Whatever its role, I think it's a big issue. Bug#594435: Quoted strings in pin specifications do not work
severity 594435 minor thanks On Do, 2010-08-26 at 01:38 +0100, Ben Hutchings wrote: Package: apt Version: 0.7.25.3 Severity: important The *only* example of pinning by origin in apt_preferences(5) is: Package: * Pin: origin Pin-Priority: 999 This implies that strings can be double-quoted and that an empty string must be. In fact, double-quoted strings do not match their contents; the quote characters are presumably treated literally. Not really. It only applies to empty strings which can not be represented otherwise in a meaningful way; for example, specifying no value would be invalid (or should be, I did not try it). I personally do not want quoting here, as it just complicates parsing and breaks backwards compatibility. The documentation could state explicitly that quotes are not supported; but this is purely a documentation issue, and thus minor (it may also break translations of the manpage). -- Julian Andres Klode - Debian Developer, Ubuntu Member See http://wiki.debian.org/JulianAndresKlode and http://jak-linux.org/. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. By defining _LARGEFILE_SOURCE, the source is already requesting to the system to internally remap statfs and statvfs to statfs64 and statvfs64. And in addition _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE just makes the explicit 64 bit versions visible, at which point the system was alredy transparently supporting large files. No, defining _FILE_OFFSET_BITS to 64 makes stat* become stat*64. The _LARGEFILE_SOURCE and _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE defines are needed for getting the explicit interfaces, they do not activate the implicit ones. It unconditionally remaps itself the symbols to their 64 bit versions, but they might not be available on the system, the correct way to check for this is by using AC_SYS_LARGEFILE in configure.in. Maybe in theory; in practice, it works perfectly for all our supported architectures. It also does not fix the casted comparisons for some of the statfs and statvfs members which will be now 64 bit wide on 32 bit systems. Bug#594461: apt-setup: Should propose using t-p-u when testing is installed
Package: apt-setup Severity: wishlist After a (short) discussion in -devel, I came up with the proposal of activating testing-proposed-updates when users install testing, in a similar way that we currently propose activating volatile when they install stable. So, sending this as a bug report against apt-setup. I suggest this is done post-squeeze. Quoting Paul Wise (p...@debian.org): On Wed, Aug 25, 2010 at 6:38 PM, Christian PERRIER bubu...@debian.org wrote: Quoting Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org): Hmhm, out of curiosity, why is t-p-u “way riskier”. Mostly because there isn't any large pool of systems using t-p-u the way there is for unstable, so the aging process where we get testing in unstable before migrating the package never happens. This means uploads I wonder whether we (in D-I) could add t-p-u to the list of proposed repositories when users install testing. We already propose security and volatile (defaulting to both added): the same mechanism could be made for t-p-u when users install testing. Sounds like a good idea to me. When they reject t-p-u you could either add it commented out or with pinning such that it is not selected by default but when packages from it are selected then they are kept upgraded within it until the packages migrate to testing itself. AFAIK to achieve that you need pinning priorities 500 and 1000. -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#364295: fltk2 seems more or less dead
Hi, JFTR: despite they updated the license in fall 2009, according to http://www.fltk.org/articles.php?L825 and http://fltk.org/software.php#SVN, fltk 2 is not further developed. Instead fltk 1.3 is the active development branch and the next planned branches are 1.4 and 3.0. There though seem to be actively developed software (like Dillo) based on it, so it may still be nice to have it in Debian. But it will be more work than if there were active development on fltk 2. Bug#592187: [stable] Bug#576838: virtio network crashes again
Hi all, I was finally able to identify the patch series that introduced the fix (they were introduced to -stable in 2.6.33.2): cb63112 net: add __must_check to sk_add_backlog a12a9a2 net: backlog functions rename 51c5db4 x25: use limited socket backlog c531ab2 tipc: use limited socket backlog 37d60aa sctp: use limited socket backlog 9b3d968 llc: use limited socket backlog 230401e udp: use limited socket backlog 20a92ec tcp: use limited socket backlog ab9dd05 net: add limit for socket backlog After applying these to 2.6.32.17, I wasn't able to trigger the failure anymore. What failure? 230401e didn't apply cleanly with git cherry-pick on top of 2.6.32.17, so there might be some additional work needed. @Greg: would it be possible to have these fixes in the next 2.6.32? See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=592187#69 for details: they fix a guest network crash during heavy nfs-io using virtio. These are a lot of patches, looking like they are adding a new feature. I would need to get the ack of the network maintainer before I can add them. David? I don't mean to nag (hm well, maybe I do) and I know you were busy preparing the guard-page fixes, but what's the status of this? In the meantime, we triggered this bug also on barebone hardware using nfs over tcp with default [rw]sizes of about 1MiB. On the real hardware, the kernel oopsed, not only the network stack ... With these patches applied, everything works smoothly. I'd really love to see a stable 2.6.32 ... thanks, greg k-h Regards, Lukas Kolbe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#594461: apt-setup: Should propose using t-p-u when testing is installed
[Christian PERRIER] After a (short) discussion in -devel, I came up with the proposal of activating testing-proposed-updates when users install testing, in a similar way that we currently propose activating volatile when they install stable. One challenge that should be considered, is what should happen when testing become stable, and the meaning of testing-proposed-updates changes. For example now, testing-proposed-updates is packages intended for squeeze, and after the release, it will no longer have packages intended for squeeze. Should those installing testing today keep using testing, or should they get squeeze? If they should get squeeze, the testing-proposed-update source will give them the wrong set of packages after squeeze is released. I believe those installing testing today should get squeeze and continue to use squeeze after the release. At least that is what I expect when I install testing today. I am sure others might believe otherwise, and am not sure which view should have priority. Bug#446888: racoon: After SA is expired it is not able to renew SA and IPSec tunnel fails.
Hi, I think I've been hit by this bug to (not with debian but opensuse) with the version 0.7.1. This seems fixed on version 0.7.3 (on opensuse too). This issue could be due to the idle feature on cisco router, after some idle time the router sends a delete request for both the ISAKMP-SA and IPsec-SA. Racoon 0.7.1 delete the ISAKMP-sa as requested but not the IPsec-SA. At this point the cisco router has deleted its IPsec-sa so no outgoing packets can be decrypted by it. When the IPSec-sa expires on the linux machine, racoon renegotiate both isakmp-sa and ipsec-sa thus reenabling the tunnel. With 0.7.3 the outgoing ipsec-sa is deleted as requested, so this will trigger the renegotiation of both isakmp-sa and ipsec-sa. I'm not 100% sure this is the same bug I experienced but in the original logs we can see delete requests seen nptype=12(delete) and according to Till Kahle timmings the 30min values is the default idle timeout on IOS according to the documentation. For example, attempting to edit a page on wikia.com, or entering a bug report via lauchpad, an infininte number of blank windows appear, each pointing to an address such as: file:///tmp/index.php or file:///tmp/login_status.php This problem was introduced into version 2.0.6 of iceape, and did not occur on previous versions. -- Package-specific info: -- Extensions information Name: Firebug Location: ${PROFILE_EXTENSIONS}/fire...@software.joehewitt.com Status: enabled Name: Iceape Default Theme Location: /usr/lib/iceape/extensions/{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd} Package: iceape-browser Status: enabled Name: Iceape Modern Location: /usr/lib/iceape/extensions/mod...@themes.mozilla.org Package: iceape-browser Status: enabled -- Plugins information -- Addons package information ii iceape-browser 2.0.6-1Iceape Navigator (Internet browser) and Comp -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-486 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/pdksh Versions of packages iceape-browser depends on: ii libasound2 1.0.23-1 shared library for ALSA applicatio ii libatk1.0-0 1.30.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.11.2-2 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libcairo2 1.8.10-4 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.24-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libfontconfig1 2.8.0-2.1generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.4.0-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.4.4-8GCC support library ii libglib2.0-02.24.1-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.20.1-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libhunspell-1.2-0 1.2.11-1 spell checker and morphological an ii libjpeg62 6b1-1The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libnspr4-0d 4.8.4-2 NetScape Portable Runtime Library ii libnss3-1d 3.12.6-3 Network Security Service libraries ii libpango1.0-0 1.28.1-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.44-1 PNG library - runtime ii libsqlite3-03.7.0-1.1SQLite 3 shared library ii libstartup-notification 0.10-1 library for program launch feedbac ii libstdc++6 4.4.4-8 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-62:1.3.3-3X11 client-side library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.6-1X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.7-1X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime iceape-browser recommends no packages. Bug#594468: RM: xulrunner -- ROM; binary packages provided by other packages, now
Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal Latest iceweasel releases in unstable and experimental provide the xulrunner binary packages (xulrunner-1.9.x, xulrunner-1.9.x-dbg, xulrunner-dev, libmozjsyd, libmozjsyd-dbg, libmozjs-dev, spidermonkey-bin ; where x is 1 or 2 and y is 2 or 3). The python-xpcom package is now provided by pyxpcom, and the libmozillainterfaces-java package was removed, as the javaxpcom stack is unsupported. Please thus remove the xulrunner source package and corresponding binary packages from both unstable and experimental (in experimental, only powerpc binaries have not been built yet for iceweasel, but the xulrunner ones are outdated, so please proceed anyways) The removal from testing will be requested when iceweasel = 3.5.11-2 transitions to testing. Bug#594469: hobbit: Non-intuitive and incomplete system clock offset monitoring
Package: hobbit Version: 4.2.0.dfsg-14lenny3 Severity: wishlist hobbit has the (by default disabled) option to warn about bigger system clock offsets on monitored machines. Unfortunately the implementation is incomplete and not really very intuitive: a) It is displayed in the CPU column. IMHO It should either have its own column (clock or so) or be included in the ntpq column where I looked for it first. b) It is not possible to assign a value at which the warning level should go red -- only yellow is possible. It even doesn't argue if you provide two values, but the second one is ignored and higher clock offsets still result in only a yellow state. c) Documentation (correctly) states that you can only give one value to CLOCK in hobbit-clients.cfg, but it is not documented what the effect respectively color of values above the given limit will be. Bug#594472: grub-pc: scary messages and very long boot time after upgrade
Package: grub-pc Version: 1.98+20100804-2 Severity: important Hi, my machine is a standard PC with two SATA disks, bundled as md0 and md1, with /boot on md0, and everything else in a LUKS encrypted container on md1 with LVM inside. So, booting normally works by fetching the kernel and initrd from /boot, then asking for a passphrase to unlock the container, then proceed with the boot process. Yesterday, I upgraded to all the latest and greatest in Testing, which included both new versions of grub-pc and linux-image--2.6.32-5-686-bigmem (I have 8GB RAM in my machine) and grub-pc presented me with a statement like your UUIDs are garbled. I need to regenerate them, or you'll be unable to boot., with my two disks selected as the default devices to regenerate UUIDs for. I accepted, understanding that grub-pc wanted to write new MBRs to the disks, then shut down the machine after the upgrade finished. Today, the machine booted to the point where it would normally ask for the passphrase, but instead, it said: Volume group ev0 not found Skipping volume group ev0 Unable to find LVM volume ev0/root Volume group ev0 not found Skipping volume group ev0 Unable to find LVM volume ev0/swap After several (5?) minutes where the machine didn't do anything I was able to see, the screen was suddenly flushed with a large number of messages like: /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (10715) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md1 (10716) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (10717) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md1 (10718) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (10719) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md1 (10720) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (10721) Unlocking the disk /dev/md1 (md1_crypt) Enter the passphrase: After entering the passphrase, the machine used several more minutes while the cpu cooler went into high pitch, then it emitted the following message: 10 logical volume(s) in volume group ev0 now active cryptsetup: md1_crypt set up successfully Then it took some more time, after which it emitted a flurry of messages, ending with this: /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (25598) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md1 (25599) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (25600) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md1 (25601) /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (25602) done. After that, booting continued normally. This was a scary event, all in all, and I'd also like to have the machine boot in 3 minutes, instead of some 15, again. If you think that this problem should be assigned to a different package (eg. linux-image-...), please feel free to re-assign, as well as up- or downgrading the severity. I think that the problem justifies marking it as 'important', but hesitated to mark it 'grave' because the machine eventually booted. Bug#594427: xdg-user-dirs: Update standard folders should add language links to folders, not rename them
Le jeudi 26 août 2010 à 00:07 +0200, Papou a écrit : Limiting this explanation to French and Desktop, what xdg-user-dirs is trying to do when the user changes his language from English to French (and agrees) is to rename Desktop to Bureau. For multiple reasons, see below, this is an impossible thing to do. Instead, all these reasons disappear if a Bureau - Desktop symbolic link is created. And, for the same reasons, that symbolic link must be kept should the user change his language away from French. The fix is simple: - instead of renaming Desktop to Bureau, create a Bureau - Desktop symbolic link - instead of renaming Bureau to any language, do nothing - the rest remains unchanged unfortunately, corrective action must be taken for already polluted systems: - corrective action, Desktop must be created and desktop data migrated to it by user Which makes the fix not simple. You should bring this issue upstream. There is no reason for Debian to diverge from upstream on such a large scale. Bug#574604: [tuxonice-userui] initramfs generated initrd misses tuxonice-userui
Hello, I'm agree with the proposed solution, the warning message can be wrong and confusing (telling it installs an initrd for a TuxOnIce-disabled kernel whereas it is actually enabled) and putting TuxOnIce's user UI things in initrd for TOI-disabled kernels is harmless (and people installing this package surely want to have this software in kernels which can use them). Bug#592546: kernel-package: doesn't run update-initramfs
I had the same issue when I was using custom kernels late last year. Simply installing the .deb that make-kpkg produces for some reason doesn't run update-initramfs, so there is no initrd and the kernel won't start. Workaround: 'sudo update-initramfs sudo update-grub' after installing the custom-built kernel. I never got around to reporting / properly investigating the problem, and I'm still suspecting it has something to do with hooks in /etc/kernel-img.conf or the like. It might be nice to put those from /usr/bin/* in xapian-tools-dbg, but that's more invasive and would mean a trip through the NEW queue, which both seem best avoided in the middle of a transition. The debug symbols for the library are much more widely useful. Cheers, Olly -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#594482: ITP: libsyntax-ruby -- A simple Ruby syntax highlighting library

It is a naive syntax analysis tool, meaning that it does not understand the syntaxes of the languages it processes, but merely does some semi-intelligent pattern matching. There are primarily two uses for the Syntax library: # Convert text from a supported syntax to a supported highlight format (like HTML). # Tokenize text in a supported syntax and process the tokens directly. While there already exist other Ruby syntax highlighting libraries in Debian, this one is a dependency of Cucumber, which I RFP'd (#565769) a while ago and will shortly be converted to an ITP, if not by me then by a colleague. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
