Bug#596907: installation-reports: mostly successful squeeze install from USB stick
Quoting Miles Fidelman (mfidel...@ntcorp.com): Thanks for your regular tests. They help a lot figuring out areas that still need work. Comments/Problems: - no opportunity to load custom installer modules - no opportunity to install grub legacy, installed grub2 ok successfully installed squeeze from a USB stick 1. The installer mostly does things on auto-pilot - no splash screen (so no opportunity to enter rescue mode), no opportunity to install optional components, The first time it stops for user input is after entering the partitioner. Next time is for tasksel. After that it goes all the way through installing grub before it stops. No language/country/keyboard/network questions? Loading custom modules is proposed only in expert mode. *That* is on purpose..:-) Rescue mode is to be chosen at boot time, by choosing a special entry in the boot menu. 2. It seems to install grub2, without giving the opportunity to install grub- legacy. It seems to do all the right things, and the installed system boots properly. I don't think we really want to still suppor tgrub-legavy during installation. Supporting grub2 has already been a suffisiant PITA..:-) signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#596762: installation-reports: installer failed to add winXP to grub2
(answering to the bug report and leaving your full answer so that it's recordedas your answer was only a private message to me) Quoting sdfsdfsdf ewfwdfsdf (spamfang1...@yahoo.de): I have used the snapshot from today (2010/09/14). 1. Grub2 still did not include my winXP partition to the menuentries. Please provide the full installation log (you'll find it in /var/log/debian-installer on the installed system). 2. The grub-question-loop (see above) did not happen again. BUT this may be due to the fact, that i had not the prior grub version installed anymore, but already grub2. Could you use a daily build of the installer? At this step of the squeeze development, we no longer recommend using alpha1 releases. GRUB issues, particularly, should be tested with latest releases. You can find daily builds from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. Please preferrably choose the *netboot* image (not netinst). Despite its name, it is not reserved for people who use network boot servers. It is indeed just an as minimal as possible image that downloads components off the network as soon as the network is up and running in D-I. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#556188: gforge-db-postgresql: Postgres configuration for pg_hba.conf ambiguous
found 556188 fusionforge/5.0.1+svn10155-1 thanks On Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 06:49:34AM +0100, Olivier Berger wrote: Hi. Upon installation of fusionforge 4.8.1 on testing, one is prompted (every time ?) with UCF about conflicting changes on /etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf : A new version of configuration file /etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf is available, but the version installed currently has been locally modified. This is really not intuitive and would need to be non-ambiguous. In the installation test I'm doing, the postgres installation is made as a dependency of it, so no prior configuration was made by the user. Then, pg_hba.conf is what it should be right after postgres-8.3 has installed it. So there has been no user configuration. The default option prompted by UCF is to keep the installed version, however, by looking at the diffs, it seems that the best thing to do might be to install the new version with additions made by gforge-db-postgresql's postinst. Is UCF used the right way ? Ain't it another way to deal with such cases when no one made any modifications and the postinst's version can be applied safely ? Thanks in advance. This still happens to me on a system where I have had to configure postgres beforehands. It looks like this ain't solved for squeeze still :-( Maybe this package deserves more love ? Bug#596933: apt-file: files provided by alternatives cannot be found
Package: apt-file Version: 2.1.5 Severity: normal Hi, apt-file is not able to find files provided by the alternative system. I understand that those files are not exactly a file in the package but the package is reponsible for the file being there and therefore apt-file should find it. I stumbled upon that when searching for packages that provide /usr/bin/mail. Both apt-file and packages.debian.org only find the package 'mailutils' but IIRC there are at least 3 other packages which provide it via the alternatives system, bsd-mailx for example. I was unsure of the priority of this bug. On the one hand i'd say it's a wish, on the other hand i think this tool is pretty useless if it's just going to ignore things like alternatives and who knows what else might come altogether and just displays a minor subset of relevant packages. Bug#596936: libmad: FTBFS on armhf (preliminary arch support)
Package: libmad Version: 0.15.1b-5 Severity: wishlist While building this package on the new armhf port -running on debian-ports atm- we encountered two bugs that were already discovered in Ubuntu for ARM: 1. use adr instead of add to make code ready for thumb2 (LP: #513734) 2. Provide-Thumb-2-alternative-code-for-MAD_F_MLN.diff: fix another ftbfs with thumb2 as rsc doesnt exist anymore - thanks to Dave Martin for this patch (LP: #534287) The reason it wasn't discovered on armel or arm is that armhf by design uses thumb2 by default for size/speed reasons which led to a number of similar bugs found across some packages. I've gathered both into a patch which I would appreciate if you would apply to the current libmad version in order to have it build properly on armhf. Bug#592622: bacula: 5.0.3 is upstream available
Hi, is there any chance that bacula 5.0.3 will go into testing while squeeze is frozen? I'm on lenny and use lenny-backports for bacula, AFAIK there will be no 5.0.3 backport until it's in testing. 5.0.3 has some important bug fixes and might be the last 5.0.x version, it'd be greate to have it in squeeze and lenny-backports. Bug#596901: xserver-xorg-video-intel: no cursor in X

And it's another issue related to i855. I've reported to the kernel because rebooting with 2.6.35-rc6, 2.6.34 and older ones, it works. But also xserver-xorg-video-intel is a good candidate to this problem. The missing cursor bug has a fix for .36, afaik. It's unrelated to this one. Bug#596939: future unblock: kdepim-runtime/4:4.4.6-1
Package: release.debian.org Severity: wishlist User: release.debian@packages.debian.org Usertags: freeze-exception Hello, I would like to hear your opinion before uploading. KDE has recently released a new patch release (4.4.6) for its kdepim suite 4.4.x series (kdepim-runtime and kdepim source packages in Debian). KDE has a rather strict policy what goes into its patch releases (no new features, only bug fixes). So I think it makes much sense to release Squeeze with the latest bugfix version from upstream because a few months of bug fixing went into kdepim* 4.4.6. Also please note that 4.4.6 is probably the last release of the old kdepim* codebase while upstream is actively working on the kdepim* 4.5 which is 70% rewrite so to speak. In my opinion, this makes the update even more important given the length of the Debian stable lifecycle. Speaking strictly about kdepim-runtime source package, the upstream diff is really small (see below). So would you grant a freeze exception for this package after it spends some time in unstable? Bug#596924: orion5x kernel 2.6.32-21 fails to detect network link on Linkstation Pro
* Ryan Tandy tarp...@gmail.com [2010-09-14 21:19]: Today I performed a network-console install of Squeeze on my Linkstation Pro, using a recent d-i from p.d.o/~joeyh. The installation completed successfully. Afterwards the system appeared to boot, but did not respond to ping. I attached the hard drive to another machine and discovered from the saved dmesg that the network device never entered the link up state. This appears to be a regression in 2.6.32-21 since the 2.6.32-20 kernel included in the installer works correctly. Can you connect a serial console to see what's going on? Can you try 2.6.32-20 from http://snapshot.debian.org/ to see if that works? I don't see any network related changes between -20 and -21. -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. On the other hand, changes of this value in the release file are barley noticeable for a normal user but could make a big difference as 101 will always be preferred over 100… Beside, we have not many other special case values: 500 is the default anyway, 990 is the default release and an archive can't know if it is a default release for a user or not and above 1000 isn't a good value for an archive ever… In combination with this (or in place of this) the pin should also be settable in sources.list: deb [pin=100] http://backports.debian.org/debian squeeze main Thats what Julian said and i referred to in my ps. Bug#596944: please reconsider xscreensaver *-extra package split
Package: xscreensaver Version: 5.05-3 In summary: The Debian package of xscreensaver currently excludes many savers from the default install, on the basis of them using too much CPU. This is no longer the case. As those savers no longer use too much CPU, the justification for excluding them from the default install no longer exists, and they should be installed by default. Longer version: Currently, Debian divides xscreensaver into five packages: xscreensaver (base) xscreensaver-data (non-OpenGL screen savers, part 1) xscreensaver-data-extra (non-OpenGL screen savers, part 2) xscreensaver-gl (OpenGL screen savers, part 1) xscreensaver-gl-extra (OpenGL screen savers, part 2) The choice of which savers to put in the part 2 packages instead of the part 1 packages was made by Jose Luis Rivas Contreras ghostba...@gmail.com and Tormod Volden debian.tor...@gmail.com back in 2007 or 2008 by running each of the screen savers and timing their CPU usage, and putting those with high CPU usage in the part 2 packages, not installed by default. I believe these are the tests they ran, years ago: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Screensavers It has always been my goal with xscreensaver that *no* screen saver should use significant CPU when running. Since he ran his tests, I have fixed those savers that were using too much CPU (mostly by adjusting their default settings to be gentler). It is my belief that currently, none of the screen savers included with xscreensaver use significant CPU when running with their default options. Therefore, it is my belief that the -extra packages are unnecessary, and their contents should be folded in to the -data and -gl packages, reducing the number of xscreensaver packages from 5 to 3. I would like this to happen so that the default is to install the *complete* xscreensaver package instead of just an arbitrary subset of it. Since most users will just take the defaults, they won't even know that the part 2 savers exist, and many of them are pretty cool! And the justification for excluding them no longer exists. Over the past 3 years, I have repeatedly asked Jose to re-run the tests he ran by which he decided which savers to push into the extras package, and let me know if he still sees any savers using excessive CPU (because I don't believe there are any, but if there are, I would like to fix that bug.) I'm sorry to say that he has never responded. In fact, I haven't gotten any mail from him at all since September 2008, so even though he is still listed as the Debian maintainer of xscreensaver, I'm not sure he is still paying attention. So -- if there is anyone reading this who considers themselves to be in charge of the Debian xscreensaver package, please reconsider the split between the default and extras packages, because I believe it to be based on old data and on assumptions which are no longer true. So we might have to choose if we want logins that can take 20 minutes with large groups or incomplete group settings for logged in users. For roaming laptops without NFS mounts the incomplete groups is not a serious problem. For machines that use NFS, it is. The config had enumeration turned off. Bug#541388: Xmodmap loss
Russell Adams writes (Bug#541388: Xmodmap loss): I too am having this issue. Is there a workaround? I recently had a similar symptoms. I have reported mine in #596775 since I wasn't sure the causes were the same. Also related are probably: #568868 key repeat for caps lock goes away after suspend/resume #582566 bell settings (xset -b) not preserved after suspend/resume In my system I was able to make the problem go away by arranging for the kernel driver for my mouse not to be unloaded across suspend/hibernate. As a workaround, why not hook into the hibernation/suspend machinery and have it unconditionally restore your mappings ? That would automate your current manual workaround of running xmodmap after each resume. Ian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#595448: glob2: Crash during tutorial part 4 (src/Game.cpp Assertion `building' failed)
Hi! In any way all these reports seem to indicate to me the game should not be shipped in a stable release. It's also currently marked as beta by upstream. During the game, playing part 4 of the tutorial Flags and Completion, when attacking the enemy buildings I get this crash: glob2: src/Game.cpp:2201: void Game::drawMapGroundBuildings(int, int, int, int, int, int, int, int, int, Uint32, std::setBuilding*, std::lessBuilding*, std::allocatorBuilding* *): Assertion `building' failed. Since the program is aborted and you can't save the game, unless you were fortunate enough to save the game you loose the level and have to start over again. I guess it might be too late, in case you've played again, but if you still have around the autosave for that session in ~/.glob2, it would be helpful for the upstream developers if you attached the entire directory as a tar.gz archive, for them to be able to reproduce and diagnose the problem. regards, guillem -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#596954: bastille adds dpkg-statoverride entries that change permissions to 0000 after upgrade
Package: bastille Version: 1:3.0.9-12.1 Severity: serious Hello, I run the stable release of debian, i.e. lenny (debian 5.0.6). I wanted to harden my system using bastille, so I installed the current bastille package from unstable, that supports also debian 5.0 (lenny). The package from stable supports only debian releases up to 4.0 (etch). I used bastille to tighten up the permissions of some system binaries and bastille set the most permissions to 750 to prevent unprivileged users to use the administration utilities or removed the suid flag, so that the binaries cannot be used by non-root users (from ping and mount, for instance). After that bastille ran also the dpkg-statoverride command to prevent resetting the permissions on system upgrades. However, this part fails and bastille sets the override permissions to !!! This means that many of the administration utilitites have their permissions set to after upgrade and cannot be used anymore (even by root)! This happened to me in last upgrade to debian version 5.0.6 with ping, for instance: ls -l /bin/ping* -- 1 root root 30788 Jul 27 04:34 /bin/ping -- 1 root root 26616 Jul 27 04:34 /bin/ping6 This is serious because many important binaries are included, for instance init, mkfs, mount, apt-get etc. It is also difficult to find out the reason, because the upgrade can happen much longer than the bastille hardening process. I'm including a part of the bastille action log for /sbin/init, for instance: ... {Tue Jun 8 20:00:01 2010} ACTION File exists, running chmod 488 /sbin/init{Tue Jun 8 20:00:01 2010} ACTION change permissions on /sbin/init from 100755 to 750 {Tue Jun 8 20:00:01 2010} ACTION chmod 750,/sbin/init; {Tue Jun 8 20:00:01 2010} ACTION Setting permissions with dpkg-statoverride:/usr/sbin/dpkg-statoverride --force --add #0 #0 /sbin/init ... Hopefully, this can be repaired quite quickly in ustable, because this can make the system partly unusable without knowing about this problem.
