Bug#679729: [amarok] amarok crashes for unknown reason
Package: amarok Version: 2.5.0-3 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Hello, amarok just crashed, while i was listening to some podcast. I did nothing special, so it is hard for me to reproduce the error in a way other than by restarting amarok and waiting. Strangely (but luckily) i could generate some information about the crash (see below) although i do not have the package amarok-dbg installed. Hope it helps. i will also install the package amarok-dbg to be able to commit further information if it crashes again. Regards and thank you for developing and/or maintaining my favorite audio player Lorenz Application: Amarok (amarok), signal: Segmentation fault Using host libthread_db library /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1. Bug#540406: Closing the bug
reopen 540406 thanks Anton Gladky gladky.an...@gmail.com writes: there was no meaningful answer to the moreinfo mail. Unfortunately, I didn't receive a copy. (I'm unsure if Debian's netiquette says anything about Cc: to bugno-submit...@bugs.debian.org, but I'd appreciate a copy anyway.) That is why I'm closing the bug. Please, feel free to reopen it if you think the bug is still there, or fill a new bug. The issue I was reporting (quoted below) is indeed still there. The ‘x11’ and ‘wxt’ drivers are quite distinct, and one may opt to install one of them but not other, which is clearly impossible when they belong to the same package. The problem is that the gnuplot-x11 package offers both the ‘x11’ and ‘wxt’ packages, and thus has all the dependencies for both. In some circumstances, I'd like to avoid dependencies on GTK and Pango, which are brought by the wxWidgets-based driver. Isn't it possible to build a single /usr/bin/gnuplot binary with all the relevant support for all the graphical interactive terminals supported by Debian, and then provide the necessary lib/gnuplot/ driver binaries in three separate packages (gnuplot-x11, gnuplot-wxt, gnuplot-qt)? It would also make the descriptions of the binary packages less confusing, cf. Christoph Bersch: I think the current configuration can also confuse users, because the names suggest, that only X11 and qt are supported as interactive terminals: TIA. -- FSF associate member #7257 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#638068: initramfs-tools generates unbootable initrd.img on IA-64
I've committed a fix for #638068 to git. It doesn't address the fact that klibc/sh appears to not be good enough to boot ia64 (which is an entirely different and, I assume, klibc bug), but it should improve the handling enough to make it at least do as requested for both BUSYBOX=y and BUSYBOX=n (which should fix ia64, as long as you use =y) Can someone test out git head and let me know if this works for you. It looks obviously correct to me, but I can't readily test it to make sure it DTRT. ... Adam -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. The fix will lead to a nasty error message though, namely rmdir: failed to remove `/lib/init/rw': No such file or directory. Bug#540406: the wxt driver deserves its own package
Anton Gladky gladky.an...@gmail.com writes: 2012/7/1 Ivan Shmakov oneing...@gmail.com: Isn't it possible to build a single /usr/bin/gnuplot binary with all the relevant support for all the graphical interactive terminals supported by Debian, and then provide the necessary lib/gnuplot/ driver binaries in three separate packages (gnuplot-x11, gnuplot-wxt, gnuplot-qt)? I do not think so. As I've just checked, while the ‘x11’ and ‘qt’ drivers are provided as external binaries (under lib/gnuplot/), the ‘wxt’ one is apparently compiled into the main gnuplot binary itself. If I'm right in my guess that the library dependencies of the latter on the Qt libraries are superfluous (I hope to check it the next week), then that may be one more reason to keep the ‘wxt’ driver separate. Should my assumptions be right, I'd suggest the binary packages to be as follows: gnuplot provides /usr/bin/gnuplot compiled /with/ wxWidgets; gnuplot-nox (or gnuplot-nowx?) provides /usr/bin/gnuplot compiled /without/ wxWidgets; gnuplot-x11 provides gnuplot_x11 only; Depends: gnuplot | gnuplot-nox; gnuplot-qt provides gnuplot_qt only; Depends: gnuplot | gnuplot-nox. Also, the layout above could reduce the package sizes somewhat, as there would only be two (instead of three) packages holding all the share/ stuff. Alternatively, share/ could be split off to a single gnuplot-common instead. We have now: gnuplot-nox, gnuplot-x11 and gnuplot-qt. Such structure is clear and no need to add one more gnuplot-wxt. That is my point of view. First of all, I do not contest the clarity. Second, the present state of affairs is that the user isn't allowed to install the ‘x11’ driver without also installing libwxgtk2.8-0, like: # apt-get install -V -- gnuplot-x11 libwxgtk2.8-0- Reading package lists... Building dependency tree... Reading state information... Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: gnuplot-x11 : Depends: libwxgtk2.8-0 (= 2.8.12.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. # While I believe that the ‘x11’ driver /per se/ is (still) perfectly usable without wxWidgets. -- FSF associate member #7257 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#679733: perl-depends: package description review
Package: perl-depends Version: 2011.0324+git74d587e-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch I noticed this package has two minor typos close together in its description. Reading the rest I see the content is basically fine, but there are a few other minor language issues, so here's a general rewrite. Description: roughly find out module depends from a perl file Informative, but it's a verb phrase; DevRef recommends that packages should have noun-phrase-based synopses. Also, depends from is unidiomatic (except perhaps as Debian jargon), and Perl should be capitalised (unless it's talking about /usr/bin/perl). Find out roughly the modules the program uses. This is based on the This is another verb-phrase based sentence fragment; here it should be a full sentence (perl-depends is a tool for...). I'll keep this second use of roughly, but the third one at the end of the paragraph is just too repetitive. idea, that Perl evaluates the use commands at compile time and ^ ~~~ Un-English use of comma; but the This is based on the idea that part is superfluous (and isn't in your upstream blurb anyway). Also, unidiomatic use of definite article. stores the loaded module information into the %INC variable. By Loaded module information is a bit ambiguous; say information about loaded modules. Store takes in, not into. examining the loaded modules and comparing them against the standard Perl modules, the extenal module dpendencies can be roughly estimated. ^^ ^^ Two typos and an excess roughly. There's no need for this use of the passive voice (with a by phrase that doesn't mark the agent); it can just say comparing X and Y gives an estimate of Z. . The depends information can be used to determine what external modules Another unidiomatic use of depends where I think it means dependency. have to be installed before program can be used. ^ Missing article. Hi Vincent (2012.06.29_21:38:36_+0200) Or copy pip/distribute/setuptools from the system? Or link it? Not that simple. pip is currently installed with easy_install, installing it from the installed version on the system would require manually installing all the necessary files, and re-writing the shebang. Package: gnutls28 Version: 3.0.19-2 GnuTLS 3.0.19 has a bug which causes a TLS handshake failure if a handshake packet needs to be fragmented (if a packet is larger than 16 kB). This bug is fixed in 3.0.20 which is available in Debian sid. I am filing this bug report because I think this bug should be fixed in debian wheezy release (it has currently 3.0.19). The Debian package ca-certificates includes so many CA certificates that if used together with GnuTLS 3.0.19 with all CA's enabled (the default), it will always produce a failed TLS handshake. The error message is: Fatal error: A TLS packet with unexpected length was received. Bug#679073: texlive-base: failed during dist-upgrade (/usr/bin/fmtutil: Segmentation fault)
Hello, I tried to install v2012.20120628-1 but dependencies forces to many other packages to be changed to 'unstable' and I cannot do that. Therefore I decided to upgrade texlive-base(2009) using 'testing' which upgrades also luatex tex-common texlive-base texlive-binaries texlive-common texlive-doc-base (and some others) to 2012.20120516. Package: 389-ds-base-dev Version: 389-ds-base-dev/1.2.11.7-1 Severity: serious The hard-coded dependency on lidb4.8 is wrong, since there is no lidb4.8 package in the archive, and now your package depends on lidb4.8 and libdb5.1. Bug#679746: default --system home directory leads to piuparts RC bugs
Package: adduser Version: 3.113+nmu3 Severity: serious Hi, I am really sorry having to file this. When a package uses adduser --system without explicitly specifying the home directory of the new user, its home directory gets set to /home/$USER. Debian QA thinks that this is a policy violation and supports this by bending FHS http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/fhs/fhs-2.3.html#HOMEUSERHOMEDIRECTORIES which says: /home : User home directories (optional) /home is a fairly standard concept, but it is clearly a site-specific filesystem. The setup will differ from host to host. Therefore, no program should rely on this location. Thus, packages using adduser --system and relying on adduser doing the right thing will get a piuparts-based RC bug in no time. Adduser should change its default behavior to something that QA will accept. Greetings Marc -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. This logic is common to many packages. That's a bug in a lot of packages, yes. adduser has been designed to allow adduser --system to be called without that logic: If called with one non-option argument and the --system option, adduser will add a system user. If a user with the same name already exists in the system uid range (or, if the uid is specified, if a user with that uid already exists), adduser will exit with a warning. This warning can be suppressed by adding --quiet. So, just remove the extra getent passwd check and you should be fine. Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. Yes, that would be the way to go for adduser --system However, most postinsts wrap the call to adduser with a check for whether the account already exists, so it would not be called without an update to every preinst employing this strategy. Yes, packages having used that approached are buggy in the first place. It would also alter the existing behaviour of adduser, which is to return nonzero if the user already exists, which could cause breakage. NACK, adduser --system does return zero if the user already exists and its parameters are sufficiently similiar to the parameters requested by the maintainer script. I dislike the fact that the behaviour of adduser and deluser would, in effect, /not/ add or delete users as intended, which is rather counter-intuitive. Providing that we have consensus on a recommended strategy for locking and unlocking accounts which can go into policy, I think all we need are examples for how maintainer scripts are expected to handle account creation and locking/unlocking. NACK, don't put the same logic into a hundred maintainer scripts where they'll have two hundred different bugs. Put the logic into a central place where bugs can be handled centrally. It is a wrapper around usermod -L -e 1 foo. * Similarly, adduser needs to be changed to unlock: usermod -U -e '' foo. Why not extending deluser to not delete the user if it is a system account? When you remove and reinstall, you should be exactly where you were before. * Is there consensus that adduser should get a --local option, and if so, what should its semantics be, and should packages start using it now? Or can this wait until there's an actual need for --local, so that the precise semantics can be defined? There's a fairly few packages that create users, so we should be able to deal with them fairly easily later. Actually --system was meant for that. Bug#621833: System user handling in packages: status of discussion
On Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 11:00:14AM +0100, Roger Leigh wrote: Would lockuser need to be in the adduser package? Given that adduser is only priority:important, it's not guaranteed to be present when postrm is run, so the operation could fail. Maybe passwd is a better place for it, given that it contains useradd etc., and is priority:required. adduser should be elevated to priority:required then. adduser contains all Debian logic for account handling, while passwd doesn't. adduser is the logical place for Debianisms. Bug#679751: please clarify package account and home directory location in policy
Package: debian-policy Severity: normal Hi, many packages have to create system accounts on installation. Unfortunately, Debian policy is not quite clear on how to handle these. On the other hand, Debian QA is keen on addressing issues in account handling, which frequently leads to discussions about how to handle things like that, resulting in maintainer time being wasted to make unncessary changes to a package that could have been done right in the first place. #621833 has a lengthy discussion about what happens to an account on package removal / purge, but other things are stil open and unaddressed by Policy. I won't address the old user name (package versus Dpackage versus Debian-package versus debian-package) issue here since the discussions about that have died down in the last years and one gets away pretty well with Debian-package. But I need to address the where to put a users' home dir issue. Recently, QA has filed quite some bugs about system users' home dirs not being allowed in /home, (mis)interpreting the FHS (chapter /home) at this point, saying /home : User home directories (optional) /home is a fairly standard concept, but it is clearly a site-specific filesystem. [9] The setup will differ from host to host. Therefore, no program should rely on this location. Unfortunately, Policy is not clear on where a system accounts' home directory is to be placed. Thus, a maintainer trying to fix the bug that a home directory was placed *gasp* in /home is risking to do it wrong again when choosing between /etc/package(/home) and /var/(lib|cache|spool)/package(/home). In quite a few packages, the system user's home directory might accumulate dotfiles and/or ssh (keys|known_hosts) files, so this decision is not quite easy to take. I would love to have policy clearly say where a system users' home directory is to be placed. This saves a lot of maintainer time and grief with QA actions. If this were clearly laid out in Policy, QA would also be saved from discussions with grumpy maintainers like me, since they would have a clear reference to cite without having to bend FHS. Sorry, but I cannot suggest Policy language since I don't know how do to things right and I still believe that /home is a valid place for home directories. Bug#679492: [spamassassin] Dependency boot ordering and running sa_update

I had been doing this in rc.local as well. Should be a more correct/Debian way. If you choose to run sa-update before starting spamd, that's fine, and not a bad idea if your host reboots frequently. Since sa-update potentially takes some time (especially if sa-compile is used), running it on every reboot could have an undesirable impact on boot time. Additionally, since spamd is typically run on mail servers, which don't reboot frequently, I believe this change would be of minimal benefit to most users. This might be reclassified a security issue! Since sa-update is optional and is never run automatically by default, you'll have a hard time convincing me that not running it at boot time is a security issue. I don't plan on making the requested change. However, if somebody provides a patch to implement it, I'd consider applying it. noah I see the point. Might better be a configuration option, possibly cron-job. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#678443: Hard lockups due to lockup-detector (NMIs) on multi-Pentium-3 SMP systems on all kernel builds since 2.6.38
Hello, currently the system starts reaching an amount of uptime that was hardly possible before setting nowatchdog: netfinity5000:~# uptime 13:43:12 up 10 days, 20:43, 2 users, load average: 0,01, 0,08, 0,07 When we reach 14 days or more, we know that it's really the watchdog/NMI feature causing these SMP systems to lock up intermittently but quite deterministic after an uptime of 1 to 8 days. To avoid any side-effects while testing, I did not change anything on the system except this kernel boot parameter after the last lockup those 10 days ago. No software updates, no additional change to the kernel (this means the current kernel produced at least one successful lockup as I had tried various configurations and versions before the hint to the NMI/watchdog issue gained my full attention). After having me frustrated for months, I have quite a detailed impression of this misbehaviour and nothing ever made me feel that confident in restored reliability than setting this boot parameter. Thanks for the quick reply. Though this is turning into a bit of a problem for me. Context: my company (http://www.microlinux.fr) provides 100 % GNU/Linux and FOSS solutions for professional users like small town halls, public libraries, private schools, small and medium companies, etc. All the solutions - server as well as desktop - are Debian-based, e. g. stable with a handful of backports. So far, this is the first really annoying bug, since the secretary of a private school where I installed it pointed it out to me, and I couldn't help her out. Right now I'm giving Libre Office from backports a spin, but the last time I checked it out - 3.4.something on Slackware, I was mostly impressed by the myriad of bugs.
