Bug#1026391: SMU binary missing from AMD firmware update

2022-12-19 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Package: firmware-amd-graphics
Version: 20221214-1
Severity: important

Despite
https://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-nonfree_20221214-1_changelog
mentioning "amdgpu: add SMU 13.0.0 firmware for amd-5.4"
and the andgpu/smu_13_0_0.bin file being available in the upstream
release, the corresponding file /lib/firmware/amdgpu/smu_13_0_0.bin is
not part of
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-amd-graphics_20221214-1_all.deb

This causes boot failures for Debian sid users with AMD Radeon RX 7900
XT(X) video cards. As mentioned in
https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/zp7qyw/amd_radeon_rx_7900_xt_xtx_should_it_work_now_on/

Bug#937288: piggyphoto: Python2 removal in sid/bullseye

Agreed. It was packaged as a reverse dependency for other software,
but other problems eventually prevented the packaging of that.

Bug#876752: Workaround

2017-10-09 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
While the CLang migration is still ongoing the workaround would be to
install libllvm5.0:i386=1:5.0~+rc2-1 libllvm5.0=1:5.0~+rc2-1 from testing.
This then allows to install the other packages needed to get GL
acceleration working in both 64bit and 32bit applications (like
libgl1-mesa-dri:i386).

Bug#800327: Permission issue with GDM and NVidia

2015-09-28 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
I can confirm that the issue rescribed in bug #800327 is real and the
workaround of adding Debian-gdm user to the video group works. The
logs in this case look like this in /var/log/messages :

Sep 28 22:29:13 home gnome-session[1440]: X Error of failed request:

However, after reviewing my upgrade log, there was no GDM upgrade, but
there was a new kernel version (4.1 to 4.2.1-2) and a new NVidia
driver version (340.93-1 to 340.39-2). Could this bug be instead in
NVidia driver package instead?

Actually easy_install also installs run scripts from Python eggs (if
there are any) and those get installed into /usr/local/bin by default.

contributors are more interested in working on a new version and not
on fixing old bugs many of which are non-trivial to fix without
significant refactoring of existing code.

Bug#427697: Is sbackup maintained? If not, what to do?

2008-05-15 Thread Aigars Mahinovs

The upstream situation is not as clear cut - I've been making every
effort to a new and enthusiastic developer (Ouattara Oumar Aziz) take
over the upstream development of SBackup peacefully. I must say that
this process along with a partial rewrite of the software that Aziz
started even earlier might have turned out a bit more complex than he
expected. I on my part did not follow up on the fate of the upstream
development as much as I should have.

If you find this package important for you or your users and have some
time to provide a NMU, I would welcome that with open hands. Meanwhile
I am discussing the future of the SBackup software with Aziz and it
should see a revitalization that is rather common among free software
towards the summer.

Note: there have been a couple private emails on the same subject that
I have not answered yet, because the situation is not 100% certain,
but all patches, bug reports and translations will be acted upon
eventually. Help is welcome however.

Bug#431632:

2007-07-03 Thread Aigars Mahinovs

Note: it might also very well be that I misunderstood the arhitecture
of the relationship completely there and just failed to configure my
system correctly, but the this is that after 5 hours of trying to
solve this problem, this bug is the most logical conclusion that I
could come up with.

The end symptom of my situation is that with mod_dbd and mod_authn_dbd
enabled, after I copieted verbating the example code from
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authn_dbd.html

I do not see Apache2 connecting to the PGSQL server and only see in
apache logs this error:

[Wed Jul 04 01:51:07 2007] [crit] (70023)This function has not been
implemented on this platform: DBD: driver for [DBDriver unset] not
available
[Wed Jul 04 01:51:07 2007] [crit] (70023)This function has not been
implemented on this platform: DBD: failed to initialise

Googling was not very helpful except a passing comment stating that if
the DBDriver is unset that means that no apr_dbd_*.so modules are
found on the system. Further search led to the discovery that such
modules should/could come out of apr-utils package and there are no
such things in the resulting .deb.

Bug#431632: DBD sub-modules not included in Apache2's APR packages

2007-07-03 Thread Aigars Mahinovs

Package: libaprutil1
Version: 1.7.2+dfsg-2
Severity: major

apr-util package builds, but fails to include in the .deb's anything
from the dbd/ subdirectory of the sources thus rendering DBD modue of
Apach2 completely useless as that subdirectory contains SQLite and
PGSQL backend drivers.

In order for Apache2 to authenticate a user to an SQL database,
authn-dbd module is used. It depends on dbd module which in turn
depends on apr-util in its connectivity to databases. The source
package of apr-util contains the dbd/ subdirectory with sqlite and
postgresql drivers and also declares a build-dependency that allows
these drivers to be built. BUT the built files never make it to the
.deb packages produced by this source.

Please amend that packaging to include these drivers. I believe such
packaging bug is important enough to warrant an update of package in
etch as well.

I see, does this only happen with xscreensaver or does gnome-screensaver
(the default in GNOME) give you the same behaviour?

The bug exists in both configurations. Easy to check on a laptop:
* make screen locking to activate on lid close
* activate "take a break" feature
* work until the "take a brake" starts
* close the lid
* wait enough time for "take a brake" to finish
* open the lid
* observe all the desktop visible, but keyboard and mouse still disabled
* close the lid and open it again, observe the typical lock screen
* enter password and all works again.

100% repeatable.

You want the spin button at the lower right corner of the toolbar. "-1" means
the default audio stream.

Shouldn't this be in the Audio menu to be somewhat discoverable?

Same bug here with metacity in Gnome - when fullscreen mode is

not nice as, for example I would want to have a movie playing

Bug#333945: Plan backup cycle and manage storage media

2005-11-30 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
On 10/14/05, Ian Jackson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
> Organising backups is a challenging and critical task which should not
> be left to the naive user.

My idea currently is to do backups to local filesystem and then have a
configurable interval after which a dialog would pop up telling user
that it would be wise to copy a backup to a removable media right
about now. If user agrees, then a programm is to be started that would
make a good guess about what exactly should be copied (last full
snapshot + incremental snapshots since then, but sometimes making a
new full snapshot would be better), detect what removable media
options are available in this particular system and provide user with
the choices. Total size of copieable data would be displayed and
number of discs for CD/DVD backup will be estimated (pessimistically
:)). The user would be asked to mark the backup media with the name of
the snapshot - basically a timestamp, posibly shortened to "mmdd"
and "nn/tt" for indication of number of current media and the total
number of media in the snapshot. Verification of written data should
also be done.

I do not intend of storing any information of any past backups in the
system outside the actual directories of said backup snapshots. I
think that it is only worth showing a backup if we actually have it.

Lets consider a typical user: he backups his home folder to
/var/backup daily to be safe against accidental deletition or
corruption of his data and once a mounth writes a backup snapshot to
DVD-RW for the case of the hard drive crash. What would be the use
case where such user would need a system database of all backups? Is
there any other use case where that would be nessesary? I can only
think of one - if you regularely copy incremental backups to CDs and
want to find out in which backup last version of a particular file is
found. That is a valid use case, but I do not see this use scenario to
be important enough to impose all the costs of system backup database
management.

Bug#333933: Backup media

2005-11-20 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Currently one can do a backup to a remote server over ssh or ftp, but
there is also a plan for backup media support. The easiest way is to
make a separate tool that would allow to write a backup snapshot to
one or more CDs/DVDs/USB drives maybe even tapes and restore a
snapshot from such media.

The current ideology of the system is that backups are automatical and
independant from user input. Direct backups to removable media would
endanger the regularity of backups especially for less responsible
users. I think that backuping to a local drive (if that is a
standalone mashine) and then blinking an icon at user to make him move
the backup snapshot to removable media when he has the time, is a bit
more efficient.

I am not even talking about situations when reading a lot of small
files can break burning of the backup CD (if we try to go for direct
backups to CDs).

I plan to have the CD tool included in 1.0 tree and extended by the
backup applet in 2.0 rewrite of sbackup. You can even peek at .glade
file of the CD tool in the source of sbackup.

Bug#333942: Backup entry point

2005-11-20 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
I do not expect this interface to change - the SBackup paradigm is
that backups "just happen" once they are configured.

In 2.0 however I plan to have another entry point - a backup applet.
This applet could display a descriptive warning icon if backup is not
configured and asking user to click on it to launch the configurator.
Afterwards this icon would also be used to show progress of backup
runs, launching manual backup runs, launching restore and launching
backup to CD. The applet would also remind the user if he should
backup a backup snapshot to removable media and hasn't done so in some
time (a week, for example).

BTW: Thank you very much for your feedback, it helps a lot while
planning future features.

Bug#331374: amarok: autoscroll lyrics

2005-10-02 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Package: amarok
Version: 1.3.2-1
Severity: wishlist

It would be very usefull if the lyrics that are longer then one screen would
scroll automatically as the song progresses. I suppose that a smooth
proportional
scroll with a large safety margin whould work most of the time.
The length of song and of the lyrics would have to be calculated and then it
should be attemted to scroll the window in a such way that the guessed
'current'
position in lyrics would be in the middle of the window. That wold give a good
safety margin.
Of course this should be an option and one should be able to stop autoscroll
by simply scrolling a bit manually and restart autoscroll by reloading the page.

Well, first of all you should not be trying to backup /proc or /sys
and probably shouldn't backup /dev, especially if it is managed by
udev or devfs.
There should be a warning against that.

The second bug is that sbackupd get an error because it is trying to
get info of a file from a directory that has just been erased - a race
condition.

Thanks, I have not considered this effect. The primary target was
Ubuntu where this bug does not apply. But essentially the gksudo
should have reverted to su-ing to root if sudo was not configured for
a user. I will file a wishlist bug on gksudo for that matter, but I am
not quite sure how to handle this situation now.

I *could* try to write a shellscript that would detect if a user has
sudo access and call gksu if he doesn't, but that would be quite an
ugly hack. That should really be in gksudo.

Bug#321773: gnome-applets: "take a break" conflicts with xscreensaver lock mode

2005-08-07 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Package: gnome-applets
Severity: normal

Note: this applies to all versions where "Take a break" applet is
included, but only Ubuntu default ACPI configuration triggers the bug
by default.

When "Take a break" is activated (locking the keyboard and screen
after a set amount of activity), if the user (on a notebook) closes
the notebooks lid, ACPI scripts start up an instance of xscreensaver
in lock mode.
After the time of the schedulet break runs out, the gnome applet
unlocks the keyboard and screen messing up the xscreensavers setup.
xscreensaver still thinks that it is in locked mode and disables lots
of keys (including Alt-Tab and others), but the screen is not blanked
and the keyboard input goes to the first application on the screen.

Workaround is to call "xscreensaver-command -activate" and then unlock
it as usual.

Solution should be made in the "Take a break" applet - if the
xscreensaver thinks that it is active, when the break runs our, then
reactivate xscreensaver after unlocking the screen.

Bug#305715: Please provide default setting for popular services

2005-04-21 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Package: blogtk
Version: 1.0-1.1
Severity: wishlist

It is hard to start using blogtk if you are a common user that only knows
the name of their blog service, username and password. Thus it would be very
productive to provide preset URL and type for most popular series.
After that a 'Custom' option could be presented that is identical to current
interface. You can see this done in gnome-blog.
