Bug#933612: xfce4: Xfce fails to launch any application ("exo-helper-1: not found")
Package: xfce4 Version: 4.12.5 Severity: important Hello, since a recent update Xfce is unable to open any items clicked on in the desktop or through the panel launchers (anything that checks tfor "preferred application", I imagine). Launching the apps directly through the "Start Menu" works normally, as usual. The actual error message is something similar to this, as seen on #892010: /usr/bin/exo-preferred-applications: 11: exec: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/exo-1/exo-helper-1: not found I have managed to work around this issue by making a link between: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/exo-2/exo-helper-2 Which exists in my system and: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/exo-1/exo-helper-1 However this is clearly not ideal unless both commands are fully equivalent. I have marked this bug as important since being able to launch applications is indeed a big deal and more casual users may be incapacitated from using their systems in the offchance this would ever go to a stable release. This Ask Ubuntu post reports the same issue for Ubuntu 19.04: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1136194/xfce-can-not-start-preferred-applications-under-ubuntu-19-04/ The following relevant packages are installed and up-to-date in my system: exo-utils/testing,now 0.12.6-1 amd64 [installed, automatic] libexo-1-0/testing,now 0.12.6-1 amd64 [installed, automatic] libexo-2-0/testing,now 0.12.6-1 amd64 [installed, automatic] libexo-common/testing,testing,now 0.12.6-1 all [installed, automatic] libexo-helpers/testing,testing,now 0.12.6-1 all [installed, automatic] Thanks a lot to everyone working to make Xfce on Debian an excellent desktop environment! -- System Information: Debian Release: bullseye/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.19.0-5-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE, TAINT_WARN, TAINT_OOT_MODULE, TAINT_UNSIGNED_MODULE Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_US:en (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages xfce4 depends on: ii gtk2-engines-xfce3.2.0-4 ii libxfce4ui-utils 4.12.1-3 ii thunar 1.8.7-1 ii xfce4-appfinder 4.12.0-2+b1 ii xfce4-panel 4.12.2-1 ii xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin 0.4.1-1 ii xfce4-session4.12.1-6 ii xfce4-settings 4.12.4-1 ii xfconf 4.12.1-1+b1 ii xfdesktop4 4.12.4-2 ii xfwm44.12.5-1 Versions of packages xfce4 recommends: ii desktop-base 10.0.3 ii tango-icon-theme 0.8.90-7 ii thunar-volman 0.9.1-1 ii xfce4-notifyd 0.4.4-1 ii xorg 1:7.7+19 Versions of packages xfce4 suggests: pn gtk3-engines-xfce pn xfce4-goodies pn xfce4-power-manager -- no debconf information
Bug#922472: gnome-menus-blacklist: not found
Package: gnome-menus Version: 3.31.4-3 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, Upon trying to install the latest Discord .deb package, I have come across this issue. Exploring the contents of the Discord .deb file, I could find nothing related to gnome-menus in particular so I'm assuming the problem is in the gnome-menus package and not deriving from installing a third-party .deb. As a workaround, I deleted my gnome-menus package, installed the Discord .deb and then reinstalled gnome-menus (which is required by menulibre, otherwise I'd just leave it uninstalled). Through this workaround, every step worked normally without any errors or warnings. A big thank you to everyone involved in maintaining these packages! Bug#889180: plasma: memory leak
Yes, about every 5 minutes with a large slideshow collection too. However, if I sit on KSysGuard I can see the memory usage creeping up after Plasma has been started, probably before any image has actually changed. Also, I have the same configuration and pretty much exactly the same wallpaper collection on my desktop computer and I don't have a memory leak there. (I had made this message days ago but replied to Lisandro only and not to the bug address.) I have since also determined that my desktop computer suffers from the same issue. At one point it may be using as little as a couple hundred megabytes, and then later on, not necessarily many hours apart, it'll be well on its way to 2 gigabytes of RAM being consumed. It seems to be pretty much random how much it grows except that it tends to definitely grow over time. Logging out and logging in again from KDE resets the memory usage. Bug#889180: plasma: memory leak
I checked on my dekstop and plasmashell sits at around 350MB of memory use there - but that's after over 6 hours uptime, not a mere 10 minutes or so. Even then, it's using double that amount in my laptop, even when both have largely default configurations and the same version being used so it definitely seems something's amiss here. Bug#889180: plasma: memory leak
Package: plasma-desktop Version: 4:5.10.5-2 Severity: important File: plasma Hello, I have Debian with KDE installed in two computers. My usage of both computers is pretty much the same, with pretty much zero configuration differences between the machines. One may have different .deb package installed but they are pretty much identical (besides hardware, one being a desktop, this one being a laptop). This week I have updated both to the latest Debian testing packages so I know all KDE packages are in exacty the same versions on both computers. However, this current machine currently has a plasmashell process taking over 700MB of memory, while plasmashell in my desktop takes up around 100MB (or 150MB, can't remember) - which sounds a whole lot more reasonable. My current uptime on this laptop is 12 minutes. plasmashell keeps growing out of control for 5 to 10 minutes and apparently stabilizes at 700MB. This is certainly a bug, especially compared to normal usage on my other machine that is identical in terms of configuration and 99% of packages installed and my use of both also being very similar. Needldess to say, 700MB is a whole lot of memory being eaten up, degrading performance very noticeably, to the point where I'm installing XFCE as I write this so I can use my machine properly again until this is fixed. I know this report without more information is little to go on with but I'm just trying to make it clear there's an important issue here. Let me know which log files I should look at and how else I can help with getting the root issue identified and fixed. Thanks for the great work, I've been using KDE since I started using Linux and it's a large part of why I love the penguin OS! I'll come back to KDE as soon as this is fixed. Bug#889110: udev: extremely high cpu usage (overheats notebook after a minute of use)
Package: udev Version: 236-3 Severity: important Hello it's been a while since I update my Debian (testing) packages for my laptop computer but after updating all of them today it has been rendered unusable for all intents and purposes. The main issue is a process tree (systemd-udevd) hangs all my CPUs, at least one in 100% and the others at 50% or more consistently, non-stop. This causes my laptop to overheat anywhere between a minute or two minutes of use. The only way I'm able to write this is by issuing STOP signals to suspend the processes but it only lasts a couple minutes before it starts again on its own. Needless to say, this isn't what systemd should behave like and I can't even keep issuing STOP long enough for anything other than writing this message. My computer is practically unusable at this point unless I manually issue stop signals every couple of minutes before it overheats. Bug#879261:
Thank you Luca - I did see that the -nvidia libs are being dropped on the -8 changelog but I had no idea what that actually meant until I read your explanation. I was assuming these were modified library versions by Nvidia with enhancements to make the most out of the hardware but I guess their removal goes to show they're equivalent in any way. In that sense, my system should be fine right now, with maybe just a little headache to make sure all -nvidia packages are replaced properly in the next update. Thanks again for the extra information! Bug#879261:
Just wanted to apologize for my last message since I missed the "Fixed in version nvidia-graphics-drivers/375.82-8" message in the header. It also only seems to have been marked as a resolved bug (bugtracker category) as I was writing it. I'll wait for 375.82-8 to trickle down to testing and try to install it again and report here. Also, usually the bug tracker adds an internal message to the report once the bug is resolved, not sure why it didn't happen here? Maybe it doesn't work like that anymore... Anyway, thanks for the fix, looking forward to having my nvidia driver fully functional again soon!
Bug#879261:
I have also recently encountered problems with the nvidia-driver-libs dependencies on previous updates in my buster system (Debian testing) but somehow managed to work around it by using one of the alternative dependency options: I am currently using libgl1-nvidia-glx (instead of libgl1-nvidia-glvnd-glx) and libegl1-nvidia (instead of nvidia-egl-icd). I tried figuring out the root of the issue at the time so as to report a bug here but really couldn't since the dependency tree for the driver's libraries is quite complex and eventually just went with the "alternative options" route instead, through the aforementioned packages. However, when trying to upgrade my system today, I have come across an issue that is much more punctual and thus easier to report, which might have been the core of the problem all along (or not, I don't know). The root problem is that even though libglvnd0-nvidia indicates that it replaces libglvnd0, apt somehow doesn't seem to take that into account. Trying to remove both amd64 and i386 versions of libglvnd0 and attempting to install the two version of libglvnd0-nvidia instead, which should be a simple and straightforward operation since the second claims to replace the first, instead causes 7 broken dependencies on my system (seen via the aptitude package manager) - among which is libegl1, for example. I am not sure why this is happening but my hunch would be that libglvnd0-nvidia and libglvnd0-nvidia:i386 state that they both "replace" AND "conflict" with their standard libglvnd0 versions. I imagine this could confuse apt because it would then assume that "this package cannot ever be installed because it conflicts with a package used by so many other programs", which in turn leads it to ignore the actual "replaces" field. Anyway, whatever the real cause of the problem is, the fact is that, for all practical purposes, libglvnd0-nvidia is not able to replace libglvnd0 in my system - and the same for their i386 versions. If the maintainers could please look into this issue and try to solve it, it would be much appreciated, since, of course, I would want to have the nvidia version of the library installed since I assume it is enhanced to make use of the accelerated hardware. Also as it stands, libglvnd0-nvidia seems to be completely worthless as a package right now, since it cannot be installed, which for me sounds like a grave problem (as far as the Debian bug reporting guidelines define "grave": "makes the package in question unusable or mostly so"). Thank you for the excellent nvidia support on Debian and I'm certainly happy that I can currently keep using the non-nvidia library version (instead of just having the driver break entirely) - but please consider looking into this issue (even if only to realize it's an apt bug instead, which we should also report, if that's indeed the case). Let me know if I can help in any other way. Lastly, this bug is breaking routine upgrading in multiple system thats nvidia-driver (mine's and the original reporter's, at the very least) so please consider that this might be affecting a big number of Debian users who rely on these official Debian packages.
Bug#857986: npm: This pakcage is 3 years old? (consider removal)
I actually did give a use case for this: try installing polymer as per the instruction given on my initial report. It just doesn't work, as Jeremy states. NPM is a growing, dynamic repository and you'll be hard pressed to find any major package that is 3 years old and 100% compatible with the current version of this package in Debian. So yes, as I said before, and I stand by it, the fact it is so old and the NPM repository has continued to advance does, indeed "render [the] package unusable". Or as Jeremy puts it: "npm install thisorthatmodule` is failing for a growing list of modules". This is the most basic NPM operation and it is failing 100% of the time in many cases. Of course this can be fixed by updating the NPM version to the current version, as Ben says, but it shouldn't demote the priority to "wishlist": there's a real problem here with possible security implication (re Jeremy) and a major loss of usability (yes, to the point of "renders package unusable"). But anyway, if it was a simple thing to do, I'm sure someone would have done it at some point after 2014, so my first suggestion was to consider removal altogether. Jeremy, thank you for following through with this. I know asking for package removal is a big thing in Debian but if NPM is to stay, it needs to be up-to-date, and if it isn't, it better that it be removed. I think that's the best choice for now, thanks again! Bug#857986: npm: This pakcage is 3 years old? (consider removal)
Package: npm Version: 1.4.21+ds-2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Sorry for opening such a non-standard bug report but this page leads me to believe that the most up-to-date version we have for this package on Debian is from 2014 (see changelog on the menu on the right side of the screen): https://packages.debian.org/sid/npm I don't see any indication anywhere that there is a reason or justification for this. Node.js and NPM have become standard tools for web development and the *extremely outdated* version proved by this package siomply doesn't work anymore. I suggest this package be entirely removed to avoid well-meaning users from comiong across all sorts of bugs and errors while using npm due to a lack of update in what has become an essential tool. If Debian maintainers can't keep this up-to-date, this package being here probably does more harm than good to your average user who expects it to "Just Work". I wouldn't say this if I didn't know for a fact that this outdated version simply doesn't work anymore with the package.json files that are on the NPM repository (try installing polymer, for example: npm install -g polymer ). Node.js provides a single package (for Node and NPM) in their own repository. I'm not sure if any efforct can be done to bring this package version into Debian's repositories but if that's not possible, I believe that having a 3-year old version is doing more harm than good and that it is better for Debian not to offer such - and have users install from the official repository instead or from the website Linux download. Repository insall instructions https://nodejs.org/en/download/package-manager/#debian-and-ubuntu-based-linux-distributions Simple download from website https://nodejs.org/en/ Again, I doubt this years-old package here is doing any good for most users, and I imagine it's doing more harm since people might not even noticed their NPM tool is extremely outdated, which will obviously lead to hard to understand errors. -- System Information: Debian Release: 9.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.9.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages npm depends on: pn node-abbrev pn node-ansi pn node-ansi-color-table pn node-archy pn node-block-stream pn node-fstream pn node-fstream-ignore pn node-github-url-from-git pn node-glob pn node-graceful-fs pn node-gyp pn node-inherits pn node-ini pn node-lockfile pn node-lru-cache pn node-minimatch pn node-mkdirp pn node-nopt pn node-npmlog pn node-once pn node-osenv pn node-read pn node-read-package-json pn node-request pn node-retry pn node-rimraf pn node-semver pn node-sha pn node-slide pn node-tar pn node-underscore pn node-which ii nodejs7.7.3-1nodesource1~jessie1 npm recommends no packages. npm suggests no packages.

Bug#851216: plasma-workspace: Freezes for long periods of time or indefinitely
Package: plasma-workspace Version: 4:5.8.2-1 Severity: important Tags: upstream >From time to time the entire workspace will freeze, without apparent cause. In earlier versions it would take something around 5 minutes for it to get back to normal (after that time the menus, tray icons, desktop, etc would resume working, often carrying out the actions executed in the meantime). The current version seems to be worse: the workspace will halt indefintely. Thinks like global shortcut keys and application shortcuts still work, as do other KDE applications and functionality like moving windows between virtual desktops, the task switcher (alt+tab) and others like window actions. Taskbars and icons do not respond. There is no CPU activity while the workspace is frozen. Logging the user out and in again will solve the issue but this includes closing all applications, etc as normal, which is not at all an optimal workaround - but necessary since just waiting doesn't help. The log out takes a couple of minutes to follow through after the command is issued (via ctrl+alt+del since kickoff - the "K menu" or "start menu" - won't respond). I assume this delay happens because of a timer that waits for the workspace to respond for a while but after running out it just logs the user off without any response anyway. I suggest the maintaner up the severity at his own discretion because in such a state the KDE desktop shouldn't reach stable. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.8.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages plasma-workspace depends on: ii dbus-x11 1.10.14-1 ii frameworkintegration 5.27.0-1 ii gdb-minimal [gdb]7.12-4 ii iso-codes3.72-1 ii kactivitymanagerd5.8.2-1 ii kde-cli-tools4:5.8.2-1 ii kded55.27.0-1 ii kinit5.27.0-1 ii kio 5.27.0-2 ii kpackagetool55.27.0-1 ii libc62.24-8 ii libcln6 1.3.4-2 ii libdbusmenu-qt5-20.9.3+16.04.20160218-1 ii libgcc1 1:6.2.1-5 ii libgps22 3.16-4 ii libice6 2:1.0.9-1+b1 ii libkf5activities55.27.0-1 ii libkf5auth5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5baloo5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5bookmarks5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5calendarevents55.27.0-1+b1 ii libkf5completion55.27.0-1 ii libkf5configcore55.27.0-1 ii libkf5configgui5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5configwidgets5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5coreaddons55.27.0-1 ii libkf5crash5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5dbusaddons55.27.0-1 ii libkf5declarative5 5.27.0-1+b1 ii libkf5globalaccel-bin5.27.0-1 ii libkf5globalaccel5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5guiaddons5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5holidays5 16.04.2-1 ii libkf5i18n5 5.27.0-2 ii libkf5iconthemes55.27.0-1 ii libkf5idletime5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5itemviews5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5jobwidgets55.27.0-1 ii libkf5js55.27.0-1 ii libkf5jsembed5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5kdelibs4support5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5kiocore5 5.27.0-2 ii libkf5kiofilewidgets55.27.0-2 ii libkf5kiowidgets55.27.0-2 ii libkf5networkmanagerqt6 5.28.0-1 ii libkf5newstuff5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5notifications5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5notifyconfig5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5package5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5plasma55.27.0-1 ii libkf5plasmaquick5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5quickaddons5 5.27.0-1+b1 ii libkf5runner55.27.0-1 ii libkf5service-bin5.27.0-1 ii libkf5service5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5solid5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5texteditor55.27.0-1 ii libkf5textwidgets5 5.27.0-1 ii libkf5wallet-bin
Bug#850900: amarok: 6GREPME MySQLe query failed! (2000)
Package: amarok Version: 2.8.0-7 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hello, I've written in some detail about the bug here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=374891 I have marked this as grave because it generates data loss (the collection metadata, which is an integral part of Amarok and most users wouldn't enjoy losing their statistic, favorites, etc, built over years since this is a major part of Amarok). It also renders the packages unusable. It should be marked as grave so as to prevent the package from going to stable in its current state. My issue is similar to #849326 - the major difference being that Amarok also crashes when trying to play any file. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.8.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages amarok depends on: ii amarok-common 2.8.0-7 ii amarok-utils 2.8.0-7 ii kde-runtime 4:16.08.3-1 ii libavcodec57 7:3.2.2-1 ii libavformat57 7:3.2.2-1 ii libavutil55 7:3.2.2-1 ii libc6 2.24-8 ii libcurl3-gnutls 7.51.0-1 ii libgcrypt20 1.7.5-2 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-02.36.2-1 ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1] 13.0.2-3 ii libglib2.0-0 2.50.2-2 ii libgpod4 0.8.3-8 ii libkcmutils4 4:4.14.26-1 ii libkdecore5 4:4.14.26-1 ii libkdeui5 4:4.14.26-1 ii libkdewebkit5 4:4.14.26-1 ii libkdnssd44:4.14.26-1 ii libkfile4 4:4.14.26-1 ii libkio5 4:4.14.26-1 ii libknewstuff3-4 4:4.14.26-1 ii liblastfm11.0.9-1 ii libloudmouth1-0 1.5.3-2 ii libmariadbclient1810.1.20-3 ii libmariadbd18 10.1.20-3 ii libmtp9 1.1.12-1 ii libmygpo-qt1 1.0.9-2 ii libofa0 0.9.3-13 ii libphonon44:4.9.0-4 ii libplasma34:4.14.26-1 ii libqjson0 0.8.1-3 ii libqt4-dbus 4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqt4-network4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqt4-opengl 4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqt4-script 4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqt4-sql4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqt4-svg4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqt4-xml4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqtcore44:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqtgui4 4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 ii libqtscript4-core 0.2.0-1 ii libqtscript4-gui 0.2.0-1 ii libqtscript4-network 0.2.0-1 ii libqtscript4-sql 0.2.0-1 ii libqtscript4-uitools 0.2.0-1 ii libqtscript4-xml 0.2.0-1 ii libqtwebkit4 2.3.4.dfsg-9.1 ii libsolid4 4:4.14.26-1 ii libstdc++66.2.1-5 ii libthreadweaver4 4:4.14.26-1 ii libx11-6 2:1.6.4-2 ii libxml2 2.9.4+dfsg1-2.1 ii phonon4:4.9.0-4 Versions of packages amarok recommends: ii clamz0.5-2+b1 ii kio-audiocd 4:16.08.3-1 Versions of packages amarok suggests: pn amarok-doc ii libqt4-sql-mysql 4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 pn libqt4-sql-psql ii libqt4-sql-sqlite 4:4.8.7+dfsg-11 pn moodbar Versions of packages amarok-common depends on: pn perl:any amarok-common recommends no packages. Bug#846147: mednafen: Consider adding the mednaffe package as recommended
Package: mednafen Version: 0.9.39.2+dfsg-1 Severity: wishlist Hello! mednafen is the best emulator on Debian in my opinion (not to say best emulator ever) but it is a bit on the technical side to work with, especially for the less technical users out there who just want to play games. In this regard I just came accross the mednaffe pacakage. I haven't tested it extensively but it seems to be a superb front-end for mednafen and I'm sure I'll be using it from now on - and I believe it would help others have a better gaming experience with mednafen as well. If you would consider adding it as a "recommended" package it will make sure that some package managers will install it together with mednafen. The mednaffe comes with a start-menu shortcut so users that install mednafen will be able to just go to their game section and start mednafen via mednaffe and not even notice they're two different programs. I am a technical user and I understand that mednafen is to be launched from the command line and I even set up my own shortcuts and file associations in my file manager/explorer to automatically launch games. Most gamers though don't know how to do that, not to mention find and configure the emulator. mednaffe makes launching and configuring your games as simple as possible considering the complexety of the emulator itself. Please kindly consider adding it as a recommended companion program (which advanced users are then free not to install). -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.8.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages mednafen depends on: ii libasound21.1.2-1 ii libc6 2.24-5 ii libgcc1 1:6.2.0-13 ii libjack-jackd2-0 [libjack-0.116] 1.9.10+20150825git1ed50c92~dfsg-3 ii libmpcdec62:0.1~r495-1 ii libsdl1.2debian 1.2.15+dfsg1-4 ii libsndfile1 1.0.27-1 ii libstdc++66.2.0-13 ii libtrio2 1.16+dfsg1-3 ii libvorbisidec11.0.2+svn18153-0.2 ii zlib1g1:1.2.8.dfsg-2+b3 mednafen recommends no packages. mednafen suggests no packages. -- no debconf information

Bug#837617: snoopy: Compile with --enable-config-file
Just saw on the changelog file that the configuration file is disabled due to performance issues, which is understandable. It's a shame though since the configuration file is indeed very useful (thinking of filters mostly here). Are you sure that there is overhead other than in snoopy's startup routine? I'd imagine such a piece of software would be written with that sort of concern in mind. The devs seem pretty approachable on GitHub, maybe they can clear this out or offer a solution with low overhead? Let me know if I can help in any way. Bug#837617: snoopy: Compile with --enable-config-file
Package: snoopy Version: 2.3.1-2 Severity: normal Hello! The doc files provided for snoopy reference the /etc/snoopy.ini file but I can't seem to find it. Perhaps this package has been compiled without the config file support? If that is the case then some of the doc files need to be either updated or removed. If the file is somehwere but I can't seem to find it then the docs should be updated and probably a symbolic link be created from /etc/snoopy.etc to the actual file. In any case, if that is not already being done, I believe that snoopy should definitely be compiled with --enable-config-file for maximum admin control, since the whole point of having a binary package via apt is to avoid having to compile the source code ourselves (which we could do to change compile-time parameters/configuration/options). Thanks for maintaning this package. I just found out today about it and it will certainly help me diagnose a problem here. To find it already on Debian was a real treat and made me proud of my distro! Thanks a bunch! Bug#836431: ksnapshot: Update dependency from libkipi11 to libkf5kipi31.0.0
Thank you Diederik. I see the unstable knaspshot package is now a transitional package. I'm not sure if I didn't notice this before or if this was maybe prompted by this bug report here. Anyway, thank you for the info and work as a Debian maintainer :) On 3 September 2016 at 13:42, Diederik de Haas <didi.deb...@cknow.org> wrote: > On zaterdag 3 september 2016 00:00:31 CEST Alex Henry wrote: > > ksnapshot is holding back gwenview > > Switch to kde-spectacle which is the successor to ksnapshot. > Ksnapshot is no longer developed and it is likely it will be removed from > the > archives.
Bug#836431: ksnapshot: Update dependency from libkipi11 to libkf5kipi31.0.0
Just to clarify: the actual conflict seems to be "libkf5kipi-data breaks libkipi-data" which is why I apparently can't have both libkipi11 (dependence for ksnapshot) and libkf5kipi31.0.0 (dependence for gwenview) installed simultaneously. Again the naming here seems to suggest that it's simply a case of the new version being renamed to libkf5-- (probably as a way to indicate it's part of the KDE 5 framework?) Bug#836431: ksnapshot: Update dependency from libkipi11 to libkf5kipi31.0.0
Package: ksnapshot Version: 4:15.08.0-1 Severity: normal Hello, I've noticed a problem now while updating the KDE packages on my system to the next set of available testing packages. All packages seemed to update normally but ksnapshot is holding back gwenview due to a conflict between libkipi11 and libkf5kipi31.0.0. My understanding is that the latter is simply the new name for the package so if you could update the dependency to point to the latter it would probably solve the issue. This has just been a superficial analisys so sorry if I'm wrong - but gwenview for example is depending on the 31.0.0 package instead, which replaces libkipi11 so I hope this is a safe assumption. Thanks for the great work maintaining this package. It has been my one and only screenshot tool since moving to Linux and KDE over a decade ago. Package: steam Version: 1.0.0.52-3 Severity: important The internal browser doesn't seem to be working: the loading icon just keeps spinning for minutes on end with no result. This breaks the login help (password recovery) to viewing the store and wishlist and probably many other features dependent on the internal browser. I've just installed Steam via aptitude (apt-get) today and it automatically updated to the newest version upon opening. Bug#601605: fbreader: Make it a minor bug
Package: fbreader Version: 0.12.10dfsg2-1 Followup-For: Bug #601605 I actually think this is a bug, not a wishlist item. A program should be registered to open the files it is able to open. Imagine someone without much technical knowledge: reads fbreader is able to open epub books on the web, installs package and then fails to open the books/files upon clicking on them. It could practically make the package unusable on this case. Sure it's not a major bug but it's a bug nonetheless. Bug#820478: okular-extra-backends: cannot open epub even with extra-backends package installed
Package: okular-extra-backends Version: 4:15.08.3-1 Severity: normal Hello, I have just installed the okular-extra-backends package and am unable to open .epub files with Okular, which the package description says I should be able to do. When I try to open any ePub document I get a dialog saying: "Could not open /path/to/myfile.epub" (replace with proper path) The main UI window also indicates: "Can not find a plugin which is able to handle the document being passed". Let me know what I can do to help fix and test this. After installing the extra-backends package ePub files have been associated with Okular, which they weren't before so it's further indication that the program should be able to handle them. The files open fine on fbreader. I'd also like to question why isn't the extra-backends package recommended instead of suggested (which would make it install by default on some package managers like aptitude). Especially due to the epub capability I think it should be recommended, as I see many people on the web ask about epub readers for Linux and Okular's premise of being a all-in-one reader makes it perfect as an ebook reader. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.4.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages okular-extra-backends depends on: ii libc6 2.22-5 ii libchm1 2:0.40a-3+b1 ii libdjvulibre21 3.5.27.1-5 ii libepub00.2.2-4+b1 ii libkdecore5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libkdeui5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libkhtml5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libkio5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libokularcore6 4:15.08.3-1 ii libqt4-xml 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libqtcore4 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libqtgui4 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libstdc++6 5.3.1-13 ii libtiff54.0.6-1 Versions of packages okular-extra-backends recommends: ii okular 4:15.08.3-1 okular-extra-backends suggests no packages. -- no debconf information
Bug#813423: I understand
I understand your position but I think it's hard to guess how many may be affected by this without fully understanding the cause. May be that not everyone is affected but maybe hte majority is? If that is the case pulseaudio is broken for headphone users. > I do not agree it is release critical. Again I understand but you' re disagreeing with the upstream team who consider it release-critical themselves: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93259#c12
Bug#813423: Make this release-critical
Hello, I have just contributed to the bug report linked on the last comment. I'd also like to ask the maintainer to change the severity of this bug into something that is release-critical to prevent this version from reaching stable. Please understand that in the current version the entire audio system is broken at the moment you plug headphones in or out - which is something many of us do everyday, many times per day. This means the audio system is possibly requiring a normal user to reboot the system just to have sound working on his computer if he doesn't know how to manage the service, hence it's not at all suitable for Debian stable. Also a quick fix for those experiencing the issue, from my recent comment on the link above. The following terminal command will restore audio to your system after you jack your headphones in or out: pulseaudio --kill;pulseaudio --start
Bug#815670: kalarm: Some KDE applications do not autorstart properly
Package: kalarm Version: 4:4.14.10-2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I am having trouble with some KDE applications and their start-up process. After reporting a KDE bug they told me it was likely to be a Debian issue. I agrre that it could very well be the case, if so more likely a missing dependency or incorrect minimum version dependency on some KDE packages. The bug report starts as a more specific problem but we eventually figured out it'a wider issue. We came down to this error message as the culprit: kalarmautostart(14710) AutostartApp::slotAutostart: No command line The full bug report can be found here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358027 I am tagging this as a grave bug because if the applications are supposed to be automatically run at login and they aren't it could render them unusable to a normal user. Luckily I have the knowledge to set up some scripts to deal with it in my own system. This is probably a wider KDE issue, not only kdepim's or kalarm's so let me know if this should be reported elsewhere and if I can help with further information or testing. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.3.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages kalarm depends on: ii kde-runtime 4:15.08.3-1+b1 ii kdepim-runtime 4:4.14.10-2 ii kdepimlibs-kio-plugins 4:4.14.10-1 ii libakonadi-contact4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libakonadi-kde4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libakonadi-kmime4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libc6 2.21-9 ii libgcc1 1:5.3.1-8 ii libkabc44:4.14.10-1 ii libkalarmcal2 4:4.14.10-1 ii libkcalcore44:4.14.10-1 ii libkcalutils4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libkdecore5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libkdepim4 4:4.14.10-2 ii libkdeui5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libkholidays4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libkio5 4:4.14.14-1+b1 ii libkmime4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libkpimidentities4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libkpimutils4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libmailtransport4 4:4.14.10-1 ii libphonon4 4:4.8.3-2 ii libqt4-dbus 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libqt4-network 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libqtcore4 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libqtgui4 4:4.8.7+dfsg-6 ii libstdc++6 5.3.1-8 ii libx11-62:1.6.3-1 ii perl5.22.1-7 ii phonon 4:4.8.3-2 kalarm recommends no packages. Bug#812905: texlive-latex-extra: Documentation package(s) too big for a recommendation
Package: texlive-latex-extra Version: 2015.20160117-1 Severity: minor Hello, I'm opening a dependency-related suggestion for the following packages: texlive-latex-extra texlive-pictures texlive-pstricks texlive-latex-base. I see that the Debian TeX Maintainers group is responsible for all of them so I'm just gonna write a single report and hope that it is propagated or at least considered as a modification to texlive-latex-extra only, which is the most relevant here. All of the mentioned have a corresponding "package-doc" package that is actually listed as a recommended package, which makes tools like aptitude download and install it by default with the corresponding base package. The problem is that all these together round up to half a gigabyte of download and storage, which is a lot for installed-by-default documentation packages. The solution would be for these packages to only suggest (instead of recommend) their respective *-doc packages. I understand that it's perfectly reasonable for a package to recommend it's own documentation but in this case due to the sheer size of texlive-latex-extra-doc (especially) I would ask that the maintainers take this request into consideration. There are also other texlive-*-doc packages recommending their own documentation but I am only mentioning here those with a large download size - around 50MB or more, which is large compared to the size of other -doc packages found in the Debian repository. If the maintainers think that modifying all or some of the packages from recommends to suggests would then result in it becoming a chore to install all of them individually for the administrator who actually wants all of them installed then an option would be to create a texlive-doc, texlive-latex-doc or both as virtual packages. This way the virtual package(s) could depend on all respective -doc packages so they can all be installed conviniently as a single package. Thank you all for supporting Debian and the FOSS community! -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages texlive-latex-extra depends on: ii preview-latex-style11.87-3+deb8u1 ii tex-common 6.04 ii texlive-base 2015.20160117-1 ii texlive-binaries 2015.20150524.37493-7+b1 ii texlive-latex-recommended 2015.20160117-1 ii texlive-pictures 2015.20160117-1 Versions of packages texlive-latex-extra recommends: ii texlive-fonts-recommended 2015.20160117-1 ii texlive-latex-extra-doc2015.20160117-1 Versions of packages texlive-latex-extra suggests: ii libfile-which-perl 1.19-1 pn libspreadsheet-parseexcel-perl pn python-pygments Versions of packages tex-common depends on: ii dpkg 1.18.4 ii ucf 3.0031 Versions of packages tex-common suggests: pn debhelper Versions of packages texlive-latex-extra is related to: ii tex-common6.04 ii texlive-binaries 2015.20150524.37493-7+b1 -- no debconf information

Bug#808244: dolphin: Crashes randomly and frequently
Package: dolphin Version: 4:15.08.3-1 Severity: important Tags: upstream I'm sorry about opening a bug report with so little information but this is a major issue with dolphin, at least on my setup so it needs to be informed. The program crashes constanly and I can't find steps to reproduce it. The crashes always happen when I'm interacting with the application (never when it is idle in the backdround). It seems to happen more often when I am using drag-and-drop operations between split views but not only then and mostly randomly so it could be my imagination. The crashes simply close the Dolphin window without error messages except for "Segmentation fault' if it was open via a console. These messages appear on start-up but I'd guess they are not driectly related to the problem "Trying to convert empty KLocalizedString to QString." KSambaShare: Could not find smb.conf! I am using KDE5. I haven't had anything similar happen to any other KDE application like kate, kwrite or amarok. Steps to reproduce: simply use a dolphin instance for 3-5 minutes. Simply browsing the filesystem is enough for the bug to trigger eventually. As you can see this is a major usability issue. Opening a new instance will have the same results: it will work as expected for a little while then crash again. If more than one window is open only a single one will crash at a time. The other one will crash too after a little more use. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to try to narrow the issue down. All I know for sure is that dolphin is crashing constantly and reliably. I'll update this request if I notice any reproducible patterns in the future. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages dolphin depends on: ii libc6 2.19-22 ii libdolphinvcs5 4:15.08.3-1 ii libkf5baloo5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5baloowidgets515.08.0-2 ii libkf5bookmarks5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5codecs5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5completion5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5configcore5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5configgui5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5configwidgets5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5coreaddons5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5dbusaddons5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5filemetadata35.16.0-1 ii libkf5i18n55.16.0-1 ii libkf5iconthemes5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5itemviews5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5jobwidgets5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5kcmutils55.16.0-1 ii libkf5kiocore5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5kiofilewidgets5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5kiowidgets5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5newstuff55.16.0-1 ii libkf5notifications5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5parts5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5service-bin 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5service5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5solid5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5textwidgets5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5widgetsaddons5 5.16.0-1 ii libkf5windowsystem55.16.0-1 ii libkf5xmlgui5 5.16.0-1 ii libphonon4qt5-44:4.8.3-2 ii libqt5core5a 5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5dbus55.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5gui5 5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5widgets5 5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5xml5 5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libstdc++6 5.2.1-23 ii phonon4qt5 4:4.8.3-2 Versions of packages dolphin recommends: ii ruby 1:2.2.3 Versions of packages dolphin suggests: pn dolphin-plugins -- no debconf information

Bug#804638: kde-plasma-desktop: "The window switcher installation is broken"
Package: kde-plasma-desktop Version: 5:90 Severity: minor I have installed KDE via kde-plasma-desktop (plus kwin-x11) instead of kde-standard which has too many applications I don't use. This way I have more freedom over what is installed in my system. If I am doing things the wrong way please close this bug report. Otherwise: The problem is that when I go to Window Manager Settings (right-clicking on any window title bar) if I choose Task Switcher and have a visualization enabled (like Cover Switch or Flip Switch from the drop box) the next time I do an ALT+TAB I will get a message saying: The Window Switcher installation is broken, resources are missing. Contact your distribution about this. If I disable the transition effects (using the disable button to the left of the drop box) then the error no longer appears so this isn't a grave problem - probably just a missing dependency which would be nice to have fixed in order to be able to enjoy the transition effects whenever kde-plasma-desktop is installed. Please let me know if there is a better package this bug could be reported against. Bug#804636: kde-plasma-desktop: Should depend on kwin-x11
Package: kde-plasma-desktop Version: 5:90 Severity: normal Honorable maintainer, First let me apologize if this is the wrong package for my report but I'll explain why I thought it would be. In the past I had used the kdm package as a package that would install a bare-bones KDE system on a computer. It would bring the window manager, the startup hooks and etc, without also installing every single KDE application. The kdm package is gone so I tried kde-plasma-desktop. It worked perfectly except for the fact that it didn't install the 'kwin-x11' package, which left me with a functioning plasma desktop without proper windows or window management. I can't see why someone would want a kde-plasma-desktop without KWin or X so please consider depending on that package. I can understand there could be some use cases I'm not able to see - in which case please consider using "recommends kwin-x11" or at least a x-window-manager virtual package, if that would make sense. Bug#784166: widelands: Game crashes on song change
Thank you again. It does seem that my package mix-up was the culprit somehow. Unfortunately I don't have more time to look into the issue - I just posted the bug report thinking this was a issue everyone would have when downloading the amd64 package. It seems I was wrong but the intentions were good :) On 7 May 2015 at 18:29, Bernhard Übelacker bernha...@vr-web.de wrote: Hello Alex, One last question: did you try to install the amd64 version specifically? I'm not sure how the multi-arch support works these days. If not, would it be easy for you to try to do it? Yes, my tests were done on my regular amd64 desktop installation. That was with widelands_18-3+b1_amd64.deb. Thank you for taking the time to look into the issue! I wish I could downgrade the libboost packages needed to compile the source code to see if the build would have the bug or not. They are not in the dependencies but are on the build-deps: https://packages.debian.org/source/jessie/widelands I am actually running Squeeze with some packages from Stretch. I did a manual build from the source code and the game runs fine, with these exact packages you listed for me. I am still suspecting the problem to be libboost (check the bug report I mentioned earlier for why) even though I can't be sure. I guess I should probably close the bug if we cannot reproduce it, since it could be due to my weird package mix? For the fun of it I tried to really reproduce the situation (qemu-VM): - installed Squeeze LTS with LXDE - added Stretch sources.list But I was not able to cleanly install widelands via apt. Trying to manually installing via dpkg led also to some (for me) unresolvable dependencies (without doing nearly half of the dist-upgrade). Therefore I am short before thinking that now your package system is in an inconsistent state. Unfortunately I got myself into a sort of a deadlock with that and need to reinstall the system from scratch. As I think you also did a libc-upgrade (2.11.3-4+deb6u5 to 2.19-18 ?) I cannot say how a downgrade of it has to be done. Probably a dist-upgrade to Jessie or Stretch could work ... (But for this to work the package system needs to be consistent - you have checked what apt-get install -f proposes?) - At least, the problem this report was opened for seems to be a result of the package mix of Squeeze and Stretch. Kind regards, Bernhard

If this situation is supported by Debian is up to the maintainers. To get more information out of such a crash one could have a look at https://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace points 1 and 3. But for widelands to run with these old package version it needs to be built against these old versions what I doubt to happen in Jessie. Therefore 2 further things could happen: - build it in squeeze-backports and/or - build the package in Jessie with a minimum version dependency (then apt would try to install also newer versions of the dependencies, even when installed in oldoldstable.) Bug#784166: widelands: Game crashes on song change
Package: widelands Version: 1:18-3+b1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hello, I have found a bug that seems to be specific to this build on debian amd64 testing (stretch). I did not test other packages but I built the game myself from source and so far I had no problems. What happens is that once the first song ends (intro+menu songs I assume from the file names on the console output) the game crashes, literally exiting the game without any sort of error message except on the console: *** Error in `widelands': double free or corruption (fasttop): 0x01c05b70 *** Aborted This happened indepedently of if I wait for the song to finish on the main menu or if I was in-game. After reading Bug #1220546 (on Widelands' Launchpad) I decided to compile my own version from the source-code of Build 18. As mentioned in the bug report I made sure to update the libboost and a few other packages to their Debian-testing versions. Unfortunately though many of the dependencies I used to compile are from squezze (oldstable) since my setup is a bit awkward at the moment - libsdl1.2*, for example. Since this is the same source code I assume is being used in the .deb package I reason that this binary package was compiled with older libboost libraries and that a simple recompile could solve the issue. I hope this helps in fixing the problem because as-is this package is useless: you can only play for about a minute or two before the game crashes. I'm not sure if turning off the music would solve anything. Anyway thank you for the great game and please make sure that this doesn't happen on the recent Debian stable release or you will probably discourage many people from trying out the game. Oh well, I just checked that and both testing and stable seem to be at version 1:18-3+b1 (amd64) which is a bit worrisome, especially if a simple recompile could solve this. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.10 APT prefers oldoldstable APT policy: (500, 'oldoldstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages widelands depends on: ii fonts-dejavu-core 2.34-1Vera font family derivate with add ii fonts-dejavu-extra 2.34-1Vera font family derivate with add ii fonts-freefont-ttf 20120503-4Freefont Serif, Sans and Mono True ii libc6 2.19-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc11:4.9.2-10GCC support library ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl 7.7.1-6 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglew1.101.10.0-3 OpenGL Extension Wrangler - runtim ii liblua5.1-05.1.4-5 Simple, extensible, embeddable pro ii libpng12-0 1.2.44-1+squeeze4 PNG library - runtime ii libsdl-gfx1.2-52.0.25-4 drawing and graphical effects exte ii libsdl-image1.21.2.10-2+b2 image loading library for Simple D ii libsdl-mixer1.21.2.8-6.3 mixer library for Simple DirectMed ii libsdl-net1.2 1.2.7-2 network library for Simple DirectM ii libsdl-ttf2.0-02.0.9-1 ttf library for Simple DirectMedia ii libsdl1.2debian1.2.14-6.1Simple DirectMedia Layer ii libstdc++6 4.9.2-10 GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii widelands-data 1:18-3fantasy real-time strategy game (d ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime widelands recommends no packages. widelands suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#693459: dolphin: Dolphin executes executable files instead of using the registered application
Package: dolphin Version: 4:4.4.5-2 Severity: normal Tags: upstream When clicking an executable (chmod +x) file in Dolphin, it runs it instead of using the associated program. Bug#639440: [debian-installer] Automatic partiotining: small /tmp
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- When using the automatic partitioning into separate partitions, the installer created a 386M /tmp partition. This is not enough, for example, when watching a full-length YouTube movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z9WVZddH9w , filling the partition and stopping playback (probably confusing a less experienced user). I understand you can reload the YouTube movie and skip to the current position, resuming playback and fixing the problem temporarily (I needed to do this 4x to finish the movie) but in the case of a long vimeo.com movie, for example, it can't be done (as I've suffered in the past). I'm not sure I should report the bug here or in the appropriate browser or Flash plugin package, but as the installer left me with a 295G /home partition (which is mostly empty while /tmp is occasionally 100% full), I honestly think there's room for improvement in the partitioner (at least recommending novice users not to use multiple partitions, for example). Bug#390685: xscreensaver: Workaround presented
Package: xscreensaver Version: 5.03-2 Followup-For: Bug #390685 Hi there, I've found a workaround that I believe may be of help when trying to resolve the bug. If, after the mouse hangs (and the pointer just disappears from screen) you're able to restart a screensaver, the pointer just reappears, fully functional. Ex: After the mouse hangs, I execute the command `xscreensaver-demo` (from KDE's pop-up execute command, ALT+F2), then open a preview window (ALT+P from the screensaver preferences window), and then my mouse starts working again. Maybe this will help to fix the issue, or maybe help other users to have a manual workaround. Anyway, thanks for the best screensaver package on GNU/Linux! Bug#431605: korganizer: Many events without hours associated in a single day disappear
Package: korganizer Version: 4:3.5.7-4 Followup-For: Bug #431605 Hey there, It's been quite a while since I first reported this bug. Anyway, it keeps happening despite my periodical updates. Upon further examination of the issue, I've seen the only events disappearing are the ones that share the same day with many other. For example: having 10 events crowded in the same day will eventualy erase them all automatically. Note these events never have associated hours. Other events, with or without associated hours, that are in other days, are not affected. I'm posting at the end of the email an illustrative collection of fragments of the events that disappeared from my std.ics You may note that all/many of these events have the same category, and that it's name has a non-standard character ('á'). Maybe it has something to do with the bug, maybe not. I thank all again for the great software and great work, but this is a serious issue with permanent data loss! Bug#436256: pdfjam: Giant dependency set
Package: pdfjam Version: 1.20-2 Severity: wishlist Hi there, I've used pdfjam several times to merge pdf files - it's a very nice program. But the sheer size of it's dependencies is huge: - texlive-fonts-recommended sums up to 178MB - tetex-extra sums to 662MB! (the same with texlive-latex-recommended!) It ends up that a simple command-line pdf utility can take almost 200MB HD space, up to more than 600MB in the worst case scenario. This is not a bug per se - I fully understand that TeX is the backbone of the application - but I suggest a dependecies' review. Are all packages in the meta-packages dependences really needed, isn't it possible to narrow them down? Thanks for the time! Bug#431605: korganizer: events disappear
I've always used local (no NFS nor kio slaves) plain text files ( _~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics_ ). When I used the backup file to restore data lost, it was also located on a local disk (again, no NFS nor kio slaves) - _/mnt/hdb1/stuff/backup.ics_ - and I added it as a resource using KOrganizer's lateral bar, so I could copy events to the default iCalendar file. I've never synced it, neither with other programs nor with external hardware. Hope this helps! Alex Sune Vuorela wrote: On Thursday 12 July 2007, Alex Henry wrote: The bug has manifested again! Bug#431605: korganizer: events disappear
The bug has manifested again! I'm attaching _after.ics_ (which was added to KOrganizer, but hidden, preventing it from being altered manually) and _before.ics_ (which was only added, as read-only, today to make sure there were events disappearing). A close look on date 2007-06-12 shows events dissapeared, but it happens on other days too. As stated, none of the files were altered manually, as I'm working with another default file under my home directory. Hope this will help! That's why I've been so surprised and sad to see that my events kept disappearing for no reason at all, even using a Debian testing version (which shouldn't be unstable). I haven't looked too much on the problem, but I do suspect the version I'm using now erases events created on older versions which are still present in the .ics file. I'll be sending one of my backup .ics files as soon I can - every time I open it, it shows all events, but on the first save, they're gone again (which is a real problem when auto-save is on). Copying and pasting those events dosen't seem to help, but creating a brand new event and then copying+pasting the information across the old and new event do seem to work. Hi! I have had a quick chat with some nice upstream people. It would be really nice if we could get several pieces of interesting information. (nfs:// fish:// or ... ) Do you sync with other programs ? like kpilot, kmobiletools, kitchensync, ... ? Is it possible that we could get a 'before' and 'after' file - in the same set. The best bet currently is that there is some fancy corruption in your .ics file that korganizer handles less optimal. Bug#431453: Should add symbolic link /usr/bin/unrar-/usr/bin/unrar-free ?
Package: unrar-free Version: 1:0.0.1+cvs20070515-1 Severity: wishlist Most applications that use unrar check for the file '$PATH/unrar'. Installing the 'unrar-free' package has been mostly useless to me, but now that I've created a symlink named '$PATH/unrar' pointing to the '/usr/bin/unrar-free' executable, all rar-dependent apps seem to work normally. My suggestion is to create this link during the Debian packages's installation. Is it possible? Would be even better if it checked not to overwrite any pre-existent /usr/bin/unrar file! Bug#431379: kdevelop: Simple KDE Application doesn't compile
Package: kdevelop Version: 4:3.4.0-3 Severity: normal Hi there, I've been reading a Qt Designer and KDevelop 3.0 for Beginners [ http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/KDE3/Qt_Designer_and_KDevelop_3.0_for_Beginners ]. It instructed me to follow some simple steps: - Get KDevelop 3 (Which I did by using apt-get) - Create a framework with KDevelop (Using the menu item 'C++ - KDE - Simple KDE Application') - Ensure that everything is fine, using 'Build - Run automake friends' then 'Build - Run configure'. I've had a problem with this last part. 'Build - Run automake friends' works well, but 'Build - Run configure' tells me my C++ preprocessor has an error. Check KDevelop output below - below it there's also the resulting config.log, with more details. I guess this must be an incompatibility between KDevelop and CPP versions. So I guess this makes it a Debian-testing problem, not one from KDE, KDevelop and/or CPP. Anyway, I believe KDevelop's package's 'depends' and/or 'suggests' should be fixed - after all, something is preventing me (and probably other Debian testing users) from learning KDE development ; ) One more thing: After having this problem, I've just 'apt-get update' KDevelop and CPP to the versions I'm using now. This haven't changed a thing in the outputs. I'd be happy to help more, if I could. Below are the outputs.
