Bug#619648: cron.daily doesn't execute scheduled scripts

2024-03-22 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: anacron
Version: 2.3-39+b1
Followup-For: Bug #619648
X-Debbugs-Cc: vent...@debian.org

Dear Maintainer,

I can reproduce this issue. While scripts in my personal crontab that are run
by cron are executed fine, the ones owned by anacron don't seem to be executed
although the syslog suggests otherwise.

For example, a line starting with @daily does not work (i.e. run by anacron)
but when changing it to @hourly it does -- this time cron seems to take over.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#1013356: fzf: Bash completions not active by default

Package: fzf
Version: 0.42.0-1+b3
Followup-For: Bug #1013356

Dear Maintainer,

there's also this weird behaviour, that wile bash completion is not enabled by
default, it will be enabled once you do:

fzf **

after that a

cd **

works as expected. If bash completion is not enabled on purpose, I would
consider this behaviou a bug. But I believe just enabling the bash completion
by default would be the better solution.

Cheers,

Bastian

Hi,

i can confirm this issue. I wonder is there a reason why the bash completion is
not enabled by default? Other packages provide their bash completions by
default as well and it is certainly the behaviour I'd expect when installing
fzf.

I've just updated all packages from unstable, including glibc and the
problem is solved. So, it might have been the one you've described.
Thanks for your help and your work!

Well, this is messed up - something is setting the display name of an
ESource (a calendar or address book or something similar) to a value that
is, apparently, so long that allocating memory for its collation key (a
version that has been modified to sort in the correct locale-sensitive
order) will fail.

I wonder whether this is the same root cause as #1040452: glibc (>= 2.37-2)
sometimes generating corrupted locale archives? That might explain why
g_utf8_collate_key() would get nonsense results.

Please try with glibc (>= 2.37-5) which fixes that bug, and maybe this
one too.

I think this is the key thing here: some upgraded package has caused
gnome-shell to try (and fail) to allocate 51G of RAM at once. The rest
of what you quoted is just fallout from this.

Agreed.

Since there was no upgrade in Gnome recently, I suspect that one of the
dependencies got an upgrade. I do vaguely remember evolution, systemd and libc6
being the biggest updates today.

Please check /var/log/apt for recent upgrades. Mesa is another possibility,
and if you have any GNOME Shell extensions installed/enabled, so are those.

I don´t have any shell extensions enabled.

It would be useful to know whether a different user account on the
same system shows the same issue (create a new one with adduser from a
text-mode login if necessary) - that would narrow down whether this is
triggered by some user-specific setting or whether it's a system-wide
issue. gnome-shell is clearly not *completely* unusable on your system,
because you say gdm3 is working, and the gdm3 UI is just gnome-shell in
a special mode - but that special mode turns off a lot of code paths,
including the whole application chooser, which seems to be involved in
the crash.

Done. I've created a new user and tried to login, with the same results.

If you can get a core dump/backtrace from the crash (the syslog entries
that you quoted include a Javascript-level backtrace, but not a C-level
one) then that would probably also be useful information. Installing
system-coredump and using `coredumpctl gdb` is usually the easiest way
to get that, especially for components larger than a single application.

I can try that, do you have a link with some tutorial on how to do that?

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#1040297: gnome: Gnome fails to start on login and falls back to GDM3

2023-07-04 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: gnome
Version: 1:43+1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
X-Debbugs-Cc: vent...@debian.org

Dear Maintainer,

since yesterday, Gnome fails to start and falls back to GDM3 when I try to
login. I cannot start gnome on wayland nor xorg anymore. Gnome classic fails as
well. Falling back to the terminal and trying `startx` does also not start
gnome either. Installing something else (MATE) helps.

Since there was no upgrade in Gnome recently, I suspect that one of the
dependencies got an upgrade. I do vaguely remember evolution, systemd and libc6
being the biggest updates today.

Here's some output of journalctl that looks suspicious. Maybe it helps you:

Bug#1035736: neovim: Turning off the banner causes the cursor to flicker permanently and CPU usage goes up

2023-06-18 Thread Bastian Venthur
I think it is related to wl-copy, which is installed and used on all my
machines where this error occurs. More specifically, when browsing /tmp
and turning off the banner, I can actually see folders like
`wl-copy-buffer-X` appearing and disappearing in very quick
succession. I suspect this is related to that buggy behavior.

I've issued a bugreport upstream:

https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/23650

with steps to reproduce:

cd /tmp
nvim --clean

:set clipboard=unnamedplus
:Explore
   # press 'I' to disable the banner in netrw

can you try to reproduce it with these steps? This behavior is BTW also
reproducible in vim.

Cheers,

Bastian

I can't reproduce this. “nvim --clean” followed by “:e .” and pressing
I doesn't result in flickering or high CPU usage.

If this “nvim --clean” works fine, then I'd suggest looking through your
config and “:scriptnames” to see what may be affecting it.

Bug#1035736: neovim: Turning off the banner causes the cursor to flicker permanently and CPU usage goes up

2023-05-08 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: neovim
Version: 0.7.2-7
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: vent...@debian.org

Dear Maintainer,

Turning off the netrw's banner (netrw-I), via g:netrw_banner and or by pressing
"I" in the Explorer causes the cursor to flicker permanently and the CPU usage
goes up to 50% or so. In the case of using the g:netrw_banner option, you have
to open the Explorer first to make the effect visible.

I don't use any plugins and my configuration is quite minimal. The effect does
not happen in plain old vim.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#1028451: 2nd DisplayPort doesn't get video

2023-01-17 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.1.4-1
Followup-For: Bug #1028451
X-Debbugs-Cc: vent...@debian.org

Dear Maintainer,

I can confirm this bug on my Lenovo T14s with integrated AMD graphics. I have
two monitors connected via docking station. One Display Port the other one via
HDMI, since 6.1 only one of them shows active already after starting the boot
process.

Via Gnome's system settings, I can see that both monitors are there, I can
however only ever activate one of them (if that makes sense). That is maybe the
new bit of information from the original bugreport as that not only the 2nd DP
is affected but the HDMI as well.

On <= 6.0 this was never an issue. Please note that I'm currently running 6.0
in order to use both monitors.

Cheers,

Bastian

Thanks alot for this quick and nice improvement!

If I may add two tiny wishlist requests:

1) The tabular format doesn't work so well with long package names:

% popcon libdancer2-plugin-passphrase-perl
  PACKAGE VALUE
libdancer2-plugin-passphrase-perl 8

% popcon -v libdancer2-plugin-passphrase-perl
  PACKAGE VOTE   OLDRECENT NO FILES
libdancer2-plugin-passphrase-perl 2  5  1  0

2) Personally I'd find it nice to have to total number / the sum of
the 4 categories in the verbose output as well; what do you think?

available". Wireplumber is installed too, as I said it replaced the
pipewire-media-session last week and I suspect that may be the reason
why this bug appears.

Meanwhile, I've created an upstream issue here:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/640#note_1122799

Which caused an issue in wireplumber:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/wireplumber/-/issues/90

The bottom line is, that wireplumber does not support profile switching.
pipewire-session-manager did.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#997919: pipewire: Automatich profile selection for bluetooth headsets fails since 0.3.39

2021-10-27 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: pipewire
Version: 0.3.39-2
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: vent...@debian.org

Dear Maintainer,

since the upgrade from pipewire 0.3.38 to 0.3.39 the automatic profile
selection for my bluetooth headset does not work anymore. Since this upgrade
also included the change from pipewire-media-session to wireplumber it might
rather be related to that package. I noticed the
/etc/pipewire/media-session.d/bluez-monitor.conf is not present but I'm not
sure if it was, when pipewire-media-session was still installed, though.

So what is the problem? The headset has two modes: A2DP which you use when you
listen-only and the HSP/HFP mode which you need if you want to use the
headphone's microphone. Pipewire was able to switch back and forth between the
two modes automatically depending on whether a microphone input was requested
by an application, however since the last update it does not anymore and I
have to switch manually.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#906161: python-debianbts: get_bugs doesn't marshal usertags properly

Hi Julien,

thanks for the reply. Regarding your original bugreport, the usertags
parameter seems not to be documented in the wiki:
https://wiki.debian.org/DebbugsSoapInterface

Since it seems to work anyways for you, do you mind closing the

you for two years.

https://salsa.debian.org/debbugs-team/debbugs/-/blob/master/lib/Debbugs/Bugs.pm#L117

Hi,

marshaling for get_bugs' "usertags" param doesn't seem to work properly.
There's some special casing with _build_int_array_el for lists and
tuples but not for dicts. The below seems to make it work.

Bug#901803: python3-venv: Cannot create new virtual environments anymore

2018-06-18 Thread Bastian Venthur

Package: python3-venv
Version: 3.6.5-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Recently I cannot create new virtual environments anymore:

```bash
$ python3 -m venv venv
The virtual environment was not created successfully because ensurepip
is not
available.  On Debian/Ubuntu systems, you need to install the python3-venv
package using the following command.
apt-get install python3-venv
You may need to use sudo with that command.  After installing the
python3-venv
package, recreate your virtual environment.
Failing command: ['/tmp/venv/bin/python3', '-Im', 'ensurepip',
'--upgrade', '--default-pip']
```

However I have python3-venv installed:

```bash
$ dpkg -l python3-venv
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
Bug#891486: ITP: pipenv -- python development workflow for humans
2018-03-30 Thread Bastian Venthur
Dear ChangZhuo Chen,
I'm terribly sorry, I just realized that you've already filled an ITP
for pipenv while I worked on that package too and uploaded it into
unstable today.
It was my mistake, I didn't check for existing ITPs. I've prepared the
pipenv package last week by NMU'ing the outdated virtualenv-clone
package and porting it to Python3.
I'm maintaining the pipenv package under the umbrella of the Python
Applications Packaging Team and you'll find the git repository here:
https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/applications/pipenv
Please feel free to take over the package or co-maintain it with me and
the PAPT.
Have a nice weekend!
Bug#850753: fresh upstream (and ubuntu) is available (1.12.3)
2017-11-15 Thread Bastian Venthur
Hi,
Is it possible to have an updated version of docker.io in experimental?
The multi-stage builds introduced in 17.05 are a very important
improvement and working around this "missing" feature because Debian
ships an outdated docker is getting really nasty.
If there is something blocking a new release, I could also try to help.
Or maybe adding a few more people to the maintainers list in general
would be a good idea for such an important package?
Cheers,
Bastian
I have just updated runc to 1.0.0~rc4 thus updating docker.io became easier.
I can't find time to update docker.io as well in the near future. :-(
The reason Ubuntu is able to be more aggressive than Debian is that
they've made an explicit release exception for using Docker's
published "vendor" directory as-is rather than splitting it out into
individual packages (which is what causes so much headache for us in
Debian every new Docker release, and causes a greater number of issues
such as #835686).
Package: dpkg
--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Something is wrong with --print-avail. It used to give usefule package
information for installed packages, but now it seems to be broken:
$LANG=C dpkg --print-avail reportbug
dpkg-query: package 'reportbug' is not available
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
reportbug *is* installed on my system. However,
$ LANG=C dpkg --print-avail dpkg
works fine and shows the expected output. I'm using severity important,
as reportbug-ng needs --print-avail to get the package dependency
information, see below.
   Package name: wnpp
Version:
Upstream Author: Davis E. King <da...@dlib.net>
URL: http://dlib.net
License: Boost Software License
Description: Dlib is a general purpose cross platform open source
software library written in the C++ programming language. Its design is
heavily influenced by ideas from design by contract and component-based
software engineering. This means it is, first and foremost, a collection
of independent software components.
Since development began in 2002, dlib has grown to include a wide
variety of tools. In particular, it now contains software components for
dealing with networking, threads, graphical user interfaces, data
structures, linear algebra, machine learning, image processing, data
mining, XML and text parsing, numerical optimization, Bayesian networks,
and numerous other tasks. In recent years, much of the development has
been focused on creating a broad set of statistical machine learning tools
Please note, that this package also provides Python bindings.
Bug#799650: [python-pysimplesoap] Should decode base64 encoded strings
2015-09-21 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: python-pysimplesoap
Version: 1.16-1
Severity: normal
Affects: 799528
Hi,
this bugreport is a follow-up to #799528 (affecting reportbug and
reportbug-ng).
>>> import debianbts
>>> [bug] = debianbts.get_status(71)
>>> print bug.originator
Ik1pY2hhxYIgS3XFgmFjaCIgPG1pY2hhbGt1bGFjaEBnbWFpbC5jb20+
Compare with a non-unicode Name:
>>> [bug] = debianbts.get_status(11)
>>> print bug.originator
>>> # some correct name <em...@address.bar>
If you look at the XML that is sent, you'll note that in the first case
the originator is of type xsd:base64Binary, while the second one is of
type xsd:string. I think it would be sensible if simplesoap would
automatically decode base64 encoded strings. If it doesn't it is
impossible for other libraries to guess if the string was base64 encoded
or not, because in both cases the returned python type is .
(http://opencv.org/opencv-3-0-alpha.html), which is good news as there
should be no need to port the old Python2-only code.
Bug#732644: [python-debianbts]
2015-08-27 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: python-debianbts
Version: 2.0
The first step is done, I've just uploaded version 2.0 to experimental,
that migrated from SOAPpy to simplesoap. simplesoap is available for
Python3 as well. If the reportbug team does not find any serious issues
with python-debianbts 2.0 in experimental, we can start porting to Python3.
If you want to start porting to Python3 already, please base your fork
on the simplesoap branch, which is the one you'll find in experimental:
Bug#786119: marked as done (python-popcon: deprecation of python-support)
2015-08-24 Thread Bastian Venthur
Hi Matthias,
Thanks for fixing the Bug, however I'm not so happy with the procedure
of your NMU.
* It would have been nice if you'd have provided the patch in the
  bugtracker giving me some time to review and upload myself
* It would also have been nice if you uploaded the NMU to one of the
  delayed queues
as far as I know those are the best practices for NMUs we have right now
in Debian.
Instead, you immediately updated the package and even worse introduced a
new FTBFS bug: https://bugs.debian.org/796649, effectively forcing my
hand to take action immediately to clean up after you.
Cheers,
Bastian
Hi Yaroslav,
the gist of my bugreport was to have sklearn available for Python3 in
Debian. As sklearn officially supports Python3, It seems to me that the
reasons we don't have it yet are somewhat Debian specific which is a
reason more to leave this bug open until it is fixed.
So I'd like to leave that bugreport open until there is a Debian package
for Python3.
The first two bugs are already archived while the others are not.
Regarding the sorting according to bugnumbers, I think you have to
settle for either one, sortable according to bugnumber or severity. Do
you think the sorting according to bugnumber used more often than
sorting according severity? If yes, please let me know and we can maybe
work something out.
Bug#732644: [python-debianbts]
2014-05-28 Thread Bastian Venthur
python-soapy (and SOAP in general for that matter) is quite a beast.
Although it sounds a bit stupid, but if we don't find a suitable
alternative, it might indeed be easier to convert the BTS' API to
something more digestible. It would be preferable if the BTS would serve
JSON instead of SOAP-XML. JSON could be parsed within Python w/o any
external library.
Don Armstrong might accept patches for that kind of change, but writing
that part requires some serious Perl skills.
 Dear Maintainer,
 while looking at bug #586430 i found that the long text Using
 Reportbug-NG never got translated, no matter what. Looking at the code
 i noticed that this is because there is a trailing \ in
 src/rnghelpers.py that isn't present in the version between source tags
 in the .st files. Removing this char makes the strings identical and
 localization starts to work.
 The attached patch fixes the issue. Now one can run for example
 LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 reportbug-ng to get it in German.
Hi,
iceowl 24.0 and .1 make icedove extremely sluggish. Switching from the
not stop properly, the window closes but the process is still running
and you have to kill it. Disabling iceowl in the addons pane and
restarting from that pane has no effect. One has to start icedove in
2013-08-22 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: vim-scripts
Dear vim-scripts maintainer,
Please include the solarized colorscheme in vim-scripts.
  http://ethanschoonover.com/solarized
Solarized is a *very* popular colorscheme. And it is available for many
editors, including vim:
  https://github.com/altercation/vim-colors-solarized
It would be nice to have it packaged.
Thanks and cheers,
Bug#700003: [ipython] Resizing terminal garbles up the output
2013-02-07 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: ipython
Version: 0.13.1-2
Severity: normal
--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
When I resize my (gnome-)terminal, for example make it bigger while
ipython is running and do something like:
   import numpy as np
   np?
the screen is completely garbled up. And it is not possible to read the
help texts any more. As far as I know there is no way of restoring it to
a normal state.
With the normal python interpreter this problem does not exist.
Bug#700003: Acknowledgement ([ipython] Resizing terminal garbles up the output)
2013-02-07 Thread Bastian Venthur
I already found the solution. Apparently the lesspipe was enabled in my
.bashrc which caused the problem.
If I remember correctly this was the default behavior a while ago, but
currently the lesspipe is disabled in /etc/skel/.bashrc. So I assume
other users are also affected, but not all.
Hope that helps,
Bug#698142: general: gnome locks up (other CLI terminals still OK)
2013-01-14 Thread Bastian Venthur
I can confirm this bug, it has been present for the last few months. You
don't have to restart the computer though, it is sufficient to restart
gdm3 (i.e. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart). You will lose your currently
running gnome session, but don't need to restart.
Bastian
 After using Gnome for a few minutes it locks up. i.e. mouse pointer still
 Even the on-screen clock stops.
 ctrl-alt-F1 still gets me to CLI which still works normally.
 Can then reboot using ctrl-alt-delete but haven't found any other way to get
 Gnome back.
Bug#476106: byzanz: Please ship a .desktop file so that you show up on the menu
 Hello,
 i intend to adopt Byzanz and want to become the new maintainer. I guess
 the reply is far to late but nevertheless here are my thoughts on this
 bug report.
 Byzanz is implemented as a GNOME applet which actually means the only
 way to make it visible is to add the applet to the GNOME panel. I've
 described this procedure in the latest (still unreleased) version in
 README.Debian.
 At the moment byzanz isn't a graphical standalone application which you
 can launch from any kind of menu and where a .desktop file would be
 really useful indeed.
 I don't think this behaviour will change in the near future. Byzanz is
 an applet and a command line tool and the author of byzanz intends to
 keep it that simple. If this situation changed in
 the future i would add a .desktop file but for the moment i
 think this isn't necessary. Hence i set the severity of this bug to wishlist.
 Regards
 Markus Koschany
 Hi,
 The dpatch patch management system has been deprecated for some time. The
 Lintian currently flags use of dpatch packages as an error. The new 3.0
 packaging format is an improved version which, among other things, contains
 patch management built-in. For more information, see:
 http://wiki.debian.org/Projects/DebSrc3.0
 I had some free time; see attached patch to migrate to new package
 format. Note that all files in debian/patches/* are canocalized to
 *.patch.
 Let me know if there is anything that needs adjusting or if it is ok
 to upload this version in a NMU in case you are working on other
 issues needing attention.
 Thanks,
 Jari
Bug#658392: [gnome-terminal] F10 opens context menu (shouldn't do anything)
2012-02-02 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 3.2.1-2
Severity: normal
Hi,
since this morning, the gnome-terminal opens the context-menu of the
terminal when pressing F10. I have configured the terminal to *not* show
the menu when pressing F10 (the second option in the terminal's
shortcuts configuration menu). When turning this option on, it will show
the main menu of the terminal instead the context menu.
In the context-menu case F10 is still forwarded to the application
running in the terminal (e.g. midnight commander).
The correct behavior should be that F10 does nothing when not configured
to open the main menu, but forward F10 to the app running in the terminal.
Cheers,
Bastian
 Dear maintainer,
 I've prepared an NMU for python-popcon (versioned as 1.0+nmu1) and
 uploaded it to DELAYED/5. Please feel free to tell me if I should delay
 it longer.
Bug#618568: [ttf-inconsolata] bold font too wide in konsole
2011-03-16 Thread Bastian Venthur
Package: ttf-inconsolata
Version: 001.010-2
Severity: important
--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Hi,
a few days ago I noticed that the bold version of inconsolata is not as
wide as the normal version anymore. This makes it unusable with
applications like midnight commander where text is just truncated after
the correct width.
A small screenshot is attached. I don't see this bug with other fonts.
Cheers,
Bastian
