Bug#793670: mount: bad optical disk can place mount command into uninteruptable sleep

2015-07-26 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: mount
Version: 2.26.2-6
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,
I've found trying to mount an optical disk that turns out to be bad,
(this is the case I've encountered, may possibly happen with other media)
can cause the mount command to go into a noninteruptable sleep state,
waiting for response from the hardware that never arrives.
This latter can interfere in placing the computer in hibernate or
performing a clean shutdown.
My understanding is that the command could alternatively be implimented to
use a killable state, similar to the uninteruptable sleep,
except that the process can be killed.
If there are reason's the noninteruptable sleep must be used
most of the time, perhaps providing a switch to enforce
killable when the media is of unproven quality would be possible.
Thanks for any consideration.

 Hello,
I have just try with tcsh. It works fine also.
Please send a mail to 699...@bugs.debian.org and Cc to me, to explain how
 we can
exactly reproduce it. Its very important to find where is exactly the bug.
 Regards

 Denis Briand=20

To reproduce this:

While running lynx, with numbering of links and/or form fields activated:

1) Press the '0' (zero digit key)
2) Lynx then opens up a field at the bottom of the screen to
accept input - a link to either activate (a simple integer),
a link to go to (a simple integer followed by the letter 'g'),
or a page to go to (a simple integer followed by the letter 'p').
3) After typing 4 characters, it simply does not take any more input.
This limits the maximum link that can be activated by typing
in a link number to a maximum of ,
and a link number to go to without activating to 999 ('999g')
or a page number to go to 999 ('999p').

I've done some checking on various machines I have accounts on:

1) My desktop / Debian testing
   Lynx 2.8.9dev.1 (12 March 2014)
 problem found

2) A server I have / Debian stable
   Lynx 2.8.8dev.12 (22 February 2012)
 problem found

3) Larry Hart's machine / Debian testing
  Lynx 2.8.9dev.2 (21 December 2014)
   problem found

4) Account on Freeshell.de / Debian GNU/Linux 7
  Lynx 2.8.8dev.12 (22 February 2012)
8 character instead of 4 character limit found
(probably unnoticable for practical purposes, but present in a form)

5) Account on sdf.org / NetBSD
Lynx 2.8.7rel.2 (21 June 2010)
no apparent limit on number of characters typed in

6) Account on grex.net / OpenBSD 5.0-stable
 Lynx 2.8.7rel.2 (21 June 2010)
no apparent limit on number of characters to typed in

Bug#763618: lighttpd: Confusing CGI information on default start page

2014-10-01 Thread Dallas E. Legan II
Package: lighttpd
Version: 1.4.31-4+deb7u3
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

Apologies if I'm simply confused or not understanding
how things are done with lighttpd and there really is nothing to correct.

The start page clearly states that after running

#lighty-enable-mod cgi

CGI scripts are looked for in directory

/usr/lib/cgi-bin/

but after looking at error reports after activating debug,
and from what actually works, they are looked for in directory

/var/www/cgi-bin/

This wasted some hours of my time, and maybe other peoples.

It seems like the default start page should be corrected
(updated?).

Bug#750132: xine-console: Video driver 'none' fails for aaxine.

2014-06-01 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: xine-console
Version: 0.99.8-2
Severity: normal

'-V none' option fails when used with aaxine.
It's on the list of supported video output drivers ('--help'), and would
seem to be easy to support.
This is desirable since xine does support some relatively obscure
audio codecs, since fbxine is broken, it would be cool to use
aaxine as a substitute for such audio files.
The output for '--help' probably needs to be cleaned up for aaxine,
since aaxine isn't intended to support X as far as I know.

Bug#736319: get-flash-videos: The search function is broken

2014-01-22 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: get-flash-videos
Version: 1.25~git2012.06.27-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

The Google video search function was broken.
A blind friend was dependent on it as one tool for searching and listening to
videos.

This should include a script to apply 3 patches, to

/usr/bin/get_flash_videos
/usr/share/perl5/FlashVideos/Search.pm
and
/usr/share/perl5/FlashVideos/Site/Googlevideosearch.pm

These fix the search function, add 2 new paramters
(search results page and search results from the page to display),
and to document (in --help) the '--' end of input parameters.

Thanks if you can get this (or anything inspired by it or equivalent) into
the code base for this tool.

:EXPLINATION

Attached should be a .sh script to apply 3 patches to the Debian
installation of get-flash-videos.

These impliment my current best fix for the broken search function.
They also impliment -F (--first) and -P (--page) parameters
to the command line to display the the 'first' n (out of 100 results)
of the hits for a page, and to display the m page (1 page being 100 results).

For example

 -P 3 -F 30 .

would display the first 30 results of the 3rd page of results
(results 201-230).

I've tried to keep the case indifference for other command line settings.
(These 2 conflicted with -f and -p).

It will default to displaying all results for the first page of search results.

Also documented in the help listing is '--' for end of parameters
and start of search or URLs.

Bug#730148: dhelp: Doesn't seem to register ffmpeg-doc

2013-11-21 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: dhelp
Version: 0.6.21+nmu3
Severity: normal

Tried to get the ffmpeg-doc directory registered, and it doesn't.
I believe this to be the largest blob of html documenation on my system,
more than other html combined.
I tried the dhelp_parse -r ; dhelp -i, and also
the ruby script to force ffmpeg-doc to register, no change.
Apologies if I'm misunderstanding anything, or if this is really a bug
in the ffmpeg-doc package, but it would be nice to get ffmpeg-doc
integrated into this system.

Bug#719181: directvnc: Switching between consoles and back, need some way to refresh screen

2013-08-08 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: directvnc
Version: 0.7.7-1
Severity: important

When I switch to another console and back the screen seems to be mostly
black, with maybe an icon or something small displaying.
The program seems to still be running, but will refresh fragments
of the display in response to the pointer being moved around.
Of course if it simply snapped back to a complete display of
the remote session, that would be ideal, but a refresh in
response to moving back to the tty where its output is being displayed,
or in response to a hotkey (such as Ctl-L) would be usable.
Thanks for any advice, action, etc.

2013-03-12 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: linphone-nogtk
Version: 3.5.2-10
Severity: wishlist

I'm putting this as a wish list item because there may not be
a gracefull way to handle it, but perhaps some imaginative thinking
might overcome the issue.
Basicly, if you run it as advertised, linephonecsh doesn't seem
to have a way to recieve text chat messages.
If the server/slave linphonec --pipe session is run in a seperate
console (possibly launched with screen, openvt or tmux - in any case
not as advertised to run it :-) ), you can observe multiple copies
of the same text message dumped as they are recieved.
Off hand, I don't know any way to route these to the
(possibly arbitrary, and therefore not really predicatable)
console where linephonecsh is being run.
Maybe it would be good if linphonec had a switch that causes it to
save messages (a predefined number of the latest in a buffer)
until a request to dump them is recieved (a new command
for linephonecsh) ,
then it would know how to dispose of them as it
normally does for other commands. There may be better ways this could
be handled.
A brief note of this quirk might be good for the linphonecsh man page.
Maybe it is best to use a seperate xmpp/jabber client. :-)

I also noted that

linephonecsh generic ''

blocks, where it seems like it should just return to the prompt.

Thanks for any consideration and the work you are doing.

Bug#701880: linphone-nogtk: prefix= setting in proxy_ stanzas of .linphonerc seems to be completely ignored

2013-02-28 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: linphone-nogtk
Version: 3.5.2-10
Severity: normal

editing .linphonerc to have a 'prefix=...' associated with particular
proxy_ sections, as in some online documentation, fails.
Editing a prefix into the file, then starting linphonec,
it is simply gone, without a trace.
No prefix in the configuration/state file, none in the proxy show / list
output.
Fixing this could reduce tedium associated with use of various proxies,
allowing numbers to be used in a more standardized form and multiple
configurations for a single proxy server, each optimized for convienience
of particular services.

Bug#689757: apparently due to recent changes by youtube, quvi no longer works there

2012-10-05 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: quvi
Version: 0.4.2-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Apparently due to recent changes by Youtube, quvi no longer works
on that site. There probably are some other sites where it still
works, but the dominance of Youtube makes this a grave problem.
The programmers for quvi are probably working on a fix, since
I believe several other programs such as clive and cclive etc.
depend on quvi.
Probably the main things are to verify they are working on a fix,
and keep alert to when the put it out, so the quvi package etc.
can be updated when it is released.

Bug#689280: linphone-nogtk: playbackgain set volume resets to default after pausing

2012-09-30 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: linphone-nogtk

After adjusting the volume with 'playbackgain'
pausing the call resets the volume to the default.
It may be desirable to do this sometimes, but it
should be by deliberate decision and command,
not as a side effect of some other activity.

Bug#689281: linphone-nogtk: need some way to adjust the verbosity of proxy registration messages

2012-09-30 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: linphone-nogtk
Version: 3.5.2-10
Severity: wishlist

I think it would be good to be able to adjust the verbosity of registration
messages.
The messages announcing successful registration, after the first,
have little information content.
They disrupt the usability of the program by a blind friend,
and so could be considered an accessability issue.
Thanks for any consideration.

Bug#675544: iceweasel: apparent change in the meaning of -no-remote

2012-06-01 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: iceweasel
Version: 10.0.4esr-2
Severity: minor

Previously, when an instance of iceweasel was running,
issuing a command
iceweasel -no-remote .
meant to open a new instance, not to use the already running one.
Now it seems that this switch means that an instance of iceweasel
launched using it is not to accept 'remote' commands
such as iceweasel -new-tab | -new-windowhttp://
This caused me to open a bug report a few days ago,
that was quickly closed out after I managed to open some
new tabs/windows after a (compared to my normal proceedure)
convoluted launch of iceweasel.
Someone should verify this behaviour experimentally,
or by code inspection, or communication with the appropriate
programmer, and then tweak the documentation (including --help)
of -no-remote appropriately.
Thanks for any consideration, all past and future efforts,
and you patience with me. :-)

Bug#670103: googlecl: name collision with the surfraw package

2012-04-22 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: googlecl
Version: 0.9.13-1
Severity: minor

When both surfraw and googlecl are installed,
there can be a name collision of commands
if the surfraw 'elvi' directory is added to a
users PATH directory, both providing a 'google' command.
Personally, I've solved this with some aliases,
but a coordinated solution from the package managers
might be good.
Thanks for any consideration to this minor problem.

Bug#663418: cdrdao: would be good to have a switch to generate and use a WAV file instead of .bin

2012-03-10 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: cdrdao
Version: 1:1.2.3-0.2
Severity: wishlist

Although my root problem had been fixed by an update for cdrdao,
at one time it was not ripping CDs cleanly without static introduced,
and I had to verify with dd swb if=...bin | mplayer -
that this was a problem.
Although there may be reasons this doesn't make any sense,
it would make things simpler to verify this sort of thing
if cdrdao had a switch causing it to write out and use in the .toc file,
a straight ahead .wav file instead of the .bin format.
There might be other uses people could come up for with this .wav file,
making cdrdao more useful.cdparanoia can create such a .wav file,
but then you still have to run cdrdao to generate a toc file to go with it.
Thanks for any consideration, your efforts are appreciated.

Bug#627732: mimms: Would it be good to have a switch to dump out technical specs of stream?

2011-05-23 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: mimms
Version: 3.2.1-2
Severity: wishlist

I'm not sure if this is even meaningful in the mms: world,
maybe the specifications are always the same, I don't know,
but it might be useful to people like me who aren't too familiar
with mms: and related stream formats.
Any way a --identify/-i switch which would just dump out
the specifics of the stream, similar to ffprobe (which doesn't
handle mms:), mkvmerge --identify, file etc.
Perhaps a validate switch, to sample enough of the stream
to verify that it is valid mms:, with appropriate return code.
If this in invariant on valid mms: and related, then the
--identify could dump out some hard coded info on the format,
otherwise real technical specs of the stream in question.
This was spurred on by a friend who didn't want to capture
the whole stream, but encode and save the audio on the fly direct to mp3.
I was trying to analyze the stream to find out if it was simply a
question of dumping the raw audio to a file or actual encoding.
I ended up mimms -vt 1 mms:// and analyzing the
captured file.
Thanks for any consideration, and your work on this fine package.

Bug#607062: simpleopal: explicitly -s 'first sound card' doesn't seem to work

2010-12-14 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: simpleopal
Version: 3.6.8~dfsg-2
Severity: normal

With no -s , it defaults to the USB (second) sound card,
which it successfully uses.
Also if -s USB AUDIOis specified sound works.
It also works with the 2nd card if -s /dev/dsp1 is specified.
If -s 'Intel 82801DB-ICH4' is explicitly specified, the primary (PCI)
soundcard most applications default to using, it complains:

.
  0:18.216 Pool:0xb6782b70 sound_alsa.cxx(238) ALSAOpen
Failed
  0:18.220 Pool:0xb6782b70 pcss.cxx(290) PCSSCould

.

and there is no sound.
-s /dev/dsp causes a similar error.
Only if -s 'Default' is specified does it use the main soundcard,
as would be expected.
This is useable once figured out, but it seems confusing, and led
to wasting much time trying to get a working configuration.
At the least, documenting this and a suggestion to try using
-s Default setting from the start would seem good.
Thanks for any consideration, and working on this package!

Bug#605000: dtmfdial: doesn't seem to be able to share soundcard with other apps

2010-11-25 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: dtmfdial
Version: 0.2+1-2
Severity: normal

I have two soundcards, dtmfdial does not seem to work
with the default, but does with a usb outgboard card.
It reports '$/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy',
but several other apps can deal with this situation.
I can see that it might be useful for this to happen to produce
'pure', clean dialtones, but I envisioned using it with some
telephony/voip applications.
As it is, I may have to fool around with holding a headphone up
to a mic to get the desired result.
Unless there is some other reason for this (permissions etc.,
(I did try changing them and a few other things))
I would suggest a switch to force it to ignore the condition
that causes the problem and use the indicated or default soundcard
whether it is already in use or not.
Thanks for any consideration.

Bug#603959: libsvga1: On installation, should check and configure for frame buffer

2010-11-18 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: libsvga1
Version: 1:1.4.3-29
Severity: important

I installed in a different order, so perhaps this is taken care of.
Apologies if so.
I experienced problems using svga packages after moving to use of a
frame buffer. Many were cleared up forcing frame buffer usage
via the configuration file.
My suggestion, if not already implimented, is that when libsvga1
is installed, a check should be made for the presence of a frame buffer
device, and if present, the line for the frame buffer device / chip set
in /etc/vga/libvga.config should be uncommented.
This doesn't solve all svga/fbdev problems, but it made
a couple of usefull utilities, zgv and bmv usable for me,
and maybe it can save some other users grief, and allow them to get
use out of svga tools.

Bug#603963: Patch: addaptation of fimgs script, zgs, that uses zgv instead to view pdf etc.

2010-11-18 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: zgv

Severity: wishlist

Below is an adaptation of the fimgs script, zgs, to use zgv in compliment
of fim/fbi to view pdf, ps etc., allowing use of unique zgv features such
as generation/viewing/selection via thumbnails.
The script is not perfect right now, could use a bit of cleanup,
but is usable. Thanks for any feedback/consideration.

Bug#561740: zgv: suggestion for installation

2010-11-18 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: zgv
Version: 5.9-2+b1
Severity: normal

I submitted a suggestion for libsvga1 that when installed,
a check be made to see if a framebuffer device was present,
and /etc/vga/libvga.config be edited to uncomment the

chipset FBDEV

line to make this the default when run on machines with a framebuffer.
It might be good to double check that with this package (and maybe also
for bmv, another program that runs well with libsvga1/fb) and make
(or suggest) that change.
Also if a framebuffer is identified on the system, also
drop (or suggest putting) in

force-viewer-8bit on

into the /etc/zgv file.

Thanks for any consideration, just hoping to save others some grief.

Bug#603644: lynx-cur: Inclusion of form../form... elements in LIST/ADDRLIST command output

2010-11-15 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: lynx-cur
Version: 2.8.8dev.1-1
Severity: wishlist

The LIST and ADDRLIST commands currently include links and form
elements, but no FORM... and /FORM html elements.
Inclusion of these would create a pure, functinal DOM (Document Object Model)
rendering of a web page, that could be useful for simplifying
lynx automation via expect, kermit, etc., and also
perhaps for accessability/usability purposes.
It might be implimented as a FORMLIST command,
but there might be other, better ideas.
Thanks for any consideration.

Bug#603645: lynx-cur: needs a command to force submission of cgi forms like w3m and elinks have

2010-11-15 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: lynx-cur
Version: 2.8.8dev.1-1
Severity: wishlist

Submission of HTML CGI forms is too important to leave to the
whim of web page designers and scripters, who too often
have no knowledge of writing for web page accessability/usability,
and seem to feel that javascript should be required for
a simple form submission.
Both w3m and elinks have provission to force submission
of CGI forms bypassing any poorly implimented mechanism
of the page's creators.
Lynx should have the same.
In w3m's case, a 'SUBMIT' command can be invoked
after hitting the ':' key, or mapped directly to a key for invocation.
elinks brings up a menu after filling out a field and hitting
return, allowing submission no matter how poorly the
page creators design is.
The w3m paradigm seems most appropriate to me.

Bug#603646: lynx-cur: External menu could be cleaner, more like download or print menus

2010-11-15 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: lynx-cur
Version: 2.8.8dev.1-1
Severity: wishlist

It would be good if the menu pulled up when externals
was briefer, more like the download or print menus.
Currently it displays the full commands and the URL involved
in each command.
I know one blind friend who is confused
by this display, especially considering the mess/complexity
of many of the URLs you might call an external on.
Perhaps provision for a brief description, and allocation
to display the URL at the top, bottom or not all would be ideal.
Perhaps some switch to abbreviate the URL would be good,
specifiy how many characters to show.
This can be achieved by handling all externals via a single
script, typically a shell script, but this seems beyond
the ability of a lot of people, and may be handling
the configuration file is all that can be expected of them.
Thanks for any consideration, even if it just to forward
this to Thomas Dickey!

Bug#597805: tsocks: Would be good to have a CLI switch to export LD_PRELOAD

Bug#565807: iceweasel: -new-tab/-new-window not properly documented in man page / -help output

2010-01-18 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.5.5-1
Severity: minor

The -new-tab switch really should have a seperate entry
in the man page to help draw attention to it's existence.
Both -new-tab and -new-window switches should be listed
as part of the output for -help, to make people aware
of their existence, so they can use them.
(I seem to recall at one time they were part of -h output, but
I may be wrong about that.)
These have accessability/usability implications
for people who may want to minimize use of the
GUI (for example due to preferences of screen reader technology
for the visually impaired.), increasing interoperability
with other software.
As a use case someone passing a URL from a text mode browser
to Firefox when Iceweasels javascript or multimedia capabilities
might be desired for special web pages, but other factors
give a preference to the text mode browser as much as possible.

Bug#565810: iceweasel: Command to execute when closing tab/window along with -new-tab/-new-window

2010-01-18 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.5.5-1
Severity: wishlist

When giving the -new-tab or -new-window switches on the
command line to start iceweasel/firefox, it would
be cool if you could specify a command to execute when
the window/tab closes. My current typical use would
be 'chvt ...' to flip back to the console where
the tab/window was started from.

Bug#563471: wodim: -swab does not work in -dao mode

2010-01-02 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: wodim
Version: 9:1.1.10-1
Severity: normal

I can generate a .bin file with

cdparanoia -vr 1-aaa.bin
(or cdrdao read-cd --datafile aaa.bin aaa.toc
leaving out the --swap below when writing as below - this is another story)

(note -r switch there)

and a cue file with

cdrdao read-tocaaa.toc
toc2cue aaa.tocaaa.cue

cdrdao write --swap aaa.toc

generates an audio cd that plays fine, no problem.

however

wodim -dao -swabcuefile=aaa.cue

produces only noise.

Running the aaa.bin through
a brief script to swap the bytes,
(probably could have been done with dd swab if=... of=...)
and retrying, the cd plays fine.

mplayer -demuxer rawaudio aaa.bin

with the first aaa.bin plays fine,
allowing verification of a clean read off the original audio cd,
without generating another .bin file,
or piping dd output to mplayer.
(I'm filing another report of some kind with mplayer,
as I interpret it
mplayer -demuxer rawaudio -format s16be -af format=s16le aaa.bin
should play the a file generated by
cdparanoia -vp 1- aaa.bin
(note -p instead of -r)
but only gets noise - it only plays the one from cdparanoia -vr ...
without the -format ... -af ... parameters)

Anyway, this seems to indicate to me -swab should work with wodim -dao,
like --swap does with cdrdao.
It will allow wodim to work with a slightly different input format.

Thanks for any consideration given to this!

Dallas E. Legan II

Bug#563218: wget: odometer style progress display would be good, increase accessiblity

2009-12-31 Thread Dallas E. Legan
Package: wget
Version: 1.12-1.1
Severity: wishlist

It would be good if wget had a progress display option
that simply refreshed the number of bytes, kb or whatever,
to that point and showed the total expected.
I think of this as an odometer style dislay,
and it is actually implimented in the Lynx browser
when downloading from an interactive session,
and the feature dialed in the configuration.
I have a blind friend who feels this would
be his prefrered display method when using wget
if it was available - he likes it in Lynx.
C-Kermit's 'set transfer display crt' mode
is very similar, but it shows perhaps a bit more info than
he would desire - perhaps some range of configurability would
be good, icing on the cake.
