Bug#782066: linux-image-3.16.0-4-powerpc: Messed up colors with KMS disabled in PowerPC

2016-04-24 Thread Dan DeVoto
My iBook's logic board died so I can't test, but I solved this issue by
removing radeonfb from fbdev-blacklist.conf, adding radeonfb to /etc/modules,
and defining a default depth in xorg.conf. So, maybe not a bug -- it just
requires some work ;)

 Dan,

What should we do with this bug report ? Is this still

Bug#798102: linux-image-4.1.0-2-powerpc: Lots of kworker activity after wake from hibernate on Powerbook

2015-09-05 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.1.6-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After waking from hibernate, I get lots of kworker activity that makes my
fans kick in. Top shows a process called kworker/0:3 always active using
around 3% cpu, and Powertop shows a process using 320 ms/s with the Category
Kwork and the Description ams_worker (Powertop also shows about 33% cpu usage).
I assume ams stands for Apple Motion Sensor, and when I unload the module
"ams" everything returns to normal and my fans quiet down.

This is on an aluminum Powerbook (PowerBook5,6).

lspci -nn, lspci -v, and dmesg are below.

Regards,

Dan

Dear Maintainer,

This bug didn't exist for me in 31.8.0, but now I see it in 38.2.1. I'm not
sure about the versions in between. I created a fresh profile and it didn't
fix it. Clicking Customize opens a blank page, and entering
about:customizing in the address bar also opens a blank page.

Bug#757015: iceweasel: Bookmark folders still broken

2015-08-16 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: iceweasel
Version: 38.2.0esr-1~stretch
Followup-For: Bug #757015

Dear Maintainer,

I can confirm this bug persists in Testing. Whether I sync with Firefox Sync
or import bookmarks manually from an html file, my bookmark folders don't
appear in the bookmarks menu. They do, however, show up in the Bookmarks
Library, though they don't have folder icons next to them.

The bookmarks still exist inside the folders when I click on them in the
Library, and I can still access them with auto-complete in the address bar,
just not through the menu.

Do any maintaners know why powerpc users are seemingly the only ones hit by
this bug?

Regards,

Dan

Bug#795509: pbbuttonsd: Slow fading with brightness keys

2015-08-14 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: pbbuttonsd
Version: 0.8.1a-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I'm getting a very slow fading effect when I press the
brightness keys, and when I press them several times in a
row it takes a few seconds for the screen to fully fade to
off or full brightness depending on which key I pressed.
During this several seconds fading, I can't stop it with
further key presses and have to wait till the end before
I can attempt to adjust the brightness again.

This is on an aluminum Powerbook running testing.

Bug#795498: pbbuttonsd: Fails to start on boot

2015-08-14 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: pbbuttonsd
Version: 0.8.1a-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Pbbuttonsd fails to autostart when booting up. This happens on
both a G3 iBook running stable and aluminum Powerbook running
testing, and it occurs with both 0.7.9-7 and 0.8.1a-1. When I run
systemctl status pbbuttonsd I get:

● pbbuttonsd.service - LSB: handle special hotkeys of Apple computers
   Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/pbbuttonsd)
Active: active (exited) since Fri 2015-08-14 10:21:16 PDT; 2min 53s ago
  Process: 626 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/pbbuttonsd start (code=exited, status=0/SU$

Then when I restart pbbuttonsd, all the hotkeys now work and
systemctl status pbbuttonsd gives me:

● pbbuttonsd.service - LSB: handle special hotkeys of Apple computers
   Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/pbbuttonsd)
Active: active (running) since Fri 2015-08-14 10:25:02 PDT; 9s ago
  Process: 1577 ExecStop=/etc/init.d/pbbuttonsd stop (code=exited, status=0/SUC$
  Process: 1581 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/pbbuttonsd start (code=exited, status=0/S$
   CGroup: /system.slice/pbbuttonsd.service
   └─1587 /usr/bin/pbbuttonsd --configfile=/etc/pbbuttonsd.cnf -d

However, it still doesn't autostart on reboot, and systemctl
enable pbbuttonsd doesn't help, either.

I'm not sure this is relevant, but when I upgraded to both the
testing and experimental versions, aptitude left these warnings:

Setting up pbbuttonsd (0.8.1a-1) ...

Bug#795509: pbbuttonsd: Slow fading with brightness keys

2015-08-14 Thread Dan DeVoto
I should add, at first I didn't see this problem on my G3 iBook, but
then I remembered I had KMS/radeon disabled because it gave me
a blank screen. So I enabled KMS/radeon, and working blindly I can
see the same slow-motion fading effect on the iBook.

Dan

Bug#714345: New patch appears to fix this.

2015-05-09 Thread Dan DeVoto
Hi,

The patch posted here:

https://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2015/05/msg00031.html

appears to fix this bug. As soon as it's upstreamed into the kernel, this bug
report can probably be closed.

Bug#782066: linux-image-3.16.0-4-powerpc: Messed up colors with KMS disabled in PowerPC

2015-04-09 Thread Dan DeVoto
Hi,

I succeeded in loading radeonfb by removing it from
/etc/modprobe.d/fbdev-bloacklist.conf, and I also had to turn off the open
firmware framebuffer with the boot parameter video=offb:off. However, I'm
now stuck in 8-bit colors. I tried adding the boot parameter that worked with
the
previous kernel, video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60, but it had no effect. I
also added radeonfb mode_option=1024x768-32@60 to /etc/modules and
/etc/initramfs-tools/modules and ran # update-initramfs -u, but I'm still
getting
8-bit colors.

Is there anything else I can try?

Is the bug regarding KMS on this system recorded on the
 upstream bug tracker (https://bugs.freedesktop.org)?

No, I will do that.

Regards,

Dan

Bug#782066: linux-image-3.16.0-4-powerpc: Messed up colors with KMS disabled in PowerPC

2015-04-07 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.7-ckt7-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

With the boot parameters radeon.modeset=0 video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60, I
get messed up, psychadelic colors. My previous kernel, 3.16-2, doesn't
have this problem. Booting into the older kernel with the same boot
parameters displays the desktop normally.

I need to disable KMS with radeon.modeset=0 because KMS enabled gives my
g3 iBook a black screen.

Dmesg and Xorg log below.

Thanks,

Dan

Bug#770669: clementine: Crashes on playing music files

2014-12-15 Thread Dan DeVoto
Hi,

I updated everything and this bug still exists. Other gstreamer apps,
including Rhythmbox,
Banshee, and gst123 all play the files fine. I don't have any Linux systems on
non-
powerpc hardware, but on all three of my powerpc Macs I get this crash. It
makes me
wonder of this is a powerpc-only bug.

One odd thing--all of my gstreamer apps were crashing earlier until I removed
gstreamer1.0-alsa:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=770679

Without gstreamer1.0-alsa they play fine, except for Clementine which still
gives the
same crash as before.

Regards,

Dan

Bug#773135: libgtk-3-0: Oversized icons with SVG icon themes

2014-12-14 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: libgtk-3-0
Version: 3.14.5-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Using Openbox, many GTK3 apps (Audacious, Gufw, Transmission) have extremely
oversized icons when I use an SVG icon theme like MeliaeSVG. This includes
oversized menu and toolbar icons. Switching to a non-SVG theme restores
icons to their normal size.

Dan

Bug#772504: mouseemu: breaks xmodmap key swapping

2014-12-07 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: mouseemu
Version: 0.15-10
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I use xmodmap to swap my Mac's control and Apple keys, but when I restart
the mouseemu daemon it breaks my xmodmap settings and the control and Apple
keys revert. sudo /etc/init.d/mouseemu stop doesn't effect xmodmap, only
start and restart. Running mouseemu as a simple command with options
also breaks it. I have xmodmap .Xmodmap in my autostart file, so I
guess the mouseemu daemon loads before the autostart file on boot, and that's
why everything starts up okay.

The simple workaround is to rerun xmodmap .Xmodmap.

Bug#770283: xfburn crashes when adding Data Composition files

2014-12-06 Thread Dan DeVoto
I switched to a non-murrine theme and still got the same crash. The valgrind
output
is below. I subsequently switched from my Openbox session to an XFCE session
and
got the same crash, too. I don't intend to burn a ton of discs with this
machine, so
I can adapt to burn's command line interface. A terminal's progress bar is much
cooler, anyway :)

Do i get it right that this is 32 bit code ?

Yes.

Bug#771733: iceweasel: crashes when loading Iceweasel Start Page

2014-12-01 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: iceweasel
Version: 31.2.0esr-3

Dear Maintainer,

On a fresh install, Iceweasel crashes on start-up when loading the start page.
I can start in safe mode and disable the start page in preferences, and then
use Iceweasel with no problems. Here's the backtrace:

Bug#771040: installation-reports: Messes up Mac OS 9 driver partitions

2014-11-26 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Installation was flawless, except the installer somehow makes my Mac
OS 9 partition unbootable. This can be fixed by booting from an OS 9
install CD, running Drive Setup, and updating the drivers. This
appears to fix the driver partitions, but obviously this shouldn't
happen in the first place.

Regards,

Dan

Bug#770676: quodlibet: Playback error with audio equalizer

2014-11-23 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: quodlibet
Version: 3.2.2-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When I attempt to play a song with the equalizer plugin enabled, I get a
popup message saying, Playback Error: Could not create GStreamer Pipeline.
In the terminal output, all it had was:

W: Linking the GStreamer pipeline failed
W: Could not create GStreamer pipeline

Playback without the equalizer enabled is fine.

Regards,

Dan

Bug#770679: gstreamer1.0-alsa crashes multiple apps

2014-11-23 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: gstreamer1.0-alsa
Version: 1.4.4-2

When I have gstreamer1.0-alsa installed on my system, every gstreamer audio
app I have crashes when attempting to play a file. Removing gstreamer1.0-alsa
fixes the problem. Here are a couple of backtraces, first Rhythmbox and then

Bug#770669: clementine: Crashes on playing music files

2014-11-22 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: clementine
Version: 1.2.3+dfsg-2+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When I try to play a music file (I've tried both mp3 and ogg) Clementine
quits with a seg fault. I'm using Openbox and ALSA, no pulseaudio, and
the crash happens whether I have the ouput plugin in Preferences/Playback as
Choose automatically or Audio sink (ALSA). Here's the backtrace:

Bug#770430: menu: Fails to launch qtconfig

2014-11-21 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: menu
Version: 2.1.47
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Using Openbox 3.5.2-8, when I attempt to launch qt4-qtconfig from the
Openbox menu (under Debian -- Applications -- System -- Administration--
QtConfig) I get the following popup error:

Failed to execute child process /usr/lib/*/qt4/bin/qtconfig (No such file
or directory).

Launching qtconfig from the command line or from launchers like Kupfer works
fine.

Dan

Version: 1.1.9-1

Dear Maintainer,

When I copy a password in KeepassX, the password is supposed to disappear
from the clipboard after about 10 seconds, and with Parcellite it does.
However, Parcellite still displays the password in its system tray menu.

The password should disappear from the menu as well.

Bug#680389: gvfs afp

2014-03-13 Thread Dan DeVoto
Hi,

I upgraded to 1.19.90-1 in experimental and found the same results, 100% cpu
after terminating the connection on the server side.

Regards,

Dan

 Hello Dan!

Thanks for your followup on the gvfs bug.

If you have things set up to test reproducing this, could
 you please
also try the (much more recent) gvfs version from Debian
 Experimental?
It contains a few minor related fixes. Maybe none of them
 helps
out with this bug, but it's always nice to verify before
 going bug-hunting.

 Thanks,
 Andreas Henriksson

Bug#680389: gvfsd-afp consumes lot of cpu

2014-03-12 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: gvfs
Version: 1.16.3-2
Followup-For: Bug #680389

Dear Maintainer,

Same bug in Jessie: gvfsd-afp-browse shoots to 100% cpu on the client side
(iBook G3) when I disconnect the afp server on my OS X Tiger machine.
Additionally, when I have an afp volume mounted on the client side, both
gvfsd-afp and gvfsd-afp-browse shoot to maximum cpu after disconnecting the afp
server.

Regards,

Dan

Bug#728936: Fwd: Bug#728936 - Has anyone succeeded in installing Jessie on PowerPC?

2013-12-08 Thread Dan DeVoto
I can confirm this bug. The keyboard is functional on the first boot screen,
but when it gets to the Choose a language screen, the keyboard no longer
works. I tested this on a Powerbook5,6 (with its built-in keyboard) and a
PowerMac3,1 (with an external Macally keyboard). Interestingly, the keyboard
on my dual USB iBook (Powerbook4,3) worked fine, though when I plugged in an
external keyboard, that again failed.

Oh, and this was with the December 8th nightly build.

Bug#715546: linux-image-3.9-1-powerpc: Suspend fails on iBook G3 Dual USB PowerPC

2013-07-10 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.9.8-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

pm-suspend results in black screen (with backlight still on) and no hard drive
spin down. Everything about the system appears frozen except the caps lock key
which lights when pressed, and the screen brightness keys which also work. The
symptoms are the same when I try to put it to sleep by closing the lid.

With the 3.2 kernel, suspend worked fine.

Here are the lines in kern.log when attempting suspend:

Bug#692351: kupfer: Disabling Start automatically on login doesn't work

2012-11-24 Thread Dan DeVoto
Actually, I'm using Openbox. But I also have LXDE and Xfce installed, and in
Xfce I noticed that if I go to the settings menu and uncheck Kupfer in Session
and Startup (under the Application Autostart tab), then Kupfer won't autostart
when I login to Openbox or LXDE even if Kupfer's own preferences are set to
Start automatically on login. However, when I uncheck Kupfer's autostart
option in LXDE's Desktop Session Settings, it will still autostart in Openbox.
The only thing that prevents it from autostarting in Openbox is if autostart is
disabled from Xfce's session manager (it makes no difference what Kupfer's own
autostart option is).

There's nothing related to Kupfer in my Openbox autostart file, and I tried
something similar to what you asked below, only for Xfce's settings, and
turning on (or off) Kupfer's Start automatically on login option didn't
change the status in the Xfce preference.

To sum up briefly, Kupfer's own setting Start automatically on login doesn't
work for me. The only thing that disables autostart in Openbox is Xfce's
Session and Startup tool from within an Xfce session.

Regards,

Dan

Bug#693513: laptop-mode-tools: Hangs on boot and restart

2012-11-17 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: laptop-mode-tools
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I installed pbbuttonsd which also installed ethtool, laptop-mode-tools, and
sdparm as dependencies. When I attempted to reboot, the output console hung
on [} Deconfiguring network interfaces... for several minutes. When I
did a hard boot, it got me to the lightdm screen, but after logging in almost
everything was broken. Then I switched to a console with ctl+alt+F1, and the
output was hung on [] Enabling laptop mode...Bus error with a blinking
cursor on the next line. I couldn't log into any other console because there
was no login line, just a blank cursor. Returning to a very broken X, I
could open an xterm window, but sudo shutdown now -r did nothing but return
a blank cursor.

The only way out was to hard boot into single user mode and do an aptitude
purge of the packages I just installed. I uninstalled pbbuttonsd, ethtool,
and sdparm first and still had the same symptoms. It was only when I
uninstalled laptop-mode-tools that everything worked again as before.

To reiterate, the startup console at ctl+alt+F1 hangs on [] Enabling
laptop mode...Bus error, and when I try to reboot via the restart menu in

Bug#680389: gvfs-backends: 100% cpu after disconnecting

2012-11-17 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: gvfs-backends
Version: 1.12.3-1+b1
Followup-For: Bug #680389

Dear Maintainer,

I experience this bug when connected to a local AFP server (running OS X
Tiger). As a client on Debian, I can connect and everything works fine until
I disconnect the network on the server side. Then Debian's cpu shoots up to
100% and top reveals the process is gvfsd-afp-browse. I've repeated it
several times and it didn't matter whether the network volumes were still
mounted on my Debian desktop or unmounted. The only solution was to kill the
process.

Regards,

Dan

Dear Maintainer,

In Kupfer's preferences, unchecking Start automatically on login does

Opening the preferences again shows the check box remains unchecked. I tried
checking the box, restarting, then unchecking it again and restarting, but
Kupfer still remains active.

Bug#691994: artha: Artha crashes on certain verbs ending in ing

2012-10-31 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: artha
Version: 1.0.2-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Artha crashes with a segmentation fault when looking up some verbs ending in
ing. For example, verbs ending in ie and replaced with ing like tying,
lying, and vying. Also, verbs with a second consonant added like swimming and
sitting. Falling and pulling also crash. And for some reason the word
matter crashes, though I couldn't find similar words that also crashed it.
All these words crash whether they're looked up from highlighted text in
another window, they're typed manually in Artha, or if they're double clicked
within a definition in Artha.

Dan

it's fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs OFfb ATY,Fall_A - removing
generic driver).

Just to be clear about the symptoms, the screen is still lit, it's just colored
black and there's nothing visible. Then when X starts in the boot process, the
screen goes dark for a second as if it's powered off, then comes on again to a
lit but black screen, then after another second switches to a slightly lower
brightness level. When I switch to a console, something similar happens.
Also, I can change the brightness of the black screen with the iBook's
brightness keys.

I added video=offb:off to video=radeonfb:off like you suggested but got the
same result. I also added video=1024x768-24@60, but that made no difference
either.

In better news, I was able to work blindly and bring up an xterm window and
typed glxinfo | grep render ~/glxinfo.txt and then boot with no yaboot
parameters to get back into a GUI, where the content of glxinfo.txt was:

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R100 (RV100 4C59) PowerPC NO-TCL DRI2

So there's that:)

Note that I meant using video=radeonfb:off instead of
radeon.modeset=0, to allow radeon KMS to initialize.
 However, note that
KMS doesn't support suspend/resume on PowerPC laptops yet.

Using video=radeonfb:off instead of radeon.modeset=0 resulted in a black
screen, even when switching to a console. I had to boot from an install cd in
rescue mode to revert. Using video=ofonly resulted in the same thing. I also
tried video=offb:off and booted to a GUI, but there was still no hardware
acceleration. If it's at all relevant, here is the output of cat /proc/fb
(after removing yaboot parameters):

0 ATI Radeon 4c59

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks,

Dan

Can you get the corresponding dmesg output, e.g. via ssh or
 from /var/log/kern.log?

Doesn't yaboot allow specifying kernel command line parameters at its
prompt, so you don't have to make them permanent for testing?

Yes, you're correct. Thanks for the timesaver. Also, adding radeon.agpmode=-1
made no difference.

Below is dmesg output with video=radeonfb:off in the kernel command line:

You should probably disable KMS with radeon.modeset=0 on the kernel
command line. You can also disable radeonfb with video=radeonfb:off, but
KMS may not work very well with your card.

Hi,

After adding radeon.modeset=0 to my bootloader, still no change with glxinfo:

dan@icebook:~$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,

Though the error messages in my Xorg.0.log file are different, specifically:

[39.505] (EE) AIGLX error: radeon does not export required DRI extension
[39.506] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

Also, adding video=radeonfb:off did nothing but make my screen darker and
disable my brightness hotkeys, and there was no change in the error messages,
so I removed the line. The following is my entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log (with
only radeon.modeset=0 in my yaboot.conf file):

Bug#683796: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: No 3D acceleration in iBook2 powerpc

2012-08-03 Thread Dan DeVoto
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Version: 1:6.14.4-5
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

In order to get 3D acceleration in Squeeze, I had to install the radeon driver
from firmware-linux-nonfree. However, in Wheezy after installing
firmware-linux-nonfree I still get no 3D.

$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,

Thanks,

Dan
