Bug#1043544: qemu kvm rtl8139 interface breaks with linux-image-5.10.0-24-amd64
Package: linux-image-amd64 Version: linux-image-5.10.0-24-amd64 Upon updating a server hosting qemu-system-x86_64 / kvm virtual machines (VMs) from linux-image-5.10.0-23-amd64 to linux-image-5.10.0-24-amd64 and rebooting, all VM OSes saw the rtl8139 network interface as unplugged (and the network link down). Trying to change the interface state via the QEMU monitor command "set_link off" then "set_link on" runs, but the VM OS still sees the interface as unplugged. Rebooting the host OS or VMs had no effect. The rtl8139 interfaces for the VMs work fine booting using earlier kernel versions. Server info: CPU: AMD EPYC 7282 16-Core Processor microcode: microcode updated early to new patch_level=0x0830107a The same problem was not observed on an Intel server using virtio network interfaces with the same kernel update. I suspect the problem may be caused by the patches for INCEPTION because the EPYC 7282 processor is affected by that (and Zenbleed), but that may be incorrect.
Bug#904717: rosegarden "Tie Notes at Barlines" has no effect on some imported MIDI
Package: rosegarden Version: 1:16.06-1+b1 After opening or importing some midi files, if there are tracks with notes that span barlines (e.g. a half-note on beat 4 of a 4/4 bar), selecting the note(s) and executing the command: Adjust -> Notes -> Tie Notes at Barlines has no effect. It is expected that the note would be split into shorter, tied notes, in accordance with the documentation (e.g. two tied quarter-notes in the example above; see "Splitting very long notes" at https://rosegardenmusic.com/wiki/doc:notation-en). Interestingly, if the long note is deleted and a note of equal duration is inserted in place of it, the inserted note can then be split properly using "Tie Notes at Barlines". Example MIDI files that exhibit this bug (look for red barlines, indicating an improper number of beats in the bar): https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a0/Bass_sample.mid http://scores.ccarh.org/corelli/op2/corelli-op2n01-1.mid (see tracks 5 and 6), https://imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/186184 This bug was not present in Rosegarden 14.02, but is present in Rosegarden 15.10 in other distributions (as well as 16.06, of course in Debian). Sometimes it appears that "Fix Note Quantization" fixes the notation (many red bar lines disappear), but it actually shortens the notes spanning the barlines to do this, instead of adding ties across barlines and preserving the correct note durations. The change that caused this bug may be in the makeThisNoteViable function of src/base/SegmentNotationHelper.cpp, where similar bugs have been caused in the past. Thanks for your attention in fixing this.

Bug#749451: libgtk-3-dev introduces dependency on C++ library
Thanks for the speedy reply (and all the work on the GTK packages). I see what you described is correct: the Gtk3 binaries don't depend on libstdc++; it is only the developer package which requires the standard c++ library. Looking at the dependencies, I think the actual problem for my situation is that this introduces a dependency on g++ (so I probably should have reported it thus instead). As for a concrete situation, I run Debian on a (highly) portable, low power netbook in addition to my desktop system (I reported from my desktop, so that is where the uname is from, sorry). There is no big problem on my desktop with adding g++, etc. but my netbook is quite resource constrained (i.e. I think I have more storage on my Raspberry Pi). I don't use C++, just straight C, so I have had no need to install C++ until I looked at installing gtk-3-dev to get some sweet GUI. I don't think my system is so constrained I couldn't install g++, but it is constrained enough that I'd rather not if I don't really need it. I generally think that the Debian policy of avoiding embedded libraries is wise. It is a good idea not to have who knows how many copies of a library floating around / bloating a system, and PCRE, although small, seems to be the kind of library that could have some serious security implications. That said, your proposed solution of splitting libpcre3-dev into C and C++ parts sounds like a better solution to me. Bug#749451: libgtk-3-dev introduces dependency on C++ library
Package: libgtk-3-dev Version: 3.4.2-7 Summary: libgtk-3-dev introduces dependency on C++ (as opposed to just C) library. Details: libgtk-3-dev depends on libglib2.0-dev, which depends on libpcre3-dev. However, libpcre3-dev depends on libpcrecpp0, which introduces dependencies on C++ libraries (libstdc++). Possible solution: According to the documentation at https://developer.gnome.org/glib/stable/glib-building.html GLib can, and is indeed recommended to, be compiled using GLib's internal version of PCRE (i.e. using the configure script option --with-pcre=internal). Note that the internal version of PCRE does not require C++ (see https://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/tree/glib/pcre). uname -a: 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.57-3+deb7u1 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Should a fix only run /usr/bin/editor if $EDITOR is an empty string? Is that all, or is there some other envvar I should look for? I'm not entirely sure, but I believe you might want to check for both EDITOR and VISUAL, as the later is used to indicate a preferred GUI editor. However, you may need to add additional detection to see if the user is in a graphical environment to determine whether to use VISUAL or EDITOR. I believe supporting EDITOR as a minimum should suffice for most use cases. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guide_to_Unix/Environment_Variables

Bug#628654: potential solution
I noticed that this bug is marked as being blocked by #695140, and that #695140 is marked as wontfix. I don't believe that #695140 is needed to solve this bug. If the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98xbindkeys script is moved to another location, and then a desktop file dropped in /etc/xdg/autostart/, I believe the startup order will be corrected. I've moved the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98xbindkeys to /usr/bin/xbindkeys_autostart, made it executable, and use the attached desktop file (placed in /etc/xdg/autostart/). This provides the same override logic as before, but starts xbindkeys after the user's environment has been properly setup. Thus, any terminals launched from xbindkeys have the proper references to agents (like SSH). xbindkeys.desktop Description: application/desktop

This is not the case on all systems, especially since the current installer offers a direct means of locking the root account and enabling "sudo" for the first configured user. cat <&3 echo "*** BEGIN LVM" >&3 su root -c "vgdisplay; pvdisplay; lvdisplay" >&3 echo "*** END LVM" >&3 fi -- Package-specific info: *** BEGIN /proc/mounts /dev/mapper/vg0-root / xfs rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota 0 0 /dev/mapper/vg0-home /home xfs rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota 0 0 /dev/mapper/vg0-log /var/log xfs rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota 0 0 /dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/jamin/keys ext3 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 *** END /proc/mounts *** BEGIN /boot/grub/device.map (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/memstick-MS_0x79001edd (hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_THNSNS128GMCP_42HS10GSTWRZ (hd2) /dev/disk/by-id/usb-SanDisk_Cruzer_Edge_20042906101E0E704FCC-0:0 *** END /boot/grub/device.map *** BEGIN /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then load_env fi set default="0" if [ "${prev_saved_entry}" ]; then set saved_entry="${prev_saved_entry}" save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z "${boot_once}" ]; then saved_entry="${chosen}" save_env saved_entry fi } function load_video { insmod vbe insmod vga insmod video_bochs insmod video_cirrus } insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod xfs set root='(vg0-root)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root bbad0904-e653-4fd3-a5bf-e5a04d870122 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 load_video insmod gfxterm insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod xfs set root='(vg0-root)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root bbad0904-e653-4fd3-a5bf-e5a04d870122 set locale_dir=($root)/boot/grub/locale set lang=en_US insmod gettext fi terminal_output gfxterm set timeout=5 ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod xfs set root='(vg0-root)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root bbad0904-e653-4fd3-a5bf-e5a04d870122 insmod png if background_image /usr/share/images/desktop-base/joy-grub.png; then set color_normal=white/black set color_highlight=black/white else set menu_color_normal=cyan/blue set menu_color_highlight=white/blue fi ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.10-3-amd64' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { load_video insmod gzio insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod xfs set root='(vg0-root)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root bbad0904-e653-4fd3-a5bf-e5a04d870122 echo'Loading Linux 3.10-3-amd64 ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.10-3-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vg0-root ro initrd=/install/gtk/initrd.gz quiet echo'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.10-3-amd64 } menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.10-3-amd64 (recovery mode)' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { load_video insmod gzio insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod xfs set root='(vg0-root)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root bbad0904-e653-4fd3-a5bf-e5a04d870122 echo'Loading Linux 3.10-3-amd64 ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.10-3-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vg0-root ro single initrd=/install/gtk/initrd.gz echo'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.10-3-amd64 } menuentry 'Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { load_video insmod gzio insmod lvm insmod part_msdos insmod xfs set root='(vg0-root)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root bbad0904-e653-4fd3-a5bf-e5a04d870122 echo'Loading Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vg0-root ro initrd=/install/gtk/initrd.gz quiet echo'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-amd64 } menuentry 'D
Bug#729411: grub-pc: attempts to install to mmcblk0 rather than sda

Bug#706877: insserv: breaks dist-upgrade by installing before packages fix their init scripts
On 10/19/2013 02:08 PM, Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: [Jamin W. Collins] Perhaps listing a conflict with package versions prior to those that have the fixed init scripts would be enough. However, this would need to be tested. I don't have details on hand for which specific versions of packages had init scripts that caused the issue, I'm sorry. I suspect it would have to be solved on a case by case basis, as we are talking about packages with bogus or incomplete boot script ordering information. It may be bogus or incomplete boot script ordering information, but it previously worked, keep that in mind. One does not expect a Debian dist-upgrade from one stable release to another to result in a non-functional system. Would it be possible to have innserv only warn and not break the upgrade? By this I mean allow the rest of the upgrade to proceed. I believe doing so would result in the fixed packages getting installed and thereby also mitigating the issue. I doubt it, given that the incorrect boot ordering information exist in the package in question, and continuing might leave the system in a non-bootable state anyway. So the options seem to be to abort the upgrade and require manual intervention, or continue the upgrade and perhaps end up with a non-bootable system. The former seem like a better option to me, to avoid silent breakage. The former effectively left me locked out of my systems. I had to reboot every one of them to a single user root session to fix them as my user existed only in LDAP and then unrelated init scripts caused the upgrade to abort in such a way that my user could no longer be validated for sudo. Had the upgrade proceeded, the system would have been in complete working order (AFAICT). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#706877: insserv: breaks dist-upgrade by installing before packages fix their init scripts
On 09/27/2013 12:38 AM, Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: Do you have any idea how to solve it for everyone? Would it help if insserv list a conflict or break on the problematic package versions to make sure they are upgraded first? Which package version should be listed like that? I don't have specific suggestions on how to fix it for everyone, but this has resulted in rather extreme breakage on each of the Debian systems that I've dist-upgraded. Which given my previous experience with Debian came as quite a shock. For less experienced users this would be an extremely poor user experience. Bug#706877: insserv: breaks dist-upgrade by installing before packages fix their init scripts
Package: insserv Version: 1.14.0-5 Severity: critical This bug completely breaks dist-upgrades, leaving the system in an indeterminate state. In my case, it resulted in being unable to use sudo from my account and having to completely reboot the box and use init=/bin/bash to recover. This bug has been reported in various forms repeatedly, with insufficient severity each time. Examples of this type of breakage: #651037, #589238, #695751 Several packages have updated init scripts that will resolve the aparent dependency loops, such as: munin-node. However, insserv is installed before them during the dist-upgrade and fails installation due to the existing loops in the init scripts. Examples of this are: fetchmail and munin-node. The munin-node init script bug report is #680223. However, the updated package wasn't installed until after insserv. While I haven't found a bug report for the fetchmail issue, I did notice an updated init script being installed by it. -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (900, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages insserv depends on: ii libc6 2.13-38 insserv recommends no packages. Also, since the package is in stable (etch), I'd like to know in which way the php library is invoked and how vulnerable to attacks the stable version is. If it is severe enough, we should prepare a DSA, otherwise an update could go through s-p-u. See above. I don't see how this could normally be exploited in mediamate's case, s-p-u should be fine. Bug#329680: Status of jabber package?
Stefan Ott wrote: I'm curious: you say the jabber package was "orphaned from under me" but you are still the official maintainer - what's happening there? I would have to look back through the bug reports, but there was a report not too terribly long ago that was asking for an update. I responded that there was some discussion between myself and the various other Jabber related package maintainers about how to proceed. Immediately following my response, the initial reporter put the Jabber packages up for adoption. In case you want/need a helping hand with the package, let me know. I'm not a dd but I do some packaging. If you *want* to orphan the package, I'm sure we'll find people to adopt it. If you *don't* want to orphan the package, even better! :) Ideally, I don't want to orphan the packages, but they do need quite a bit of work. All of the existing transports that I'm the maintainer of need to be removed from the distribution, they have all been replaced by alternative versions. The problem there is leaving the users of the transports without some means of migrating to the newer transport versions. However, I need to be honest with myself and Debian. Due to both personal items (my wife's death in April) and project issues, I really don't have much motivation to work on Debian related items at this time, nor am I likely to in the near(ish) future. Add to this that I'll likely have more day-job related work to do in the near future and it really doesn't appear that I can honestly say I'll have time to work on the packages. So, I have not fought the previous package orphaning, though I do find it rather rude. I would be more than happy to try co-maintaining the package with you. But honestly don't know how much time I can muster toward it. Initially, I fear that my contribution would be little more than sponsorship and review of your packaging/changes. If this is acceptable to you, I'd be willing to give it a shot. Other than that, are there any particular reasons left for not shipping 1.6.x with lenny+1? Primarily time and motivation. -- Jamin W. Unless you follow up soon, the ftp master will remove the package from the Debian archive. I see no reason to argue against the removal. In fact at this point, all the C based transports should probably be removed from the archive in favor of the newer (and upstream active) Python based transports. Bug#471408: ITO: intent to orphan
Peter Eisentraut wrote: Package: jabber Version: 1.4.3-3.3 Severity: important Obviously, this package is not being maintained anymore, so unless someone objects, I'm going to orphan this package in about a week's time. This version is severely outdated and suffering from a number of problems. The most prominent of which is licensing, which led to a period of no updates. I don't feel that Debian can reliably meet the requirements of the JOSL license which this was received under. While some of the code does indicate it can be relicensed under the GPL this proved problematic in practice and led to some parts being completely rewritten in order to actual effect the relicense. By the time the relicense actually took place I found myself with little time and desire to work on packaging the new version for Debian. There have been recent discussions regarding the formation of a Jabber Team in order to provide a more consistent packaged solution across the various servers and transports. If you feel you must orphan this package, go ahead. However, I highly suggest that no updates to this package be done (due to licensing) and instead that the newer fully GPL'd version be used. -- Jamin W. Better yet, are they adjustable? I routinely create a separate partition for my logs (/var/log), this is frequently appears on the desktops for my users. As far as I can tell, the current state is an all or nothing switch to either display all volume icons that fail some (currently unknown) filtering heuristic or display no drive icons. The display of volume icons is useful for removable media (such as those items mounted via pmount), but not so useful for more permanently attached volumes (such as additional partitions of the local hard drive(s)). -- Jamin W. It's not so much a question of whether it is possible to use it without freepats, it's a question of the provided default configuration. As the package is currently provided it will not even start. While removing the configuration entry will allow timidity to start, it appears that it does not have any instrument sounds or at least my attempts without it failed to produce any sound. > It's a thin line; the reason it is like it is now is to avoid that people > need > to install a 28M package (freepats) which they might not need, just to use > timidity. I can understand this concern, but current the provided installation will likely be broken for many (if not most) users due to the default configuration file and the lack of instruments. I simply installed freepats when I noticed it was the reason timidity was failing. Bug#310444: Useful addition
This would be a very useful addition to the program. As the original post indicates there are times that the application can take several seconds to minutes to connect/timeout. Bug#451536: upgrade fails if using private SSL cert and pem
Package: slapd Version: 2.3.30-5 Severity: normal Upgraded my OpenLDAP server this morning and slapd failed to start. The initial failure was in the middle of a general dist-upgrade from sarge to etch. As such the notices about the failure scrolled off the screen. So, to find the reason for the failure I ran "apt-get -f install". This of course failed due to the backup already existing, as others have noted. Moving the latest backup out of the way allowed the previous upgrade failure message and notes to be displayed. Running "slapd -u openldap -g openldap -d 16383" revealed the cause of the failure. While the database ownership had been updated to the new user:group, the configuration files (/etc/ldap) had not. Specifically, the SSL certificate and key used for SSL connections could not be read. Changing the ownership on the key and certificate to openldap:openldap and once again moving the backup out of the way corrected the problem. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-5-k7 Debian Release: 4.0 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#420081: S2S and SSL work fine.
severity 420081 normal tags 420081 = moreinfo unreproducible thanks I've just tested this on a bare Debian 4.0 installation. Installed only jabber-1.4.3-3.3, created a self signed SSL certificate, and made the minimal changes necessary to configure the server to use the certificate and communicate with other servers. I then added my normal jabber account to the contact list of my new user on the test system. Both accounts are connected to their respective servers via SSL and I'm able to pass messages back and forth between them. Based on the above findings, I'm downgrading the severity of this report. I suspect the problem that's being experienced by some is with some other component. For those experiencing this problem, are you also running any transports? If so, which one(s)? Can you try disabling all transports and test just the core jabber server using the 1.4.3-3.3 package? -- Jamin W. Bug#442200: xorg: periodically stops responding to mouse clicks or window changes
Brice Goglin wrote: > You're using the nvidia binary driver, we can't debug this. Could you > reproduce with a free driver, either nv or vesa? The bug is not reproducible at will and neither the nv or vesa drivers provide the necessary hardware video acceleration needed for daily use on the system. The system may operate fine for days or weeks at a time without exhibiting the problem. It is simply not feasible to operate without the hardware acceleration for an indefinite time frame hoping for the problem to occur. If there were some logging and/or tracing that could be put in place to capture information when this happened or that could be gathered by remotely connecting to the machine when this occurs, I'd be happy to gather it. But switching to either the nv or vesa drivers would effectively cripple the system and make it unsuitable for its daily use. -- Jamin W. Bug#442200: xorg: periodically stops responding to mouse clicks or window changes
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.1.0-19 Severity: normal Not entirely sure where to report this or how to go about starting to troubleshoot or track this problem down, but periodically my X session will become almost completely unresponsive. The applications will continue to update their windows/display. And if the mouse is still visible, it can be moved around the screen. However, clicking on anything with the mouse fails to elicit the normal response (focusing a window, opening a menu, launching an application, etc). If the last focused window allowed text entry the keyboard will continue to enter into it. However, any attempt to change windows (via keybinds), kill the X session (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE), or switch to a VT (CTRL+ALT+[1=6]) all produce no response. Suggestions on where to beginning tracking this down or possible reassignment of this bug to a more appropriate package would be most appreciated. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (900, 'stable'), (400, 'testing'), (300, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-5-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages xorg depends on: ii aterm [x-terminal-emula 1.0.0-4 Afterstep XVT - a VT102 emulator f ii eterm [x-terminal-emula 0.9.4.0debian1-2 Enlightened Terminal Emulator ii gnome-terminal [x-termi 2.14.2-1 The GNOME 2 terminal emulator appl ii libgl1-mesa-dri 6.5.1-0.6A free implementation of the OpenG ii libgl1-mesa-glx 6.5.1-0.6A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa6.5.1-0.6The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii rxvt [x-terminal-emulat 1:2.6.4-10 VT102 terminal emulator for the X ii type-handling [not+spar 0.2.19 dpkg architecture generation scrip ii xbase-clients 1:7.1.ds1-2 miscellaneous X clients ii xfonts-100dpi 1:1.0.0-3100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi1:1.0.0-375 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-base 1:1.0.0-4standard fonts for X ii xfonts-scalable 1:1.0.0-6scalable fonts for X ii xkb-data0.9-4X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg1:7.1.0-19 the X.Org X server ii xterm [x-terminal-emula 222-1etch2 X terminal emulator ii xutils 1:7.1.ds.3-1 X Window System utility programs xorg recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". There are users using the SVN version on production systems (me included), and currently they (we) are required to still use OpenSSL. If I would have changed the licence already, some people could consider us to ignore the licence. OpenSSL support will be removed once GnuTLS has all functionallity. (I expect this in the next days.) And the licence will be changed then to be GPL-only. I did notice that several of the files included linking exceptions for OpenSSL, but not all. So, this is completely understandable. I hope I could resolve all your doubts with that mail. Yes, I believe you have. I just wanted to document why there could not be an immediate upload of the current release. I hope you have not taken any of my replies as personal attacks or lack of appreciation for your efforts in this matter. I really do appreciate the work you've done here. -- Jamin W. OTOH if it's an > obscure menu option then just adding `(not recommended!)' in an > appropriate string might be sufficient. I just tested an absolutely default install of Azureus from the current package in testing (2.5.0.0+0-1). Without changing any configuration settings from the prompted defaults, I'm presented with a dialog to download a newer version of both the "Core Azureus Version" and "azupdater/Azureus Update Support" automatically. There is no indication that doing so will deviate from the provided Debian packaging. Nor, did I as a user select to have the application go out and check for updates. Allowing the application to download the update resulted in no indication that it would be updating in my home directory instead of the system-wide location. After relaunching for the update the following error (not present prior to the update appeared): Error SWT library loaded from "/usr/share/java" can't be automatically updated from version 3235 to 3318 (must be loaded from "/home/jcollins/.azureus"). Please see the wiki for details. So, no only does the application default to checking for and suggesting updates, allowing it to do so appears to result in some form of dependency problem with the SWT library. -- Jamin W. Bug#329680: GnuTLS support for jabberd14
Matthias Wimmer wrote: > > BTW: Snapshot is available at > http://download.jabberd.org/jabberd14/snapshots/jabberd14-1.6.0+20070114.tar.gz I've looked through the snapshot. From what I can tell, the source files are still explicitly licensed primarily under the JOSL license with the option of relicensing them under the GPL. While the source files do have the option of licensing them under the GPL, doing so requires explicit modification of each file to remove the JOSL statement and add the GPL statement. I had hope this change would be done upstream as part of the relicensing effort. However, this is a lesser concern than the other items listed below. Some of the source files are either missing licensing statements or are licensed under licenses incompatible with the GPL: jabberd/lib/jabberdlib.h - appears to be missing any form of licensing declaration jabberd/lib/sha.c - appears to only be licensed under the MPL v1.1. As far as I know the MPL is not compatible with the GPL[1]. jabberd/lib/snprintf.c - as you previously indicated is licensed under the GPL incompatible Apache license. While Paul van Tilburg has indicated that this file is not used on GNU/Linux that does not appear to be the case, as removing it results in build failure. This is true only if OpenSSL is removed from the resultant package as far as I know. Additionally, as you indicate a DFSG clean tarball would need to be constructed, removing snprintf.c (this is trivial). However, loss of SSL support upon upgrade is a larger concern for me. Upgrading users from a version of the jabber package that supports SSL to a version that doesn't isn't a good idea in my opinion. > I see that in over almost two years there has been no activity > surrounding this package (except for some work by Andi). Most of the potential updates to the package have been postponed waiting the licensing outcome as I didn't feel I could meet the requirements of JOSL license. An updated package for 1.6.0 could indeed be made, but I fear that such a package will likely be seen as a regression or loss of features by most users as I'll have to remove the SSL support due to potential licensing conflicts (OpenSSL and GPL linking without a waiver). For more information on this, please read Matthias Wimmer's update to this bug. > If you do not have the time to maintain it or are no longer > interested, I would like to request to adopt this package from you. None of the tests I performed indicated that the version of libwrap in testing/unstable were respecting hosts.deny at all. As it stands currently, you can utilized a valid documented method of calling the hosts_ctl function (from the manpage): int hosts_ctl(daemon, client_name, client_addr, client_user) hosts_ctl() is a wrapper around the request_init() and hosts_access() routines with a perhaps more convenient interface (though it does not pass on enough information to support automated client username lookups). The client host address, client host name and username argu- ments should contain valid data or STRING_UNKNOWN. hosts_ctl() returns zero if access should be denied. as vino does (server/libvncserver/sockets.c): if(!hosts_ctl("vnc",STRING_UNKNOWN,inet_ntoa(addr.sin_addr), STRING_UNKNOWN)) { rfbLog("Rejected connection from client %s\n", inet_ntoa(addr.sin_addr)); close(sock); return; } and the configuration in hosts.deny will be effectively ignored. -- Jamin W. Bug#405342: libwrap0: hosts.deny becomes useless
Janusz Krzysztofik wrote: I believe my patch is safe because for the old behaviour (process name) it only removes error provoking condition on request->server-:sim being set, introduced by port numbrer patch, and does not change anything else. This condition is only applicable in case of port number, I think. On the other hand, I can not imagine a real-life example when request->server->sin is not set. I think this can only happen using tcpdmatch, so maybe correcting this utility to set request->server->sin instead of (or in addition to) patching the library would be more appropriate. I can give you a real world example, after all that's how I found it. I only use hosts.allow and hosts.deny to set the two rules I indicated in the initial bug report. That is allowing ssh connections from any location and denying everything else except those connections from localhost. Support for libwrap was recently added to vino. With the existing libwrap0 package in testing/unstable connections to vino are allowed from any location (not just connections from localhost). You may ask why this is useful. Requiring that the connections come from localhost is a means of securing vnc connections. In my case the localost connection is achieved by tunneling vnc connections over ssh. -- Jamin W. Bug#354850: Leaving the system broken? wontfix?
I don't agree with the severity classification or tagging of either of these bug reports. The end result for anyone struck by this bug (same for both reports) is that MySQL is either removed or left in a non-functional state. Sure, they can remove the offending database, losing the data. They could also go through some convoluted work around (assuming they have another system lying around). The proper severity for this bug appears to be Important, "a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable to everyone." This is clearly the case for those effected. I'll admit, one of my packages mediamate uses ISAM tables. I wasn't aware they were being phased out. I don't normally go hunting through the syslog looking for errors/warnings when things are working. I suspect many other Debian users are in the same boat. This problem needs to be properly addressed prior to etch's release. With properly being in such a way as to allow the admin of the box a clean method of updating the tables or automatically performing the update for them. Leaving them with a broken installation or completely without MySQL after the upgrade isn't an option that should be considered viable for etch. -- Jamin W. Bug#383963: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#383963: dbus: hald fails to start on boot, but starts fine after
Sjoerd Simons wrote: Thanks for your experimentation! I guess this is related to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=376426. Could you try to downgrade libnss-ldap (version 238-1.2 works for me) to and see if it fixes things? Also might be interesting to see if you have the same issue as the reporter and myself (can't login if nscd is not running) I'll probably move dbus to S21 or something later on, having nscd running when dbus is started is indeed nice to have (Should save some ldap queries on system startup). But in the end the root cause needs to be fixed, not dbus.. I've done some further experimentation and it appears that a simple change to the current libnss-ldap package corrects most of the problems for me. The patch is attached. If you could test this packaging change with 251-5. Rolling back to 238-1.2 did correct all libnss-ldap related problems I was experiencing, but it seems this packaging change (small though it is) does to. -- Jamin W.
