Bug#677650: proposed fix for this bug

Bug#662588: unhide: incorrect use of alternatives
Hi Piotr, Le lundi 05 mars 2012 à 09:09:48 (+0100 CET), Piotr Engelking a écrit : The unhide postinst script switches the unhide alternative to manual mode, which is a violation of section 3 of the wheezy RC policy. The manual mode is provided for the system administrator. The use of the alternative is also broken: it decides which binary to run based on which kernel was used at the package install time, which is not necessarily the kernel that is used at run time. Please remove the alternatives. One correct replacement would be to use a wrapper to choose the binary. This is, however, no longer necessary, since Debian doesn't support pre-2.6 Linux kernels anymore, so a simpler solution is to just use the 2.6 features unconditionally on Linux systems. [...] The question as to why BINDIR in the config file is being ignored remains. Read around line 2122 of rkhunter: # The BINPATHS list is prepended with the root PATH. However, # any specified BINDIR directories beginning with a '+' will # be prepended before the root PATH. # # Once that has been done, we check that each directory begins # with a '/'. We remove any non-existent directories, but we do # not flag this as an error. We also remove any duplicate directories. Hence the root PATH is then always considered, contrary to what I had originally thought. The behaviour you describe is IMHO normal, the cause is the fact you don't allow ~/bin to be expanded to /home/user/bin. Bug#657103: rkhunter: Invalid BINDIR configuration option: Invalid directory found: ~/bin
package rkhunter severity 657103 important thanks Le mardi 24 janv. 2012 à 02:38:05 (+0100 CET), Jesse Molina a écrit : Package: rkhunter Version: 1.3.8-10 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Lowering the severity as it seems the package is unusable only in specific circumstances. When doing sudo rkhunter --propupd, error; Invalid BINDIR configuration option: Invalid directory found: ~/bin Both the user and root user have ~/bin in their $PATH, which seems to trigger the issue. Note that; --egrep ^BINDIR /etc/rkhunter.conf BINDIR=/bin /usr/bin /sbin /usr/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/local/sbin /usr/libexec /usr/local/libexec But, it complains and fails anyway. This indeed shouldn't happen as $PATH should only be used when BINDIR configuration option doesn't exist. What is your default shell? I'm surprised it leaves ~/bin in $PATH - it should be automagically changed to an absolute path. % grep PATH ~/.zshrc ## PATH definition [ -d ~/scripts ] PATH=$PATH:~/scripts [ -d ~/bin ] PATH=$PATH:~/bin % echo $PATH /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/home/julien/scripts:/home/julien/bin rkhunter then complains as it only accepts bin directories beginning with / to avoid any relative paths being used. Additional opinionated dribble: At this point, the package, which offers limited value to me anyway, becomes too much trouble to be worth configuring so I'll just not deal with it. If the designer wishes for a security package like this to be effective, it needs to be useful in it's default configuration so that minimal manual intervention is required to do the job. Very hard to make a default configuration for every possible system while keeping everything as secure as possible - just as with any other piece of software, you have to spend some time to configure it. Bug#652170: new libprocps0 package
Le mercredi 11 janv. 2012 à 23:50:12 (+0100 CET), Craig Small a écrit : Hello, Apologies for the rough ride around the libprocps library change. The latest procps now has split out the shared library into its own package. This should mean that there is less of this problem in future. You will need to download libprocps0-dev and re-link the program to -lprocps. There is also a pkg-config file if you need that. I've tested it with xmem and it builds fine with 2 small changes. In future, there will be a large API change but that will be in a new library version package so it won't be like the programs suddenly stop working like before. Thanks Craig for your work, I have just built guymager against libprocps0-dev and uploaded it to the archive. Cheers, Julien -- .''`. I don't think so. On all systems (desktops, servers) I have 'ssmtp' to provide the 'sendmail' interface, thus no SMTP daemon. One think I've noticed a few days ago is that something was changing the hostname from the FQDN (frost.DOMAIN -- set from /etc/hostname) to just 'frost' but I didn't investigate further. Also, today I obtained this message while doing packages upgrades: | Processing triggers for man-db ... | Processing triggers for menu ... | Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ... | Processing triggers for gnome-menus ... | Processing triggers for hicolor-icon-theme ... | Processing triggers for cups ... | Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd. | WARNING: gnome-keyring:: no socket to connect to | WARNING: gnome-keyring:: no socket to connect to | Updating PPD files for postscript-hp ... | Updating PPD files for splix ... | Processing triggers for gconf2 ... Bug#651119: rkhunter: False positives when checking running processes for suspicious files
package rkhunter tags 651119 + moreinfo thanks Hi Rory, Le lundi 05 déc. 2011 à 22:52:34 (+0100 CET), Rory Campbell-Lange a écrit : Package: rkhunter Version: 1.3.6-4 Severity: important Processes that match any of the checked strings (noted after the colon after ...were found) trigger rkhunter alerts. Please check the log file (/var/log/rkhunter.log) Thanks for reporting this issue. However, I am not sure to understand what you mean: do you thin you get a warning because system is found in a running process name? I fail to understand how this could happen, at least in the current code, as the possible suspicious *files* are grepped in the lsof output using the following code: FOUNDFILES=`grep /${FNAMEGREP}$ ${RKHLSOF_FILE}` In the version 1.3.6 you use, the following code is used: FILENAME=`${LSOF_CMD} -wnlP -F n | grep '^n/' | sed -e 's/^n//' | ${SORT_CMD} | ${UNIQ_CMD} | egrep /(${SUSP_FILES})\$` which means, in your example, that '--system' could not be matched. Also, note that the suspicious files listed in the warning are checked with the output of lsof which lists open files, and not running processes (as does ps). 'dbus-daemon --system' is not a file, but a running process. I hence fail to understand what triggers the warning you get. Have you checked the logfile and the lsof output? Cheers, Julien -- .''`. The current default behaviour prevents standard users from creating any connection, even private. Not quite true, as you can still create connections in nm-connection-editor which are not system-wide. True, but then, the user has to know what an SSID is, what kind of encryption scheme is used etc. Which I think is against NM philosophy. But the new behaviour is definitely annoying. That said, it is something upstream did purposefully and is most certainly not going to change. Too bad, espacially as this can lead to unsecure situations: I had to send *my* password to my girlfriend by SMS yesterday, as she *had* to connect to a new wireless network and could not do it herself. Policykit default configuration doesn't help. My user is in the sudo group, but I still use the root account. Then, the only administrative user is me. I had to add my girlfriend account to the sudo group to avoid similar situations in the future, but I do not think it is optimum (I know I could add a .pkla file to allow specific user/group to deal with NM system wide settings, but I don't consider it a nice workaround neither). The default NM behaviour should definitively be configurable, I totally agree with Vincent on this point. Bug#644754: openbox: Please document configuration changes to be made after upgrading to 3.5
Package: openbox Version: 3.5.0-1 Severity: wishlist Dear Maintainers, It would be great to state the changes to be made to one's configuration after upgrading to the 3.5 release in NEWS.Debian. The ArchLinux wiki has a small section about the major changes [0] and also about troubleshooting 3.5 [1] which was really helpful for me. By the way, the 3.5.0-1 package doesn't ship any environment file, but still contains an autostart.sh file which can be misleading for the end user (at least, it was for me). Thanks for your work. Bug#642932: mailgraph does start up after upgrade to wheezy
Hi, Le dimanche 25 sept. 2011 à 20:35:45 (+0200 CEST), RJ Clay a écrit : Package: mailgraph Version: 1.14-9 Severity: minor Dear Maintainer, Found that the mailgraph application is not starting up on an LXC system after it was upgraded to wheezy/sid. Initially thought it might be because I had kept the old mailgraph /etc/default file when I upgraded the system, so tried makeing the new one active but that did not resolve the issue. Checking through /etc/default/mailgraph and /etc/init.d/mailgraph found that it looks like the BOOT_START parameter at line 7 of the default /etc/default/mailgraph should be true instead of the Yes that appears to be set in the default configuration of the file. Changed that parameter from Yes to true and was then able to start mailgraph with no other apparent issue. Thanks for spotting out this possible issue. The default configuration file is set to true, not Yes (see /usr/share/mailgraph/default.conf). As this file is managed via ucf and debconf, running `dpkg-reconfigure mailgraph' should set the correct value (ie. true or false depending on your choice, the default being true). I have to check how upgrade from Squeeze to Wheezy is handled in the case the existing default file is set to Yes (which might have been the default value in the Squeeze version). It was intentionally made for use with tint2 panel in the openbox environment to be launched upon clock click, but of course it will work without it. In fact, binding the gsimplecal to some hotkey in you window manager will probably make you happy. The thing is that when it is started it first shows up, when you run it again it closes the running instance. In that way it is very easy to integrate anywhere. No need to write some wrapper scripts or whatever. Also, you can configure it to not only show the calendar, but also display multiple clocks for different world timezones. -- .''`. According to the tool-tip that displays when one moves the mouse on them, it seems that these empty spots are due to xfce4-power-manager. And indeed, killing it removes them all. They also got removed if I restart my window manager (fluxbox). The same happens with version 0.8.5-2. It'd help providing logs from xfpm (running using --no-daemon and --debug), but as you might have seen in this bug, I'm out of idea. In particular, I wanted to avoid any reconfiguration of the MTA (exim). Therefore, both the responsibility of calling dspam (actually dspamc) and actual disposition of emails was left to the delivery agent. The delivery agent is my homemade one [1] but you can just imagine procmail in its place, as the functionality is very similar. Bug#632827: xfce4-power-manager: settings window fails to show correct option values
Package: xfce4-power-manager Version: 1.0.10-4 Severity: normal Hi, It seems some of the configuration options are not taken into account in xfce4-power-manager-setting UI. Bug#586522: Please upload the volumeicon package
Hi Andrew, Le dimanche 13 févr. 2011 à 22:26:28 (+0100 CET), Andrew Gainer a écrit : I have prepared (what I believe is) a compliant Debian package for volumeicon and am in the process of finding a sponsor. I have quickly checked the package available on mentors.d.n and while it is mostly ok, there are still a few things to improve: * You have made direct changes to the upstream source code, leading to the creation of a debian-changes-0.3.0-2 patch * You don't need to depend on libgtk2.0-0 (the dependency is automatically added by dpkg-shlibdeps) * For a first upload to Debian, please keep the changelog clean and make sure the ITP gets closed * dpkg-shlideps warns about the binary to be linked against several unused libraries - you might want to build the package using -Wl,--as-needed * You should specify the GPL-3 license text in a standalone license paragraph as recommended in DEP-5 * You miss several copyright information (mostly for autotools files etc.) * You ship an empty NEWS file in the package, as well as a useless README (which only contains information on how to build volumeicon) - AUTHORS is imho also useless as the information is also in the copyright file * Have you forwarded your manpage to the upstream developer? I'd be happy to upload this package for you if you fix these points (or argue why you won't fix some of them). You can contact me directly, either by mail or on IRC (as jvalroff on freenode and oftc). Cheers, Julien -- .''`. Bug#627035: [rkhunher] rkhunter always fails with Invalid BINDIR configuration option:
package rkhunter tags 627035 wontfix severity 627035 normal retitle 627035 rkhunter fails when PATH contains . (ie. current directory) thanks Hi Thomas, Le mercredi 18 mai 2011 à 08:59:27 (+0200 CEST), Tomas Davidek a écrit : --- Please enter the report below this line. --- This version always fails with ipnp21:/home/davidek# rkhunter -c --rwo Invalid BINDIR configuration option: Invalid directory found: . Even specifying the --bindir option does not help, e.g.: ipnp21:/home/davidek# rkhunter --bindir /sbin -c --rwo Invalid '--bindir' option: Invalid directory found: . I can't reproduce this issue. What is the output of the following command: grep ^BINDIR /etc/rkhunter.conf{,.local} Here is more info: ipnp21:/home/davidek# grep ^BINDIR /etc/rkhunter.conf BINDIR=/bin /usr/bin /sbin /usr/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/local/sbin /usr/libexec /usr/local/libexec What is in your $PATH? ipnp21:/home/davidek# echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:.:/root/bin I see, here is the problem. When I set $PATH to /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/root/bin, then the problem disappears. My questions is then why rkhunter minds the current directory being in PATH ? 16682 # Create a spaced-separated PATH variable. 16683 RKHROOTPATH=`echo ${PATH} | tr ':' ' '` Then it is used to know where to locate the various commands used by rkhunter etc. Your problem comes from the fact `.' does not begin with a `/': 2149 elif [ -z `echo ${DIR} | grep '^/'` ]; then […] 2152 echo Invalid ${RKHTMPVAR2} option: Invalid directory found: ${DIR} Not sure what to do with it, as having the current directory in the path for root is generally considered dangerous. I doubt you really want to use that… and I won't change rkhunter behaviour in Debian (I know upstream will disagree with such a change). I hence tag this bug as wontfix but would prefer closing it if you agree with this. Did you have the exact same configuration with previous version (1.3.8-5)? Yes, I did not change anything. I guess you haven't tested previous 1.3.8 versions as I can easily reproduce this issue also with 1.3.8-5 (the only change introduced in the new version has nothing to do with this issue anyway).
