Bug#1053223: python3-ipython: Interactive embedding of ipython using the InteractiveShellEmbed method as documented, is broken

2023-09-29 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: python3-ipython
Version: 8.14.0-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: lgp171...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

The IPython documentation has the following example on embedding it.
https://github.com/ipython/ipython/blob/8.14.0/examples/Embedding/embed_class_long.py

This example does not work with the python3-ipython package version 8.14.0-1 in
Debian unstable and throws an exception.

Here is a minimal example `ise.py` file which can reproduce this issue.

```
from IPython.terminal.embed import InteractiveShellEmbed
ipshell = InteractiveShellEmbed()
ipshell()
```

On running this script with `python3 ise.py`, it opens the IPython interactive
shell. Typing any statements and pressing enter to execute it, causes an
exception. Below is an instance of this error happening.

```
guruprasad@debian-sid:~$ python3 ise.py
This breaks all the usages of the interactive shell embedding using the
Dear Maintainer,
Debian has provided official vagrant base boxes in 2 flavors - one without the
VirtualBox guest additions
Dear Maintainer,
There is a comment in /etc/exim4/conf.d/main/01_exim4-config_listmacrosdefs
which
points to chapter 2.1.2 in the Debian README for reading up on locally
overriding the Debian macros in a local configuration file. But the chapter
number is incorrect. The correct chapter number is 2.1.3.
This issue is also present in the exim4-config package in testing, unstable
and experimental releases.
I have attached the patch for fixing this issue. Kindly review the same.
Hi,
I have the locale set to English and most of the text is in English
apart from a few here and there. I believe that could be a bug and
hence I reported this issue.
It looks like the issue is with the vagrant box I was using. When using
debian/jessie64 box, it works fine for me. So I guess this issue can be
closed now. In case I find something which indicates that something
could be wrong with vagrant, I will reply to this bug again.
Bug#801056: cloud.debian.org: Kernel headers are required to upgrade the guest-additions
2015-10-05 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: cloud.debian.org
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
The debian/jessie64 vagrant box published on HashiCorp Atlas doesn't have the
linux kernel headers installed. When bringing up a VM, vagrant warns if
the guest additions installed on the guest do not match with the VirtualBox
version on the host. But the VM should work fine.
There is a vagrant-vbguest plugin which automatically updates the guest
additions installed on the guest to match that of the VirtualBox version
on the host. It is widely used and even I have it installed on my system.
Since the kernel headers are not installed, the installation of the guest
additions fails and features like shared folders and etc. no longer work.
Yes, I am able to start the VM using the VirtualBox GUI and it works
absolutely fine. But when I do vagrant up, the VM gets created but does
not get powered on for some reason That is why I suspected the issue to
be with vagrant and reported the bug against it.
Does Vagrant require the features provided by the non-free ext-pack?
From what I have seen when reproducing this bug, it looks like it does.
Because there were no errors after installing virtualbox-ext-pack and
doing nothing else.
Right now I am at office and am on my Macbook. So will share the vagrant
debug logs if it is helpful to analyze the problem from the side of vagrant.
Not sure if this is helpful, but before I installed the vagrant package
from the Debian repository, I was using the 1.7.2 version installed from
the package available on the Vagrant site and I did not get this error
when using that. Since I found that vagrant was available in the Debian
repositories,  I removed it and then installed it from Debian's repos
and started getting this error till I installed virtualbox-ext-pack.
My bad! Didn't read about the packages before trying to install them :)
But installing these packages or not having them installed does nothing
to influence this issue.
Yes, vagrant is not tied to VirtualBox. But it is used most commonly
with VirtualBox. So after installing vagrant, if "vagrant up" command
fails with some error, that makes the package unusable for most of those
users because that is the command to start a VM from based on a
Vagrantfile. While this bug might not be "grave", imho it is definitely
more severe than "normal".
Ritesh Raj Sarraf has asked for more logs, if any. So I will uninstall
virtualbox-ext-pack and then run vagrant up with debug logging enabled
and share the logs collected.
I am not sure if recommending virtualbox-ext-pack will be of any help
because recommended packages do not get installed unless the user
explicitly chooses to install them. So unless the user installs
virtualbox-ext-pack, vagrant is broken for him/her when using with
VirtualBox.
Bug#800800: vagrant: Running vagrant up to start a VM fails with error
2015-10-03 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: vagrant
Version: 1.7.4+dfsg-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
Dear Maintainer,
*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***
   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
*** End of the template - remove these template lines ***
I installed the latest vagrant package from the Debian repositories on my
laptop running an up-to-date Debian unstable installation. I did this after
removing vagrant which I had installed from the .deb file available on Vagrant
website.
When I run vagrant up to provision and start a VM, it fails with the following
error:
Bringing machine 'default' up with 'virtualbox' provider...
==> default: Importing base box 'lgp171188/jessie64'...
==> default: Matching MAC address for NAT networking...
==> default: Checking if box 'lgp171188/jessie64' is up to date...
The guest machine entered an invalid state while waiting for it
to boot. Valid states are 'starting, running'. The machine is in the
'poweroff' state. Please verify everything is configured
properly and try again.
If the provider you're using has a GUI that comes with it,
it is often helpful to open that and watch the machine, since the
GUI often has more helpful error messages than Vagrant can retrieve.
For example, if you're using VirtualBox, run `vagrant up` while the
VirtualBox GUI is open.
The primary issue for this error is that the provider you're using
is not properly configured. This is very rarely a Vagrant issue.
I have installed the virtualbox-guest-utils, virtualbox-guest-x11 packages
and still I got this error.
But later when I installed virtualbox-ext-pack package from non-free, vagrant
worked fine without the above error. So if this is clearly reproducible,
vagrant package should depend on the virtualbox-ext-package which might
cause vagrant to be moved to non-free section.
Bug#790069: gnome-shell uses 100% CPU for some time on random system tray area access
2015-06-26 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.16.2-4
Dear Maintainer,
When accessing the system tray area in the bottom right corner of the screen,
some times
the system freezes for many minutes due to gnome-shell using 100% CPU. I have
seen this
issue often on trying to access the system tray area but not always.
Bug#789301: xul-ext-gcontactsync: Unable to sync contacts with app-specific password for Gmail with 2FA enabled
2015-06-19 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: xul-ext-gcontactsync
Version: 1.0.0-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
I have enabled 2 factor authentication on my Gmail account. Due to that, I
had to create a separate application-specific password for Thunderbird to be
able to access Gmail via IMAP and SMTP. But when I did that, gcontactsync
addon was no longer able to sync contacts. It complained that I had to be
logged in to sync contacts.
I uninstalled this package and installed the latest version from Mozilla
addons website - 2.0.5. I added my existing Gmail account to that and it
popped up the Gmail login page in a window and on login asked permission
to access and manage my contacts. Once that was done, it was able to sync
the contacts without any issues.
Bug#783974: pulseaudio: No sound on boot till pulseaudio is killed and restarted
 Also, I have assumed you do not have a local configuration. What are
 the contents of ~/.config/pulse ?
One weird thing I noticed is, the sound icon shows up in the
notification area in the login screen and when I move the volume level,
I hear the pop sound. But after login and once the desktop is ready for
use, it is gone and doesn't work till I kill and restart pulse.
Hope this helps.
 This is the problem. Why do you have disabled autospawn?
 So, a bit of background:
 In pulseaudio up to version 5, the script start-pulseaudio-x11 started
 pulseaudio and loaded some modules. But in version 6, systemd support
 was added so that you could start pa as a user service. This meant
 that starting pulseaudio from outside systemd could interfere with
 starting it with inside, so start-pulseaudio-x11 was changed to no
 longer start pa, instead relying on either systemd support or
 autospawn to start the server. In debian we have not enabled systemd
 by default because of problems with dbus, so we rely on autospawn.
 All this is a fairly long way of saying that you have disabled
 pulseaudio by disabling autospawn.
 So please remove that client.conf file and see if it works (and undo
 the changes to /etc/pulse/*).
I removed the file and things are working fine. I have never manually
created or edited the ~/.config/pulse/client.conf folder. So not sure
when and how the file got created since I have been running Debian
unstable from a couple of months after the Wheezy release. So if the
file is expected not to be there, I guess this bug is invalid.
Guruprasad
 As you're saying yourself the problem appears only when another add-on is
 installed, that means the package is not unusable by itself and thus the bug
 is
 not grave.
 And yes, there are people like myself who do not use xul-ext-gnome-keyring
 together with xul-ext-gcontactsync.
The xul-ext-gnome-keyring package was automatically installed without me
explicitly choosing it for installation. So I guess it might be
automatically installed for many other users as well. I will try to find
out which dependency caused the xul-ext-gnome-keyring package to be
automatically installed.
Bug#769759: gnome-session continuously logs the contents of documents in home to syslog
2014-11-16 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: gnome-session
Version: 3.14.0-2
Severity: grave
Dear Maintainer,
My system froze suddenly after recent package upgrades and rebooted
automatically. After reboot I checked the contents of syslog and found that
gnome-session is logging the contents of various PDF files and documents
present in my Downloads folder.
Here is a sample of the log:
snip
Nov 16 13:52:08 kal-el gnome-session[2414]: is book to prepare for programming
interviews: \n \n Give yourself enough time to prepare.  Start your
preparations as early as possible, ideally weeks or even months ahead of your
interviews. You need that time to practice the concepts presented here. (If you
don’t have the luxury of that much time, try to put aside some blocks of
uninterrupted time to study the material.) \n Practice answering problems.
Don’t just read through the solutions. Work through the problems using the
solutions for a hint when you get stuck and to verify your answer. Try to
simulate the interview experience. Most of the time you’ll be writing code on
paper or a whiteboard; practice this! It sounds silly, but it takes some
practice to get the programming part of your brain engaged through a pen
instead of a keyboard. \n Make sure you understand the underlying concepts.
Understanding the concepts that underlie the problems is the key to your
success. Don’
 t skip or gloss over the material you don’t understand. This book provides
enough of an explanation to refresh your memory of topics you’ve learned
before, but if you encounter something you’ve completely forgotten or never
learned, you may need to read more about it in another reference. \n Don’t
bother memorizing the answers to the problems.  Interviewers are unlikely to
present you with any of the problems in this book. Even if they do, they may
change the problem in any number of small ways. If you answer it by rote, your
answer may be incorrect. \n Keep practicing.  Your preparation doesn’t stop
after finishing this book. Keep working on programming problems; they’re easy
to find on the Internet. Find additional reference material, especially in your
areas of expertise, and keep reading. \n \n Your health and well-being is your
most important asset; it affects how well you learn and how well you interview.
Remember to get enough sleep — especially close to an inte
 rview date — and to exercise and eat properly. Take regular breaks to help
your mind integrate
Package: qbittorrent
Version: 3.1.10-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
When Open destination folder option is selected from the right-click menu
of an individual torrent after its download completion, nothing happens.
The expected behaviour is that the file manager (nautilus in my case since I
am using GNOME) opens the destination folder with the downloaded file/folder
selected.
But this doesn't work as expected.
Dear Maintainer,
This bug is still present in 3.14.0-1 and evince crashes when directly
opening it without actually opening any document. But when opening a
document with evince, it doesn't crash. Perhaps as the OP has suggested, the
issue could be with showing the recent documents list which happens only
when evince is opened without opening any document.
Bug#749965: icedove: Opening Help-Release Notes opens an invalid, broken link
2014-05-31 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: icedove
Version: 30.0~b1-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
I have installed the latest Thunderbird on my Debian unstable amd64 system and
I found that on clicking the Tools-Release Notes it opens a broken, invalid
link on live.mozillamessaging.com -
http://live.mozillamessaging.com/icedove/releasenotes?locale=en-USversion=30.0os=Linuxbuildid=20140530163109.
 This link is broken and hence returns a 404.
The correct link would be
http://live.mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird/releasenotes?locale=en-USversion=30.0os=Linuxbuildid=20140530163109,
 which obviously refers to the release notes of Thunderbird and not Icedove. If
that is not okay, please provide a separate Release Notes page for Icedove.
Bug#749982: yasnippet: python-mode snippets expand with wrong indentation
2014-05-31 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: yasnippet
Version: 0.6.1c-1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
I have installed yasnippet on my Debian unstable installation and
tried to use yasnippet snippets in python-mode while editing python
files. I found that a few templates got expanded with wrong
indentation though the snippet file seems to have the correct
indentation.
Here are some examples:
proptab expanded to
def foo():
doc = Doc string
def fget(self):
return self._foo
def fset(self, value):
self._foo = value
def fdel(self):
del self._foo
return locals()
foo = property(**foo())
instead of
def foo():
doc = Doc string
def fget(self):
return self._foo
def fset(self, value):
self._foo = value
def fdel(self):
del self._foo
return locals()
foo = property(**foo())
This issue is there even in the snippets like propg, propsg and etc.
Bug#746935: RFP: libapache2-mod-python -- Mod_python is an Apache module that embeds the Python interpreter within the server and helps run web applications written in python
  Description : Mod_python is an Apache module that embeds the Python
interpreter within the server and helps run web applications written in python
Mod_python is an Apache module that embeds the Python interpreter within the
server. With mod_python you can write web-based applications in Python that
will run many times faster than traditional CGI and will have access to
advanced features such as ability to retain database connections and other data
between hits and access to Apache internals.
This package is already maintained by Debian Python Modules Team
python-modules-t...@lists.alioth.debian.org and there are upstream releases
that have not been packaged in Debian. I would love to see the latest versions
packaged in Debian.
Bug#741017: cairo-dock: Actions in the shutdown applet don't work and return a logind error
2014-03-07 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: cairo-dock
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
I installed cairo-dock (the latest version available in unstable) on my Debian
debian unstable system (a machine different to the one I am reporting the bug
from). The shutdown applet gives a lot of options like Shutdown, logout and
etc., but none of them work. On selecting any of those options I get a message
like Unable to perform action with something related to logind also mentioned.
When using these options from the system menu, they work fine. If any more
information is needed, I will provide it.
2013-11-05 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.8.4-4
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
I have updated to the latest packages on my Debian Sid amd64 installation. On
logging and starting of the GNOME desktop, the volume indicator shows for a
second or two and then disappears.
I also tried reloading the GNOME environment by using Alt+F2 and typing 'r'
command. Then the volume indicator shows up. But on trying to adjust the volume
it disappears again.
testing and then to sid. Then used tasksel to install laptop tools and
Bug#708953: vlc: VLC open in single instance mode doesn't play files opened from nautilus Open with VLC
2013-05-19 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.6-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
I have VLC configured to run in single instance mode and when one instance of
VLC is open and I try to play a file from nautilus by selecting Open with VLC
media player from the right-click menu, it doesn't play the file at all. The
same thing works fine if VLC is not open and it opens a new instance. Opening
the new file from the VLC menu works fine as well.
Bug#682398: ITP: cows-and-bulls -- Words-based version of the cows and bulls game
2012-07-22 Thread L. Guruprasad
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: L. Guruprasad lgp171...@gmail.com
* Package name: cows-and-bulls
  Version : 1.0
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : Words-based version of the cows and bulls game
This is a words-based version of the 'Cows and bulls' guessing game. The user
has to guess the word chosen by the game by guessing words of the same
length. The game will reply to each guess by informing the user about the
number of cows (alphabets in the word chosen by the game that are in the word
guessed by the user in the exact same position) and bulls (alphabets in the
word chosen by the game that are in the word guessed by the user in a wrong
position). The user has to guess the correct word by improving the guesses
based on the game's feedback and eventually guess the word chosen by the game.
