Most likely, but a Debian upgrade which takes the system into a state which requires a database upgrade while removing the ability to make a backup may justify a Debian News entry so users can back out of the software upgrade and perform the backup. Upgraded and loaded database. Spat error, lost new record. could you get into detail with the last bit? - when was the new record created? - how was it lost? On completing the database migration I created a new person, added birth and death information including a new death location and notes, and clicked OK. This resulted in the python error referred to in the headline which left the new person with the OK button greyed out and no way to save it. The record was lost. Simon Paillard wrote: reassign 402400 mirrors Did you see such an error recently ? Yes, although not as often as the GPG errors which I have seen every day this week. The GPG problem, at least, is not with the mirrors. The problem is that ISP's 'transparent' caches get out of sync and that the wget/dpkg/apt chain fails to use the 'no-cache' http option to force the cache to get an updated version of the index files on an error. When the GPG errors occur I find the cache is presenting Release and Release.gpg files which do not match. I can solve the problem by manually browsing the repository and reloading the relevant files http://security.debian.org/dists/etch/updates/Release http://security.debian.org/dists/etch/updates/Release.gpg while holding down the shift button in Firefox/iceweasel. I believe the MD5SUM errors are a downstream effect of the same problem. It would probably be more sensible to reassign this to dpkg than it is to assign it to mirrors. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#497385: 1.7.1+1.6.3 works on AMD32; 1.7.2 broken on AMD64
AMD32: Testing 1.7.1+1.63 was successful while my impression was that this was broken a day or two back. I could easily be thinking of 1.7.1 plain. Upgrading to 1.7.2 restored the "You need to upgrade your flash player" message. AMD64: In the interim I have upgraded mobo/processor/ram and installed an AMD64 system. Using 1.7.2 under the AMD64 system fails silently but does reserve the screen real estate for the flash content. No java[script] errors are reported. Bug#479224: locking firewall clobbers localhost
Tags: patch I've determined that this bug happens because Firestater locks the entire firewall including localhost. In some configurations (notably Ubuntu Hardy) this blocks an esound event generated by firestarter itself. I've generated a patch which allows such traffic through localhost while Firestarter is locked which allows Firestarter to unlock itself. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firestarter/+bug/184017 for more detail. In a perfect, future, world it may be possible to configure Firestarter's locked state from the GUI. --- scriptwriter.c.org 2005-01-30 01:32:08.0 +1300 +++ scriptwriter.c 2008-06-21 05:29:35.0 +1200 @@ -229,11 +229,13 @@ fprintf (f, "# Lock the firewall, blocking all traffic\n" "lock_firewall () {\n" + " $IPT -F;\n" + " $IPT -X\n" + " $IPT -A INPUT -i lo -s 127.0.0.1 -d 127.0.0.1 -j ACCEPT\n" + " $IPT -A OUTPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -d 127.0.0.1 -j ACCEPT\n" " $IPT -P INPUT DROP\n" " $IPT -P FORWARD DROP\n" " $IPT -P OUTPUT DROP\n" - " $IPT -F;\n" - " $IPT -X\n" " $IPT -Z\n" " retval=$?\n" " if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then\n"

Bug#463893: postgresql-8.3: please automate database upgrade between pgsql releases

We can then > discuss there what to do when the disk runs out of space, or the > upgrade fails, etc. I think it's important to make all upgrade processes as automatic as possible. It's these manual interventions which defeat many if not most people. We need to cater to users of applications who use postgres but who have never otherwise even heard of it and are unfamiliar with the commandline environment as well as the system programmers and database gurus. I think an automatic upgrade with an opportunity to not upgrade (for disk space, known problems, or whatever) is the way to go. If any resultant fallout is then addressed the world becomes a better place. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-3-k7 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_NZ.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages postgresql-8.3 depends on: ii libc6 2.7-6 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcomerr21.40.5-2 common error description library ii libkrb53 1.6.dfsg.3~beta1-2 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.7-4OpenLDAP libraries ii libpam0g 0.99.7.1-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpq58.3~rc2-1+b1 PostgreSQL C client library ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8g-4 SSL shared libraries ii libxml2 2.6.31.dfsg-1 GNOME XML library ii postgresql-client-8.3 8.3~rc2-1+b1 front-end programs for PostgreSQL ii postgresql-common 84 PostgreSQL database-cluster manage ii tzdata2007k-2time zone and daylight-saving time postgresql-8.3 recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#456149: [DebianGIS-dev] Bug#456149: gpsdrive: Doesn't display my altitude
Andreas Putzo wrote: On Dec 13 21:59, Andrew McMillan wrote: GPSDrive is not displaying any altitude reading from my GPS (a Garmin 60CSx). If I telnet to the gpsd port on my local machine I definitely do see my altitude coming through on the various data streams available. Does the GPS Status bar in the bottom right corner sometimes displays a 3D Fix which is needed to determine the altitude? The problem might be that gpsdrive switches to n/a in the altitude widget as soon as your gps device loses its 3D fix. If this happens frequently it might look as if there were no altitude information altogether. It would be helpful if you could provide a sample of collected nmea data for example by starting gpsd with -D2 or by reading nmea sentences directly from the device. Some GPSes send sentences containing 2D and 3D information every second. If your GPS sends a 2D sentence last, that could be what you are seeing most of the time. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#456152: [DebianGIS-dev] Bug#456152: gpsdrive: Can't override window size
Andreas Putzo wrote: Looks like this is a mistake in the manual page. The correct command line switch is now -g , for example: gpsdrive -g 800x600 Hi Andreas, Thanks very much for teaching me about -g. Sadly it's still quite badly broken, failing to correctly calculate the sizes for the various panels leaving critical values (lat, long etc) unreadable and failing to make the map the same size as the panel it's assigned to. Further, there are obvious map rendering errors using when using neither the no_dir nor expedia maps at wide zooms. The scale bar at the bottom right of the image appears to be approximately an order of decimal magnitude out. The map grabbing code seems buggy too. -s disables the splash screen shown at startup now and -r is no longer used, see also gpsdrive --help. The -g option does not appear in the help or the manpage, while the -s and -r options are incorrectly documented in both. Menus to configure mysql and pgsql seem to have disappeared and that support which remains seems broken. It's a shame that this very promising program seems to be becoming less functional with more development. Bug#425390: ok, so 2.0 is not in testing yet
but the workaround is giving me grief. I've can reproducibly revert to 1.5 but all attempts to then follow the steps to install 2.0 through up a popup saying something to the effect that another version of icedove is running, kill it or restart your system. There's nothing to kill, a new x zsession doesn't work, a reboot doesn't work. I can find no .pid file lurking. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#402400: MD5sum mismatches and GPG errors
Once again I argue that this issue is a release critical security issue. How can anyone have confidence in Debian as a whole when these problems remain unaddressed for so long and *SO MANY* bugs remain open against apt ? I urge developers to cease adding features to apt until many of the bugs are fixed. I fear it's time to start again at an elemental level and audit the structure of the program. This has the appearance of a time bomb which could destroy Debian. I have attached a file which shows both GPG errors and MD5SUM errors during an update I attempted this morning. Bug#385878: k3bsetup; cdrecord -> wodim transition
Given that cdrecord has been replaced by wodim, perhaps we should be talking about wodim instead. If we are already looking at wodim per http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=390083 then references in the dialogues need to be patched as well. At the moment k3bsetup is asking for my root password and then telling me it's not right. In the past it appeared to succeed with the su, but still failed to actually change the permissions on /usr/bin/cdrecord. Setting /usr/bin/wodim suid stops k3b from trying to fire up k3bsetup, but it doesn't find the drive, and is thus unusable. Gnomebaker seems to be working fine. I argue against removing k3bsetup as most, especially new, users will have trouble adding themselves to the cdrom group, let alone finding out that they need to. Perhaps k3bsetup could, perhaps optionally, add the user to the cdrom group instead of setting suid on the binaries. k3b Version: 0.12.17-2+b1 wodim Version: 5:1.0~pre4-1.1 regards Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#376817: apt complains
Given that this appears to be an update phasing problem between various servers/mirrors, is it feasible to add a behaviour whereby apt tries to use the same server that was used for the last update as a preferred source for packages to be upgraded at least for the first attempt and perhaps within a day or two of the update ? Should this behaviour be promulgated in the other package management systems (aptitude, synaptic ...) ? Is there an option to display the identity of source servers ? piwakawaka:~# apt-get source apt Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Need to get 1673kB of source archives. Not exactly; the situation is such that apt needs a consistent view of the archive in order to authenticate it (several different files must match), and intermediate caches don't always provide this consistency. When it's checking an MD5SUM it's looking at one file, when it's checking the gpg key it's looking at one file. I've noticed that the packages are uploaded to the servers after the index files. This means that you can get the index and then have to wait an hour say until the packages all turn up. Would this situation not be improved by the index files being uploaded, or made available, last ? Bug#376817: confirmation
I can confirm this behaviour. I am seeing occasional MD5SUM errors as well as GPG failures. Strangely it seems to work considerably better when not using the debug options suggested above. I have several times seen it flag MD5SUM errors where the expected MD5SUM and that computed are identical. Surely these errors should *never* be seen and must raise questions about the security of the entire distribution. regards Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I guess that would be ewe in kiwi parlance. The -q=n syntax is anomalous, every other option uses -x . I suggest that -q= be deprecated and that -qqq or -q n be encouraged instead. I think that would be great, and it's how things originally worked; unfortunately, this led to user complaints (see earlier in this bug log). And, predictably, it appears that adding a weird special case had unforseen side effects (who woulda thunk it!) You really expected me to actually read all that stuff ? I've figured out how to make aptitude -qq update work but without the =2 stuff. > {"quiet", 0, NULL, 'q'}, while((curopt=getopt_long(argc, argv, "DVZvhS:uiF:w:sO:fdyPt:qRro:", opts, NULL))!=-1) >case 'q': > ++quiet; > seen_quiet = true; > break; The problems I have reported elsehwere with weird stuff going on with cached package list files is preventing me grabbing the apt sources to see how it's done there. I think the next step in being able to parse the -q=2 syntax is to handle optopt somehow, but I completely unfamiliar with all that stuff. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=349974 is an example where bad syntax is not picked up (-q10). Could be merged, when this is sorted properly, that will be too. A side note: Attempting to compile aptitude throws up a linker error about not being able to find cppunit. I assume this should be added as a build-depends ? That should only happen when you run "make check" or do a package build, and libcppunit-dev is a build-depends already AFAIK. Which version are you trying to build and how? I'm playing with aptitude 0.4.1-1 grabbed from unstable. I read INSTALL and did ./configure, make and make install. There are a couple of other libraries that are required which ./configure threw up and which I installed but the requirement for libcppunit doesn't show up until ld is invoked. Merely minor drama. cheerio Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#217477: --quirk
this is still borken piwakawaka:~# aptitude -qq update Expected a number after -q=, got q piwakawaka:~# which is a lie, there was no -q= Here's the relevant code from main.cc in aptitude-0.4.1: case 'q': if(optarg == 0) ++quiet; else { if(*optarg == '=') ++optarg; if(*optarg == 0) { fprintf(stderr, _("Expected a number after -q=\n")); return -1; } char *tmp; quiet = strtol(optarg, &tmp, 0); if(*tmp != '\0') { fprintf(stderr, _("Expected a number after -q=, got %s\n"), optarg); return -1; } } seen_quiet = true; break; Obviously the block dealing with the parameters needs to be defined contingent on the existance of the "=". case 'q': if(optarg == 0) ++quiet; else { if(*optarg == '=') { ++optarg; if(*optarg == 0) { fprintf(stderr, _("Expected a number after -q=\n")); return -1; } char *tmp; quiet = strtol(optarg, &tmp, 0); if(*tmp != '\0') { fprintf(stderr, _("Expected a number after -q=, got %s\n"), optarg); return -1; } } } seen_quiet = true; break; which then gives the behaviour where aptitude -q -q moo aptitude -q=2 moo aptitude -vVsq upgrade work while aptitude -qq moo aptitude -qvvv moo aptitude -qvVs upgrade fail as all options after the first q are ignored. I also changed the line {"quiet", 2, NULL, 'q'}, in opts[]={ to {"quiet", 0, NULL, 'q'}, but it still doesn't behave as I would expect. The -q=n syntax is anomalous, every other option uses -x . I suggest that -q= be deprecated and that -qqq or -q n be encouraged instead. I can't spend any more time on this now and I'm at almost all at sea. Perhaps a proficient coder could have a look-see. A side note: Attempting to compile aptitude throws up a linker error about not being able to find cppunit. I assume this should be added as a build-depends ? The docs may need some attention after all this. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#330371: scsi: unknown opcode 0x01
Thank you Michal, I can confirm that "scsi: unknown opcode 0x01" appears in my dmesg. The error message output was provided as requested. My naievete meant that I couldn't tell which of the many error messages in the output were significant. My instinct was that the one about suid not being set was the problem. I tried to look at the install scripts to see if there had been a change there, but the fog defeated me. I have attempted to apply your one-liner, I downloaded the source, applied the patch (manually), ran 'make' and then 'make install', but no joy. There's a bunch of stuff talking about gnu make being bugridden, and so I tried the Gmake thing referred to in README.compile but gmake (which it calls) is not in the distribution. I installed smake, and tried to compile and install using this as recommended by the author, but again no joy. Then I discovered that a binary had in fact been created, buried in obj, but had not been installed into the system. I copied this to /usr/bin and whaddya know, it seems to work. Perhaps a brief addition to debian/README.debian explaining the official technique for compiling and installing the package for debian would be useful, perhaps with a link from README.debian among all the existing README.* files too. Thank you again for your patch. regards Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#332566: workaround
Folks with systems broken by this may get back on the road by removing xserver-common and reinstalling the old xserver-xfree86 and xserver-common using dpkg -i, perhaps with suitable --force options. The old packages are gone from the main archive, but can still be wgot from ftp://debian.paradise.net.nz/debian/pool/main/x/xfree86/xserver-common_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14_i386.deb ftp://debian.paradise.net.nz/debian/pool/main/x/xfree86/xserver-xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14_i386.deb being a mirror which seems to have a broken updating system. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#249499: CRON[19820]: Critical error - immediate abort
Hi folks, At the same time as the upload fixing this bug was applied to my system most if not all cron jobs started dying with the error in the topic. So I did and force-reloaded cron which made the error message go away. I haven't consciously done anything that would cause this and -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 289 Jul 6 02:45 /etc/pam.d/cron.critical-error is well in the past. Is something perhaps broken in this upload ? all the best Mark
