Bug#362266: ITP: scribus-ng -- developmental version of the desktop publishing program Scribus
* Steve Greenland [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-04-15 08:58:31 -0500]: On 12-Apr-06, 23:44 (CDT), Oleksandr Moskalenko [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This package contains new generation branch of scribus that is still in active development, but is a lot more featureful compared to the stable 1.2.x branch (scribus package) and sufficiently stable to warrant its inclusion into the Debian distribution. Then why not just upload it as the new version of 'scribus' in unstable? Why do we need a whole new package? Steve Steve, I've been maintaining separate packages of stable and developmental trees of scribus in an upstream repository for more then a year and decided to introduce scribus-ng into the Debian archive after a long deliberation. The experience shows that the way Scribus is developed and usage patterns of different classes of Scribus users e.g. casual versus professional publishers ratify having two packages. My personal communications with the upstream developers and users of the -ng package and respective bug handling over a long time also supports this conclusion. For example, scribus-ng has features that some users must have for certain projects, but using it may require more effort then what many casual users expect to produce. Developmental timetable also calls for disruptive changes in the next few point releases before 1.4 is finished. Then, there is the question of people who wouldn't use anything outside the main Debian archive i.e. upstream repositories and yet would benefit from using Scribus 1.3.x series. More widespread testing would also be a plus for the development as the recent experience of the upstream team with porting Scribus 1.3.x to Windows shows. Bug#362266: ITP: scribus-ng -- developmental version of the desktop publishing program Scribus
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Oleksandr Moskalenko [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Package name: scribus-ng Version : 1.3.3.1 Upstream Author : Scribus development team [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://www.scribus.net/ * License : GPLv2 Programming Lang: C++ Description : Developmental branch of the document layout program Scribus Scribus is an open source desktop page layout program with the aim of producing commercial grade output in PDF and Postscript, primarily, though not exclusively for Linux. This package contains new generation branch of scribus that is still in active development, but is a lot more featureful compared to the stable 1.2.x branch (scribus package) and sufficiently stable to warrant its inclusion into the Debian distribution. Scribus can be used for many tasks; from brochure design to newspapers, magazines, newsletters and posters to technical documentation. It has sophisticated page layout features like precision placing and rotating of text and/or images on a page, manual kerning of type, bezier curves polygons, precision placement of objects, layering with RGB and CMYK custom colors. The Scribus document file format is XML-based. Unlike proprietary binary file formats, even damaged documents, can be recovered with a simple text editor. Scribus supports professional DTP features, such as CMYK color and a color management system to soft proof images for high quality color printing, flexible PDF creation options, Encapsulated PostScript import/export and creation of 4 color separations, import of EPS/PS and SVG as native vector graphics, Unicode text including right to left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew via freetype. Graphic formats which can be placed in Scribus as images include PDF, Encapsulated Post Script (eps), TIFF, JPEG, PNG and XPixMap(xpm), and any bitmap type supported by QT3. Printing, PDF and SVG creation are done via custom driver libraries and plug-ins, giving Scribus inventive features: the abilities to include presentation effects with PDF output, fully scriptable interactive PDF forms, SVG vector file output. The internal printer drivers fully support Level 2 and Level 3/PDF 1.4 postscript features including transparency and font embedding. When run from KDE, Drag and Drop, for example from desktop to the canvas, is enabled. There is easy to use drag and drop scrapbook for frequently used items such as text blocks, pictures and custom shaped frames. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-mrb319 Locale: LANG=uk_UA.KOI8-U, LC_CTYPE=uk_UA.KOI8-U (charmap=KOI8-U) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#356766: quixote: file conflict with python2.3-quixote
* Lars Wirzenius [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-03-14 01:05:20 +0200]: Package: quixote Version: 2.4-1 When testing quixote with piuparts, I get the following error: Unpacking python2.3-quixote (from .../python2.3-quixote_2.4-1_i386.deb) ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/python2.3-quixote_2.4-1_i386.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/quixote/sendmail.py', which is also in package quixote One of the packages probably contains that file by mistake? -- The most difficult thing in programming is to be simple and straightforward. Lars, Thank you for the piuparts reports. I'll rectify the first problem with the wrong python version in a postinst (#356764), of course. However, I'm not so sure about the report above. The current quixote package does not contain any scripts. So, I think that pipuparts is trying to upgrade from the monolithic quixote-2.3 package to the new split 2.4 (quixote (stub)/python2.3-quixote/python2.4-quixote). I wonder if you agree and what action should I take if that's the case. Maybe I should add a Replaces: quixote ( 2.4) field to the debian/control file entries for python2.3-quixote and python2.4-quixote? This is quite unpleasant for me as I use a specific tab order for various web applications I need to keep open all the time and is logically a bug since the original order should be preserved in any case or an option should be given for choosing the new order. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.13-20050829-mrb319 Locale: LANG=uk_UA.KOI8-U, LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1 (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages konqueror depends on: ii kcontrol 4:3.4.2-3 control center for KDE ii kdebase-kio-plugins 4:3.4.2-3 core I/O slaves for KDE ii kdelibs4c24:3.4.2-4 core libraries for all KDE applica ii kdesktop 4:3.4.2-3 miscellaneous binaries and files f ii kfind 4:3.4.2-3 file-find utility for KDE ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libaudio2 1.7-3 The Network Audio System (NAS). Bug#326990: libqt3-mt: Spinbox code is broken
Package: libqt3-mt Version: 3:3.3.4-7 Severity: normal I am packaging scribus. It seems to present certain numbers in an incorrect form i.e. 12.:0 instead of 13 in a spinbox. Most of the time it also resets to 1 instead of advancing to such numbers. All efforts to locate the bug upstream pointed to Qt3. For more information please take a look at http://bugs.scribus.net/view.php?id=2525. I've also built a debugging version of scribus-cvs located at http://debian.tagancha.org/download. This is a test package from newer code then what is in Debian, but the bug is both. I used it to try helping upstream locate the bug, though we weren't successful. Installation of qt3 3.3.5 on the original reporter's machine fixed the problem. Bug#316111: Bug status check
Hello Peer, Oleksandr Moskalenko schrieb: Thank you for your attention to this bug. As you supposed, I do not want to install from unstable at this time. Thanks also for your detailed work instruction detailed via the supplied URL. It will certainly take me some time to do this, since I first want to understand what the instructions do. The other day, another debian developer asked me to add an entry to the apt sources list, and then pushed some packet not-from-stable on my machine without telling me beforehand what happend, which -- while it solved the problem at hand -- I did not appreciate. So I have to be careful before adventuring around with commands I don't understand yet. Reading und understanding all the man-pages and other doc's takes much time, which I cannot supply in a short time frame. I'm not a developer in the debian sense so far, still having blanks in my understanding of the system. I hope you understand this. Maybe it is possible to verify the bug with the stable version? Bug#316111: (no subject)
Hmm, I didn't get a message about this report from the BTS. I guess it got lost in the great BTS turmoil a couple of days ago. Anyways, I cannot confirm this report on the current 1.2.1+cvs. Please update your package and test for this again. If you don't mind you could get the latest package from one of the two repositories I maintain upstream as there is an unfortunate slowdown in getting an updated package into Unstable at the moment. Add the following source lines to you /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://debian.scribus.net/debian/ unstable/ deb-src http://debian.scribus.net/debian/ unstable/ deb http://debian.tagancha.org/scribus unstable/ deb-src http://debian.tagancha.org/scribus unstable/ Run the usual apt-get update; apt-get install scribus. As I see that you have a stable system. Since Testing/Unstable has libgcc1 at 4.0.0 now, if you really don't want to install anything from Testing you'll have to rebuild the package. It's not hard. See my message to the Scribus mailing list at http://irc.altmuehlnet.de/pipermail/scribus/2005-June/011710.html. By the way - new 1.3cvs series is pretty usable already. Bug#297164: More info needed
Ladislav, I've attempted testing of this bug, but it seems to me that the behavior of the non-breaking space is the same whether it is after a dash or after a word entirely consisting of alpha characters. Maybe you could be a bit more specific to help me understand what is wrong. Currently, I see that when I decrease the text frame width the characters and hard spaces just get shifted down one by one regardless of what came before them. Bug#299803: check
Hello Olivier, I would like to make sure you are not still having problems with it and got help via IRC in #scribus or via the scribus mailing list. I apologise for not answering to you soon after receiving the bug report. The short answer is: as long as you see C-C|*-T|* in the Help/About Scribus dialog box in scribus that first C means that scribus was properly compiled with color management support. Please read the http://wiki.scribus.net/index.php/Getting_and_installing_ICC_profiles to learn step-by-step how to set up color profiles to be used by Scribus. Regards, Alex. P.S.: I plan to close this bug report as it is not actually about a bug in scribus packaging or the program itself. Bug#302236: konqueror: crash on the back button click when it is auto-opening a pdf
Package: konqueror Version: 4:3.3.2-1 Severity: normal In the process of my work I download a large number of articles from scientific journal sites. Konqueror reliably crashes if I click on the back button while it is auto-loading a pdf file linked from the article download page. However, the crash happens after a certain time of konqueror usage and with several tabs open, which I cannot replicate. I just know it will crash, but can't predict how soon. This will make debugging difficult unless I build kdebase with debugging symbols, which is not going to be easy I guess. So, this bug caused work loss for me a number of times, but I'll set the severity to normal due to the difficulty of replication. The pdf is usually loaded with JavaScript like this: function loadPDF() { setPDFLoadedFlag(); // Scan through all links on page looking for the one that // matches the PDF download. Why do we do this arcane trick // instead of just duplicating the URL? Because of a // situation where the page is being proxied and passed through // a link rewriter, which can't handle JavaScript. This // bit of code, by determining the autoload URL at runtime, // picks up the rewritten URL and uses that. // (mferber 11/19/03) for (i = 0; i document.links.length; i++) { link = document.links[i]; path = link.pathname; if ((path.length = id.length + 4 path.substring(path.length - id.length - 4) == id + .pdf) || (path.length = mjid.length + 4 path.substring(path.length - mjid.length - 4) == mjid + .pdf)) { // found match window.location = link.href; break; } } } -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-20050303-mrb319 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-15 (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages konqueror depends on: ii kcontrol 4:3.3.2-1 KDE Control Center ii kdebase-kio-plugins 4:3.3.2-1 KDE I/O Slaves ii kdelibs4 4:3.3.2-4.0.2 KDE core libraries ii kdesktop 4:3.3.2-1 KDE Desktop ii kfind4:3.3.2-1 KDE File Find Utility ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libc62.3.2.ds1-20GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.7.0-6 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.4.3-12 GCC support library ii libice6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libidn11 0.5.13-1.0 GNU libidn library, implementation ii libjpeg626b-10 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkonq4 4:3.3.2-1 Core libraries for KDE's file mana ii libpcre3 5.0-1 Perl 5 Compatible Regular Expressi ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-1 PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt3:3.3.3-8 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libsm6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 X Window System Session Management ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.5-12 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxrender1 0.8.3-7 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs4.3.0.dfsg.1-12 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-4 compression library - runtime -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#283826: scribus: general documentation is missing...
* Daniel Freedman [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-12-01 13:19:51 -0500]: Alex, Okay, thanks so much. Yeah, I saw the clause on restrictions against paper distribution and wondered about that, but I guess I meant to imply that if not free enough for Debian main, it was at least suitable for non-free. Sorry i didn't properly convey this. Thanks for shepharding an important package. Best, Daniel Daniel, As of the Scribus 1.2.1 release I have prepared two new packages that accompany scribus. scribus-template is a set of additional templates and scribus-doc is the one you are likely to be interested in. It contains English language general documentation for Scribus. Both new packages are in the new package queue, so it will take them some time to get into the Debian archives, non-free in the case of scribus-doc. However, if you are interested, you can email me privately or visit #scribus channel on Freenode to find out the location of my staging repository that contains these packages and is accessible via apt-get. Regards, Alex. On Wed, Dec 01, 2004, Oleksandr Moskalenko wrote: * Daniel Freedman [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-12-01 12:15:24 -0500]: Subject: scribus: general documentation is missing... Package: scribus Version: 1.2.0.final+cvs20041026-1 Severity: normal Hi, The general scribus documentation (the Scribus Manual, NOT the Scripter Manual) is not included as part of the package. It appears that this used to be included as the package scribus-doc-en|fr|de, but that package was subsumed by scribus proper. Unfortunately, I can only now find the Scripter Manual. The Scribus Manual is available online from : http://ahnews.music.salford.ac.uk/scribus/documentation/ It is licensed under the Open Publication License which appears to meet DFSG requirements. It would be nice if it could be included in future releases of the scribus package. Thanks so much, Daniel Daniel, Up until few days ago scribus documentation has not been available in a form suitable for the internal help browser. Therefore, it was only present at http://docs.scribus.net. As of the last week the documentation has been reformatted and included into the cvs source. However, the OPL license is not DFSG-free as was discussed on the debian-legal mailing list at my urging some time ago. You can find the relevant discussion in the mailing list archives. Since the OPL license used for Scribus documentation includes an optional restrictive clause it cannot be even considered a Free license at all. I respect both the choice of Scribus developers and the DFSG, so my plan is to prepare a scribus-doc package that would go into the non-free archive.
