Bug#1035382: Bookworm amd64 live install ISO RC1 and RC2 install pointless raspi-firmware package

2023-05-02 Thread Paul Seelig
Package: debian-live
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i
X-Debbugs-Cc: think...@rumbero.org

Installation of Bookworm RC1+2 using amd64 live install ISO[1] includes package
'raspi-firmware', which in this context is a useless waste of space. It's
presence results in the creation of a /boot/firmware/ directory of more than
100MB and which serves no purpose for a amd64 system. Manually purging the
package leaves the pointless /boot/firmware/ directory in place.

For debugging purposes, please refer to the installer logs available via [2].

Please ensure the 'raspi-firmware' package is only included with live ISO
variants where it actually makes sense.

Thanks,
P.Seelig

Bug#1035360: bookworm RC2 installation leaves luks encrypted system in unbootable state

2023-05-01 Thread Paul Seelig
Package: debian-installer
Severity: grave
X-Debbugs-Cc: think...@rumbero.org

Hi all,

using the xfce4 based RC2 live ISO image[1], on a Thinkpad T480 (16GB RAM/256GB
NVME/INTEL GRAPHICS ONLY) installation of Debian in an luks encrypted LVM was
performed.

Apparently, the required cryptsetup-initramfs packages were removed from the
system during the last instalation stages, rendering the resulting system
unbootable.
Manual intervention was required to fix the issue from a live rescue system,
something a novice user will never be able to accomplish.

The same issue was already note with the prior RC1 variant of this bookworm
live ISO. It can be reliably reproduced.
Attached installation logs should be sufficiently verbose about what actually
happened underneath.

Bug#824835: tex-common: fmtutil fails

2016-05-21 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi,

i was bitten by the same issue.

Analyzing the various /tmp/fmtutil.* files created during installation
trials, i stumbled over the line stating:

! I can't find file `syst-tex.mkii'.

Checking with apt-file, syst-tex.mkii appeared to be contained in two
packages, namely 'context' and 'texlive-latex-base'. Apparently there
was a change, as this file is no longer part of texlive-latex-base, but
only contained in context, which was not installed before on my systems.

After adding the context package, all remaining packages configured just
fine.

Looks as if we now also require to have context installed.

Regards,
Paul

Bug#284274: Re: Bug#284274: Patch for the hardlink replacement bug request

2013-03-10 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi,

for the time being, it would probably be much more reasonable to limit
that function to the current local filesystem only, instead of trying to
crack a nut with a sledgehammer.

Finding duplicates over filesystems should be considered being a special
use case which could/should be handled separately.

In the meantime, lots of users (e.g. not only yours truly) would be very
happy, if not even delighted, if they were able to deduplicate files via
hardlinking within the boundaries of a single file system.

Best regards,
Paul

Bug#610215: localepurge: Could remove Scribus translation files

2011-01-16 Thread Paul Seelig
Hello,

as i found out, this localization file location is not limited to
scribus in its both variations, but also holds true for various other qt
based packages. Among these are for example the packages for hydrogen,
virtualbox*, qt4, skype, pdfedit, qdacco, mscore, djvu, canorus,
calibre, avidemux, googleearth, and maybe lots others i am not aware of
myself.

Instead of burdening localepurge with tracking such non-standard
localization files, it would be advisable to have the affected packages
fix the location of these translation files. In the long run this would
be a cleaner solution.

Other than that, dpkg already includes a feature to exclude specific
files from any deb package from installation, rendering localepurge
itself rather pointless these days. There is a nice article about this
dpkg feature which is mentioned in wishlist bug #603587 and can be found at

www.raphaelhertzog.com/2010/11/15/save-disk-space-by-excluding-useless-files-with-dpkg

In fact, localepurge should be considered obsolete now, and it would be
great if it could be replaced by some configuration frontend for the
above mentioned dpkg exclude/include feature.

Thanks
Paul

sorry for the late reply!

Yes, this somewhat remedies the situation for me, although i still had
to modify the mc.keymap.emacs file to more closely match the former key
bindings of the old mcedit emacs mode.

Thanks a lot!

Bug#563683: localepurge: does not preserve configuration on upgrade

2010-01-04 Thread Paul Seelig
Hello Jakub,

i am unable to reproduce this behavior, and i think you should
definitely abstain from manually editing this configuration file.
You are not supposed to touch any configuration file which is handled
via debconf.

Please try to purge the package from your system, and then reinstall and
reconfigure it via the standard debconf way. Does this solve the issue?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Bug#563757: mc: emacs key bindings silently removed from internal editor

2010-01-04 Thread Paul Seelig
Package: mc
Version: 3:4.7.0-1
Severity: important

After upgrading mc from version 4.7.0-pre1-3 to the currrent 4.7.0-1 there
is no more the old mcedit which was able to handle emacs key bindings. This
was an unexpected and completely undocumented change, which severely harms
years of trained muscle memory for mc users. This is absolutely annoying!

Comparing the ./edit sub directory of both versions source tree shows that
all emacs was obviously completely removed. This crime has obviously been
commited by the upstream authors. This is not the good old mcedit anymore!
Please revert this in a future release!

I have now put mc-4.7.0-pre1-3 on hold, and will stick to it until this issue
has been dealt with.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Bug#560238: net.ipv6.bindv6only configuration breaks xdmcp

Both server and client had this very same setting and, acting as both
server and client, none of both could see each other anymore. Once i
removed the file from one of them, and after a reboot, it could be seen
from the other. Removing the same file on the other side, and after
having rebooted it too, it was also seen again on the network.

While the functionality was broken, it was not even possible to connect
a local session to localhost, when it was connected under either its IP,
or via 127.0.0.1, or its very own hostname. Interestingly enough it
worked when trying to connect to "localhost".

Thanks for all your efforts!

# thanks

Hi,

just want to remark that i actualy had to move the newly created file
/etc/sysctl.d/bindv6only.conf out of the way in order to restore the
xdmcp functionality it completely broke.

If you introduce new configuration files containing untested settings
which might break stuff like xdmcp, please be very careful. Please do
ship it in a neutral way, e.g. for formerly unrequired configuration
items having the settings conveniently commented out, or better even,
ship them without creating any unexpected and obscure changes to the
system behavior. It took me much more time i could currently afford to
find out what the breakage was caused by.

Thanks a lot for your work!

After having successfully rebooted today with 24-2, i took a security
copy of the properly working grub.cfg, and installed 25-1, making sure
that grub.cfg is updated. After that i compared both with each other,
and there was not a single difference.

Hmmm, so maybe here we have the issue? If running grub-install again is
definitely required for a workable boot configuration, then this might
be the point where it fails. I never saw any debconf prompt, and thus
didn't recognize the need to run grub-install. I have had configured
debconf to never ask me any questions with a priority less than medium.
But even after setting it to the lowest possible option i was not shown
any prompt asking to run grub-install.

What i did now was to manually run grub-install on the drive, in order
to make sure that grub is definitely updated. And this finally resulted
in a properly bootable system.

Thanks for your help!

Bug#557992: grub-pc: Booting is completely broken

2009-11-28 Thread Paul Seelig
Well, if upgrading to 25-1 does not by itself result in a working boot
configuration, it defintely shouldn't be the user who should be held
responsible to make sure that it works. As an end user, i do expect
that the upgrade does work without any further intervention. If 25-1
does not work although you think it should, then it is simply broken.

For what it's worth, i didn't run any manual grub-install while before
upgrading to 25-1. In case it is required for grub2 to work after the
upgrade, it should be done automagically via the postinst without any
need for user intervention.

Thanks a lot for you work and effort!

Luckily i still had 1.97+20091124-2 in the apt cache, and manually
downgrading to it "solved" the issue for the time being.

To me it looks like something went very wrong with the source code
somewhere between 1.97+20091124-2 and 1.97+20091125-1 which would be
worthwhile to investigate.

Bug#454658: localepurge: Remove dangling symlinks in /usr/share/man and /etc/alternatives

2007-12-16 Thread Paul Seelig

Hello Behan,

sorry for answering so late, but better late than never... ;)

Thanks a lot for your patch, although i have decided not to include it
in localepurge. The reason to decide against is simply that i'd like
localepurge to stay what it's name suggests. While i think that your
idea is quite interesting i don't think it fits into the scope of
localepurge.

May i suggest something else? The mechanism is aleady there and there is
no need to have to rely on localepurge to take advantage of it. So the
following should perfectly integrate your idea with apt: create a file
named like e.g. /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99-danglsyms containing following lines:

-snip
// Get rid of dangling symlinks after package installation

DPkg

{

Post-Invoke {"if [ -x /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms ] && [ $(ps w -p "$PPID"
| grep -c symlinks) != 1 ]; then /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms; else exit 0;
fi";};

};

-snip

And then put the code snippet you sent me into a separate executable
shell script called /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms accordingly.

I think this would be a more appropriate solution than bundling
everything and the kitchen sink with localepurge. ;)

Best regards
P. *8^)

As I was using symlinks(1) to clean up /usr/share/man and
/etc/alternatives this morning, I thought how convenient it would be to
have this optionally performed by localepurge at the end.

Here is a patch which runs "symlinks -r -d" on the the appropriate
directories if "SYMLINKS" is specified in the /etc/locale.nopurge file.

Bug#431522: depends on non-essential package ucf in postrm

2007-12-10 Thread Paul Seelig

Hello Frank,

thanks a lot for your actions! Your NMU is very appreciated!

Since my move from Germany to Spain one year ago i have almost no time
to care for this package. I'm looking forward to be able to take better
care again starting end of next January, when the biggest burdens here
are finally(!) taken care of.

Thanks a lot for your kind help!

P. *8^)

Frank S. Thomas wrote:

Hello Paul,

I have prepared a non-maintainer upload to fix this bug (#431522) and an other
serious issue: po-debconf is listed in Build-Depends-Indep instead of
Build-Depends although it is required for "debian/rules clean". Debian Policy
7.6 requires that dependencies that are required for the clean target must be
listed in Build-Depends. My NMU packages and the diff to your last upload
(which is also attached to this mail) is available at:

  http://people.debian.org/~fst/NMUs/localepurge/
  http://people.debian.org/~fst/NMUs/localepurge_0.5.9_0.5.9-0.1.diff

Although we are currently in an everlasting BSP with a 0-day NMU policy (see
[1]), I have uploaded my NMU to DELAYED/7-day for your convenience if you
want to cancel my NMU. I hope this in your interest and you do not feel
threatened by my NMU.

Bug#398890: O: ethiop

2006-11-16 Thread Paul Seelig
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Unfortunately, i have no use anymore for this package and therefore won't
keep maintaining it. A new maintainer is needed, preferably with an
Ethiopian language background, if at all possible.

Maybe it would even be better to completely remove the package from the
Debian archive. It is already included in the upstream source tar ball for
texlive which is also part of the Debian archive.

Thanks!

Actually, i was already thinking about orphaning this package since i
have no use for it at all anymore. There are two options for me:

a. Properly orphan the package in the hope that someone else takes over.

b. Someone else simply officially takes over maintenance for this
package without the need to bother about orphaning it before.

I've CC'ed debian-devel in the hope that someone steps forward to take
it over. Thanks.

Bug#387505: gworkspace.app: Debian package version is very outdated

2006-09-14 Thread Paul Seelig
Package: gworkspace.app
Severity: normal

Is this package still properly maintained?

The current Debian package of gworkspace.app is at version 0.7.0 which
originally dates from 18 Mar 2005, the good old times of the last Debian
stable release. In the meantime, gworkspace.app has evolved considerably
and is at stable upstream release version 0.8.3 since August 31 2006, but
the the Debian package for unstable has only seen some recompilations of
the outdated version from stable.

It would be really nice if a current version could be shipped with the next
stable Debian release. Actually it would be even nicer, if all of the
GNUstep related environment would be completely up to date.

Thanks, P. *8^)

Bug#385338: wish: dpkg-reconfigure localepurge to select when to run localepurge automatically

2006-08-30 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi João!

Like Steve Greenland pointed out on the debian-devel list a few hours ago,
the desired functionality could be easily achieved by simply removing the
associated file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99-localepurge after installation of
localepurge. This file triggers the execution of /usr/sbin/localepurge
after each dpkg install action.
   Cheers, P. *8^)

Sorry, but i won't inlude this. It surely sounds like a good idea and all,
but all this user friendly configuration facilities are starting to become
more than a nuisance for me.

It has started to take more time and thought than the main functionality i
was primarily interested in. My personal goal with this program has since
long been reached and i really don't want to bother about extending it
anymore. Actually i was already thinking about ripping out all the debconf
facilities and going back to plain old fashioned manual configuration via
plain text configuration file. But i can imagine the outcry of the user
base, which seems to have grown pretty large by now.

Maybe it's time to simply give up on it so that someone else with more time
and ambition might want to maintain it for Debian. Any takers?

Bug#373186: localepurge: postinstall bailing out on missing /dev/tty in noninteractive installs

2006-06-14 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi Michael!

I just tried reinstalling localepurge with

 # DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get --reinstall install localepurge

which works flawlessly.

Please be more verbose:

 - Which package is this cron file from? I can't find any reference to it
   even searching with apt-file.

 - What is the error messsage that makes you believe that localepurge's
postinst is to be blamed? Could you please record such a failing
installation using /usr/bin/script and send me the output?

 - And how come that your system has no /dev/tty at all? Isn't this the
   actual problem?

And please be as detailed as possible so that i don't need to ask any
further questions and to prevent any guessing on my part. Writing emails is
very time consuming.
   Thank you, P. *8^)

These files are not explicitly created in any of localepurge's scripts. All
temp files which are explicitely created on behalf of the scripts are
deleted. The ones you notice are leftovers of debconf for which i see no
remedy.

The preinst as of now no longer exists.

I'll close the bug with the next upload of localepurge.

I did a quick 'apt-get source sysvinit', grepped and commented all strip
commands in debian/rules, and removed debian/patches/30_strip.dpatch
together with it's entry in the accompanying debian/patches/00list. But the
result is still a stripped last binary and i didn't want to investigate any
further. The file valgrind_selfbuilt_sysvinit_2.86.ds1-14.1_i386.log
contains the results running valgrind with the selfbuilt package.

The compiler used for building the package was "gcc version 4.0.4 20060507
(prerelease) (Debian 4.0.3-3)", according to gcc -v.

learning how to use it. Please forgive me that and please give me a
suitable command line to enter for doing this.

The Debian system on which this happened is an up to date unstable.
I presume that i have to deinstall libsafe before?

Bug#368603: localepurge: typo in package description

2006-05-23 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi Lior!

Well, the idea behind a wordplay is to vary a familiar word with a humorous
twist. I like that! :-)

Actually i'm not the first and only package maintainer using this word. Try
"grep -i15 automagic /var/lib/dpkg/available | grep ^Package" to identify the
package of the other jesters.
   Cheers, P. *8^)

Bug#368603: localepurge: typo in package description

2006-05-23 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi Lior!

This is no typo, but quite intentional. It is a wordplay composed of the
words 'automatic' and 'magically'. For explanation please see

Bug#322169: localepurge: debconf is no registry

Sorry, but i've no time to care about this. Since the bugs in question
don't render the functionality of the package unusable, i don't consider
this to be very urgent either. If anybody would like to, i wouldn't mind if
someone would take care of it in my place.

Maybe the debconf functionality should simply be removed again.
Userfriendlyness is a can of worms...

Do you really believe, that etch wil be released before 2008?
SCNR ;-)

Same here. It broke the keyboard mapping and the unability to switch to a
virtual terminal seems to be just one consequence. Manually updating
xlibs-data fixed it for me. Looks like a proper Depends is missing
somewhere...

Bug#222232: Support for cruft?

2005-08-21 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi Marcin,

just a short note: unfortunately i lack the time to bother about such
enhancements. But i wouldn't mind applying a patch.

On the other hand: why should it be considered a problem if cruft reports
files as missing? And why should localepurge solve what cruft can't handle?
Disclaimer: i never ever used cruft.

Thanks, P. *8^)

Bug#289195: wmaker: moving mouse pointer breaks window switching/cycling

2005-01-12 Thread Paul Seelig
Hi Marcelo!

In the first place thanks for backporting the CVS code switching off this
dreadful icon panel. But:

--- begin quote changelog entry for wmaker (0.91.0-6)
  * debian/patches/60_optional_switch_panel.diff: stolen from CVS, make
switch panel optional. Closes the other half of 289509 (if you are
going to report multiple issues, submit multiple bugs, I don't mind
that)
--- end quote changelog entry for wmaker (0.91.0-6)

Actually the remark i made was not meant to be a request for change as part
of the actual bug report. I only wanted to express my hope for this switch
to appear sometime in the future and would have never expected this code
change to appear in Debian before a newer upstream wmaker release. Thanks
anyway! ;-)

In any case, here is the switch interested users need to add to their
~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker file to actually switch off the panel:

  SwitchPanelImages = None;

Maybe this should be added to the README.Debian file?

Alfredo's advice in his posting to the wm-devel list contained a small but
important typo: he omitted the 'e' as in 'SwitchPanelImags'...

   Thanks a lot, P. *8^)
