Bug#1035382: Bookworm amd64 live install ISO RC1 and RC2 install pointless raspi-firmware package
Package: debian-live Severity: normal Tags: d-i X-Debbugs-Cc: think...@rumbero.org Installation of Bookworm RC1+2 using amd64 live install ISO[1] includes package 'raspi-firmware', which in this context is a useless waste of space. It's presence results in the creation of a /boot/firmware/ directory of more than 100MB and which serves no purpose for a amd64 system. Manually purging the package leaves the pointless /boot/firmware/ directory in place. For debugging purposes, please refer to the installer logs available via [2]. Please ensure the 'raspi-firmware' package is only included with live ISO variants where it actually makes sense. Bug#1035360: bookworm RC2 installation leaves luks encrypted system in unbootable state
Package: debian-installer Severity: grave X-Debbugs-Cc: think...@rumbero.org Hi all, using the xfce4 based RC2 live ISO image[1], on a Thinkpad T480 (16GB RAM/256GB NVME/INTEL GRAPHICS ONLY) installation of Debian in an luks encrypted LVM was performed. Apparently, the required cryptsetup-initramfs packages were removed from the system during the last instalation stages, rendering the resulting system unbootable. Manual intervention was required to fix the issue from a live rescue system, something a novice user will never be able to accomplish. The same issue was already note with the prior RC1 variant of this bookworm live ISO. It can be reliably reproduced. Attached installation logs should be sufficiently verbose about what actually happened underneath. Bug#824835: tex-common: fmtutil fails
Hi, i was bitten by the same issue. Analyzing the various /tmp/fmtutil.* files created during installation trials, i stumbled over the line stating: ! I can't find file `syst-tex.mkii'. Checking with apt-file, syst-tex.mkii appeared to be contained in two packages, namely 'context' and 'texlive-latex-base'. Apparently there was a change, as this file is no longer part of texlive-latex-base, but only contained in context, which was not installed before on my systems. After adding the context package, all remaining packages configured just fine. Looks as if we now also require to have context installed. Bug#284274: Re: Bug#284274: Patch for the hardlink replacement bug request
Hi, for the time being, it would probably be much more reasonable to limit that function to the current local filesystem only, instead of trying to crack a nut with a sledgehammer. Finding duplicates over filesystems should be considered being a special use case which could/should be handled separately. In the meantime, lots of users (e.g. not only yours truly) would be very happy, if not even delighted, if they were able to deduplicate files via hardlinking within the boundaries of a single file system. Bug#610215: localepurge: Could remove Scribus translation files
Hello, as i found out, this localization file location is not limited to scribus in its both variations, but also holds true for various other qt based packages. Among these are for example the packages for hydrogen, virtualbox*, qt4, skype, pdfedit, qdacco, mscore, djvu, canorus, calibre, avidemux, googleearth, and maybe lots others i am not aware of myself. Instead of burdening localepurge with tracking such non-standard localization files, it would be advisable to have the affected packages fix the location of these translation files. In the long run this would be a cleaner solution. Other than that, dpkg already includes a feature to exclude specific files from any deb package from installation, rendering localepurge itself rather pointless these days. There is a nice article about this dpkg feature which is mentioned in wishlist bug #603587 and can be found at www.raphaelhertzog.com/2010/11/15/save-disk-space-by-excluding-useless-files-with-dpkg In fact, localepurge should be considered obsolete now, and it would be great if it could be replaced by some configuration frontend for the above mentioned dpkg exclude/include feature. Hello Jakub, i am unable to reproduce this behavior, and i think you should definitely abstain from manually editing this configuration file. You are not supposed to touch any configuration file which is handled via debconf. Please try to purge the package from your system, and then reinstall and reconfigure it via the standard debconf way. Does this solve the issue? Thanks a lot in advance! Bug#563757: mc: emacs key bindings silently removed from internal editor
Package: mc Version: 3:4.7.0-1 Severity: important After upgrading mc from version 4.7.0-pre1-3 to the currrent 4.7.0-1 there is no more the old mcedit which was able to handle emacs key bindings. This was an unexpected and completely undocumented change, which severely harms years of trained muscle memory for mc users. This is absolutely annoying! Comparing the ./edit sub directory of both versions source tree shows that all emacs was obviously completely removed. This crime has obviously been commited by the upstream authors. This is not the good old mcedit anymore! Please revert this in a future release! I have now put mc-4.7.0-pre1-3 on hold, and will stick to it until this issue has been dealt with. Well, if upgrading to 25-1 does not by itself result in a working boot configuration, it defintely shouldn't be the user who should be held responsible to make sure that it works. As an end user, i do expect that the upgrade does work without any further intervention. If 25-1 does not work although you think it should, then it is simply broken. For what it's worth, i didn't run any manual grub-install while before upgrading to 25-1. Luckily i still had 1.97+20091124-2 in the apt cache, and manually downgrading to it "solved" the issue for the time being. Bug#454658: localepurge: Remove dangling symlinks in /usr/share/man and /etc/alternatives
Hello Behan, sorry for answering so late, but better late than never... ;) Thanks a lot for your patch, although i have decided not to include it in localepurge. The reason to decide against is simply that i'd like localepurge to stay what it's name suggests. While i think that your idea is quite interesting i don't think it fits into the scope of localepurge. May i suggest something else? The mechanism is aleady there and there is no need to have to rely on localepurge to take advantage of it. So the following should perfectly integrate your idea with apt: create a file named like e.g. /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99-danglsyms containing following lines: -snip // Get rid of dangling symlinks after package installation DPkg { Post-Invoke {"if [ -x /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms ] && [ $(ps w -p "$PPID" | grep -c symlinks) != 1 ]; then /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms; else exit 0; fi";}; }; -snip And then put the code snippet you sent me into a separate executable shell script called /usr/local/sbin/danglsyms accordingly. I think this would be a more appropriate solution than bundling everything and the kitchen sink with localepurge. ;) Best regards P. *8^) Behan Webster wrote: Package: localepurge Version: 0.5.9 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch As I was using symlinks(1) to clean up /usr/share/man and /etc/alternatives this morning, I thought how convenient it would be to have this optionally performed by localepurge at the end. There are two options for me: a. Properly orphan the package in the hope that someone else takes over. b. Someone else simply officially takes over maintenance for this package without the need to bother about orphaning it before. I've CC'ed debian-devel in the hope that someone steps forward to take it over. Thanks.
Bug#387505: gworkspace.app: Debian package version is very outdated
Package: gworkspace.app Severity: normal Is this package still properly maintained? The current Debian package of gworkspace.app is at version 0.7.0 which originally dates from 18 Mar 2005, the good old times of the last Debian stable release. In the meantime, gworkspace.app has evolved considerably and is at stable upstream release version 0.8.3 since August 31 2006, but the the Debian package for unstable has only seen some recompilations of the outdated version from stable. It would be really nice if a current version could be shipped with the next stable Debian release. Actually it would be even nicer, if all of the GNUstep related environment would be completely up to date. Bug#385338: wish: dpkg-reconfigure localepurge to select when to run localepurge automatically
Hi João! Like Steve Greenland pointed out on the debian-devel list a few hours ago, the desired functionality could be easily achieved by simply removing the associated file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99-localepurge after installation of localepurge. This file triggers the execution of /usr/sbin/localepurge after each dpkg install action. Cheers, P. *8^) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? It surely sounds like a good idea and all, but all this user friendly configuration facilities are starting to become more than a nuisance for me. It has started to take more time and thought than the main functionality i was primarily interested in. My personal goal with this program has since long been reached and i really don't want to bother about extending it anymore. Actually i was already thinking about ripping out all the debconf facilities and going back to plain old fashioned manual configuration via plain text configuration file. But i can imagine the outcry of the user base, which seems to have grown pretty large by now. Maybe it's time to simply give up on it so that someone else with more time and ambition might want to maintain it for Debian. Bug#373186: localepurge: postinstall bailing out on missing /dev/tty in noninteractive installs
Hi Michael! I just tried reinstalling localepurge with # DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get --reinstall install localepurge which works flawlessly. Please be more verbose: - Which package is this cron file from? I can't find any reference to it even searching with apt-file. - What is the error messsage that makes you believe that localepurge's postinst is to be blamed? Could you please record such a failing installation using /usr/bin/script and send me the output? - And how come that your system has no /dev/tty at all? Isn't this the actual problem? And please be as detailed as possible so that i don't need to ask any further questions and to prevent any guessing on my part. Writing emails is very time consuming. Bug#289195: wmaker: moving mouse pointer breaks window switching/cycling
Hi Marcelo! In the first place thanks for backporting the CVS code switching off this dreadful icon panel. But: --- begin quote changelog entry for wmaker (0.91.0-6) * debian/patches/60_optional_switch_panel.diff: stolen from CVS, make switch panel optional. Closes the other half of 289509 (if you are going to report multiple issues, submit multiple bugs, I don't mind that) --- end quote changelog entry for wmaker (0.91.0-6) Actually the remark i made was not meant to be a request for change as part of the actual bug report. I only wanted to express my hope for this switch to appear sometime in the future and would have never expected this code change to appear in Debian before a newer upstream wmaker release. Thanks anyway! ;-) In any case, here is the switch interested users need to add to their ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker file to actually switch off the panel: SwitchPanelImages = None; Maybe this should be added to the README.Debian file? Alfredo's advice in his posting to the wm-devel list contained a small but important typo: he omitted the 'e' as in 'SwitchPanelImags'...
