Suggested packages:
  python3.10-venv python3.10-doc binfmt-support
The following NEW packages will be installed:

Need to get 5076 kB of archives.
After this operation, 20.4 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

If you hold it "apt-mark hold python3.10". The python3-minimal is installed as
usual.

The full python package is a recommended package, not a requirement for
python3-minimal.

Thanks,

Only to point that adduser is the recommended way to handle accounts in

packages and works with useradd under the hood too.

Bug#925373: libpam-modules: Executing script from pam_motd or pam_exec produce a huge memory consumption

2019-03-23 Thread Ricardo Fraile
Package: libpam-modules
Version: 1.1.8-3.6
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

In a Debian 9.8 installed only with ssh-server and standard system utilities
under VMware with 2 cpu and 1Gb of ram.

# ssh-keygen
# cd .ssh
# cat * >> authorized_keys
# vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
  #PermitRootLogin prohibit-password
  PermitRootLogin yes
# systemctl disable cron
# apt-get install smem
# reboot

I attach the reports from the free, slabinfo, meminfo and ps in each step in
the following file, the directory names are between brackets in each step.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rsp6x2zB34JyOaO7rYjCWzZwgtJfM9SP/view?usp=sharing

Starting the system and dropping caches, the free report is the following
(00-started_with_drop):

# sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 16:50:01 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977  81 861   4  33 806
Swap:  1021   01021

Doing the ssh loop from other terminal:
# while :; do ssh root@localhost "exit"; done

One minute later, the memory reach and mantain the following level
(01-with_loop_normal):

# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 16:51:12 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977 287 643   9  46 592
Swap:  1021   01021

But if I set "/etc/update-motd.d/10-uname" with the following content:

#!/bin/sh
uname -snrvm

A=`mktemp`
B=`mktemp`
C=`mktemp`
rm -f $A
rm -f $B
rm -f $C

The memory grows largely and starts swapping (02-with_loop_modified):
# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 16:52:00 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977 344 582  10  50 533
Swap:  1021   01021

(03-with_loop_modified_last)
# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 16:52:34 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977 878  63   7  35   7
Swap:  1021  141007

Stopping the loop and cleanning caches produce the following (04-finished_loop):

# sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 16:53:34 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977 610 340   6  26 280
Swap:  1021  141007

There are around 300Mb of difference on the memory available.

Doing the same task that pam_motd execute, don't produce that large increment
(05-with_runparts_loop):

# reboot
# sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 17:05:55 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977  82 864   5  30 807
Swap:  1021   01021

Start the loop on other terminal:

# while :; do run-parts --lsbsysinit /etc/update-motd.d ; done

After a few time, stopping the loop and check (06-with_runpart_loop_last):

# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 17:08:15 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977  83 852   5  41 800
Swap:  1021   01021

And finally cleaning caches (07-finished_runpart_loop):
# sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
# date && free -m
Sat Mar 23 17:08:33 EDT 2019
  totalusedfree  shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:977  82 863   5  31 806
Swap:  1021   01021

If I comment the pam_motd lines on "/etc/pam.d/ssh" and I add a pam_exec
directly, I get the same bad memory consumtion result:

#sessionoptional pam_motd.so  motd=/run/motd.dynamic
#sessionoptional pam_motd.so noupdate
session optional pam_exec.so stdout /bin/sh /etc/update-motd.d/10-uname

Why the memory consumption is large is the tempfiles are created inside pam and
executing the same from the login user doesn't produce the same result?

2019-01-10 Thread Ricardo Fraile

It would be nice to have the solution proposed by Javier

If the cron is running frequently, it can generate a lot of messages. As
example, on systems with limited resources, those messages can be can be
worthless.

In the case that the current behaviour is needed, that line can be
easily commented.

I have the fix committed on the repo but before update it to Debian, if
possible, I would like that you test it before.

I attached the .deb file to this mail. If you want to build it, these
are the steps that you need to do:

git clone -b dev https://github.com/rfrail3/tuptime.git

cd tuptime && dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

dpkg -i ../tuptime_3.4.1_*.deb

Please, let me know if you have any problem.

Bug#912996: tuptime: Add support for suspend and hivernate

2018-11-16 Thread Ricardo Fraile
Hello Xiscu,

The only reference nowadays inside the kernel for the uptime is the
efective "uptime" variable accesible through /proc/uptime, it have the
following definition:

uptime Wall clock since boot, combined idle time of all cpus

To cover your use case, at least, is needed an other variable with the
proper counter. As example, the simple solution can be something like
this:

rtime Efective running time.

But I doubt that this will be implemented inside ther kernel. Apart,
Tuptime would need a large refactoring.

Hi Xiscu,

Tuptime can't achieve that behaviour, is not possible.

Thanks,

Bug#912996: tuptime: Add support for suspend and hivernate

2018-11-08 Thread Ricardo Fraile

Hello Xiscu,

The design of Tuptime is dependent of the information that the kernel
report in the uptime and btime counters from /proc/uptime and /proc/stat
respectively.

Both (documented under Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt) are related
with the boot time date and none of them are reset when the system pass
over suspend or resume. Therefore the startup information is the same
and the uptime is calculated from there.

As reference and example, the man page of the 'uptime' said 'Tell how
long the system has been running'. Testing it between suspend and resume
states report the following behaviour:

# uptime
 09:50:33 up  8 min, 2 users,  load average: 0,24, 0,33, 0,15
# pm-suspend
(5 minutes later, turning on again)
# uptime
 09:55:15 up  13 min, 2 users,  load average: 0,33, 0,33, 0,16
(5 minutes later, turning on again)
# pm-hibernate
 10:01:16 up  19 min, 2 users,  load average: 3,77, 1,14, 0,43

...which is the same, the uptime started when the system was booted up
and counted from there.

But in any case, the time counted is not the "running time", the term
"wall clock" or "elapsed real time" is more correct instead of the
actual definition, I will fix it.

Thanks,

Bug#884955: tuptime: Files to install

2017-12-24 Thread Ricardo Fraile
Hi Terry,

Thank you for the detailed report, it helps me to figure it out where
was the issue plus the help of the service
"https://codesearch.debian.net;.

As you correctly said, when the "su -" is executed, the scripts located
in the directory /etc/profile.d/ are executed too because it creates a
login shell.

The process is detailed at the end of the file "/etc/profile" and is the
same for all Bourne-compatible shells, but some of them have a slighly
different behaviour:

if [ -d /etc/profile.d ]; then
for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh; do
if [ -r $i ]; then
. $i
fi
done
unset i
fi

A lot of packages use the form "su -s /bin/bash" instead of "su -". I
think too that this is a better approach, the loging shell is not
needed, I was wrong.

The issue also affects to the init.d script, which was with the same "su
-" format.

I just update the repo, in dev branch, it will be available in Debian in
a few weeks.

Thanks,

Bug#884955: tuptime: Files to install

2017-12-23 Thread Ricardo Fraile

Hi Terry,

I think that the problem is because the user tuptime have the shell
"/bin/sh" and the script spect an execution from "/bin/bash". Using "su
-" prevent any herietage from the execution user, in this case "root",
and normally, this user have the bash shell assigned.

I tried to find the "lcx_all_users_aliases.sh" script but I didn't found
anything from the offical repos. Please, can you pass me the content of
if? (maybe directly to my address if you have sensitive information).

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where
appropriate ***

* What led up to the situation?

The install fails due to the inclusion of '-' in the postinst file.
Specifically, line 30 reads "su - tuptime -c "tuptime -x". The use of
the '-' causes full login shell exec to /bin/sh which was incompatible
with our /etc/profile.d files.

Removal of the '-' in postinst should fix the situation.

See https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=875958 for
another

example of 'su -' causing a conflict with files in /etc/profile.d.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
I uninstalled tuptime, removed the files in /etc/profile.d, and
reinstalled successfully.

* What was the outcome of this action?
This fixed the problem.

Bug#848240: missing documentation: password? shell?

Bug#865301: linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64: /vmlinuz and /initrd.img not updated after custom kernel build and install

2017-06-21 Thread Ricardo Fraile
Hi,

The files under "linux-source-4.9/debian/tmp/DEBIAN/" are created by the
content of the file "linux-source-4.9/scripts/package/builddeb"

Particulary, starting from the line 193:

# Install the maintainer scripts
# Note: hook scripts under /etc/kernel are also executed by official
Debian
# kernel packages, as well as kernel packages built using make-kpkg.
# make-kpkg sets $INITRD to indicate whether an initramfs is wanted, and
# so do we; recent versions of dracut and initramfs-tools will obey
this.
debhookdir=${KDEB_HOOKDIR:-/etc/kernel}
if grep -q '^CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD=y' $KCONFIG_CONFIG; then
want_initrd=Yes
else
want_initrd=No
fi
for script in postinst postrm preinst prerm ; do
mkdir -p "$tmpdir$debhookdir/$script.d"
cat < "$tmpdir/DEBIAN/$script"
#!/bin/sh

set -e

# Pass maintainer script parameters to hook scripts
export DEB_MAINT_PARAMS="\$*"

# Tell initramfs builder whether it's wanted
export INITRD=$want_initrd

test -d $debhookdir/$script.d && run-parts --arg="$version"
--arg="/$installed_image_path" $debhookdir/$script.d
exit 0
EOF
chmod 755 "$tmpdir/DEBIAN/$script"
done

Maybe the reference to "linux-update-symlinks" must be in a file under
"/etc/kernel/postinst.d/", but for that, the official package scripts
files needs to do the same.

Thanks,

Bug#865301: linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64: /vmlinuz and /initrd.img not updated after custom kernel build and install

2017-06-20 Thread Ricardo Fraile
I'm checking that the last kernel from the repo [1] have the postinst
different than the package done by the "make deb-pkg". I attached both.

I think that the file located under
"linux-source-4.9/debian/tmp/DEBIAN/postinst" must have the logic for
manage linux-update-symlinks like the original package from the repo do.

In this particular case, the symlinks are update using:

# linux-update-symlinks install 4.9.30id /boot/vmlinuz-4.9.30id
I: /vmlinuz.old is now a symlink to boot/vmlinuz-4.9.0-3-amd64
I: /initrd.img.old is now a symlink to boot/initrd.img-4.9.0-3-amd64
I: /vmlinuz is now a symlink to boot/vmlinuz-4.9.30id
