Bug#1061743: Gramps in Debian

2024-04-28 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer

Hi Ross,

I'd like to get gramps back into Debian, and from my (very limited)
research it seems that gramps v5.2.1 fixed the build failure on Debian.

Are you planning to update the package? Or is there another blocker
which I didn't spot?

Thanks for taking care of gramps in Debian!

Tobias

Dear maintainer,

I've prepared an NMU for isoquery (versioned as 3.3.3-1.1). The diff
is attached to this message.

Hi Sebastian,

thanks a lot for your NMU. Unfortunately, the fix from Steve is not
correct, because the expected output of the test actually *is* French,
so the failing test was indeed right.

The test did work previously, so something in the locale handling must
have changed. I've now fixed this upstream and will prepare a new upload
with the expected test output changed back to French. The package build
now succeeds again with all tests passing.

2024-04-24 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer

Am 23.04.24 um 21:42 schrieb Kacper Gutowski:

Dear Maintainer,

Recently quiz(6) was removed from the package.
I understand that the plan is to switch to a different fork linked in
changelog whose developers consider quiz(6) to be "just plain junk."
I can't say I understand that rationale, or why does it apply to quiz(6)
but not to arithmetic(6), for example. But seeing that pom(6) was
retained despite that fork disliking it, I would like to request
that quiz(6) is kept packaged as well. I find it useful.

Hi Kacper,

thanks for your bug report. I'll admit that the removal of all those
programs has been a test to see if those programs are still in use. As
long as I don't actually switch "upstream", I can revert all those
removals quite easily.

So apparently, at least two programs are missed if I remove them. I've
re-added quiz now as well, it'll get uploaded shortly.

Bug#1051717: split wtf(6) in a separate package?

2024-04-03 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer

Am 11.09.23 um 19:11 schrieb Antoine Beaupre:

Package: bsdgames
Version: 2.17-29+b1
Severity: critical

I wonder if wtf(6) should be split in a separate package. It's a
genuinely useful package (as opposed to a "game") that I have only
discovered recently, even though I have been familiar with BSD games
for more than a few decades at this point (!).

It seems to be effectively maintained in its own fork right now, with
updates on the acronyms files maintained in debian/patches, which
... doesn't seem ideal.

Hi Antoine,

I agree, the state of bsdgames and wtf is not ideal. I'm in favor of
splitting wtf into a separate package.

void-linux seem to have their own git repo for this now:

https://github.com/void-linux/netbsd-wtf

... and it seems relatively up to date. It *looks* like the upstream
source is split between:

http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/src/share/misc/?only_with_tag=MAIN

and:

http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/src/games/wtf/?only_with_tag=MAIN

... so I'm not sure how we should handle that, but maybe converging
over the above git repo would be best?

Yeah, might be an option. However, there would still be patches needed,
because upstream is missing the latest changes from NetBSD and also the
Debian specific acronyms. So I'm pondering whether it makes more sense
to create a new "upstream" git repo for wtf in Debian. Anyway, I've
created a PR to include the latest changes from NetBSD. I'll see how
responsive they are. :-)

https://github.com/void-linux/netbsd-wtf/pull/3

Another upstream I found is:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bsd-games/

... but i'm not sure how valid that actually is either.

I think this looks promising, but as you mentioned, it lacks wtf. So if
wtf gets into its own package, the sourceforge codebase could be used
for a new upload of bsdgames.

Arch seems to be using this as an upstream now:

https://github.com/vattam/BSDGames

See:

https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/bsd-games/

... hm, they actually use the sourceforge codebase now. Maybe that has
been changed since your bug report.

Tobias

Thanks for the update.

Based on what is in git now (I just updated the German translation)
this is now described quite well for the standard package. And yes, so
this bug can be closed when 0.70 (?) hits unstable.

Hi Martin and Helge,

thanks for your work and the updated documentation. I'm the one who
wrote most of the scripts for the manpages-l10n package -- back then,
mostly for the Linux kernel manpages and one (German) translation.

Today, the project manpages-l10n has grown considerably, and IMHO, those
scripts are no longer a good fit for the massive amount of source files
and translations.

I've thought a long time already about rewriting those scripts to be far
more efficient than they are right now, but this is a huge task, so I
postponed it several times.

Maybe your deprecation date of 2030 is a good motivation now to finally
start this task. :-)

However, this needs to be done in an coordinated effort which I would
need to discuss with Helge and Mario (maintainers of manpages-l10n).

This is a discussion we need to take elsewhere, this is clearly not the
scope of this bug report. Just wanted to give a quick heads-up.

Bug#1053634: Fix for failing autopkgtest

2023-10-07 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer

Source: ocaml-odoc
Version: 2.2.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
Affects: quilt

Dear Ocaml-Team,

I've uploaded the latest release of quilt, v0.67. In that version, quilt
has changed the returned error code of the push and pop commands. If the
series file is missing or empty, both commands previously returned the
error code 2. Now, the error code in this situation is 1.

In your autopkgtest, you call quilt push and check for the error code 2.
However, there is no debian/patches/series in ocaml-odoc, so quilt now
returns error code 1 which results in a failing autopkgtest of ocaml-odoc.

This, in turn, results in blocking the testing migration of quilt.

I think it would help to check for the existence of the series file
before calling quilt, like in the attached patch.

Please consider applying that patch (or similar code).

Tobias

Hi Julien,

right, thanks for pointing this out. I have to admit that I'm a bit confused

Hi Helmut,

thanks for filing this bug. I didn't discover this side effect during my

The cause of this FTBFS seems to be a changed error return code from
quilt. If there are no patches in the series file, it now returns 1
instead of 2. The program dh_quilt_unpatch relies on the previous error
code, though, and fails.

Although it's probably a rather trivial code change in dh_quilt_unpatch,
I agree with you that the timing is too close to the freeze.

I'll upload a new version of quilt which reverts upstream back to 0.66.

I suspect that the error you're experiencing comes from another package,

so the severity should be downgraded to e. g. important. What do you think?

Bug#1004634: A way to include openscenegraph in bookworm?

2022-10-22 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer

Hi,

I think it would be a pity to release bookworm without openscenegraph,
also because there a quite a lot of reverse dependencies.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been much progress yet, and the freeze is
coming nearer.

I've just spotted how Ubuntu solved this:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openscenegraph/3.6.5+dfsg1-7ubuntu1

They disabled ffmpeg support, so that the package can be included in
their release, albeit with fewer features.

Would that be a solution for Debian as well?

IMHO, we could drop the support for ffmpeg now, upload the reduced
version and allow all dependencies to migrate to testing again. *If*
there is a patch available in time for ffmpeg support, we can still
upload that version for bookworm.

What do you think?

Tobias

Bug#1013946: lintian: wrongly report unknown-locale-code ber

2022-06-29 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer

Am 28.06.22 um 02:31 schrieb Axel Beckert:

Still would be happy about input from Toddy on this. :-)

Hi all,

thanks a lot for your research and insights ...

I'm not an ISO expert, either, but from my reading and understanding the
relationship between the standards (and the intended use) is as follows:

First, ISO 639 (without the suffix -1) was created, and it included most
of the major (spoken and written) languages of the world. All included
languages had a two letter code (like "en" for English).

As it quickly turned out, the two letter code was not enough to
categorize all written and spoken languages. :-)

Therefore, ISO 639 became ISO 639-1 and the development of ISO 639-2
started. As far as I know, ISO 639-1 is a strict subset of ISO 639-2.

The standard ISO 639-2 introduced a three letter code, so they could
include many more languages. As the standard was intended to be used in
bibliographic contexts, they created a code for every individual
language which has at least a "modest body of literature" (whatever
"modest" means here.)

In order to accommodate languages with an even smaller proportion of
literature, they created collections of languages, called "language
groups" or "families". One such example are the Berber languages which
you've discovered.

Lastly, ISO 639-3 and 639-5 have been created. Those standards aim to
make a clear distinction between individual languages (in ISO 639-3) and
language groups or families (ISO 639-5).

Apart from the language families (like Berber), every element that
represents an individual language in ISO 639-2 is included in ISO 639-3.
So for individual languages, ISO 639-2 is a strict subset of ISO 639-3.

I'm not entirely sure if it's a good idea to use a language family as a
locale (or in this context, program translation). It might work for the
Berber example, if the Berber languages are really so similar that it
doesn't matter which language it is exactly. However, I don't know
anything about Berber languages, so I cannot tell if this approach makes
sense.

From a quick search, there are at least Kabyle language, Shilha
language, the Tuareg languages, Tarifit, and Central Atlas Tamazight
which are summed up as Berber languages.

The safest way for lintian would probably be to use ISO 639-3 as a
source for locale checking, because those codes represent an individual
language. The vast majority of program translations are into an
individual language, so the check seems plausible.

For bonus points, you could also check ISO 639-5 and print a warning (or
info) that this locale code represents a language group rather than an
individual language. :-)

This is essentially Axel's latest suggestion -- except that I'd suggest
to use ISO 639-3 instead of ISO 639-2 as authoritative source.

Sorry for this long e-mail, but languages and their codes are pretty
hard ...

Tobias

Hi,

I'm downgrading this bug to allow the NMU of manpages-fr-extra to
migrate to testing. The latest upload replaces the previous package with
a transitional dummy package which depends on manpages-fr and

Hi David,

I'm not sure if I understand correctly what you want to say.

Do you mean that the separate package manpages-fr-extra should stay as a
separate package? If so, please note that all existing translations from
manpages-fr-extra have been imported into manpages-l10n, so I thought that we
could supersede and remove manpages-fr-extra.

If this is not wanted, I can of course remove those translations, so that
manpages-fr-extra can still exist as an own project.

Regarding the version number: I've added a special case for manpages-fr-extra
in d/rules, so that the new version number of that package is greater than the
current version in unstable (20200406 vs. 20151231).

Please tell me if the French translation team would like to keep
manpages-fr-extra, I certainly don't want to step on anyone's toes.

Tobias

Hi Marco,

thanks for your bug report. The manpage with the typo is in the package "apt",
so I'm reassigning the bug.

Hi Damon,

thanks for the hint, this brought me onto the right track. However, your
suggested fix did not solve the problem for me. I've had to apply this
code to make it work:

class raphodo_build(build):
sub_commands = build.sub_commands + [
('build_man_page', None), ('build_icons', None),
('build_translations', None),
]

def run(self):
if not os.path.isdir('build'):
os.mkdir('build')
build.run(self)

Please note the new method "run".

Tobias

Hi Guillem,

thanks for reporting the bug. Indeed, you've guessed the reason. This
should now be fixed in the git repository.

As golang-1.13 is about to be removed from unstable, I've reassigned
this bug to golang-1.14.

thanks for the reminder -- the new version is on its way into Debian.

You're right, of course. I jumped to that conclusion due to the error
message "failed to initialize build cache".

I don't know why my first build succeeded -- now I can reproduce the
FTBFS :-(

However, I think I have found the solution for golang-1.12 (very similar
to dh-golang). I'm currently building the package and will upload the
fix soon.

Hi,

the FTBFS of golang should be fixed. It was due to the GOCACHE changes
from Go 1.11 to Go 1.12. Anthony Fok has just fixed this in dh-golang.

I can confirm that golang-1.12 builds fine in an updated sid chroot on
amd64 for me.

Hi,

you're right, I've re-added those BYHAND rules and the converted package
builds fine for me. I think we should create a release soon, so that we
can see if everything still works as expected. More testers are welcome!

Your suggestion with an alternative mechanism for ftp-master to update
those files on the archive mirrors (instead of BYHAND) is great. We
should ask them about ideas how this could work. However, I think they
may need some time off so shortly after the release ... :-)

Hi Joost,

that sounds sensible. Could you start this discussion, please? You seem
to have done quite a bit of research for other projects.

Apart from that, I thought that maybe the first upload should go to
experimental. The addition of Japanese requires the package to go
through NEW anyway, and if we decide to have the files on the mirrors,
re-adding the BYHAND rules seems to be rather easy.

Hi Javier,

I did some more work on the Makefile and d/rules, now the package builds
fine for me.

I'd like to upload in the next days, so we have plenty of time during
this release cycle to identify and fix problems with the new infrastructure.

I've removed the BYHAND rules, because those rules are a burden for
FTPMasters and I think that the website
(https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/) does no longer need
them. I've found a commit from eight years ago which suggests this:

https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/cron/commit/6f39ebcbeadac23d1c1e0d70af8faeecfd6f6d25

The only place where the BYHAND rules might still be needed is from the
fileservers (https://deb.debian.org/debian/doc/FAQ), and I think that
nowadays the availability on the main website should suffice.

What do you think?

Tobias

Bug#612993: Converted debian-faq to DocBook

2019-07-06 Thread Dr. Tobias Quathamer
control: tag -1 pending

Hi Joost,

I've worked during the last week on the conversion of debian-faq to
DocBook. Now it's going rather smoothly, so I've pushed my commits to
the git repository.

I've taken great care to convert most of the translated strings
automatically to the new DocBook markup syntax, so that e.g. the French
translation with ~960 strings has only about 25 untranslated or fuzzy
strings. So it should be a rather small amount of work for the translators.

So far, the generation of .txt, .html, and .pdf works quite well. The
next steps would be to convert debian/rules, so that the package
building works again.

Tobias

Hi Paul,

thanks for the update. I suspect that the FTBFS is due to the (probably
accidental) upload of a new version of
golang-github-mendersoftware-mender-artifact to unstable instead of
experimental.

I've just reverted that package with a +really version. Could you
reschedule the binNMU in a couple of hours, after the updated package
has been ACCEPTED in unstable?

Should I file a separate bug report for the unblock of
golang-github-mendersoftware-mender-artifact?

Hi Paul,

I think you could start with the binNMUs for the reverse dependencies of
golang-golang-x-net-dev now, using unstable this time instead of testing.

All golang-*-dev packages have been reverted to their corresponding
version in testing.

Some packages have already migrated to testing, most of the other
packages are unblocked (thank you!), and only two packages still need to
be unblocked (hugo and gokey).

Please tell me if there are still things to do for the golang team in
order to enable the binNMUs.

Tobias

Hi,

in order to re-sync the golang package versions in unstable and testing
(see [1] and [2] for more details), gokey has been uploaded with the
previous version, which does not FTBFS.

I'm therefore downgrading this bug to enable the migration of gokey to
testing. In a couple of days, after the testing migration, I'll adjust
the package version of gokey in this bug report, upgrade the severity
again to serious and tag the bug with "sid".

Hi Balint,

you're right, four days is really not a long time. I took this bug from
the RC bug list on udd.d.o and somehow saw a date from beginning of
April, so I assumed wrongly that this bug is nearly two months old
without any reaction from you. Probably I've mixed up a line on the UDD
page, I don't know where I got the wrong bug report date.

Shortly after I did the upload, I noticed that the bug is in fact only
four days old -- so I'm sorry about the upload, but I hope that it won't
interfere too much with your work.

Regards,
Tobias

Hi Paul,

thanks a lot for your quick answer. Upon further investigation, I
noticed that the package keyutils also removed some manpages which have
been shifted into the kernel man-pages project. I've included those
manpages as well, but because this is a bigger change than previously
discussed with you, I did not upload yet.

I've attached the .dsc debdiff. I can confirm that the debdiff of the
binary packages shows the newly included manpages.

Regards,
Tobias
