Bug#673582: x11-xserver-utils: xsetroot -def doesn't
Package: x11-xserver-utils Version: 7.7~2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I've just upgraded my box from Squeeze to Testing, and find that the screen background is black instead of plaid. According to the man page, 'xsetroot -def' (formerly: 'xsetroot -default') should restore the plaid background. This does not work for me on two machines, one i386 and one amd64, both with testing as of these days, and I've not found any other option to restore the plaid layout. Can you please repair this? Bug#673240: qemu-kvm: active wait on CD image boot
Package: qemu-kvm Version: 0.12.5+dfsg-5+squeeze8 Severity: normal Hi, I'm not sure that I'm filing the bug against the correct package - if not, please say so, and feel free to re-assign. I recently installed a KVM machine using virt-manager, which had a DVD iso image with Debian configured as a CDROM drive to boot from, to install the machine. Firing up the machine I see that it boots into the menu where you choose the installation method. At that point, it sits and waits for user input - afair, indefinitely. But while doing nothing, the VM is pegged at 100% CPU, when it should be idling at ~1-5% CPU. Disconnecting the CD drive from the VM and then rebooting the machine makes it boot to the login prompt, then sit idling at said 1-5% CPU. Mounting the image as a CDROM after booting does not seem to have adverse performance aspects. Bug#671801: please backport the 3.3 wacom driver to 3.2 [afterthought]

Excellent. Thanks for the update. Kernel maintainers: please consider the 25-patch series from [1] for sid. It adds support for various new wacom tablets to the input subsystem, most notably the Bamboo PenTouch gen3. it occurred to me that I saw no obvious way to configure the tablet, so the only operating mode is to have the small, approximately A5-sized sensitive area represent the whole screen. Which makes using the tablet sort of difficult if you have a large screen resolution because the cursor jumps at every small move. It's sort of like a mouse with high accelleration. So while it technically works, I'm a bit doubtful about the usefulness of it - but then, I have no expectations. No, I am quite sure that it is the above 10texlive-lang-arab.cfg which is a left over from pre-history. ;} APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Did you have a mixture of 2007 - 2009 - 2011 at soem point? Mixing testing and experimental and having *oldstable* files looks like a huge mess. The experimental is only in there because I wanted to have the 3.3 kernel. I added it only very recently. If you get a chance to try the driver from wheezy then: - if it isn't fixed, we can pursue this upstream. - if it is fixed, we can think about how to support these tablets well in squeeze, either by preparing a stable update or updating the package at backports.debian.org. It's a 3.2.16 plus your patches: ii linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64 3.2.16-1a~test plus its prerequisites. A little too much for the upstream -stable trees, but these look like good changes for wheezy. The results are, as with the 3.3 kernel: * Using the tablet with one finger works, although very clumsily. It's more like trial-and-error to put the pointer somewhere, and tapping the tablet does not work at all - one has to press the appropriate button. * When I put the stylus close to the tablet, the blue LED changes its colour to white. But otherwise, the stylus has no effect whatsoever - can't use the mouse, nor press a button. * None of the more advanced functions of the tablet (pressure sensitivity, 3D, or multi-touch) work. I didn't made any effort to specifically configure the X server to work with this tablet, so those results only reflect what I got out of auto-detecting the device (ie, plugging it in and see what I get). Hi, I just stumbled over this old bug report of mine since gkrellm now does not only seem to lose some (most) fans every other day, but disks, too. Bug#668341: scim: program is unreliable
Package: scim Version: 1.4.9-6 Severity: normal Hi, lately, scim has become quite unreliable in the sense that whether it's working or not, has become a hit-and-miss experience. I start scim out of my .xsession file like this: scim -c simple -e pinyin,chewing,libprime,libprime-imengine-setup,m17n,pinyin,prime,rawcode,socket,table,uim -f x11 -d But every other run yields only garbled characters instead of the Chinese I attempted to write. In such a case, closing the session and re-entering it frequently fixes the situation, and scim operation returns back to normal. The problem seems to be related to disk activity, so when I'm logging in after booting the machine up, anacron and whatnot provide plenty of that, followed by a non-functional scim experience. Sometimes, scim also silently crashes (didn't find any logs - they should have been in .xsession-errors, right?). May be related to #620391? Bug#660639: debian-installer: too few inodes on /var
Package: debian-installer Version: 20110106+squeeze4 Severity: wishlist Hi, when installing a Debian Squeeze machine, while partitioning the disk, the associated help texts suggest that the option for more inodes is only required for a news server. But in my practical experience, almost all systems sooner or later seem to hit the inodes limit on /var. It is generally a very bad idea to run out of inodes, and, much worse, they even can't be retrofitted to an existing file system, it should be worth the effort to allocate more of them right from the start (re-formatting /var in an otherwise running system also has the potential for great havoc). I therefore suggest that the d-i allocates much more inodes for /var in any case, as just far too many files go in there during regular operations. If my icinga reports are correct, eight times as many inodes should be a good ballpark figure. Bug#646155: scim: arrows should appear on the left side
Package: scim Version: 1.4.9-6 Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream Hi, when using Chinese, I often see a small window that shows a number of characters that might be of interest to me, with two arrows to scroll through a list, which appear on the right side. Unfortunately, the list, as well as the screen real estate the characters need, changes all the time, so there is no sure-fire way to repeatedly press one of the two arrows while not moving the mouse. It would be great if the program could offer the option to place the arrows on the left side instead of the right, so they have a fixed place on the screen, and can thus more reliably be clicked. Don't know offhand where to easily find it: Upstream's changelog isn't included in the package, so... I'd be fine either way, but think that the feature deserves more advertising, or, alternatively (?), being disabled by default, to prevent bogus bug reports like mine. What do you recommend, short of simply deleting the references to deluser? /var/lib/dpkg/info/roundup.postrm: 50: deluser: not found The adduser package has only priority important, not essential. Only required if localhost is not sufficient.??? Hence, presumably, this setting should be commented out by default. (This is the normal thanks for pointing out the discrepancy. Unfortunately, the docs are wrong on both accounts, as you can easily verify: 1. Omitting the host statement makes roundup listen on all addresses, and 2. writing hostname instead of host also makes it listen on all addresses. Package: postgresql-common Version: 113 Severity: normal Hi, after running pg_upgradecluster to upgrade from 8.3 (Lenny) to 8.4 (Squeeze), my pg_hba.conf in the 8.3 release was nuked, and the pg_hba.conf in 8.4 is also broken. Bug#539919: using .Xresources does not work
Hi, I still get *awful* fonts on a newly upgraded system. Comparing with another system that I smoothly upgraded from Testing to Squeeze, and where fonts appear to work, I didn't yet find the difference. Currently, on my new Squeeze box, -fn does not work in whatever way I want. If I leave it off, the font is very small and hard to read, and if I specify my desired font, either as 10x20 or as -misc-..., I get also awful results. If I use Set Default Font from the menu, I get a font picker with only typographic fonts that I usually do not want to use, and I have not yet found a way to specify the desired font picked there, eg. in my .emacs file. Also, Save Options did re-write my .emacs file, but no font statements could be found there. Bug#606136: etckeeper: alert the user of required manual intervention
Package: etckeeper Version: 0.43~bpo50+1 Severity: wishlist Hi, it would be great if etckeeper could alert the user of required manual intervention. The package comes configured for git, but if git isn't installed, the initialization step will simply be skipped, silently. Either asking the user about which VCS he wants to use, and/or emitting a message that the user needs to do something to get a functional package (eg. as an else clause to the init step in postinst), would be nice. This would spare me the tedious process of attaching one file after the other while navigating the tree, and also spare the problem of possible name collision. I know I could create an archive, eg. using tar or zip, but would prefer to not do this, since the other side then complains about the work to unpack those. Bug#601856: gkrellm: fans are not always detected on startup
Hi, On Wed, 03.11.2010 at 07:12:38 +0100, Sandro Tosi mo...@debian.org wrote: Can you please try version 2.3.5, uploaded to experimental? From that version, gkrellm uses libsensors to gather system info. a few days ago I installed that version. So far, although I haven't given it extensive testing yet (ie, logged in only a few times), it has not failed me. It is also hard to compare the two versions, as the new version provides me with many more sensors as before, which led me to activate five temperature and six fan sensors (all giving different readings). So far, it has just been working fine. :) -- Kind regards, --Toni++ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#603207: emacs23: opening a file requires two attempts
Package: emacs23 Version: 23.2+1-4 Severity: normal Hi, when I see a directory listing in emacs and want to edit a certain file, I position the cursor in that row and hit enter. For about any file I've tried so far, emacs has started to require two attempts to load the file. I don't know when this started, but it wasn't this way in earlier days. Anyway, here is what I get when I want to load a file: Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-number-of-arguments set-buffer-multibyte 0) (set-buffer-multibyte) (lambda nil (setq case-fold-search t) (setq x-symbol-8bits t) (set-background-color beige) (set-cursor-color Red) (set-mouse-color Navy) (set-buffer-multibyte) (set-fill-column 70) (auto-fill-mode 1) (auto-fill-mode 1) (outline-minor-mode 1))() run-hooks(text-mode-hook sgml-mode-hook) sgml-mode() html-mode() set-auto-mode-0(html-mode nil) set-auto-mode() normal-mode(t) after-find-file(nil t) find-file-noselect-1(#buffer base.html ~/django/ftpadmin/templates/base.html nil nil /home/django/ftpadmin/templates/base.html (32188423 64777)) find-file-noselect(/home/toni/django/ftpadmin/templates/base.html nil nil nil) find-file(/home/toni/django/ftpadmin/templates/base.html) dired-find-file() call-interactively(dired-find-file nil nil) In that case, I Ctrl-] to leave the debugger, which positions my cursor on said file again. Bug#333953: bash: LC_COLLATE ignores nocaseglob in some locales
Hi, On Tue, 02.11.2010 at 19:54:40 -0500, Jonathan Nieder jrnie...@gmail.com wrote: # this is how fnmatch() is documented to work you can document all you want, including that 'ls' is suddenly meant to behave like 'rm -f', but that doesn't make it any better. The relevant detail is that what [a-z] matches depends on the collation order. This gives globs like [??-??] a more useful (locale-specific) meaning than the C.UTF-8 collation order would dictate, with the unfortunate side-effect of giving [a-z] counterintuitive behavior with respect to case folding[1]. I must admit that I am not sure that I completely understood your opengroup references, but would like to point out that programmers and systems administrators may have quite different requirements than end users, which these Posix documents are clearly aimed at, and that these people are also most likely constitute the majority of bash users. End users are expected to use a GUI these days, where their nautilus, konqueror and what-have-you can sort files all the way *they* want. I just verified that dash does *NOT* ignore case like bash does. IOW, scripts intended to run on both bash and dash may behave differently, depending on which shell they are actually run by. This should hold for a large part of system scripts in Debian. I therefore request that the options nocaseglob and nocasematch are made to work as primarily documented, ie, without any hidden gotchas. Ie, these options should override, not be overridden by, the effects of LC_*. Toni Mueller wrote: Upping the severity due to possible negative impact (I've been bitten several times, too), semi-hidden documentation, A separate bug report suggesting how to improve the documentation would be welcome. I'd rather have the behaviour return to a sane state, than having this idiocy documented any better, although attaching big flashing warning signs to these options and stating any workaround might be a first step to prevent people from getting snared. Hope that helps, Not really.
