Bug#1054200: libkf5sysguard-bin is not a part of the default KDE installation
Package: libkf5sysguard-bin Version: 4:5.27.8-1 Severity: normal X-Debbugs-Cc: antkaid+deb...@gmail.com Dear Maintainer, In KDE System Monitor, there's a very nice feature of displaying the per-app network stats, e.g. Firefox consuming 1 MB/s out of the overall network bandwidth. This feature requires an extra executable to work, ksgrd_network_helper, which is provided by the package libkf5sysguard-bin. libkf5sysguard-bin is not a part of the default KDE installation in Debian. I didn't get it after installing KDE. Thus, installing a default Debian KDE suite gets you the System Monitor with this feature broken: the app-specific Network chart on the "Applications" tab stays silent without any explanations. It can be fixed by simply installing libkf5sysguard-bin, but for the regular user: 1) it's hard to figure this out; 2) it's not friendly, as the user just wants the System Monitor to fully work, not a manual installation (and selection in apt) of the specific package libkf5sysguard-bin. I'm not sure where exactly this package should be wired into the KDE packages tree. But I believe the per-app stats are really an important part of the current KDE experience. -- System Information: Debian Release: trixie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.5.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_IE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_IE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_IE:en Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages libkf5sysguard-bin depends on: ii libc62.37-12 ii libgcc-s113.2.0-4 ii libkf5authcore5 5.107.0-1 ii libkf5coreaddons55.107.0-1 ii libkf5i18n5 5.107.0-1+b1 ii libkf5sysguard-data 4:5.27.8-1 ii libnl-3-200 3.7.0-0.2+b1 ii libpcap0.8 1.10.4-4 ii libprocesscore9 4:5.27.8-1 ii libqt5core5a 5.15.10+dfsg-3 ii libstdc++6 13.2.0-4 libkf5sysguard-bin recommends no packages. libkf5sysguard-bin suggests no packages. -- no debconf information
Bug#1030304: Licensing & copyright issues
> Public Domain is an accepted as DFSG compatible. As the DFSG-FAQ §15 > says: "Software placed in the public domain has all the freedoms > required by the DFSG, and is free software." Yes, Public Domain is indeed "free software" and you can incorporate it in a larger project (either proprietary or FOSS). But what you can not do is to claim copyright over that code or re-license it. By slapping a copyright notice on a file, you are basically claiming "I wrote this". Give the original authors due credit and mark the files as Public Domain source.
Bug#1030304: Licensing & copyright issues
Source: linuxcnc Severity: serious Source files for libnml lack standard Debian or SPDX copyright headers. Also obsolete version of LGPL used. Source files for both the core linuxcnc & libmnl are forked and munged from a NIST project known as the Enhanced Machine Control (EMC). The source code for this is public domain. One can NOT take PD code, claim copyright, and then slap an arbitrary license on it. At best, renders the license unenforceable in many jurisdictions, or illegal in some. Kindly refer to Debian Legal

But both files existed previously, and separately, as far as I can tell looking back in both archives. Regardless of who wrote the original code, you can not take a file, hack it a little and then claim sole copyright yourself. It brings the Debian project in to disrepute if they host the package.

I'm trying it before doing it virtually instead of my real physical PC to learn and practice (don't want to hose my 12 yrs. old real hardware production PC!). I picked most of Debian's defaults (no GUI packages to install for now). I'm currently having problems with its GRUB bootloader part. I told it no to its "Install the GRUB boot loader to your primary drive." (https://i.ibb.co/1b2TYbr/primary.gif) and picked /dev/sdb (new virtual SSD) as shown in https://i.ibb.co/pRKBjBZ/2SDs.gif. I do NOT want to use its GRUB for dual booting. I'll manually boot the specific drive to boot its specific OS from BIOS' boot menu. Anyways, it completed. I told BIOS to boot the new SSD with Debian, but it got stuck with a blank black screen with its blinking _ cursor: https://i.ibb.co/v4xWdMP/rebooted-Stuck.gif. My 64-bit W7's drive still boots though. I tried again with Buster v10.10, but got the same exact results. If I tell Debian installer to install its GRUB bootloader into the primary and /dev/sdb, then it will work but I get W7 in GRUB's boot loader which I don't want. https://groups.google.com/g/alt.os.linux.debian/c/Ww_-hii7o_Y/m/MUUni-hxAgAJ says Jack was able to reproduce it as well with his Debian installation, but not with Mint. There seems to be a bug in Debian's installers? :( Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

Package: installation-reports Followup-For: Bug #855075 Dear Maintainer, (no need to cc me on followups tks) tags moreinfo thanks hello, i ran into a similar problem, but not with DVDs, instead it was that i had two USB sticks which happened to have iso images on them and during the install d-i changed to considering the second device the one it was loading things from. i was able to open a shell and get it corrected, but for someone else who may not know how to do this it could be a surprise. the fun started when d-i wrote the new partition table information and then then was trying to load things from it... :) of course, wiping the second device would have made the problem not happen. ant -- Package-specific info: Boot method: USB Stick Image version: d-i netinst RC2 i386 Date: Machine: old PC the two USB sticks show up as /dev/sdf and /dev/sdg. Bug#808870: debian-installer: Debian v8.0.2's installers does not tell users that there is insufficient disk space...
Package: debian-installer ... after selecting packages (e.g., desktop manager). For an example, I was using debian-8.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso to install into a VirtualBox v5.0.12...'s virtual machine (VM) with 8 GB of disk space (using its default /var, swap, and /home setup). The installers (text and GUI) failed quickly after selecting packages to install. I recently mentioned this issue in my http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17=126247=602529 forum thread when I had problems installing, but people said that users should know this in advance. To me, this is a bad user experience (UX) and not friendly to newbies to use Debian. :( Thank you in advance. :) Best regards, Ant

(does reenable IPv6 help?) it did, that is how i got it to finish the install. thanks. Bug#769121: wiki.debian.org: man pages, info pages, /usr/share/doc, etc
Package: wiki.debian.org Severity: wishlist Dear Maintainer, recently on the mentors list there is discussion about how to get more people to help out. i don't want a badge, i just want an easier way to do it. one easy way, is to make all documentation automatic generated to wiki and to then let people with wiki accounts to propose edits and improvements, steer new contributors to the wiki and to help out with docs, which i think many would agree can often use more love. the bar for getting a wiki account can be lower than New Maintainer and DD... seems a better workflow too if we can have developers picking up man pages from a central source instead of having to deal with a bug for each page update/close/upload etc. the leverage that this can get with linking to other projects manual pages or documentation would be greatly increased too. ok, that is my wishlist, as i sit thinking about a manpage update i would suggest for several tools, but i can't do it because this e-mail address isn't set up yet the way i'd like (chicken and egg problem)... -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.17-1-686-pae (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: mate-keyring Version: 1.6.0-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer(s), thank you much for Mate! i'm very glad to have a functional desktop again that works how i'd like. my bug was with the transition... following the mate transition (using the original unofficial archive and switching to using the Debian packages as they arrived) eventually mate- keyring is left as an obsolete package. removing it makes several other programs unable to function (evolution being one of them i use the most) without suggesting the replacement by gnome-keyring. by looking through the wiki at: http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/roadmap i saw where gnome-keyring was the replacement, so i was able to install that and that did correct the problem. thanks for all your work. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.14-1-686-pae (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages mate-keyring depends on: ii dbus-x11 1.8.2-1 ii dconf-gsettings-backend [gsettings-backend] 0.20.0-2 ii libatk1.0-0 2.12.0-1 ii libc62.19-1 ii libcairo21.12.16-2 ii libdbus-1-3 1.8.2-1 ii libfontconfig1 2.11.0-5 ii libfreetype6 2.5.2-1 ii libgcrypt11 1.5.3-4 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.30.7-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.40.0-3 ii libgtk2.0-0 2.24.23-1 ii libpam-runtime 1.1.8-3 ii libpam0g 1.1.8-3 ii libpango1.0-01.36.3-1 pn libtasn1-3-bin none mate-keyring recommends no packages. mate-keyring suggests no packages. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#735142: debdelta timeouts on slow connection
Package: debdelta Version: 0.53 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, with latest debdelta (0.53 in experimental) and other versions in testing/unstable (all have been tried). while using a very slow connection the debdelta-upgrade will repeatedly time out, meaning the run will not finish loading the debdeltas without being restarted. i consider it a minor bug as it is easily fixed by the user, and only some few people are on such slow connections any longer. this is a note for those who might experience similar timeouts. by adjusting the timeout value from 15 seconds to some larger value will help people with slow connections to get the debdeltas downloaded in fewer tries. there is only one use of the word timeout in /usr/bin/debdelta so that is easy to find and adjust. so far 600 seconds seems to work for me, but others may wish to use some other number. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.12-1-686-pae (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages debdelta depends on: ii binutils2.24-2 ii bzip2 1.0.6-5 ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.6-5 ii libc6 2.17-97 ii python 2.7.5-5 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.8.dfsg-1 Versions of packages debdelta recommends: ii bsdiff 4.3-15 ii gnupg-agent 2.0.22-3 ii gnupg2 2.0.22-3 ii lzma 9.22-2 ii python-apt 0.9.1 ii xdelta 1.1.3-9 ii xdelta3 3.0.7-dfsg-2 ii xz-utils [lzma] 5.1.1alpha+20120614-2 Versions of packages debdelta suggests: ii debdelta-doc 0.50+2: -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#707672: general: binary diffs of large packages
Package: general Severity: wishlist Dear Debian, At the end of a slow line it would still be nice to be able to download only the actual binary differences between versions of a package during an upgrade. Especially for larger packages. I'm sure it is possible to do technically, but it may require a very different approach to packaging. For the longer view, yes, the internet is getting faster, but it isn't always fast for everyone and it is nice to think of it as a limited resource. If Debian can make this change then that is many many bytes no longer needing to be shipped, saving energy and connection times for everyone, disk space, etc. Thanks for consideration, -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-686-pae (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: astyle Version: 2.01-1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? Edit small c code file called alpha.c main () { printf (hello\n); } Save file. ls --full-time alpha.c astyle --preserve-date alpha.c ls --full-time alpha.c file date/time is modified by ten seconds. Examining the code for astyle there is a spot where they added ten seconds to suit make and some other program so they will see the changed files even if specified to not change the date/time. Seems like this should be a different option, but really, they should be using touch if they want a modified date/time on the file and leave this option to work correctly. * What outcome did you expect instead? Bug#613605: patch -b and -V options, overwrites file.orig despite manpage description
Package: patch Version: 2.6-3 Severity: normal hello, the following description in the manpage says (below), but when using patch -b and not specifying -V, it clobbers the .orig file instead of using the numbered or t method as explained as the default. from the description i was expecting a file name like X.c.orig.0 to be created if X.c.orig already existed. i'm not sure what the actual intended default is, but i'm pretty sure some people don't want their .orig files overwritten. the added text to the simple method that reflects current behavior would be something like: simple overwrites the file.orig if it already exists. thanks for your attention, having much fun, enjoying wheezy/testing :) == -V method or --version-control=method existing or nil Make numbered backups of files that already have them, otherwise simple backups. Bug#611597: lists.debian.org: spam cleaning from the outside and tagging
Package: lists.debian.org Severity: wishlist the following is my report of various ideas after spending a few hours tagging spam in a few lists. i will probably do more eventually as i'm quite sure i'll have extra time here or there where i just want to fight entropy and zap some spam. helping out one way i can from the outside (not as a DD or DM). i could do a lot better tagging for those following up later if i had more options (other than just reporting a message as spam). if a message already has plenty of marks, show it as already marked. let me spend my clicks some where else. tell me which lists you need reviews for. i'll be glad to wade through them. English only please. put a status list someplace for us and we'll use it. :). it would also be nice if the view changed back to my preferred view (month at a time sorted by thread and date) instead of taking me someplace else where i have to click back twice to get to where i was. still i was able to review the entire ctte list in about an hour. so not too bad. :) it was fairly cleaned out for the later years. there were a few messages i would have marked, but i left them as they were inappropriate for the group, but not spam. i'm working my way through the legal group. not too bad there. just a few so far, i'm still in the early years... boot is in pretty good shape. just a few recent ones there. on reporting spam and tagging, if i could report it as inappropriate language (for english lists), wrong list, (for removing posts that really don't belong in the list and the followups that tell people where to go), off topic (for the group or thread). etc. these would all help greatly in making the archive more usable for people who come back later. of course the raw view would still be available for those who want the full list, but this way it saves a lot of back and forth interaction when i'm simply scanning the entire list looking for interesting topics and spam. the most general thing to allow me to do would be to create my own tag if one doesn't already exist. (unlikely i know, but at least that way you would know what various people out here are thinking when you are working on the archive. also much administration trivia of a list could be tagged so it could be then filtered out by people who just want the core information (BTS messages, group organization banter, please subscribe/unsubscribe me, please remove my messages, etc.). review of clicked items per session so that i could reconsider or if i know i've misclicked. ok, for now, i think that is my input, after several hours of clicking, it's time to take a break. good evening and on the brink of squeeze let me say that you folks are doing very well considering the massive complexity of what you are doing. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
