Bug#332874: udev conflicts with hotplug package

2005-10-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Installing udev caused the hotplug package to be removed. This is still
needed to support the usb keyboard/mouse.

Not just that. A simple laptop correctly working will stop loading X
since the touchpad can't be found anymore.

No, it's not.

Which modules does your touchpad need? Why are they not being loaded by
udev? Which kernel are you using?

Which modules does your touchpad need?

It's a Synaptics Touchpad so I think it doesn't need any special
modules.

Why are they not being loaded by udev?

udev isn't creating the device nodes at:
/dev/input/

 Which kernel are you using?

Debian's linux-image-2.6.12-1-686_2.6.12-10

Non-special modules, whatever this means, are relevant too.

This is not relevant unless you can first show that the needed kernel
modules have been loaded.

I wonder if serio hotplugging is not working... If you cannot try with a
2.6.13 kernel it would be very useful if you could get a boot time
events log. Add this to /etc/default/hotplug:

EVENTS_LOG='/dev/hotplug.log'

And uncomment the logger.agent line in
/etc/udev/rules.d/z55_hotplug.rules .

Right now I'm working with this laptop and can't start experimenting
brokenness again.

I'm almost sure this problem will arise to anyone using
a laptop with an integrated Synaptics Touchpad.

linux-2.6.13 is not in Debian and I'm not going to compile it now.
(The last time I tried 2.6.13 it broke for
different reasons so I'm sticking
with stock Debian linux kernel)

I'll try to do some testing on Tuesday if possible.

In the meantime if you don't find a solution maybe you should revert the
change of conflicting with hotplug and upload to experimental instead.

Hotplug is also necessary for loading external firmware and can not be replaced
by udev.
