Bug#345436: xlibs: Keyboard not working properly after upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Hi, I also have a problem with the keyboard in X, namely I cannot produce accented characters like à with dead keys. It happens with both the keyboard and the kbd driver. I found the cause to be rooted in the following message in X log: expected keysym, got dead_diaresis: line 143 of pc/de The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports: Warning: Type ONE_LEVEL has 1 levels, but RALT has 2 symbols Ignoring extra symbols Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server I could fix both the error message and the problems with dead keys by editing /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/level3 and changing key RALT { type[Group1]=ONE_LEVEL, to key RALT { type[Group1]=TWO_LEVEL, I think the problem already appeared in some version of xorg 6.8.2, but I don't know the exact time, as I don't use accented characters all that often. Thanks, Carsten

i have exactly the same problem (among which maj, alt and alt-gr keys not working, as you can see) after upgrading, and a few hours of testing to solve it changed nothing. it got even worse when after changing xorg.conf, gnome would freeze while loading, and since ctrl+alt+f1 wasn't working any more, i had to boot on a knoppix to access my computer in command line. other symptoms include del keys not working under gnome i joined my xorg.conf and xorg.log. i was so happy to swith to xorg 6.9, but unfortunately this issue is preventing me from programing, so i'll be happy to find a way to fix it ;) françois leiber # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Wed Dec 14 16:39:22 PST 2005 # XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page. # (Type man XF86Config-4 at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86 # package. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following commands as root: # # cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom # md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 Section ServerLayout Identifier Default Layout Screen Default Screen 0 0 InputDeviceGeneric Keyboard InputDeviceConfigured Mouse CorePointer InputDeviceGeneric Mouse EndSection Section Files # local font server # if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these FontPathunix/:7100 FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc #FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID #FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi EndSection Section Module # LoadGLcore Load bitmap Load dbe Load ddc # Loaddri Load extmod Load freetype Load glx Load int10 Load record Load speedo Load type1 Load vbe EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Keyboard Driver kbd Option CoreKeyboard Option XkbRules xorg Option XkbModel pc105 Option XkbLayout fr EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Configured Mouse Driver mouse Option Device /dev/psaux Option Protocol ImPS/2 Option ZAxisMapping 4 5 EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Mouse Driver mouse Option SendCoreEvents true Option Device /dev/input/mice Option Protocol ImPS/2 Option ZAxisMapping 4 5 EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Generic Monitor HorizSync 31.0 - 69.0 VertRefresh 59.0 - 86.0 Option DPMS EndSection Section Device Identifier NVIDIA Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4200] Driver nvidia EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Device NVIDIA Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4200] MonitorGeneric Monitor DefaultDepth24 Option RenderAccel true #Option AllowGLXWithComposite true Option CursorShadow true Option CursorShadowAlpha 40 SubSection Display Depth 1 Modes 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 4 Modes 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 8 Modes 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 15 Modes 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 16 Modes 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 24 Modes 1280x1024 1024x768 800x600 EndSubSection EndSection X Window System Version 6.9.0 (Debian 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 20051229045140 David Nusinow [EMAIL PROTECTED]) Release Date: 21 December 2005 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.9 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.14-2-686 i686 [ELF] Current Operating System: Linux poto 2.6.15-1-k7 #1 Tue Jan 3 10:46:46 UTC 2006 i686 Build
Bug#345436: xlibs: Keyboard not working properly after upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Package: xlibs Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable After the upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1, the keyboard stopped working properly under X. I've noticed the following: 1. ctrl-alt-fn doesn't switch to other virtual consoles 2. The key with characters '/' and '?' is dead Not switching to virtual consoles can be lived with, but the lack of '/' and '?' makes X unusable. Needless to say, the keyboard works properly on the consoles, and it worked properly before the upgrade. Uhhm, you're right. What I'd done was: sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude upgrade and left it installing, unattended. After hitting the problem, I downgraded everything and, after your email, upgraded again. There was an error unpacking xlibs-data, but I couldn't capture it: something to do with not being able to unpack a file because it also belonged to package xlibs. Here's the weird thing: grep xlibs-data /var/log/aptitude | tail -1 [UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 - 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 dpkg -l xlibs-data ii xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System client data I guess the bug stands then.
