Bug#385990: (forw) Bug#385990: [Debian-in-workers] Bug#385990: ttf-malayalam-fonts: Add another font to the package

2006-12-18 Thread പ്രവീണ്‍‌|Praveen

Hi,

2006/12/18, Christian Perrier [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

(trying to solve an issue in Debian with fonts for the Malayalam
language, one of the official languages in India. This language uses
its own script. Debian Installer is now translated in Malayalam but we
have problems to display Malayalam in D-I due to #403404)

There is an updated version of Rachana (it is available with Soumyadeep)
which does not have these issues.

I could include it in a next NMU of ttf-indic-fonts, aimed at fixing

#403404, caused by errors in the Rachana font.

Please use the new version of Rachana font (Rachana_w01.ttf)

My conclusion currently, about Malayalam fonts is:

-The Rachana font (Racotf04) could have potential licensing
issues. See http://bugs.debia.org/385990 for background

Use Rachana_w01.

Regards
Praveen

As far as I remember, I received a mail from the original
developers of RacOtf who claim it is GPL-ed. I'll hunt up the mail
and forward it. I plan to include it in the next big upgrade of
ttf-indic-fonts (I'm sorry I can't do it right now, since my home
DSL is down). If Christian does decide to do an NMU to include
Anjali Old Lipi, that'll be great :)

You mean they confirmed that the font is GPL'ed? and modification is
actually allowed?

And IIRC, Rachana fonts form chillus without the zwj character, which
does not conform to the Unicode standards. Praveen, has this problem
been fixed?

As you know Etch is in deep freeze and the longer you wait, the greater
the chance you will miss the release. Is your work in SVN? Id so maybe I
can finish off what needs to be done and do an NMU for you.

About the NMU's, I already did some, no problem.

The only problem to raise is th elicense issues for the various
proposed fonts.

The new Rachana Open Type font (Rachana_w01.otf) seems to work well
with G-I. However, its license wasnot clear. The font itself has no
embedded info about the font being GPL and whichever other license.

However, I finally found the answer:

http://plus.sarovar.org/contents/fonts/Rachana_w01-LICENSE.txt

So, I will go for it and:

Include the new Rachana_w01.otf in ttf-malayalam-fonts in place of the
older oneand use it in the udeb.

I work on it right now.

PS: all this work should go in the SVN of pkg-fonts, the Debian Fonts
Task Force SVN, probably...

Anjali Old Lipi font is a good replacement for RacOtf.ttf. Last time I
heard of it, somebody representing the upstream had asked the creator
of Anjali Old Lipi font to desist from fixing some encoding bugs in
RacOtf.ttf. The result of this demand was creation of the Anjali Old
 Lipi font.

Whether you remove RacOtf or not, Anjali is a good font,
 typographically.

 The font is available from
http://indulekha.com/AnjaliOldLipi-0.730.ttf (Note:- that is NOT the
 upstream site).

I could include it in a next NMU of ttf-indic-fonts, aimed at fixing

My conclusion currently, about Malayalam fonts is:

-The Rachana font (Racotf04) could have potential licensing
 issues. See http://bugs.debia.org/385990 for background
-It definitely has technical issues
-Anjali Old Lipi is a suitable replacement font according to Malayalam
 speakers

However, the licensing of that font is pretty scarce. All what we have
is:

Credit to Kevin Siji, 2004. No rights reserved.

Upstream for this font seems to be http://varamozhi.sourceforge.net
where the license is said to be GPL.

debian-legal people, do you have any advice about this being enough to
be considered free ?

People from the varamomzhi project on SourceForge, could you clarify
the license for the Anjali Old Lipi font ?

Many thanks in advance for all your answers.

Sorry for top posting, but I included a couple of people who I feel should
be kept in the loop.
