NACK. My laptop still freezes when I switch the VT from console back
to X.

When I attached strace on the X process, everything went fine, but
without, I get the same hard freeze. I can't even seem to get X to
freeze with strace this time around.

The xorg.conf file is still the same as when I first reported this
bug. I don't think that the int10 issue matters... I didn't see
anything related to it in the current log dump (attached), either.

Looks like I'd need to grab the source and start adding some delay
loops at selected places to try to find where this happens. Sounds
daunting.

I know that I may well be the only one who encounters this bug. I
know that there was nothing wrong with VT switching during the XFree86
days. My laptop is old and nobody's likely to have another like it
anymore. For all I know my laptop might even be subtly broken. I'm
half expecting you to tell me to just live with this already.

I don't think that UseFBDev has ever mattered, other than via causing
an extra delay at some critical point during VT switching, which has
helped to avoid the crash. Attaching strace to X or even raising the
nice value and running a busy loop in other process seems to make the
freeze bug go away, too.

But even when there's no freeze, I still have at least 10 seconds'
delay before I get to use X after pressing alt-F11 (yes, I have 10
virtual consoles), so I guess the whole issue is rather moot unless
that gets cut down to some sane duration. I guess I would spend my
time better teaching some WM to give me as quick an access to an xterm
as the flick of ctrl-alt-F1 rather than hope that this all gets fixed.

Actually, UseFBDev has been removed in 6.8.0. So we are not dealing with
the same problem anymore. It is the same problem that you observed
earlier when you tried disabling UseFBDev.

Which xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-video-ati were you using at this point?

Upstream claims the bug is fixed.

I recently used my laptop again for some time and can report that same
VT freeze issues are still there.
