Bug#506552: fontconfig-config: Same or similar problem in icedove
The Wanderer wrote: Package: fontconfig-config Version: 2.6.0-3 Followup-For: Bug #506552 I am no longer nearly so certain that what I am seeing is the same bug. I have noticed that the same ugly-font problem is, in some cases, occurring in images as well as in normal text - images which I remember quite clearly being non-ugly before the change happened. Specifically, the text in the images down the right-hand side of the page at http://mother3.fobby.net/index.php show what looks like the same problem as I see elsewhere. Unfortunately, this makes it hard to show the difference to others, since any screen-captures I might make would probably look identical to the original images on any given machine. This means that what I am seeing is almost certainly not a font-related issue as such (and thus could not be bug in fontconfig-config), though it does so far manifest only in displayed text. I'm more or less stumped as to what it *could* be; the primary candidate would seem to be my video driver, but I haven't changed that since before the problem started (although I have recompiled it once in the interim, to get GL working again after an X-package update broke it - something which happens on a regular basis). Someone in #debian suggested that it might be bad xorg.conf settings or a failing monitor; that doesn't seem terribly likely to me, since A: I don't remember changing xorg.conf recently and B: the problem manifests only in certain programs, but I can't necessarily rule it out. I'm going to test with a different monitor later, but cannot do so for now. Assuming that the test with another monitor shows the same problem, any idea of what might have caused this, whether or not it might actually qualify as any kind of bug, and (if so) where might be appropriate to report that bug? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Andrew J. Buehler wrote: Package: fontconfig-config Version: 2.6.0-3 Followup-For: Bug #506552 I have just tested downgrading each obviously-could-be-related package (see list below) to the version in my package archive immediately preceding the one installed on the same day as the change, and the problem persists despite the downgrades (which are now reverted). Therefore, either I've missed a relevant package (possible), or I no longer have the correct working version in my archive (unlikely), or the problem is one of configuration which is only indirectly affected by the package contents - e.g. perhaps my local configuration was wiped out by the upgrade but naturally enough not restored by the downgrade. Testing was performed by shutting down and reopening Icedove, since it is much less of a hassle to restart than is Iceweasel, and shows the problem (in the form in which I see it) far more prominently. There is a faint chance that this is insufficient - that it would be necessary to restart X to see a change - but as that would be even more of a hassle than restarting Iceweasel, I have not tested it yet. The packages I tested downgrading are, in no particular order but with the tested all at once packages grouped together: package fromto xulrunner-1.9 1.9.0.4-2 1.9.0.3-1 fontconfig 2.6.0-3 2.6.0-1 fontconfig-config 2.6.0-3 2.6.0-1 libfontconfig1 2.6.0-3 2.6.0-1 libfontconfig1-dev 2.6.0-3 2.6.0-1 icedove 2.0.0.17-1 2.0.0.16-1 x-ttcidfont-conf31 30 ttf-liberation 1.04.92.dfsg-4 1.04~beta2-2 ttf-opensymbol 1%3a2.4.1-141%3a2.4.1-11 I also considered testing ttf-dejavu and libttf2, but the former has not been updated on my system since four months before the problem manifested (and seems to be up to date), and the latter has no older version on my system with which to test. Any suggestions for packages I could have missed testing, or other things I might want to try? -- This line is here because, while I don't want my usual .sig, it seems unnatural not to have one at all. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: fontconfig-config Version: 2.6.0-3 Followup-For: Bug #506552 I've just upgraded to 2.6.0-3 myself, and I'm seeing what I think is the same problem - but it's much more prominent in icedove than in iceweasel. I do not see the problem on the sites mentioned in the bug report, but I do see it in any plain-text file (displayed as fixed-width), and in any E-mail message displayed as plain text. Other unexpected font changes are visible on almost every page in Iceweasel, but not all of them are bad, and some might even be improvements. If I set font hinting to something below hintfull in fonts.conf (or the user-specific equivalent), the problem gets visibly worse, but of course there is no higher hinting level which might potentially fix the problem. I upgraded to latest sid this morning on all installed packages without outstanding bugs against them, and the problem first manifested after that. I have been in the habit of so upgrading at least once a week and occasionally more than once a day, but had not done so for a month or two because my root-partition HD was having problems and I didn't want to take risks. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.27-x86-32 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages fontconfig-config depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.24 Debian configuration management sy ii gsfonts-x11 0.21 Make Ghostscript fonts available t ii ttf-dejavu2.25-3 Metapackage to pull in ttf-dejavu- ii ttf-freefont 20080323-3 Freefont Serif, Sans and Mono True ii ucf 3.0011 Update Configuration File: preserv fontconfig-config recommends no packages. fontconfig-config suggests no packages. -- debconf information: * fontconfig/subpixel_rendering: Automatic * fontconfig/enable_bitmaps: false * fontconfig/hinting_type: Native -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
