Bug#525140: [brasero] Should recommend or depend on 'cdrdao'

2009-07-15 Thread Jason Heeris
Package: brasero
Version: 2.26.2-1

Just letting you know that this is still the case in 2.26. Without
'cdrdao' installed, I cannot burn a toc/bin audio CD image (created by
brasero) - the burn button is greyed out and there is a message about
not having the right plugins. With it installed, I can burn the image no
problem.

Cheers,
Jason

just a note:

The best audio quality is achived when using cdrecord (cdrtools).

The second best choice may be cdrdao but note that cdrdao is not maintained
anymore since 5 years. There have been a few bug fixes since then but no nore.

libburnia has other problems:

1) It is non-portable and thus limits portability of brasewro

2) It depends on a Linux privileges problem and will force
other platforms to run brasero as root if it may be ported.

cdrecord is the best way to deal with this as it implements a clean separation
between the privileged task of sending SCSI commands and a complex and thus
hard to review GUI code.

wodim is unmaintained, just represents an old (4+ years old) state of cdrtools
and wodim cannot be legally distributed because of Copyright and GPL problems.
wodim should have the lowest priority.

Jason, please ignore any communications from Jörg Schilling.

The problem with brasero is that it is somehow outdated. I recommend
using nautilus-cd-burner instead until we have packaged 2.26.

The drive is a Samsung SATA SH-S223F (the device manager says it's an

This may be a deficit of brasero or your brasero version.

It may make sense to talk to the brasero maintainers/authors directly.
Note that Solaris decided not to include cdrdao at all and that Solaris
tries to use brasero, so there is a need to implement decent brasero support
for cdrtools.

All CD writers are SCSI, they may just use a different SCSI transport media.
