Bug#537978: texlive-latex-base: update fails to build font

online and tried livetex-latex, and both failed in the package configuration

Does adding oldstable-proposed-updates to your sources list, updating
and re-installing solve your problem?

Thanks,

I do not believe this bug is the same as #534199, although boht

Hilmar So, why do you think not? You have the same error messages as
Hilmar in this bug report and you probably have the unfixed version
Hilmar on your hard disc.
Hilmar
Hilmar The bug is fixed in 2005.dfsg.2-13 of texlive-base-bin and
Hilmar 2005.dfsg.3-2 of texlive-latex-extra. You have
Hilmar texlive-latex-base 2005.dfsg.3-1, hence you should see the
Hilmar bug. Please show the output of: dpkg -l texlive*

Here is the output, which does indeed indicate the versions you mention:

rgristroph-austin:~#

The reason why I presume this is not the same as #534199, is that in
the /tmp/tetex.fmutil.* log file, the file doesn't stop at the file
older than 5 years message. The message is a warning, and the output
of pdfetex continues after it.

However, after digging through some directories in a debian mirror, I
got the texlive-base-bin_2005.dfsg.2-13_i386.deb file and I installed
it with dpkg -i (the output above is from before that). The install
worked, and latex seemed mostly working afterwards.

(I was trying to install texlive in the first place, because an
apt-get update had broken tetex, so that it had empty fonts or
something and produced mostly white pages when the dvi was translated
to pdf.)

Thanks for everyone's help.

I think this bug should be left open until the newer packages are
available through a normal apt-get.

--Rob

P.S. Why do you think Donald Knuth decided to warn himself against
processing files older than 5 years ? The old guy probably has many
of those, right ?

Weird indeed. IIRC the problem consisted of two parts:

1. fmtutil failed if the file older than 5 years messages appeared
2. The format mllatex needs the scrollmode to generate the format
   successfully (this is #534199).

As you had the version, which should have the fix for 1. you should
only run in 2. . I'd expect that the generation of mllatex.fmt fails,
but I can't find this message in your log.

However, after digging through some directories in a debian mirror,

This is a warning from LaTeX, which was never written/maintained by
DEK. I guess the LaTeX team would like to prevent people from using
old versions of LaTeX and running in old old (long fixed) bugs.

Greets,

-- Package-specific info:
If you report an error when running one of the TeX-related binaries
(latex, pdftex, metafont,...), or if the bug is related to bad or wrong
output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the
error in your report. Don't forget to also include minimal examples of
other files that are needed, e.g. bibtex databases. Often it also helps
to include the logfile. Please, never send included pictures!

If your example file isn't short or produces more than one page of
output (except when multiple pages are needed to show the problem),
you can probably minimize it further. Instructions on how to do that
can be found at

Both packages are unknown to me. As you didn't provide any log files
an can only guess, hat happpened here. Are you eventually looking at
#534199 and friends? The fix is in oldstable-proposed-updates,
however I don't see a chance to download the fixed packages from

Agreed, this is rubbish and useless bug report.

Rob, please READ what was written in your email, or provide a terminal
log of your problems, otherwise we need a crystal ball!

Best wishes
