My best guess would be that #688813 (grave) is addressed this new
upstream version. What is blocking the new release? As far as I can see
bitcoind will not be part of wheezy, so there is no point in waiting. On
the other hand just uploading the new release should fix a number of
issues.

I think part of the reason there isn't an updated release is that
Debian's Berkley DB library is newer than the stock one from upstream,
so wallet.dat made in debian are not compatible with upstream's
"stock" precompiled binary, and vice versa. This is dangerousness for
users that might expect to just be able to transfer their wallets
between machines easily. They are moving away from BDB and towards
leveldb, so this may fix itself soon.
