I'm also running 3.8.4-5+b1, now am seeing a disabled numlock again.
I don't have numlockx installed anymore, but the problem now seems to be
the combination of my keyboard (with hardware forcing numlock on) and
some other, more basic, package. This time around, I also don't have an
enabled numlock in another tty (Ctrl+Alt+F2 for example).

Perhaps this bug can be closed now. The problem I could solve by getting
rid of numlockx does not seem to be the same as the one I have now.
This one doesn't seem related to Gnome.

Steven

Hey Steven,

I am running gnome-shell-3.8.4-5+b1 here and I have numlockx installed but
I can't reproduce this issue.

Could you please still reproduce it with 3.8.4-5+b1 ?

cheers,

Bug#731350: gnome-shell: Numlock not properly working since 3.8

2013-12-04 Thread Steven Post
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.8.4-5
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I own a Logitech MX5500 keyboard and mouse combo, wich I use in combination
with the supplied bluethooth stick.
This keyboard doesn't have a numlock key but forces the numlock to be on in
hardware. This wasn't a problem pre-Gnome 3.8, but now the system says numlock
is on, yet when entering numbers on the keypad it uses the alternate functions
of the numeric keys (page up, page down, cursor keys, etc.). When doing so the
system briefly says 'numlock off' (I use the Lock Keys extension by
kazimieras.vaina in Gnome to display that). Since I don't have a numlock key,
on this keyboard, this gets very annoying (on my laptop I just press numlock to
get it to turn on)

   * What led up to the situation?
Upgrading Gnome from 3.4 to 3.8 in testing

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Playing around with numlockx.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
the 'numlockx on' command doesn't work as the system already reports that the
numlock is turned on.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
A working numeric keypad.

Best regards,
Steven
